"Use the subscription you already pay for": how OpenBot, a local alternative to Grok Bot, got 5,700 stars, and whether you can still squeeze in

What it is A desktop and mobile app that turns the Codex, Claude Code, Gemini, Grok, and other AI tools you're already logged into on your computer into an always-on team of AI teammates that can hand off work to each other. In effect, a free local version of Grok Bot.

Why it took off Grok Bot launched and claimed the "free, local, works with the subscription you already have" alternative spot the next day. In late October, it hit the GitHub trending list for 6 days and picked up about 60% of its stars. When Grok Bot cut its quotas in November, it also got a push from a Musk quote.

CHow you could follow it Don't build another Grok Bot alternative. Copy the playbook: when a big company ships an agent feature, create the repo the same day, hook into "reuse the subscription you already have," fill the gaps it left (permission sandboxing and commercial licensing), and add a comparison page plus daily posts from the founder.

Grade C: The playbook works, but the "Grok Bot alternative" slot was split among five or six projects by mid-August. OpenMausBot and the same-named CopilotKit/OpenBot both have more stars. OpenBot got in because a company team posted daily and covered every platform, which an individual developer would struggle to copy. Being talked about in niche circles

OpenBot is a desktop app that turns the AI coding tools already logged in on your computer (Codex, Claude Code, Gemini, Grok, and more) into one always-on AI team. It was built the day after xAI launched Grok Bot, pitched as a "free, local alternative to Grok Bot," and hit 86 stars in 5,773 days. The playbook is worth studying. The "Grok Bot alternative" spot is already crowded with a dozen-plus projects, and at least two or three have more stars, so cloning it now is a hard way to stand out.

a one-liner about costs being unsustainable

In Nov 2026 2, Grok Bot users on X collectively complained that their quotas had suddenly run dry. A Norwegian Dogecoin account's complaint post got 1.83M views, and Musk replied underneath: "The cost of serving Grok Bot was unsustainably high relative to revenue."

The same day, @OpenBot_ quote-tweeted Musk's reply with a video and the caption:

"Your business shouldn't depend on one model's limits. Switch to OpenBot. Use it with any model you have. Never run out of tokens."

In plain terms: don't bet your business on one model's quota. Switch to OpenBot, use whatever models you have, and never run out of tokens. The post got 553 likes and 56k impressions, and commenters said things like "switched over today, swapping between models is seamless, impressive." Just after midnight Beijing time on Nov 4, Chinese blogger Xuetawuyun (@Pluvio9yte) posted: "This is insane speed! Someone already built an open-source alternative to Grok Bot," with 44k impressions. On Nov 4, the repo gained 519 stars in a single day, its biggest one-day jump since the trending stretch.

This is already its second ride on Grok Bot's momentum. The first was the repo itself: Grok Bot launched in Aug 11, and nightly-labs/openbot was created on Aug 12.

What it is

The README's first line: "a local-first desktop workspace for persistent AI teammates." In practice:

  • Each agent has its own name, working directory, and message queue. Underneath, it runs the CLIs already logged in on your machine, supporting a dozen-plus tools including Codex, Claude Code, Grok, Gemini, Cursor, Cline, Kimi, Devin, GitHub Copilot, and Hermes, and it can connect local models too.
  • Agents can message each other, hand off tasks, and collaborate in channels. It also ships a built-in browser, optional computer control, and integrations with Slack, Discord, and Telegram.
  • Desktop builds exist for macOS, Windows, and Linux. iPhone, Android, and the web can connect remotely to your home machine, and it can also run on a VPS via Docker.

The comparison page on its site makes the pitch plain: "OpenBot sells you no model." It uses the subscriptions you already pay for with ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini. When one provider runs out of quota, the agent automatically switches to a backup model from another, and chat history and working directories stay intact. With Grok Bot, the model is chosen by Cursor, and when the weekly quota runs out, it stops.

The README also spells out the trade-off: agents run in danger-full-access by default. Once you grant permission the first time, reading and writing files, running commands, and accessing the web no longer ask for confirmation each time.

The biggest chunk came from GitHub trending: from 10-26 to 10-31, over these 6 days it gained 3,357 stars, close to 60% of the total. Grok Bot added a second wave of attention. In the last 7 days it gained 2,009 stars, a third less than the 7 days before that, which had 3,010. It's cooling off.

