新 iPhone 发布 3 天后,一个找工作的开发者把它的状态图标搬上了 Mac:Status Trio 怎么从一堆同款里拿到 1600 star
What it is A free, open-source Mac utility that merges Wi-Fi, battery, and volume into a single iPhone Duo-style icon, placed in the menu bar or Dock to free up space on a crowded notch-screen menu bar.
Why it took off It shipped 3 days after the event, with "same as iPhone Duo" in the title. On day one the author pitched it to Ruan Yifeng's weekly and V2EX, and Chinese news accounts passed it along layer by layer. Over the next two months, using AI coding, it shipped 22 releases, got into Homebrew, and pulled ahead of the same-day clones.
CHow you could follow it Don't build another Duo menu bar app. There are already five or six copies. Copy the playbook instead: within 72 hours of the next big-company design launch, port it to another platform, pitch the Chinese weekly, V2EX, and English r/macapps on day one, then ship a shareable new version every week.

At the September event Apple unveiled the foldable iPhone Duo, which merged Wi-Fi, signal, and battery into one icon. Within three days at least two "ported to Mac menu bar" projects appeared on GitHub, and five or six more followed. The idea was obvious to everyone. In the end, the one who broke out was a person who said they were "job-hunting and learning AI coding," and his stars were more than four times the runner-up's. What's worth learning isn't the idea. It's what he did over the next two months.
A submission: "The main benefit is that it reduces the space taken by 2 menubar icons"
At 11:30 p.m. Beijing time on 13 2026, GitHub user lingyired opened an issue in Ruan Yifeng's Tech Enthusiast Weekly repo, titled "[Open-source pitch] Status Trio: bringing iPhone Duo's three-in-one status icon to macOS." The body was short, and the most compelling lines were these:
The first time I saw iPhone Duo's three-in-one icon, it felt odd. But once I thought about how the top menu bar gets squeezed for space by the notch, it seemed like a reasonable solution. The popup features I see as secondary. The main benefit is that it reduces the space taken by 2 menubar icons.
He also attached a landing page where you can click around and preview what the icon looks like at different battery levels, signal strengths, and volumes. The same day, he posted on V2EX as well.
Issue 413 of the 18 weekly came out, with Status Trio listed as item 9. The blurb was basically the line he wrote himself: "A three-in-one Mac status bar icon inspired by iPhone Duo's design, integrating Wi-Fi, battery, and volume." That day the repo gained 98 stars, the peak of the first wave (daily data from Trendshift).
The author's GitHub bio reads "actively learning AI coding, job-hunting," with this as his only public repo and 21 followers. Many merge request branches start with codex/, suggesting most of the code was written by AI.
What it is
A native Mac utility (written in Swift) that draws three things into one icon: the outer ring is battery, the center is Wi-Fi, and the dot or arc beside it is volume (on iPhone that slot is cellular signal, which Macs don't use, so the author swapped in volume). The icon can sit in the menu bar, the Dock, or both. Clicking it opens a panel with nearby Wi-Fi networks, paired Bluetooth devices, battery details with a power-usage ranking, and audio output devices.
Free, Apache-2.0 licensed, with Apple developer signing and notarization (it opens directly after download, no need to strip quarantine in Terminal), built-in auto-update, and support for 12 languages. Install with one line: brew install --cask status-trio.
How the stars grew
| Timeline | What happened | How much it grew |
|---|---|---|
| 9-09 | iPhone Duo launches, and the three-in-one status icon becomes a talking point | — |
| 9-12 | Repo created; another developer's DuoBar launched about 9 hours earlier | — |
| 9-13 | Shipped 1.0, pitched to Ruan Yifeng's weekly and V2EX; the X news account OODATA reposted it | |
| 9-14 to 9-17 | Little brother Tiaotiao (@jaywcjlove) reposted twice, the second time with "v1.1 released, Dock mode supported"; Geek Lite reposted it | 9-14 +89, 9-16 +70 |
| 9-18 | Weekly issue 413 published | +98 |
| 9-20 | Recommended by the GitHubDaily WeChat Official Account | +51 |
| 9-24 to 10-18 | Plateau phase, single-digit stars per day | About 680 total |
| 10-16 | Added to the official Homebrew software repository | |
| 10-19 to 10-21 | ahhhhfs (Sister A) posted bilingual threads on X and her blog | +20, +54, +18 |
| 10-29 | Shipped 1.8: battery power flow, power-usage ranking, adjusting external display volume | |
| 10-30 to 11-03 | Second wave, source not found | +136, +199, +87, +70, +167 |
| 11-06 | Still gaining forty-some to fifty per day | 1630, 82 forks. |
(Daily figures come from Trendshift and GitHub's daily star records.)
