Promoted it on its own for 10 days and got only 20 stars. A 18-second video brought 180 in three days: LordOS and the old business of "Linux that looks like macOS"
What it is A free Debian-based Linux distro with its own desktop, display server, and apps, styled like macOS, with a built-in firewall that shows which app sends data where.
Why it blew up Developer influencer @rammcodes posted a 18-second video on 10-29, framing it as "free macOS-style Linux where you can install Claude Code / Cursor / Codex from the store." Repost accounts on Instagram and Facebook spread it further, and ZDNet later published a review.
CHow you could follow Stop building Mac-style distros. Copy the distribution playbook instead: attach AI buzzwords to an old theme, prepare 15–20-second screen recordings and numeric selling points, and pitch content accounts that hunt for clips daily. Don't count on Reddit alone.
- Data (updated daily) · Repo created 2026-10-18 · 424 stars · 7 days +143
GitHub · stars Data 2026-10-24 → 2026-11-08 (16 days, 16 observations). Points before 10-28 come from deeply / archive backfill, not every day has one
Two people in Argentina who build call-center software wrote a Linux desktop from scratch that looks like macOS, with 893 commits over 19 days. They promoted it on Reddit and LinkedIn for 10 days, and the repo only reached 20+ stars. Then a developer influencer posted a 18-second video saying it "can install Claude Code," and it added 146 stars in a single day three days later. What's worth studying is how it got seen, not what it does.
One video, one line: "AI gangster"
2026 Oct 29 16:51 (UTC), Ram Maheshwari (@rammcodes, whose bio says 500k+ followers across platforms) posted a 18-second screen recording on X:
Wait Bruh... we finally have a macOS-inspired Linux distro 💀🔥 …… It even has AI coding tools like Claude Code, Cursor, and Codex CLI available through its app store. If you're a developer, vibe-coder, or AI gangster... you gotta save this :)
The same video went to Threads and Instagram Reels that day. As of 11-06, the X post has 11.1k views, 198 likes, and 177 bookmarks. Bookmarks are close to likes, which suggests many people saved it to "install later." A reply below put it plainly: "The desktop runs a React UI engine and looks great in the screenshots, but memory use on older laptops is what decides whether people keep it." (@whodeven, 432 views)
Note that the post barely mentions the technology. It sells just two things: looks like a Mac, and can install AI coding tools. That's how a Linux distro became AI-circle content.
What it is
LordOS is a free distro based on Debian 13 (MIT license), built by Federico Pereira (lordbasex on GitHub) and Pablo Miranda of iPERFEX, a small Argentine VoIP software company. It doesn't just put a Mac skin on GNOME or KDE. Instead it writes its own display server and Wayland compositor in C, runs the UI in React on QuickJS, and ships about 30 native apps. The pitch is privacy: app sandboxing, a per-app firewall, and a live world map showing where network connections come from.
ZDNet's Jack Wallen 11-04 reviewed it under the headline "Thought it was another macOS clone, then I opened its network monitor." He says the three traffic-light buttons, the About This Mac window, the Spotlight-style search and the Dock all look very Mac-like, calling it "one of the more successful Apple-interface copies."
How the stars grew
| Date | Cumulative stars (GitHub) | What happened that day |
|---|---|---|
| 10-18 | Repo created | 0.8.0-beta debut, author made 106 commits that day |
| 10-22~10-28 | about 20→23 | Author posted in r/DistroHopping and r/LinuxEnEspanol, created r/LordOS, and the company published on LinkedIn. Two Spanish and English sysadmin blogs wrote articles. |
| 10-29 | 38(+15) | @rammcodes posts video; someone on daily.dev shared the official site |
| 10-30 | 61(+23) | Continued spread |
| 10-31 | 207(+146) | Peak. Repost pages on Instagram Reels and Facebook (same line "Wait Bruh…") were spreading it |
| 11-01 | 281(+74) | Arabic and English Linux blogs publish long-form pieces |
| 11-04 | 371 | ZDNet review published |
| 11-06 | 402 / 33 fork(+18) | Fell back to a dozen-odd stars a day |
A few takeaways from this table:
- It never made GitHub Trending. The stars all came from off-platform traffic.
- The author's own 10 days of promotion brought only about 20 stars. One influencer post, and then 180+ stars in three days.