Around the trending spike, it also did a few things to keep the attention from fading fast:

  • Comparison page matrix: openbot.run/compare has about fifteen "OpenBot vs X" pages, with X including Grok Bot, Claude Cowork, ChatGPT dots, Manus, Devin, OpenClaw, and Hermes Agent, aimed squarely at people searching for "X alternative." How much traffic these pages bring is unclear from the outside.
  • Daily posts from the founder: Founder Norbert Bodziony has been posting "Day N/" updates on X since 10-29, shipping a new feature each day, such as folder permissions, webhook-triggered workflows, multiplayer canvas, WhatsApp integration, and a 30% cut in token usage. The official account's WhatsApp demo post got 764 likes and 62k impressions.
  • 几乎每天发版:86 天发到 v0.61.0,446 个 open issue、127 个 open PR。

Some things didn't work: it's nowhere to be found on Hacker News, mainstream tech media hasn't covered it, and no big AI founders or investors have amplified it. Its attention has mostly circulated within developer circles and Chinese-language AI bloggers.

Why it could take off

  1. Moved fast to claim the spot. Big tech had just made "always-on AI teammates" a hot category, and it put up an "open-source local version" banner the next day, naming itself directly against the target: Grok Bot vs OpenBot.
  2. A one-liner that hits heavy users. People already paying for Claude Max or ChatGPT Pro are the least eager to pay again for Grok Bot or Cursor. "Use the subscription you already pay for" needs no explanation. Once a big player cut quotas, "Never run out of tokens" became a ready-made selling point.
  3. It's not a one-person project. It comes from Poland's Synthetify Labs, which has spent 4 years on the Nightly crypto wallet. Three desktop and two mobile platforms with near-daily releases is hard for a solo indie dev to pull off.
  4. Amplified by trending. The repo had existed for 75 days before it first charted, and once it did, it stayed on the overall daily chart for 5 days in a row.

Who is competing for the same spot

It isn't the only "Grok Bot alternative," and it isn't the biggest (the star counts are all 11-06):

ProjectStarsvs OpenBot
milind-soni/OpenMausBot13,131,7 days +5,817Created the same day as Grok Bot, billed as an open-source alternative, gives the bot a Docker VM
CopilotKit/OpenBot10,240Released 9 days later with an identical name; each agent gets its own machine, with a focus on team governance
Orkas-AI/Orkas9,035A local AI team where a central coordinator splits up tasks
elie222/rakazo7,167Open-source alternative with choice of model and sandbox
AnyModelBot, rome, rerun, switch, and othersA few hundred to four thousand starsSame pitch: "the local open-source version of Grok Bot / dots"
Hermes Agent, OpenClaw, Paperclip110k to 390kEstablished single-agent frameworks; OpenBot treats them as providers it can plug into

Compared with big-tech products, the differences are clear: local, free, multiple model providers, and your own subscriptions, which is exactly what got it going. Compared with other open-source alternatives, the differences shrink to details: it uses the CLIs already logged in on your machine instead of making you configure API keys, it has channel-based collaboration, and it has a mobile client. Several rivals have more stars, so these details aren't why it took off. It rode the whole category's tailwind. Even the name was shared with another project, CopilotKit, and media outlets published pieces clarifying that the two aren't the same.

It has its controversies too. On 10-27, Teknium, from Nous Research behind Hermes Agent, retweeted a user complaint: OpenBot's agent ignored the user's refusal and executed an irreversible setting change. The caption read "Welcome back to the Hermes Agent crew," with 237 likes. Full permissions are both a selling point and a liability.

How it makes money (for what it's worth)

The license is PolyForm Noncommercial, not a standard open-source license: free for personal and non-commercial use, but you buy a license for commercial use. The site lists hosted server plans from €20 / $25 a month, and team plans from $29 per seat a month. Founder 10-07 posted "first revenue" on X but didn't disclose an amount. If your goal is open source stars, you can skip this part for now.

If it were you

Bottom line: The playbook is worth copying, but don't chase the spot. "Big tech launches a new category, you ship an open-source local version the next day, name it directly against the target, and hook people with 'use the subscription you already have'" is a clear, repeatable path to stars. But the specific "Grok Bot alternative" spot already has a dozen-plus projects, with the top three past 7,000 stars, so entering now means ranking behind them.

