# The old tablet on the wall no longer has to pay Fully Kiosk: how Kiosk Satellite collected 2,500 stars in four months

**What it is** A free Android app that turns an old tablet, or a rooted Echo Show or Meta Portal, into a dedicated Home Assistant wall panel, with a built-in voice assistant, music, photo-frame screensaver and remote management.

**Why it took off** The author first built a user base with a voice plugin, then pushed a companion native app as "official": one APK replaces the paid Fully Kiosk and several accessories. A post on r/homeassistant and the HA forum for one feature was picked up by YouTube and German blogs, and it rode the wave of people rooting ad-ruined Echo devices to connect them to Home Assistant.

**C** **How you could apply it** Don't build another HA wall-panel app; copy the playbook: find a self-hosted ecosystem (Jellyfin, Frigate, openHAB, etc.) where users are paying for a generic tool that doesn't understand that ecosystem, ship a plugin first to collect users, then a native app, and post in the community for every older device you support.

C grade: the playbook is clear and worth copying, but the HA wall-panel slot is already taken. Ava-Pro, same positioning and launched half a year earlier, has only 593 stars. Kiosk Satellite's advantage is its author's existing user base and four months of 322 releases at high intensity. Switching to a different ecosystem, the star ceiling is probably around one to two thousand. Word is spreading in small circles

A long-time Home Assistant community member has combined the three or four things you'd install on an old wall tablet (the paid Fully Kiosk, a voice assistant, a Bluetooth proxy, and music and photo screensavers) into one free Android app. In 114 days it has 2,502 stars and 189k APK downloads, with not a single mainstream tech outlet covering it. Its stars didn't come from one viral post; they were earned in a small community, one post and one device at a time. Below: what it is, where the stars came from, why an app with the same positioning that launched half a year earlier got only a quarter of its traction, and whether you should follow this path.

### One weekend, five Fully Kiosk tablets retired

In 2026 Sep 13, a user named manunited10 wrote on the official Home Assistant forum:

> After trying it last night for an hour, it gave me confidence to retire Fully Kiosk on my 5 dashboards around the house and use this great app.

"I spent an hour with it last night and decided to replace the Fully Kiosk on all 5 of my home screens." The same day, another user, fahrer, wrote: "This weekend I switched two tablets over from Fully Kiosk. It understands Home Assistant better." Also that day, YouTuber mostlychris posted a 38-minute review that has since reached 55k views.

The thread was started by the author, Xavier Larrea, on Sep 9, titled "Would love feedback on Kiosk Satellite." It has 11-06,199 replies and 6,236 views on the HA forum. Scrolling through, the phrase "switched from Fully Kiosk" appears a dozen times or more: someone swapped in 3 Galaxy tablets, someone replaced ThinkSmart units they'd used for years, someone said "I always knew Fully Kiosk wasn't the right one," and someone else said "I've never been happy with how Fully Kiosk looks or how it's configured, but there was no better option."

### What it actually is

An Android app that turns old wall-mounted tablets (or rooted Echo Shows and Meta Portals) into screens dedicated to Home Assistant. What it does:

| What you used to install | The Kiosk Satellite equivalent |
|---|---|
| Fully Kiosk (full-screen lock, screensaver, remote management; advanced tier paid per device) | Built in and free; also remote screenshots, log viewing, and unified configuration across multiple devices in the browser |
| A voice satellite setup | Native HA voice satellite, wake words work with the screen off, ten UI skins |
| An ESP32 acting as a Bluetooth proxy | The app is its own Bluetooth proxy |
| Music and photos | Music Assistant synced playback, AirPlay, lyrics; Immich photo screensaver, weather and starfield screensavers |

There are also camera face wake-up, intercom between devices, alarms, and a family calendar. German YouTuber Sascha Brockel explained it most clearly in the blog that accompanies his 49k-view video "Fully Kiosk ade" (Goodbye Fully Kiosk): previously you needed "a Fully Kiosk for display, an integration for voice, and an ESP32 as a Bluetooth proxy"; now it's one APK.

