# SculptForge: one person and Claude built a "free ZBrush" in 16 days. One YouTube video brought in a few hundred stars.

**What it is** A free, open-source desktop 3D sculpting app that runs on Linux and copies ZBrush's feel, with free AI model generation and brushes built in.

**Why it took off** ZBrush moved to a subscription and Mudbox was discontinued, building resentment. "One person plus AI clones ZBrush in two weeks" is a ready-made hook. A YouTube 3D channel running a "XX got cloned" series covered it, and once the video went up, stars jumped +246 in a single day.

**A** **How you could follow this** Skip sculpting. Pick a professional app that moved to a subscription, has no Linux version, or was recently discontinued, and hasn't been "cloned" yet. Copy its feel in an open-source alternative with enough depth, seed it on Reddit, awesome lists, and niche media, then reach out directly to channels that run this kind of series.

Grade A: a channel is actively looking for projects like this, and the same channel brought a few hundred stars both times. Most professional software categories are still unclaimed. The bet is whether the channel picks you and how quickly the audience gets tired of the format. Sculpting itself is already taken. Word traveling in niche circles

On 2026 Oct 31 at 8 o'clock in the evening, the 3D tutorial channel InspirationTuts posted a video titled simply "Zbrush is Getting Cloned", and the first line of its description was a GitHub link. The software being "cloned" is called SculptForge. Its repo was only 10 days old, and the author was an indie developer who had signed up for GitHub in September 2025, with just 20 followers. By Nov 6 the video had 174k views and 651 comments. The same afternoon, another channel, askNK, posted "An OpenSource Zbrush For All! – Maxon May Not Like This", which got 82k views. SculptForge's stars went from 11-01 at 94 to 11-02 at 340, and reached 606 by 11-06. How it got picked, and whether you can run this play again, is what this piece breaks down.

### What it is

A desktop digital sculpting app written in C++, GPL open source, with native builds for Windows, macOS, and Linux. The first line of the README reads "The free, open-source sculpting app", followed by a line-by-line rebuttal of ZBrush users' pain points: no cost, no subscription, native Linux, no account required, works offline, and you can modify the source.

The feature list is long: dynamic topology, voxel and quad-based retopology, texture painting, automatic LOD generation for games, one-click export to Unreal, two-way interop with Blender, OpenUSD, phone scanning (Gaussian splats), 52 ARKit expression blendshapes, and a built-in free AI: describe a brush in one sentence and it builds it; give it a sketch or a line of text and it generates a model you can keep sculpting, without your own API key. Digital Production 11-04, a German CG publication, joked that the list "looks like it was accidentally copied from a five-year roadmap".

Shortcuts and brush names are copied from ZBrush, and the official site has a getting-started guide titled "Coming from ZBrush".

The author's handle is islandmed. Over 16 days the repo saw about 1400 commits, all from him alone; 86 of his last 100 commits carried "Co-Authored-By: Claude". Between 11-04 and 11-06 he shipped 12 releases, and on 11-06 alone he shipped three (v0.11.6 through v0.11.8).

### Why this one took off

**The topic was picked for it by a YouTuber.** InspirationTuts has been running a series of "some pro software just got cloned" videos. On Nov 2 the same channel posted "Substance Painter is Getting Cloned too?", covering another open-source project, subcraft, which got 100k views. subcraft gained 207 stars in a single day on 11-04 (from 85 to 292) and now sits at 362. Two videos, one channel, one title formula, and each brought several hundred stars. So this wasn't SculptForge getting lucky: channels are actively hunting for projects like it.

**It hits three years of built-up resentment.** Maxon, the parent company of ZBrush, stops selling perpetual licenses in December 2023, leaving only subscriptions (about $40 a month). Autodesk's Mudbox is fully discontinued in November 7. The top-liked comments under the InspirationTuts video are "Own everything and be happy" (288 likes) and "Zbrush died long ago when they went subscription" (217 likes). A Digital Production article even framed the Mudbox discontinuation as the moment SculptForge showed up.