Who it suits: Small teams that can ship consistently for several months, or developers who already have an agent framework and can quickly wrap a "alternative" layer around it.

Who it doesn't suit: Someone building a project alone on weekends. This kind of project means integrating a dozen-plus CLIs across three desktop platforms and answering issues every day, and the workload adds up quickly. It's also a bad fit for anyone who only wants to make yet another "Grok Bot alternative."

How to do it:

  1. Watch for big tech's next category launch (the next "AI teammate," "AI browser," or "AI computer") and create the repo within 24 hours, naming it and writing the first README line directly against that product.
  2. Pick the hook "save money / no lock-in": reuse the subscriptions users already have, support local models, and keep data on the machine. Cloud products from big players can't do all three by design.
  3. To niche down, go where OpenBot hasn't reached: a different ecosystem (for example, only Chinese models and domestic CLIs like Kimi, Qwen, DeepSeek), a different audience (non-programmers who won't touch a command line), or fix its weak spots (sandboxing by default, with confirmation for high-risk actions).

How to get users: On launch day, publish a "your project vs the big-tech product" comparison page. When the big player stumbles (cuts quotas, raises prices, goes down), post the same day quoting the people involved. Build momentum with a "Day N" daily update from the founder. Actively reach out to GitHub recommendation bloggers and repost accounts in Chinese and Japanese. GitHub trending is the biggest channel, but you can't request your way onto it. You have to build the attention yourself first.

How early is this: The "always-on AI teammate" wave was already underway in August, so this is arriving late (my inference). To catch the next wave, the window is the day or two right after the big-tech launch.

Signs you've misread it: If you create the repo within a week of the big-tech launch and it's still in the hundreds after two weeks, either someone else already owns the "open-source alternative" slot in this category, or the big player's new product never caught on. Conversely, if Grok Bot restores quotas or cuts prices, and OpenBot's daily gains fall to a few dozen by mid-November, then the second wave of borrowed attention was a one-off, and it isn't worth chasing its pace.

Why nightly-labs/openbot (OpenBot) took off

In one line: OpenBot is a local open-source alternative to xAI's "Grok Bot" (2026-08-11 launch), a cloud-hosted always-on AI teammate. The repo was created on 08-12, the day after Grok Bot launched. Its pitch is "use the ChatGPT / Claude / Gemini / Grok subscriptions you already pay for" to run a multi-vendor agent team on your own machine. Stars mostly came from 10-26 onward, when it kept hitting GitHub trending (best all-site rank #3). After Grok Bot cut usage and Musk admitted "costs can't hold up", official accounts and Chinese KOLs pushed it again and it grew another round. 11-02

1. Basic data (source: our github database, as of 2026-11-06)

  • Created 2026-08-12, day 86, 5,773 stars / 589 forks (fork ratio 10.2%, about the same as the median 11% for new repos of similar age and size), 446 open issues / 127 open PRs, v0.61.0 (11-04). The README says "almost daily releases". The suspect list is empty.
  • The curve has three phases:
    • Before the surge: 10-09 469 → 10-25 839, about 23 per day.
    • Trending burst: 10-26 1,042 → 10-27 1,798 → 10-28 2,747 (+949 in a single day, the highest in the observation window) → 10-31 4,196.
    • Second wave: 11-04 +519 in a single day (5,219), 11-06 5,773. gain_7d 2,009, versus 7 over the prior 3,010 days. It is cooling off.
  • Trending records (github database trending table):
    • 10-26: TypeScript daily chart #12, first appearance. The repo was 75 days old then, past the roughly 60-day threshold.
    • 10-27: all-site daily chart #9, TS #3.
    • 10-28: all-site daily chart #3, TS #1, with 777 stars in that period.
    • 10-29: all-site #9. 10-30: all-site #6.
    • Afterward it stayed on the TS weekly chart (11-03, #7).
  • Mobile: iOS "OpenBot.run", developer Synthetify Labs sp. z o.o., listed 2026-10-26, 0 ratings, only appearing on small charts such as #87 on the Poland Top Free chart (appstore database). The Android app run.openbot.mobile is on Google Play, but we did not collect it.
  • Pricing: free for personal and non-commercial use under the PolyForm Noncommercial 1.0.0 license. Commercial use requires a paid license. OpenBot for Business starts at $29 per person per month (from search snippets). The changelog says "new commercial licenses free until 2026-12-01", after which Stripe charges. The founder 10-07 posted "first revenue" on X but did not share a specific amount.

