DSH-Android: a tweet with 110k views gets a two-months-late Android port 840 stars

What it is A free, open-source Android APK that needs no root and no Termux, embedding the whole DeepSeek Harness inside the app so AI can read the screen and tap for you, operating WeChat, Xiaohongshu, BOSS, and Taobao, and also changing system settings and running automatically on schedules or conditions.

Why it took off After DeepSeek Harness went open source, "running DSH on a phone" was an obvious need. The author is also behind OpenCLI, a series with 41k stars, and a launch tweet with 115k views brought in nearly 40% of the stars. The technical approach (compiling Node into a native library, no fork) was the talking point in reposts.

CHow you could follow Stop building a DSH Android client. What's worth copying is its architecture and release playbook: when the next agent framework goes open source, ship a mobile version within the first week, launch with clear technical selling points and an answer to "what if it won't install", and add an emotional hook to keep users.

C grade: the track already has dozens of comparable projects, dsh-Go gained over ten thousand stars and is still adding two thousand a day, and this one is cooling off on its own. Its stars came mainly from the author's own following, which followers can't reproduce. The architecture and playbook are worth learning, but copying it directly isn't worth it. Year 2026 Oct 29 at 5:00 (Beijing time), OpenCLI's author @jakevin (卡比卡比) posted on X: "DSH mobile APP is here! DeepSeekHarness Android version is open source!!! (unofficial)". It was accompanied by three screenshots and the line "I'm already using it on my own Android, feedback welcome". The tweet reached 115k views, and the repo went from 7 to 335 stars that day. But "bringing DSH to Android" had already been done by dozens of people two and a half months earlier. dsh-Go, which went into public beta a day later the same week, has 13× its stars. This piece covers why it took off, and why you shouldn't build yet another one.

What it is

A free, open-source (Apache-2.0) Android APK that needs no root and no Termux. It installs DeepSeek Harness (dsh, the agent framework DeepSeek open-sourced in August) entirely on the phone so AI can use the phone for you. The first item in the README reads: "send messages and summarize group chats on WeChat, scrape content from Xiaohongshu, apply and greet on BOSS Zhipin, and place orders on Taobao for you".

What it can do: use the accessibility service to read the screen, tap and type inside other apps; organize files and read text from PDF, Word and Excel; change brightness, Wi‑Fi, Do Not Disturb and alarms; run on a schedule, or trigger automatically when connected to Wi‑Fi, when charging starts, or on arrival at a location; and in any app, use a floating ball to send the current screen to it and ask "how should I reply to this". On Android 14 and above with Shizuku set up, it can also operate on a virtual display without taking over your screen. The model isn't locked in: beyond DeepSeek, OpenAI, Claude, Kimi, Zhipu and Qwen can all be connected.

The technical point that sets it apart from similar apps, and that's getting quoted in tweets and retweets: Node 24 is compiled into an Android native library and runs dsh inside the App's foreground service. No proot, no Termux, no fork of dsh. So skills, MCP and sub-agents all work unchanged, with a cold start of about 5 seconds (per the README).

Why now

The platform open-sourced, so demand was ready-made. DeepSeek Harness went open source in August 13, reached 275k stars by November 6 (GitHub), and the awesome list just for its plugins has 23k stars. "Running DSH on a phone too" is exactly what this crowd would naturally want. In October 31, DeepSeek released dsh-superagent-prototype (19k stars), pushing the topic's heat up another notch.

But it wasn't the first. In the four days from August 13 to 16, DSHA, dsh-pocket, dsh-mobile-apk and woaiys3's deepseek-harness-android-app all appeared together. Someone wrote a piece in early September called "Four Routes" comparing Shizuku, Termux and proot. DSH-Android was created only in October 27, so it belongs to the second wave.

The author's account is what actually did the work. jackwener is a PMC member of Apache Arrow, DataFusion and Doris. His OpenCLI repo has 30.9k stars, and he also maintains wx-cli, xiaohongshu-cli and boss-cli, all tools that let agents operate Chinese apps. He has 3225 followers on GitHub, and his repos add up to 41k stars. The DSH-Android README leads with WeChat, Xiaohongshu and BOSS, which is exactly what that existing audience cares about.