**"One person plus AI cloning ZBrush in two weeks" is the hook in itself.** The most-liked comment under the same video: "I love how fast AI went from 'it will end all our jobs' to 'it will end all the companies'", 698 likes. Viewers clicked in half for the sculpting software and half for the story.

**It looks legit.** The site has a demo video and benchmarks (the author's figure is 33 fps with 112M triangles on an RTX 3060), the feature set is big enough to fill ten minutes of video, and the version number keeps climbing. A comment on askNK's video reads: "this project is being updated weekly, several times a week!"

**That slot was empty.** For free sculpting there's Blender's sculpt mode and Nomad Sculpt on mobile. But open-source, standalone sculpting software designed around ZBrush habits: the previous generation, SculptGL (1.5k stars) and Dilay (505 stars), has already stopped updating.

### Where users come from

| Timeline | What happened | star |
|---|---|---|
| 10-21 | Repo created | — |
| Around 10-26 | The author posted as "I'm the developer" on r/SideProject, r/3Dmodeling, and r/software. | Up to around ninety stars |
| 10-29 | In one day, PRs went out to a string of awesome-lists: awesome-mac, awesome-gamedev, awesome-cg-vfx-pipeline, awesome-3d-printing; and listings on winget, AppImage, and Homebrew. | Same as above |
| 10-31 | InspirationTuts (174k views) and askNK (82k views) posted videos the same day. | 11-01 is 94 |
| 11-02 | As the video spread, VOIDART SCHOOL followed with "END OF ZBRUSH?!" (2.7k views). | 340(+246) |
| 11-04 | Digital Production published an article that states the developer pitched it themselves, and that "we haven't tested it". | 494 |
| 11-06 | Repost accounts on Instagram and Facebook picked it up. | 606 |

(The star counts are daily records; the 11-06 figure comes from GitHub.) No discussion of it turned up on X or Hacker News. The Reddit posts, the lists, and the pitches were the groundwork; the actual breakout came from those two videos. Whether the author reached out to the channels or they found him wasn't confirmed; since InspirationTuts has run this series for a while, finding it themselves is the more likely story (inference).

### What happened to the ones that followed

Only one direct competitor turned up: OxyBrush, an open-source sculpting app written in Rust, repo created Oct 31, reaching 15 stars by Nov 6. It came 10 days later with nearly the same positioning, but without a video push it never took off.

The more telling pattern is the template: subcraft and TextureCraft (both open-source clones of Substance Painter) were covered by the same batch of channels. "Open-source clone of an expensive 3D app" is becoming a series, but each slot currently has only one or two entrants.

The comments were blunt about SculptForge's weak spots: performance past tens of millions of polygons, and ZBrush's 2.5D engine and DynaMesh aren't there yet. "performance doesn't seem great" (31 likes), "looks like a 'generated' app… how much will they support". The stars came from the narrative; how many real users it keeps is still unknown.

### If it were you

**A.** It's a rare star play where outside channels distribute for you: a 3D channel was actively looking for open-source projects that "clone expensive pro software for free," and two of them brought several hundred stars each. The bet rests on two things: whether channels pick you, and when viewers tire of the title formula.

**Who it's for** : developers who can write desktop software (C++ or Rust both work), who are willing to spend ten-plus hours a day building with AI, who are long-time users of some pro software and know which feel users can't live without.

**Who it's not for** : anyone wanting to build yet another sculpting tool (OxyBrush shows the second entrant gets no story); anyone shipping a half-finished product and hoping a YouTuber will film it, since channels want a demo that fills ten minutes; anyone aiming to make money from this: SculptForge charges $5 and $300 a month for memberships, and its credits page still says "Be the first".

