NVIDIA had been missing from macOS for eight years, and an account registered only a few dozen days earlier filled the gap: 30 days 4176 stars
What it is An open-source GPU driver that gives NVIDIA GTX 16, RTX 20 through 50-series cards hardware acceleration on macOS 15/26 running on Hackintosh and Intel Macs, plus an installer that runs on Windows with a few clicks and can roll back in one click.
Why it blew up NVIDIA cards had no working macOS support for eight years, and this was the first one that actually worked. Headlines like "RTX 5060 runs macOS Metal 3" drew coverage from dozens of tech outlets between Oct 7 and 9, and the one-click installer pulled in ordinary users too.
CHow you could follow it Don't write another driver for the same thing: the best copy of a card-by-card port got about 191 stars. Either take on the parts this project hasn't done well (a compatibility database, diagnostic tools, Chinese-language docs). Better still, copy the method: find a gap that big vendors have abandoned for years, ship a demo version first, add one-click install and one-click rollback, post the first thread on Reddit and forums yourself, then pitch vertical media.

For 2018 years, newer NVIDIA cards had no working accelerated macOS driver, and the Hackintosh community's standard answer was "switch to AMD." In October 2026, an account called nullmoth released an open-source driver that got RTX 20 through 50-series running Metal on macOS 15 and 26 and collected 3,30 stars in 4176 days. The companion installer got another 1367. If you want to earn stars for your own open-source project, here's why this one took off, how many people followed it, and which parts you can actually learn from.
The Oct 7 post
On Oct 2026 7, GitHub account nullmoth (registered Sep 25) created the repo nvidia-macos-driver, and within the same minute created the companion installer 1401. The author posted to r/hackintosh with a one-line title: "Mac OS Nvidia Driver Out Now." A few hours later AppleInsider ran a short piece saying the desktop, Metal 3, apps and games were running on NVIDIA cards, though at the time only one RTX 5060 card was supported and Apple Silicon wasn't supported at all. The only reader comment under the article: "Nice. Would be even nicer if the cards were cheaper, I'd love to add one to my two 2012-year-old Mac Pros."
On Oct 9, Notebookcheck published in several languages at once, with VideoCardz, eTeknix and Habr following. Chinese outlets like Gamersky and Zhihu also wrote that "RTX 50-series Hackintosh now has a chance." On Oct 10 the repo gained 754 stars in a single day.
By Nov 6 (GitHub): 4176 stars, 402 forks, 243 open issues, and the author's account had 532 followers. The homepage of nullmothsystems.com showed four numbers: 235 supported GPU IDs, 2,464 machines had submitted hardware scans, 407 had been shared by owners as "it boots," and a line reading "$0 free forever." In one month the driver went from 1.0 to 2.7.2, with supported cards growing from one to the full GTX 16 and RTX 20/30/40/50 lines.
Why this one got the stars
Eight years empty, and this was the first that worked. NVIDIA's official Web Driver stopped at macOS 2018 in 10.13, and cards from Turing onward (GTX 16, RTX 20 and up) never had a macOS driver. OpenCore Legacy Patcher can backport Kepler drivers to newer systems, but it doesn't reach RTX. Many people wanted to fill this gap, and no one had. The stars were for "finally, someone did it."
The approach is new, and fully public. It didn't reverse-engineer NVIDIA's closed driver. It stitched together existing open-source parts: Metal shaders are first translated from Apple's AIR to SPIR-V (based on metal2vulkan), handed to Mesa's open-source Vulkan driver NVK, and at the bottom runs NVIDIA's kernel module that NVIDIA open-sourced in 2022 (r610) and its official GSP firmware, inside the macOS kernel. Every layer can be checked, so people in the know could vouch for it, and media felt safe writing about it.
The headline carries the news. "RTX 5060 runs Metal 3 and ray tracing on macOS": model plus capability, and you know it's news without explanation. The project's press page lists 199 articles, including LTT's WAN Show and TechLinked.
Where the stars came from
| Channel | What happened | Weight |
|---|---|---|
| Reddit, Hackintosh forums | The author posted the first thread; InsanelyMac, tonymacx86 and Olarila had threads the same day | The spark |
| Tech media | 10-07 AppleInsider and The Mac Observer broke it, 10-09 Notebookcheck published in multiple languages, VideoCardz and others followed; the single-day peak 10-10 came right after | The biggest driver |
| YouTube / Bilibili tutorials | Install and troubleshooting tutorials and playlists, especially plentiful in the Chinese-language community | long tail |
| Built-in spread from the project | "It boots" wall of photos (407 machines), Probe hardware scan, Discord, a website in 10 languages | Retention |
| Hacker News | Several submissions scored only 3–5 points | almost none |
No paid promotion seen. Interest is fading: 10-17 was 3224 stars, after which it gained 30 to 60 per day, 7 days +271 recently, and 7 days +283 before that (GitHub, 11-06).