- X alone doesn't explain the peak. The main X post had 11k views, while the reply with the repo link had only 857 views. The 10-31 146 stars more likely came from Instagram Reels and Facebook repost accounts (inference, can't be verified one by one).
- Mainstream media doesn't move stars. After the ZDNet piece, it was still a dozen-odd stars a day. On GitHub, media coverage mostly lends credibility and brings little traffic.
- 33 forks, and a comment on HN says "installs fast, looks like macOS," which shows people actually installed it, not just bookmarked it.
Why this one worked
Old theme, new buzzwords. People have been making "Linux that looks like macOS" for years, and YouTube has a steady stream of "2026's most macOS-like 5 distros" videos. What's different this time is the store names: Claude Code, Cursor, Codex CLI. That put it in the pool of AI content accounts hunting daily for "Wait Bruh" clips.
Ready-made assets. The official site has 39 carousel images, the gallery claims 717 screenshots, and there's a mascot named Lumo, brand guidelines, a whitepaper, Portuguese and Spanish pages, and numbers like "465 MB of idle memory, 16-second boot" that can go straight into a headline. Creators don't have to install it themselves. The screenshots and numbers are enough to cut a video.
The technical story holds up a second round of coverage. Two people wrote the display server and the whole app suite from scratch, and it ships a firewall that shows which app sends data where. The influencer wave ran on "looks like a Mac," while long-form pieces like ZDNet's rest on this layer.
Looks like a real project. Over 19 days it shipped 0.8.0 to 0.8.8.3 several betas, with ISOs, VM images, and Raspberry Pi 5 images, and installs on Debian 13 with a single curl line. All 893 commits come from one account, with up to 154 in a single day. That pace is likely the result of heavy AI-assisted coding (inference; the author hasn't said so publicly, and none of the last 30 commits carry AI attribution).
Where it falls short
11-05, the WURK Blog published a sober source-code review and recommended "try it first in a throwaway VM." The article cites limitations the project itself has disclosed:
- The dual-boot path alongside other systems on the same disk has not been fully tested;
- Real AMD / Nvidia GPUs, laptop power management, Bluetooth, and printers are still untested. The arm64 image was released without being booted on real hardware;
- The firewall's "ask" mode isn't built yet, and ordinary Linux apps don't run in a sandbox by default;
- Accessibility features like screen readers and magnification aren't built yet. Steam isn't supported because there's no i386 multiarch;
- The "465 MB of memory" figure was measured running the live ISO in a 4 GB VM, which doesn't reflect how it performs on older laptops.
So the screenshots look great, but it's still far from everyday use. Whether the hype sticks depends on how fast these gaps get filled.
Who else is doing the same thing
| Project | Stars (GitHub, 11-06) | How it differs from LordOS |
|---|---|---|
| Omarchy(DHH / 37signals) | 46.4k | A collection of Arch + Hyprland configs for power users and keyboard-first people. LordOS is a fully custom desktop for people who want something that works out of the box. |
| WhiteSur theme, Zorin, Pear OS, and others | WhiteSur 9.4k | Mac skins on top of GNOME / KDE |
| ravynOS / helloSystem | 7.1k / 2.5k | Built on FreeBSD, chasing the Mac experience |
| Pop!_OS COSMIC | 7.0k | A newer Rust-based desktop backed by a company |
| elementary OS, Deepin | Long-established | Also a self-built desktop, but the others have teams with over a decade behind them |
| compositors like Hyprland and niri | Hyprland +1,318 in the last 7 days | they only cover the compositor / shell layer |
This category is crowded. Omarchy has 100 times as many stars as LordOS. LordOS isn't the first, and it isn't the biggest. Its stars mostly came from one viral wave, not because the category lacked builders.
If it were you
C: You can learn from it, but cloning a 'macOS-like Linux' isn't worth it. The category is already packed. LordOS's two founders put their whole custom desktop and AI-assisted coding behind it and got 400 stars and a ZDNet write-up. The effort-to-return ratio is lopsided, and half of its takeoff was luck: an account with 500k followers happened to pick it up.
Who it's for: Developers who already have a decent open-source project nobody sees. What's worth copying is how it got noticed, not the topic itself.
