# "A $200/month AI for free": a coding agent traded user data for GPT-6,46 access, gathered 4,800 stars in days, then shut down

**What it is** A desktop and command-line AI coding agent built on the open-source OpenCode. It lets you use GPT-6 series models for free, on the condition that your conversations, sessions and project snapshots are collected by it.

**Why it took off** "ChatGPT Pro for $2,400 a year, here for ¥0" appealed strongly to Indian students. Tutorial videos and invite referrals pushed signups to a self-reported 49k. Login requires GitHub, and the maintenance page also asks for stars, so signup traffic converted into stars.

**D** **How you can follow it** Don't copy it. Take only its star-farming tactics: GitHub login, asking for stars on every waiting page, using quota as prizes for a low-cost hackathon, and applying it to a project you already have real demand for.

D grade: its stars rest on inference costs of tens of thousands of dollars a day, paid for by data buyers. Followers have neither of those. The "free frontier model" theme already has 60k-star peers, and it has itself shut down. Circulating in small circles

omnirush-ai/omnirush-gui is a desktop and command-line AI coding agent. Its pitch is one line: frontier GPT-6 series models, free to use. It spread through tutorial posts and YouTube videos aimed at Indian students, reporting 22k signups in 49 days and going from zero to 4,807 stars on GitHub in 46 days. The bill was paid with users' coding data. Starting Nov 3, service went into "indefinite maintenance" and stopped working, while the maintenance page still asks people to star the repo. The star-count tactics are easy to copy; the money behind them is not.

### A user who can no longer use it, and a line asking for a star while you wait

In 2026 Nov 5, a user named Mohd063 opened an issue in the repo titled "OmniRush has been under maintenance since Nov 3, can't use the coding agent". He wrote: "My daily development work depends on OmniRush." No one replied.

Open the omnirush.ai console and the top line reads: "OmniRush is under maintenance until further notice. While you wait, a ⭐ on GitHub helps more people find us." The service has stopped, but the stars keep climbing: from 11-03 to 11-06, another 162 stars (daily GitHub star count).

### What it is

An Electron desktop client, plus an `omnirush` command-line tool on npm, for macOS, Windows, and Linux. It works like Claude Code or Codex: point it at your project folder and have it edit code and run tests. The engine later switched to the open-source OpenCode 2 (someone surfaced this in issue #336 on the repo), so its real difference isn't how the agent writes code but who pays for the model: the homepage compares "ChatGPT Pro for one year at $240 to $2,400 vs OmniRush at $0," and the models offered are GPT 6 Astra and GPT 6.1 Sol.

In 46 days it shipped 100+ versions (v1.0.0 was 9-21, v3.8.2 was 10-30). It runs fast, and the product itself works.

### Where the free compute comes from

The answer is in the FAQ and privacy policy: signing up requires agreeing to a data agreement, and your conversations, agent sessions, workspace snapshots, and uploaded projects get collected. They "may be used to train and evaluate AI models and may be provided to research, evaluation, and model development partners." Once in a dataset, content "may not be recallable or deletable."

The quota rules read like a data acceptance spec (omnirush.ai/guide):

- A "qualifying session" must happen in the project's own folder, change at least 2 code files and 30 lines, **must have the agent compile, run, or run tests** , and finish the final round;

- No cloud tools, remote git, Docker, remote databases, or web browsing. It has to be reproducible locally;

- "Keep recording on: sessions not recorded don't count";

- Each session that passes gets a daily quota boost for the next week; if the pass rate is low, quotas get cut.

The Buildathon judging asks for "rebuild on a clean Linux box with Docker and run the tests offline," which is exactly the format RL training environments and coding eval tasks use. The core engineer, Samrat Talukdar (GitHub ogsamrat, Kolkata, author of most commits), lists Parsewave as his company, a firm that supplies training and eval data to US frontier AI labs. Whether OmniRush is a Parsewave project or who buys the data, I couldn't find. But the shape is clear: free inference in exchange for real people running real projects and producing agent trajectories with test results (inference).

The cost is also substantial. The site reports 14B tokens per day and 260B cumulative. At frontier-model prices, that's on the order of tens of thousands of dollars a day (rough estimate, discounts unknown). Service stopped in Nov 3, most likely over money, model supply, or compliance (inference).

### Where users came from: Indian "free GPT-6" tutorials

In Oct 7, Samrat wrote on LinkedIn: "35k+ users, 110k+ GUI downloads, 2.4k+ stars... We did no large-scale marketing. People on Instagram and YouTube picked it up on their own, and some videos have 200k+ views."

