CapCut raised prices, and a self-taught developer wrote a free alternative in three weeks; 73 days later it has 14k stars

What it is A free, open-source desktop video editor that installs on Windows, Mac, Linux, and Android. CapCut's paid features (subtitles, voiceover, chroma keying, 4K export) are all free here, and it runs on your own computer.

Why it took off CapCut raised prices and locked features this year, and the old open-source flagship OpenCut is being rewritten and has stalled. It first picked up stars from programmers thanks to the story "Claude wrote a CapCut alternative in three weeks". In mid-October, creators in Vietnam, Spanish-speaking and Portuguese-speaking countries and elsewhere spontaneously made "free CapCut" videos, which pulled in ordinary people who edit videos too.

BHow you could follow Stop building yet another CapCut alternative. Watch for the next big-vendor software that raises prices or locks features, and within weeks ship a free local version that you can download directly, with a feature list that maps to its paid tiers. Start by talking about "I wrote this with AI in a few weeks" in AI communities, then prepare multilingual support and a download page so short-video creators will promote it.

Grade B: the playbook is clear and repeatable, and the author is already doing it for his next project. But the CapCut slot is already taken by this project and FilmCraft, and it has been widely covered. A follower would have to wait for another big vendor's price hike and still ship a complete, installable app. Publicly known / widely discussed

In mid-September 2026, a self-taught developer with little GitHub reputation posted on r/ClaudeAI: he had spent three weeks using Claude to build a CapCut alternative, and people had already stopped using CapCut because of it. The editor, called Concat, had 14,367 stars as of 11-06, and its installer had been downloaded about 450k times. It wasn't the first "open-source CapCut," and the earlier one already had nearly 100k stars. What it caught was CapCut's price increase and a rival going quiet at the same time. Below: how it took off, where the stars came from, and what routes are left if you want the same stars.

One post, one line: "written with Claude"

On 2026 Sep 15, a user named jub0t, Jareer A., posted on r/ClaudeAI with the title "I used Claude to write a CapCut replacement and now people are actually ditching CapCut for it". The repo was created 25 Aug, originally named WolfCut, and renamed Concat in early September.

The next day, tech news site anothernews.io published "A free CapCut replacement written with Claude passed 10,000 downloads". The author said he wrote it on a Claude Max subscription in about three weeks. At the time it had 2,300 stars, and its 25 releases had been downloaded over 10k times. He added in the post: completely free, no paid version.

On Sep 18 he also posted a Show HN, which got only 5 points and 3 comments. In the post he stated the motivation directly: "after sucking in millions of installs, CapCut put everything behind a paywall", and added: "I'm self-taught, and I relied heavily on Claude to build Concat."

He had previously built a Discord bot dashboard and a Tailwind component library, both with under 300 stars, and 694 GitHub followers (11-06). With no big-name backing, the first wave of traction came almost entirely from the story "one person wrote a video editor with AI in three weeks", and r/ClaudeAI readers are exactly the people who star open-source projects.

What it actually is

A desktop video editor written in Rust, with installers for Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android, and sideloadable on iOS. The README lists: automatic subtitles (Whisper running locally), text-to-speech and voice cloning, chroma keying, keyframes, 100 transition effects, multitrack, and export up to 4K 60. It's "no watermark, no account, no subscription, no upload". You download the AI models once in settings, and they work offline afterward. It also includes a built-in MCP server, so AI agents like Claude can call it directly to edit video.

Licensed AGPL-3.0, with a commercial closed-source license sold separately. The top of the README features a paid sponsor (a proxy service, with a discount code) and a Patreon donation link, with the text "Concat needs your donations to keep development going".

The feature list is worth a closer look: subtitles, voiceover, chroma keying, 4K, and watermark removal are nearly the exact items CapCut charges for, matched one by one.

Why now: CapCut raised prices, and the previous open-source flagship is being rewritten

CapCut is tightening. In the first half of 2026, CapCut adjusted its subscriptions, raising Pro from about $9.99/month to $19.99/month, and moved some export and AI features into the paid tier (whysogeek 08-24; CapCut help page "Why do some features require payment now"). Articles about "CapCut alternatives" have been steady all year.