Who it's not for: Anyone planning another Mac-style distro or desktop theme. COSMIC, Omarchy, and elementary have teams, names, and loyal users, and you won't get any of that. Distros also need hardware support, an installer, and security updates. That's long-haul work, and two or three weeks of hype won't carry it.
How to do it: Pick an old theme and attach a current AI-world hook ("installs Claude Code / Codex," "built for vibe coders"). The project has to actually run, installable with one command. Before launch, prepare things creators can use right away: a 15–20 second screen recording, a punchy numeric claim ("465 MB", "16 seconds"), dozens of high-res screenshots, and an animated GIF at the top of the README.
How to get users: Don't expect self-promotion on Reddit to carry it. LordOS got only 20 stars from 10 days of Reddit posts. Send the recording and one-line pitch to developer content accounts like @rammcodes, the kind that hunt for material daily. Cover X, Instagram, and Threads too. Its peak most likely came from Reels and Facebook reposter accounts. Media reviews come later, as social proof, not as a way to get stars.
When it works: The "installs Claude Code / Cursor / Codex" hook is still fresh. Once every tool and every distro says it, the trick stops working. My guess (inference): only the next few months.
What would show I got it wrong: ① LordOS gains 2,000 stars in a month without a new viral push, showing natural demand in this category is bigger than I thought; ② someone repeats the playbook (old theme + AI hooks + feeding creators) and gets hundreds of stars in a day, proving the method copies and deserves a higher rating; ③ conversely, LordOS stops shipping releases by end of November and leaves issues unanswered, showing projects that take off on a single video don't retain people.

Why LordOS (lordbasex/LordOS) took off
Channel: GitHub · Research date 2026-11-06 · Data card: 2026-10-18,402 stars / 33 forks when the database was built, +7 stars in the last 341 days, single-day peak +146 (10-31)
One line
A small Argentine company that makes call center / VoIP software, iPERFEX (Federico Pereira "LordBaseX" and Pablo Miranda), built a Debian 13 distro. They wrote a display server and Wayland compositor in C, a React UI engine running on QuickJS, and about 30 native apps, styled to look like macOS. The stars took off from one developer creator's short video: Ram Maheshwari (@rammcodes, who claims 500k+ followers across platforms) packaged it on 10-29 as "finally a macOS-style Linux distro, with Claude Code / Cursor / Codex in the store." It went out on X, Threads, and Instagram Reels at once, and daily.dev had someone sharing it the same day. Then Facebook repost accounts and tech blogs in several languages followed, and 11-04 got it into ZDNet.
1. Data: what the curve shows
Source: our github database, repo_profile / repo_day (data card).
| Date | star | Daily increase | Events in the same period |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10-18 | Repo created | — | 0.8.0-beta first release; the author pushed 106 commits that day, 10-19 commits in total 154 times (GitHub API) |
| 10-24~10-28 | 20→23 | About +1/day | Small self-promotion push in Spanish-speaking communities: a launch post on r/LinuxEnEspanol, "I got tired of switching distros so I built one" on r/DistroHopping (around 10-22, Brave showing "2 weeks ago"); a self-created r/LordOS (10-23); a LinkedIn company-page announcement; 10-26 wrote articles for the bilingual Spanish/English sites administraciondesistemas.com and systemadministration.net |
| 10-29 | 38 | +15 | 16:51 UTC @rammcodes posted the X video; daily.dev user Mouad Dadda shared lordos.org (daily.dev shows 25K) |
| 10-30 | 61 | +23 | Continued momentum from the same wave |
| 10-31 | 207 | +146 | The peak. An Instagram Reel (rammcodes_, posted 10-29) and a Facebook repost page with "Wait Bruh... we finally have a macOS-inspired Linux distro" were circulating at the same time. Which one brought these 146 stars can't be verified individually. |
| 11-01 | 281 | +74 | Long-form piece on GT-NEWSTECH (an Arabic / English Linux blog) |
| 11-02~11-04 | 300→371 | +19~+43 | 11-02 repost from the X alt account @Manixh02 (485 views); 0.8.8-beta released |
| 11-05~11-06 | 384 → 402 (GitHub API, live 414) | +13~+18 | 11-04 22:00 ET it made ZDNet (Jack Wallen review); Tux Machines reposted it; 11-06 in the HN thread "The Hackintosh Reborn," someone said they tried LordOS: "installs fast, looks like macOS" |
- The data card has trending_days_any=0 and best_global_rank=null, meaning it never made GitHub Trending (the database was less than 60 days old, so it wouldn't have made the trending list we collect from anyway). All of its stars came from outside traffic.