**How to do it** : pick a pro app that moved to subscription, dropped its Linux version, or just announced discontinuation, and that the 3D crowd hasn't "cloned" yet. Examples: Marvelous Designer (cloth), a specific piece of Houdini, Substance Designer, or retouching tools like Topaz. The same approach works in audio, CAD, and video color grading. Copy the shortcuts and workflow of the original, write a "coming from X" guide; put "free, no subscription, native Linux, no account" on the first screen of the README; keep the feature set broad enough to demo; put a demo video and benchmarks on the site.

**How to get users** : follow its order. First, post in relevant subreddits as a developer; within a day, finish the awesome-list and package-manager listings; pitch vertical media like Digital Production, CG Channel, and 80.lv. Then go straight to channels like InspirationTuts and askNK that run "XX got cloned" or "free alternative to XX" topics. Once the video is out, ship several versions a day so the comments see it moving.

**The deadline** : the window is the few weeks after the original announces discontinuation or a price hike. In any given slot, whoever gets filmed first holds it.

**Signs you misread it** : (1) You built an equally thick clone, pitched these channels, and a month later no video has passed ten thousand views. That means the channels' topic appetite is full. (2) The new videos in the "XX got cloned" series are dropping from 100k to ten or twenty thousand views. Viewers are tired of it. (3) The reverse: if a number-two entrant like OxyBrush gets several hundred stars by doing what SculptForge hasn't (say, performance at tens of millions of polygons), then more than one project can hold a slot.

## Why SculptForge (islandmed/SculptForge) took off

> In one line: an indie developer (handle Tony / islandmed) built an open-source C++ digital sculpting app with Claude, aiming at ZBrush. It's GPL, free, needs no login, runs natively on Linux, and has AI built in. It got about 600 stars in 16 days of being public. Nearly all of the stars came from two 3D YouTube channels posting "ZBrush got cloned" topic videos on 2026-10-31, together about 255K views.

### 1. Basic data

| Metric | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Repo created | 2026-10-21 | GitHub API |
| star / fork | 605 / 75 (2026-11-07 snapshot); the data card shows 577 / 73 (11-06) | GitHub repo_day library, GitHub API |
| Daily stars | 11-01 94 → 11-02 340(+246)→ 11-03 449(+109)→ 11-04 494 → 11-05 551 → 11-06 577 → 11-07 605 | github repo_day |
| Commits | About 1417 commits over 16 days, all from the author alone; 86 of the last 100 commits carry `Co-Authored-By: Claude` | GitHub API contributors / commits |
| Releases | From 11-04 to 11-06 it shipped 12 releases in three days (v0.10.11 → v0.11.8). The installers on the surviving releases total about 5,500 downloads; older release builds were deleted, so the real download count is higher | GitHub releases API |
| Author | The account was created 2025-09,20 followers ago. Apart from SculptForge, the other repos support it: a ComfyUI plugin, a brush library, a homebrew tap, and a batch of forks used to submit listings | GitHub API |
| Revenue | There's a $5/month membership and a $300/month studio tier, but the thanks page reads "Be the first", meaning there are no members yet | sculptforge.app/support.html, supporters.html |

