# One person, 15 days, 700 stars: Reveric connects "novel writing" and "AI short drama" into one pipeline, but you can't borrow its head start

**What it is** A desktop AI creation tool: write novels, revise scripts, break down storyboards, generate video and edit the final cut, all in one app. The AI can read your entire work and find settings on its own, and it uses your own model keys.

**Why it took off** The author's earlier open source gateway axonhub has 5.4k stars, so the old community showed up right away. It also hit the hottest topic, AI short drama, pitching "no more pasting character bios into the chat box". Within a week, GitHubDaily, WeChat Official Accounts and Zhihu all covered it.

**C** **How you could follow** Don't build another Chinese "novel to short drama, end to end" product. It's more worthwhile to do an English version (nobody in the English scene has noticed it yet), or to build just the piece it does poorly (video channel integration, character consistency, 3D blocking) as a small library or Claude Code skill, then launch in the same order: old community, X, newsletter submissions, big accounts, WeChat Official Accounts.

Grade C: the launch playbook and the method of "connecting two adjacent hot categories" are worth learning. But both AI short drama and novel writing have top projects with tens of thousands of stars. Reveric's cold start relied on an old project's reputation that followers don't have, so copying it to chase the same stars is a bad bet. The English version route has potential but is unverified. Reveric (Chinese name 幻界) is a locally run desktop app. It starts with writing long-form novels and goes all the way to scripts, storyboards, video generation and final editing, with an AI agent able to take over each step. The author looplj built it alone. The repo was created in Oct 22, and in 15 days it grew to about 700 stars, the fastest growth among AI creation open source projects created in the last month and a half. But it rests on two premises: the author already had a 5.4k-star old project, and it entered one of the most crowded categories in the Chinese open source scene over the past 2026 years.

### Oct 24 afternoon post

2026 Oct 24 14:57 (Beijing time), looplj posted in the Open Source Promotion section of LINUX DO: "Shared an Agent Native all-in-one workbench for novel and short drama creation that I've been grinding on lately." The body lists seven capabilities and explains the why: "Existing script writing and short drama production tools are mostly separate projects; this one integrates both"; "Many projects are split into frontend and backend, and web deployment is a hassle; this one just downloads and installs." He doesn't hide the weak spot either: the video channels are fragmented, currently mainly connected through a few Seedance relay services, which are "pretty expensive."

The first reply came a minute later: "Holy, this looks pretty good." Within half an hour, a dozen or so "mark" replies followed. Just after 5 p.m., one user wrote the key line: "Big shot dropped another new open-source project, support it." The thread ended with 1,295 views, 144 likes, and 51 replies (LINUX DO, 11-06).

"Another" refers to axonhub, an open-source AI gateway written in Go that looplj made earlier, with 5.4k stars and a group of long-time users in this community. Reveric's first few dozen stars (10-25 now has 44) mostly came from this group.

### What it actually does

In one line: your whole work becomes the agent's workspace.

- **Upstream is the novel** : a tree-structured outline, worldbuilding settings, a character relationship graph, and chapter version history. Say "write chapter three," and the agent looks up the first two chapters itself, checks who is opposed to whom, and finds the earlier foreshadowing, so you don't have to paste character bios into the chat one paragraph at a time.

- **Downstream is the finished cut** : script adaptation, an infinite canvas storyboard (reference images linked by connectors), a "3D director's stage" (lay out character positions and actions first, then have the video model generate to match), and a 6-track editing bench.

- **Bring your own models (BYOK)** : text connects to OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini, DeepSeek, and domestic providers; image connects to Seedream, Wan, GPT Image, Nano Banana; video connects to Seedance 2.x, Wan, Hailuo MiniMax H3, and Kling. It can also connect to self-hosted gateways like OneAPI and NewAPI.

- **Local first** : written in Flutter, data stored in local SQLite, with installers for macOS, Windows, and Android. Open source under AGPL-3.0, with a commercial licensing email in the README.

