# Cindy: an AI Agent client written by a game company boss; one tweet helped it gain 5,000 stars in a week

**What it is** A free, open-source AI assistant you install on both your computer and phone. It puts Claude Code and Codex, which you already pay for, into one interface, and from your phone you can drive the computer at home to get work done.

**Why it took off** First it reached 3,000 stars in the Chinese-speaking world on the strength of its parent company's conference and the founder's name. Then on Oct 23, the big X account @GithubProjects recommended it across platforms, which pushed it onto the GitHub trending charts and to #1 site-wide within three days. Aggregators and short-video reposts then amplified it.

**C** **How you could follow** Don't build yet another multi-agent unified client. Instead, do what it hasn't done well: "remote-control local Claude Code / Codex from your phone," or build remote and approval plugins for this kind of client, use a one-line selling point plus a big-account recommendation to push onto trending.

Grade C: its stars mainly came from a listed company boss's name, a full-time team shipping releases daily, and one big-account recommendation, none of which followers can get. The unified-client slot is already crowded with cc-switch, AionUi, Orkas, and others. What you can learn is how to write the selling point and the trending-push rhythm; the phone remote-control niche still has some room. Spreading in small circles

Cindy is an open-source AI Agent client built by Huang Yimeng, CEO of Xindong (the parent company of TapTap), together with colleagues: it packages Claude Code, Codex, and Pi into a desktop and mobile app, and the phone can remote-control the computer at home. Its stars came in two stages. Launched in July at the company's developer conference, it gathered about 3,000 stars after Chinese media reported on it. Then on Oct 23, a big X account that recommends GitHub projects posted about it, and four days later it reached #1 on GitHub Trending site-wide. Half of the playbook can be learned; the other half is something only a listed company has.

### One conference, one tweet

2026 July 26, Shanghai, TapTap developer salon. Huang Yimeng spoke for nearly an hour about TapTap's ten years and AI mini-games (5,002 new titles this year, 4,000+ of them AI-assisted), and at the end he announced something new:

> "To lower the barrier to using local Agents, today we're launching Cindy (named after an AI persona our team has used internally for half a year)... Today Cindy is open-sourced for everyone: the future of content creation belongs to everyone, and closed source makes no sense."

He said the project was started over two months ago for non-technical colleagues at Xindong, "so people wouldn't just chat with AI in a dialog box, but could open it and get real work done." He also called the two and a half months of immersive development "the strongest positive feedback period of my life" (Sohu Games Gyroscope, 7-26). Gamersky, NetEase, Tencent News and Zhihu columns all covered it that same day. By mid-October, this repo, created in July 22, had about 3,000 stars, gaining a dozen or twenty a day.

Then came Oct 23 12:54 (UTC). @GithubProjects on X (bio: "unofficial, but noticed by GitHub") posted a one-liner with an image:

> "Run an open-source AI agent on your own machine that drives your browser, computer and phone to do real work."

The link in the reply was titled "an open-source AI agent that can mix Claude Code and Codex mid-task." The post showed 13.5M views on X, 1,200 likes, and 1,800 bookmarks (11-06), and the same content was synced to Threads, Bluesky, Facebook, and Instagram. Cindy's official account replied below: "Thanks for featuring Cindy! We're the team behind it."

### How the stars grew

| Date | New stars that day | What happened |
|---|---|---|
| September ~ 10-22 | single digits to a few dozen | Conference buzz faded, plateaued |
| 10-23 | +254 | @GithubProjects post; same day it hit #10 on the TypeScript daily chart |
| 10-24 | +566 | Top of GitHub Trending site-wide |
| 10-25 | +745 | #2 on the TypeScript chart |
| 10-26 | +1,603 | Trending #1 overall |
| 10-27 ~ 10-29 | +1,013, +631, +496 | Picked up by aggregator sites, Douyin-style short video accounts, and LinkedIn posts |
| After 10-30 | 80–140 per day | Decline |

(Daily gains from trendshift.io; 11-06 total stars and 9,338 forks by 1,150.)

Once it hit Trending, the long tail took over: auto-generated GitHub daily digest sites, a "GitHub Daily Trend" podcast, auto-narrated YouTube videos, Instagram reels saying "comment Cindy and I'll DM you the link," LinkedIn posts reading "+5,366 stars this week," and a Korean blog. Nearly every repost has the same headline in different wording: Claude Code plus Codex, in one app.

