# One person plus AI, 30 days, 60 versions: how a Hongguo short-drama Mac client won nearly a thousand stars among a dozen rivals

**What it is** An open-source desktop client for Hongguo short dramas that runs on Mac, Windows, and Linux. It can search, play, download, merge, and follow series from three sources.

**Why it took off** Hongguo has no official Mac client, and a crowd of repos rushed into that gap. It earned a listing on Awesome Mac and reposts from Mac-scene KOLs by being genuinely open source with a signed, notarized Mac build. Then one person plus AI shipped 30 versions in 60 days and fixed a broken API within two days, which kept users around.

**C** **How you could follow it** Don't build another Hongguo desktop client; this category is already crowded. Look for another large content platform that exists only on mobile, and within two to three weeks of the first clone appearing, ship a genuinely open-source desktop client with proper signing that focuses on features the official app refuses to offer. On the day you create the repo, pitch newsletters, open PRs to Awesome lists, and reach out to KOLs.

C grade: Hongguo already has a dozen repos, and big accounts have recommended some, so following in now will struggle to win stars. What's worth copying is the playbook: "mobile-exclusive content + open-source desktop client + self-submitted curated lists." But projects that bypass the official stream can be blocked or taken down at any time, which is a real risk for developers who care about their reputation. Whispers in the small circle

Hongguo has tens of millions of users but only a mobile app, and there is no official client for Mac at all. Starting in September 2026, a dozen or so "Hongguo desktop" repos appeared on GitHub. jackotom/hongguo-drama wasn't the first or the biggest, but it is the only one in this wave that is genuinely open source, signed for Mac, and focused on downloading. It got 959 stars and 142 forks in one month (GitHub, 11-06). Below: how it stood out from the crowd, and if you want a project that earns stars the same way, what to copy and what to avoid.

### Nov 2 afternoon, playback suddenly broke

On Nov 2 2026, around 3–4 PM Beijing time, several new items appeared in its issue tracker at once: "Playback failed?" (#84), "Playback seems broken now" (#85), "Playback seems broken now, can someone look into what's wrong" (#86). In #86 a user captured the traffic and traced the cause: when requesting the playback URL, 5.3.0 wasn't sending a signature header, and from around 08:20 UTC Hongguo's server began enforcing signature verification, returning "HTTP 200, but 0 bytes" for unsigned requests. He pasted the fixed code directly into the issue and attached a comparison table, saying "I can organize it into a PR if needed."

Over the next two days the author shipped 5.3 and 5.4, and playback was restored. The v5.4 installer was downloaded 9,190 times, the most of any of its versions (GitHub release download counts). Stars rose by 69, 73, and 69 per day over those three days, its fastest growth period (GitHub, 11-01 to 11-03).

This episode basically sums up the project: the user base is real, technical, and willing to help; what it does sits in a spot the platform could cut off at any time; and it survived because it fixed things fast.

### What it is

A desktop app built with Electron, with installers for Mac (Apple Silicon and Intel), Windows, and Linux. Once open, you can search, stream online, download by episode or range, merge downloaded episodes for export, and build a local library to pick up where you left off next time. It also accepts custom sources in the Apple CMS V10 format. The first screen of the README reads "Discover good shows, pick up where you left off."

It wasn't written from scratch. In the author's self-submission to Ruan Yifeng's "Tech Enthusiast Weekly," he is clear about the lineage: the original upstream is 327044572/hongguo-downloader, and the direct base is zhenyong97/hongguo-downloader (Windows only, Hongguo only, no updates since September 24). On top of that he added Mac, two more sources, playback, and series tracking, and the license remains GPL-3.0. Paid episodes are not unlocked, and the README explicitly states "no paid-episode unlocking is provided."

### Why now: the phone has it, the computer doesn't

Hongguo Short Drama is a free short-drama app launched by ByteDance's Douyin group in August 2023, with 9.25M ratings on the China iOS App Store (App Store, 11-06). It only has iPhone and iPad versions. On Windows you can use the "Hongguo Free Short Drama" from the Microsoft Store or install the Android version from Tencent's App Treasure; on Mac there's nothing at all. People who want to watch on a big screen, avoid ads, download for offline viewing, or put shows on a NAS for their parents' TV have no option but to search, and the search lands on GitHub (inferred).

