> It sells a result people can see in their wallets: "copy someone else's hit, 100 variants from one command". It also names expensive AI ad SaaS products that cost hundreds of dollars a month and says it's free. # Hypit: a "copy the viral hit" pitch that earned 8000 stars in three days

**What it is** A video Skill you install into Claude Code / Codex. Drop in a viral video and the agent breaks it into a rebuildable project. Swap people, wording, product, or language, and batch out variants at about $1 each.

**Why it took off** It promises a result that speaks directly to wallets, "copy someone else's viral hit, get 100 variants from one command", and it names AI ad SaaS tools that charge over $100 a month while being free itself. A team with content-distribution roots posted in both English on LinkedIn and Chinese on V2EX on the same day, then multilingual creators spread it further with "comment to get the link".

**B** **How you could follow** Don't build another Hypit or a lighter version of it. Apply the same playbook to a different paying outcome (ad creative swaps, batch product videos, multilingual versions), or build a Douyin or Xiaohongshu version, add an editor and a lighter install, and write a README with a results-first tagline, meme demos, and per-video cost, launching in English and Chinese on the same day.

Grade B: the video-agent space is still hot, and reelmimic and openfilm, launched a month later, still gained over a thousand stars in a week. A follow-up that rewords the pitch and fills gaps can get stars. But "clone a viral hit" itself is already taken, and Hypit's launch relied on a whole team's distribution, which a solo developer can't easily replicate. Publicly known / widely discussed

On Sep 14, 2026, a guy named Alvin Chen posted on LinkedIn, opening with: "Paste a viral video into Claude Code and get back 100 TikTok variants." Over the next three days, their open-source repo hypit-ai/hypit gained two or three thousand stars a day and hit #1, #1, #3 on Trendshift's all-site daily chart. By Nov 6, the repo had 28,155 stars. The same idea had been open-sourced half a year earlier and only got a few dozen stars. What made the difference, and can you build a project that gets the same stars? This piece breaks it down.

### One LinkedIn post

The post was short, and read like growth-hacker ad copy:

> After creating more than 3,000 videos for American audiences, we learned something: Generating footage is easy. Recreating everything that makes a viral video work—the hook, pacing, captions, B-roll, and effects—is still painfully manual.

("After making 3000+ videos for US audiences, we found generating visuals is easy. The hard part is rebuilding what makes a viral video go viral: the hook, the pacing, the captions, B-roll, effects.")

Then came three lines of pricing: "Arcads $220/mo. Higgsfield $129/mo. Creatify $99/mo. Hypit is free and open source." The last line: "Comment Hypit and I'll send you the link, plus 100 free AI avatars." The company account reposted it, and friends kept reposting the next day. The same week, a team member posted a Chinese launch on V2EX, and the README also had a Simplified Chinese version.

Trendshift's daily numbers (UTC): 9-11 +30,9-14 +314, **9-15 +2,774,9-16 +3,123,9-17 +2,272** . 9-17 A crypto news account, Lookonchain, reposted it saying "about 8,300 stars".

### What it is

A Skill you install into Claude Code or Codex. One line, `npx skills add hypit-ai/hypit -g`, and then in chat you type:

> /hypit Clone this video: /path/to/video.mp4 …

The agent breaks the video into a rebuildable project: visuals, voiceover, captions, B-roll, effects, written in a markup language called SVML and compiled into the final cut. Change a line of dialogue, swap the presenter, swap the product, or translate to Spanish, and only the changed parts regenerate. Captions and effects align to words, not seconds (word-level alignment via WhisperX), so the timeline follows when you re-voice. You can swap the generation model, or skip models entirely and render only with code.

The three README examples are all memes: a 20-second football ranking that puts Ronaldo in tier D and Messi in tier S, with three variants (the presenter becomes a banana cat, the ranking is reversed, every player becomes a tech founder), total cost $1.15; a podcast clip of a muscular Barbie pressuring college students to take creatine, with variants where Pepe and Doge argue, the pitch becomes a retinol product, and then an app, $1.07; a street interview with a gangster's wife, with variants where Wojak and Chad appear, and the whole thing is translated into Spanish, $1.09.

