Mijia had no desktop version; one person filled the gap in 22 days, got 926 stars, and then the whole account disappeared
What it is A free, open-source tool that controls Mijia devices from the Mac menu bar and the Windows 11 tray: log in by scanning a QR code with your phone, with pinyin-initial search and press-and-hold voice commands.
Why it took off Xiaomi has no official desktop client, and its promise of "scan to use, no need to set up Home Assistant" hit the pain point exactly. The author pitched it to Ruan Yifeng's weekly newsletter and got it into awesome-mac, and then major Chinese productivity accounts such as geekbb (51.2k views) kept reposting it.
A How you could follow Right after the original disappeared, build a successor that defaults to LAN control and is not at risk of account bans (or ship a good Windows version, or extend to ecosystems like Tuya and Midea). Follow the original's path: pitch the weekly newsletter, get into awesome-mac, and find productivity accounts to repost it.

MenuBarMijia lets you switch Mijia lights, air conditioners, and plugs straight from the Mac menu bar or the Windows 11 tray. Scan a code with the Mijia app on your phone and it connects, with no need to set up Home Assistant first. The author is a self-described "non-professional vibe coder" and a Sspai contributor. The repo was created in Oct 15. Through three Chinese amplifiers, 小弟调调, Ruan Yifeng's weekly newsletter, and geekbb, it reached 926 stars within 22 days (GitHub, 11-06). In Nov 6 the repo, the author's account, and the website all became 404. It proved that this gap had buyers, and now the gap is open again.
A tweet with 50k views
On the afternoon of Nov 1, 2026, @geekbb posted on X: "This project is awesome. It brings Mijia device control into the macOS menu bar and the Windows 11 tray. Scan a QR code to connect directly to Xiaomi's cloud, add and remove devices, search by keyboard, and operate it by press-and-hold voice, without pulling out your phone or setting up Home Assistant first." It came with a screenshot of the menu bar panel, got 51.2k views, 406 likes, and 59 reposts (X, 11-06).
The most-liked comment in the replies: "The best part is that you don't need to set up Home Assistant first. So many people's smart homes get stuck at exactly that step." ahhhhfs (@abskoop) reposted it: "The whole Xiaomi family bucket is thrilled, you can actually log in by scanning a code and sync your Mijia devices with one click."
Over the next two days, the repo gained 243 and 273 stars by Trendshift's daily data, and reached #1 on Trendshift's Swift chart. This was its biggest wave.
What it is
Mijia is the largest smart-home ecosystem in China by installed base, but Xiaomi's official offering is only a phone app, with no macOS or Windows client. Controlling Mijia from a computer used to take a long route: deploy Home Assistant, install Xiaomi's official HA integration (XiaoMi/ha_xiaomi_home, 22.3k stars), bridge into HomeKit, and finally use someone else's HomeKit menu bar tool.
MenuBarMijia reduces that chain to one step:
- Direct QR login: scan a code with the Mijia app on your phone to log in to Xiaomi Cloud, and devices sync automatically. Users who already run HA can connect too.
- Keyboard search: press ⌥M to bring up the panel, type pinyin initials (
sftdfinds "书房台灯", the study desk lamp), press Enter to toggle, and use the arrow keys to adjust brightness and color temperature, without switching input methods. - Press and hold to speak: hold the menu bar icon, speak, release to execute. No wake word needed. Clear commands are parsed locally, and only ambiguous ones are sent to a cloud model.
- One-click undo, auto turn-off of lights on screen lock, 9 skins, Homebrew install. The Mac version is written in Swift, and the Windows version uses Tauri.
Free and open source, MIT license. The catch: it runs on Xiaomi's private cloud APIs. The README says it outright: Xiaomi has banned accounts that used unofficial clients before.
How the stars came in, step by step
| Date | What happened | Daily new stars |
|---|---|---|
| 10-15 | Repo created | — |
| 10-16 to 10-23 | Unknown | 0 to 1 a day |

| 11-06 | Repo, account and website all 404; awesome-mac removed the entry | — |
(Daily new stars come from Trendshift, UTC dates; cumulative 926 stars and 59 forks come from 11-06 GitHub snapshots)
Three steps, each tied to a Chinese-language node. No English community was involved: nothing on HN, Reddit or Product Hunt. Notably, two of the three nodes were won by the author himself: he submitted to Ruan Yifeng's newsletter through its issue tracker, and he opened the awesome-mac inclusion PR.
The stars are real: forks are 6.4% of stars, there are 23 open issues, outside developers' PRs got merged, and the comments include "crashes on macOS 27.2 right after install" as well as "used it for two days and uninstalled, just asking Siri is easier."