This gap was targeted by a crowd of people at the same time in September 2026:

| Repo | Approach | Repo created | star | Stars gained in the last 7 days |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| waligoraamodio288-rgb/hongguo-desktop-releases | Installers only; the Mac build is still beta | 09-14 | 5,466 | 412 |
| yangbin1322/hongguo-player | Installers only; the README says "no source code included"; distributed via domestic download sites and Lanzou | 09-29 | 2,787 | 890 |
| zhoufuweigg/guoapp | Private short-drama client | 09-26 | 1,692 | 144 |
| **jackotom/hongguo-drama** | **Open source, Mac signing and notarization, focused on downloading and library** | **10-07** | **959** | **350** |
| aston314/hongguo-tv-releases, N3urda/hongguoTV | TV client | 09-21 ~ 10-07 | 869 / 874 | 370 / 45 |
| parallelpan/hongguo-downloader | Cloud downloads on the web, paid per episode | 10-31 | 479 | New |

(Star counts and weekly growth are GitHub's numbers 11-06.)

The sharp jump in early November wasn't unique to it: aston314 and waligora were also surging the same day. The heat belongs to the whole category, not just this project.

### Why it stood out from the crowd

The two repos with more stars than it both only ship installers. jackotom's difference lies in four things:

**It's genuinely open source.** When installing a player of unknown origin, users care whether they can see the source code. Developers can fork and modify it: its fork-to-star ratio is about 15%, while installer-only peers sit at just 4% to 6% (waligora 298/5,416, yangbin 116/2,676). Someone forked a Linux backup, and someone (dawei233) built danmaku in a fork that was then ported back into the main project.

**The Mac build is done properly.** Both architecture DMGs are signed with a Developer ID and pass Apple notarization, so users don't have to disable Gatekeeper. Most peers only have a proper Windows release, while the Mac version is labeled "beta."

**Downloading is a core feature.** Download by episode, by range, or the whole series; merge and export; write NFO files into NAS directories; resume after failures. The official app doesn't offer any of this, and peers that only handle playback don't emphasize it.

**Fixes are fast.** Over 30 days it went from v1.1.3 to v6.1, about 60 stable releases, with 5 released in one day on Nov 3. All 206 commits are from jackotom alone; the release notes' phrasing like "acceptance receipt" and "relay boundary" looks like it was batch-generated by an AI coding assistant (inferred). Requests from issues such as full-screen autoplay, a boss key, long-press 2x speed, DLNA casting, and NAS directories typically shipped within a day or two.

### Where users come from

Almost all of it was pushed out by the author, plus Mac-scene people sharing it:

- **Self-submitted the day the repo was created.** In Oct 7, the author opened issue #12122 on ruanyf/weekly, titled "[Open-source pitch] Hongguo Short Drama 1.2.1: Mac / Windows, three-source playback, pre-buffers the next episode on play." Whether the newsletter included it wasn't found.

- **Listed on Awesome Mac.** jaywcjlove/awesome-mac's Chinese and English READMEs both list "Hongguo Drama," marked as open source and free.

- **Picked up by Mac KOLs.** Awesome Mac's maintainer 调调 (@jaywcjlove) recommended it on X in Oct 11 as an "open-source Mac short-drama player and downloader." On Nov 4, the media account @shenxiankk posted about it too.

- **Search and AI answers.** A CSDN Library AI-generated answer from Oct 27 lists it as the leading third-party open-source client; searching "红果短剧 桌面版 Mac 开源" puts it first.

- Bilibili, YouTube and Douyin have plenty of "Hongguo desktop on GitHub, no ads" videos, but most cover the whole category. Few name it specifically.

Its two biggest channels (Awesome Mac and 调调) both came in through "open source + Mac." Repos that only ship installers can't get those placements. Still, it gains stars more slowly than the closed-source yangbin1322 (350 vs 890 over the last 7 days). Its total volume comes from the category's heat; its differentiation is why people recommend it separately within that crowd.

### Where the risk is

This kind of project is a gray area. Its stream-fetching code includes anonymous device registration, request signing, and upstream decryption, all of which work around the official client. The Nov 2 episode came when the platform tightened signature checks. The next blow could be an API block or a GitHub takedown request. The installer-only projects face the same risk; the difference is that this one's code is fully public.

Two things are still unverified: how the early stars grew (there's no day-by-day data before 16 Oct 7, and how many users came from 调调's repost is unknown), and the ~100k installer downloads include Mac auto-update packages, which are double-counted, so the real user count is unclear.

