Running Codex on your chat quota: a 17-year-old developer's 'save quota' tool, 15k stars in three months

What it is A desktop launcher plus a local bridge that lets you pick the web ChatGPT (including Pro) directly from Codex's model list and use your chat quota for coding work.

Why it took off OpenAI meters chat and Codex quotas separately, and after GPT-6 launched in September Codex quota ran even shorter. It's the only one of dozens of similar projects that works as 'switch the model in Codex and keep going' with three-platform installers. It spread through the author replying all over X, self-promotion on Reddit, and Japanese and Chinese accounts passing it along.

DHow you could follow it Don't build this one. It closes in December. Learn its playbook instead: find the seam where a platform has 'one subscription, two ledgers', make it an option inside a tool users already have, ship installers in week one, state the risks up front, and then reply to complaint threads with the link.

Grade D: the demand came entirely from a billing gap in OpenAI's pricing. OpenAI has announced it will merge the quotas in December, and dozens of projects already occupy the same space. The packaging and cold-start tactics are worth copying, but the idea itself isn't worth chasing. Word is spreading in a small circle

Since OpenAI folded Codex into ChatGPT, coding quota and chat quota are metered separately: the Codex allowance runs short while the chat allowance goes unused. A European developer who calls himself 17 years old built a bridge that turns the web ChatGPT into a model inside Codex, and the repo hit 15,527 stars in 103 days. But OpenAI has already announced that the two quotas merge in December, so this gap is about to close.

One Reddit post, one unused quota

On Jul 27, 2026, vechen (miuuyy on GitHub, @miu21590 on X) posted on r/codex: "I made Codex run on my existing ChatGPT quota [opensource]". The search results show the post with 139 upvotes and 148 comments. He had created the repo the day before.

Four days later he posted a second thread: 'I made ChatGPT Web (including Pro) a native model in Codex. Now on Windows, macOS and Linux'. The v30 release notes from Jul 1.0.0 say installation dropped from 15 minutes to 2 minutes, and thank everyone for 'so many stars'.

What it is

A desktop launcher plus a local bridge. Install it, log into ChatGPT in the built-in browser, restart Codex once, and the model list gains several entries ending in '(Web)', including GPT-6 Sol and GPT-5.6 Sol at each reasoning level, plus Pro if your account has it.

Once selected, Codex still manages tasks, context, subagents, and approvals. Only each model call gets routed to your logged-in ChatGPT web session. When it needs to read files or run commands, it goes back to the local Codex over MCP. It uses web chat quota and leaves Codex quota alone. The installer bundles its own browser and runtime, so you don't need to install Chrome or Node separately. MIT licensed, free.

Why this summer

The demand was created by OpenAI's billing structure. In Jul 9, Codex merged into the ChatGPT desktop app, but 'chat' and 'Codex' are still tracked as two separate ledgers. Heavy coders hit the Codex cap every week, while the Pro model on the web went largely unused. When GPT-6 Astra launched on Sep 3, it was stronger but burned through Codex quota faster, and the gap got much bigger.

The star curve follows these events:

(08-02 and 09-29 come from web archives; from October on it's GitHub daily snapshots; single-day figures come from Trendshift; the two 'close to' / 'over' figures are the author's own numbers in Discussions)

From Sep 4 to day 29 it gained about 8,500 stars, the main burst. Downloads tell it more clearly: the attachments across 66 releases were downloaded about 296k times on GitHub (including duplicate downloads from auto-update, 11-06), and the author says the launcher alone had 100k+ downloads.

Where the stars came from

No big accounts pushed it, and it never made Hacker News. The 'save quota' hook spread largely on its own.

The author replied under other people's posts. As of Aug 28, he wrote very plainly in Discussion #188: 'almost all of its visibility on X came from my replies under other people's posts', and said posts about the project itself were 'almost nonexistent'. Every day people complained about Codex quota on X, so he dropped the link under them.

He asked users to make videos for it. The same Discussion is titled 'Urgent: help keep ChatGPT Web → Codex workflows from being treated as abuse'. Around then, a new project was promoting itself on X with lines like 'infinite Codex' and 'keep it lowkey', tagging OpenAI staff. Chinese-language accounts were also passing off manual context-pasting as an unlimited-quota trick. He worried this path would be labeled abuse, so he asked users to post short videos or screenshots of their normal use and tag the repo. It was both a vote-gathering push and a way to give the project a respectable framing.