Free, but the license is CC BY-NC-ND: personal use is fine, commercial use is not, and you can't distribute modified versions. Strictly speaking it's source-available, not open source. Its only revenue channel is Buy Me a Coffee.

### How the stars came in

GitHub daily star count: 08-03 259 → 08-28 550 → 10-09 1,506 → 10-19 1,827 → 11-01 2,208 → 11-02 2,365 (+157 in a single day, the peak) → 11-06 2,502. Over the last 7 days, +339. It never made the GitHub trending page, there was no Hacker News post, and almost nobody mentioned it on X.

Breaking it down, four forces stacked on top of each other:

1. **The author's existing users moved over first** . In 2026 February the author had built Voice Satellite Card, a plugin that turns an HA web dashboard into a voice assistant. It now has 919 stars, and its forum thread has 5,168 views. Browser-based voice has real limitations: it stops listening when the screen turns off, and an HTTP dashboard without a certificate can't access the microphone. In Jul 20 the new app debuted on r/homeassistant with the title "Official companion kiosk app for Voice Satellite, free and open source." The first batch of users was already waiting.

2. **One post per feature** . 08-05 beta release, 08-15 feedback request, German and French added, 10-02 real-time conversation, 10-14 root tool for Meta Portal, 10-18 Echo Dot support... each got its own post on r/homeassistant. Users posted too: 08-31 someone wrote a thank-you post, 10-19 someone posted "Kiosk Satellite... wow!", and someone else wrote a comparison with View Assist.

3. **YouTube and blogs followed up** . After mostlychris's review on Sep 13, stars climbed from 550 in late August to 1,506 in early October, and the timing lines up. German-speaking coverage kept pace: Sascha Brockel's video and long-form article, a blog from tink.de (a German smart-home retailer), plus rutg3r.com's "Replacing Fully Kiosk" and Worm Pop Labs' wall-panel app comparison. The titles all target the "Fully Kiosk alternative" search term. I saw no sponsorship disclosures.

4. **Riding the "flash Echo" wave** . Amazon is stuffing the Echo Show's home screen with ads and pushing Alexa+, Meta Portal has been discontinued, and over the past year more and more people have been flashing them with LineageOS to run Home Assistant. The author didn't just wait for others to do it: in Oct 4 he released a root tool for Portal, in Oct 23 a LineageOS image called the "Kiosk Satellite edition," and the Oct 28 version even runs on screenless Echo Dots. 10-13 to 10-19, one week: +285 stars; the flashing tool echo-dot-assist went from 59 stars in Oct 9 to 730 by early November. Someone on the forums said their Echo Show 8 "was gathering dust, now it's a photo frame plus speaker."

The 11-02 jump of +157 came from several things hitting at once: a major release adding neural-network echo cancellation, tink.de and Worm Pop Labs articles going live the same day, and Sascha Brockel's video still spreading. Which one was the main driver is hard to say.

### Why an app with the same positioning, launched half a year earlier, got only a quarter of the traction

This opportunity isn't empty:

| Who | What it is | Scale | How it differs from Kiosk Satellite |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fully Kiosk Browser | Generic kiosk browser, advanced tier paid per device | Google Play 867k installs | No HA-specific voice, music, or ESPHome support |
| HA's official Companion App | Phone companion app | Google Play 4.97M installs | Not a wall panel: no lock mode, screensaver, or always-on wake word |
| Ava / Ava-Pro | Open-source Android, "voice-first HA kiosk" | 593 stars, launched 2025-12 | Nearly identical positioning, half a year earlier |
| View Assist | HA integration plus companion app | 555 star,2024-03 | Leans toward visual voice feedback, complex setup |
| TouchKio | Linux / Raspberry Pi touchscreen | 1,692 star | Same job, but not on Android |
| WallPanel | Veteran open-source kiosk shell | 766 / 611 star | Mostly unmaintained, no voice |
| echo-dot-assist, TECHO5, EchoLocal | Firmware that turns an Echo into a voice satellite | 730 / 545 / 535 star | Complementary pieces in the same wave |

Ava-Pro shows that positioning alone isn't enough. Kiosk Satellite had three extra advantages:

- **A user base from day one** . Voice Satellite Card users were already waiting for a native version.