One LINUX DO comment said "Dart? That's rare." The author replied: "In this day and age, what language you use doesn't really matter, nobody reads it anyway." A large share of this project's code was, by inference, written by the author with AI. In 15 days he shipped 10 releases, and the commits are almost all his (looplj 108, others 4; GitHub, 11-06).

### How the stars grew

| Timeline | What happened | Star count at the time |
|---|---|---|
| 10-24 | LINUX DO debut, old users recognized the author | 10-25:44 |
| 10-27 | The author posted on his own X: "Over 100 stars in three days since open-sourcing"; the same day he submitted a self-recommendation to Ruan Yifeng's Weekly | 10-26 to 10-28 averaging +35 to +52 per day |
| 10-29 | The Chinese open-source account GitHubDaily recommended it on X, 14.8K views | 182 |
| 10-30 morning 7:26 | The WeChat Official Account "Open Source Scout" published "Open-sourced only 8 days ago and it blew up! This AI creation workbench covers everything from writing novels to editing the final cut!", which several blog aggregators reposted | 10-30 +98,10-31 +149 (peak) |
| later | Zhihu column post (date unverified); 11-04 X account recommendation; listed on an AI short-drama tool directory site | +25 to +49,11-06 per day, up to 672 |

Star counts are logged daily (from 10-25); another GitHub page reading on 11-06 showed 697 stars and 170 forks.

The opening of that WeChat article named the exact pain point the product sells: "You've written 200,000 words of a novel, and to get AI to polish one chapter, you have to paste the character bios, worldbuilding settings, and earlier plot into the chat one piece at a time." Every later rewrite (GitHubDaily, Zhihu) makes the same point: you don't have to feed it prompts, it looks things up itself.

Two things stand out. First, in one week it ran through the whole Chinese open-source distribution chain: the old community, the author's own X, newsletter submission, GitHubDaily, WeChat, Zhihu, navigation sites. The star peak lines up with the WeChat article's timing. Second, the English-speaking world hasn't noticed it yet: over the last ~30 days it doesn't show up in English X search, it hasn't been on Hacker News, and it hasn't been on Product Hunt, even though it already has an English README.

People are actually installing it. The installers across 10 releases have been downloaded roughly 2,800 times in total; the fork-to-star ratio is about 24%, which is high for a new project. In Nov 1 a QQ group was set up, and a search snapshot showed 29 members.

### Who it's competing with

| Project | Launched | Scale | How it differs from Reveric |
|---|---|---|---|
| Toonflow-app | About 2026-01 | 20.8K stars, +874 in 7 days | Focused on short dramas and comic dramas, with an infinite canvas and an agent; no long-form novel writing |
| Huobao Drama huobao-drama | About 2026-01 | 17.0k stars | Generates a full short drama from one sentence, no fine-grained editing |
| waoowaoo | About 2026-01 | 14.8k stars | A web platform for teams, needs deployment |
| inkos | About 2026-03 | 11.0k stars | Only novel and script writing agents |
| webnovel-writer, oh-story-claudecode, etc. | 2025–2026 | Up to 8.3k stars | Web-novel writing skills running inside Claude Code, no interface, no video |
| dramaclaw, Jellyfish, LocalMiniDrama, Alibaba lumenx, etc. | 2025-12 to 2026-10 | 1.4k to 7k stars | A script-to-finished-video pipeline, with no novel upstream |

(GitHub, 11-06.) On the closed-source side there are also Jimeng, Kling, LibTV, Tiangong short-drama workbench, and a pile of AI comic-drama SaaS products.

The table makes it clear: "open-source AI short drama tools" and "open-source AI web-novel writing tools" each already have projects with tens of thousands of stars, and both launched more than half a year before Reveric. The gap Reveric found is connecting those two categories and packaging them as a desktop app you can download and use. That gap gives it a good headline, but 700 versus 20k doesn't show that it can pull the top users away.

