# A contest with prizes plus the pitch "a free local Lovart" got ComfyArt 460 stars in 24 days: ComfyArt

**What it is** A free plugin that runs inside ComfyUI: an infinite design canvas like Lovart, plus an AI assistant that edits images for you. Image, video, audio and 3D generation all run on your own GPU.

**Why it took off** It landed during Comfy's official prize challenge, and "a local free Lovart" is understood in one sentence, so the Chinese community spread it first. When Higgsfield's legal letter turned the contest into a controversy, the author posted a long piece on Reddit, which brought in another wave.

**C** **How you could follow** Don't build another open-source Lovart. Copy the playbook: pick a hot closed-source AI product that has no local open-source version yet, build it as a ComfyUI plugin, and launch it tied to a platform contest or a trending moment.

Grade C: the slot is already taken by this project and several canvases from the same contest, and its own star ceiling is only a few hundred. The growth came from a contest that has already ended, and the author being a Comfy company insider is something a follower can't replicate. What people in the niche are saying

In Oct 2026-15, Comfy, the company behind ComfyUI, ran a two-week bounty challenge called "Open Source Higgsfield" with a $25,000 prize pool. The same day, a familiar face in the ComfyUI community started coding. Three weeks later he shipped ComfyArt: an infinite canvas built into ComfyUI, plus a design agent that can edit the canvas itself, aimed at Lovart. Below: where its stars came from, what you can copy, and what you can't.

### One contest, and a person who was already in the room

The challenge opened on 10-15, with a prize category called "Open Weights Only" that offered an RTX 5090 (from the comfy.org contest page). ComfyArt's first commit is from 10-15, and the first thing on its README reads "No account, no credits, no cloud." Every generation uses open-weight models, which fits that prize exactly.

The author, Terry Jia (jtydhr88 on GitHub), is not new. His GitHub account has 9,443 stars in total. He previously built a string of ComfyUI plugins, including ComfyTV (1,170 stars) and qwenmultiangle (1,458 stars). He has 454 commits under the Comfy-Org organization, and his recent commits reference internal ticket numbers. His X account carries a ComfyUI affiliation badge (GitHub, X, 11-06). It's safe to infer he works at Comfy: the official company is building a showcase for its own contest.

### What it actually is

A ComfyUI custom node. `git clone` it into the `custom_nodes/` directory, restart ComfyUI, and a ComfyArt button appears in the top bar. Click it and you get a Lovart-style design workspace:

- An infinite canvas (built on tldraw) with artboards, layers, a pen tool, and rich text, exporting PNG, PDF, and editable PPTX;

- Generate images, edit, remove backgrounds, outpaint, change angles, make videos, add music and voiceovers, turn images into 3D: every one of these actions is backed by a standard ComfyUI workflow running on your own GPU;

- A tool-using agent that can be driven by Claude Code, Codex, Qwen Code, or a local LLM. It also exposes an MCP interface so other agents can operate the canvas;

- No GPU? Enter a Comfy Cloud key and run in the cloud (this requires a paid Comfy plan).

MIT license, free. The built frontend `dist/` is committed to the repo, so there's no build step at install time.

### Where the stars came from

The daily star curve has two clear spikes, matching two exposure waves (GitHub daily data, 10-17 to 11-06):

| Date | What happened | star |
|---|---|---|
| 10-16 | The author launched on X. The Chinese account sundyme translated it the same day: "A fully local, open-source version built to match Lovart." | 10-17 cumulative 21 |
| 10-19 | The author's official contest post, tagged #OpenSourceHiggsfield and @ComfyUI: 17.4k views, 156 likes (X) | 10-18 to 10-20: up 120 |
| 10-27 | The ComfyUI community news site comfyui-wiki ran a feature on it | 10-28 +47 |
| 10-29~30 | Higgsfield sent Comfy a legal letter demanding the contest be pulled. r/StableDiffusion and r/comfyui blew up. On 10-30 the author posted a long piece on r/comfyui: "a free, local Lovart for ComfyUI" | 10-31 +76, the single-day high |
| November | Tutorial sites freakyjolly and runcomfy followed up | About +10 per day |

As of 11-06 it has 463 stars and 82 forks (GitHub, 11-06). The fork-to-star ratio is close to 18%, high for an open-source project, which suggests plenty of people actually installed it.

The repo is less than 60 days old, too new for GitHub trending, so every one of these stars came from the posts and the contest. I found no coverage on HN, Product Hunt, or major media.

Two things helped a lot. First, "a local free Lovart" is instantly understood, and Lovart is popular with Chinese users, so the Chinese community spread it first. Second, the legal letter turned an ordinary community contest into an "open source vs. closed source" story, and the author's long Reddit post landed right in that wave of attention.