Japanese, Chinese accounts and tutorial sites passed it along. In Aug 30 and Sep 1, the Japanese account 'Codex研究ラボ' promoted it twice with copy like 'ChatGPT subscribers, must-see‼️ You can actually use Codex almost without limits'. On Sep 14, UPGPTs published a full tutorial, 'Codex Out of Quota? Connect ChatGPT Web to Codex'. From Sep 16 to 19, Zhihu, Medium and long Chinese-language X posts kept covering 'using web quota as Codex', overlapping the star peak. But Zhihu and the long Chinese posts mainly promoted another project, WebCodex, and only mentioned this one in passing. I couldn't find which specific post drove the Sep 17 peak.

After October it ran on aggregators. Trendshift (best rank across the site, #8), various GitHub recommendation sites, auto-generated 'GitHub trending' short videos, a Vietnamese Facebook group and Gitee mirrors. By then it was running on residual momentum.

Why it stood out from the pack

There are dozens of projects that let web ChatGPT do Codex's work. They fall into roughly three approaches:

ProjectstarHow
XiaoDuoYa/codex-with-chatgpt7,670ChatGPT plans, Codex executes, hand-off between the two
Waishnav/devspace5,417Connect local projects to ChatGPT via MCP and do the work inside ChatGPT
yyjeqhc/webcodex2,494Same as above, promoted heavily in the Chinese community
agentify-sh/desktop573Have Codex operate the web ChatGPT as an external helper
rcmaker-codex-gateway, wtagent, gpt-web-codex16–36Same route as this one: plug the web model into Codex
lidge-jun/opencodex18.3kA general-purpose 'subscription-to-API' proxy; its model-list wiring and some code come from here, which the author has acknowledged

(stars are from GitHub, October to early November)

It wins on three points:

Users don't have to switch places. Other approaches make you work inside ChatGPT, or shuttle context between two windows. This one just adds a few entries to Codex's model list and leaves everything else unchanged. The other projects on the same route have only dozens of stars each.

It installs like consumer software. Three-platform installers, a bundled runtime, a one-line install or repair command, self-checks, docs in Chinese, English, Japanese and Korean, and demo GIFs. By day three it had installation down to two minutes.

They even built account-ban risk into the product. Temporary chats are on by default, and each round opens a new session. Sep 3 added a "Zero Risk" mode that never touches the web page: the user pastes and sends the messages themselves. They also say outright that they won't do multi-account rotation. People in the Discussion thread have posted screenshots of locked accounts, and these design choices respond to that. On top of that, 66 releases in three months, and they patch it whenever the ChatGPT web app changes.

But the demand itself was handed to it by OpenAI's billing structure. It didn't create it.

The seam is about to close

OpenAI's help center stated in early November that from December, Plus, Pro, and Business quotas will be shared between ChatGPT and Codex, metered by tokens, with only Instant chats excluded. The OpenAI community forum thread 'Please Keep ChatGPT and Codex Usage Limits Separate' already has over a hundred and fifty replies, and the reaction on r/codex was 'then why am I still here'.

The author's pinned post on X reads: 'One month left to use your ChatGPT quota inside Codex before the limits merge'. The current docs have also softened, saying 'subject to that account's limits'. After the merge, the 'doesn't use Codex quota' selling point is gone. What's left is 'use the web Pro model inside Codex', and how much that's worth is unclear.

If it were you

D: Good to know, but I wouldn't build on it. It's a case of a platform billing loophole plus strong execution. The loophole closes in December, and this niche already has dozens of projects, so this spot is taken. Building another one now, the best case is catching the last few weeks.

Who it's for: developers who want to learn how to make an open-source tool spread like a product. Its packaging, risk notes and cold-start tactics are directly reusable.

Who it's not for: anyone thinking of building another "web quota into Codex" tool; or anyone trying the same arbitrage with Claude web plus Claude Code, since on that side the subscription quota is already shared (inferred, verify yourself), so there's no gap to exploit.

How to do it: borrow the playbook, not the topic. ① Watch platform billing changes and product merge announcements for gaps like "one subscription, two ledgers" or "works in the web app but not the CLI"; ② ship it as an option inside the tool users already have, not as a new interface to install, the smaller the change, the easier it spreads; ③ ship installers for all three platforms in the first week and cut install time to two minutes; ④ for gray-area usage, offer a "safest mode" up front and put the risks and what you won't do at the top of the README.