### If it were you

**Verdict:** Learn its launch playbook and its topic method of "chaining two adjacent hot categories into one line"; don't build yet another Chinese open-source "novel-to-short-drama all-in-one." The leaders in this lane are already at twenty thousand stars, and even with the author's old reputation, Reveric only got 700.

**Who it suits:** People who already have a project with a few thousand stars, or who have a group of long-time readers in some developer community; people who understand AI video generation, actually make short dramas or write web novels, and know which step in the workflow hurts most; Chinese developers who want to build for the English ecosystem.

**Who it doesn't suit:** People doing open source for the first time with no existing users. Reveric's cold-start stars came from axonhub's old fans, which you don't have. Also anyone wanting to build a big all-in-one platform and compete head-on with Toonflow or Huobao on features.

**How to do it:** three paths, ranked by how worth it they are:

1. **Build an English version of "novel to finished video."** Reveric still isn't showing up in English X search, and open-source all-in-one tools of this kind look scarce in the English ecosystem (inference, not checked one by one). Wire up Kling, Veo, and Seedance's international channels, and aim at authors serializing on Wattpad and Royal Road and at people making YouTube Shorts.

2. **Build only the piece it does poorly.** The author himself says the video channels are fragmented and hard to connect one by one. The 3D director's stage, cross-shot character consistency, and long-form continuity checks, packaged as a small library or Claude Code skill that other short-drama tools can call, are easier to get stars for than a full suite.

3. **Change the format.** The hottest thing on the web-novel writing side is Claude Code skills (8k-star level). A "short drama storyboard / comic drama" skill pack has a low barrier and spreads fast.

**How to get users:** follow its sequence. Debut first in your own old community (places like LINUX DO with an "Open Source Promotion" section), post progress on X the same day, submit to Ruan Yifeng's weekly the same day, aim for a big account like GitHubDaily to repost, then wait for a WeChat rewrite to push you to the peak. Put the latest video model names in the repo tags (Reveric uses seedance and minimax-h3) to catch search traffic from model launches. For an English version, switch to Show HN, r/LocalLLaMA, r/selfhosted, and a short demo video.

**When to move:** the next few months, while video model prices are still falling and AI short dramas are still hot. Leading projects are still gaining hundreds to thousands of stars a week, so demand is there; but every extra month, the open slots shrink.

**What would mean you read it wrong:** ① Reveric gains more than 3,000 stars in a month without any new promotion, which would mean the "all-in-one" pitch itself has buyers and the Chinese lane is still open; ② Toonflow and Huobao drop below a hundred stars a week from their December peaks, which would mean the AI short-drama open-source wave is cooling; ③ a "novel to drama" open-source project in English gains a thousand-plus stars within a month, which would mean someone already got there first on the English side.

## looplj/reveric (Reveric | 幻界): why it took off

> Channel: GitHub. Research date 2026-11-06. Figures without a stated source come from the GitHub API (queried live on 2026-11-06) or our github database (repo_profile / repo_day).

### Bottom line

An indie developer who had already built axonhub, an AI gateway with 5.4k stars, merged two of the hottest tracks right now, "AI short drama / comic drama" and "AI-written long-form web fiction," into one local-first, BYOK, agent-driven desktop app (Flutter/Dart). The launch followed the standard playbook of Chinese developer circles: first posted on LINUX DO, self-promoted on X, submitted to Ruan Yifeng's weekly newsletter, then picked up by GitHubDaily, the WeChat account "Open Source Scout," and Zhihu. It reached about 700 stars in 15 days, the fastest growth among newly created creative-tool repos in the past 45 days. Still, it is small in the wider category: the leading open-source rivals sit at 1–20k stars.

