# A big company launched on the same day, so an open-source "alternative" dropped that night: how OpenMausBot hit 11k stars in 14 weeks

**What it is** An open-source alternative to Grok Bot: a Telegram-style desktop chat app where each contact is an AI assistant that calls the Claude / Codex command-line tools on your computer.

**Why it took off** It showed up the day Grok Bot launched and claimed the "open-source Grok Bot" name. Its pitch, "no new subscription needed" plus a ready-to-install build, grew it steadily. Then, in late October, a founder's post with 250k views, a revenue article, and Grok Bot suddenly hitting usage limits all landed together and pushed it onto trending at #2.

**C** **How you could follow it** Stop building open-source Grok Bot clones. Keep an agent foundation ready, and when the next big company launches a new category, release a double-click-to-install open-source version with the name that rides their launch, then reply under their launch post to pull in traffic.

Grade C: the "open-source alternative on the day of a big-company launch" move is worth learning, but the lane already has a dozen-plus repos, and the top five are all past several thousand stars. Its stars came mostly from being first and from Grok Bot's problems, which late followers can't get. Copying it isn't worth the effort. Publicly known / widely discussed

xAI launched Grok Bot in Aug 11, and an open-source version appeared the same day from a two-person team in India. It runs on the Claude / Codex subscriptions you already pay for, so you don't need to buy a $30 Grok plan. Within 11 weeks it had about 14k stars and reached #2 on GitHub's all-site trending. The playbook is worth learning, but the "open-source Grok Bot" lane already has a dozen-plus repos, and the first place is taken.

### A reply on the night of Aug 11

2026 Aug 11: xAI launched Grok Bot. The UI looks like a chat app, and each "contact" in the sidebar is an agent with its own computer, working on tasks for you. Entry pricing is bundled into the SuperGrok subscription at $30/month.

On the same day 18:58 (UTC), milind-soni/OpenMausBot appeared on GitHub, under the name OpenGrokBot at the time. Its author, Milind Soni (@milindlabs on X), replied in the Grok Bot pricing thread: I'm building an open source version, and you can just use your existing Claude Code / Codex subscription. Per gtmdaily, that post got about 495k impressions and 3.3K bookmarks. The next morning, Indian AI account Vaibhav Sisinty reposted it: "Grok Bot launched today. This guy already built an open source version."

It came out that fast because they were already building something similar. When Grok Bot launched, they renamed the half-finished project and released it (co-founder Omkar Satpute's account in a Product Hunt comment). The company is Supamaus Software, registered in Baramati, a small city in Maharashtra, India. It has two people and no funding.

### What it actually is

An Electron desktop app with signed installers for Mac, Windows, and Ubuntu that install with a double-click. It opens to a Telegram-style interface where each contact is a bot, and underneath it calls the `claude`, `codex`, and `grok` command-line tools you already have installed and logged into. Each bot can pick a different model and has its own local VM or cloud desktop. It connects to 500+ apps via Composio, supports scheduled tasks, and requires you to approve risky actions on an approval card before they run. A community-built iOS companion app also exists, with only 6 rating in the US App Store (11-06). Mobile isn't the focus.

The code is open source under Apache-2.0. The money comes from "keep it running when your laptop is closed": the free tier only works while your computer is on. Cloud hosting is Starter $15, Pro $49, and Max $99 per month, with team plans from $169 (mausbot.com pricing page). On TrustMRR, using DodoPayments-verified figures, 11-06 shows $7,218 in revenue over the last 30 days and $8,889 cumulative, with about 155 active subscriptions. In Aug 25 its MRR was only $30 (gtmdaily, citing EveryDev).

### How the stars climbed

The first two and a half months were slow growth. Daily GitHub numbers: on Oct 16, 4,919 stars; on Oct 28, 5,795; in between, 50 to 140 new stars per day.

Then came this week:

| Date | New stars that day | What happened that day |
|---|---|---|
| 10-28 | +142 | At 8:00 UTC, Milind posted on X "insane that this is open source now" with a demo video, reaching 251k views |
| 10-29 | +929 | gtmdaily published a "$7K MRR" feature; the adafruit blog reposted the tweet |
| 10-30 | +590 | First time on GitHub's all-site daily trending, at #5 |
| 10-31 | +1,061 | All-site daily trending #2; Grok Bot users started reporting that their quotas were gone overnight |
| 11-01 | +1,119 | Grok Bot weekly quotas widely reported as "jumped to 100%" |
| 11-02 | +908 | TechCrunch: Musk says Grok Bot's costs are "unsustainably high" and tightens quotas |
| 11-03 – 11-05 | +759 / +494 / +325 | Heat fades |
| 11-06 | +1,151 | Posted "Stop using Locked Bot"; all-site weekly trending #7 |

(Star counts are GitHub daily records with 10-23 missing one day. Events come from X, TechCrunch 11-02, and gtmdaily 10-29.)

