Someone on TikTok said "who's going to turn Capri into a desktop pet". 13 hours later, a Melbourne developer who makes Roblox games shipped a version
What it is A free, open-source Windows desktop pet that puts Capri from <i>Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2</i> on your desktop. She can chat, talk, open apps, and join Discord calls.
Why it took off The show had just launched and the character was hot. Someone wished for it on TikTok, the author shipped a downloadable version 13 hours later, then posted a demo video a day for weeks, funneling anime fans straight to the download button.
CHow you could follow this Don't clone Capri. Build a desktop-pet base that can be re-skinned quickly, ship the same day as the next breakout character's wish post, and make your own short videos. If you want stars, add a feature for programmers (for example, a companion for Claude Code).

<i>Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2</i> premiered on Netflix on Oct 20, and the show's digital persona Capri suddenly blew up. Three days later, an anime account on TikTok casually said "someone should turn her into a desktop pet". The next morning, lachy created the repo and shipped a downloadable version, then used his own TikTok to post a demo video a day. Over two weeks it got about 8M views, 180k installer downloads, and a 14k-member Discord. On GitHub, however, it has just over 400 stars. For anyone trying to win stars with open source, the lesson here is how to ride a trend, and why download counts and star counts can differ by hundreds of times.
A 279k-view wish post
On the evening of Oct 23 (UTC 19:36), anime TikTok account @jpartnma_ (6,270 followers) posted a video with one line of caption: "Someone should turn Capri into a desktop mate 👀". The video later reached 279k views and 38k likes (TikTok, 11-06).
13 hours later, on Oct 24 at 08:28 UTC, lachydotmcg/capri-desktop appeared on GitHub. That afternoon, the author's TikTok account @lachysdev posted the first video: "Comment what else I should add!!", with a download page link and a tag for @jpartnma_. The README still opens with a small line: "Inspired by jpartnma_'s TikTok video."
Before this, @lachysdev was an account making Roblox games, with two videos at 15k and 7k views.
What it is
A Windows desktop pet (later with a Mac/Linux preview and a Meta Quest VR version), written in C# and free and open source. Capri sits on the edge of your window, swings her legs, flails when dragged by the mouse, and sways to music. Connect an LLM and she can chat, talk, open apps, play music, and play games with you. From 0.8.3 she can join your Discord call and "make excuses for you", and there's a mode that makes her a "moving body" for Claude Code / Codex. The barrier is very low: a single Setup.exe, and in the UI one click connects to free NVIDIA model endpoints. Local models work too if you don't want to go online.
The first line of the README is "Bring Capri (back lol) to life as a desktop companion!", followed by a disclaimer: this is an unofficial fan project with no ties to CD PROJEKT RED, the animation rights holders, or the voice actors.
Where the traffic came from: the author was the one making the videos
Since 10-24, @lachysdev has posted 16 Capri videos, nearly all of them real footage of "she did something on my computer again", with a consistent caption of "free in my bio" plus #cyberpunk #capri #edgerunners. The most-viewed ones (TikTok, 11-06):
| Date | Video | Views |
|---|---|---|
| 10-24 | "Comment what else I should add!!" @jpartnma_ | 278k |
| 10-25 | "Linux and app control tomorrow? Early access in Discord" | 640k |
| 10-26 | "Anyone can use it! Stuck? Come to Discord" | 940k |
| 10-28 | "It's free and open sourced in my bio!!" | 1.67M |
| 11-01 | "SHE DELETED SYSTEM32" (the parenthetical in the caption is a joke) | 850k |
| 11-04 | "Capri-desktop is completely free!" | 1.28M |
| 11-05 | "My capri is free, and malware free 😭" | 1.14M |
The single-day GitHub star peak was 10-28, +74, on the same day as the 1.66M-view video. After that it grew steadily by 20 to 46 stars a day, reaching 11-06 stars on 380 (GitHub daily records), with about 408 stars and 85 forks in real time at the time of writing.
The product is built to be long-form short video: she sits on your window, struggles when dragged, "deleted System32", joins a Discord call and talks for you. Every new feature becomes a new video. The author also treats the comments as a feature backlog: one video reads "idea by @bigshrimpin7", another teases "launching tomorrow", so viewers come back to see whether it was delivered. In 13 days it shipped 26 versions (v0.1.0 to v0.8.4) and 1,000+ commits. The commit messages read like they were written with AI coding tools (inferred).
Why 180k downloads but only 400 stars
On GitHub Releases, the Windows installer Capri-Setup.exe has about 183k cumulative downloads (summed across 26 versions, including re-downloads on upgrade), with over four thousand each for Mac and Linux, and the Quest build at 363 (11-06). The download counter on the official site capriai.app says 49k, with unclear counting. The Discord has about 14k members and 4,500+ online at once.
