One 1-minute 42-second Xiaohongshu video pushed a late-entering AI video tool to 5000 stars
What it is An open-source tool that lets the coding AI you already use turn a video into a web page, then lets you hand-edit it in a local editor like CapCut.
Why it took off It landed right in the wave of Opus 5.5 making videos with code. The founder posted the first video on Xiaohongshu, speaking to non-editors who don't want to learn editing and pitching the pain point. A one-click desktop installer and an editor you can manually tweak made it accessible to beginners, and then Chinese and English AI bloggers and listicle posts relayed it.
CHow you could follow it Don't build yet another AI video library. Take the same playbook (coding AI + a hand-editable editor + one-click installer + a Xiaohongshu launch) and apply it to other content formats like presentation decks, poster image-text, or podcasts.

A Tsinghua graduate who moved to Dali to become an indie developer created an open-source repo called OpenFilm in Oct 4: it lets coding AIs like Claude Code and Codex make videos, plus a manual editor. It entered the scene later than Remotion and HyperFrames, and that slot was already crowded, yet it climbed to 5000 stars within a month. What mattered wasn't the technology but where the first video was posted and who it was aimed at. Below: how it took off, how crowded this slot is, and what people wanting to build open-source projects for stars can take from it.
The Oct 10 evening note at 9 p.m.
On Oct 10, 2026, at 9:13 p.m. Beijing time, Xiaohongshu user riverisbuilding posted a video note titled "To stop editing videos, I built this...", running 1 minutes 42 seconds, tagged #vibecoding大赏 #opus #remotion #hyperframes. The video itself was made end-to-end with OpenFilm, and the same clip later became the release video on the GitHub homepage.
By Nov 6, the note had 14,996 likes, 24,716 saves, 1,088 comments, and 4,829 shares (Xiaohongshu public data, 11-06). Saves outnumbering likes is the classic hit pattern of "save the tool now, use it later." The most representative comment: "Claude Code is not installed on this computer. What's going on, I can't use it". Many people commenting weren't programmers at all.
GitHub lagged behind: 10-12 had only 126 stars, while npm downloads jumped from single digits to several hundred per day over the same period. Xiaohongshu users would go download it, but they didn't necessarily click star.
What it is
In one line: it turns the coding AI you already use into a video AI, and you can still edit like CapCut afterward.
- The video is written as a web page: a
film.htmluses<section>as tracks, cutting animated pages, live footage, images, and audio together. Each shot only needs to implement aframe(t)function, where "the same t always draws the same frame." No need to learn React (the Remotion approach) or framework conventions (the HyperFrames approach). - The local editor, Studio: drag, scale, and edit any element in the AI-generated visuals, change text and colors, and cut clips on a timeline. Edits save back to the files, and the AI preserves them the next time it edits. It can also export to Final Cut, Premiere, and DaVinci.
- The desktop version bundles ffmpeg and a headless browser, so it works on download with no environment setup.
- MIT license, completely free; voiceover, music, and images use the user's own ElevenLabs, OpenAI, fal, and other API keys.
Why it took off
Timing. At the end of September, the Opus 5.5 video made purely with code went viral online. Within two days of September 26 and 27, a batch of repos like awesome-opus5-5-videos, lemo-opuscar, and opus-video-prompts popped up on GitHub, and "AI writes code to make videos" became the hottest topic. OpenFilm started in Oct 4, and 6 days later it already had a viral video, right at the peak of demand.
They picked the right audience. Similar projects mostly shout "new framework" at developers on GitHub, X, and HN. OpenFilm fired its first shot on Xiaohongshu, aimed at creators and office workers who "want to make videos but don't want to learn editing." The headline names the pain point (no more video editing), not the technology (HTML format, frame functions). Same hook: the founder's English tweet on X got only 10-19 likes and 10 views, and Show HN earned just 740 points (Hacker News, 1 10-19).