### Who it's competing with

The "open-source Lovart" space is already crowded. GitHub even has a lovart-alternative topic tag:

| Project | Launched | Scale (GitHub, 11-06) | How ComfyArt differs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lovart | 2025 | Claims 10M+ creators | The closed-source, credit-based, cloud-run product it's modeled on |
| nexu-io/open-design | 2026-04 | 106,095 star | A general-purpose open-source design agent, two orders of magnitude bigger, not tied to ComfyUI |
| 11cafe/jaaz | 2025-06 | 6,731 stars, gaining only 5 in the last ~7 days | An earlier "open-source Lovart" as a standalone app, no longer growing much |
| langchain-ai/design-agent | 2026-10 | 567 star | Official from LangChain, with no canvas and no local generation |
| jtydhr88/ComfyTV | 2026-06 | 1,170 star | Same author, same approach, targeting a video canvas. ComfyArt's agent backend is ported from it |
| D3voz/openjutsu | 2026-10-26 | 1,729 stars, +1,433 in the last 7 days | A contest entry started 13 days later, with about 4 times ComfyArt's star count |
| openfield, open-source-canvas, ComfyUI-Local-Infinite-Canvas | 2026-10 | 130~170 star | Local ComfyUI canvases that surfaced in the same contest wave |

openjutsu is the one to watch. It rebuilds the Higgsfield features the contest explicitly named, while ComfyArt rebuilds Lovart, which is not in the brief. In the same contest, the project that matched the official brief got more stars.

ComfyArt's real edge is just one thing: it lives inside the ComfyUI you already have installed. No separate app, no cloud API, and the GPU and models you already own work right away. That lets it spread within the ComfyUI community. How far it goes depends on the contest and the author's reputation.

### What you can copy and what you can't

What you can't copy: the author's identity and reputation. He's from Comfy's team, so the company's accounts and community will naturally amplify an entry to its own contest. He also already has ComfyTV's agent backend, which is why one person could build a canvas, video, audio, 3D, and PPTX export in three weeks and have it look like a finished product, not a demo. Nobody following him has either advantage.

What you can copy:

- **Watch official platform contests.** Start the day they open, write the pitch to match a specific prize, and post with the contest tag and @ the official account.

- **A "open-source / local version of a hit closed-source product" pitch.** It has to be clear in one sentence, and it should work in both Chinese and English.

- **Live inside a host people already have.** Build it as a ComfyUI custom node to skip distribution and environment setup, and commit the built files to the repo to lower the barrier further.

- **One codebase, reskinned again and again** . The author is the one who did ComfyTV (a rebrand of TapNow) and ComfyArt (a rebrand of Lovart), reusing the same backend.

### If it were you

**Verdict** : C. You can learn from it, but copying it isn't worth much. The slot "local Lovart inside ComfyUI" is already taken; there are three or four similar canvases in the same contest; it has only 460 stars after 24 days, so the ceiling is low; and the contest that drove its traffic closed on 11-03, and you can't copy the author's reputation.

**Who it suits** : developers who already build plugins in the ComfyUI community and have a bit of an audience; people who can do frontend and can port the main flows of a closed-source AI product into ComfyUI on their own.

**Who it doesn't suit** : anyone who wants to build yet another "open-source Lovart" (this path already has open-design with 100K+ stars and a pile of small projects); anyone without a posting channel who is counting on organic GitHub traffic.

**How to do it** , from most to least promising:

1. **Copy its playbook with a different target** : find a closed-source AI product that's hot right now and has no open local version yet (video, dubbing, digital humans, e-commerce images, etc.), and build it as a ComfyUI custom node, named something like "Free Local XX".

2. **Get into a platform contest** : Comfy, Hugging Face and the model companies all run prize events. Start building the day it opens and aim at the topic the official side names. openjutsu shows that hitting the right topic beats building more.

3. **Fill the gaps ComfyArt left** : for example, write more design skills and templates for its agent, and submit them as PRs to build reputation. That's cheaper than starting another canvas.

**How to get users** : put the one-line "X, but open and local" pitch in the title and the first screen; make a 30–40 second demo video; post on X first and tag the platform's official account, then write a long post on r/comfyui explaining the install; publish a Chinese version at the same time, since Lovart and Jimeng have many Chinese-speaking users.

**Timing** : this contest wave is already over; the next chance is the next platform event, or the first two or three weeks after the next closed-source AI product blows up.