### Why this one took off

The idea isn't new. In 2026 3, April already had viral-video-replicator and video-replication-sop, "viral clone" Skills with fifty to sixty stars each. Clipcat does TikTok product-video cloning, at 449 stars. Most of these only output storyboards and prompts, not finished videos. Hypit outputs finished videos, which makes it "worth clicking into," but its traction came from other things too.

**Sell the result, not the capability.** The hottest video agent repos of the period, HeyGen's hyperframes (79k stars), OpenMontage (77k stars) and remotion (71k stars), all pitch "agents can make video." Hypit's subtitle is "1 command, 100 variants, 100M views", which pitches "copy someone else's viral hit." The first moves developers. The second moves people who run paid ads, sell products through creators, or run accounts, and it spreads much further.

**Compare free against expensive.** It names three AI ad-video SaaS tools that charge $99–220 a month, positions itself as free, and labels every example with a cost of about a dollar. "Open-source alternative plus one dollar per video" needs no explanation, and people who share it will explain it themselves.

**The demos work for two audiences.** Ronaldo in tier D, Pepe and Doge: meme circles want to share it. "Your product, 50 openings": ad-buying circles want to share it. The README spells out one workflow: take a winning ad from the Meta Ad Library, swap in your product, and get 50 hook variants the same day.

**The team was already in distribution.** They describe themselves as having made UGC content for AI startups. The launch playbook was polished: a LinkedIn "comment a keyword to get the link + free resource pack", Chinese and English communities on the same week, a Trendshift daily-chart badge at the top of the README, a website logo wall reading "Trusted by teams from Google / OpenAI / Anthropic", a README line saying "Star to get updates first", and 27 releases between 9-14 and 10-09. This heat did not appear on its own.

### Where users come from

| When | Channel | What's visible |
|---|---|---|
| From ¥9-14 | LinkedIn | Founder's launch post + company account + friends reposting, "comment Hypit for the link" |
| From ¥9-14 | Chinese communities | V2EX launch post, plus a long post from a team member on "Harness for video" (9-22). Tutorials followed on Zhihu, CSDN, Tencent Cloud Developer Community, and Bilibili. |
| 9-15 to 9-17 | Ranking lists and aggregator accounts | Trendshift daily chart #1/#1/#3; a @github.signals TikTok video with 46k views; @GithubProjects posting on X |
| 9-12 to 9-25 | AI tool sites | Dozens of reviews and listings (how many the team arranged itself is unverified) |
| Continued afterwards | Multilingual creators | Spanish, Portuguese, Indonesian, Vietnamese and Traditional Chinese accounts on TikTok and Instagram, mostly with templated captions like "Comment VIDEO / HYPIT". One Spanish video got 17.5k views; one Traditional Chinese reupload from a Douyin account got 23k views. |
| 11-03, 11-04 | X list posts | "7 GitHub repos to keep you from being replaced by AI" |

Neither Hacker News nor Product Hunt featured it. We can't tell how much of the creator content was paid or arranged (the templates are so uniform that part of it likely was). It also never made GitHub's official trending page: repos under 60 days old rarely do, and this one was created on 7-29 and made public on 9-14.

### Where it stands now

From mid-October to early November it still gained 160 to 500 stars a day. Over the last 7 days it added 1,698, and over the first 7 days 1,868, so it is cooling gradually, not having a second wave. It has 3,262 forks, a ratio similar to new repos of the same size. Two things are unclear: GitHub's star-detail endpoint doesn't open for this repo, so accounts can't be spot-checked, and Trendshift shows 0 stars added on 9-25 for no known reason.

Followers have arrived, and some have gotten stars:

| Project | Repo created | star(11-06) | past 7 days | How they copied it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| openfilm/openfilm | 10-04 | 4,877 | +1,307 | "Turn any coding agent into a video agent", plus an editor that can change anything |
| edenfunf/reelmimic | 9-28 | 1,761 | +1,495 | "Give it a video you like, get back a new video in the same style", with a group of AI characters helping you plan, produce and review |
| liangdabiao/video-clone-lite | 9-21 | 204 | +14 | The description says outright "hypit makes you install 10G weird stuff, and the results are mediocre", and it ships a lightweight version |

Other projects include a hosted service titled "Hypit Alternative" to catch search traffic, landing pages on look-alike domains, a platform that wraps it as a paid hosted agent, and a Traditional Chinese TikTok account claiming someone on Xianyu is repackaging it for sale.