Three things stacked: the founder's post with a video, an article about revenue, and a competitor stumbling. It's unclear which contributed most, but the timing lines up closely. Once on trending it became a flywheel: trendshift, various "GitHub daily trends" accounts, French, Portuguese, and Chinese reposting sites, and self-hosting tutorial sites all ran it in turn. That late-October week added +5,817, 3 times the previous week. Forks are 1,818, about 13.8% of stars, with 200 or so contributors. That suggests real people are using it, not inflated numbers (inference).

### Why it ranks first

Functionally it has no unique trick. "Bring your own model, runs locally" exists in almost every open-source peer. What really separates it is this:

- **It showed up on day one.** The phrase "open source Grok Bot" first attached to its name, so later entrants can only be "another one".

- **A one-line price hook.** The big-company versions either lock you to their model or make you buy a separate $20 to $200 subscription. It says: use the one you already pay for. The most repeated user praise quoted on its site is "connecting directly to the CLI is the best feature".

- **A finished product, not a framework.** Signed dmg / exe / deb installers that you can install and chat with right away; non-developers can use it too. CopilotKit/OpenBot (10k stars) and elie222/rakazo (7.3K stars) are more like frameworks for developers; you have to deploy them yourself.

- **Every big-tech launch gets one copy.** When Meta shipped Muse (9-08), OpenAI shipped dots (9-29), Anthropic shipped Claude Duet (10-21) and Manus shipped Cue, the READMEs and websites immediately added "Muse alternative" and "dots alternative" comparison pages, and GitHub topics got tags like grok-bot-alternative. The name changed three times as well: OpenGrokBot, OpenMausBot, MausBot. Avoiding trademark issues may also have been a factor (inference).

- **Fast releases.** Reached v0.1.140 in under three months; the founder made about 4,200 commits.

### Who it's competing with

| Project | Stars (11-06) | How it differs |
|---|---|---|
| Grok Bot(xAI) | Closed source | Only uses Grok, runs in the cloud, and all bots share one cloud computer. Folded into X Premium starting 10-12. |
| CopilotKit/OpenBot | About 10k | Backed by a company; an enterprise-oriented framework. |
| elie222/rakazo | About 7.3K | Built by the Inbox Zero author, launched two days later, leans self-hosted. |
| Anil-matcha/open-duet | About 6.8K | An old repo renamed; it carries the names of six big-tech companies too. |
| nightly-labs/openbot | About 5.8K | The closest in form (local desktop app + three CLIs), launched a day later. |
| modelflare-ai/AnyModelBot | About 2.7K | 10-27 was only just created; pay-as-you-go, can connect to WeChat and Feishu. |
| Other | Dozens to hundreds | OpenGrokBot, opengrok, kwant, guilds, lorca…… |

There's also a cautionary example: HarnessMD/munder-difflin launched in May with "a room full of agents" and stalled at 9.4k stars. It came before Grok Bot and missed the launch wave. Someone else is already building "Grok Bot / OpenMausBot alternative plugins", treating it as the benchmark.

The conclusion is blunt: first place in this lane is taken, and so are the top five.

### If it were you

**Verdict:** Stop building an "open-source Grok Bot." What's worth learning is the playbook, not the product. Next time a big company launches a new category, ship an open-source version you can install the same day.

**Who it's for:** developers who already have a half-finished agent tool, one or two people, and can package it as an "open-source X" with installers within 24 hours. It helps to have a few thousand followers on X or LinkedIn, or to know a big account willing to repost.

**Who it's not for:** anyone trying to build a better Grok Bot alternative from scratch in this lane now (a dozen repos are fighting over the same search terms; #1 has 14k stars and #5 has already dropped to a few thousand); people who only write frameworks and won't package signed installers as an app; anyone expecting to earn money directly from this (it took 14k stars to reach about $7K/month, and that money comes from cloud hosting, not the open-source version).

**How to do it:** keep watching the release cadence of the big companies, and keep a base project you can rename and ship at short notice. On launch day: put the rival product's name right in the repo name and description, state in the first screen of the README that users no longer need another subscription, and ship a Mac installer that day. Afterward, add an "X alternative" comparison page each time another company follows. If you still want to squeeze into this lane, aim at what the leader did poorly: its mobile side is barely used and the free tier stops when your laptop closes. An open-source project focused on "directing the bots on your own computer from your phone" may still have room (inference; I haven't seen anyone do it).

