"Migration failed, want to roll back?": agentring, which lets an AI agent call you on the phone. 289 stars in two weeks, and the iPhone half is still empty

What it is An open-source tool. When an AI agent gets stuck or needs your call, it makes your Android phone ring like a real incoming call. A voice AI tells you what's going on, then turns your spoken answer into text and hands it back to the agent.

Why it took off Agents like Claude Code that run unattended for hours often get stuck on a question and wait for a human. The author first posted on LinkedIn and r/ClaudeCode with a real screen recording of "migration fails → lock-screen call → one sentence decides." The line "no phone number, no Twilio, no per-minute fees" was copied and reposted by a dozen-plus sites.

BHow you could compete: build the iPhone version it doesn't have (CallKit + VoIP push, compatible with its protocol), or ship a rules pack for "when should I call instead of text"; then post a real screen recording to r/ClaudeCode and X, same playbook it used.

Grade B: the iPhone version and a "don't call too much" rule set are clear gaps, and the author has no follower traffic others can't match. But demand itself is small (the forerunner call-me took 10 months to reach 2,700 stars, and half the comments say a notification is enough). If the official tools add incoming-call alerts, this category gets squeezed. What the niche is buzzing about

A Spanish developer found Twilio required phone numbers, verification, and per-minute billing, so he wrote an open-source tool that lets Claude Code call your phone directly over VoIP. He built the repo in Oct 23, and it had 6 289 stars by Nov. Someone had already reached 10 stars in this category 2,700 months earlier, so he's the latecomer. Below: how it won its slice, where the stars came from, and what gaps are left.

A 48-second phone call

In agentring's demo video, Claude Code is running a billing database migration, and migration #43 fails. It calls a tool named call, and a Pixel 6 locked on the desk lights up full-screen like an incoming call. Answer it, and a voice AI says:

"Hi, I'm calling because the billing migration is stuck. Migration #43 failed, and over two thousand legacy customers have no plan assigned. Do you want to roll back, or patch in the old plans and rerun it?"

The person replies "patch in the old plans and rerun it," the call ends, and that sentence becomes text sent back to Claude Code, which keeps working.

The author, Juan Carlos Cavero Gracia (mutonby on GitHub), posted this video on his Spanish-language LinkedIn around Oct 28. The opening line: "Setting up VoIP calls for AI agents in Spain is a pain. Twilio wants numbers, verification, paperwork; the WhatsApp and Telegram APIs are hard to work with; and in the end you pay per minute for something only you use." The post got 210 reactions and 39 comments (LinkedIn post page, 11-06). In the post he says he now uses it like this: if a serious vulnerability affecting him shows up on X, a server has a security problem, an important email arrives, or something breaks, the agent calls him. "Finding the problem and sending a message isn't enough; your phone has to ring."

What it is

A self-hosted open-source suite (Apache-2.0) with four parts:

  • Android app: pair by scanning a QR code. It uses the system's native call screen, rings on the lock screen and in Doze power-saving mode, and emergency calls can get through Do Not Disturb.
  • Relay service: runs on your own server and handles pairing, messages, and push. Calls wake the phone through Firebase push, and call audio runs through a self-hosted LiveKit.
  • Local daemon: installed on the machine running the agent. It provides an MCP service and a command line. The agent gets three tools: send_message, get_replies, and call.
  • Voice AI: defaults to Gemini Live (with a free tier), and you can switch to OpenAI Realtime, Grok Voice, or Phonic. The voice AI does the talking; the actual judgment stays with your agent.

It also works in reverse: in the app, tap "call the agent," ask "what does CI say?", and the voice AI asks your local Claude Code / Codex, then reads the answer back once it's ready. If you hang up, it turns into a message. Calls you don't pick up also become messages you can reply to right from the notification shade.

Connecting Claude Code takes one line: claude mcp add agentring -- agentring mcp. Setup instructions are listed for Codex, opencode, OpenClaw, Hermes, n8n, and more. If you don't want to run your own server, there's a hosted version at agentring.io: the free tier needs no card, Pro is $9/month, and revenue isn't public.

The limits are stated plainly: Android only. The README says it has only been tested on one phone (Pixel 6, Android 16).

