Freefield: a developer with no following who "rebuilt an entire company" worth $5.4B in a bounty contest

What it is An open-source studio that rebuilds Higgsfield's 120 AI image, video, effects and audio apps on ComfyUI, following its menu, using only downloadable open-weight models that run on your own GPU or on Modal.

Why it took off Comfy's official bounty contest gave every entry exposure, and Higgsfield's lawyer letter turned the contest into tech news; it's the only entry that actually completed the whole catalog, with measured runtimes and VRAM figures, and reposting sites and accounts picked it up.

CHow you could follow this Don't build another open-source Higgsfield; watch for the next platform bounty contest or big-company "promised to open-source, didn't" controversy, pick the topic that best represents the whole story, match the competitor product's menu item by item, write a README with measured data, and launch first on the relevant subreddits.

C grade: the stars came almost entirely from a contest that has already closed and a one-off lawyer-letter controversy; 100+ entries on the same topic already exist and the top two spots are settled, so you can't ride this wave now. The playbook is worth learning, but you need to wait for the next event. Spreading in small circles

On Oct 2026 15, Comfy, the company behind ComfyUI, published a blog post titled "Higgsfield promised to open-source its whole platform, then didn't, so we'll help them out." It offered a $10K top prize, three RTX 5090 cards and a pile of sponsor bonuses for an open-source rebuild of Higgsfield's creative apps. 12 days later, neuregex, a developer with a YouTube channel of just 97 subscribers, posted on r/comfyui: "Freefield: Higgsfield rebuilt on ComfyUI, 117 apps, open weights only (MIT)." By Nov 6, the repo had 973 stars and 187 forks, ranking second among 100+ entries. Almost all of those stars came from the contest and a lawyer's letter; the contest closed submissions on Nov 3, and the window for this path closed with it. The takeaway is its playbook.

What it is

Higgsfield is a company that makes AI images, video and effects. It was valued at $5.4B in August, claims 32M users, and charges by credits. Its website is a long list of "apps": cinematic camera moves, face swap, relighting, lip sync and assorted transformation effects.

Freefield rebuilt that catalog using Higgsfield's own menu structure: 120 apps, 119 of which work, and the author says it covers 95 of Higgsfield's 129 tools. Each app is a ComfyUI workflow built on downloadable open-weight models (FLUX 3 Klein, LTX-2.5, MiniMax H3, Qwen Image Edit, Wan 2.2, Stable Audio 3 and others), and none call a paid API. It can be deployed to Modal cloud or run on your own GPU. The video menu screenshot on the README's front page is captioned "46 apps, grouped the way Higgsfield groups them."

Two engineering choices made it possible for one person to build 120 apps in a week:

  • No app was coded by hand. Each app is a folder with an app.json manifest and a workflow. The web form, model downloads, VRAM table and tests are all generated from the manifest.
  • Most of the apps are template apps. 72 of the 120 are a fixed prompt wrapped around a handful of pipelines. The author says so openly in the README, and notes that much of Higgsfield's catalog works the same way.

The commit history shows AI coding assistants were involved: 81 commits, repo created in Oct 20, made public on 27.

Why this one and not the other 100

In the same contest, Jutsu Studio counted 102 entries. 26 of them were, like this one, "all-in-one studios," and most had single-digit stars. Same exposure, very different results:

wexloops/openfieldA similar studio with no license and fewer apps172
OpensfieldClaims 146 tools1

Opensfield has more tools but only 1 stars, so padding the count doesn't work. What Freefield adds is receipts: the README lists 48 GPU runs on Modal from Oct 20 to 26, with 733 test cases and 710 passing. The interface shows the real runtime and peak VRAM for every example, and the table says whether a 24G card can run it. ArtRealmAI, the repost site, put it best: "Receipts, not vibes." AI news sites and tutorial sites writing about a "free Higgsfield" have to pick one that actually works, and this is the one they pick.

The title matters too. "Higgsfield, fully rebuilt, open weights only, MIT" says it all in one line. It targets a paid, widely discussed product that had been called "fake open source." Higgsfield's official open-higgsfield release in September was just a front end that still needed its paid API. The audience's frustration was already there.

(Daily star counts are GitHub daily snapshots. Later on, the GitHub page showed 973 at 11-06.)