Whether that tweet was paid promotion can't be verified. This account routes all its links through osp.fyi short links, which suggests some commercial operation (inference).

### What it actually is

The first line of the README: "An open-source, out-of-the-box AI agent that you shape yourself." Broken down, it makes three claims:

- **It doesn't build its own agent.** Claude Code, Codex, and the open-source Pi are treated as swappable "engines"; you can switch mid-session. Claude Code and Codex subscriptions you already pay for can be authorized directly.

- **Your computer is the server.** A work PC, a home desktop, a laptop, and a phone signed into the same account can pick up each other's sessions, share models configured on other machines, and use remote desktop from a phone. The README's own words: "No need to rent a server or deploy anything yourself."

- **Companions, memory, skills.** Give agents roles, write rules, store learnings, connect Slack, Telegram, and Feishu, with a built-in TapTap Maker plugin (XD's AI game-making tool).

The client is free, Apache-2.0 licensed. Where the money comes from, Huang Yimeng made clear at the launch event: free core services (voice input, remote takeover, trial access to all models), occasional model use through their low-cost hosted service, and an enterprise edition later. For people who want to copy it, though, this part doesn't matter much.

### Why this one

1. **Already 3,000 stars at launch.** A listed company's CEO writing the code himself, announced at a company conference, with Chinese game and tech media covering it in bulk. For an ordinary developer's new repo, three-digit stars in the first month would be a good result.

2. **A one-line pitch developers want immediately.** Many developers in 2026 hold both Claude Code and Codex subscriptions, and "put them in one app, and your phone can remote-control your home computer" needs no explanation. The accounts that pushed it and the people who reposted it mostly used this exact line.

3. **Looks very active.** The top contributors are dashhuang (Huang Yimeng) and a group of XD employees with XD suffixes. In 61 days they merged 2,419 PRs, with PR numbers already past 9,000, and shipped a release almost daily through late October. Among the 2,000+ open issues, many are opened by bots and the team itself, reflecting their AI-assisted development workflow, not user bug reports. One person couldn't maintain this release cadence alone.

4. **The README asks for stars.** The top shows "GitHub Trending #1 · 2026.10.26," includes a star history chart, and says: "A few people noticed. Every star means something."

The real ignition was the 2th post, which caught @GithubProjects: a base of 3,000 stars made it look credible, the one-line pitch made the post easy to write, the post pushed it onto Trending, and Trending pushed it to every auto-repost channel.

### Who else is doing the same thing

This category is extremely crowded. Someone on X replied under Huang Yimeng's post, "this space is really competitive."

| Project | Stars (11-06) | Compared with Cindy |
|---|---|---|
| cc-switch | 152k | A small tool for switching configs and providers across Claude Code and Codex, not a workbench |
| AionUi | 34k | Also wraps multiple CLI agents in a GUI, but has no mobile app or remote desktop |
| Eigent | 15.8k | Competes with Claude Cowork, builds its own multi-agent core |
| Orkas | 9,035 | The closest one: a master dispatcher with 16 specialist agents, also works with Claude Code and Codex. Gained +5,150 in 7 days in early November and is chasing the charts along the same path. |
| OpenClaw | 394k | Pioneer of "working" agents, builds its own core |
| Hermes Agent | 260k | An agent core that grows and improves itself |
| Claude desktop app, Codex App | Built into big-company products | Only supports its own models |

Cindy isn't the first, nor does it have the most features. Its edge is mobile and cross-device, but that point gets far less airtime than the "Claude Code + Codex in one" line.

### Its weak spots

- **Lots of stars, but users aren't visibly there.** The US App Store listing "Cindy - AI Assistant" has only 17 ratings and the China store 36 (App Store, 11-06); desktop downloads aren't public.

- **Heat faded fast.** Daily gains dropped from 1,603 to around 100 in just one week.

- **The moat sits with big companies.** Anthropic and OpenAI are both building multi-device and remote control into their own desktop apps. How long the cross-vendor angle holds depends on whether they stay open.