The videos I could find are mostly Indian, in Hindi or Indian-accented English, with one title pattern: Techno Vedant's "Open AI GPT 6 Astra For FREE with 15 Million Credits" (10-125k views) and bumtastik's "How to Get ChatGPT Plus for FREE?! GPT-6 Astra" (10-1.13M views) (YouTube, 11-06). On Instagram there's a batch of reels saying "comment GPT, get 10M daily credits," the typical format of Indian AI-tool repost accounts. Whether these creators were paid, I couldn't find out.

The product adds three layers of amplification:

- **Invites and account linking** : inviting someone raises your weekly cap, linking Discord or GitHub each adds daily quota, plus a leaderboard, a spin wheel, and an ambassador program. They claim 8,600+ people came through friend referrals.

- **Low-cost hackathon** : "Frontier Buildathon 2026" runs on India's Unstop platform, giving each participant 10M tokens (nominally $300), with cash prizes of only $300. They claim 2,400+ people joined and 190 projects were submitted.

- **Freebie lists and SEO** : the site publishes articles like "How to use GPT for coding for free" and "OmniRush vs Freebuff," and they got picked up by free-credit roundups like Awesome-Hidden-AI-Credits-Free.

They claim 23% are students and 10k+ people come from 100+ universities (omnirush.ai/growth, updated 10-19). Hacker News, Product Hunt, and X's English tech circles have no discussion of it; what shows up on Reddit is mostly "is this a scam."

### How the stars came

| Timeline | Stars | What happened |
|---|---|---|
| 09-21 | 0 | The repo, the only one in this GitHub org |
| 10-07 | About 2,400 | The engineer posts on LinkedIn "we blew up" |
| 10-16 ~ 10-27 | 3,433 → 3,823, +20 to +60 per day | During the Buildathon |
| 10-28 | +338 (single-day peak) | They posted 3.8.0 / 3.8.1 on those days; I couldn't find the cause |
| 10-29 ~ 11-02 | +60 to +130 per day | |
| Service stopped from 11-03 | +36 to +88 per day | The maintenance page asks people to star the repo |
| 11-06 | 4,807,140 fork | |

(Daily GitHub star counts, from 10-16.)

The stars are a byproduct of signup traffic. Signup requires a GitHub account older than 7 days (anti-abuse), so users are already on GitHub. Add the maintenance page and LinkedIn posts directly asking for stars, and conversion is naturally high. Only 140 forks, about 3% of stars, suggests most people who starred were not developers who wanted to change the code.

Usage declined: npm CLI daily downloads went from 10-16 to 10-18 at 12k to 15k per day, falling to 700 to 1,900 in November. Discord claims 17k people at one point, and 11-06 has 4,968 left (npm, Discord, 11-06).

### Who else is in the space

| Project | Stars | Compared with alternatives |
|---|---|---|
| dsh-our-free-model | 63,567 (10-09 first 4,454) | 9-24 repo, same period and theme, no login, no key, unlimited DeepSeek / Kimi; stars are 13× OmniRush's |
| CodebuffAI/freebuff | 13,985 | Earlier; ran on ads, used free models, mostly CLI |
| anus-dev/ANUS | 6,559 | CLI running "the strongest free model of the day" |
| OmniRoute / CLIProxyAPI / 9router | 79k / 58k / 32k | Aggregates free quotas from several providers into an API for other agents; doesn't pay for the models itself |
| OpenCode / Codex CLI / Cline | 225k / 133k / 71k | Requires your own key or subscription; OmniRush runs on OpenCode under the hood |

(GitHub, 11-06.)

This table shows that "free frontier models for coding" was already a star-earning theme in autumn 2026, and it was already crowded. OmniRush isn't first and doesn't have the most stars. What it adds is two things: it offers closed-source GPT-6, and it has a desktop interface. The interface is a shell over OpenCode and doesn't count as a moat. What actually drew people was someone paying for GPT-6 on their behalf.

### If it were you

**Verdict: don't copy it. Its stars were bought with tens of thousands of dollars a day in inference, paid for by data buyers. You have neither. And the theme itself is already taken by similar projects with 60k stars, and it has shut down.**

**Who it's for** : developers who want to learn how to turn signup traffic into GitHub stars; teams that already have compute or a data buyer and were going to build a data-collection product anyway (in that case the stars are a side effect, and what you're building is a data business).