(Figures before 10-31 come from gitrank.cc snapshots, later ones from our daily records. The two sources differ by a few dozen stars, which doesn't change the conclusion.)

About 840 stars in total, nearly 40% of them on the first day. It never made GitHub Trending (the repo wasn't yet two months old), got no media coverage, and has no Bilibili or YouTube videos. The opening of A-Lin's review is blunt: "Want to run an agent on your phone? Before, you had to root it or cram in Termux." That's the point people who reposted it bought into.

The people who stayed were actually using it. In 10 days it shipped 28 versions (v0.1.1 to v0.3.11). Release downloads add up to roughly 25k (this includes the in-app auto-updater, so it isn't a user count). It has 87 forks, and the fork-to-star ratio is about 10.5%, in line with other new repos from the same period. The author also fixed the install problem on Chinese phones: from v0.3.5 on it's signed with v1, and the README has a full section on what to do when installation fails.

Doubao Phone and other system-level AISince end of 2025—Needs system permissions, so you have to buy a dedicated phone

Two comparisons make the point. woaiys3 was doing "real phone control" two months earlier and got only 699 stars. Droy and Tdsh have nearly the same positioning and sit at a few dozen to a few hundred stars. So the technical route explains only a small part of it. What separates them by an order of magnitude is the author's audience.

On the other side, dsh-Go went public one day later and got 13 times the stars. Its author was already known in the DSH community (he wrote the DSH-TUI plugin), and the project came with a desktop pet, a website, a forum and a QQ group, plus #1 on the daily chart and a round of media coverage. To DSH users, "embedded in-process versus a full Ubuntu install" matters less than persona and community. The two projects' copy and features are now converging ("no root, no Termux", "do-not-disturb mode", "remote control of PCs"). Who copied whom first is unverified.

If it were you

C. There are already dozens of projects for "DSH on Android". The biggest has over 10,000 stars and is still adding about 2,000 a day, and DSH-Android itself is cooling off (daily gains fell from +328 to +16). It took off on the back of the author's 41k-star following, which a follower can't get. You can learn the approach and the architecture from it, but building another DSH Android client isn't worth it.

Best for: people who already have a following among developers on X, Jike or Bilibili, and who have a ready-made "agent operates apps" tool. Also people comfortable with native Android development who are willing to port this architecture to another agent framework.

Not for: people with no distribution channel who are counting on organic GitHub discovery, or anyone trying to break into DSH mobile now. The first wave filled up within four days, and the second wave already has dsh-Go pressing down on it.

How to do it: don't build a DSH client. Copy the architecture: compile Node into a native Android library that runs in a foreground service, write the phone capabilities in Kotlin and expose them to the agent through a capability bridge, run upstream unchanged, and don't fork. Build the phone version of the next open-source agent framework that takes off (or Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode, or any tool that still lacks a decent Android client) in the first few days after it opens up. To win, be first in the first wave, not two months later. Switching device types also works: porting "AI operates it for you" to TVs, car systems or tablets. I haven't seen that space crowded yet (inference, unverified). Whichever you pick, write the "what to do when installation fails" section into the README as they did: signing, false positives from Play Protect, and autostart on Chinese ROMs. Most sideload drop-off happens right there.

How to get users: the launch is everything. Post one tweet with screenshots and a single sentence on the technical selling point, plus "I use it every day myself." Then get Chinese AI review accounts to write long-form pieces. The technical selling point alone isn't enough. Copy dsh-Go: prepare an emotional hook (a desktop pet, a mascot), then open a group to keep early users around.

Deadline: for DSH, the window has already closed. For the next platform, the window is the first week after it opens up.

Where I got it wrong: ① someone without a big account, relying only on GitHub and organic search, could still build a DSH mobile project that gains over 1000 stars a month. That would mean demand in this niche isn't saturated yet, so C was too low; ② if DeepSeek ships an official Android client, dsh-Go gets crushed too, and this direction should be D; ③ DSH-Android has kept a lot of real users because of its "operate apps" capability (issues and downloads keep rising), which suggests the technical route really is a moat, not just talking points.