### If it were you

**Bottom line:** The Hongguo category is already crowded. A "Hongguo desktop" clone today won't get many stars. What's worth copying is the playbook: the big platform only built a mobile content product; this project shipped a truly open-source desktop client with proper signing, then pushed its way onto lists and into KOL posts.

**Who it suits:** People who know Electron or Tauri, have an Apple developer account for signing and notarization, will read issues daily and fix bugs, and want stars and name recognition in the Chinese developer community.

**Who it doesn't suit:** Anyone who wants to make money from it (once you charge, you're on the parallelpan path, with much higher risk); anyone who doesn't want the platform sending takedown letters or their GitHub account carrying a removal record; anyone without time for long-term maintenance. The API changes every few days, and users leave after a week of no updates.

**How to do it:**

1. Look for the gap first. Find content platforms with tens of millions of users that have only a phone app and no official PC or TV client: novels, audiobooks, rival short-drama apps, comics. Aggregator clients like Fanqie (ch6vip/fqapp) are already growing.

2. When competitors are all closed source, go open source. Sign and notarize the Mac build, and put a download table for every platform on the first screen of the README.

3. Build the one feature the official app won't offer. For Hongguo, that's downloads and a local library. Don't touch paid content, and say so clearly in the README.

4. Use an AI coding assistant to keep releases frequent. When the API breaks, a fix within two days is the best retention you can get.

**How to get users:** On the day you create the repo, open a submission issue on Ruan Yifeng's weekly newsletter. Open PRs against lists like Awesome Mac. DM KOLs in the Mac and open-source circles. Write titles with the exact words users search for, like "XX for PC," "Mac client," "open source."

**When to be early:** These gaps usually get swarmed. From the first Hongguo repo (Sep 8) to a dozen-plus clones took just over a month. For a new category, launch within two or three weeks of the first wave appearing. Once Bilibili tutorials spread, it's too late.

**Signs you've misread it:** The original platform releases a desktop or full web version; GitHub starts mass-removing these repos; or after two weeks you're still not picked up by any list or KOL and your stars stay in the double digits. That means the open-source-plus-signing card isn't working in that category.

## jackotom/hongguo-drama: the Hongguo desktop client, and why it reached nearly a thousand stars

Data as of 2026-11-06. Sources: GitHub API (live), our GitHub database (repo_profile / repo_day, daily from 2026-10-28), Jina web search.

### One line

An Electron-built third-party Hongguo desktop client (Mac arm64/x64, Windows, Linux) that aggregates search, playback, downloads, merging and series tracking across three sources: Hongguo, Xifan and Hippo. Created 2026-10-07, 878 stars in 30 days (11-06 in our database) / 959 stars and 142 forks live.

It isn't an isolated hit. It's one of a **2026 9–October wave of third-party "Hongguo desktop" clients on GitHub** , and it ranks #3–4 in that wave. What sets it apart: most of the leaders in the wave are installer-only release repos with no source. It's the only one that reached real scale while being **truly open source (GPL-3.0), with Mac signing and notarization, and built around downloads and a local library** .

### 1. First, the competitors: a crowd is doing the same thing

Hongguo Short Drama is a free short-drama app launched by ByteDance (Douyin Group) 2023-08. Its China App Store has 9.25M ratings (iTunes lookup, 2026-11-06), and it's only on iPhone/iPad. On Windows there's the Microsoft Store "Hongguo Free Short Drama" and PC App Store / emulator workarounds, but **there's no native official Mac client** (CSDN Library's 2026-10-27 answer says so too. Tencent App Store's blog 2026-11 says "Hongguo has no official Windows client; use App Store to install the Android version"). This gap was swarmed by a batch of GitHub projects at once in 2026 September:

| Project | Form | Repo created | stars (live/database) | Stars gained in the last 7 days | How it differs from jackotom |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| waligoraamodio288-rgb/hongguo-desktop-releases ("channel data") | Installer-only; Win stable, Mac M-series beta, Android TV | 2026-09-14 | 5,466 | 412 | No source, not promoting downloads; database flags "new account, single-repo surge" |
| yangbin1322/hongguo-player | Installer-only (README says "does not include source code"); Win/Mac; Chinese download sites and Lanzou | 2026-09-29 | 2,787 | 890 | Grew fastest in this wave; closed source, no download promotion |
| zhoufuweigg/guoapp, Xanerix/guoapp ("Hongguo Jian / Zhen Guo Jian") | Private short-drama client | 2026-09-26 / 10-02 | 1,692 / 935 | 144 / 365 | Positioned as a "private client" |
| N3urda/hongguoTV, aston314/hongguo-tv-releases, jycao2/hongguoTV | Android TV / webOS focus | 2026-09-21 ~ 10-12 | 874 / 869 / 97 | 45 / 370 / – | Focused on TV |
| parallelpan/hongguo-downloader | Web version with cloud downloads, pay per episode | 2026-10-31 | 479 | New | The only one clearly charging money |
| zfdang/hongguo-open-player, kiroswu/hongguo-shortdramabox, liangzai-kk/hongguo-short-drama-desktop | Open-source / lightweight players, super-resolution | 10-08 ~ 10-27 | 204 / 226 / 227 | Small | Small scale |
| zhenyong97/hongguo-downloader | Windows downloader (Electron+React), **jackotom's direct upstream** | 2026-09-16 | 141 | ~3/day | Stopped updating after 9-24 |
| 327044572/hongguo-downloader | The earliest batch downloader, **the original upstream** , linked to a commercial site 111330.com | 2026-09-08 | 57 | – | Windows only |
| Official: Microsoft Store "Hongguo Free Short Drama", PC Tencent App Store, Android emulators | Big companies / official | – | – | – | Has ads, no native Mac version |

(star/growth: github repo_profile 2026-11-06; live value from GitHub API 2026-11-06.)

Verdict: **there are plenty of competitors** . It's a "platform gap + a crowd racing for it at once" situation. jackotom is neither the first nor the biggest.

### 2. Growth data

- star: 10-17 265 → 11-06 878 (repo), live 959; last 7 days +350, first 7 days +158; single-day peak 73 (11-02).

- fork 142, fork/star ≈ 15%, while similar release-only repos sit at 4–6% (waligora 298/5416, yangbin 116/2676), because it's the only source repo you can fork and modify.

- Cumulative downloads from release packages are about 100k (GitHub API sum of download_count for dmg/exe/zip/AppImage, including Mac auto-update zips, so there's double counting; only the order of magnitude is meaningful). Peak single version v5.4 (11-02) 9,190 downloads.

- Release pace: 30 days, about 60 official releases (v1.1.3 → v6.1), with 11-05 shipping 3 versions in a single day. All 206 commits come from one author, jackotom; the README and release notes ("acceptance receipts", "handoff boundaries", "source recorded at freeze") read like batch output from an AI coding agent.

- The 11-01~11-03 spike (69/73/69) also showed up at the same time for similar projects (aston314 96/87, waligora 68/65/88), so it's category-wide heat, not unique to it. In the same period, issues clustered around "playback broken" (#84, #85, #86, #91,11-02); it shipped 5.3→5.4 to restore playback within two days, and v5.4 got 9,190 downloads, the highest of the whole period.

### 3. Where users came from (growth tactics)

1. **Self-nominated to Ruan Yifeng's Tech Enthusiast Weekly** : the author himself opened issue #12122 on ruanyf/weekly on the day the repo was created, titled "【Open-source self-recommendation】Hongguo Drama 1.2.1" (10-07). Whether the weekly included it is unverified. (GitHub issue, confirmed)

2. **Listed in Awesome Mac** : "Hongguo Drama" is included in both the Chinese and English READMEs of jaywcjlove/awesome-mac (the largest Mac software list), tagged open source + free. (Checked current README, confirmed)

3. **Recommended on X by 小弟调调 (@jaywcjlove, Awesome Mac author) 10-11** , titled "Hongguo Drama - open-source Mac short-drama player and downloader." (Jina read the post, existence confirmed; engagement numbers not retrieved)

4. **Secondary spread by self-media accounts** : X @shenxiankk ("AI tool sharing | self-media creator") 11-04 posted an introduction; Zhihu, Bilibili, YouTube and Douyin have a batch of videos titled along the lines of "Hongguo Drama desktop GitHub expert build, no ads". Most of them discuss the whole category, and few are confirmed to name it specifically. (Jina search, partly confirmed)

5. **AI Q&A / content-farm SEO** : CSDN Wenku 10-27's AIGC Q&A lists hongguo-drama (v1.72) as a representative third-party open-source client; searching "Hongguo Drama desktop Mac open source" ranks it first. (Confirmed)

6. **Platform gap** : among the 9.25M Hongguo raters, people who want to watch on a big Mac screen, want no ads, and want to download for offline/NAS viewing can't find an official option, and search leads them to GitHub. (Inference)

No ad spend, TrustMRR or revenue data found; it doesn't charge anyway (GPL, free, explicitly no paid unlock).