The old "open-source CapCut" has stalled. OpenCut came out in June 2025 and now has 97.4k stars, but it's "being rewritten from scratch", the main repo hasn't been updated since Sep 24, and the web version is still the old one. A free CapCut you can download and use today has been an open slot.

Here's how others in the same space stack up:

"Open-source CapCut alternative" is not an empty niche. Concat caught a window: CapCut's price hike pushed people out, and OpenCut's stall left them nowhere to go.

Where the stars came from: programmers first, then ordinary video editors

The numbers show two distinct phases:

TimelinestarSources

10-177,454 (1,040 in a single day)GitHub
10-2210,396GitHub
11-0614,367GitHub

Phase one (late August to early October) was the author's own posts. 08-27 r/foss, 08-28 r/coolgithubprojects (then still called WolfCut), and 09-15 r/ClaudeAI, then moved on to r/generativeAI and r/ClaudeCode. Small French sites like jiti.me and VseZavislo followed with their own coverage. HN didn't take off.

The second wave (from mid-October) came from short-video creators in several countries posting on their own. Search "concat capcut" on TikTok and you'll find a batch of videos with a few thousand to over a hundred thousand views (11-06):

  • Vietnamese creator @100dayvibecoding posted around October 16–17 with 74k views and 1,712 saves. The opener: "🔥 A completely free CapCut alternative with no watermark and AI built in." The day it went out, Concat added 1,040 stars in a single day, the highest it has ever hit.
  • @manuel.travelling, 10-11.1M views.
  • @theaiimpact (53k followers), 10-2.02M views. Caption: "FREE CapCut Alternative with AI Features! No subscription, no watermark, no account." A row of checkmarks lists the features below it.
  • Spanish-language @lluisjimenez.ugc took a different angle: "What makes it better than CapCut for me isn't the price, it's that my videos never leave my house." The video also quotes CapCut's terms of service from Apr 15.
  • There are also Portuguese "CapCut de Graça?" (free CapCut?) videos, Turkish and Arabic (Algeria) ones, and Indonesian ones, plus a lot of "FREE CapCut alternative" reposts across Instagram and Facebook groups.

None of these videos are labeled as paid partnerships, and I can't confirm whether anyone reached out to the creators. You can still see why they wanted to post: "Free CapCut" works as a video title on its own, and the feature list reads straight off as the caption. The README has been translated into 26 languages and the app itself supports 26, and the website has one big download button above the fold. That's why creators in Vietnam, Spanish-speaking countries, and Portuguese-speaking countries could post it and have viewers actually be able to use it once they clicked.

The installer download numbers show who came in this wave: v0.2.5 (09-28) 46k downloads, v0.2.7 (10-13) 133k downloads, v0.2.8 (10-20) 214k downloads (GitHub, 11-06). The people arriving are no longer just programmers reading code. They're people downloading the installer and cutting videos.

Later, Neowin, TechPP (11-05), and LockerGnome (which covered the MCP angle of "let Claude edit your footage") also reported on it. Growth is slowing now: 7 days ago it was 1,760, the 7 days before that 2,211, but it still adds around 200 a day.

Where it falls short

Sorting GitHub issues by comment count (11-06, with over ten pages of opened issues), the hottest ones are:

  • Graphics cards and old computers: NVIDIA cards with 8 GB of VRAM drop the device mid-export or freeze outright; old CPUs like the i7-2600 crash on launch; v0.2.5 has a "serious performance problem."
  • The Android version is rough: media won't import, export is missing encoders, it won't open, and the UI has problems.
  • No web version: someone asked for a WebAssembly build.
  • Linux packaging: people are asking for Flatpak / Flathub.

It also lacks the thing phone-based short-video editing relies on most: template and asset libraries like CapCut's. The author said on HN he wants to build a decentralized marketplace for filters, effects, and templates, but it hasn't taken shape yet.

If it were you

Verdict: B. Worth a try, but don't build a second Concat. It proves a playbook: when a big company raises prices or locks features in its software, ship a "free, local, no account" alternative. List it against the incumbent's paid features, and one person with AI can have a usable version in a few weeks. Talk about it in AI circles first ("I wrote X in a few weeks with AI"), then get short-video creators to push "free X." The weak point is that the CapCut slot is already taken. FilmCraft and other projects from the same period have caught up, and OpenCut is coming back after its rewrite. The next opening will need another big company to raise prices.