The growth came in waves, and each wave lines up with a news item in the contest. The biggest push was the lawyer's letter. It turned a contest inside the ComfyUI community into tech news, and "rebuilt Higgsfield in full" was the most direct proof of that story. The author himself did little promotion. No X post from him turned up, he wasn't on the X hashtag list of contest entries, and there was nothing on Hacker News. Distribution came from the Reddit launch post, many AI-written news sites and short-video repost accounts. The author's own demo video got 9,056 views.

A fork-to-star ratio of about 1:5 is normal for a project you have to self-host. Some people have already copied the whole thing under new names (ArtFF4 and freefield_aff4), and several same-named empty repos appeared after Nov 2.

Where it stands now

After submissions closed, the author's last push was on Nov 3. They then moved on to forking other projects, and daily star growth dropped from +180 to +43. Winners were originally due 11-06 and were later pushed to 11-10 (inferred from the contest page and coverage). Freefield appears to meet the conditions for several prizes: Open Weights Only, the LTX effects, FLUX and H3. If it wins, Comfy will feature it on its Hub, which could bring another small wave. The other variable is whether Higgsfield pursues projects that use its name and interface.

If it were you

C. Don't build a second open-source Higgsfield. Submissions are closed, 102 entries are already up, Freefield and openjutsu already hold the top two spots, and a repeat of the same brief won't get the contest or lawyer-letter traffic. What it really teaches is a playbook you can move elsewhere, but that playbook needs the next opportunity to show up first.

Who it suits: developers who know ComfyUI or an open-model ecosystem and can finish a complete product in a week or two, and people with GPU credits who can produce measured results. You don't need an audience. Freefield's author didn't have one either.

Who it doesn't suit: people trying to chase this contest now; people who think piling on app count will win (Opensfield has 146 tools and 1 stars); people hoping a "clone of X" will earn stars over time without any plan to maintain it after the event. Interest in these projects follows the event and drops once it's over.

How to do it: watch for bounty contests and open-source challenges run by platform companies (model labs, ComfyUI, Hugging Face, hackathons), and for PR incidents where a big company promised to open-source something and didn't. Once you pick one:

  1. Pick the brief that best captures the whole story ("rebuild all of it") rather than a small feature.
  2. Match the competitor's menu item by item, and put screenshots at the top of the README so people understand it at a glance.
  3. Write an evidence-style README: measured runtime, VRAM and pass rate for every feature, so reprint sites can quote it directly.
  4. Drive the build from manifests and batch-generate from templates, and use an AI coding assistant to push coverage.
  5. Meet the judging categories on purpose to qualify for several prizes at once.

How to get users: launch in the relevant community's subreddit with a one-line title that says what it's an open-source version of, how many features it has and what license it uses. Post a 2-minute demo video. Leave the rest to the contest itself and to automatic reposting by AI news sites and repost accounts. When controversy breaks out, make sure your repo is the clearest evidence in that story.

Deadline: for this contest, Nov 3 has already passed. For this playbook, it depends on when the next bounty contest happens.

Where this read could be wrong: (1) A month after the contest, Freefield is still gaining dozens of stars a day. That suggests it isn't just an event artifact, and that demand for an open clone of a paid AI studio is durable, so a maintained version could be worth building. (2) In a similar bounty contest, high-completeness entries with measured results still got single-digit stars. That would mean Freefield's success came from one-time luck with the lawyer's letter, not from the playbook.

Why neuregex/freefield took off

Research date 2026-11-06. Data sources: our github repo (repo_day, starting 2026-10-28), hackernews repo, GitHub API, web (Jina/Exa/Brave search). Reddit pages returned 403 to our crawler, so post scores were not retrieved.

One line

Freefield is an entry in Comfy's official #OpenSourceHiggsfield bounty contest (prize pool around $25k, launched by 10-15): it rebuilds Higgsfield's creative app catalog (image, video, VFX, audio) on ComfyUI, mirroring its interface, with 120 apps (the author says it covers 95 of Higgsfield's 129 tools). It uses only open-weight models, is MIT licensed, and runs on Modal or your own GPU. It took off thanks to platform events and a strong angle: contest traffic, the controversy over Higgsfield's cease-and-desist letter, and the headline "clone a $5.4B paid product entirely for free." The work itself is highly complete (the README includes GPU test records), and among the "full catalog studio" projects in the same niche it has the most stars, by an order of magnitude.