One person plus AI, 162 PRs merged in 22 days
The author's GitHub bio reads: "Digital media technology background · self-taught Vibe Coder | Sspai author (23.7w+ reads) | Xiaohongshu @赛博一只羊." The repo contains an AI agent decision log. Trendshift counts 162 PRs merged in 22 days, with essentially one contributor: him.
The speed meant it was already polished by the time bigger accounts noticed it: in the first week the minimum macOS version dropped from 26 to 14, a Windows version shipped too, and it had a bilingual README, a website, Homebrew install and a changelog. When big accounts reposted it, readers could click through and install right away.
Who's nearby
| Project | Scale | Compared with alternatives |
|---|---|---|
| Mijia App (Xiaomi's official app) | Hundreds of millions of users | Phone only, no desktop client. That gap is the opening. |
| XiaoMi/ha_xiaomi_home | 22.3k stars | Xiaomi's official HA integration, but you first have to deploy Home Assistant |
| Itsyhome | 1,008 stars; charted on 9to5Mac and Show HN | English-market menu bar smart home apps only support HomeKit and HA, with no direct Mijia connection |
| huanyuejue/MiHome-Windows | 703 star(11-06) | A Python Windows windowed app with no menu bar, no voice control, no keyboard blind search |
| Do1e/mijia-api, Yonsm/MiService | 968 / 866 star | Libraries and CLIs for developers, not finished products |
| iPocket-APP/MijiaLAN | 82 star(11-06) | Created 11-02, right when the original was gaining the most momentum; it connects over the LAN and keeps no cloud session, can bridge into Apple Home, and is signed and notarized |
The category "control your smart home from the Mac menu bar" already existed, with HomeKit-based and HA-based apps. But a desktop app that connects directly to Mijia accounts and works out of the box for ordinary users was mostly empty before MenuBarMijia, and it became empty again after MenuBarMijia vanished. Only MijiaLAN, a 82-star small project, has picked up the slack.
Why it disappeared is still unknown
Nov 6, github.com/jryang1997, this repo, and the website jryang1997.github.io all return 404 (as of this writing, the recheck still shows 404). The author's issues and PRs on other people's repos (the Weekly submission issue, the awesome-mac PR) were also 404. Early that same morning, awesome-mac committed "Remove MenuBarMijia."
It could be the author deleting the account, GitHub suspending or flagging it as spam, or pressure from Xiaomi. His traces in other people's repos vanished too, which points more toward a GitHub suspension or spam flag (if he deleted the account himself, the issues he left would usually be reassigned to @ghost)inferred. A DMCA takedown usually shows 451 and a notice page, which is not what we see.
This matters for anyone thinking of following: if Xiaomi took action, the next person building the same thing will hit the same wall; if it was GitHub moderation, a more robust distribution route can get around it.
Why it took off
- A gap you can state in one sentence: "Mijia has no desktop version. Scan a QR code and it works, no Home Assistant setup needed." Nearly every repost repeats this line.
- Details that screenshot well: pinyin blind search, hold-to-talk, lock-screen light off, 9 skins. One panel screenshot with the caption "I'm mid-task and want to turn off the light but have to reach for my phone" is a tweet on its own.
- The author distributes it himself: he pitched the newsletter directly, opened the awesome-mac PR, and built a clean website with a one-line install command, so readers from every big account could click and install immediately.
- The Chinese productivity repost chain: Junior Diaotiao → Ruan Yifeng's newsletter, GitHubDaily → geekbb → ahhhhfs → aggregators and blogs. Each link added a step.
If it were you
判断:A。
Who it's for: developers who can write Swift or Tauri and already have a house full of Mijia devices. Ideally you have some reach on Sspai, Jike, Xiaohongshu or X.
Who it's not for: anyone worried about their GitHub account getting flagged (private APIs plus a just-removed predecessor make the risk real), and anyone who only wants to build for an English audience, since this gap is in the Chinese community.
How to do it (pick one):
- Build a safer successor: default to direct LAN control (miIO / MIoT), make cloud login optional, keep credentials on the local machine, and state that on the first screen of the README to answer the "will I get banned?" question head-on. MijiaLAN is already on this path but is still rough. It lacks the menu bar interaction, pinyin blind search and hold-to-talk that made the original stand out.
- Fill the side the original neglected: the Windows tray version was an afterthought, and MiHome-Windows with 703 stars shows Windows users are looking too. Build a Windows version whose experience truly matches the original.
- Switch ecosystems: apply the same playbook to Tuya, Midea's Midea Home, Huawei Smart Life and Aqara. None of them has a decent desktop client either.