A few indicators suggest these people actually use it, not just starring it: the installers for 22 versions have been downloaded about 41k times in total (including auto-updates, so this isn't a user count); Homebrew installs in the last 30 days were 1,070, ranking #301 among all Homebrew apps (formulae.brew.sh, 11-06); and the fork-to-star ratio is about 5%, which doesn't look inflated.
Where the second wave of a couple hundred stars a day came from, I couldn't find a big account that reposted it. The closest in timing: the 10-29 1.8 release, a few 1.9 versions posted back-to-back in early November, one or two Chinese articles titled something like "five free Mac apps," and it reaching #3 and #4 on Trendshift's Swift chart. My guess is these stacked together, plus some Xiaohongshu or WeChat Official Account repost I didn't find, unverified.
Why the rivals that started the same day fell behind
| Project | Launched | Scale | What's different |
|---|---|---|---|
| DuoBar (Mikeli7666) | 9-12, about 9 hours earlier | 369 star | Same idea, but more coverage from English, Russian, and Japanese media (r/MacOS, Habr, Switzerland's iphone-blog.ch). However, no Dock mode and not in Homebrew, and updates were slow |
| DuoBar (Teekam Suthar) | 9-21, Mac App Store | 0 rating on the US store, 3 votes on Product Hunt | Distributed through the store, shows network speed in the middle, and includes CPU and memory. Almost nobody knows about it |
| HyperDuo | 10-01 | 74 star | Chinese knockoff three weeks later |
| Three or four other DuoBar clones | Mid-September | 0–5 star | Small copycats |
| Mac-Duo (sumimakito) | 9-10 | 1,233 star | Also riding iPhone Duo, but doing a lid-close animation, not a status icon |
| Stats, iStat Menus | Years | Stats has tens of thousands of stars | System monitoring, one item per icon, the opposite direction |
| Bartender, Ice | Years | Big | Hiding the icons isn't merging them. And per badgeify's article, macOS 27 broke them all at once, so the crowded menu bar problem got worse |
Look at the first row first. Same idea, same day, and the English exposure was even better, yet stars came to only about a quarter of Status Trio's. The gap is the next two months: Status Trio shipped 22 versions and 1444 commits from Sep 13 to Nov 5, merging 120 PRs. Dock mode, Homebrew, signing and notarization, 12 languages, Bluetooth and AirPods, input method icons, global hotkeys, battery power flow, one feature after another. Each release gave the feed another reason to repost, and the second item in 小弟调调's post was literally 'supports Dock mode'.
One person, two months, this release cadence: it runs on AI coding. That's also why the author writes 'learning AI coding' in their bio. The project itself is their portfolio.
Why people want to share it
The title needs no explanation. 'Same as the iPhone Duo' is five words. Anyone who watched the launch gets it in a second, and anyone who didn't gets it from the picture.
A real pain point is holding it up. Notch MacBook menu bars are already packed, and extra icons get swallowed by the notch. The author's line 'frees up 2 icon slots' hooks people more than 'a tribute to the new iPhone' does, and gets them to install it instead of just liking it.
He used the free Chinese channels from day one. Ruan Yifeng's weekly takes open-source self-submissions, V2EX has a 'share your creation' section, and on X there's a group of Chinese accounts that specialize in Mac tools and open-source projects. Most of the first stars came from there, and the README is in Chinese and English side by side. On the English side it only showed up on small blogs, a Reddit thread, and YouTube Shorts. MacRumors, 9to5Mac, Hacker News, and Product Hunt never picked it up.
The storefront looks like a real product. A state diagram, a live preview page, proper signing, and a one-line Homebrew install mostly remove the worry about installing an unknown small tool.