(GitHub daily stars; no day-by-day numbers before 10-30)

The first 155 are probably from the launch window, 10-28 to 10-30; this is inferred. In time order, these are the sources I could find:

  1. The author's LinkedIn (around 10-28), in Spanish; his profile shows over ten thousand followers.
  2. Reddit r/ClaudeCode (around 10-29): titled "My Claude Code now calls my phone when it needs me. No Twilio, no …", and the opener is "I handed Claude Code a long task and walked away. When I came back it had asked a question and had been waiting there for an hour." This is probably the biggest source in the first week, inferred.
  3. The comments fought it out: one side said "Claude Code already has push notifications, ntfy gets you to your phone with one curl, and dev work is visual, I need to see the screen." Others worried about "a call every two minutes." The other side said "dozens of notifications a day, half of them I never see, a call is what cuts through." One person put it best: a useful call is a decision like "migration failed, two options" that changes the next hour, not "something went wrong, go check your computer" (Japanese rewrite site techfutureatlas, 10-30). The argument itself was the exposure.
  4. Long-tail reposts (10-28 to 11-04): a dozen or so aggregator sites, auto-written tech blogs, and small blogs in Chinese, Japanese, and Spanish, nearly all copying "no phone number, no Twilio, no per-minute fees." Someone submitted it to HN and it got 1 points.
  5. The author's own blog: 11-01, "Testing phone calls with Phonic, Grok Voice, and Gemini Live," and 11-05, "Making calls on a Mac with local models: Gemma 4, Qwen3, Ministral," both hands-on comparisons aimed at long-tail search.
  6. AI short-video creator "comment for the tutorial" posts (from 11-04): Julian Goldie posted a Reel saying "Comment HOTLINE and I'll send you the free tutorial… search agentring on GitHub" (11 likes and 28 comments on Facebook). But after 11-04 daily gains were only 9 to 13, so the lift was limited.

I couldn't find the cause of the +39 on 11-03. No ads, Product Hunt launch, TikTok, or big X account retweets were visible.

The author isn't a purely technical person who went viral by chance. His main business is SaaS Upload-Post (one-click social media distribution API), and he has built small open-source tools before, such as shortcast (396 stars). He clearly knows how to use an open-source project as an acquisition channel.

(GitHub,11-06)

The difference agentring can state clearly: no phone network (zero numbers, zero Twilio, zero per-minute fees), native lock-screen calls, two-way, and works with any agent. "No Twilio" is the hook in every post, and it gives the project something new to say in a category where call-me already exists.

But its volume is a tenth of call-me's, and over half the commenters think a notification is enough. "An agent calling me" is itself a small need. The differentiation earned it incremental traffic, and the stars mostly came from the author's own distribution. I haven't seen anyone build on it yet.

If it were you

Verdict: B. Worth a try, the gaps are clear, but the ceiling is low. The most obvious gap is iPhone: agentring is Android-only and has only been tested on one Pixel, and many people who write code use iPhones. The weaknesses are small demand (call-me has been around for 10 months and has only 2,700 stars) and the risk that Anthropic's official push notifications add incoming calls someday, which would squeeze this whole category.

Good fit for: developers who can write iOS (CallKit / PushKit), or people who already have a small tool around agents and want a second project that a single screen recording can explain.

Not a good fit for: people hoping to turn this into a project with thousands of stars, or people who would just copy the Android version without adding anything new. The same slogan has already been reposted by over a dozen sites, so a second round won't feel fresh.

How to do it, ranked by how worthwhile:

  1. Build the iPhone version: native calls via CallKit + VoIP push, so they ring on the lock screen. Pairing and the MCP tool names can stay compatible with agentring's protocol (its protocol docs are public). Title it "agentring for iPhone" or "Your Claude Code can now call your iPhone." Watch Apple's limits on VoIP push (an incoming push must show a call immediately), and note that CallKit isn't usable in the China storefront.
  2. Do what it hasn't done well: decide when to call: the comments weren't really fighting over whether to call, but over calling too often. Build a tiered rule set (things that can wait go as messages, calls are for when the agent is stuck and nobody answers, only live incidents break through Do Not Disturb), plus "only call for decisions": a call has to offer two or three options. This could be an agent skill or rule pack that works with both agentring and call-me.
  3. Change the channel: Chinese developers can't use Google push, so build a version over WeCom / Feishu voice calls or Telegram calls, and target that audience for stars.

How to get traction: follow the same playbook. Record a real screen capture (something breaks → phone rings on the lock screen → one sentence decides → the agent keeps going), open with a personal pain point ("It waited an hour for me"), and post on r/ClaudeCode, your native-language communities, and X at the same time. A week later, publish a hands-on comparison blog (latency of several voice models, call success rates on iOS vs Android) to feed the repost sites.