This table shows two things. First, **the heat around this category hasn't dissipated** : reelmimic, launched a month later, still gained 1,500 in a week. Second, **attacking it or making a lighter version doesn't get stars** . What gets stars is a reworded pitch ("same style", "any agent turns into a video agent") and something it lacks (an editor, a companion who helps you review).

### If it were you

**B.** Don't build a second Hypit. The "clone viral videos" pitch is already taken by it and a few followers. What's worth building is the same playbook applied to another "result that makes money" as an agent Skill, or filling a gap in the video space that Hypit left open. The opening exists, and so do the weak spots: Hypit's launch leaned on a team that knows distribution, and a solo dev doesn't have that crew.

**Who it suits** : developers already writing Skills for Claude Code / Codex, with one or two projects over 100 stars; people who can get a launch going in both the English and Chinese communities (V2EX, X, LinkedIn, or r/ClaudeAI); ideally someone who can edit video and make a good-looking demo.

**Who it doesn't suit** : people who only want a cleaner low-level library. Libraries that sell a capability take a long time to collect stars, while ones that sell a result spread fast. It also doesn't suit anyone planning a "lite Hypit": video-clone-lite has shown that path doesn't get stars.

**How to do it:**

- Change the result: find one that maps as directly onto a wallet as "clone a viral hit" does, e.g. "turn a winning Meta ad into 50 openings for your product", "one product link becomes 30 sales videos", or "one video, auto-dubbed into ten languages." Each of these can ship as its own Skill.

- Change the audience and platform: Hypit's examples are all TikTok and English memes. Recreating the structure of viral videos for Douyin, Xiaohongshu, or WeChat Channels, with Chinese examples and domestic models (Seedance, Kling) wired in by default, targets a different crowd.

- Fill the gaps: install light (no 10G dependencies), ship an editor you can drag to modify, and let people preview before rendering. openfilm got close to 5,000 stars on the strength of its editor alone.

- Copy Hypit's README structure: a one-line results-focused subtitle, three meme demos, each with its total cost, and name two or three expensive SaaS competitors.

**How to get users** : launch in English and Chinese on the same day; on LinkedIn / X, use "comment a keyword to get the link + a free resource pack"; first find TikTok accounts like @github.signals, the GitHub aggregators, and AI tool sites; add the Trendshift badge to the README, and for the first two weeks ship a release every two or three days.

**When to get in early** : the video agent space is still hot. reelmimic and openfilm each still gained over a thousand stars a week, so the best window is to ship before the end of 2026. Once Claude Code, Codex, or a major player like HeyGen releases its own "clone video" feature, the window shrinks.

**What would tell you you're wrong** : if the launch doesn't reach 1,000 stars in its first week, or if openfilm and reelmimic's weekly star gains drop to two or three hundred by late November, the video agent wave has passed, and changing the result won't rescue it.

## Why hypit-ai/hypit took off

> Channel: GitHub · Research day 2026-11-06 · Data sources: our github library (repo_day, from 2026-10-09), Trendshift daily star gains table, GitHub API, web / LinkedIn / TikTok (TikHub) search.

### One line

Hypit is a "video harness" for Claude Code / Codex: a Skill, plus a markup language called SVML, plus a compiler. Drop in a viral video and the agent breaks it into a rebuildable project (visuals, voiceover, word-aligned subtitles, B-roll, effects). Swap the person, the words, the product, or the language, and generate variants in batches, at roughly $1 in model fees per video. **It took off because three things lined up** : it arrived while the Claude Code Skill ecosystem was hot (September). It used growth-hacker language ("Clone any viral video / 1 command, 100 variants, 100M views") to package work that AI UGC ad SaaS products like Arcads and Higgsfield charge $99–220 a month for as "free and open source, run it with your own agent." Then a Chinese team that had made 3000 videos for US AI startups launched in English and Chinese at the same time, and took the Trendshift daily #1 spot from 9-15 to 9-17. After that, creator content on LinkedIn, Instagram, and TikTok ("comment VIDEO to get the link"), plus secondhand coverage by Chinese AI media, kept it gaining 200–400 stars a day.