It reached non-technical users. This is what really sets it apart from the pile of "Claude Code skill packs." Looking at GitHub Releases download counts (11-06): Windows installers total 45,948 downloads across all versions, and the two Mac versions combined come to about 9,000. Windows accounts for over 80%, so the bulk of users aren't Mac developers. Non-technical users fear two things: failing to install it, and making something they can't edit. The one-click installer and the hand-editable Studio solved exactly those two problems.
Fast updates. From 10-10 to 10-30 it shipped 13 versions, and among the contributors there's a group of Chinese developers, so the author isn't the only one writing code.
Where users come from
| Timeline | What happened | Volume |
|---|---|---|
| 10-10 | The founder's Xiaohongshu launch: "To stop editing videos, I built this..." | 15k likes, 25k saves (11-06) |
| 10-17~18 | Chinese AI-circle X bloggers relayed it in bulk ("the latest open-source project from Tsinghua grad riverisbuilding"); the Xiaohongshu account "荔枝的AI折腾日常" posted the tutorial "Codex Automated Editing Tutorial (Episode 3)"; intro videos appeared on Bilibili; v0.2.0 was released at the same time | 10-18 single-day +358 stars, the observed peak; that Xiaohongshu tutorial got 549 likes and 843 saves, Bilibili 2,768 views |
| From ¥10-19 | AlphaSignal wrote a feature article; English AI tool repost accounts relayed it: @IntCyberDigest (10-2.52M views), Instagram traffic accounts saying "comment FILM and I'll DM you the link" | — |
| 10-20~31 | A batch of ordinary Xiaohongshu users wrote tutorials on their own: "Editing videos with Codex, install OpenFilm," "AI editing gained me a thousand followers in ten days," "The god-tier AI auto-editing skill" | Single posts with dozens to hundreds of likes and hundreds of saves |
| 11-01 | On X, a list titled "10 GitHub repos that make motion designers optional" ranked it second, and it was then copied by accounts in several languages | 22k views |
| Always there | Listed in skill directories, AI navigation sites, and awesome lists; npx skills add openfilm/openfilm installs it into an agent in one line | After 10-22 it steadily gained 150–230 stars per day |
The Chinese X posts from that 10-17 batch have very similar copy and tightly clustered timing. Whether this was organic spread or mutual promotion has no evidence, unverified. No ad buys were found, and it wasn't launched on Product Hunt.
Star counts (GitHub daily snapshots): 10-16 399 → 10-18 809 → 10-24 2,310 → 11-06 4,877, and the live GitHub reading that day already passed 5,000. Over the last 7 days +1,307, the first 7 days +1,798; growth is slowing, but hasn't stopped.
Who it's competing with
This slot was one of the most crowded spots on GitHub in autumn 2026: in the last 120 days, repos with both "video" and "agent / Claude / Codex" in their descriptions numbered around 40 with more than 700 stars.
| Project | Scale (stars) | How OpenFilm differs |
|---|---|---|
| HyperFrames(HeyGen) | 79.9k | Also HTML-to-video, from a big company, at far larger scale; but it's just a rendering framework, with no editor for changing AI-generated elements |
| Remotion | 71k | A veteran React video framework from 2020; agents have to install dependencies and configure the framework, which makes errors easy to hit |
| video-use(browser-use) | 30.6k | Drop footage into a folder, chat your way to a finished cut. Mostly real footage, no visual editor |
| hypit | 28k | Copies viral videos, different positioning |
| video-shotcraft | 17k | Remotion-based shot-recipe skill, no editor |
| lemo-opuscar | 12.6k (~7 days +3,233) | Sells 66 film styles, often listed alongside OpenFilm in "top video libraries" roundups; there are already dozens of copycat repos |
| OpenChatCut, BaoCut, WeftCut, etc. | 300~2.9k | The closest in direction: a chat-based editor, but all ship their own AI. OpenFilm flips it, using the Claude Code / Codex you already have as the brain |
OpenFilm's star count is only mid-tier in this slot. It didn't win "first"; it won "first to pitch to non-coders that non-coders can actually install." No real copycat at scale yet, just a few small same-name repos with 0 stars. Also, on Xiaohongshu an unrelated film-camera filter app is also called "OpenFilm6K," so searches get mixed up.
