A TikTok with only the caption "github mochiiwuff", 1.61M views: a 22-year-old developer in Rouen turned Capri into a Claude Code narrator
What it is A free Windows desktop pet that puts Capri from *Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2* on your desktop and animates what Claude Code and Codex are doing at each step: she chases your cursor when it needs permission, takes hits when there's an error, and unleashes a big finish when the task is done.
Why it blew up In the week the character peaked, the author posted a demo video with 1.61M views, captioned only "github mochiiwuff." Fans went straight to the repo and starred it; the positioning as "a narrator for Claude Code" also got developer media to cover it, bringing long-tail traffic.
CHow you could follow it Don't make another Capri; build a desktop-pet base where characters can be swapped fast and hooks into coding agents (filling in what it didn't do: Cursor, Gemini CLI, Mac). When the next viral character drops, reskin it that same day, record a short video yourself, and keep only your GitHub username in the caption.
- Data (updated daily) · Repo created 2026-10-25 · 592 stars · 7 days +138

Oct 25, five days after *Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2* launched, a newly created TikTok account posted a 25-second screen recording: the show's Capri climbs in from the screen edge and narrates what Claude Code is doing. The caption is just two words: "github mochiiwuff." The video hit 1.61M views, and two days later the repo gained 182 stars in a single day on GitHub. The same week at least a dozen Capri desktop-pet projects appeared; its star count ranked first, yet its downloads were a tenth of its rivals'. Anyone who wants open-source projects to earn stars should look at how it funneled a crowd of anime fans onto a repo page.
A 25-second screen recording, two words in the caption
Oct 25 18:21 (UTC), TikTok account @leregardvide posted the video with the tags #cyberpunkedgerunner #claude #capri #github. As of 11-06, it had 1.61M views, 353k likes, and 39k shares (TikTok, 11-06).
The account has posted only 4 videos, all of Capri. Its bio reads "get capri on your desktop / github : mochiiwuff / join my discord server." The first post went up on 10-25 01:19 UTC, 267k views, 09:07 hours before the GitHub repo was created that same day 8. In other words, the demo went out before the code. The author never publicly said the account was his, but the bio and Discord both point to him, so it's a reasonable inference.
The most-liked comments aren't about features: "lowk a virus but its fine" (25k likes), "Capri malware is fine… I mean hey it's Capri right" (11k likes), and "TELL ME WHERE I CAN FIND IT" (2,551 likes). The answer is in the caption: search for mochiiwuff on GitHub. Some weren't sold, "Was so excited until I saw #claude" and "can i use her without claude," each with dozens of likes. That suggests most viewers were anime fans, not programmers.
The author, mochiiwuff, lives in Rouen, France, and says he is 22 years old. His GitHub account was registered 2026 in August; before this he had only small projects like a YouTube Music client, none with more than 9 stars.
What it is
A Windows desktop pet built in Electron, free. The first line of the README makes the positioning clear: Capri "lives on your desktop and tells you what your AI coding tool is doing: Claude Code, Codex, or Antigravity."
It works by installing hooks into configs like ~/.claude/settings.json and ~/.codex/hooks.json, sending each agent action to the local machine, and then Capri acts it out:
- While the agent works, a scrolling caption appears above her head:
EDITS gigs.ts,RUNS npm test; - When the agent asks you for permission, she teleports to your cursor and stays there; if you're in another window, she flies over to the Claude window and points at it with her finger;
- When a command fails, she takes a hit, the screen flickers with glitch effects, and then she points to the exact line that went wrong;
- When the task is done, she moves to the middle of the screen for a victory animation, laughs, and pops up a summary card (
12 actions · 3 files changed · 2m 14s).
The rest is what you'd expect from a desktop pet, done with care: she sits on top of windows swinging her legs, peeks in from the screen edge, gets flung off and cracks the screen, "possesses" your windows, and falls asleep after 10 minutes idle. Every animation is hand-drawn frame by frame, so a recording of it is already a short video.
Two things to know: after v0.4.3 the code switched from MIT to PolyForm Noncommercial, though the README still says "free, never sold"; and the character itself belongs to the rights holder, not to the code license.