### 4. Why this one broke out (vs. comparable projects)

- **Native Mac + signed and notarized** : universal DMG signed with Developer ID, notarized by Apple, and stapled. Comparable projects are mostly Windows-first with Mac as a "beta", or require users to disable Gatekeeper. Awesome Mac and 小弟调调's recommendations were both aimed at "Mac" specifically.

- **The only truly open-source one** : the two biggest players are repos that only ship installers. Users of an unknown-origin drama client care about the source, and developers can fork it and modify it (15% fork rate, a Linux backup fork exists, and dawei233's danmaku implementation was ported back into it).

- **Download and local library are the core selling points** : download by episode, range or full series, merged export, NAS directory + NFO, resumable retries. Official apps don't offer this, and pure-player competitors don't emphasize it. It answers real needs like "stockpiling shows" and "putting it on the TV for my parents".

- **Three sources aggregated** : beyond Hongguo, it connects Xifan and Hippo, and also supports custom Apple CMS V10 sources, so if one source goes down, others still work.

- **One person + AI agent iterating at a crazy pace** : 30 days, 60 versions. Requests from issues (full-screen autoplay, a boss key, double-click fullscreen, long-press 2× speed, DLNA casting, NAS) usually ship within a day or two, and breakage when the platform changes its API gets fixed within two days. Retention comes from this.

### 5. Differentiation and whether it broke out because of it

Differentiation = "open source + native signed Mac + download/local library + multiple sources", not "Hongguo desktop" itself (everyone is doing that). From a channel standpoint, its two most important exposures (the Awesome Mac listing and 小弟调调's share) were only available because of the Mac + open-source attributes, so the differentiation really is why it could be singled out among a crowd of release-only repos. But its overall reach still comes from category heat. It gathers stars more slowly than the closed-source yangbin1322 (7 days, 890 vs 350).

### 6. How visible it is

Word spreading in small circles: Chinese developers and the Mac community (Awesome Mac, 小弟调调, Ruan Yifeng's weekly self-nomination, several self-media accounts, CSDN AIGC Q&A). No press coverage and no in-depth reviews from big accounts. But the "Hongguo desktop" category it sits in is already crowded (a dozen-plus repos, plenty of Bilibili/YouTube tutorials).

### 7. Copycats

Comparable projects that surfaced at the same time are in the table above. Direct derivatives: dawei233/hongguo-drama (created 10-12, same name and description), yxt02's Linux backup fork, and frostming/dsh-hongguo (11-04, a agent-side sidebar watching plugin built on openhongguo), showing that "third-party Hongguo clients" have already become something that can be turned into plugins.

### 8. What to borrow

- Look for category gaps where big platforms only do mobile and not desktop/TV (short dramas, novels and audiobooks all share this structure, and the ch6vip/fqapp Fanqie aggregators are also growing).

- When every comparable project is a closed-source release repo, going genuinely open source + Mac signing and notarization earns you eligibility for Awesome lists and KOL recommendations.

- Self-nomination channels are very cheap: Ruan Yifeng's weekly issue, Awesome Mac PRs, and pitching projects to Mac-community KOLs.

- Using an AI agent to release at a very high frequency and quickly follow up on issues: in a gray-area category where the API often gets broken by the platform, "fixing it fastest" is itself retention.

### 9. Uncertain

- Legal/platform risk: it bypasses official stream access (anonymous device registration, request signing, CENC decryption upstream), and ByteDance could cut the API or send a takedown notice at any time. It sits in a gray zone.

- Star time distribution was not retrieved (the stargazers endpoint returned 404), so the 10-07~10-16 early curve and the actual traffic from 小弟调调's share 10-11 are unverified.

- Whether Ruan Yifeng's weekly included it and the Awesome Mac listing date are unverified.

- The 100k download figure double-counts auto-update packages, so the real number of users is unknown.