Does it work well? It boots, but it's a ways from daily-driver quality
New issues opened from Nov 1 to 6 give a rough picture of the current state. Many report it working, such as "i7-9700K + RTX 3060" and "9800X3D + RTX 5080," both tagged [Works]. The problems cluster in rendering details: the Apple Music full-screen player's background has red and blue swapped, Memoji breaks into triangles, and Photoshop crashes on Cmd+J. There are scarier cases too: two users on different AM5 platforms, after shutting down from macOS, got stuck at the POST screen on next boot and had to flash the BIOS to recover. There are many Chinese-language issues too ("the progress bar sits at 1/3 for a long time"). The README itself says most testing was done on a single RTX 5060.
243 open issues isn't all bad. For a hardware project that just launched, these issues show that a lot of people installed it and were willing to stay and report problems.
How many people followed it
This section is the most useful for anyone who wants to follow. As of Nov 6, a GitHub search shows followers falling into three groups:
| Project | Approach | Repo created | star |
|---|---|---|---|
| nullmoth/1401 | Installers built by the original author | 10-07 | 1367 |
| Almosst-DEV/Cobalt64 | Same approach for AMD RDNA4, 5 days earlier | 10-02 | 191 |
| HighDelay/nvidia-macos-driver-nvk | Driver forks adding Wine/DXVK/DLSS | 10-10 | 41 |
| watchthelight-labs/WTLIntelGfx | Same architecture for Intel Xe/Arc | 10-21 | 34 |
| ntn1007/KeplerMetal | Work on older N-cards | 10-15 | 2 |
| joseteo/nvidia-macos-opencore | Command-line tools to fix OpenCore configs | 10-10 | 1 |
| yusufklncc/intel-gpu-macos-driver | Work on Intel integrated graphics | 11-05 | 1 |
| longurara/ArcMTL | Work on Intel Arc | 11-01 | 0 |
The pattern is clear: the stars went to the first person to ship it, and to their own tooling. Porting it to another vendor's card got at most three-digit stars, and the AMD port Cobalt64 actually shipped five days before this one. Forks adding features got dozens; side tools got single digits. Media only wrote about the "first time," and the second and third didn't count as news.
Following also has a high bar. This is kernel-plus-graphics-stack work, and one or two people may not be able to get through it in a few months.
How long is the window?
Apple said at WWDC in 2025 that macOS 26 Tahoe would be the last major release to support Intel Macs, and Hackintoshes depend on Intel macOS. So the platform this driver serves will only shrink: after Tahoe there will be no new system to install. It also requires partially disabling SIP, AMFI and Secure Boot. If Apple closes these switches in a system update, or someone sends a legal letter, the project could stop. The good news for this niche has probably already been used up by this one project.
If it were you
C: you can learn from it, but following it isn't worth much. The original project's stars came from being "first," and followers reached three digits at most; the platform is shrinking and the buzz is fading. What's really worth taking is the method it used to earn stars.
Who it suits: people who already have experience in the macOS kernel, graphics stack or Hackintosh tooling and can fill the "make the driver actually usable" layer, or people looking for their next open-source project who want to copy this playbook in a new area.
Who it doesn't suit: anyone who wants to write another macOS GPU driver to ride this wave (the Intel and older N-card followers already show you won't get many stars), or anyone who plans to fork it, add two features and split the attention.
How to do it:
- If you stay in this area, work on the parts it hasn't done well, not another driver from scratch. The issues already list ready-made tasks: a compatibility database sorted by GPU model and motherboard (for example the AM5 won't-boot-after-shutdown problem), tools that automatically collect logs and diagnose black screens, and complete Chinese-language install and troubleshooting docs. You can contribute these upstream. They usually won't earn stars like the driver did, but they can get your name known in this community (inference).
- Copying the method to another area is worth more. Find a gap that big vendors ignore, a platform has dropped, and users have waited years for: a class of hardware that doesn't work on some system, or an official tool that was discontinued with no replacement. Ship a demo that works first, even for only one model. Alongside the core, build a one-click install and one-click rollback tool, since that decides whether the audience grows from veterans to ordinary people. Use a wall of photos and a hardware scan to turn user feedback into visible progress, which also becomes distribution.