Where the stars came from: the landing page is the repo, not a download button
GitHub daily log (11-06):
| Date | Cumulative stars | Added that day |
|---|---|---|
| 10-26 | 24 | |
| 10-27 | 206 | +182 |
| 10-28 | 351 | +145 |
| 10-31 | 432 | Daily +20~30 |
| 11-06 | 557 (live that day 581, forks 113) | +19 |
The peak came about 30 hours after a 1.61M-view video. Tech media came later: when MindPattern 10-27 covered it, it already had 288 stars; developers posting screenshots on LinkedIn came in at 10-28, and LockerGnome's long piece at 10-31. So most of these stars came from people on TikTok who went and clicked on their own.
The key is those two words. Same character, same kind of video: lachydotmcg shipped a day earlier, and her caption said "free in my bio," sending people to the download page. Installer downloads: about 180k, stars: about 400. mochiiwuff's caption told people to search the name on GitHub, so they landed on the repo page, where the stars sit right at the top. Stars: 581,13, and the downloads across its releases add up to about 19k (GitHub Releases, 11-06). Discord: about 2,600 people. One creator gets users, the other gets stars. The difference is which page the video sent people to.
The long tail of stars came from positioning. Of the dozen-plus projects from the same IP, most were "chatty desktop pets"; only this one was "a narrator for Claude Code," so developer media wrote about it. Later, people independently filmed download tutorials (one Thai video got 43k views), and others ported it to Mac and phones. A fork rate of 19% suggests the code is easy to modify, and many people took it to swap characters and voices.
The author also moved fast: from 10-25 to 11-03 they made 105 commits and shipped 13 releases, with 6 releases in a single day between 10-26 and 10-27. They've stopped updating since 11-03, but the stars still climb by a dozen or two a day.
Who it's competing with
Both directions are crowded:
| Project | Scale (11-06) | How it differs |
|---|---|---|
| lachydotmcg/capri-desktop | 408 stars, about 180k downloads, 14k Discord members | The same character, aimed at fans, with the creator posting videos daily |
| ChannelCooperStart/capri-ai and three or four others | 371 / 287 / 32 stars | New accounts, a single repo, near-identical bios, looks like name-squatting (malicious intent not verified) |
| kystt29/capricorn and six or seven others | 30~110 stars | Small projects on the same topic |
| rullerzhou-afk/clawd-on-desk | 6,675 stars (launched in March) | Pixel pets watching Claude Code / Codex / Cursor, no IP, the leader of this category |
| CodeIsland, HachimoDock, and others | 400~2,500 stars | Also monitor agent status, but no popular character |
| Claude Code /buddy, Codex Pets | Built in | Pets made by Anthropic and OpenAI themselves, which either don't run on the desktop or have no characters |
"Give your coding agent a desktop pet" isn't new: a project with 6k stars already existed half a year ago, and both big companies have built one. mochiiwuff wins at the intersection: the hottest character of the week, paired with the tool programmers use every day.
Risks
- Copyright: the characters belong to CD PROJEKT RED and the animation rights holder, and the README says "taken down on rights holder request." Whether the 11-03 halt in updates is related, I don't know.
- Heat follows the show: once the show's buzz fades, how much daily growth is left? Watch for another month.
- Viral feel: the most-liked comment is "this is a virus," more name-squatting repos keep appearing, and unsigned exes get flagged by antivirus software.
If it were you
Verdict: Capri is already saturated, so building another one now makes no sense. What's worth copying is the combination: a hot new character × a tool programmers are using, post the demo video first, and keep only the GitHub username in the caption. This gets stars far more efficiently than "free download," but it depends on betting on the next breakout character and shipping within the first few days.
Who it suits: frontend or Electron developers who can do transparent windows and frame-by-frame animation; people already scrolling anime TikTok who are willing to screen-record and post; anyone with a base that hooks into agents and can swap in a new character in one evening.
Who it doesn't suit: people who don't post short videos and just hope passers-by star the repo (the others on this topic that tried it mostly stalled at a few dozen stars); people who care about copyright and don't want the project pulled at any time; people who want long-term maintenance and to build reputation through the project, since this kind of hype usually lasts only a few weeks.
How to do it:
- Build a character-agnostic base first: hook into Claude Code and Codex, then add Cursor, Windsurf and Gemini CLI, which the README itself marks "not yet"; make a polished animation for each of three moments: permission requests, errors, and completion.
- Watch TikTok and Reddit in the first week after a new anime, show, or game launches for wish posts like "someone should make" or "desktop mate"; when a character takes off, re-skin the project the same day.
- Switching audiences also works: anime communities in other languages, VTuber communities, or a Mac version (the original only supports Windows, and the Mac port was done by someone else).