Why jackwener/DSH-Android took off

Research date 2026-11-06. Data from our GitHub database (repo_profile / repo_day), the GitHub API, gitrank.cc snapshots, and original posts on X / Threads / Instagram / blogs (read via Jina).

One line

An unofficial Android APK that drops the DeepSeek Harness (dsh) engine unchanged into the app process, so it runs on the phone and can read the screen and tap through apps like WeChat, Xiaohongshu, BOSS and Taobao. It reached about 840 stars in 10 days, mostly from the author's own X launch (115k views). It rode the "DSH goes mobile" wave, but that niche is already crowded, and the biggest winner in the same period was dsh-Go, not this one.

1. Basic data

  • Created 2026-10-27 under the original name DeepseekHarness-Android, later renamed DSH-Android. Kotlin, Apache-2.0.
  • Star curve (10-28 to 11-03 from gitrank.cc snapshots; from 11-01 on, from our repo): 10-28 7 → 10-29 335 (+328 in one day) → 10-30 505 → 10-31 626 → 11-01 624/691 → 11-02 749 → 11-03 760/749 → 11-04 780 → 11-05 816 → 11-06 832 (our repo) / 841 (live GitHub API). Daily gains fell from +328 to +16; it has clearly cooled off.
  • Forks 87 to 90; fork-to-star ratio about 10.5%, in line with the median for new repos of the same age (about 11%), not high.
  • Shipped very often: 10-28 to 11-06 saw 28 versions (v0.1.1 → v0.3.11). Cumulative Release attachment downloads about 25k (GitHub API; this includes repeat downloads from the in-app auto-updater and isn't a user count).
  • Author jackwener (X handle @jakevin, "卡比卡比") is a PMC member of Apache Arrow, DataFusion and Doris. Their projects include OpenCLI (30.9k stars), wx-cli (4045), xiaohongshu-cli (2723) and boss-cli (1038). They have 3225 followers on GitHub and 41k total stars across our library.

2. Background: the platform event

  • DeepSeek open-sourced DeepSeek Harness (dsh, MIT license) on 2026-08-13. It now has 275k stars (GitHub API). The community quickly produced a wave of plugins and clients, and awesome-dsh-plugin alone has 23k stars.
  • "Getting DSH onto Android" produced several routes in the four days from 08-13 to 08-16 (blog.mushroom.cv wrote "Four Routes" on 2026-09-06). So DSH-Android is the second wave, arriving two and a half months after the first.

3. Competitors (start with the competitors)

Both mean the same thing: running DSH or an LLM agent locally on an Android phone so the AI can operate the phone.

Conclusion: when DSH-Android arrived, there were already dozens of projects bringing DSH to Android. Its star count ranks around #9 among similar projects (our library, DSH mobile projects ranked by stars).

4. Growth tactics (where users come from)

  1. The author's own first post on X (confirmed, the main driver). @jakevin posted "DSH mobile app is here! DeepSeekHarness Android version is open source!!! (unofficial)" at 2026-10-29 09:21 UTC, which got 115.5K views. The star count went from 7 to 335 that day (gitrank.cc), and the timing matches.
  2. The author's second push on X (confirmed). On 10-31 they posted an update on the floating window, plugin system and background-screen operation. From 10-31 to 11-01 it gained +60–120 stars per day.
  3. Reposts by Chinese AI news accounts (confirmed). A-Lin (@alin_zone) published a long review thread on 11-01. On Threads, @dailyaionly posted about it (1.7K views on 10-30). On Instagram, @gitscope posted an auto-generated roundup on 11-01 titled "trending discovery #10" (from its own chart, not GitHub trending).
  4. The author's existing reach (inferred): OpenCLI, xiaohongshu-cli and boss-cli are all tools for "letting agents operate Chinese apps," and the README's pitch (sending WeChat messages, browsing Xiaohongshu, greeting on BOSS) targets the same audience.
  5. Riding platform heat (confirmed): the repo name and description directly use DeepSeek Harness / DSH, so searching "DSH Android" finds it.
  6. GitHub trending: none. The repo was under 60 days old and could not chart (our library trending_days_any=0).
  7. No found coverage in ads, dedicated Bilibili or YouTube videos, or media reports. Zhidongxi, NetEase and Zhihu all covered dsh-Go.