How to get users: follow its cold-start order: first post a "I made…" self-promo in the most relevant subreddit; then reply with the link under posts on X complaining about this pain point every day; once you have a few hundred stars, ask users to post videos of their own usage; Japanese and Chinese AI accounts and tutorial sites will pick it up on their own, provided your hook fits in one sentence, like "Codex, almost unlimited".

When to build before: for this topic, the quota merge in December ends it. The playbook itself isn't affected, but each gap usually has a window of only a few months, so you need a first version out within a week or two before the platform patches it (inferred).

What would mean you're reading it wrong: ① after the December merge, web-model usage clearly drains less quota than Codex and its stars keep rising steadily, meaning the gap isn't closed and there's room to follow; ② OpenAI delays or cancels the merge, reopening the window; ③ after the merge it keeps a group of users by "using Pro models inside Codex" and keeps growing, meaning it's more than an arbitrage tool, and "plugging web-exclusive models into a CLI tool" has demand in itself.

Research report on codex-chatgpt-web (miuuyy/codex-chatgpt-web)

Research day 2026-11-06. Data sources: our github database (repo_profile / repo_day, including wayback backfill points), the hackernews database, x-radar corpus, GitHub API (releases / issues / discussions), Trendshift, and web pages fetched via Jina / Brave search. Reddit was blocked; post data only came from search snippets.

One line

A desktop launcher plus a local bridge: it puts your logged-in ChatGPT web app (including Pro, GPT-6 Sol / 5.6 Sol at each reasoning level) into Codex's native model picker, with "(Web)" appended to the name. Codex still handles tasks, context, tools and approvals; model calls go through an embedded browser driven by Playwright to the ChatGPT web app, and tool calls go back to local Codex via OpenAI's official tunnel-client and MCP. It uses web chat quota, so it doesn't spend Codex quota. Author vechen (GitHub miuuyy, X @miu21590, based in Europe, self-described age 17, "metacoder, reverse engineer & Unity developer"), an indie developer who maintains it solo.

Verdict

It took off because of a time-limited quota arbitrage window: 2026-07-09 OpenAI folded Codex into the ChatGPT desktop app, but "chat" and "Codex/Work" quotas are counted separately. Heavy coders ran short on Codex quota, while web chat quota went unused month after month. In early September GPT-6 Astra launched, stronger but burning Codex quota faster, which widened the gap. Dozens of projects were doing "let web ChatGPT do Codex's work", but this one is the only one that made it "switch the model inside Codex and keep working": no workflow change, double-click the installer, log in, pick a model, two minutes. Its differentiators (native model picker + three-platform installers + frequent bug fixes) do explain why it got the most stars in its category; but the stars mainly came from the "saves quota" hook spreading organically on Reddit, Japanese/Chinese X, Medium and tutorial sites, not from any big account.

The window is closing: around 11-01 OpenAI announced in its help center that from December, ChatGPT and Codex will share one quota for Plus / Pro / Business (only Instant is excluded). The author's own pinned X post said "one month left before the merge, use it now". So this is a case of "platform rule loophole + execution", not a product that can be run long-term.

Last 7 days +279, the first 7 days +431; daily gains have slowed from September's 200–800 to 20–60.
  • The author's own timestamps: 08-28 Discussion #188 says "over 1,500 stars"; 09-04 Discussion #309 says "close to 4,300 stars". So from Sep 4 to 29 daily gains totaled about 8,500 stars; that was the main burst.
  • Daily Trendshift numbers (9-07 to 11-06, +10,452 stars total): 9-07 +395,9-14 +297, 9-16 +551, 9-17 +839 (peak), 9-18 +601; then through late September it ran 200–450 per day, and by early October it fell below 100. Its best site-wide Trendshift rank was #8 (9-17), and its best TypeScript rank was #2. It never made GitHub's official trending (our database trending_days_any=0), but repos younger than 60 days usually can't make it, so that doesn't mean much.
  • Downloads: GitHub Releases across 66 versions total about 296k downloads (including repeat downloads from auto-update; GitHub API); the author's homepage says "100,000+ launcher downloads". v5.0.0 (9-03, the same day GPT-6 Astra launched) had 22k as a single release, v5.0.6 (9-08) 26k, v5.0.8 (9-16) 28k, v6.0.0 (9-23) 29k.
  • Iteration: 3 releases over 66 months, 353 author commits, issue/PR numbers have reached 972, and 85 Discussions. Users are actually using it and reporting bugs.