### If it were you

**The verdict:** Don't build yet another "unified multi-agent client." But the path that ignited it can be copied. You don't have Cindy's starting point (a listed company's CEO, a whole team, 9,000+ PRs, a company conference). In this category there are already predecessors with 150k and 30k stars. One person building the same thing has a hard time giving anyone a reason to switch.

**Who it's for:** Developers who already have a small, sharp tool around agents, and can state in one sentence what it adds to the Claude Code or Codex subscriptions people already pay for.

**Who it's not for:** Individuals or small teams trying to build a big, all-in-one agent workbench from scratch, or anyone hoping to make money from it. Open-source clients like this rarely earn their builders anything.

**How to do it:**

1. Pick one thing Cindy does poorly and do only that. For example, just "remote-control Claude Code or Codex on your own computer from your phone," and make it usable within five minutes of install. Or port it to another ecosystem: Windows first, Linux servers, or a minimal version for non-technical colleagues.

2. Make the first sentence say "the subscription you already pay for can now do more," and put a ten-second screen recording at the top of the README.

3. Build a base first: post it to your own Chinese or English communities and get a few hundred stars and a real update history before a big account notices.

**How to get users:** Follow the second paragraph of Cindy's playbook. Send the screen recording and a one-line description to cross-platform GitHub-repo accounts like @GithubProjects, and to GitHub digest accounts on Instagram and TikTok. Aim for the TypeScript or Python daily trending charts, which are easier than the overall chart. Once you chart, aggregator sites will repost you automatically.

**How much time is left:** The Claude Code and Codex subscription wave is still running, but the official apps add features every month. My estimate is that the window for third-party shells is a few months (inference), and it gets harder the longer you wait.

**Signs you've misread it:** Two weeks after posting, no recommendation account has reposted it, you haven't charted in the language rankings, and stars are stuck in double digits. That means the pitch isn't tight enough to fit in one line. Or Anthropic or OpenAI launch phone remote control for local agents themselves, and the reason for a shell like this disappears.

## makecindy/cindy (Cindy): why it took off

> Research date 2026-11-06. Sources: our data card (GitHub repo), GitHub API, trendshift.io, media coverage, and X/Threads/LinkedIn pages (fetched via Jina).

### One line

Cindy is an open-source AI agent client led by Huang Yimeng (GitHub: dashhuang), founder of XD Network (Xindong, parent company of TapTap). It has an Electron desktop app and a React Native mobile app. It puts three harnesses (Claude Code, Codex, and Pi) into one interface, and supports linking multiple computers and phones, remote desktop, companions, memory, and skills. Stars came in two waves. In late July, the TDW conference kicked off traffic in the Chinese-speaking community, reaching about 3,000 by mid-October. On Oct 23, the big X account @GithubProjects posted a recommendation, and it hit GitHub Trending, reaching overall #1 on Oct 26, gaining about 5,000 in one week.

### 1. Data

- The repo was created 2026-07-22; the makecindy 2026-07-20 organization is a GitHub-verified org (is_verified=true) with 5 public repos. As of 11-06:9,386 stars, it has 1,159 forks (GitHub API).

- Daily gains (trendshift.io): from September through October 22, they ran from single digits to dozens a day. 10-23 +254,10-24 +566,10-25 +745, **10-26 +1,603** , 10-27 +1,013,10-28 +631,10-29 +496. After 10-30, around 80–140 per day. The data card shows prev_7d 5,143, and 7 days recently 795.

- Rankings: 10-26 GitHub Trending overall #1, with "GitHub Trending #1 · 2026.10.26" at the top of the README. Best Trendshift overall rank #6, TypeScript chart #1 (trendshift).

- The engineering is big: PR numbers have reached #9,174, and the search API gives a total of 5,139 PRs. 61 days, 2,419 PRs merged (trendshift). A formal release comes out almost every day, with v0.1.111 to v0.1.120 falling between 10-19 and 10-29. Top contributors: dashhuang with 2,974 commits, MagicLizi 2,268, zqchris 2,181, DavidShenXD 1,353, GaoWeiLiuXD 313. Accounts with the XD suffix are Xindong employees.

- The card's "1,825 open issues is high" can't be read as user load: there are 2,208 open issues now, and of the latest 100, 46 were opened by `cindy-issue[bot]`. There are also many "PR #xxxx maintainer confirmation requests" opened by team members such as MagicLizi. The team is using issues as a workflow for AI-driven development (Huang Yimeng himself said Cindy was "vibe-coded"), so this says nothing about how many external users there are or how many bugs are being reported.