- **Absurdly fast release cadence** . 114 days, 322 releases, and in early November it shipped 5 versions in 2026.11.8 days; 0 open issues; 199 forum posts where the author replies to nearly every one, and user feature requests often ship the next day. The commit messages are long and tidy, each noting "verified on Tab S8 / not tested on real hardware," which looks like high-frequency AI-assisted development (my inference).

- **Looks good** . Tools in the HA community usually have an engineer's aesthetic, but this one leads with "beautiful": ten voice skins, weather-mood screensavers, full-screen lyrics. The screenshots and GIFs are made for sharing. There's also an unexpected effect: some users complained that "my HA dashboard isn't good enough for it, I have to redo everything."

### If it were you

**Grade C: the playbook is worth copying, but building another HA wall-panel app now is late. Using this playbook somewhere else, the star ceiling is probably only one to two thousand, and you'd still need months of intense maintenance.**

**Who it suits** : developers who already have a small plugin with a few hundred stars in some self-hosted or smart-home community and a group of long-time users; people willing to ship nearly every day for months and reply to every post.

**Who it doesn't suit** : anyone wanting to build yet another Home Assistant wall-panel app. Ava-Pro launched half a year earlier with the same positioning and is stuck at 593 stars. Anyone wanting to fork the code and distribute a modified version, since the license forbids distributing modifications. Anyone with no presence in any community hoping one post will go viral. Its 2,500 stars came from four months of posting every week, not from a single hit.

**How to do it:**

- Find a spot like this: users of some self-hosted ecosystem who are paying for a "generic paid tool" that doesn't understand that ecosystem. Candidates (my inference, not individually checked): TV walls and photo frames for Jellyfin / Plex, wall monitoring screens for Frigate cameras, wall panels for openHAB or ioBroker (both big in German-speaking regions), and dedicated e-photo frames for Immich.

- Ship a web plugin first to collect users, then a "native companion app from the official team," and move into it what the web can't do: screen-off operation, background running, hardware interfaces.

- Treat "revive your old XX device" as ongoing post material: each device you support gives you another "my XX isn't gathering dust anymore" post. If you can produce flashing images yourself and cut the process to one click, the effect doubles.

- Forget the iPad route: HA's official iOS app already has a kiosk mode.

**How to get users** : in that ecosystem's Reddit subreddits and official forums, post once per feature; open a long "feedback wanted" thread and reply to every comment. Put "free alternative to XX" straight in the title and README, and let bloggers write the comparisons for you. Find the ecosystem's long-form YouTubers (like mostlychris with his 38-minute video) and cover German-speaking creators separately.

**Timing** : the "root Echo / Portal and connect it to Home Assistant" wave is still growing. Tools like echo-dot-assist gained more than tenfold in a month, so people will probably still be looking for companion software into the first half of 2027. To ride this wave, target devices or firmware layers it doesn't cover yet, not another wall-panel app.

**What it looks like if we misread it** : (1) Kiosk Satellite stops updating or goes paid, and people in the forums start hunting for an alternative. That leaves the HA wall-panel slot open again, so you can just move in. (2) Someone builds a dedicated app in the Jellyfin or Frigate ecosystem that passes 2,000 stars within three months, which would show the playbook is copyable and the grade should go up. (3) Amazon blocks the Echo unlock exploit in firmware, and star growth on the flashing tools stalls. That closes the revive-old-devices route.

## Why Kiosk Satellite (jxlarrea/kiosk-satellite) took off

### Bottom line

This is a free Android "wall panel" app in the Home Assistant (HA) community. It took off for three reasons:

1. **Migrating existing users** : the author already had a user base for Voice Satellite Card, and the new app launched as the "official companion app."