How to get users: the main channel is self-shot short screen-recorded videos, 25 seconds long, picking the most dramatic moments (she chases the mouse on a permission request, unleashes a big move when a task finishes); the caption only says "github your-username" to drop people on the repo page. Put an animated GIF at the top of the README. Once the stars are rolling, post an article like "I made an animated narrator for Claude Code" in developer communities to catch the long tail.
When is "before": not a specific date, but "the first five days after the character blows up." From the show's release to mochiiwuff's release was 5 days, and from day 5 same-topic projects started piling up; entering a week later means only the name-squatting leftovers are left.
Signs you read it wrong: ① the next breakout character appears and within a week no "character × coding agent" project passes 200 stars, meaning this time was Capri's luck; ② rights holders begin mass takedowns of fan desktop pets; ③ Claude Code and Codex's official pets add support for custom characters and animations, leaving no room for third-party desktop pets.

mochiiwuff/capri-desktop: why it took off
Research date 2026-11-06. Data card: repo age 2026-10-25,12 days, 557 stars / 107 forks (GitHub API live that day 581 / 113), +157 over the last 7 days, peak single day +182 (10-27).
One line
After Capri, the character from "Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2" (released on Netflix 10-20), blew up, a 22-year-old developer named mochiiwuff in Rouen, France, built an Electron Capri desktop pet. He opened a new TikTok account, @leregardvide, with the bio "github : mochiiwuff," and posted a demo video that got 1.61M views, 350k likes and 39k shares on 10-25, sending anime fans straight to the GitHub repo. So most of the stars came from a surge over two or three days, not from slow spread among programmers. The pitch is "a narrator that moves around for Claude Code / Codex / Antigravity," and that's why developer media like LockerGnome and MindPattern wrote about it, which is where the long-tail stars came from. The initial breakout, though, came from IP heat plus one viral video.
What it is
Capri is a Windows desktop pet built with Electron. It installs async hooks in ~/.claude/settings.json, ~/.codex/hooks.json and ~/.gemini/config/hooks.json, which only send events to 127.0.0.1, and then acts out each of the agent's actions:
- A scrolling bar above her head shows what's currently happening (
EDITS gigs.ts,RUNS npm test). - When the agent needs permission, she teleports next to the mouse, or points at the window Claude is in.
- On command failure she gets a hit reaction and points to the exact line that broke.
- When a task finishes she plays a victory animation with a summary card (
12 actions · 3 files changed · 2m 14s). - A daily "mission report" card you can screenshot.
On top of that there's a whole pile of desktop-pet behaviors: she sits on your window edges, peeks from the screen edge, gets thrown and cracks the screen, "possesses" windows, reacts when the CPU overheats, to plugging and unplugging power, to USB insertion, and gets jealous when she sees you open ChatGPT. Chat can run through local Ollama or Pollinations, or with your own key. She can also open apps, find files, and play music for you.
- License: after v0.4.3 it changed from MIT to PolyForm Noncommercial; the character assets aren't covered by the code license.
- Author: mochiiwuff, a GitHub account registered only 2026-08, self-described as a "22y/o furry" based in Rouen. Previously only small projects like a YouTube Music client, none over 9 stars.

| Codex Pets | Big-company features | Mid-2026 (OpenAI community discussion in July) | Built in, with community galleries such as petdex (4,328 stars) and awesome-codex-pet (1,252 stars) | Official animated pets that reflect session state; no character IP, and not cross-agent. |
| Desktop Mate | Steam | 2025 | Sells official character DLC | Licensed paid desktop pet, doesn't connect to coding agents |
Bottom line: the category isn't new and is already crowded. There are coding agent desktop pets with 6k stars like clawd-on-desk, and Anthropic and OpenAI both shipped official pets. Over the same week a dozen Capri projects with the same IP appeared. mochiiwuff sits where the two intersect: the hottest anime character that week, wired into coding agent hooks.
Growth channels
- Likely the author's own TikTok account (the account is confirmed, the author's identity is unverified): @leregardvide, 4 videos totaling about 2.36M views. The main one got 1.61M views with only the caption "github mochiiwuff", telling viewers to search GitHub themselves, so the traffic turned directly into GitHub visits and stars.