### 1. Growth data

- **Built the database 2026-07-29, but went public with 2026-09-14** . Trendshift tracked 9-08 to 9-10 gaining 0 stars a day, 9-11 +30,9-14 +314, **9-15 +2,774, 9-16 +3,123 (peak), 9-17 +2,272** . Those three days ranked #1 / #1 / #3 on Trendshift's site-wide daily chart. 9-23 added another +1,544. Over 60 days: +28,257 stars, +3,580 forks, 94 merged PRs (read from trendshift.io/repositories/229030,2026-11-06).

- Our library: 10-09 is at 20,350 stars, and 11-06 is at 28,155 stars. From 10-09 to 11-06 it gained 163–498 stars a day. In the last 7 days it gained +1,698, and in the first 7 days +1,868 (repo_profile, 2026-11-06). It's a long tail that's cooling off, not a second wave. It never made GitHub trending, but at 11-06 it's only 100 days old, close to the "repos under about 60 days old don't chart" cutoff, and trending counts from creation date rather than public release, so this tells us little.

- Star-inflation check: none of the suspect flags in the library triggered. Fork-to-star ratio is 11.6%, close to the median of 11% for similarly aged new repos of similar size (≥5000 stars). Daily star gains line up with Trendshift and media coverage (9-17 Lookonchain and the "Beating AI" flash news said "about 8,300 stars"; 9-22 V2EX post said "13k+ in a week"). Anomalies: **the GitHub stargazers API returns 404 for this repo** (other repos work fine), so the star-level detail can't be spot-checked. 9-25 gaining 0 stars in one day (per Trendshift) is also odd, and the cause is unclear.

- Frequent releases: between v0.1.8 (9-14) and v0.3.1 (10-09) there were 27 releases. Two core contributors (rponeawa with 866 commits, overlordkim with 568), about 1,500 commits in total.

### 2. Where users came from (growth tactics)

| Channel | Evidence | Confirmed |
|---|---|---|
| The founder and team launched on LinkedIn, with growth-hacker copy | 9-14 Alvin Chen posted: "Paste a viral video into Claude Code. Get 100 TikTok variations back… Arcads costs $220/month. Higgsfield $129. Creatify $99. Hypit is free and open source… Comment \"Hypit\" and I'll send you the link plus 100 free AI avatars"; company account reposted; friends 9-15 amplified (Vipin Jangir and others) | Yes |
| The "comment a keyword to get the link + 100 free AI avatars" tactic, trading engagement for reach | The README directly links to a Google Drive folder labeled "Get 100 FREE AI Avatars with unique voices". LinkedIn, Instagram ("Comment 'VIDEO' for all the resources") and TikTok (@eddie.chen010: "Comment 'HYPIT' and I'll send you the repo") all used this template. | Yes (which parts were official and which were creator-initiated is unverified) |
| Simultaneous launch in Chinese developer communities | The V2EX launch post t/1242258,9-22 and the follow-up long post t/1244037 (author Daniel6606 says he's a team member, pushing the "video harness" narrative). The README has a Simplified Chinese version, and there are tutorials on Zhihu, Tencent Cloud Developer Community, CSDN, Bilibili, and YouTube in Chinese. | Yes |
| Trendshift / GitHub rankings and aggregator accounts | From 9-15 to 9-17 it took Trendshift's daily #1, with the badge pinned to the top of the README. TikTok @github.signals posted a video with 9-15k views 46, and X @GithubProjects posted about it. | Yes |
| A flood of AI tool sites and SEO reviews | Between 9-12 and 9-25 it picked up dozens of reviews or listings on sites such as aisignal, hysenlabs, themenonlab, aiidelist, ailistscout, arsentev, ai-all, visionstory, ai-tldr, and opensourcealternatives. It was also submitted to awesome-generative-ai (issue #1386). | Yes (how many were seeded by the team is unverified) |
| Multilingual AI creators amplifying it | On TikTok: Spanish @antonspain.ia (17.5k views), Indonesian @sazporto / @fiqhrodedhen, Portuguese @madrugasabiaaa, Vietnamese @cunghocainha, Traditional Chinese @user1804761507782 (23k views, a "mainland Douyin reposting" account). On X, Chinese accounts @369Serena, @AI_DVD6, @zupvx, and @changliuandlina (who used it to sell on TikTok). | Yes |
| List posts like "7 GitHub repos that keep you from being replaced by AI" | 11-03 and 11-04: on X, @thegreatest_sv and @vglonix's list posts included it (per Trendshift Mentions). | Yes |
| Crypto-circle flash news | Lookonchain 9-17 reposted the "Beating AI" news flash; the X post from @BNBBuilder_dev has crypto-world vibes | Yes (no sign of a token launch) |
| Paid ads | Not found; the ad libraries only track products on our list, so no match doesn't mean no ads | No |
| HN / Product Hunt | Our hackernews and producthunt databases don't have it | No |