When to act: the sooner the better, ideally before the end of 2026. The agentring author is already building a hosted version and is on Google Play; an iOS version is likely on the roadmap (inference). Anthropic's official phone push features are also rolling out step by step.

Signs we got it wrong: ① agentring ships an iOS version first, so entry 1 is basically gone and only 2 and 3 remain; ② Claude Code or Codex officially adds "call me" notifications, which would cool this category; ③ conversely, if agentring or call-me daily stars climb back to dozens, or it hits the HN front page within the next month, "agents calling people" is bigger than estimated and the ceiling should go up.

mutonby/agentring: why it works

Lets AI agents (Claude Code / Codex / OpenClaw / Hermes, etc.) place a real phone call to your Android phone over VoIP: it rings on the lock screen like an incoming call, a real-time voice AI talks the issue through with you, and the transcript goes back to the agent to keep working. You can also call the agent from the app. Self-hosted, Apache-2.0, no phone number and no Twilio. A hosted version, agentring.io, is also available (free tier + Pro at $9/month).

Note: there were no daily observations before 10-30 (the tracker started on 10-28, and the repo already had 155 stars when it entered the list), so most of the first week's 0→155 likely happened in the launch window around 10-28–10-30 (inference; stargazer timestamps couldn't be pulled because the GitHub API quota ran out, unverified). In scale it's a "small spike": total only one-tenth of call-me (2.7k), with a daily peak of 39.

Conclusion: the category isn't new (call-me got 2.7k stars 10 months ago); agentring is a late entrant, differentiating on "no number / no Twilio + native lock-screen calls + two-way + any harness."

3. Growth channels: where users came from (by timeline)

  1. The founder's own LinkedIn (Spanish), about 10-28: "Setting up VoIP calls for AI agents in Spain was a hassle; Twilio wants a number, verification, paperwork… so I built agentring," with a real demo video (failed migration → lock-screen call → verbal decision → agent continues). 39 comments; the founder's page shows 10,560 followers. LinkedIn
  2. HN: 10-28, submitted by handfuloflight as "Agent Ring: Your agent can call you"; only 1 points, not a source. HN 50279324
  3. Reddit r/ClaudeCode (about 10-29): "My Claude Code now calls my phone when it needs me. No Twilio, no …". The pain-point narrative is "Claude Code asked a question, I walked away, and it sat stuck for an hour." The comments turned into a debate between "phone call vs notifications are enough (ntfy / Remote Control push)," and some people recommended similar projects. The debate itself is exposure. The original post was blocked by anti-scraping, so the content comes from the Japanese retelling by techfutureatlas. This was likely the main source of stars in the first week (inference).
  4. Long tail of aggregators / automated media (10-28 to 11-04): whatpeoplemade, wpnews, delegatedto.ai, MCP Radar, NicheDB, Lǐyīng news (Chinese), lvruan (Chinese), techfutureatlas (Japanese), GlobeWire Daily (11-03 and 11-04 articles), an aiindigo tutorial (11-04), Spanish blogs fluyeporlaweb / goyohernandez (10-30, 10-31). On X, @algotrading_ios posted a long technical breakdown thread (10-29). Most of this is automated or semi-automated content. It shows the topic is "easy to write about" and spread widely, but each piece brought little traffic.
  5. The founder's own content marketing: agentring.io blog posts 11-01 "Phonic vs Grok Voice vs Gemini Live on a phone call" and 11-05 "Local voice AI on a phone call: Gemma 4, Qwen3, Ministral on a Mac". These are comparison-style SEO pieces based on hands-on tests. The hosted version and the Google Play launch went live at the same time.
  6. Short-form AI creators running "comment for the tutorial" (starting 11-04): Julian Goldie (an SEO/AI account) posted a Reel on Instagram/Facebook, "Comment HOTLINE and I'll send you the free setup … Search agentring on GitHub" (FB shows 11 likes, 28 comments). @ai.radar.daily posted a Reel saying "Comment CALLBACK." One YouTube Short had 124 views. The timing lines up with this, but daily stars after 11-04 were only 9–13, so the lift to stars was limited.
  7. The cause of the +39 peak on 11-03 is unknown (possibly the GlobeWire coverage, the v0.2.0 release, or a repost somewhere; unverified).

Not found: paid promotion, Product Hunt, TikTok content (a TikHub search for agentring returned nothing), or reposts by big X accounts (no hits in the local x-radar corpus).