- Third-party creators reposting organically (confirmed): @phantom_wick, 300k views, tagged "by mochiiwuff"; other download tutorials came from @digitus84, @norncode (Thai), @mtghozt (Spanish), and @jdalterjd. TikTok auto-generated a "Capri Desktop Mate Mochiiwuff" hashtag page.
- IP heat (confirmed): the release came 5 days after the show premiered; r/Edgerunners had lots of Capri desktop pet posts at the same time, and someone asked "is there a Capri desktop pet without AI?"
- Dev media / social (confirmed, but past the peak): MindPattern 10-27 listed it (288 stars at the time), LinkedIn 10-28 developers posting about it, a long LockerGnome 10-31 write-up, plus a YouTube architecture breakdown and listings on rising.dev and githubtree. These bring in a long tail and cemented its position as a "Claude Code companion."
- Discord (confirmed): about 2,600 members, with the link on the GitHub profile and the TikTok bio.
- Not found: HN (Algolia finds nothing; the card mentions a post but it's dead), X (x-radar: 0 posts in 30 days), and paid ads.
Why it took off
- Timing: during the week the character peaked, it was among the first versions anyone could download (one day after lachy's), catching the peak demand for "who's making a Capri desktop pet".
- One hit video set the trajectory: about 1.61 hours after the 10-25M-view video (18:21 30), stars jumped from 24 to 206. MindPattern logged it at 10-27 stars with 288, and tech media came after that.
- The video's call to action pointed straight at GitHub: lachy's video said "free in my bio" and sent people to the website to download; mochiiwuff's video only said "github mochiiwuff", so viewers landed on the repo page and starred it on the way. This explains why it got fewer downloads but more stars.
- The product itself has a geek hook: "performing what Claude Code is doing" is the most dev-discussable pitch among the same-IP projects, which is why developer media wrote about it and why the long-tail stars came in. The animation is detailed (frame-by-frame entrances, victory, possession, sleep), and the screen recordings look great.
- fork rate is high (19%): people port it to Mac and phones, swap voices and characters. All of that happens in forks, which means the code structure is easy to modify.
Differentiation
There are a dozen-plus Capri projects with the same IP, mostly "desktop pets that chat." This one is different: it turns coding agent hook events into character performance (permission requests chase the cursor, errors trigger a hurt reaction, completion plays a victory animation, a task report card appears). Compared with clawd-on-desk, the official /buddy, and Codex Pets, its edge is using the hottest anime character of the week, with much finer animation. Differentiation is half the reason: what got it noticed is the IP plus a TikTok hit, which lachy and others also had. But the "Claude Code narrator" positioning let it beat same-IP rivals on GitHub and in dev media, and it ranks first in stars among same-topic repos. Conversely, pure fan users mostly went to lachy's version (about 10x its downloads).
Visibility
It's spreading in small circles. The TikTok anime crowd has a few million-view videos; on the dev side there's LockerGnome, MindPattern, LinkedIn posts and YouTube breakdowns, but no major X accounts, no HN front page, no mainstream tech press. The project is non-commercial fan work with no revenue.
Copycats
Yes, and plenty of them. The same-IP name-squatting repos are in the competitor table (ChannelCooperStart/capri-ai, etc.). Forks built on it include a macOS port on r/Edgerunners and phone ports by TikTok @defamakegems and @traidephoathanh. 113 forks in total.
What others can borrow
- "Hot new character × the dev tool programmers are actually using": wire IP heat into the developer tooling hooks. It feeds both fan traffic and developer traffic, and the latter brings media coverage and long-tail stars.
- Post the video before the code: test the heat first, keep the caption to just "github <username>," and send the traffic straight to the repo page.
- Repeat the play on other agents: the README itself says Cursor, Windsurf and Gemini CLI are "not yet." You could also switch to the next hot character.
- Make the animation good enough to record and share: every state should be a short clip that stands on its own.
Uncertain
- Whether @leregardvide is the author: the bio and Discord both point to him, but there's no public claim.
- The exact time of the 10-26 snapshot (24 stars) is unclear, and the precise lag between the viral video and the star peak is unverified. The stargazer timestamp endpoint returned 404, so it couldn't be retrieved.
- Whether 11-03 stopped updating because the author moved on or out of copyright fear is unknown. The attitudes of CD PROJEKT RED / Netflix / Trigger are unclear; the README says "will be taken down if the rights holder requests it."
- The card mentions the HN post is dead; the original post could not be found in this search.
- Whether the name-squatting repos are malicious has not been verified.