1. What it is

  • Repo created 2026-10-20, made public 10-27 (first commit "Freefield base" 10-20; README adds a demo video link, LICENSE is 10-27; ComfyUI Wiki says "went public on October 27, 2026"). 81 commits, some with Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5, meaning it was rushed out with an AI coding assistant.
  • Structure: one folder per app (app.json manifest + ComfyUI API-format workflow). The web UI, forms, model downloads, VRAM tables, and tests are all generated from the manifest, with no per-app code. Browser → Node service (Comfy SDK) → gateway (calls /free to clear VRAM when switching apps) → ComfyUI.
  • Scale: 120 apps, 119 ready; 39 standalone workflows + 72 "template apps" (the author openly says Higgsfield's catalog is mostly fixed prompts wrapped around a few pipelines, and he does the same).
  • Models: FLUX 3 Image Klein, Z-Image Turbo, LTX-2.5 + official IC-LoRA, MiniMax H3, Qwen Image Edit, Wan 2.1/2.2, SeedVR2, Stable Audio 3, MiniMax Music 3, etc. All open-weight, with no API or partner nodes.
  • "Receipts": the README lists 48 Modal GPU experiments (L40S/H100,733, 710 use cases passed), each example marked with run time and peak VRAM. It also includes an image model comparison and a cost estimate for Soul ID without training. Media coverage singled this out (ArtRealmAI: "Receipts, not vibes").

Jutsu Studio's contest list counts 102 entries, most with single-digit stars (https://jutsustudio.com/open-source-higgsfield/). Freefield is second in the whole field, and first among the "full catalog studio" projects (26 of them); the runner-up, OpenField, has about 1/6 of its stars.

3. Where users came from (growth tactics)

  1. Platform event: Comfy's official bounty contest (confirmed). 10-15 Comfy published a blog post, "Higgsfield promised to open source and didn't, so we're helping them," with a $10,000 top prize + 3 RTX 5090 + sponsor prizes (Runpod, LTX, BFL, MiniMax). The contest itself drives traffic to every entry: hashtag, Comfy's site, ComfyUI Wiki news, and a roundup list. Freefield's README is written around the judging categories: it covers "Open Weights Only" (with a 5090), the LTX VFX bonus, the FLUX bonus, and the H3 bonus. Sources: blog.comfy.org/p/higgsfield-promised-to-open-source, comfy.org/open-source-higgsfield/
  2. Controversy amplifies it (confirmed). 10-28 Higgsfield's legal team sent Comfy a cease-and-desist (mainly over the trademarked name). Comfy co-founder Yoland Yan published the letter on X, and Comfy responded that the contest would go ahead as planned. This pushed the contest out of the ComfyUI circle into tech news (TechCityAuthority 10-30, dev.to 10-31, Tokenstrom 11-04, beehiiv 11-03 "How ComfyUI and Open Source Just Cloned a $5.4B AI Startup in Two Weeks"). The Freefield headline "Higgsfield entirely rebuilt" is the most direct evidence for this story, and it appears as a related post on the r/StableDiffusion legal-letter thread and the r/comfyui contest roundup thread.
  3. First posted on Reddit r/comfyui (existence confirmed, score not retrieved). The post "Freefield: Higgsfield rebuilt on ComfyUI, 117 apps, open weights only (MIT)" appears on the r/comfyui best list. Aggregators including AGI Hunt, AIBriefs, and AIPick (in Chinese) all cite this Reddit post as the source (10-27/28). www.reddit.com/r/comfyui/comments/1xh73t4/
  4. Auto-reposted by AI news and tutorial sites (confirmed). ComfyUI Wiki (10-27), ArtRealmAI (10-28), FreakyJolly install tutorial (10-30), KnowLab, ReviewRamble (11-03,3.8/5). Many of these sites are AI-generated content farms that capture the search intent "free alternative to Higgsfield."
  5. Short videos from Instagram / Facebook / Threads repost accounts (existence confirmed, view counts unverified). Instagram reel DfEKGBliZ94, DfVuSDIDJaR; Facebook PHfreecoder; Threads @josh_gutt "Freefield is a free, open-source Higgsfield." Timing lines up with the +170 on 11-01.
  6. The author's own X account: not found. Notably, Jutsu Studio's list was built from the X tag #OpenSourceHiggsfield and GitHub search, yet it doesn't include neuregex/freefield, suggesting the author probably didn't post on X. Its spread mainly came through Reddit, repost sites, and short-video repost accounts. The local x-radar corpus returns nothing for freefield/Higgsfield (the corpus coverage is limited, so it's not evidence either way).
  7. HN: our hackernews repo has no Freefield-related story. There is only one Show HN for a Higgsfield alternative, 10-22 (2 points). HN is not a source.
  8. Paid acquisition: no evidence, and an open-source project has no incentive for it.