Who it fits: people who can use AI to quickly write a complete desktop app and are willing to fix bugs and ship releases every day (Concat has shipped dozens of versions in just over two months), and people who watch software news and can move the week a major company announces a price increase.

Who it doesn't fit: anyone who wants to build another CapCut-themed tool (you'd be the fifth, with no story); anyone who can only make a demo and not an installer people can install and use (creators are pushing "download and go," and if it won't install, the second wave never happens); anyone who only publishes on GitHub without planning multilingual support and a download page (the second half of Concat's stars came from ordinary non-English users).

How to do it, ranked by how worthwhile:

  1. Pick another software product whose price is going up: the author is already doing this, having released MageCAD ("open-source Autodesk Fusion alternative") and a hand-drawn explainer animation editor. Look for software that ordinary people use, that has recently raised prices or locked features, and that has no ready-to-download open-source option yet. Design, screen recording, subtitles, photo editing, PDF, and note-taking can each be checked one by one.
  2. Cover what Concat left out: build the template, effects, and sound-asset library it lacks (someone has already asked for a sound library in the issues), or build a genuinely good phone editor, since Android is clearly where it's falling short. Submitting PRs to Concat also builds reputation.
  3. Just the agent half: tools that let Claude and Codex edit video themselves (a Vietnamese creator already filmed "Codex using Concat's MCP to find images on the web and edit a video on its own"). Projects on this line still only have a few hundred to a few thousand stars, but ordinary users won't come for it, so the ceiling is lower than for an editor built for people.

How to get users: for the first wave, post "a free alternative to X, built with AI in Y weeks" in AI communities like r/ClaudeAI and r/ClaudeCode. Put the big company's name in the title along with "people are actually switching." At the same time, have three things ready: a website with a big download button, installers for every platform, and a README and UI in multiple languages. Then wait, or actively reach out to TikTok and Instagram creators in different countries who do "free tool recommendation" posts, and give them a line they can use as a title: "Free X Pro." Don't count on HN. Concat only got 5 points there.

When to move: follow the big company's price increases. Concat launched about half a year after CapCut tightened its paywall, and the demand for alternatives lasted several months. When the next company announces a price increase, aim to have a downloadable version within a month.

What would mean you read it wrong: ① after November, Concat's daily new stars drop to a few dozen, and the next version's downloads are less than half of v0.2.8's, which would mean ordinary users installed it and left, and the "free alternative" buzz was just a moment; ② within a few weeks of the OpenCut rewrite launching, it overtakes Concat's growth rate again, which would mean these projects compete on who claims the spot first, leaving latecomers no room; ③ conversely, if the same-template projects like the author's MageCAD also reach several thousand stars within a month or two, the playbook is reusable and worth copying quickly.

Why jub0t/Concat took off

Channel: GitHub | Research date: 2026-11-06 | Data card: cards/gh_jub0t__Concat.json

One line

Concat is a free, open-source, locally run desktop and Android video editor written in Rust, going head-to-head with CapCut (the international version of 剪映). CapCut raised prices in 2026 and put features behind a paywall, so users are looking for alternatives. At the same time, the former open-source leader OpenCut is doing a full rewrite and has stopped updating. Concat arrived in that gap. First it took off when the author posted on Reddit that they'd "used Claude to build a CapCut replacement in three weeks." In mid-October, short-video creators in several countries on TikTok and Instagram made "free CapCut" videos on their own, and the audience expanded from developers to ordinary people who edit video.

Key facts

  • Repo created 2026-08-25 (originally called WolfCut, renamed to Concat in early September; sources: jiti.me 2026-09-11 "Concat (ex-WolfCut)," and the old repo jub0t/WolfCut on fossy.dev).
  • Stars: 2026-09-16 about 2.3k (anothernews.io) → 10-05 about 4.1k (r/BestGitHubRepos post title) → 10-16 6,414 → 11-06 14,367 (our GitHub database); 11-06 GitHub API live: 14,604 stars, 1,816 forks. Biggest single-day gain was 1,040 (10-17); over the last 7 days it added 1,760, and in the 7 days before that 2,211. Growth is slowing, but it still adds about 200 a day.
  • Release download count (GitHub API, 11-06) totals about 450k: v0.2.8 (10-20) 213,614 downloads, v0.2.7 (10-13) 132,979 downloads, v0.2.5 (09-28) 45,803 downloads, and earlier versions are in the thousands to low tens of thousands. Downloads spiked in mid-October, which suggests the audience is no longer just developers reading code, but a lot of ordinary users installing the app directly.
  • Author Jareer A. (jub0t), a self-taught indie developer. He previously built the Discord bot dashboard Mechon (292 stars) and a Tailwind component library (297 stars). No big-name backing; X account @jarears, 694 followers on GitHub.
  • Monetization: no paid tier ("No paywall. Ever."). A paid sponsor, Proxyon (proxy service, with a discount code), is pinned at the top of the README, plus Patreon donations. Licensed under AGPL-3.0, with commercial closed-source licenses sold separately (LICENSING.md).