If it were you
The verdict: the Mac 'iPhone Duo combo icon' niche is already taken by Status Trio, with at least five or six clones, so building another one is pointless. Windows and the main Linux desktops already put Wi-Fi, volume, and battery behind a single button, so moving it to another platform solves no real pain. What you can take is its playbook, not the project.
Who it's for: developers who write code with AI and want an open-source project worth showing as a portfolio piece, especially people who know the Apple ecosystem and can ship within days of an event.
Who it's not for: anyone planning to build 'yet another Duo menu bar' now, or anyone who will ship one version, write a README, and wait for stars. DuoBar is the counterexample.
How to do it:
- Wait for the next 'new design': whenever Apple (or Google, or Microsoft) launches new hardware or a new OS, there's usually one or two new visual or interaction ideas. Port it to another platform or scenario within 72 hours of launch and title it 'X, same as Y'. The condition is that it solves a real problem in the new place too, like the cramped menu bar.
- Submit on day one: self-submit to Ruan Yifeng's weekly issues, share on V2EX, and tag a few Chinese X accounts that cover Mac tools. Copy the approach: one sentence on what it is, one on why it's useful, a screenshot, and a live page to try. On the English side the equivalents are r/MacOS, r/macapps, and Show HN. Status Trio never really worked those, so there's room there.
- Then keep the updates coming: attention lasts about a week. After that it depends on shipping every week, giving each release one new feature people will repost, and writing release notes in both languages. Get on Homebrew early and do signing and notarization, so 'let me just install this' has no friction.
When is 'before': this iPhone Duo wave has already passed. The next window is Apple's next launch event, and it depends on whether a new design shows up that can be moved somewhere else.
What would show you read it wrong: ① After the next launch, several 'X, same as Y' tools appear and none pass 500 stars. That would mean Status Trio's breakout mostly rode the iPhone Duo buzz and can't be copied. ② Status Trio still has no new growth wave in mid-November, past day 60, or after possibly landing on GitHub's official trending. That would mean its traffic came mostly from one-time reposts in the Chinese community, and that continuous updates don't drive much. ③ Apple ships a merged status icon in macOS itself, and the category disappears.

One line
The iPhone Duo (Apple's first foldable, launched 2026-09-09) brought a new design: merging Wi-Fi, cellular, and battery into one status icon. Three days later, an indie developer in China who was job hunting and learning AI coding brought it to the Mac menu bar (volume replacing cellular). Riding the 'new device design + cramped notch menu bar' pain point, plus submission channels in the Chinese developer community (Ruan Yifeng's weekly, V2EX, 小弟调调, OODATA, ahhhhfs), it earned its first wave of stars. Over the next two months it iterated hard with AI (Codex): 56 commits and 22 releases in 1444 days, got listed in the official Homebrew Cask, added Dock mode, Bluetooth, battery power flow, and more, leaving 5+ similar projects behind. The second surge in late October has no verified source.
1. What it is
- A native macOS app (SwiftUI + AppKit) that merges battery (outer ring), Wi-Fi (center icon), and volume (dot or arc) into one icon, which can go in the menu bar, the Dock, or both. Clicking it opens panels for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, battery details, audio devices, and more. Free, Apache-2.0, with Developer ID signing and notarization, Sparkle auto-updates, and 12 languages. There's also a landing page, statustrio.lingai.net, for previewing every icon state online. (Source: README)
- Author lingyired: the GitHub bio reads 'actively learning AI coding, job hunting', 21 followers, and this is their only public repo (GitHub API). Many PR branch names are
codex/..., suggesting development relies mainly on AI coding tools like Codex (GitHub PR list).
II. Growth data
- Daily star gains (source Trendshift, UTC days):
- First wave 9/13–9/23:9/14 +89,9/16 +70,9/17 +58,9/18 +98,9/20 +51,10 days, about 500 stars.
- Plateau 9/24–10/18: single digits per day.
- Small wave 10/19–10/21: +20, +54, +18.
- Second wave 10/30–11/3: +136, +199, +87, +70, +167. Afterward 40–80 per day.
- Our GitHub repo profile (repo_profile): gain_7d=792, prev_7d=44, max_day_gain 211 (11-01). suspect is empty, fork/star about 5%, which doesn't look inflated.