2. **One app replaces three** : it combines Fully Kiosk (paid), voice satellite, Bluetooth proxy, music, and photo screensaver, which used to be separate installs, into a single app built specifically for HA.

3. **Rode the "flash Echo / Meta Portal" wave** : the author released LineageOS images so that flashed older Echo Show, Echo Dot, and Meta Portal devices can run the app directly.

Distribution happened almost entirely inside the HA niche: r/homeassistant, the HA official forum, mostlychris and German-language YouTubers, and German blogs. No paid acquisition, and no Hacker News or major tech media coverage.

### Key facts

- Built the library 2026-07-15; first beta 2026-07-18,2026-08-05 announced leaving beta (GitHub releases; Reddit post 1vgeddx).

- Stars: 2026-08-03 259 → 08-28 550 → 10-09 1506 → 10-19 1827 → 11-01 2208 → 11-02 2365 (single day +157) → 11-06 2502 (our GitHub repo_day / data card). In the last 7 days: +339. GitHub API reading 2511 at 11-06.

- **APK downloads** : total downloads across all release assets come to 188,830 (GitHub API, 2026-11-06). This number is a closer proxy for real usage than stars, but upgrades count as downloads too, so it double-counts.

- **Very high release frequency** : 322 releases in 114 days, and the November release reached 2026.11.8 in just 5 days. Commit messages are very long, and each one carries a paragraph saying "verified on Tab S8" or "not tested on device." This looks like high-frequency AI-assisted development (inferred, not confirmed).

- License: CC BY-NC-ND 4.0, free for personal use, no commercial use, no redistribution of modified versions. So the source is public, but it is not open source in the OSI sense, even though it is consistently promoted as "free and open source." Its only revenue is Buy Me a Coffee tips.

- Author Xavier Larrea: GitHub account created in 2010, 140 followers. In 2019 he built ha-bt-proximity (91★), and in 2026-02 he built Voice Satellite Card (919★), wyoming-voice-match (94★), and LLM tools (78★). He is an established player in the HA community, but not a big name.

### Competitors

| Product | Where | Launched | Scale | How it differs from Kiosk Satellite |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fully Kiosk Browser & Lockdown | Android(Play) | mid-2010s | Play installs 866,768 (our googleplay library) | A general kiosk browser, with advanced features behind a paid PLUS license (per device). It doesn't handle HA voice, Music Assistant, or ESPHome. KS's pitch is "free + built for HA," and the recurring line in reviews is "I paid for Fully Kiosk and switched anyway." |
| Home Assistant official Companion App | Android | 2019 | Play installs 4,973,135 | A phone companion app, not a wall panel: no lock, screensaver, or always-on wake word, the kiosk features. |
| WallPanel(thecowan / TheTimeWalker) | Open source | 2018 / 2022 | 766★ / 611★ | An old kiosk shell, essentially no longer updated, no voice. |
| View Assist(dinki) | Open source (HA integration + companion app) | 2024-03 | 555★ | Leans toward "Alexa-replacement voice + visual feedback" and is complicated to configure. A Reddit comparison thread (1x93lbc) has a user saying "I tried both, and KS runs on 4 devices." |
| Ava / Ava-Pro(knoop7) | Open-source Android | 2025-12 | 593★ | Almost the same positioning ("voice-first HA kiosk," Android 5+, native C++). It launched half a year earlier, but has only a quarter of KS's stars. |
| TouchKio(leukipp) | Open source, Linux / Raspberry Pi | 2024-12 | 1,692★ | Does the same job, but on Linux touchscreens rather than Android. |
| Dashie Android | Open source (AGPL) | 2026-08 | 182★ | Leans toward a family calendar dashboard. |
| EchoLocal / TECHO5 / echo-dot-assist | Open source firmware | 2026-07~09 | 535★ / 545★ / 730★ | A firmware route that turns Echo into an HA voice satellite. It complements KS in the same wave and partly competes with it. |
| lovelace-wallpanel | HA frontend plugin | 2020 | 888★ | Only does screensaver and wall-panel mode in the browser. |
| HA official Voice PE hardware | Big vendor / official hardware | 2024-12 | Not verified | You buy a dedicated speaker as a voice satellite. KS turns an old tablet into a satellite for free, and it has a screen. |

Bottom line: this niche has plenty of competitors, including Ava-Pro, which launched half a year earlier with almost the same positioning. KS wins on **feature integration, release speed, and the existing Voice Satellite user base** , not on being first.