- Mobile is small: on the US App Store, "Cindy - AI Assistant" (XD Entertainment, listed 2026-08-03) has only 17 ratings, and the China store's "Cindy - 全能 AI 助手" has 36 (iTunes Search API). It's on Google Play as com.xd.cindy, which our googleplay database doesn't cover. So high stars doesn't mean the app has many users.

### 2. Growth tactics (where users come from)

| Channel | Evidence | Confirmed? |
|---|---|---|
| Parent company launch at a conference, Chinese media coverage | At the TapTap Developer Conference TDW on 2026-07-26, Huang Yimeng launched Cindy at the end of his talk and announced on the spot that it would be free and open source. GameLook, Tencent News, NetEase, Sohu and Zhihu columns all covered it ("Huang Yimeng launches AI Agent product Cindy", "Why would a game company open-source a general-purpose agent?"). The same day he posted on X 2081231348950315112 to introduce it. This wave pushed stars to 2,000–3,000 (a CSDN tutorial cites 2,249 stars). | Yes |
| Founder's personal account | @DashHuang keeps introducing it in Chinese on X; the official accounts @making_cindy (337 posts) and @Cindy_Updates post updates weekly | Yes |
| X big account @GithubProjects | On 2026-10-23 12:54 UTC it posted "Run an open-source AI agent on your own machine that drives your browser, computer and phone to do real work", the same content synced to Threads, Bluesky, Facebook, Instagram Reels, with an osp.fyi short link. That day stars jumped from 20 a day to 254. @making_cindy pinned a reply: "Thanks for featuring Cindy! We're the team behind it" | Timing confirmed; whether it was paid promotion not verified |
| GitHub Trending self-reinforcement | On 10-23 it entered the TypeScript chart at #10, then #3, #2, #1; from 10-24 it made the all-languages chart, reaching #1 overall at 10-26 (trendshift) | Yes |
| Aggregator sites and automated content-farm long tail | Between 10-23 and 11-01 a flood of auto-generated coverage and videos appeared: earlysignal.news, explorineer, aetos.ai, freshweights, baffox, runany.dev, trend.ondo.sh, the Apple Podcasts "GitHub Daily Trend" show, auto-narrated YouTube videos, IG/FB reels with "comment Cindy to get the link" (e.g. @githunt.sh), LinkedIn personal posts ("+5,366 stars this week"), Reddit r/BestGitHubRepos, and the Korean site tau-home.com | Yes (all secondary spread after Trending) |
| Own-ecosystem traffic funneling | Cindy has a built-in TapTap Maker plugin, plus a TapTap Maker Benchmark. At TDW they also announced that TapTap Maker users bring their own models and compute, and Cindy is the client for that. | Yes (how much traffic it funnels is unclear) |
| Ads | Nothing found | Not verified |

### 3. Competitors

| Name | Where | Launched | Scale | How it differs from Cindy |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| cc-switch(farion1231) | Open-source desktop app | 2025-08 | 152k stars | Mainly configuration and provider switchers for Claude Code/Codex and similar; Cindy is a full agent workbench, with a phone app and remote access too |
| AionUi(iOfficeAI) | Open-source desktop app | 2025-08 | 34k stars | Also a GUI "Cowork" wrapping multiple CLI agents; Cindy adds cross-device linking, remote desktop, companions, and hosted model services |
| Eigent | Open-source desktop app | 2025-07 | 15.8k stars | Positioned as an open-source alternative to Claude Cowork, building its own multi-agent system; Cindy uses the official Claude Code/Codex directly as the harness, so users can use their existing subscriptions |
| Orkas | Open-source desktop app | 2026-04 | 9,035 stars, +5,150 in the last 7 days | The closest one: a Commander dispatches 16 expert agents, plus Claude Code, Codex, etc., under MIT license. It's currently chasing the charts the same way Cindy did; Cindy adds a phone app and remote desktop |
| OpenClaw | Open source | 2025-11 | 394k stars | A general-purpose "actually gets work done" agent; it pioneered the category. Chinese coverage says Cindy was "named after its own little lobster", and on X someone asked "why not pi, lobster, codex?" |
| Hermes Agent(Nous) | Open source | 2025-07 | 260k stars | A general agent that grows over time; Cindy doesn't build its own agent core, it does orchestration and the client |
| Claude desktop app / Cowork, Codex App | Big-company features | 2025–2026 | Big | A single-vendor official solution; Cindy is cross-vendor and open source, and your phone can remote-control your own computer |
| Manus, Kimi Agent | iOS/web | 2025 | Manus US store 40k ratings | Cloud agents; Cindy runs locally, "your computer is the server" |