CapCut (ByteDance)iOS/Android/Desktop/Web2020Hundreds of millions of usersWhat it's replacing. In 2026, CapCut Pro went from about $9.99/month to $19.99/month, and some 1080p export and AI features moved behind the paywall (whysogeek 2026-08-24; CapCut official help page 2026-03/04, "Why do some features require payment now"). Concat makes all of these free and runs them locally.

Takeaway: "open-source CapCut alternative" isn't an empty niche. OpenCut already got close to 100k stars a year ago. Concat hit the moment when CapCut's price hike and OpenCut's pause for a rewrite happened at the same time, leaving a gap for "download it now, everything free, local AI."

Growth tactics (evidence)

  1. The author posted across several Reddit subs themselves (confirmed): 08-27 r/foss, 08-28 r/coolgithubprojects (then still called WolfCut), 09-15 r/ClaudeAI, "I used Claude to write a CapCut replacement and now people are actually ditching CapCut for it," 09-16 reposted to r/generativeAI, and 09-18 posted to r/ClaudeCode (Brave search results). The "one person wrote a CapCut replacement in three weeks with Claude" story travels well in AI circles, and anothernews.io 9-16 ran a story on it (at the time 2.3k stars, 10k downloads).
  2. The Show HN didn't take off (confirmed): 09-18's Show HN got only 5 points and 3 comments (HN Algolia). HN wasn't the source of the traffic.
  3. Creators across several countries reposting it on TikTok and Instagram (confirmed, this wave is the main amplifier): a TikHub search for "concat capcut" turns up hundreds of videos with 120k+ views starting in October: @manuel.travelling 10-11 124k views; Vietnamese @100dayvibecoding 10-16 74k views (right next to 10-17's single-day +1,040 stars peak); @theaiimpact (53k followers) 10-20 16k views; there are also videos in Spanish (@lluisjimenez.ugc, @saul_vicentem, @karrerai), Portuguese, Turkish, and Vietnamese (@duongmarketing, 95k followers). Instagram and Facebook groups also have a batch of "FREE CapCut alternative" reposts (found via Jina search), plus Indonesian-language posts. All of it is "free CapCut / bye bye CapCut" tool-recommendation content; I see no paid-partnership disclosures.
  4. Media and aggregator coverage (confirmed): VseZavislo (09-22), jiti.me (French, 09-11), the Zentor blog (09-01), LockerGnome (10-23, covering the MCP angle), Neowin, TechPP (11-05), dev.to, opensourcealternatives.to, a SourceForge mirror, a Trendshift badge, and r/BestGitHubRepos (10-05 plus about 10-23 posts). On the Chinese side, someone reframed it as a post for "people making AI short videos" (excerpt from a Trendshift page).
  5. README translated into 26 languages, plus 14–26 languages in the app (confirmed): This makes it easy for creators in non-English regions to spread it. Vietnamese, Spanish, Portuguese, and Turkish creators have already shown up.
  6. SEO and naming: The repo name, topics, and description all pack in keywords like "CapCut replacement / free video editor." The official site is concat.standalones.org, with a mirror at concatenate.pages.dev, and the download button is very prominent. I didn't see any ad spend (the ad library only tracks products on our list, so not finding ads doesn't mean there were none).