- The @rammcodes X main post: 11.1k views, 19 replies, 21 reposts, 198 likes, 177 bookmarks; the reply with the link got only 857 views (X page scraped via r.jina.ai, 2026-11-06). At that conversion rate, X alone can't explain the 10-31 peak. Instagram Reels and Facebook reposts more likely amplified it (unverified).
- The author made all 893 commits (GitHub contributors API), with up to 154 commits on a single day in 19 days; C code is 9.6 MB, JS 4.2 MB. One person moving this fast strongly suggests heavy AI-assisted coding, though neither the repo nor the site says so publicly (I checked the last 30 commits; none have Co-Authored-By: Claude).
2. Competitors: who else does the same thing
"macOS-style / custom-desktop Linux" is a crowded, old category. Star counts come from the GitHub API or our github database, 2026-11-06.
| Competitors | Where | Launched | Scale | How LordOS differs from the others |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Omarchy(DHH / 37signals) | Open source | 2025-06 | omacom/omarchy 46.4k star | Omarchy is a configuration bundle on Arch + Hyprland, aimed at power users and keyboard-first workflows. LordOS is a full desktop written from scratch, aimed at Mac users who want it to look good out of the box. |
| elementary OS | Open-source distro | 2011 | Veteran Mac-like distro (its component repo gala has 305 stars) | elementary uses GTK / Mutter. LordOS writes its own display server and React UI engine, and ships a firewall map and password vault. |
| Zorin OS / Pear OS / various WhiteSur themes | Distro / theme | Years | WhiteSur-gtk-theme 9.4k stars; YouTube "Top 5 Linux Distros That Look Like macOS 2026"-style videos come out every year | Those put a Mac skin on top of GNOME / KDE. LordOS rewrites the underlying layer. |
| Pop!_OS COSMIC(System76) | Open source | 2022 onward, 2025 stable release | cosmic-epoch 7.0k star | Company-backed, new desktop written in Rust. LordOS is two people, using C + React / QuickJS. |
| Deepin(DDE) | distro | From ¥2004 | One of China's biggest in-house desktops | Also an in-house desktop. LordOS focuses on a privacy sandbox and a per-app firewall. |
| helloSystem / ravynOS / nextspace | Open source | 2019 / 2021 / 2016 | 2.5k / 7.1k / 2.1k star | The first two are based on FreeBSD, chasing the Mac experience or binary compatibility. nextspace recreates NeXTSTEP. LordOS is based on Debian, so Linux apps run directly. |
| New compositors like Hyprland / niri / umbriel / denial / FlameWM | Open source | 2022–2026 | Hyprland +1318 in the last 7 days, umbriel +191, FlameWM 101 stars | They all only do the compositor or shell layer. LordOS is a full distro plus apps. |
| macOS itself / Hackintosh | big tech | — | — | Users want a "free, open-source Mac experience." That's exactly the spot LordOS is going for. |
Verdict: lots of similar projects, and Omarchy is more than 100× its size. LordOS isn't the first or the biggest. Its stars came from a viral wave.
3. Growth tactics (where users come from)
- Developer influencer short video (confirmed, main cause): @rammcodes posted a 18-second video on X, Threads, and Instagram Reels on the same day. Caption: "Wait Bruh... we finally have a macOS-inspired Linux distro 💀🔥", and it specifically pointed out "It even has AI coding tools like Claude Code, Cursor, and Codex CLI available through its app store... If you're a developer, vibe-coder, or AI gangster... you gotta save this." That packaged a Linux distro as AI-crowd content. No evidence of a paid partnership.
- Facebook / Instagram repost pages (confirmed to exist, how much traffic is unverified): Facebook page 61554891783841 posted the same video with the same caption, and a Facebook group shared "465 MB RAM at idle - Boots in 16 s".
- daily.dev (confirmed): 10-29 was shared on daily.dev, the page shows 25K.
- Author self-promotion on Reddit and LinkedIn (confirmed): r/DistroHopping, r/LinuxEnEspanol, a self-created r/LordOS, and an iPERFEX LinkedIn post. These brought only about 20 stars (10-24 ago).