- Downloads: release assets across 22 releases total about 40,900 downloads. That figure includes Sparkle auto-updates, so it isn't a count of unique users. The v1.8.0 dmg alone has 9,746 downloads (GitHub API, 11-06). The official Homebrew cask had 1,070 installs in the last 30 days, ranked #301 among all casks (formulae.brew.sh analytics).
- Release pace: 9/13 v1.0.0 to 11/5 v1.9.3, 22 releases total, 1444 commits, 120 PRs merged (Trendshift / GitHub API).
3. Competitors (doing the same thing)
| Name | Where | Launched | Scale | How it differs from Status Trio |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mikeli7666/DuoBar | Open source | 2026-09-12 (about 9 hours before Status Trio) | 369 stars / 22 forks; has an r/MacOS post (9/15), and coverage on Habr, iphone-blog.ch, AAPL Ch. | Same idea, same starting day, and better coverage in English, Russian, and Japanese media. The gap is in follow-up iteration and Chinese-community promotion: Status Trio added Dock mode, Homebrew, 12 languages, and deeper panels |
| DuoBar(Teekam Suthar) | Mac App Store + official website | 2026-09-21 | Free, US store, rated 0; 9/26 was on Product Hunt and got only 3 votes | Took the store route, shows network traffic in the menu bar, plus CPU/memory/disk; almost no buzz |
| yixing233/HyperDuo | Open source | 2026-10-01 | 74 star | Clones from 3 weeks ago, in Chinese |
| hummusaki/DuoBar, elovria/DuoBar, Mujh05/DuoBar and others | Open source | Mid-September onward | 0–5 star | Small remake |
| 34306/DuoBar, SorenNing/DuoBar | Jailbreak iOS tweak | September | 67 stars, etc. | Was for old iPhones, not Mac |
| iStat Menus, Stats (exelban) | Paid / open source | Years | Stats has tens of thousands of stars | A system monitor that gives each item its own icon, not a "merged icon" |
| Bartender / Ice / macOS 27 native overflow button | Paid / open source / system | Years; macOS 27 is 2026-06 | Big | They hide the icons; Status Trio merges them. Per badgeify, macOS 27 broke Bartender and Ice across the board, so the menu bar overcrowding pain is sharper than ever. |
| sumimakito/Mac-Duo and other "fold animation" projects | Open source | 2026-09-10 | 1,233 star | Also riding the iPhone Duo wave, but doing a lid-close animation, a different direction. Shows that "bringing the iPhone Duo to Mac" was a theme in itself |
Takeaway: lots of competitors, and they launched almost at the same time (two on day 9/12), so the idea itself isn't a moat. Status Trio has the most stars in this category, 4.5× the second-place DuoBar.
4. Where the users came from (evidence)
- A hot topic from the new iPhone design: the iPhone Duo launched 9/9, and merging status icons was itself a talking point, with AppleMagazine, Instagram and X @avstorm 9/9 as proof. The repo was created 9/12, and 9/13 shipped v1.0.
- The author pitched it in Chinese developer circles, confirmed:
- 9/13 V2EX post.
- 9/13 submitted to Ruan Yifeng's weekly issue #11670, included in issue 413 (released 9/18, item 9). That day +98 stars, the peak of the first wave.
- Bilibili creator "灵亦rEd" posted a demo video, about 1,115 views (Bilibili search results).
- Chinese news accounts and big X accounts reposted it, confirmed:
- OODATA/@o0data 9/13, plus its r/ooapps and Telegram channel.
- 小弟调调 @jaywcjlove 9/14 and 9/17 reposts (he also reposted DuoBar).
- Geek Lite @QingQ77 9/16.
- GitHubDaily WeChat Official Account 9/20.
- ahhhhfs/A姐 @abskoop 10/19 bilingual posts plus a blog, lining up with the small wave on 10/19–10/21.
- There were also reposts on Chinese sites like zendot, mac52ipod, 电玩帮, SHAO MEDIA, 格律诗, show1show and others.
- English circles: swiftuisnippets (9/17), listed on macmenubar.app, listed in awesome-mac, a YouTube intro video and Shorts. On r/MacOS there were posts like "Loved the iPhone Duo's 3-in-1 status indicator so I put it on my Mac" and "I moved the iPhone Duo 3-in-1 status bar to my Mac — 1.3.2 update". Reddit blocks scraping, so I couldn't confirm whether the author posted them.