How to get users: follow the original's path, but tighter. Get the website, the one-line Homebrew install and the bilingual README in place first. In the launch week, submit to Ruan Yifeng's newsletter (it goes out on Fridays; submit via the GitHub issue tracker) and open a PR to awesome-mac. Write posts as one sentence plus one panel screenshot: "Mijia has no desktop version. Scan a QR code and it works." Tag productivity-circle accounts like @Junior Diaotiao and @geekbb. You can also say outright "MenuBarMijia is gone, this is the replacement," since everyone searching for it now will land on you.
When to move: as early as possible, ideally within November. The gap left by the original and its search traffic only last a few weeks, and MijiaLAN adds features every day.
Signs you've misread the situation: ① it turns out the original vanished because of Xiaomi legal action or account bans, or Xiaomi starts mass-banning accounts that use unofficial clients; ② Xiaomi releases an official Mac or Windows Mijia app; ③ MijiaLAN or another successor passes 1,000 stars in a month, so the spot is already taken; ④ two weeks after your release, with the newsletter and awesome-mac done, you're still under 200 stars, which would mean the original's buzz came mostly from novelty rather than sustained demand.

MenuBarMijia (jryang1997/MenuBarMijia) Research Report
Research date 2026-11-06. Channel: GitHub. The most important finding first: as of 2026-11-06 14:39 UTC, this repo, the author's account jryang1997, and the website jryang1997.github.io/menubarmijia-web/ are all 404. The author's issues and PRs on other people's repos (the Ruan Yifeng weekly submission issue #12858, awesome-mac PR #3813) have also 404. The awesome-mac maintainer 小弟调调 committed "Remove MenuBarMijia" at 2026-11-06 02:48 UTC. The Trendshift page shows "can no longer sync data for this repository." So this project's growth curve stopped at 11-05 (the 11-06 snapshot in our database, with 926 stars, was probably taken before it disappeared).
1. What it is
A macOS native menu bar app (Swift 6 + SwiftUI) plus a Windows 11 tray app (Tauri v2) for controlling Xiaomi Mijia smart home devices. Main selling points:
- Scan a QR code with the Mijia phone app and connect straight to Xiaomi Cloud, no need to set up Home Assistant first. Users who already run HA can connect too (macOS). Underneath it uses Xiaomi's undocumented private
api.io.mi.comAPI (RC4 signing), with credentials stored in the Keychain. The README itself notes Xiaomi has banned accounts for using unofficial clients before. - Keyboard-first interaction: ⌥M opens the panel, blind search by pinyin initials (type
sftdto find "书房台灯", the study desk lamp), Enter toggles, arrow keys adjust brightness and color temperature. - Hold the menu bar icon to speak, release to execute, no wake word. Clear commands are parsed locally (Chinese and English: on/off, brightness, temperature, timers, undo). Only ambiguous commands go to a cloud model (OpenRouter by default; a Jev decision model is also integrated).
- One-click undo for multi-device changes, auto lights-off on screen lock, 9 skins, Homebrew Cask install.

Author "一群小羊说": the GitHub bio reads "Digital media technology background · non-traditional Vibe Coder | Sspai author (23.7w+ reads) | Xiaohongshu @赛博一只羊". The Sspai profile shows 14 articles, 236k+ reads, 47 followers (sspai.com/u/dub8fbmk). The repo contains decisions.tsv, an AI agent decision log. Trendshift counts 162 merged PRs in 22 days from only 1 contributors (an outside contributor, @almightyYantao, also had a PR merged). This was one person iterating very fast with AI coding help.