4. Who the founder is (resources)

Juan Carlos Cavero Gracia (GitHub mutonby, X @fotoexamen, Spain). His profile links to his SaaS Upload-Post (a one-click social media distribution API). He's an old hand at "open-source tools as lead generation": shortcast (macOS auto-cut short videos, 396 stars) and vibetube (93 stars), and he also has openshorts (GitHub shows 7.5k stars but labels it a fork; original authorship unverified). In short, this is an indie developer who understands content distribution and has a LinkedIn audience of about 10k to start from, not a technologist who went viral by accident.

5. Why it took off

  • Timing: in the second half of 2026, long-running unattended agents like Claude Code, Codex, OpenClaw, and Hermes became part of daily life, and "the agent is stuck waiting for me while I'm away from the computer" became a common pain point. The Reddit original opened with exactly that.
  • Easy to explain in one line, easy to show in one video: "Your agent can call you" plus real screen recordings of a lock-screen incoming call. It's built for LinkedIn, Reddit and Reels, and almost every repost copies "no phone number, no Twilio, no per-minute fees" word for word.
  • Aimed at the pain points of the predecessor: call-me requires a phone number, Twilio verification and per-minute billing (the founder's struggle to get a number in Spain is the starting point). agentring uses FCM push + LiveKit + a native call screen, with zero telecom costs, and voice AI defaults to Gemini Live's free tier.
  • Harness-agnostic: MCP + CLI + REST, covering Claude Code, Codex, opencode, OpenClaw, Hermes, n8n. It landed right as OpenClaw and Hermes users were looking for tools (Julian Goldie's tag is literally #hermesagent).
  • Visibly complete engineering: protocol-first design, HMAC-signed push, image pinning by digest, and so on. Technical breakdowns on X praise exactly this, which builds developer trust.

6. Differentiation, and whether that's why it took off

The differentiation = no phone network (VoIP straight into your own app: no number, no Twilio, no per-minute fees) + native lock-screen calls (they ring even in Doze and can cut through Do Not Disturb) + two-way (you can call the agent, and voice AI can ask your agent mid-call) + usable by any MCP agent + self-hosted and managed tracks.

Is that the reason? It's a headline-level reason, not a scale-level one. "No Twilio" is the hook in every mention, which keeps it in the conversation inside a category call-me already occupies. But its absolute volume (289) is far below call-me's (2.7k), which suggests the "agent calls you" need itself is niche (the Reddit comments are full of "notifications are enough"). The differentiation won it an incremental slice of a small cake rather than opening a big market. What really got it these stars within two weeks was the founder's own distribution: LinkedIn traction, the original Reddit post, a blog, and secondary spread through AI content farms and Reel creators. The cost is Android-only, tested on a single Pixel 6, which keeps iPhone users (many of them developers) out.

VII. Is anyone watching, is anyone copying?

  • Visibility: it's spreading within small circles. One Reddit r/ClaudeCode post, the founder's LinkedIn, a dozen or so aggregator sites and small blogs, two or three Julian Goldie and similar Reels. No HN front page, no big media coverage, no trending placement (the database has been tracking it for under 60 days, so it couldn't have made it anyway).
  • Revenue: the managed Pro plan is $9/month. No revenue figures have been published.
  • Copycats: no new similar products found. Same-name repos that Brave surfaced, such as Arihant37/monxas/collab-16/marcunson, are ordinary forks.

VIII. Takeaways

  1. Find the structural costs of the predecessor's approach (phone numbers, per-minute billing, regional verification) in a small category already validated by call-me (2.7k), and use "no X needed" as the headline.
  2. Open with a real screen-recorded demo and a personal pain point ("my agent got stuck for an hour"), posting simultaneously to LinkedIn (the native-language circle) and vertical Reddit subs.
  3. Open source for acquisition, the managed plan ($9/month) for revenue, with the managed-plan link pinned at the top of the open-source README.
  4. Write "hands-on comparison" blogs (latency comparisons across three real-time voice models, local model comparisons) for long-tail SEO, and also supply material for AI content farms.
  5. Support the hottest harnesses right now (OpenClaw, Hermes) so creators in each community can cover it.

9. What I'm still unsure about

  • The exact daily distribution and source mix of stars in the first week (10-23~10-30, 0→155). The stargazer timestamps weren't pulled because the GitHub API quota ran out.
  • Upvotes and comment count of the original Reddit post (blocked by anti-scraping; only reposts were visible).
  • The trigger source for 11-03 +39.
  • Managed-plan sign-ups and paying users; Google Play install counts (dev.agentring.app isn't in our googleplay database).
  • Whether Julian Goldie and similar Reels are paid partnerships (can't tell; "comment for the tutorial" is their standard format).