Competitors

"Make web ChatGPT do Codex's work" is a crowded direction, but the approaches split three ways:

  1. Turn the web model into a model inside Codex (this one): same-approach projects are tiny: runchance/rcmaker-codex-gateway 36 stars (10-09), m4j2rpf766-crypto/gpt-web-codex 16 stars, XiXian42/wtagent 21 stars, leeguooooo/chatgpt-use 57 stars.
  2. Expose local projects to web ChatGPT via MCP so you work inside ChatGPT: Waishnav/devspace 5,417 stars (06-14), yyjeqhc/webcodex 2,494 stars (05-28, the WebCodex pushed heavily in Chinese circles), MCPX, devnoname120/codexify 98 stars, int04/ChatCmd.
  3. ChatGPT plans, Codex executes / Codex skills delegate work to the web: XiaoDuoYa/codex-with-chatgpt 7,670 stars (08-28), Nhahan/WebGPT 138 stars, anightmonarch/codex-bridge-chatgpt 152 stars, adamallcock/codex-chatgpt-control 406 stars, agentify-sh/desktop 573 stars.
  4. Adjacent "subscription-to-API" proxies: router-for-me/CLIProxyAPI 57.8k, lidge-jun/opencodex 18.3k (the author admits the model-picker integration idea and some MIT code came from OpenCodex), zhishile/codex-auth-helper 20.4k.
  5. Big-company move: OpenAI's own ChatGPT Work (07-09) is already "Codex on the web," but it shares the agentic quota with Codex; from December, chat quota gets merged in too, which effectively closes this arbitrage.

Differentiation

  • Smallest change surface: other tools have you go into ChatGPT to work or shuttle context between two windows; this one keeps you in Codex, and only the model list gets new entries. Codex tasks, context compaction, subagents, images, and approvals all stay the same. The author pitches it this way in #188 too: "the most complete and native implementation of this idea."
  • Installs like a consumer app: installers for three platforms, bundled browser and runtime (no Node/Chrome install needed), one-line curl install/repair, a doctor self-check, a README in four languages, a hero image and demo GIF.
  • Productizes the account-ban risk: Temporary Chat on by default, a new conversation each turn; 9-03 adds a "Zero Risk" mode (doesn't touch the page; the user pastes and sends themselves), directly answering the "got my account locked" reports (in #188 a user posted a screenshot of a locked account).
  • Maintenance load: 3 months, 66 releases; every ChatGPT web redesign and Codex update has to be chased.

These differentiators are why it got the most stars in its category (the other projects on the same route are in double digits), but the demand itself comes from the quota policy, not from it.

Copycats

There are some, but they're small: wtagent ("Turn ChatGPT Web (including Pro) into Codex," wording nearly copied), rcmaker-codex-gateway ("Use ChatGPT Web models inside Codex"), gpt-web-codex, codexify. Plus verbatim forks by matthwm, SammyC673, MarkSong535, and others.

Visibility

It's spreading in small circles: r/codex, Japanese and Chinese AI accounts, Medium, tutorial sites, aggregator sites. Not posted on HN; no big X reposts or standalone mainstream tech coverage found. The quota-merge news (The New Stack, TechRepublic, etc.) covers OpenAI's policy and doesn't name it. It's an open-source tool, free, with no revenue to disclose.

What others can borrow

  • Find the platform-rule gap where "one subscription, two ledgers" exists, and build it as an extra option inside the user's existing tool, rather than opening a new interface.
  • Turn an open-source tool into a consumer product: installers, bundled runtime, self-check, multilingual README, demo GIF.
  • Build a "compliance narrative" ahead of the gray-area usage: Zero Risk mode, Temporary Chat on by default, explicitly say no multi-account rotation, and ask users to publicly show "legitimate usage."
  • The same play could move to Claude web → Claude Code, or Gemini web → Gemini CLI, but only if quota is counted separately there too, and you accept the platform could close it at any time.

Still unclear

  • The specific source of the 9-16~18 peak (possibly a big Chinese or Japanese X account, or a Medium post; not in the x-radar corpus).
  • The final numbers and referral traffic from the two Reddit posts (Reddit blocks scraping; only search snippets available).
  • How much use is left after the December quota merge: if web models draw from the same quota by token, the "save Codex quota" selling point disappears, leaving only "use Pro models inside Codex."
  • How many of the 296k downloads are duplicate downloads from auto-updates; actual active users are unknown.