**What would prove this read wrong** : (1) 11-06 announced the winners, and ComfyArt made the list. After it landed on comfy.org/hub, stars surged again, which means this spot has a higher ceiling than estimated here. (2) A month out, if it's still adding double-digit stars a day, there's steady demand for "a design workspace inside ComfyUI," and a differentiated version is worth building. (3) The reverse: if the author's next reskinned project only gets a few hundred stars, this recipe has already been pushed as far as it goes in the ComfyUI crowd.

| nexu-io/open-design | Open source | 2026-04 | 106,095 star | A general-purpose open-source design agent two orders of magnitude bigger; not tied to ComfyUI, and has none of the local generation stack. |
| 11cafe/jaaz | Open source | 2025-06 | 6,731 stars, +5 in the last 7 days | An earlier "open-source Lovart" that is a standalone app and can connect to ComfyUI / Ollama; growth has largely stalled now. |

### One line

ComfyArt is an open-source, local take on Lovart that installs as a custom node inside ComfyUI: an infinite canvas built on tldraw, plus a design agent that works on the canvas with tools. Images, video, audio and 3D all run on your own ComfyUI (you can also switch to the paid Comfy Cloud). It is getting stars because of **Comfy's official "Open Source Higgsfield" bounty challenge (10-15 to 11-03, $25,000 prize)** , plus the author's long-standing reputation in the ComfyUI community (the author looks like a frontend engineer at Comfy Org). The product itself is another build of the same recipe, and there isn't much here that only it can do.

### Key facts

- Repo created 2026-10-13; 457 stars / 81 forks in 24 days (data card 2026-11-06); GitHub API live that day: 463 / 82.

- Release rhythm: v1.0.0 10-23 → v1.1.0 10-27 → v1.2.0 10-31 → v1.2.1 11-05 (GitHub releases). All 68 commits on the first page were written by the author Terry Jia alone.

- Daily stars (data card daily): 10-17 21 → 10-18 60 → 10-19 127 → 10-20 180 → 10-21 210, then gaining 10–15 a day; 10-28 +47; 10-31 +76 (single-day high); from 11-01 onward roughly +10 a day. Last 7 days +133, first 7 days +86.

- It never reached 60 days, so it was not eligible for trending (data card trending_days_any=0); its stars did not come from trending.

Two peaks: one from the X launch plus reposts in the Chinese-speaking community (10-18~20), and one when the contest controversy broke and the author posted the long Reddit post (10-30~31). Found no coverage on HN, Product Hunt, major YouTube channels or mainstream media.

### Competitors

| Name | Where | Launched | Scale | How ComfyArt differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lovart | Web SaaS | 2025 | Self-described as serving "10M+ creators" ([lovart.ai](https://www.lovart.ai/blog/ai-art-copyright-2026)). | The prototype it copied; closed-source, credit-based, runs in the cloud. |
| nexu-io/open-design | Open source | 2026-04 | 106,095 stars, last 7 days +1,243 (github table) | A general-purpose open-source design agent two orders of magnitude bigger; not tied to ComfyUI. ComfyArt's difference is that it installs into ComfyUI and the models all run locally. |
| 11cafe/jaaz | Open source | 2025-06 | 6,731 stars (github library) | An "open-source Lovart" from a year earlier that can connect to ComfyUI and Ollama but is a standalone app; it now gains only 5 stars a week and has gone quiet. |
| Anil-matcha/Open-AI-Design-Agent | Open source | Repo created 2023; later changed to this direction. | 477 star | Relies on lovart-alternative-style SEO keywords and runs on cloud APIs. |
| langchain-ai/design-agent | Open source (big vendor) | 2026-10-18 | 567 stars, +111 in the last 7 days | A design agent from LangChain's official team; no generation stack bundled with a canvas and not tied to local models. |
| superdesign / gpt-image-canvas | Open source | 2025-06 / 2026-04 | 7,586 / 739 star | The former leans toward UI design; the latter also uses tldraw but goes through GPT Image. |
| jtydhr88/ComfyTV | Open source (by the author). | 2026-06 | 1,170 star | Same author, same "canvas app inside ComfyUI" formula, copying TapNow / LibTV; ComfyArt's agent backend was ported from it (in the author's own Threads words). |
| Entries from the same challenge: D3voz/openjutsu, wexloops/openfield, raph651/open-source-canvas, 1314521gjy/ComfyUI-Local-Infinite-Canvas, Comfy-Org/comfy-openjutsu. | Open source | 2026-10 | 1,729 (last 7 days +1,433) / 172 / 138 / 168 / 136 stars (github repo data). | Entries from the same wave. openjutsu was created 13 days after ComfyArt and has nearly 4 times its stars, because it does the topic Comfy's official side named (Genjutsu character swap). ComfyArt copies Lovart, which isn't in Higgsfield's brief. |
| Built-in features from big vendors | Other | — | — | Canva and Adobe Firefly Boards both have AI canvases, but both run in the cloud and require subscriptions. |

The open-source space is already crowded (GitHub has a lovart-alternative topic tag). ComfyArt's position is "the most complete design canvas **within the ComfyUI ecosystem** ", not "the first open-source Lovart".