5. Why it took off

  • Timing / platform event: an official bounty plus a trademark cease-and-desist fight turned "open-source Higgsfield" into a hot topic within two weeks. All entries got some of the traffic, but Freefield is the only one that truly rebuilt all of Higgsfield, so it became the face of the story.
  • The title is the pitch: "Higgsfield rebuilt, 117 apps, open weights only, MIT" spreads in one line. It targets a paid, criticized star product, and the user emotion is already there (no pay-per-credit, no fake open source).
  • Completeness and "proof": 120 apps, menu screenshots mapped one-to-one to Higgsfield, every example with real GPU timings and VRAM, CI checking every workflow. Most of the other studies in the same niche 20 are half-finished, which makes reposting sites and review blogs willing to write about it (ArtRealmAI's words: "What makes Freefield feel trustworthy is its lab log").
  • The engineering lever: checklist-driven, with batch generation from a template table, so one person can lay out 120 apps in a week (AI coding assistants are visible in the commits). Matching Higgsfield's catalog count is what makes the "full clone" story hold.
  • Author background: previously built the ComfyUI security scanner nodesafe and the ComfyUI-BerniniR nodes, so they know the ComfyUI ecosystem. But they have no following (97 YouTube subscribers, 31 GitHub followers), so this wasn't driven by personal influence.

6. Differentiation

Against other open-source alternatives: full catalog × open weights only × runs locally or on Modal × every app has real benchmarks. Freefield is the only one with all four. Open-Generative-AI has more stars but is a cloud-API front end; openjutsu has more stars but covers just one app; OpenField has the same idea but no license, no coverage, and no benchmarks. This difference is why it won within the contest (under the same wave of traffic it got 5–100 times the stars of comparable studios). But getting the traffic in the first place came from the contest and the controversy. Without that event, an unknown author's ComfyUI front end would rarely reach this scale.

7. Visibility and copycats

  • Visibility: it's being passed around in the ComfyUI and AI video creator circles, and it made several tech news sites thanks to the cease-and-desist fight. No big accounts endorsed it and no mainstream outlet wrote about it specifically; the author didn't promote it on X.
  • Copycats: the contest already had 20 similar studios (most launched before it or at the same time); direct copies and renames include ArtFF4 and freefield_aff4; after 11-02 several empty GitHub repos with the same name appeared (cesaroquendo108-byte/freefield, shanoj7292/freefield, sidharthbhaskarptk-maker/freefield, etc.), plus anthonyfuar/freefield (10-28, reworded to a pay-per-use pitch).
  • To watch: 11-10 announces winners (the page originally said 11-06, later pushed to 11-10). If it takes Open Weights Only or the top prize, there will be another wave of exposure through Comfy's official channels.

8. What to borrow

  • "Riding a bounty/controversy": a platform-run contest plus an opponent's PR blunder is the cheapest traffic entry point for an unknown developer. Pick the title that best captures the story (a full clone, not a small feature).
  • "Benchmark against a paid star product and map its catalog one-to-one": menu screenshots lined up side by side let readers see the value at a glance.
  • "Proof-style README": timings, VRAM, pass rates, and comparison charts that reposting sites can cite directly, and AI news sites will spread it for you automatically.
  • Checklist-driven plus template-table batch generation, using an AI coding assistant to match most of the rival's coverage.

9. Uncertain

  • Reddit post score and comment count (403 couldn't be retrieved); view counts on the various Instagram/Threads repost videos.
  • Whether the author promoted it on X/Discord (not found).
  • Star authenticity wasn't verified account by account (the stargazers endpoint returned 404 for this repo, so the timing distribution can't be checked). But each growth wave lines up with public events, and there are no obvious signs of star farming.
  • The contest result (11-10) and whether it keeps being maintained after the contest: after 11-03 the author moved on to other repos (hermes-agent, molmo forks), and freefield's last push was 11-03.
  • Whether Higgsfield will take further legal action against projects using its name or interface.