**Who it's not for** : solo developers who want to build another "free GPT / free Claude coding agent" to chase stars. You can't afford the model costs, it doesn't survive without collecting data, and once you collect data it gets dismissed as a scam on Reddit. dsh-our-free-model, Freebuff, and OmniRoute already hold the "free models" and "free quota aggregation" spots.

**How to do it** : don't copy the product. Take three moves and apply them to your own project:

1. **Log in with GitHub, and require the account to be 7 days old** : it prevents abuse and sends every signup straight to your repo page;

2. **Put a star ask wherever users stop and wait** : maintenance pages, quota-exhausted notices, install-complete screens;

3. **Run a hackathon with credits as the prize** : if your project has cloud credits to give away, post it on a student platform like Unstop. The cash prizes are small, and participation can reach the thousands.

**How to get users** : these three moves assume you have a free thing people already want. The Indian student "get premium AI for free" tutorial accounts on Instagram and YouTube are a real channel, but they only carry the category "get paid things for free"; other themes don't work there.

**When the window closes** : the "free frontier model" window follows big-vendor pricing. If a major vendor cuts prices again or releases another free tier, the appeal of projects like this drops. It already is dropping.

**What would show you're wrong** : (1) OmniRush comes back, and stars and signups keep climbing, meaning "data for compute" can sustain itself long-term. Then it's a data business worth studying, not just a star grab. (2) A "free coding agent" appears that doesn't pay for model costs and relies only on a better interface or experience, and it reaches ten thousand stars. That would mean the theme isn't saturated yet.

## Why omnirush-ai/omnirush-gui (OmniRush) took off

> Research date 2026-11-06. Sources noted after figures; "unverified" means no primary evidence was found.

### One line

OmniRush is a desktop + CLI AI coding agent (Electron/TypeScript, running on the OpenCode 2 engine underneath). Its pitch is "200 dollars/month of AI, free": free access to frontier models like GPT-6 Astra / GPT-6.1 Sol. **Its real business is collecting agent coding trajectory data** . You must sign a data agreement at signup, and conversations, agent sessions, workspace snapshots and project uploads are all collected, "may be used to train and evaluate AI models and may be provided to research, evaluation and model-development partners." The daily quota rules are built around "uploading a qualifying, locally reproducible, test-passing real coding session." Users came for "free GPT-6", spread through Instagram and YouTube tutorials among Indian students and new developers. GitHub stars were a side effect, and partly something the product asked for (the maintenance page literally says "while you wait, drop us a star"). **Service has been "under maintenance indefinitely" since 2026-11-03** , and users can no longer use it.

### 2. Competitors

| Product | Where | When | Scale | How it differs from OmniRush |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Freebuff(CodebuffAI/freebuff) | Open-source CLI + product | Repo 2024-07, launched on PH 2026-08-14 (266 votes) | 13,985 stars (repo on github 11-06); claims to sell ads to 500k developers (PH "Freebuff Ads" 9-22) | Ads fund a free tier, using "the smartest free model". OmniRush sells "frontier GPT-6 free" + data-for-quota, and has a desktop GUI. The OmniRush site even has a dedicated "OmniRush vs Freebuff" comparison page. |
| dsh-our-free-model(Ebony-Vinyl) | Open-source plugins | 2026-09-24 | 63,567 stars (GitHub API 11-06; 10-09 had only 4,454) | No login, no key, DeepSeek V4.1 Flash / Kimi K3 unlimited; same period, same theme, and its stars were 13× OmniRush's |
| ANUS(anus-dev/ANUS) | Open source CLI | 2025-03 | 6,559 star | Runs "the strongest free model of the day", no GUI, no frontier closed-source models |
| alphacode(dragonked2) | Open-source Rust agent | 2026-09-01 | 560 star | Built-in free models + BYOK, small scale |
| OmniRoute / CLIProxyAPI / 9router | Open-source gateway | 2025–2026 | 79k / 58k / 32k star | Aggregates various vendors' free quotas/subscriptions into an API for other agents; OmniRush is a complete agent app whose models it pays for itself |
| OpenCode / Codex CLI / Gemini CLI / Qwen Code / Crush / Kilo / Cline | Open-source agents | 2024–2025 | 225k / 133k / 109k / 29k / 29k / 28k / 71k star | Requires your own key or subscription; OmniRush actually runs on the OpenCode 2 engine (issue #336). The difference is "it pays for the models" |
| ChatGPT Plus/Pro, Claude Pro/Max, Codex app | big tech | — | — | Paid; the OmniRush site directly compares "$240–$2,400/year vs $0" |
| "Free GPT-6 Astra" chat sites like 1min.ai | Web | 2026 | Not verified | Chat only, not a local agent |

Takeaway: "free frontier-model coding agents" were a crowded theme in 2026 fall (dsh-our-free-model got ~60k more stars in the same period). OmniRush was not the first, nor the one with the most stars.