### What it is

- A local-first desktop creation workspace (data stored in local SQLite), shipped for macOS, Windows, and Android. A project starts with a novel, then moves through script adaptation, an infinite-canvas storyboard, a 3D director stage, and a 6-track editor, all the way to a finished video. The selling point is "Agent Native": nearly anything you can do in the UI, the agent can do too. The agent can also pull settings and chapters from the whole project on demand and run continuity checks.

- Bring your own models (BYOK): text supports OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini, DeepSeek and Chinese providers; image supports Seedream, Wan, GPT Image, and Nano Banana; video supports Seedance 2.x, Wan, Hailuo / MiniMax H3, and Kling. It can also connect to self-hosted gateways such as AxonHub, OneAPI, and NewAPI. (README)

- Licensed under AGPL-3.0, with a contact email for commercial licensing in the README. Website: reveric.app.

### Growth data

- Created 2026-10-22, 11-06 has 697 stars and 170 forks. The fork-to-star ratio is about 24%, which runs high for a new repo. Our data card: +392 over the last 7 days, with a single-day peak of +149 (10-31).

- Daily star counts logged in our database (repo_day): 10-25 44 → 10-26 96 → 10-27 131 → 10-28 165 → 10-29 182 → 10-30 280 → 10-31 429 → 11-01 479 → 11-03 550 → 11-05 624 → 11-06 672.

- Release downloads: about 2,800 in total across v0.2.0 through v0.8.0 (summed per-version asset download counts from the GitHub API). In 15 days it shipped 10 versions and 112 pages of commits (per_page=1 pagination), almost all written by one person (looplj 108 / others 4).

- QQ discussion group created 924148054,11-01; search snapshot shows 29 members.

### How it makes money

- The product itself is free and open source. Two weeks after launch, two sponsors were already pinned at the top of the README, both with referral or channel links: **88API** (a token aggregation platform, aff=5q8X) and **Metaso's MiniMax H3 video generation API** (a Reveric-specific ?s=Reveric link, priced at ¥768 0.09 per second).

- The logic: the product is BYOK, so users must buy their own text, image, and video model credits. Video generation is the biggest cost, so API resellers are willing to sponsor to drive signups. The author's earlier project, axonhub, is itself an AI gateway, so he understands the "route traffic to API providers" monetization path well. The AGPL plus commercial license also leaves a way to charge B2B customers.

- No public revenue or sponsorship amounts found.

### Competitors

The category is crowded. Our github database search for "short drama / comic drama / novel writing" returns:

| Competitors | Form | Launched | Scale | How it differs from Reveric |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| HBAI-Ltd/Toonflow-app | Open source (Vue, web/desktop) | About 2026-01 (age 281 days) | 20.8K stars, +874 in 7 days | Built for short dramas and comic dramas, with an infinite canvas and an agent; no long-form novel writing module |
| chatfire-AI/huobao-drama Huobao Drama | Open-source platform | About 2026-01 | 17.0k stars | Focused on "one sentence generates an entire short drama"; highly automated, no novel writing or detailed editing |
| waooAI/waoowaoo | Open source | About 2026-01 | 14.8k stars | Industrial-grade film production platform for teams, geared toward web-service deployment |
| Narcooo/inkos | Open source | About 2026-03 | 11.0k stars | Novel and script writing agent; does not produce finished video |
| dramaclaw, Jellyfish, LocalMiniDrama, BigBanana, alibaba/lumenx, ai-fusion-video, aipdd-drama-agent, OpenCinema and others | Open source | 2025-12 to 2026-10 | 0.15k to 7k stars | Mostly "script to finished video" pipelines; most lack long-form novel writing and a 3D director stage. lumenx is from Alibaba. |
| webnovel-writer, oh-story-claudecode, chinese-novelist-skill, AI-Novel-Writing-Assistant, Pagekin, OpenFic, easy-writing | Open source (mostly Claude Code skills, or Electron desktop apps) | 2025 to 2026 | 0.8k to 8.3k stars | Web-novel writing only, no extension into video |
| Commercial products: Jimeng, Kling, LibTV, Tiangong short-drama workbench, various AI comic-drama SaaS, Bilingling AI novel writing | Web / app (big-company features) | Already there | Big | Paid, cloud-hosted data, locked-in models. Reveric is local plus BYOK. |

Among newly created repos in this category over the last 45 days, Reveric's 7-day star gain (+392) is the highest for a creative tool. The repos that grew faster are all third-party clients for Hongguo short dramas, a different kind of project that just shares keywords (github database, 2026-11-06).