### Growth tactics (evidence)

1. **Migration of existing users / funneling from the author's own product (confirmed)** : the launch Reddit post was titled "Kiosk Satellite: The official Voice Satellite kiosk companion app. Free and open source." (r/homeassistant 1v0xtmn, 2026-07-20). Voice Satellite Card launched 2026-02 and is at 919★ now; its HA forum thread has 5,168 views. KS was built from the start as the "native version" for that group: browsers can't get an always-on mic or wake the screen from sleep, and the native KS app solves that.

2. **Reddit r/homeassistant update posts in a row (confirmed)** : the author posted each major feature in its own thread. 07-20 launch; 08-05 "beta in a month"; 08-15 requesting feedback; German, French, and Spanish support; 10-02 real-time conversation; 10-14 Meta Portal root tool; 10-18 Echo Dot 2 gen support. Users also posted on their own: 08-31 "appreciation post," 10-18 "Shoutout to the Echo Jailbreaks / Kiosk Satellite," 10-19 "Kiosk Satellite... wow!", and 10-18 "View Assist vs Kiosk Satellite" (Brave search results; the Reddit body was blocked, so only the summaries were visible).

3. **HA official forum (confirmed)** : 2026-09-09 posted "Looking for feedback" and the thread now has 199 replies, 6,236 views, and 79 likes (Discourse JSON, 2026-11-06).

4. **YouTube creators (confirmed; looks like organic coverage, no sponsorship label seen)** :
    - mostlychris, 2026-09-13,38-minute review, 54,581 views. The big jump from 8-28 (550★) to 10-09 (1506★) lines up with when this video and the September forum post went up.
    - Sascha Brockel (German), 2026-10-28, titled "Fully Kiosk ade," 49,024 views, with a long companion blog post.
    - There is also an Automation Addict video on modding an Echo Show 5 Gen2 (10-28), and GitHub overview-style reposts (10-24). (YouTube Data API, 2026-11-06)

5. **Blog SEO long tail (confirmed)** : Smart Home Labo (10-11), Unknown Universe review (10-10), tink.de blog (11-02, a German smart-home retailer), rutg3r.com "Replacing Fully Kiosk" (11-03), and the Worm Pop Labs wall-panel app comparison (11-02). The titles of these articles all target the "Fully Kiosk alternative" search intent.

6. **Platform event: the Echo / Portal jailbreak wave (confirmed)** :
    - Background: Amazon's Alexa+ and ads have made the Echo Show annoying to use (HN, "Amazon's giant ads have ruined the Echo Show", 2025-10). Meta discontinued the Portal. From 2025-11 through December there were Derek Seaman's jailbreak tutorial and Dammit Jeff's "Why you NEED to Jailbreak your Amazon Echo."
    - Flashing tools growing at the same time: echo-dot-assist 10-09 to November 59 → 730★, TECHO5 240 → 545★, EchoLocal 377 → 535★ (GitHub repo).
    - What KS did: 7-30 added Echo Show camera and Bluetooth support, 10-04 shipped a root tool for the Meta Portal, 10-23 released a LineageOS "Kiosk Satellite Edition" image, and 10-28 added support for the screenless Echo Dot. The second wave of stars landed right here (10-13 1542 → 10-19 1827, +285 in one week).

7. **11-02 single-day +157 (cause inferred, not fully verified)** : several things landed at the same time. 2026.11.1 major version (neural echo cancellation) shipped; the tink.de blog went live 11-02; Sascha Brockel's video took off after posting 10-28; the Worm Pop Labs comparison piece went up 11-02. Which one was the main driver can't be confirmed.