2. Competitors: this is a packed category

In the fall of 2026, "always-on AI teammate / AI coworker" became a new category for big companies, and the open-source scene followed with a batch of "Grok Bot alternatives":

Bottom line: OpenBot sits mid-pack among these "Grok Bot alternatives". OpenMausBot and CopilotKit/OpenBot both have more stars. It is not the only one, and not the biggest.

3. Growth tactics (evidence)

  1. GitHub trending (verified, main source): from 10-26 to 10-31 it gained 3,357 stars, matching the days it hit the all-site and TS daily charts (see above). The trending spike also pulled in a wave of reposts:
    • explainx.ai 10-26 wrote one (around 1.2k stars then, headlined "312 stars in a day").
    • hermes-ai.net news.
    • The "GitHub Daily Trend" show on Apple Podcasts.
    • r/BestGitHubRepos (at 1.3k stars).
    • Instagram reels, YouTube explainers, and Japanese repost accounts like githubaitrend.
  2. Riding Grok Bot's event marketing (verified):
    • The repo was created the day after Grok Bot launched. The official site 09-24 went live with an "OpenBot vs Grok Bot" comparison page.
    • The Product Hunt tagline reads straight up: "Grok Bot alternative: free, local, open-source, multiplayer".
    • 11-02 Grok Bot users are collectively complaining that their usage is maxed out. @DogecoinNorway's post hit 1.83M impressions, and Musk replied that the cost was "not sustainable relative to revenue." The same day @OpenBot_ quoted Musk's reply with "Never run out of tokens", getting ❤553 and 56k impressions.
    • 11-04 Chinese KOL @Pluvio9yte posted "Someone already built an open-source alternative to Grok Bot this fast?", getting ❤342 and 44k impressions. Stars grew +519 that day, the second peak.
    • 11-05 @guishou_56 posted "GrokBot cut usage and dumbed it down... no need to renew Musk's subscription next month."
  3. SEO comparison matrix (confirmed): openbot.run/compare has about 15 "OpenBot vs X" pages, where X includes Grok Bot, Claude Cowork, ChatGPT dots, Manus, Devin, OpenClaw, Hermes Agent, Paperclip, Meta Muse, Viktor, and Instinct. It also has intercept pages like "Codex vs Claude Code" and install guides under /providers/* and /guides/*. Searching "OpenBot" also surfaces third-party sites mindstudio, aiagentslist, airehber (Turkish), and antihype (Portuguese). How much traffic these pages bring is unverified.
  4. Product Hunt (confirmed, small): 2026-10-06 launch, 728 followers, 2 badges. Not a Top Product (producthunt library).
  5. Founder build-in-public + official account (confirmed):
    • Founder Norbert Bodziony (Poland, co-founder of the Nightly wallet and Synthetify; his LinkedIn says he has been building OpenBot since 2026-08) has posted "Day N/" updates since 10-29, shipping new features almost daily: folder permissions, webhooks for workflows, multiplayer canvas, WhatsApp integration, and a 30% cut in token usage.
    • @OpenBot_ posts scenario videos, such as AI job hunting, a news workflow that runs at 9 o'clock, and WhatsApp integration (11-05 ❤764, 62k impressions).
    • The founder also posted "I built OpenBot" on r/LocalLLaMA. The Reddit page was blocked by 403, so the vote count is unverified.
  6. Organic mentions by big accounts (confirmed): analyst Patrick Moorhead 11-01 shared his son's home edge-AI setup, "all through Tailscale, accessed with OpenBot", with ❤593 and 50k impressions. There was also backlash: Teknium of Nous, the team behind Hermes Agent, reposted a user complaint (OpenBot's agent ignored the user's refusal and made an irreversible settings change) with the caption "Welcome back to Hermes Agent crew", getting ❤237. 10-27
  7. Not found: No HN story for openbot.run or this repo (hackernews library). Our X circle library has no retweets from AI founders or VC-tier accounts. No evidence of paid acquisition found (github doesn't cover it).