**How to get users:** on the night of launch, reply under the big companies' launch posts and pricing threads instead of starting your own thread; the next day, find an AI account with a large following to repost. Once you have a few thousand stars, prepare a post with a demo video plus a "numbers" story (revenue, downloads), aiming to get covered the same day and hit trending. In the days a competitor has a problem (usage limits, price hikes, outages), post "switch to the open-source version."

**When is "before":** this round of "personal agent team" launches has run from August to late October. Grok Bot, Muse, dots and Duet have all shipped, and few major companies are left to launch. The window opens the day the next new category appears, and if you're 48 hours late, someone else has the name.

**Where the call was wrong:** ① In November a later entrant passed OpenMausBot's star count within a month, so arriving first wasn't the deciding factor. ② OpenMausBot's daily star gains fell back to a few dozen per day in November, and TrustMRR revenue stopped growing, so this was a wave from Grok Bot's problems, not something the playbook could sustain. ③ After the next big-company product launch, none of the same-day open-source versions passed a thousand stars, so the move has already been overused.

## Why OpenMausBot (MausBot) could take off

> Data card: GitHub source, milind-soni/OpenMausBot. Research date 2026-11-06.

### Bottom line

xAI launched Grok Bot on 2026-08-11, and someone shipped an open-source copy, OpenMausBot, the same day. It rode the launch buzz around Grok Bot, and its selling point was "use the Claude / Codex subscription you're already paying for", so you don't need to buy another $30/month Grok subscription. Then Meta Muse, OpenAI dots, Manus Cue and Claude Duet launched one after another, and it positioned itself as the "open-source alternative" to each, capturing their search traffic. In about 11 weeks it reached roughly 14k stars, and the verified MRR on TrustMRR is about $7.2K. The late-October surge came from secondary spread after stars built up: GitHub trending, aggregator sites, media and KOLs all amplified it together.

### What it is

- An Electron desktop app (Mac / Windows / Ubuntu), with iOS / Android companion apps too. The interface looks like Telegram, and every "contact" in the sidebar is a real agent. Underneath, it calls the `claude`, `codex` and `grok` CLIs already installed on the machine, so it uses the user's existing logins and subscriptions. Each bot has its own model, cloud desktop or local VM, 500+ apps connected via Composio, scheduled tasks, and risky actions require an approval card first (README: [github.com/milind-soni/OpenMausBot](https://github.com/milind-soni/OpenMausBot)).

- The core is open source under Apache-2.0. Commercialization is open-source core plus cloud hosting: the free tier only works while your own computer is on; Cloud Starter is $15, Pro $49 and Max $99 per month, selling cloud machines and cloud desktops that keep running when your laptop is closed; team plans start at $169, Business is $599 (self-hosted $299) (https://mausbot.com/pricing ; gtmdaily 2026-10-29).

- The company is Supamaus Software Private Limited, registered in Baramati, India, funded by the two founders. Milind Soni (@milindlabs) writes the code, and Omkar Satpute is CEO (https://gtmdaily.com/blog/news/mausbot-the-open-source-grok-bot-alternative-at-7k-mrr).

### Growth data

- Our GitHub repo (repo_day / repo_profile): 10-16 is 4,919 stars, 10-28 is 5,795,11-06 is 13,131; over the last 7 days +5,817, over the previous 7 days +1,971; single-day peak +1,151 (11-06); forks 1,818 (13.8%); suspect is empty. The GitHub API lookup today shows 14,307 stars and 1,969 forks.

- From August to mid-October it averaged about +50 to +90,10-29 per day, with single-day peaks of +929, and it began accelerating. The trending data shows: 10-30 first entered the site-wide daily chart (#5), 10-31 reached #2 site-wide (895 stars/day), and 11-06 ranked #7 on the site-wide weekly chart and #3 on the TypeScript weekly chart.

- The post Milind published on X the night of launch got about 495k impressions, 2.5K likes and 3.3K bookmarks (as relayed by gtmdaily, [x.com/milindlabs/status/2087289803964559746](https://x.com/milindlabs/status/2087289803964559746)). The official claim is "11.9k stars, 172 contributors, 54,000+ desktop users" (a @milindlabs repost, search summary, unverified).

- Revenue: TrustMRR verified via DodoPayments. As of 2026-11-06 the figures were MRR $7,159, 155 active subscriptions, $30 revenue over the last 7,120 days (+326% vs. the prior period), $8,889 cumulative, a self-reported ~10k users, and 30 visitors over the last 44,969 days (https://trustmrr.com/startup/mausbot). EveryDev recorded MRR of only $8-25 at 30 (as relayed by gtmdaily).