### Why it took off

1. **The author has trust and a channel built in** : axonhub has 5.4k stars, the author already has a reputation on LINUX DO, and someone recognized him in the launch thread ("another open-source project from him"). The first 100+ stars during the cold start mostly came from this crowd of longtime followers.

2. **It landed in the hottest category** : in 2026 Chinese open-source circles, AI short dramas and comic dramas are among the hottest tracks. Toonflow and Huobao both passed 10k stars, and video models like Seedance 2.x and MiniMax H3 have just cut prices. The topics explicitly include seedance and minimax-h3 to ride search traffic.

3. **The positioning is "novel-to-finished-video in one pipeline"** : people who write web novels and people who make short dramas used two separate toolsets. Reveric links the novel's setting library, script, storyboard, and editing, and lets the agent read the whole project. Every write-up picks up on this point (Open Source Scout, Zhihu, and GitHubDaily all highlight "no need to paste character bios into the chat").

4. **The Chinese open-source distribution chain moved fast** : LINUX DO, the author's X, the Ruan Yifeng newsletter submission, GitHubDaily, WeChat, Zhihu, and directories all went live within a week. The star peak lines up with the WeChat article timing.

5. **Fast iteration** : 10 versions in 15 days, with commits every day. Release downloads of about 2,800 show people are actually installing it, not just starring it.

### Differentiation

- Compared with short-drama pipeline tools (Toonflow, Huobao, etc.), it adds "long-form novel writing and a setting library" upstream and "3D director stage and multi-track editing" downstream. It ships as a local desktop app rather than a web service you have to deploy.

- Compared with novel-writing tools, it goes all the way to finished video.

- "Agent Native" is already a common label in this space (Toonflow also says "AI Agent + infinite canvas"), so it's not unique to them.

- Is that why it took off? Partly. Most reposts pitch "one-stop plus an agent that reads the whole work" as the headline, so the differentiation gives people a hook to spread. But the cold start really came from the author's existing reputation and the Chinese open-source distribution chain. At 700 stars, it also shows the differentiation hasn't yet proven it can pull users away from the leaders.

### Visibility

The word in small circles: LINUX DO, GitHubDaily (14.8K views), one WeChat post, one Zhihu post, a few navigation sites. No public revenue, and no English-language big account or media has covered it. 0 mentions in the x-radar corpus.

### Copycats

Haven't seen anyone directly copying it. But there are many similar open-source projects in "novel/script to short drama, infinite canvas plus Agent," and they all came earlier (see the competitor table).

### Takeaways

- Developers with an older project launching something new: debut in their old community first, then roll out in this order: X, newsletter submissions, big-account reposts, WeChat Official Accounts.

- A BYOK tool can monetize from its first week by routing traffic to API resellers for sponsorships and commissions.

- Name the latest hot models in the topics and README (seedance, minimax-h3), riding the buzz from model launches and search traffic.

- When picking the product, chain two adjacent hot categories (web novel writing + AI short drama) into one workflow and tell the "one-stop" story.

### Uncertain

- The Zhihu post's publish date and view count aren't verified. Whether other WeChat Official Accounts, Xiaohongshu, or Bilibili videos drove the 10-31 peak is also unverified.

- Actual active users, retention, and sponsorship amounts are unknown.

- The star source breakdown (stargazer details) wasn't retrieved this time because API permissions weren't sufficient.