### 3. Why it took off

1. **It rides the Claude Code Skill wave, and it started as a hit** . Install is one line: `npx skills add hypit-ai/hypit -g`, entry point is `/hypit Clone this video…`. The hottest video-agent repos of the same period (heygen-com/hyperframes 79k stars, calesthio/OpenMontage 77k stars, remotion 71k stars) all sell "an agent can make video". Hypit sells "an agent can copy someone else's hit". The second pitch speaks directly to creators, paid acquisition and sellers, and it's easier to pass along than "write code to render video".

2. **It benchmarks free against expensive SaaS** . The launch post and the comparison table on the site name Arcads (about $110–220/mo), Higgsfield ($19–129/mo) and Creatify ($99/mo) directly. Every case in the README lists its total cost (1.07–1.15 USD). "Open-source alternative + a dollar per video" is the easiest story to share.

3. **The demos work for both memes and paid ads** . A football ranking (C Ronaldo gets a D tier), a muscle Barbie pushing creatine on college students, and a gangster's wife doing street interviews. Each comes with three variants (swap in Pepe and Doge, Wojak and Chad, the banana cat, or translate into Spanish). Meme circles and paid-acquisition circles both get it and want to share it.

4. **The team was already in content distribution** . The founder says the team has "made 3000+ videos for US audiences", a V2EX post says they "make content for AI startups", and they referenced Perplexity's Meta ads and The Rundown's UGC. The launch rhythm (swapping in links through LinkedIn comments, giving away avatar and profile kits, dual Chinese and English launches, a site wall of big-name logos with "Trusted by teams from Google/OpenAI/Anthropic…") is a well-worn growth playbook, not something that happened by accident.

5. **There is a real engineering point** : subtitles and effects are anchored to words, not seconds (WhisperX word-level alignment), so re-dubbing doesn't require re-timing. Components are swappable, and the generation model is optional (you can make videos at zero model cost). That's the technical argument behind its claim of being "better than VLM script breakdown", and developer circles (V2EX, Zhihu source-code write-ups) accept it.

### 4. Competitors and differentiation

| Competitors | Where | Launched | Scale | How it differs from Hypit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Arcads | Web SaaS | Around 2023 | Leading AI UGC ad tools (revenue unverified) | Closed source, remixed inside the platform, subscription around $110+/mo; Hypit is open source and runs in your own agent |
| Higgsfield | Web SaaS | 2023–24 | Large AI video platforms (scale unverified) | Ad templates up to 15 seconds, credit-based pricing; Hypit is a full engineering project whose source you can modify |
| Creatify | Web SaaS | 2023 | AI ad videos (unverified) | Monthly subscription; Hypit is free, bring your own key |
| Seedance / GPT Image and other generation models | Big-company features / APIs | 2025–26 | — | Only output clips; Hypit treats them as swappable asset components |
| harry0703/MoneyPrinterTurbo | Open source | 2024-03 | 140K stars | One-click short videos from a topic, without cloning a reference video's structure |
| calesthio/OpenMontage | Open source | 2026-03 | 77k stars, 7 days +4,087 | General-purpose agent video production system, many pipelines, broad scope; Hypit focuses on "clone one hit, then batch variants" |
| heygen-com/hyperframes | Open source (big vendor) | 2026-03 | 79K stars | The rendering layer under "write HTML to render video", not responsible for cloning |
| remotion | Open source | 2020 | 71K stars | A framework for writing video in React; Hypit uses SVML with concurrent Chromium rendering |
| Vincentwei1021/video-shotcraft | Open-source Skill | 2026-07 | 17.2K stars | Remotion's product promo shot library, mostly original work, no cloning |
| Pixelle-Video | Open source | 2025-11 | 29.8K stars | A fully automatic Chinese short-video engine, no cloning |
| Clipcat-ai/clipcat-skill | Open-source Skill + SaaS | 2026-03 | 449 stars | Focused on replicating TikTok sales videos, the closest to Hypit, but it never gained traction |
| dingtom336-gif/viral-video-replicator, CY-CHENYUE/video-replication-sop-cy | Open-source Skill | 2026-03/04 | 54 / 60 stars | **Someone built a "viral video replication Skill" about half a year before Hypit** , but it only outputs prompts / storyboards, not finished videos |