### 2. Competitors

| Competitors | Form | Launched | Scale | How it differs from SculptForge |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ZBrush(Maxon) | Commercial desktop + iPad | 1999 | The industry standard. From 2023-12 it's subscription-only (about $40/month) | Paid, subscription-based, no Linux version. Its strengths are the 2.5D Pixol engine and performance at tens of millions of polygons. SculptForge copies its brush names, shortcuts and workflow, and its slogan is "the ZBrush you don't have to subscribe to" |
| Autodesk Mudbox | Commercial desktop | 2007 | 2026-08-07 stopped selling three-year subscriptions; 2026-11-07 was discontinued entirely | Being phased out. Digital Production's coverage frames its discontinuation as the moment SculptForge emerged |
| Blender Sculpt Mode | Open source | Already preinstalled | The biggest free option | Free sculpting users already had it. SculptForge's pitch is sculpting only, designed around ZBrush habits, plus a two-way Blender bridge. A YouTube commenter said it's "closer to blender than zbrush" |
| Nomad Sculpt | iOS / Android / desktop | 2020, then a desktop version came out | Mobile head sculpting, paid one-time purchase | Closed source, paid, and no Linux. A comment thread says pro users are moving from ZBrush to Nomad |
| 3DCoat, Substance 3D Modeler | Commercial desktop | Already around | Medium | Paid. Focused on voxels and VR, not quite the same path as SculptForge |
| ByHand(Truong CG Artist) | Free desktop (Godot, Windows) | 2026-07 | askNK video 17K views; both CG Channel and Digital Production covered it | Free but closed source, Windows only, fewer features. Digital Production lists it alongside SculptForge |
| SculptGL / Dilay | Open source | 2013 / 2015 | 1.5K / 505 stars, both no longer updated | An older generation of open-source sculpting, unmaintained and not aimed at the ZBrush workflow |
| OxyBrush | Open source (Rust) | 2026-10-31 | 15 star | Arrived 10 days after SculptForge, riding the same wave with nearly the same positioning |

Bottom line: free sculpting already had Blender and Nomad, and the "open-source standalone app aimed at ZBrush" slot was indeed empty, with the older projects all dead. SculptForge filled it, and the timing lined up with Mudbox's discontinuation and the resentment built up over ZBrush subscriptions.

### 3. Growth: where users came from

1. **The author posted on Reddit themselves** (confirmed): r/SideProject "I built a free, open-source ZBrush alternative. v0.2…", then "SculptForge 0.5…" on r/3Dmodeling and r/software, all as "I'm the developer", around 10-26. This phase only got it to about 90 stars (11-01 snapshot 94). The Reddit post bodies couldn't be retrieved, so upvote counts are unverified.

2. **10-29 listing submissions in one day** (confirmed): the same day it sent PRs to awesome-mac, open-source-mac-os-apps, awesome-gamedev, GameDev-Resources, awesome-cg-vfx-pipeline, awesome-3d-printing, AppImage and omarchy-pkgs, and submitted a winget package. There's also a SourceForge project page. This lays groundwork for SEO and long-tail traffic; it was not the source of the spike.

3. **Pitched to media directly** (confirmed): Digital Production's 11-04 coverage says "a developer sends over a project…" and notes "We haven't tested it", so it's clear the author pitched it.

4. **YouTube 3-day channel-growth videos — this is the real breakout** (confirmed):
    - InspirationTuts "Zbrush is Getting Cloned", published 10-31 20:00, 174K views, 651 comments, with a GitHub link in the description;
    - askNK "Sculptforge: An OpenSource Zbrush For All! – Maxon May Not Like This", published 10-31 15:00, 82K views;
    - VOIDART SCHOOL "END OF ZBRUSH?!", published 11-02, 2.7K views;
    - The timing matches: both videos went up on 10-31, and the next snapshot (11-02) showed +246 stars in a single day, then a daily decline.
    - The same pattern shows up on other projects too: InspirationTuts 11-02 posted "Substance Painter is Getting Cloned too?" (100k views), introducing Aalzard/subcraft. In the 11-04 snapshot, subcraft gained +207 stars in a single day (85 → 292). In other words, InspirationTuts' "XX Is Getting Cloned" series alone can reliably bring in several hundred stars.

5. **Instagram and Facebook repost accounts** (confirmed, but small): a "Github Signals" reel says "Follow for more open source project drops"; Facebook has reposts with titles like "END OF ZBRUSH?! Meet SCULPTFORGE".

6. **Nothing on X or HN** : x-radar found no SculptForge mentions within 30 days, and HN Algolia has no related posts.

No paid acquisition or fake traffic found. The sequence was: the author self-posted first to lay groundwork, then a big YouTube topic video triggered the spike.