Why it could take off

  • Timing: CapCut moved to subscriptions and raised prices in 2026 2–April, locking features behind a paywall. People have been searching for and writing about "CapCut alternatives" ever since (whysogeek, BIGVU, and EditFixer all covered it). In the Show HN, the author said the reason directly: "CapCut is putting everything behind a paywall."
  • The gap: OpenCut, the ready-made "open-source CapCut," is being rewritten. The classic version is web-only and hasn't been updated since September. Concat is the one you can download and install today.
  • The "written with Claude in three weeks" story: The first wave in mid-September on r/ClaudeAI ran almost entirely on this story, and those people are exactly the ones who star open-source projects.
  • Feature list mapped against CapCut's paid items: Auto-captions (local Whisper), TTS + voice cloning, background removal, 4K export, no watermark, no account required. These are exactly what CapCut charges for, packaged as a "free CapCut Pro" that a creator can explain in one sentence.
  • Ships fast: From late August to Nov 5, it shipped several versions 0.2.1~v0.2.9 (plus twenty-odd pre-releases before that), covering Windows/macOS/Linux/Android, with iOS sideloading. Regular people can open it and use it right away, which is why creators are willing to promote it.
  • MCP/JSON-RPC is an extra selling point for developers: LockerGnome and dev.to wrote specifically about "letting Claude edit your video for you." Ordinary users in this wave weren't coming for that.

Differentiation

Versus CapCut: completely free, runs locally, no account, footage never uploaded. It targets CapCut's two pain points, the price hikes and the terms of service (granting rights to use your content). Versus the open-source veterans (Shotcut/Kdenlive): it's built around a CapCut-style short-video workflow and comes with local AI features. Versus OpenCut: it's a native Rust app with AI running locally, and you can download it and it's still being updated. Versus agent-editing projects: it's first a full GUI for humans, with MCP as a bonus.

Differentiation explains why it took off, but only part of it. The positioning of "free + local AI + ready-made installers" caught the demand left behind by CapCut's price hikes and OpenCut's pause. What really amplified the numbers was "free CapCut," a line creators could explain instantly, plus the Claude-wrote-it story. MCP only brought developer attention along for the ride.

Visibility

Already widely discussed: Neowin, TechPP, LockerGnome and other tech outlets have covered it, anothernews wrote up the "written with Claude" angle, creators on TikTok in multiple countries have made videos, and multiple Reddit communities have discussed it. Revenue isn't public (only the sponsor and Patreon, with no amounts disclosed).

Copycats / name riders

  • concatvideoeditor.com: a third-party "independent guide" site using the Concat name for SEO.
  • opencut-desktop-app/opencut (1 stars): borrows the OpenCut name as SEO bait for "one-click install + free AI," pushing the same selling point.
  • Donkey Cut (donkeycut.com) also calls itself "Free, Open Source CapCut Alternative," focused on chat-based editing.
  • FilmCraft (ArtCraft team, 09-30 repo, 17.6k stars): also a pure-Rust open-source NLE, aimed at a more professional audience. Part of the same wave.
  • The author is copying this playbook too: MageCAD ("Open-source AutoDesk Fusion replacement," 10-11) and Retrace (hand-drawn explainer animation editor, with API & MCP support, 10-22), both using the "open source + replace a paid big-company tool + MCP" template.

What others can borrow

  1. Watch big companies raise prices and lock features, then build a "free replacement." List features directly against the other side's paid items, one by one, so people can repeat the pitch in a sentence.
  2. Watch the open-source flagship that's already popular but has stopped updating or is being rewritten. Take the "can download and use it now" spot first.
  3. In AI communities like r/ClaudeAI, "I wrote X in a few weeks with AI" carries built-in virality. But the real volume comes from short-video creators aimed at ordinary users, so have installers, multiple languages, and a prominent download button ready so they feel safe promoting it.
  4. Open-source software can still make money with AGPL + commercial licensing + a sponsor slot + Patreon.

Unknowns

  • Whether the TikTok/Instagram videos involved paid partnerships or the creators were contacted by the author wasn't verified (no disclosure labels seen).
  • How much the sponsor and Patreon bring in is unknown. How many of the 450k downloads stuck around and actually used it is also unknown (233 issues suggests real users are using it).
  • The upvote count for the original r/ClaudeAI post wasn't collected (Reddit 403).
  • No daily star data for 9-16 to 10-16, so the numbers are inferred from the figures cited in a few articles.
  • The reason for the rename from WolfCut wasn't found (possibly related to a name clash with "Cut" or a trademark issue, unverified).