- Homebrew official cask: 10/16 listed (homebrew-cask submission), 30 installs in the last 1,070 days. This is an ongoing distribution channel, not reliant on one-off buzz.
- 10/30–11/3 Wave two: source not confirmed. The timing matches a few things: v1.8.0 from 10/29 (battery power flow, energy-usage list, BetterDisplay external-display volume, instant full charge) and the 1.9.x releases shipped 11/2–11/5; a zl.cn article, "Five Free Mac Apps" by 10/31 92; and a listing on 神器阁 11/4. None of that explains 100–200 stars a day. We found nothing on HN, Product Hunt, or in our X library (x-radar). The guess is a big X, RedNote, or WeChat Official Account account repost, or organic traffic from the Trendshift Swift chart (ranked #4,11/3, then #3 over 10/30–31). Unverified. GitHub's official trending only admits repos that are about 60 days old, and this one reaches 60 days on 11/11, so another trending wave could come in mid-November.
V. Why it took off
- Timing: once Apple's new visual language for its phones came out, "bring it to Mac" was ready-made talk. The "iPhone Duo-style" title needs no explanation to spread. The repo was created 9/12, just 3 days after the launch event.
- Real pain point: the notched MacBook menu bar is crowded. In the author's pitch he said, "mainly it reduces the spot taken by 2 menu bar icons." macOS 27 also broke Bartender and Ice, and merging icons offered another fix.
- Used free Chinese distribution channels: the author pitched Ruan Yifeng's weekly and V2EX himself on day one, and Chinese news accounts then reposted it layer by layer. The first wave of stars came mostly from the Chinese community, and the README leading with Chinese plus multilingual support points the same way.
- Execution beats the rest: DuoBar started the same day and got more English media exposure, but has only about 1/4.5 of this one's stars. Status Trio shipped 22 versions in two months of AI-assisted coding: Dock mode (v1.1,9/16), Homebrew, signing and notarization plus Sparkle, 12 languages, Bluetooth/AirPods, input method icon, global hotkey, battery power flow. Each release gave people another reason to repost, e.g. 小弟调调 specifically reposted "v1.1 released, Dock mode supported".
- Good front door: the README has a status-bar preview, multilingual versions, an online simulator landing page, and proper signing (no need to strip quarantine attributes yourself). That lowers the barrier of "installing an unknown small tool."
VI. Differentiation
- Versus Bartender and Ice, which hide icons: this one merges them. Versus iStat Menus and Stats: it covers only three always-on system stats, in one nice icon.
- Versus the DuoBar clones with the same idea: the idea is the same, the difference is polish and shipping completeness: Dock mode, official Homebrew cask, signing and notarization, multiple languages, deep panels, frequent updates. That difference is what made it take off, not the idea itself. The idea got every clone the first-wave attention; only this one turned attention into sustained growth.
7. Visibility and copycats
- Visibility: spreading in small circles. Chinese Mac and developer circles (Ruan Yifeng's weekly, V2EX, several Chinese X news accounts) have reposted it widely. In English there are only small sites and Reddit posts, no MacRumors or 9to5Mac-tier outlets, and no HN or PH. Free and open source, so no revenue involved.
- Copycats: lots. At least 5 open-source repos on the same theme (DuoBar ×N, HyperDuo) and 1 Mac App Store apps (DuoBar by Teekam Suthar). There are also several forks or re-uploads copying the README, e.g. MrYouYouSBK/MacStatus-trio.
VIII. What to take from it
- Within 72 hours of Apple (or any big company) releasing a new interaction or visual design, port it to another platform and title it "X-style."
- Self-promotion in Chinese developer channels costs almost nothing and works: Ruan Yifeng's weekly submissions, V2EX "share your creation," @-mentioning 小弟调调, and news accounts like OODATA.
- High-frequency releases with AI-assisted coding, bilingual release notes every time, plus Homebrew cask, signing and notarization and an online preview page, turning a one-off hot spot into a product that keeps getting distributed.
9. Uncertain
- The specific source of the 10/30–11/3 second wave was not found, and the Reddit posts could not be scraped.
- Download counts include auto-updates; active users are unknown.
- How much traffic the "Duo-style" label keeps once iPhone Duo hype fades.
- Whether the author, who is job hunting, keeps maintaining the project.