- Tech media and blogs (confirmed, came after the peak): administraciondesistemas / systemadministration (10-26), GT-NEWSTECH (11-01), ZDNet (11-04), Tux Machines, WURK Blog (11-05, a sober source-code review warning "try it in a disposable VM first"), and aggregators osrepos / repolode. After ZDNet, the repo gained only a dozen or so stars a day, suggesting mainstream media drove little star growth.
- HN (didn't take off): Algolia finds no posts titled LordOS, just one comment mentioning it.
- X corpus: our x-radar found 0 posts searching "LordOS" over the last 30 days (corpus coverage is limited).
4. Why it took off
- The hook is two hot keywords together: "free macOS" plus "AI coding tools". The influencer's caption barely mentioned tech. The focus was "looks like Mac" and "Claude Code / Cursor / Codex in the store," which hits the vibe-coder crowd.
- Screenshots and assets look like a commercial product: the site has 39 carousel slides, a gallery claiming 717 real-device screenshots, a mascot named Lumo, brand guidelines, a technical whitepaper, Portuguese and Spanish pages, and numbers you can drop straight into a headline: "465 MB RAM, 16-second boot, Ed25519 signed." Influencers and bloggers can use them right away.
- The "written from scratch" tech story holds up under reshares: a display server written in C, React running on QuickJS, and an eBPF / Landlock per-app firewall with a live world map. ZDNet's headline was "I thought it was another macOS clone, then I opened its network monitor."
- Shipping density is high, so this looks like it's really being built: 19 days, 0.8.0 through 0.8.8.3 with several beta releases, with ISO, OVA and Raspberry Pi 5 images, and a one-line curl install on Debian 13; 893 commits. 33 forks, and people in the HN comments say they actually installed it, so it's being tried out, not just starred.
5. Differentiation, and whether that's why it took off
- The real differentiator is the technical approach: no GNOME or KDE, no reskin. The display stack, UI engine, and apps are all written in-house, plus privacy by default (app sandboxing, per-app firewall, built-in password manager). Among peers, only teams with a company behind them like COSMIC and Deepin have taken this path. Two people doing this would have been nearly impossible 2026 years ago, and AI-written code is probably a prerequisite (speculation).
- But this isn't the direct reason it got stars. What worked most in the spread was "looks like macOS" plus "can install AI coding tools." "In-house compositor, privacy firewall" is the second layer that made writers like ZDNet willing to write long pieces. In other words, the differentiation gave credibility, and the influencer gave traffic.
6. Visibility and copycats
- Visibility: it's circulating in small circles. One influencer video (X 11k views), daily.dev, one ZDNet piece, and several small blogs. It didn't hit the HN front page, and no big X accounts discussed it. No revenue involved (free, MIT, accepts only donations and iPERFEX custom work).
- Copycats: none seen. ijlaal1610/LordOS is a mirror / copy of 10-29, 0 stars, not a product copycat.
7. Takeaways
- "Old topic, new buzzwords": Mac-style distros have existed for years. Putting Claude Code / Cursor / Codex in the store as a selling point is what got it into the AI content creators' topic pool.
- Prepare assets that influencers can use directly: a one-line numeric selling point, dozens of high-quality screenshots, a 18-second screen recording, and a mascot. Accounts like @rammcodes are always looking for "Wait Bruh"-style material, so feeding them proactively is probably far more effective than posting on Reddit yourself (self-promotion over 10 days got only about 20 stars).
- Use AI to build, with two people, a project (a full desktop) that used to take a team, then create shock with "two people built this." That part is replicable, but whether it keeps word of mouth depends on real usability.
8. Uncertain
- Whether the +146 on 10-31 came from Instagram Reels, Facebook reposts, or other channels can't be verified one by one (the GitHub stargazers timestamp API returns 404 for this repo, and Reddit is blocked by 403).
- No evidence on whether @rammcodes shared it organically or was paid / pitched.
- Whether the author uses heavy AI to write code is inferred only from commit speed. The author hasn't said so publicly.
- Actual installs are unknown: there's no download count. WURK's review noted the installation process "never ran end to end" and hardware coverage is limited. After the 11-05 peak, interest dropped to about a dozen stars a day, and it's unclear whether it can sustain.