### 4. Why it took off

- **It hits a clear nerve** : ZBrush 2023-12 dropped its perpetual license, and Mudbox 2026-11-07 was discontinued. The top-liked comments under the InspirationTuts video are "Zbrush died long ago when they went subscription" (217 likes) and "Own everything and be happy" (288 likes), and on askNK there's "bought Maya… bought zbrush, eventually again told I couldn't own it" (42 likes). The "free clone of expensive subscription software" angle in the video is itself a topic YouTubers want to cover.

- **The "AI will end companies" narrative** : the top-liked comment on InspirationTuts is "I love how fast AI went from 'it will end all our jobs' to 'it will end all the companies'" (698 likes). Viewers see "one person plus AI cloned ZBrush in two weeks", and that is the hook. Commit history backs this up: 1400 commits in 16 days, most co-written with Claude.

- **It looks like the real thing** : the site has demo videos and performance numbers, the README is long, and the feature list is dense: dyntopo, voxel remeshing, quad remeshing, Send to Unreal, a two-way Blender bridge, OpenUSD, Gaussian splat scanning, 52 ARKit expressions, an MCP server, and a free built-in AI (GPT-OSS 20B hosted by Pollinations). Digital Production described it as "feature list was accidentally copied from a five-year roadmap". A list like that gives YouTubers plenty to demonstrate.

- **No learning curve for ZBrush users** : it ships Classic shortcuts and a coming-from-zbrush guide, so existing users don't have to relearn their feel.

- **Fast iteration, always looks active** : several releases a day. A comment on askNK's video says "this project is being updated weekly, several times a week!" (20 likes).

### 5. Differentiation, and whether that's why it broke out

Differentiation has three layers: ① open source + free + no account + native Linux, while targeting the ZBrush workflow; ② a full pipeline feature set (Unreal, Blender, USD, VFX Reference Platform); ③ a built-in free AI and MCP. What actually made it take off is layer ①: the "free open-source ZBrush clone" label gave YouTubers a title to write. ② and ③ add the credibility and demo material, but they're not the main driver of spread.

Comments were blunt about the product's weak points: performance above tens of millions of polygons, the Pixol engine and DynaMesh are not there yet. One commenter said "performance doesn't seem great" (31 likes), another said "looks like a 'generated' app… how much will they support". The stars came mainly from the narrative and the topic choice, and there's no evidence yet that they'll turn into long-term users.

### 6. Visibility and copycats

- Visibility: it's circulating in small circles. 3D community YouTube totals about 255k views, and Digital Production covered it once. No coverage found on CG Channel, 80.lv, X or HN. No public revenue; membership is still 0.

- Copycats and the same template: OxyBrush (an open-source Rust sculpting app, 15 stars, created 10-31) is a direct counterpart. "Open-source clone of a pricey 3D app" has become a series: SubCraft and TextureCraft (a Substance Painter clone) were both covered by the same channels.

### 7. Takeaways

- Pick a pro app that's moved to subscription, has no Linux version, or has been discontinued, then use AI to quickly build a feature-dense open-source clone. Keep brush names, shortcuts, and workflows the same as the original to lower the switching cost.

- Post on Reddit, submit to awesome lists and winget/AUR/homebrew, and pitch vertical media at the same time. Then go after "X got cloned" video channels like InspirationTuts and askNK; one video can bring hundreds of stars.

- Monetize with free + early-access membership + custom studio builds (an open-core variant under GPL). No revenue verified yet.

### 8. Uncertain

- Exact upvote counts and post dates for the Reddit threads (scraping was blocked by 403).

- Whether the two YouTube videos were pitched by the author or found by the channels themselves. InspirationTuts has been running this series for a while, so finding it on their own is likely; askNK's description has an affiliate link, which doesn't look like a paid placement.

- How many stars turn into actual use. Download counts for deleted old releases can't be checked.

- The "vibecoded clone" claim on Facebook comes from a data card; the original post wasn't found this round.