2. Growth curve and what drove each step
Daily star counts (our GitHub repo_day, plus Trendshift's daily data):
| Date | Cumulative stars (this database) | Trendshift new stars that day | What happened that day or the day before |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10-15 | 0 | — | Repo created |
| 10-16~10-23 | — | 0~1/day | Unknown |
| 10-24 | — | +21 | 小弟调调 @jaywcjlove tweets: "MenuBarMijia - a menu bar app for controlling Xiaomi devices by voice or keyboard" (10-24 12:16 UTC, 81 likes). He is also an awesome-mac maintainer, and the project was then added to awesome-mac (PR #3813, now 404). |
| 10-25 | 21 | +52 | The tweet kept spreading. The same day it reached #7 on Trendshift's Swift chart. |
| 10-26~10-29 | 75→97 | 3~9/day | Plateau. The author was merging about ten PRs a day. |
| 10-30 | 100 | +107 | Ruan Yifeng's 《科技爱好者周刊》 issue 417 (published Fridays) included it as item 9, credited "submitted by @jryang1997" (ruanyf/weekly docs/issue-417.md). The same day at 10:00 UTC, @GitHub_Daily posted a long tweet (27 likes, views unknown). |
| 10-31 | 206 | +21 | Retweeted by @weiwei2018831 (277 views, very small impact). |
| 11-01 | 228 | +243 | @geekbb tweets: "This project is great... no need to pull out your phone or set up Home Assistant first" (51.2K views, 406 likes, 59 reposts). @abskoop (ahhhhfs) reposted it. |
| 11-02 | 449 | +273 | Aftershocks. #1 on Trendshift's Swift chart. #118 on Daily Launch. The author submitted a PR to awesome-mac to change the minimum macOS requirement. |
| 11-03 | 744 | +101 | Bytenote (字节笔记本) published an article. Various GitHub aggregator sites (repoinsider, repolode, reporank, opensourcedex, and others) picked it up automatically. |
| 11-04 | 844 | +59 | v1.1.6 released |
| 11-05 | 902 | +23 | Cooling off. |
| 11-06 | 926 | +0 | Repo and account 404, and the entry was removed from awesome-mac. |
Note: our snapshots are timestamped in Beijing time, which is roughly one day off from Trendshift's UTC dates. So this database's peak (11-03 +295) corresponds to Trendshift's 11-01/11-02.
Conclusion: nearly all the growth came from three nodes in the Chinese developer / productivity-tool circle: 小弟调调 (which got it into awesome-mac), the Ruan Yifeng weekly (submitted by the author), and the @geekbb tweet with 50K views. The biggest wave came from geekbb. I found no English-community spread (HN, Reddit, Product Hunt), and our x-radar corpus has nothing either (the corpus doesn't cover those accounts).
No sign of star farming: the fork-to-star ratio is about 6.4% (59/926). There are 23 open issues and external PRs, and real users are commenting. Under the GitHub_Daily tweet someone wrote "crashed on launch on macOS 27.2, switched to another project", and under the geekbb tweet someone wrote "used it for two days and uninstalled, just saying 'hey Siri' is easier".
III. Competitors
| Product | Where | Launched | Scale | How it differs from MenuBarMijia |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mijia App (Xiaomi's official app) | Big-company features (iOS/Android) | Early on | Hundreds of millions of users | Xiaomi has no official macOS or Windows desktop client, and that is the gap MenuBarMijia fills. |
| XiaoMi/ha_xiaomi_home (Xiaomi's official HA integration) | Open source | 2024-09 | 22.3k stars | Requires setting up Home Assistant first, a high bar. MenuBarMijia's pitch is "scan and go, no HA needed". |
| nickustinov/itsyhome-macos(Itsyhome) | Open source + Mac App Store | 2026-01 | 1,008 stars. Featured in 9to5Mac, How-To Geek, and Show HN. 13 App Store ratings. | English market. Menu bar apps built on HomeKit + HA can't connect to Mijia directly. Mijia users have to bridge their devices into HomeKit or HA first. |
| codechimp-org/ha-menu | Open source | 2018 | 501 stars | HA only |
| HomeControl Menu, Homie, HomeMenu | Mac App Store | 2020–2021 | Very few ratings | HomeKit only |
| huanyuejue/MiHome-Windows | Open source (Python) | 2026-08-27 | 696 stars, 10-26 single-day peak. A 什么值得买 article said "official Mijia has no Windows version". | Windows windowed app only, built on Do1e/mijia-api. No menu bar, voice, or keyboard blind search. |
| Do1e/mijia-api | Open source (Python library / CLI / MCP) | 2022 | 968 stars | A library for developers, not a finished product for regular users. |
| Yonsm/MiService | Open source | 2021 | 866 stars | Command-line library for Xiaomi cloud services |
| extrastu/MiBar | Open source | 2026-09 | 8 stars | Only handles one device type: the Mijia monitor light bar. |
| HZDavy/OpenMexia | Open source | 2026-10-11 | 33 stars | Cross-platform local hub, broader and heavier in scope. |
Landscape: the category "control your smart home from the Mac menu bar" already existed (HomeKit-based and HA-based tools), but finished desktop tools that connect directly to Mijia accounts were almost empty. Mijia is the largest smart home ecosystem in China by installed base, and many of its users are Mac users or Windows office workers. Until now the only route was the long chain of HA + the Mijia integration + a HomeKit bridge.