### Growth channels

1. **Platform-run event (confirmed)** : Comfy's official challenge gave a deadline and prize money, and the official account and community helped spread it. The author's entry was tagged with the event and @ComfyUI. The product pitch "Open-weights models only" lines up with the "Open Weights Only" prize category 5090.

2. **Author's track record and identity (confirmed / highly credible)** : Terry Jia already has 9,443 stars on GitHub, and has shipped a string of ComfyUI plugins including ComfyTV (1,170 stars) and qwenmultiangle (1,458 stars). He has 454 commits under the Comfy-Org organization, and his recent ones reference internal ticket numbers (e.g. "FE-1197"). His X account carries a ComfyUI-linked badge, so it's basically safe to conclude he works at Comfy Org. In effect, an insider is leading by example with an official-event entry.

3. **Chinese-language amplification (confirmed)** : sundyme introduced it in Chinese, thor3323 reposted it on Threads, and Chinese users also reshared it on LinkedIn. That fits with Lovart being popular among Chinese users.

4. **Long post on Reddit r/comfyui (the post exists; engagement numbers unavailable, Reddit returned 403)** .

5. **Community news and tutorial sites (confirmed)** : long-tail sites like the comfyui-wiki feature, artrealmai, freakyjolly, and runcomfy.

6. **Comfy Cloud funnel (inferred)** : the README says that if you don't have a GPU, set COMFY_API_KEY to use Comfy Cloud (paid plans required). That's a paid-conversion entry point for Comfy the company, though the author himself earns nothing from it.

### Why it's working

- Rode a platform event: two days after the repo was created, Comfy's challenge opened, and the two star spikes lined up with the launch and the challenge, amplified further by the controversy (a lawyer's letter + the Reddit post).

- Easy to grasp by name: "a free local version of Lovart" explains itself in one line, and that comparison especially lands with Chinese-speaking audiences.

- The author had ready-made credibility and code: ComfyTV's agent backend was reused directly, so one person in three weeks shipped a large stack of features (canvas, vector, video, audio, 3D, Edit Elements, PPTX export). It looks like a usable product, not a demo.

- Low barrier to entry: dist/ is committed directly to the repo with no build step; you just clone it into custom_nodes and it runs. It also has a bilingual Chinese/English docs site and a 38-second promo video. Forks/stars reached 18%, showing plenty of people actually installed it.

### Differentiation

Functionally, there's nothing new; the canvas copies Lovart. Its difference is **where it runs** : no separate app to install, no cloud API to connect. It's just a page inside the ComfyUI you already have installed, and every action is a standard ComfyUI workflow that can be run on another machine on the LAN or on Comfy Cloud. The agent can be driven by Claude Code, Codex, or a local LLM, and it exposes an MCP interface. That's genuinely useful to longtime ComfyUI users (who already have GPUs and models), and it's why the Comfy community spread it. But the star count mostly comes from the event plus the author's reputation: in the same contest, openjutsu hit an official theme and got 1,700 stars in two weeks. So the differentiation determines which circle it spreads in, and the event determines how far it goes.

### How many people can see it

It's spreading in small circles: ComfyUI community news sites, r/comfyui, and Chinese-language reposts on X and Threads. No mainstream media, HN, or PH coverage. Open-source projects have no public revenue. I haven't seen an identical copycat yet, but similar "local infinite canvas for ComfyUI" projects have already popped up (ComfyUI-Local-Infinite-Canvas, open-source-canvas, openfield).

### What to borrow

- **Watch the platform's official prize events** : start the day the challenge opens, write the pitch to match a specific prize, and capture official traffic by tagging and @-ing the official accounts.

- **The "open-source / local version + famous closed-source product name" framing** : one line that explains it, and it spreads in both English and Chinese.

- **Piggyback on a host people already have installed** (ComfyUI's custom_nodes), skipping distribution and environment setup. Committing the built dist directly into the repo also lowers the install barrier.

- **Repeatedly ship one base under a new shell** : ComfyTV → ComfyArt, same backend, each time benchmarked against a popular SaaS.

### Still unclear

- Whether the author is an official Comfy Org employee (strong evidence, but no official confirmation), and whether employees are eligible for the prize.

- Whether ComfyArt appears on the winners list announced by 11-06; if it wins, a listing on comfy.org/hub could bring another wave.