5. Why it took off

  • Timing: DSH was the hottest agent platform in the Chinese developer community in the second half of 2026 (275k stars), so "DSH on a phone" was an existing need. In late October DeepSeek also released dsh-superagent-prototype (10-3.12M stars), which pushed DSH attention up another notch.
  • The author had distribution: one post with 115k views accounts for most of the 840 stars. Without that account, similar APKs usually reach only 70–340 stars (Droy, Tdsh, guzhou079).
  • The technical selling point is clear: "Node 24 compiled into an Android native .so, running inside a foreground service, without forking dsh." It's lighter than the proot / Termux route (cold start about 5 seconds), and skills, MCP, and sub-agents all work unchanged. This is the line people quote in tweets and reviews.
  • Scenarios Chinese users care about: the first line of the README is operating WeChat, Xiaohongshu, BOSS and Taobao, continuing the author's CLI series.
  • Fast iteration: 28 releases in 10 days, including a fix for signing issues that stopped domestic-brand phones from installing (v0.3.5 added a v1 signature). People who stayed got something usable, and there are 87 forks.

6. Differentiation, and whether that's why it broke out

  • Differentiation: (1) the engine is embedded in the process as a native Node library, so it does not use proot or Termux and does not fork dsh; (2) all phone capabilities are written on the Kotlin side and exposed to dsh through a capability bridge. It is pitched as "AI operating the phone" (reading the screen and tapping, system settings, scheduled and conditional triggers, a floating ball, Shizuku virtual display), not as "installing a Linux on your phone."
  • Does this explain why it has an order of magnitude more stars than Droy or Tdsh? Only partly. woaiys3 built "real phone operation via Shizuku plus accessibility" two months earlier and has only 699 stars. The main gap comes from the author's account and launch timing.
  • Looking at it the other way, dsh-Go went public a day later and got 13 times the stars. dsh-Go relied on emotional hooks and community operations (the whale desktop pet, PC remote control, a website, a forum, a QQ group). The author was already known in the DSH circle (DSH-TUI), and it had a Trendshift #1 daily ranking and a round of media coverage. So to DSH users, technical differentiation was not the deciding factor; distribution and persona were. DSH-Android's README later added "SSH / DSH Remote to connect to a PC" and a "do not disturb mode" and moved toward dsh-Go's feature set (who built it first is unverified).

7. How visible it is

Word in small circles: Chinese AI developers reshared it on X (the author's first post reached 115k views, plus A-Lin's review), along with several overseas aggregator accounts (Threads, Instagram, gitrank). There was no media coverage and no GitHub trending placement. Media attention for the whole category went to dsh-Go. No revenue is involved; it is open source and free.

8. Copycats

I found no direct copying. But there are many similar projects. After 10-29, dsh-Go and DSH-Android have nearly identical form and copy ("no root, no Termux," "do not disturb mode," "remote PC control"), and the two are converging. Earlier projects already included Droy (10-26), Tdsh (09-26), guzhou079 (09-29) and others.

9. What others can learn

  • In the 2–3 months after a major platform goes open source, ports that move it to another device (phone, TV, car system, watch) can catch platform traffic. But the first wave fills up within four days, so a second-wave entrant needs a better technical route plus an account with distribution, ideally with a persona and an emotional hook (see dsh-Go's whale pet).
  • The architecture of "embedded Node native library + Kotlin capability bridge + running upstream agents unchanged, no fork" could be reused for other agent frameworks (Android versions of Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode).
  • Writing "what to do if it won't install" in the README (signing, Play Protect false positives, domestic-ROM autostart) noticeably reduces drop-off when people sideload the APK.

10. Uncertain

  • Real install base: 25k release downloads, which include in-app updates and repeat downloads, so the number of unique users is unknown.
  • @jakevin's follower count, and which larger accounts were in the repost chain (no such posts were captured in x-radar's local corpus), are unverified.
  • Who built "do not disturb mode" and "PC remote control" first between DSH-Android and dsh-Go is unverified.
  • Star counts around 11-01 come from two sources (gitrank 691 / our library 624). The difference is small and does not affect the conclusions.