- The iOS app "MausBot: Private AI Agents" (id6803387923) was listed on 2026-09-22 and has only 6 ratings in the US store, showing the phone app is not the main channel (iTunes lookup).

### Competitors

| Grok Bot(xAI) | Big-company features | 2026-08-11 | Initially bundled with SuperGrok $30 / Cursor Pro $20 subscriptions; starting 10-12 it moved into X Premium ($30); the enterprise version is GA. | Only runs Grok models, in the cloud, with all bots sharing one cloud computer (the official docs say so, and Reddit criticized it). OpenMausBot lets each bot pick a different model, runs on your own machine, and works with subscriptions you already have. |
| Meta Muse | Big-company features | 2026-09-08 | Free tier, plus $20 / $100 subscriptions; US and Canada only. | It's a single agent running on Meta's cloud; OpenMausBot is a set of bots, and the data stays local |
| OpenAI dots | Big-company features | 2026-09-29(DevDay) | Built into ChatGPT, on the Pro / Business plans | Only works with GPT, so you need to buy the right plan; OpenMausBot needs no extra plan |

| elie222/rakazo | Open source | 2026-08-13 | 7,262 stars (7 days +935) | Built by a known developer (author of Inbox Zero), with choice of models and sandbox, leaning self-hosted |
| Anil-matcha/open-duet | Open source | An old library renamed and rebuilt | 6,829 star | Same six big-company names, riding search traffic |
| modelflare-ai/AnyModelBot | Open source | 2026-10-27 | 2,727 star | Goes through Modelflare's unified key with pay-as-you-go, and connects to WeChat / Feishu |
| leepokai/Codync | Open source | 2026-03-18 (later changed its positioning) | 1,919 star | Written in Rust, connects 40+ CLI agents, completely free |
| Other small libraries | Open source | 8 to October | Dozens to hundreds of stars | wolfqing/OpenGrokBot (115), OnlyTerp/opengrok (507), rome, lorca, kwant, 5dive, guilds, etc. |

(Star counts from 2026-11-06's GitHub API; big-company product info from x.ai, about.fb.com, openai.com, claude.com, and TechCrunch / Reuters reporting.)

Bottom line: this lane is already crowded. Over a dozen projects are using "open-source Grok Bot alternative" in their names alone. Among the open-source ones, OpenMausBot has the most stars, and it's the only one that has publicly disclosed revenue.

### How users came in (growth tactics)

1. **Riding the big-company launch (confirmed)** : Grok Bot 2026-08-11 launched, the repo was created the same day, and it was open-sourced about two hours later. That night the founder replied in a Grok Bot pricing thread: "I'm building an open-source version that uses your existing Claude Code / Codex subscription." The main post got about 495k impressions. They had already been building something similar, and released it right as Grok Bot launched (Omkar's comments on Product Hunt; gtmdaily).

2. **KOL reposts (confirmed)** : Indian account Vaibhav Sisinty reposted it the next morning, "Grok Bot launched today. This guy already built an open source version" (quoted on the website; original post [x.com/VaibhavSisinty/status/2087426362793771026](https://x.com/VaibhavSisinty/status/2087426362793771026)). AI/SEO content channels like Julian Goldie put out several YouTube videos (1.6K to 16K views) and blog posts (juliangoldie.com, juliangoldieaiautomation.com) starting in late August.

3. **SEO and GEO for "open-source X alternative" (confirmed)** : Every time a big company launches something, the README and website add a comparison page. Current ones include Grok Bot vs, Meta Muse alternative, OpenAI dots alternative, Cue alternative, Instinct alternative, and "Which AI agent should I use". GitHub topics are stuffed with grok-bot and grok-bot-alternative. It has also gone through three names: OpenGrokBot, OpenMausBot, MausBot. The channels it self-reported on TrustMRR are SEO, LinkedIn, Instagram, Reddit, X, Discord, Blog, and ASO.

4. **Product Hunt (confirmed)** : 2026-10-13 launched there and placed #7 that day (hunted.space, as relayed by gtmdaily).

5. **GitHub trending flywheel and aggregator sites (confirmed)** : Before and after 10-28, daily star gains passed 900,10-30 and it entered the site-wide daily trending chart. It was then picked up by earlysignal, the adafruit blog (10-28), trendshift, readmex, various "GitHub daily trends" podcasts, French / Portuguese / Chinese (ABAB News) sites, Medium, and self-hosting tutorial sites (exe.dev, swifthost). The late-October +5.8K surge came mainly from this.