**Differentiation** : others either "break down scripts into prompts" or "generate from scratch". Hypit outputs an editable, re-runnable engineering source (SVML): subtitles and effects are anchored to words, models are pluggable, and batch variants only regenerate the parts that change. Developers recognize this, but **it is not the main reason it took off** . The same idea (a viral-replication Skill) already existed, with at most a few dozen stars. Hypit reached 28k stars because of its positioning slogan, its price narrative against SaaS, meme demos, and a mature launch and creator distribution. Differentiation is why it holds up when people click in; distribution is why people see it at all.

### 5. Exposure level and copycats

- **Exposure** : heavily discussed. There are reviews and tutorials in English, Chinese, Spanish, Portuguese, Indonesian and Vietnamese, it hit #1 on Trendshift's daily chart, and it made a "7 GitHub repos you must learn" list. The open source is free, so there's no public revenue; monetization runs through HypiHub's hosted model service (a visionstory review writes "$15 buys 2,000 credits"), 5 model API partners (TokenDance, HiAPI, Pollo, BeatAPI, Monid, likely with revenue share, unverified), and commercial licensing (Apache-2.0 plus extra conditions: internal commercial use is fine, but using it in a multi-tenant SaaS requires a separate license). The same organization also runs hypitoken (a multi-tenant LLM gateway, recharged via Alipay), which suggests the team also has a domestic monetization line.

- **Copycats have already appeared** : liangdabiao/video-clone-lite (created 9-21, its description openly mocks "hypit makes you install 10G… I'll build my own", 204 stars); edenfunf/reelmimic (created 9-28, 7 days + 1,495,1,761 stars); openfilm/openfilm (created 10-04, 4,877 stars, "turns any coding agent into a video agent"); Riffkit wrote an SEO article "Hypit Alternative: a hosted way" to catch traffic; hypit.io uses a near-identical domain for an early-access landing page; Capafy wraps Hypit as a hosted agent and charges for it; a Traditional Chinese TikTok account calls it "the video-replication tool that sells hundreds on Xianyu", meaning someone is already repackaging and selling it there.

### 6. Takeaways

- **In the agent Skill ecosystem, pick a result with money attached and sell that** ("copy a hit", "100 variants", "100M views") instead of selling a capability ("agents can make video"). Among technical repos of this kind, the ones that sell results clearly spread better.

- **Name the expensive SaaS you're replacing and publish the per-video cost of each demo** , and the open-source-alternative story will spread on its own.

- **The launch playbook can be copied** : on LinkedIn / Instagram, post "comment a keyword to get the link + free kit"; launch in both Chinese and English communities on the same day; put the Trendshift badge and a logo wall in the README, and write "Star us to get release notifications"; ship a dozen versions within a week so the project looks very active.

- **Monetization** : the core is free; hosted model credits (HypiHub) plus API partners plus SaaS commercial licensing.

### 7. Still unclear

- The star breakdown API 404 can't be used to spot-check account quality; what caused 9-25 to gain 0 stars?

- How much of the creator content is paid or arranged by the team ("Comment VIDEO / HYPIT" uses a uniform template).

- Real usage: installing needs about 10G of dependencies (per the copycats), a high bar. HypiHub revenue and partner revenue share are not public.

- Team background: Alvin Chen, Daniel6606 of V2EX, the relationship between the two main committers, and where the company is registered are all unverified.