How to get users: make titles "specific model + specific capability." Post the first thread yourself in subreddits and forums where your target users are, and reply under your own post. Then pitch vertical outlets like AppleInsider and Notebookcheck and wait for multilingual reprints. Hacker News barely responds to projects like this, so don't count on it.
When to move: if you want to build accessories in this niche, aim to do it before the end of 2026, while the issue tracker is still busy and new users are still arriving. Copying the method to another area has no deadline, but there is only one "first," so once you find a gap, ship a demo quickly.
What would mean you read it wrong: ① Over the next month or two, a new follower (say an Intel Arc version) actually works and reaches a thousand-plus stars, which would show that "port to another card" still has room. ② Apple announces Intel system releases beyond Tahoe, or someone brings this to Apple Silicon external GPUs, so the platform stops shrinking and the niche heats up again. ③ The reverse: one or two minor macOS updates shut it down, or a legal letter appears, and even the window for accessory work closes.

Why nullmoth/nvidia-macos-driver could actually work
In short: after NVIDIA's Web Driver stalled at High Sierra 2018 years ago, this is the first driver that lets Turing and newer NVIDIA cards (GTX 16, RTX 20–50) run Metal 3 hardware acceleration on macOS 15/26. The Hackintosh community waited eight years for it, and once it shipped, tech media covered it in a wave. Stars came from that wave; the one-click installer 1401, fast updates, Discord and the "It boots" wall kept people around.
1. Basic numbers (GitHub repo / data card, 2026-11-06)
- Created 2026-10-07, 30 days ago: 4150 stars, 402 forks, 243 open issues; latest release v2.6.6, and the official site now says 2.7.2.
- Single-day peak of +754 stars (2026-10-10). It reached 10-17 on 3224, then averaged +30~60 a day: +271 over the last 7 days, and +283 over the 7 days before that. Interest is slowly leveling off, not accelerating.
- The same author's companion repo nullmoth/1401 (building macOS installers on Windows) has 1362 stars and was created the same day. The account was only 2026-09-25 old, with 531 followers (gh api).
- The homepage of nullmothsystems.com self-reports (2026-11-06): supports 235 GPU IDs, 2,464 machines have submitted hardware scans, 407 "Nullintosh" machines posted that they boot, 199 press articles, and "$0 free forever".
- Monetization: only Buy Me a Coffee (40 supporters, plus an NZ$10/month membership tier). The license is PolyForm Noncommercial, which bans commercial use, and the author has said it will "never be sold".
2. Competitors: almost no direct substitutes
| Plan | Type | Timing / scale | How it differs |
|---|---|---|---|
| NVIDIA official Web Driver | Big vendors (gone) | Only went up to macOS 10.13 High Sierra (2018) | Only covered Maxwell/Pascal, never shipped a macOS driver for Turing or newer (Dortania GPU guide, cited in thesatyajit's breakdown) |
| OpenCore Legacy Patcher(dortania) | Open source | Very large, long-established | Only backported the Kepler driver to newer systems; Turing and newer cards not covered |
| Switch to an AMD card / WhateverGreen | Community convention | Years | The old Hackintosh answer was "don't use NVIDIA"; this lets NVIDIA users keep their cards |
| Cobalt64(Almosst-DEV) | Open source | 2026-10-02 created, 191 stars | Same idea (kernel driver + RADV + Metal-on-Vulkan), but for AMD RDNA4. It complements this project rather than competing for the same NVIDIA users |
| NeuralFoundry/rtx-tahoe-lab | Open source | 2026-10-07,1 stars, now paused | Similar experiment, Metal not finished |
| Virtual machines / Apple Silicon | Other | — | Apple Silicon can't use discrete GPUs at all; this only serves Intel Macs and OpenCore PCs |
Bottom line: for "modern NVIDIA + macOS acceleration", it's the only usable option, and that gap has stayed open for eight years.
3. Where users come from
- The Hackintosh community spread it first (confirmed): author null-moth posted "Mac OS Nvidia Driver Out Now" on r/hackintosh; InsanelyMac, tonymacx86 and Olarila forums opened threads the same day; HN submissions only got 3–5 points, so HN didn't drive it (HN Algolia, 2026-10-07 to 10-10).
- Concentrated tech media coverage (confirmed, the main source): 10-07 AppleInsider and The Mac Observer ran first; 10-09 Notebookcheck ran multilingual versions at the same time, with VideoCardz, eTeknix, Hardware Busters, HWUpgrade, Habr and others alongside. The official press page lists 199 articles, including LTT's WAN Show and TechLinked. The star single-day peak of 10-10 came right after this wave of coverage.