4. Why it took off

  • Timing: Big tech had just made "always-on AI teammates" a hot category (Grok Bot 08-11, then Muse, dots, Cowork), and OpenBot took the "open-source local alternative" slot the next day. Grok Bot's November usage cuts then supplied a ready-made wave of frustrated users.
  • The money pitch hits people: "Use the subscription you already pay for." Heavy users already have Claude Max and ChatGPT Pro and don't want to pay for Grok Bot or Cursor as well. OpenBot reuses those subscriptions through the Codex App Server and the Claude Code CLI, and when quota runs out it automatically falls back to backup models from other providers (official FAQ). That lines up neatly with the "Never run out of tokens" marketing.
  • Product completeness and iteration speed: shipped to v0.61 in 86 days. Covers macOS, Windows, and Linux desktop; iOS, Android, and Web; plus a VPS / Docker headless server. Integrates 11 CLIs and ACP. 127 open PRs and 446 issues show people are actually using it and requesting features.
  • The team has depth: Synthetify Labs is a Polish team that has run the Nightly wallet for 4 years, not a solo indie dev, which is why they can ship daily and cover every platform including mobile.
  • Trending amplifier: the first time the repo hit trending was on day 75 after creation, and it then stayed on the daily site-wide trending list for 5 days straight. About six in ten of all its stars came in those 6 days.

5. Differentiation, and whether that's why it took off

  • Compared with Grok Bot, dots, and Cowork: local, free, multi-provider, and it uses your own subscription. This is its main differentiator and the core of its public story. The comparison pages, the PH tagline, and the official account's piggyback posts all push this. This is the reason.
  • Compared with other open-source alternatives (OpenMausBot, CopilotKit/OpenBot, rakazo), the differences are fairly fine-grained:
    • Most rivals give the bot a virtual machine or Docker and have you plug in your own API key. OpenBot plugs directly into the CLI subscriptions the user is already logged into on their machine, runs the agent locally, and grants full permissions (danger-full-access).
    • It bets on a team-style setup of "agents messaging each other, handing off work, and collaborating in channels", plus queues, a built-in browser, and mobile remote access.
    • But two or three similar projects have more stars than it does, so these niche differences are not why it is outrunning its peers. It rode the category's tailwind; it did not win on unique differentiation.
  • The name "OpenBot" directly targets Grok Bot and is easy to search and remember. But CopilotKit used the same name 9 days later and has more stars, which dilutes the brand.

6. Visibility and copycats

  • Visibility: circulating in small circles. It has been on trending, and there are tech blog posts and Chinese KOL posts (tens of thousands of impressions), but no HN front page, no mainstream tech press coverage, and no endorsement from AI founders or VC-tier accounts. No public MRR or TrustMRR figure; only the founder's one-liner "first revenue".
  • Copycats: It's less that anyone copied it and more that it is itself one of the wave of "Grok Bot alternatives". Projects pushing the same narrative in the same period include OpenMausBot, CopilotKit/OpenBot, rakazo, AnyModelBot (10 days, 2.7k stars), rome, rerun, and switch. The space is already crowded.

7. Takeaways

  • Within 24 hours of big tech launching a new category, it claimed the "open-source / local / free alternative" slot, with a name that directly targets the incumbent (X Bot → OpenBot).
  • "Reuse the subscription you already have" is a very strong hook. Whenever a big player cuts quotas, quote the affected users' own words in marketing.
  • Use about 15 "vs competitor" SEO pages, plus provider and tutorial pages, to intercept search traffic.
  • The founder ships features daily under the "Day N" banner to keep the topic hot.
  • Free personal edition plus a non-commercial license to gather stars and users, then monetize with a hosted team plan at $29 per person per month and commercial licenses.

8. Uncertain

  • The vote count on the r/LocalLLaMA post, and how many users Reddit actually brought in (blocked by 403).
  • Actual traffic to the SEO pages.
  • Real revenue from commercial licenses and Teams (we only have the "first revenue" line).
  • Actual iOS / Android download numbers (the iOS rating count is 0).
  • Whether there was a specific viral post before 10-26 first hit trending. Our library only shows trending and explainx appearing on the same day.
  • Whether the second wave of piggybacking can keep going if Grok Bot restores quotas or cuts prices.