Verdict: this track is crowded (a comment on X: "this track is fierce"). Cindy isn't the first, and it doesn't have the most features.

### 4. Why it charted

1. **Cold start through resources** : the founder of a listed game company wrote the code himself and launched it at a conference, and Chinese game and tech media covered it heavily. It started with about 3,000 stars and credibility. The team is from Xindong, PRs reached the 9,000 level, releases come daily; an individual project rarely iterates this fast (GitHub contributor stats, release records).

2. **An English-language account kicked it off:** 10-23 @GithubProjects pushed it cross-platform, daily new stars more than 10× in one day, climbed to #1 on all of GitHub Trending within 4 days, then dozens of auto-aggregator sites and short-video accounts reposted it and amplified the wave (per trendshift daily chart and the publish dates on each aggregator page).

3. **A one-line pitch that hits a current pain point** : "Already paying for a Claude Code / Codex subscription? Put them in one app, switch harnesses mid-task, control your home computer from your phone, no server rental." Almost every repost headline uses a form like "Claude Code + Codex in One App", about how developers put their multiple subscription quotas to use.

4. **Product polish and packaging** : clients on 5 platforms, bilingual Chinese and English READMEs, a website, and weekly update posts. The README includes a star-history chart with "A few people noticed. Every star means something.", openly nudging people to star it.

### 5. Differentiation

- What's different: (a) it doesn't build its own agent core; it treats the official Claude Code, Codex, and the open-source Pi as swappable harnesses, so existing subscriptions work directly; (b) multiple computers plus a phone form one workspace, including remote sessions, shared model providers, and phone remote desktop, "your computer is the server"; (c) companions, memory, skills, a plugin marketplace, and IM channels (Telegram/Feishu/WeCom); (d) backed by a game company, it connects to TapTap Maker and multimodal models.

- Is that why it took off? **Partly** . The spread copy during the surge almost all talks about (a) and (b), which shows those two selling points work. But similar tools like cc-switch and AionUi already existed. It got to 9k stars mainly through the founder's resources, intense iteration, and the big-account recommendation on 10-23. It also cooled fast: daily adds dropped from 1,603 to about 100, so long-term momentum hasn't formed.

### 6. Visibility and copycats

- Visibility: revenue isn't public (the client is free, hosted model services are paid, see cindy.app/pricing, no numbers disclosed). It was covered by mainstream game and tech media in Chinese circles as early as July. In English it's mainly GitHub aggregators, content farms, and LinkedIn alt accounts spreading it; I didn't see in-depth coverage from top tech outlets or major AI voices. It counts as "talked about in a small circle," but the category itself is already crowded.

- Copycats: I didn't find a clear project copying Cindy. Orkas was built earlier, so it can't be called a copy, but in early November it gained 5,150 stars in 7 days, chasing the charts the same way.

### 7. What others can learn

- Doesn't build its own agent; it does "a unified client for BYO subscriptions + multi-device." The pitch is clear in one sentence, and developers immediately see how to use it.

- The cold start came from the parent company's conference and the founder's personal account; the English-side surge came from cross-platform recommendation accounts like @GithubProjects; after reaching Trending, the aggregator long tail takes over on its own.

- Put a star-history chart and a Trending #1 badge in the README, with an emotional line nudging people to star; ship releases daily and post weekly updates on X so the project looks active.

### 8. Still unclear

- Whether the @GithubProjects post was paid promotion (this account often uses osp.fyi short links, which look commercial) is not verified.

- Actual user count: few iOS ratings, Play install count not obtained, desktop downloads not public.

- No public data on paid uptake or business goals for hosted model services.

- On 10-26, no other promoters (Chinese KOLs, Jike, Xiaohongshu) turned up in our search.