Downloads run hundreds of times ahead of stars for a simple reason: the people arriving are anime fans scrolling TikTok, and they click the pink "Download for Windows" button, not the star in the top right. The most-liked comments read "In 50 years I can get cyberware" (40k likes) and "Can it be ported to glasses?". Another frequent comment type is "is this a virus" and "Windows says this might be a virus", and most of these people don't know what GitHub stars are for.
The same-subject project with the most stars took a different route. mochiiwuff/capri-desktop launched a day later (10-25), built on Electron, pitched as a "narrator for Claude Code / Codex", got covered by tech sites like LockerGnome, and has 11-06 stars and 557 forks, with a single-day peak of +107 (182). It attracts programmers, and programmers hit stars.
A dozen Capris within a week
The same character, the same week, at least ten same-subject projects:
| Project | Where | Scale (11-06) | How it differs |
|---|---|---|---|
| mochiiwuff/capri-desktop | GitHub, open source | 557 stars | Aimed at programmers, narrating AI coding tools |
| Capri Ai(sigmasheron) | itch.io, pay what you want | A YouTube video claims 18k+ downloads; covered by ixbt.games 10-26 | Closed source; the first one media wrote about |
| ChannelCooperStart/capri-ai, boardshogunfluctuate/Capri-AI, capri-com/Capri-AI | GitHub | 371 / 287 / 32 stars | Newly registered accounts with a single repo each and near-identical descriptions, looks like name-squatting (whether it's malicious is unverified) |
| kystt29/capricorn and six or seven others | GitHub | 26–110 stars | Weak in both features and distribution |
| Project Capri | Microsoft Store, 11-02 | Unknown | Developer unknown |
| SourceForge "Capri Desktop Companion" | Mirror site | Unknown | Repackaged lachy's installer |
| Capri voice companion mod on Nexus Mods | Cyberpunk 2077, in-game | GetRekt and other outlets | In the game, not on your desktop |
| Desktop Mate | Steam,2025 | Official licensed character DLC, $14.99 each | Official, paid, no LLM |
lachy isn't the one with the most stars, and he wasn't the first to write about it, but judging by downloads, Discord and views, he's probably the one who reached the most ordinary fans. On 11-04 he switched to his own domain, capriai.app, and his videos and README keep saying "only download from the official site or GitHub" and "malware free", a direct answer to the pile of similarly named repos.
The risks are on the surface
- Copyright: the character belongs to CD PROJEKT RED and the animation rights holders, and the README itself says it's unofficial. Under a video with 1.66M views, a comment with 2,900 likes says "the voice actress has said she doesn't want her voice copied." Once rights holders act, the project could be taken down outright.
- Hype rides on one show: once the show's buzz fades, how many people stay is unknown.
- Safety perception: unsigned exes get flagged by Windows and antivirus software, there are many copycat repos, and the comments keep asking whether it's a virus.
If it were you
Verdict: the Capri slot is already crowded, so another Capri desktop pet has no point. What's worth copying is the playbook: "new show / new game character × desktop pet." When you see a request post, ship a build within 24 hours and film short videos yourself. But that mainly earns downloads and fans, not stars. To get stars, you need to do what mochiiwuff did and turn the same character into something programmers can actually use. The whole thing depends on timing, and the window is measured in days.
Who it's for: developers already scrolling anime and gaming content on TikTok who are willing to show their face on camera or record their screen; people with a desktop-pet base that can be reskinned fast (animation, dragging, LLM hookup and installer all ready), so a new character can go in within one evening.
Who it's not for: people who want to build slowly and polish; people who won't make videos and only plan to publish on GitHub and wait for stars (most similar projects that did this stalled at a few dozen); people who care about copyright risk and don't want the project taken down at any time.
How to do it:
- Build the base first, tied to no character: transparent window, a character sitting on the window edge, drag-reaction animations, voice, support for free or local models, a one-click installer, Mac / Linux builds.
- Watch TikTok and Reddit for the week after a new anime, show or game launches, and search "desktop mate", "someone should make" and similar request posts. When you find one, reskin and ship the same day, tag the original poster in the video, and credit the inspiration in the README.
- For stars, add a use case for programmers (a companion for Claude Code / Codex, talking in the terminal), and post to GitHub circles, Hacker News and tech sites. For users, make short "here's what she did now" videos and run Discord support. Pursue both tracks at once.
- Have these ready on day one: your own domain, a statement that you only recognize these two download sources, a page explaining antivirus false positives, and code signing if you can.
How to get users: short videos are the main channel, one per new feature, with a caption of just "free in my bio." Build whatever the comments ask for, and name the people who requested features in your next video. For the programmer track, lean on animated GIFs in the GitHub README and a post along the lines of "give Claude Code an animated companion."