6. **LinkedIn founder post and revenue story (possibly)** : Late October, Milind posted on LinkedIn: "Introducing Mausbot 🎉 I was paying $30/mo for Grok Bot…", with a video and 52 comments. gtmdaily ran a piece titled "$7K MRR" on 10-29. The acceleration starting around 10-28 lines up with both events, but there's no way to prove they caused it.

7. **Ecosystem and community (confirmed)** : The iOS version was built by community developers. BotMRR.io offers "install the whole bot team into OpenMausBot in one click" (a marketplace from the same team). boat.dev sponsors cloud desktops. It received credits from Google for Startups and Claude for Startups, and opened GitHub Sponsors.

8. **Not a growth tactic, but related** : Someone launched a meme coin on Solana using the MausBot / MAUS name (findable on solanacompass and OKX), and the project explicitly states in its README that it is not affiliated. There's no evidence the crypto community brought it stars.

### Why it took off

- **Timing** : xAI defined a new category of "a set of bots, each with its own computer." Over the next seven weeks Meta, OpenAI, Manus, and Anthropic followed in quick succession. Each launch sent a wave of people searching for "open-source alternative," and it kept landing at the top of those results.

- **Pricing hits the pain point** : Big-company versions either lock you to their own models or require a separate subscription ($30 to $200). It lets users plug in the Claude Max / ChatGPT subscriptions they already pay for. This is what developers care about most, and user reviews repeatedly say "integrates directly with the CLIs is the best feature" (quoted on the website).

- **Speed to launch and product completeness** : Open-sourced on day one. A Windows version came out at 8-13, an Ubuntu version at 8-20, a mobile version in September, and the version number is already v0.1.140+. The founder has about 4.2K commits and 202 contributors (star-history). It's an app you can install and use right away (a signed and notarized dmg), not a framework. That separates it from developer-framework projects like OpenBot and rakazo.

- **Clear monetization path** : Local use is free. If you want it running when your laptop is closed, you pay for the cloud, and Pro / Max includes Claude credits. By week 11 it had 155 paying subscribers and about $7.2K MRR.

### Differentiation

- Three main differences: (1) it's a chat app, not a framework; (2) it doesn't switch models or require new accounts, and uses the CLI subscriptions users already have; (3) local-first, with an optional paid always-on cloud desktop.

- These differences are real reasons it took off, but not the only ones. "Bring your own model" is offered by nearly every open-source competitor. What actually pulled ahead was: riding the Grok Bot launch buzz on day one to claim the name and search position; a finished product people could download and use; and sustained use of "one comparison page per big-company launch" to ride each new release.

### Visibility

Revenue has been publicly disclosed and widely discussed. Evidence: TrustMRR publishes its MRR; gtmdaily ran a feature on "$7K MRR"; it ranked #2 on GitHub's site-wide trending; adafruit, Medium, multilingual media, and many YouTube videos covered it; the launch post got about 495k impressions.

### Copycats

Yes. There are at least a dozen open-source libraries with the same positioning: AnyModelBot (created 10-27, 2.7K stars), kwant, guilds, lorca, noodle, 5dive, and more. oliexe/paseo-bots describes itself directly as "a Grok Bot / OpenMausBot alternative plugin," already treating it as the reference point. There are also impostor meme coins.

### What others can borrow

- Watch for the day a big company launches a new category, have a half-finished version ready, and open-source it the same day. In the launch post, name the big company's product directly and lead with "no need to buy another subscription."

- Each time a big company follows, write an "open-source X alternative" comparison page to capture SEO / GEO traffic, and make sure the GitHub topics are searchable.

- Tier it: open-source core plus a paid always-on cloud (keeps running when the laptop is closed) to convert free users into subscribers. Publicly disclosing revenue through TrustMRR is itself something that earns coverage.

- Build a desktop app ordinary people can install and use, not just a framework.

### Still unclear

- What the direct trigger was for the acceleration starting 10-28 (the LinkedIn launch post, the gtmdaily revenue story, a big account's repost, or trending's own flywheel) isn't clear; we don't have day-by-day source data. Our X corpus doesn't turn up this product.

- "10k users" and "54k desktop downloads" are self-reported; TrustMRR snapshots at different times don't fully agree (MRR fluctuates between $7.16K and $7.6K).

- Whether the stars include any gaming: the fork rate is 13.8% with many contributors, which looks organic, but we couldn't get the stargazer breakdown (the API returned 404).

- Paid-user retention, and how much of the price advantage remains now that Grok Bot has been folded into X Premium.