### 3. Growth tactics (where users come from)

1. **Indian Instagram Reels / YouTube "Free GPT-6 Astra" tutorials (confirmed)** . Core engineer Samrat Talukdar (GitHub ogsamrat, Kolkata, 1,170 commits, the vast majority) 10-07 wrote on LinkedIn: "35k+ users, 110k+ GUI downloads, 18k+ npm downloads, 2.4k+ stars, 1M+ views... We did no large-scale marketing. People on Instagram and YouTube picked it up themselves, and some videos have 200k+ views." Videos found: Techno Vedant "Open AI GPT 6 Astra For FREE with 15 Million Credits" (10-01,24,872 views, in Hindi), bumtastik "How to Get ChatGPT Plus for FREE?! GPT-6 Astra" (10-11,27,631), CS CORNER Sunita Rai (10-11,7,337), Mohd MILLAT (10-10,1,546) (YouTube Data API). Instagram has many reels in the "comment GPT to get 10M daily credits" style (instagram.com/reel/Dd88C_SNeo4, etc.), and TikTok has Indian account ajaysahani0520 with "GET FREE 15 MILLION AI TOKENS" (10-27,376 views). These "comment a keyword to claim resources" formats are the typical playbook of Indian AI-tool repost accounts. Whether creators were paid is unverified.

2. **Invite referral loop + quota incentives (confirmed)** . Invites raise the weekly cap, binding Discord or GitHub adds daily quota, plus a leaderboard, a "spins" wheel, and an ambassador program (the guide page and privacy policy mention ambassador programs). Self-reported 8,600+ people came via friend referrals.

3. **Buildathon (confirmed)** . "Frontier Buildathon 2026", registration 10-14~10-19, submission 10-20, listed on India's Unstop platform. Each participant gets 10M GPT-6 Astra tokens (stated value $300), while the prize pool is only $300. Self-reported 2,400+ participants and 190 projects. Promo posts appeared on Reddit r/hackathon, Instagram and Facebook.

4. **GitHub stars were requested (confirmed)** . The website and console maintenance page say: "While you wait, a ⭐ on GitHub helps more people find us: ⭐ Star on GitHub". The LinkedIn post ends with "drop a star if you like it". Users want quota and are asked to bind GitHub, so star conversion was naturally high. The direct cause of the single-day +338 jump on 10-28 was not found (they shipped 3.8.0/3.8.1 those days and added a "Claude Code as model" route; whether related is unverified).

5. **SEO / freebie-list placement (confirmed)** . The official blog has posts like "How to use GPT models for coding for free" and "OmniRush vs Freebuff". It was listed in oniondas/Awesome-Hidden-AI-Credits-Free, r/BestGitHubRepos, the aipromonow promo site, and SourceForge mirrors.

6. **Not on HN / Product Hunt / X** : our hackernews and producthunt databases return nothing; the local x-radar corpus has 0 entries. This suggests a product that ran almost entirely within the Indian student circle plus Instagram/YouTube, which the English tech world didn't notice.

### 4. Where the money comes back: the user's data is the payment

- Website FAQ "What happens to what I share?": collects "chats, agent sessions, workspace snapshots, and project uploads", which "may be used to train and evaluate AI models and may be provided to research, evaluation and model-development partners." Privacy policy: may "share or license relevant materials with ... model-development partners", and content that goes into a model/dataset "may not be recalled or deleted". The blog also says it is "funded by brand ads" (the code has #313 "richer sponsored card").

- The quota rules (omnirush.ai/guide) are effectively a data-quality standard: **each session that passes the quality check adds quota for each day of the following week** . A "good session" must be in the project's own folder, modify at least 2 code files and 30 lines, **have the agent compile/run/run tests** , and complete its final round. Sessions on Windows/macOS earn the most. **Cloud tools, remote git, Docker, remote databases and the web are not allowed** (it must be locally reproducible). **"Keep recording on: a session that isn't recorded can't count"** , and if the share of qualifying sessions is low, quota is cut. Buildathon judging requires "Docker rebuild on clean Linux, run tests offline", which is exactly the format needed for RL environments / coding eval tasks.