8. **Channels we didn't find** : no relevant HN threads (hackernews database); 0 mentions in our X corpus (x-radar); no ad spend; never on GitHub trending (data card trending_days_any=0). Distribution skips app stores: APKs are published only on the official site and GitHub, with third-party listings on ShizuStore and githubplay.

### Why it made the charts

- **It hits a real pain point** : Home Assistant users with old tablets on the wall usually have to install Fully Kiosk (paid, licensed per device), set up a voice satellite stack, and buy an ESP32 as a Bluetooth proxy. KS covers all of that in one free APK. Sascha Brockel put it this way: "Fully Kiosk for the display, an integration for voice control, an ESP32 as a Bluetooth proxy."

- **A native app does what browser-based setups can't** : wake from screen-off, background listening, and microphone access from the HTTP dashboard without a certificate. These are exactly the pain points Voice Satellite Card users have, so migrating over is natural.

- **Device coverage keeps growing** : Fire tablets, Echo Show 5/8, Echo Dot (screenless mode), Meta Portal, Raspberry Pi 4, and the Lenovo Smart Clock (issue #1315). Every new supported device gives owners another "my XX is alive again" post to write.

- **Remarkable iteration speed** : 114 releases in 322 days, with issues cleared quickly (data card open_issues=0). The author replies to almost every post in forum threads with 199 replies. That pace keeps users around, and gets them recommending it.

- **Polish** : ten voice skins, a weather ambient screensaver, a starfield screensaver, and Now Playing lyrics. Tools in the HA community tend to feel like engineering projects. KS is marketed as "beautiful," and its screenshots and GIFs spread well in posts.

### Differentiation

Vs. Fully Kiosk: it's built specifically for HA, free, and comes with voice satellite support. Vs. View Assist / Ava: it has more features and works out of the box, with remote management and unified control of multiple devices. Vs. custom firmware (TECHO5 / EchoLocal): regular tablets work without unlocking, and it also ships ready-made images for users who flash their devices.

This differentiation is **really why it took off** , with one caveat: the Voice Satellite user base and the author's reputation came first, and the Echo flashing wave amplified the advantage. Ava-Pro, which had nearly the same positioning and launched half a year earlier, has only 593★. That shows positioning alone isn't enough: execution speed and distribution matter just as much.

### Visibility and copycats

- Visibility: **it's spreading within a small circle** . It's well known inside the HA community: there are organic Reddit recommendations, two YouTube videos with about 50k views, and German-language blogs covering it. Outside HA, almost nobody has heard of it. HN, X, and mainstream tech media (XDA, Android Police, etc.) haven't covered it. It makes no money; it only gets tips.

- Copycats: none found copying it directly. GitHub only has ordinary forks (davidcoulson, phillc, philmcneely). Dashie Android and Panalume, which appeared around the same time (from mostlychris's video 10-18), are adjacent HA dashboard products, not copies.

### Takeaways

- Ship a small plugin first, build a user base, then push an "official companion native app." That naturally brings migration traffic.

- In a highly engaged enthusiast community (r/homeassistant, the HA forum), post once per feature and once per newly supported device to keep steady visibility.

- Target the search intent for a free alternative to a paid incumbent ("Fully Kiosk alternative") and let bloggers write comparison pieces for you.

- Ride a platform event (big companies broke devices and discontinued them) by offering "revival" solutions for old hardware, including your own flashable images, to lower the barrier as far as possible.

### Uncertain

- Who drove 11-02's single-day +157 can't be confirmed.

- Reddit post upvotes and comment counts aren't available (Reddit 403); we only see search snippets.

- Real active install count is unknown. The 189k APK downloads include repeat downloads from frequent upgrades.

- Whether the development is AI-assisted (high release cadence, long commit messages) is only an inference.

- Whether the CC BY-NC-ND license will be commercialized later (e.g. commercial licensing) is unknown.

This article was written by AI from public data and the data we collect daily. Numbers are sourced, and inferences are labeled.