When "before" is: not a calendar date, but "the first few days after the character goes viral." lachy took 4 days from the show's release to shipping, only 13 hours after the request post; similar projects started piling in by day 5. Entering a week later, you're mostly left with copycat leftovers.
Signs you misread it: ① when the next viral character comes out, no similar desktop pet gets over 100 stars within a week, which means this was a one-off for Capri; ② rights holders start mass-removing fan desktop pets (DMCA), and this path closes; ③ lachy's repo grows by single digits a day within a month after the show's buzz fades, and Discord activity drops sharply, which means this kind of project only has a short window and isn't worth building a base for.

lachydotmcg/capri-desktop: why it took off
Research date 2026-11-06. Data card: repo created 2026-10-24,13 days ago with 380 stars (GitHub API live that day: 408 stars / 85 forks), +7 over the last 212 days, single-day peak +74 (10-28).
One line
The character Capri from "Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2" (Netflix, released 2026-10-20) blew up. 10-23 an anime account on TikTok posted "someone should turn Capri into a desktop mate" (279k views). The author, lachy (Melbourne, previously building on Roblox), created the repo and shipped 13 hours later, then used his own TikTok account @lachysdev to post one demo video a day. Over two weeks, that added up to about 8M views and drove fans to the GitHub Release downloads. Stars were a side effect; the real volume was about 180k Setup.exe downloads and a 14k-member Discord.
What it is
A C# desktop pet for Windows (later Mac/Linux previews and Quest VR): Capri sits on the window edge, struggles when dragged, and sways to music. It connects to LLMs (free NVIDIA key / local Ollama / OpenRouter, etc.) for chat, voice, opening apps, playing music, and keeping you company while you game. From 0.8.3 on, she can join Discord calls to make excuses for you, and there's a "Code/Husk Mode" that gives Claude Code / Codex a moving body. It has a mods folder (lachydotmcg/capri-mods). Free, open source, zero telemetry. The README says "Inspired by jpartnma_'s TikTok video." Sources: repo README, capriai.app.

Downloads are hundreds of times the star count: users are mostly TikTok viewers of anime, not developers, so they download the exe rather than starring the repo.
Timeline
- 10-20 "Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2" released on Netflix (Netflix Tudum / Wikipedia). Capri is a digital persona construct in the show, playful and prone to teasing, and viewers responded strongly (Reddit r/TopCharacterDesigns, Instagram and others discussed her).
- 10-23 19:36 UTC TikTok @jpartnma_ (an anime account with 6,270 followers) posted "Someone should turn Capri into a desktop mate 👀", 279k views / 38k likes (TikHub).
- 10-24 08:28 UTC repo created; 12:40 @lachysdev posted the first video, "Comment what else I should add!! lachydotmcg.github.io/capri-desktop/ … @jpartnma_", 278k views (TikHub).
- Two videos over 10-25 to 10-26 reached 640k and 940k views; around 10-25, several similar open-source repos appeared at once (see competitors).
- 10-28 07:00 UTC video "It's free and open sourced in my bio!!" 1.67M views / 184k likes / 23k shares, same day GitHub hit its single-day peak of +74 stars.
- From 10-29 to 11-06 it posted 10 more: "SHE DELETED SYSTEM32" 11-01 with 850k views, "Capri-desktop is completely free!" 11-04 with 1.28M, and "My capri is free, and malware free 😭 download at capriai.app" 11-05 with 1.13M.
- From 11-04 it had its own domain capriai.app, a mods repo, and a Quest VR version; on 11-05 it posted 0.8.4 and started a Discord help bot.
TikTok account @lachysdev: 19,922 followers, 918k total likes, 18 videos. Before this it only had two Roblox dev videos (10-24k and 15k views) (TikHub 7 11-06).

| SourceForge "Capri Desktop Companion" | Mirror site | About 10-31 | Unknown | Repackages lachy's release (matching description and filenames), not by the author |
| Capri - AI Companion with Voice (LLM) (Gerik17), Capricorn AI Cyberdeck | Nexus Mods (in-game mod for Cyberpunk 2077) | Around 11-02 | covered by GetRekt and VidaExtra | In the game, not on your desktop |
| Desktop Mate | Steam (big-studio product) | 2025 | Sells official licensed character DLC, $14.99 each | Official licensed and paid; the Capri version is unofficial, free, and uses an LLM to actually do work |
| Shimeji / various desktop pets | Open source / old software | Years | long tail | No dialogue, no AI |
Takeaway: it's not that there's no competition, it's that at least 10 same-title projects under the same IP surfaced within a single week. lachy doesn't have the most stars (mochiiwuff has more), but judging by downloads, Discord, and TikTok views, it probably reached the most ordinary fans.
Growth channels
- The author's own TikTok (confirmed): @lachysdev has posted 16 Capri videos since 10-24, about 8M views in total. Every one is live footage of her messing with my desktop (deleting System32 as a joke, acting as a streamer, joining Discord calls), all captioned "free in my bio" + #cyberpunk #capri #edgerunners #desktopmate. The GitHub daily peak (10-28) and the 1.66M-view video landed on the same day.