- The core engineer's GitHub company field says **Parsewave** , a company that provides training and eval data (reasoning traces, RL environments, evals) to "major US frontier AI labs" (parsewave.ai). Whether OmniRush is a Parsewave project and who the data is sold to is **unverified** , but the motive and shape match closely: free inference in exchange for real users' agent trajectories in real projects, with test results, which is very valuable to labs.

- Cost: self-reported 14B tokens/day and 260B cumulative tokens. At frontier model prices that is tens of thousands of dollars a day in inference (rough estimate, discounts unverified). 11-03's indefinite "maintenance" most likely means money, model supply, or compliance problems (unverified).

### 5. Why it took off

1. **Brutal price anchor** : "ChatGPT Pro $200/month → $0", and the models offered were the latest GPT-6 series at the time. For Indian students and beginners this was a must-have pull.

2. **Found the right audience and channel** : Indian students + Instagram/YouTube "get GPT-6 free" tutorials + "comment a keyword for credits" reels, which spread on their own. 23% students and 10k+ university users are the evidence.

3. **Gamified quota turns users into data workers** : invites, account binding, qualifying sessions, spins, leaderboard, Buildathon. It drives signups and keeps uploaded data quality up. Retention rests on "free quota that refreshes daily" (self-reported 1,700+ people returned more than 3 days a week, versus 49k signups, only about 3.5%).

4. **Anti-abuse gates** : a GitHub account older than 7 days is required, along with partial manual review. This also pushes users to GitHub, so stars rose with it. The maintenance page then explicitly asked for stars.

5. **Fast execution** : 46 days, 100+ releases (v1.0.0 9-21 → v3.8.2 10-30), desktop on three platforms plus CLI, swapped to the OpenCode 2 engine. The product itself actually worked.

### 6. Differentiation

Compared with free coding agents like Freebuff, dsh-our-free-model, and ANUS, OmniRush differs in that: (a) it gives access to a closed-source frontier model (GPT-6 Astra), not a free open-source model; (b) it has a full desktop GUI (most are CLI/plugins); (c) it openly trades data for credits, and uses credit rules to push users toward producing high-quality, reproducible coding sessions.

Is it why it took off? **(a) yes, (b) somewhat, (c) is what lets it fund free credits, but it's not why users came** . Users came only because of "free GPT-6"; the GUI is just a shell over the OpenCode engine and isn't a moat. Its star count is also far below the contemporaneous dsh-our-free-model, which shows the "free frontier model" theme itself can earn stars, and OmniRush is just one of several players.

### 7. Visibility and copycats

- Visibility: it's spreading in small circles. Indian students and new developers talk about it heavily on Instagram, YouTube, LinkedIn, and Discord (self-reported 49k signups, Discord once 17k). But it's absent from HN, Product Hunt, the X tech crowd, and mainstream media. On Reddit the discussion is mostly "is this a scam?" (r/ScamChecker).

- Copycats: the similar dsh-our-free-model (9-2.46M stars) appeared almost simultaneously, and Freebuff came earlier. I found no clear evidence of anyone copying OmniRush directly.

- Status: 11-03 went down for "maintenance" and stopped. Discord fell from a self-reported 17k to 4,968, and npm daily downloads dropped from 15k to roughly 1–2 thousand. The project may be close to finished.

### 8. What to borrow

- "Trading data for compute" is a workable cold-start structure. If you have data needs that model labs would pay for, you can use free inference as currency, and use credit rules (must run tests, locally reproducible, recording on, credits scaled by quality) to shape user behavior into the data format you want.

- Distribution aimed at Indian students: "get XX premium AI for free" plus Instagram comments that unlock credits, plus low-prize hackathons on Unstop (prizes of only $300, with tokens as the reward). The cost is very low.

- Use GitHub login gated on an account age of at least 7 days to prevent abuse and get GitHub exposure at the same time.

- The risks are just as instructive: inference cost rises linearly with tokens, and shutting down means losing users; the data agreement terms were discussed on Reddit as a scam.

### 9. Uncertain

- The company behind OmniRush, its relationship to Parsewave, and who the data is sold to: unverified.

- Whether "GPT 6 Astra" is really served natively by OpenAI, and whether there are discounts or partnerships: unverified. The terms say it may be answered by an equivalent or newer model.

- Why 11-03 shut down and whether it will come back: unverified.

- The specific source of 10-28's +338 stars in a single day; whether Instagram influencers were paid; how many stars came from credit incentives: unverified (the stargazer API returned 404, so sampling isn't possible).

- The self-reported 49k signups / 73k users have no third-party corroboration.