4. Copycats
- iPocket-APP/MijiaLAN: created at 2026-11-02 14:23 UTC, right in the two days MenuBarMijia grew fastest. Its description: "macOS menu bar app for LAN control of Mijia devices with Apple Home bridging". As of 11-06 it has 82 stars. It takes a different approach: direct LAN control over miIO/MIoT with no persistent cloud session, then bridging devices into Apple Home. It is also Developer ID signed and notarized. Once the original disappeared, it became the most direct successor. The iPocket account was registered 2026-02, has 6 repos, and ipocket.xyz makes lightweight Mac/iOS utilities.
- Itsyhome also had a single-day peak around 11-03 (this database's max_day_date = 11-03). This may be people searching for "Mac menu bar smart home" and stumbling onto it (a guess).
5. Why it works
- It filled a clear gap: Xiaomi has no official desktop app, and Mijia users don't want to set up HA. The top-liked reply under geekbb's tweet was "the best part is you don't have to set up Home Assistant first, so many people's smart home gets stuck at that step." The "scan and go" line is the core selling point, and several reposts repeat it.
- It hit the taste of the Chinese productivity-tool crowd: pinyin-initial blind search, no input-method switching, hold-to-talk, one-click undo, lights-off on lock, 9 skins. It's very screenshot-friendly and tweet-friendly. GitHub_Daily and geekbb both used the scenario "halfway through work and want to turn off the lights, but you have to grab your phone."
- The author did their own distribution: the author is also a Sspai writer and a Xiaohongshu blogger. They submitted to the Ruan Yifeng weekly on their own, got into awesome-mac, and built a bilingual README, a website, Homebrew Cask, a star-history chart, and a changelog. With all that in place, when a big account reposted it, the link led straight to a working install.
- Chained retweets from Chinese KOLs: 小弟调调 → Ruan Yifeng weekly + GitHubDaily → geekbb (50K views) → ahhhhfs → aggregator sites and blogs. Each node was one step up.
- Iteration speed from AI coding: 22 merged PRs in 162 days, v1.1.6. In the first week the minimum macOS version went from 26 down to 14, and a Windows version shipped alongside. By the time big accounts noticed it, the feature set was already complete.
VI. Differentiation
Compared with HomeKit/HA-based menu bar tools (Itsyhome, ha-menu, HomeControl Menu), the difference is that it connects directly to the Mijia account with no middle layer. Compared with MiHome-Windows and mijia-api, it is a finished product with native menu bar, keyboard, and voice, on both Mac and Windows. This difference really is the main reason it took off: every retweet's core line was "no Home Assistant needed, just scan and connect".
But this differentiation rests on Xiaomi's private cloud API, so the moat is thin and the risk is high: MijiaLAN shipped a similar product within a week, and when the author's account 11-06 vanished entirely, the project stopped dead.
7. Visibility
It spread within small circles. Chinese developer and Mac productivity accounts wrote about it (geekbb 50K views, the Ruan Yifeng weekly, GitHubDaily, 小弟调调). The English community didn't pick it up. No media coverage, and no revenue involved (free and open source). The project is now offline and awesome-mac has removed the entry. The gap it left is being contested by just one small account, MijiaLAN.
VIII. What to take from it
- "Big-platform ecosystem has no desktop client for X" is a topic you can keep reusing. Mijia has no Mac or Windows version. Similar gaps exist for Tuya, Midea, Huawei's Smart Life, and other IoT ecosystems' desktop or menu bar versions.
- Lowering the barrier with "no need to set up X first" makes it a line that can be passed along in one sentence.
- The cold-start path for a Chinese open-source project: get into awesome-mac via 小弟调调 → submit to the Ruan Yifeng weekly (published Fridays) → wait for accounts like GitHubDaily and geekbb to repost naturally. The timing can be planned tightly.
- Lesson: for projects that depend on private APIs, think through account and platform risk in advance (keep mirrors on other platforms, distribute signed builds).
9. What I'm still unsure about
- 仓库和账号为什么消失:作者自删账号、GitHub 封号 / 标记 spam、还是小米法务施压?作者在别人仓库的 issue/PR 也一起 404,这更像 GitHub 把账号封了或标成 spam(自己删号的话,留下的 issue 一般会挂到 @ghost 名下,不会 404),但没有直接证据。DMCA 下架通常显示 451 和通知页,和现在看到的不一样。
- Neither the views on GitHubDaily's post nor whether @赛博一只羊 on Xiaohongshu ever posted promotional content has been verified (TikHub only checked the TikTok channel, not Xiaohongshu).
- Real install numbers are unknown (we couldn't get Homebrew Cask or release download counts).
- The author's other repo jryang1997/omp-bot (indexed by Trendshift) also vanished with the account. Details are unclear.