- YouTube tutorials (confirmed): there is "It's Official: null-moth Dropped the Full NVIDIA Metal Driver", 1401 install tutorials, and videos and dedicated playlists for black-screen troubleshooting. Long-tail install traffic comes from here.
- Retention and sharing built into the product (confirmed): the 1401 installer lowers the bar from "can configure OpenCore yourself" to "click a few times on Windows"; the boot menu has one-click uninstall, so problems are reversible; the "It boots" wall collects user-posted configurations; Probe collects hardware scans (2,464 machines); plus Discord and a website in 10 languages.
- X: searching nullmoth / hackintosh nvidia in our x-radar corpus returns 0 posts. X isn't a main channel, though it may just be that our corpus missed them (unverified).
- No paid acquisition seen.
4. Why it took off
- Eight years of unmet demand, and the first to deliver: since 2018, modern NVIDIA cards have had no accelerated driver on macOS, and the Hackintosh crowd defaulted to "just buy AMD". thesatyajit's breakdown opens with "Nobody has run a modern NVIDIA card under macOS with real acceleration since 2018".
- The technical approach is new: Metal app → AIR converted to SPIR-V (based on metal2vulkan) → Mesa NVK → NVIDIA's open-source kernel module r610 + GSP firmware running on XNU. It assembles open-source pieces to do what couldn't be done before, and the source is fully public and can be checked, so media could write about it and knowledgeable people were willing to share it.
- The news hook is easy to write: "RTX 5060 running Metal 3 / ray tracing on macOS" is a headline that travels on its own, and multilingual outlets repost it themselves.
- Lowering the install barrier: 1401 can build the full OpenCore setup and installer on Windows, expanding the audience for the first time from Hackintosh veterans to ordinary players with NVIDIA-card PCs. 1401 also picked up 1362 stars.
- Fast iteration: it went from v1 to 2.7.2 in 30 days, adding Tahoe support and kernel security fixes (2.0 Reddit threads and YouTube videos), which kept the community's trust.
5. Differentiation
The differentiation boils down to one thing: it's the only one that works. Others don't even have a usable product; this goes from 0 to 1. The second layer is the combination of "driver + one-click installer + one-click rollback", which makes it safe for newcomers to try. The first point decided it could make the news; the second decided it could keep people.
6. How visible it is
It has already been widely discussed: nearly 200 mainstream tech articles (per the official press page), YouTube tutorials, and active discussion across major Hackintosh forums. But it takes no money, and the license bans commercial use, so the "revenue disclosure" item doesn't apply.
7. Copycats
- Driver forks: HighDelay/nvidia-macos-driver-nvk (41 stars, adds Wine/DXVK/DLSS paths), watchthelight-labs/WTLNvidiaGfx (customized for a single laptop model), and a few same-name mirrors.
- Same architecture applied to other GPUs: watchthelight-labs/WTLIntelGfx (34 stars, Intel Xe/Arc, created 10-21), yusufklncc/intel-gpu-macos-driver (11-05), longurara/ArcMTL (11-01), ntn1007/KeplerMetal (older NVIDIA cards).
- Adjacent tools: joseteo/nvidia-macos-opencore (config repair CLI), plus Hyper-V and QEMU GPU passthrough setups.
- The commercial route is blocked by the license: selling pre-built Hackintosh machines with the driver included is prohibited (hackintoshbuilder.com also mentions this).
8. What others can learn
- Fill the long-term gap that big vendors left open: ship a demoable version first, pair it with an eye-catching title (specific model + specific capability), actively seed forums and Reddit, and let media pick it up.
- Beyond the core tech, a one-click installer and one-click rollback are essential. That layer decides whether users can grow from veterans to ordinary people.
- Turn community feedback into progress and promotion through the photo wall, hardware Probe, and multilingual sites.
- But it can't monetize directly: hardware-hacking projects carry legal and licensing risk, so funding can only come from donations, or possibly enterprise / device licensing later (unverified).
9. Still unclear
- Real install numbers: only the 407 self-reported machines that boot and 2,464 scans; no download counts.
- Whether Apple or NVIDIA will step in (DMCA, system-level blocking), and how long Intel platforms can last after macOS 26 (Tahoe is the last major release to support Intel; it's not covered by this data, unverified).
- The author's identity is unknown, and the account is only 2026-09 old.
- How much the donations bring in is unknown.