- Riding the original request post (confirmed): the first video directly tagged @jpartnma_, the README credits "Inspired by jpartnma_'s TikTok video", catching traffic from that 279k-view "who's going to build this" request; another video reads "idea by @bigshrimpin7", treating a viewer's idea as source material.
- IP heat / timing (confirmed): the show 10-20 launched, and 4 days later a downloadable version existed; during the same period r/Edgerunners on Reddit had several Capri desktop pet posts a day, and people searching "Capri desktop mate" were all looking for it.
- Discord community (confirmed): every video shouts "Join the discord", now 14k members; it's used for support (Windows SmartScreen / antivirus false positives), collecting requests, and recruiting mod and VR contributors.
- Secondary spread (partly confirmed): on Instagram someone reposted "Free … Capri desktop AI lachydotmcg.github.io"; TikTok auto-generated topic pages "Lachydotmcg Github Io Capri Desktop" and "How to Get Capri Desktop Mate", suggesting people are making tutorials. Media coverage mostly names the sigmasheron and mochiiwuff versions; I didn't find any covering lachy's.
- Trust and branding (confirmed): from 11-04 it moved to the capriai.app domain, emphasizing "zero telemetry, fully open source, only these two download sources", responding to the security doubts raised by the name-squatting repos.
- No ad buying found; local X corpus has no related discussion (x-radar 30 days, 0 posts).
Why it took off
- Timing: the show had just aired and the character was hot; the demand was spelled out in a TikTok, and 13 hours later he had a version to download, one of the earliest among the same-title projects.
- Distribution through the author's own TikTok: other same-title projects relied on Reddit posts or GitHub; lachy made short videos and showed up where the users are. 6 videos broke 600k views.
- The product itself is made for filming: sitting on your window, being dragged around and waved, dancing to music, joining Discord to talk for you, "deleting System32". Every feature is a short video.
- Very fast iteration + listening to comments: 13 versions in 26 days, 1,000+ commits (the commit messages look AI-written), "I'll add whatever you say in the comments", a teaser "Linux tomorrow", turning viewers into people who keep coming back.
- Low barrier: one Setup.exe, click "Free key" to use the free NVIDIA endpoint, no need to understand API keys; it can also run locally.
Differentiation
Compared with same-title open-source projects: it's a finished product aimed at fans (installer, free key, voice, animation, Discord support, TikTok tutorials), not a demo aimed at developers; mochiiwuff pitches Claude Code narration and attracts programmers' stars. Compared with Steam's Desktop Mate: it's free, has an LLM, and can operate your computer, but it's unofficial. This differentiation is part of the reason, but distribution matters more: among 10 projects under the same IP, only this one's author is also someone who makes TikToks. Having fewer stars than mochiiwuff exactly shows the two audiences differ: one is on GitHub, the other on TikTok.
Visibility
Spreading within small circles. It's hot in the TikTok anime/cyberpunk crowd (the author's single videos reached 1M+ views, about 8M in total), but media coverage mainly names other same-name projects; I found no X big accounts or tech media writing about it. No revenue (free, no paywall; 11-05's commits mention using the author's own Claude key to hand out giveaway codes).
Copycats
Yes, and plenty: see the competitor table. ChannelCooperStart/capri-ai, boardshogunfluctuate/Capri-AI and capri-com/Capri-AI are new single-repo accounts with near-identical names and bios, suspected of name-squatting (malice unverified); a SourceForge mirror and the Microsoft Store "Project Capri" are also same-title.
What others can borrow
- Watch for requests of the form "hot new show/game character × some software format"; ship a downloadable version within 24 hours and catch the traffic of the original post's author.
- The developer makes their own TikToks: each new feature becomes a 15-second "look what she did now", pinned "free in my bio", backed by a Discord to catch the traffic.
- Flatten the barrier for non-technical users: one-click install, a free model key, proactively explaining antivirus false positives, and an owned domain to prevent name-squatting.
- Daily shipping with AI-assisted coding, and community contributions (mods, VR) let the ecosystem grow on its own.
Uncertain
- Download counts include automatic upgrade re-downloads; real install count unknown (the official site says 49.1K, basis unclear).
- The official site shows ⭐812, which doesn't match GitHub's 408 that day; the cause is unverified (possibly a different counting method or cache).
- Heat depends on one show; how much retention remains after the show cools is unknown. The rights holders CD PROJEKT RED/Netflix's stance is unknown (the README has an unofficial disclaimer), so there's takedown risk.
- Whether the name-squatting repos are malicious is unverified; I didn't closely review which of the Reddit posts (403 couldn't be read) were promoting lachy's version.