If it were you
Verdict: Don't build another open-source "AI makes video" library. This slot already has 40 projects with a thousand+ stars, and big players like HeyGen are in it. You won't out-late and out-loud OpenFilm. What's worth taking is its playbook: build a tool for coding AI that non-coders can use, wrap it in a hand-editable editor, package a one-click installer, and post the first video on Xiaohongshu. That playbook applied to a different content format still has open space.
Good fit: Developers who can handle desktop packaging (Electron / Tauri) and some front-end editor work. Better still if you make short videos and are willing to show your face and tell your own story.
Not a fit: Anyone who only writes command-line tools and won't touch UI or installers, or who just wants stars from posting on GitHub and HN. OpenFilm itself only got 1 points on HN.
How to do it:
- Change the format: slide decks, posters and Xiaohongshu image posts, podcasts and audiobooks, data reports. All are things AI can draft but a human must revise. Use open formats (HTML, Markdown, things AI already handles well) and write edits back to the source files so AI can keep iterating.
- Fill the gaps OpenFilm left: Chinese subtitle and talking-head editing templates, ready-made styles for vertical short video, a one-click version that doesn't need your own API key. "Can't get it installed" and "where do I download it" in Xiaohongshu comments are the demand.
- Ship the Windows installer first, with all dependencies bundled.
How to get users: Make the first video with the product itself. Title it something like "To stop doing X, I built this," post it on Xiaohongshu, with the author on camera or at least in first person. Then have Chinese AI-circle X accounts and Xiaohongshu tutorial accounts pick it up (they want "magic tool" content). On the English side, don't push it yourself. Wait for AlphaSignal, repost accounts, and "top GitHub repos" lists to pick it up.
How much time you have: The "AI makes things with code" wave Opus 5.5 kicked off probably has room until late this year or early next year. OpenFilm went from repo to viral in 6 days, so move fast. Measure in weeks, not months.
Signs you're wrong: If your first Xiaohongshu video gets over 10k saves but GitHub stars don't move and nobody downloads the installer, those users saved it and never used it. The playbook's conversion is falling. If OpenFilm itself slows to a few dozen stars a day while HyperFrames adds an editor, then "hand-editable" isn't a moat, and a big player can take it with one feature. Conversely, if someone runs the same playbook in another format and gets several thousand stars within weeks, the path is open.

Why OpenFilm (openfilm/openfilm) took off
Channel: GitHub. Data as of 2026-11-06. Sources: our GitHub repo library (repo_day / repo_profile), GitHub API, npm downloads API, TikHub Xiaohongshu search, x-radar / X live search, hackernews library, Jina web search.
One line
OpenFilm is an open-source "AI video agent." It has Claude Code / Codex and other coding agents write a film as a web page (one film.html plus one frame(t) function per shot), then adds a local editor, Studio, so what the AI makes can be edited by hand. The main reason it took off is that the founder's first Xiaohongshu video went viral (15k likes, 25k saves, 1088 comments), and the timing landed right in the "Opus 5.5 makes video with code" wave. Compared with similar projects, it also ships a real editor and Windows/Mac desktop installers with ffmpeg built in, so creators who don't code can actually use it.
Key facts
- Repo created 2026-10-04. Author riverisbuilding (GitHub bio says Tsinghua; another Xiaohongshu post reads "Two years after graduating from Tsinghua, I moved my desk to the seaside in Dali"). MIT license.
- Stars: 10-12 126 → 10-16 399 → 10-18 809 (+358 that day, the highest single-day gain in the observation window) → 10-24 2310 → 11-06 4877 (GitHub API reading that day about 5000). Last 7 days +1307, first 7 days +1798. Growth is slowing, but it still adds 150–230 a day (github library repo_day). 467 forks, fork rate about 9.6%.
- Actual usage is far higher than the star count suggests:
- Cumulative desktop installer downloads across all versions: Windows
OpenFilm-Setup-x64.exe45,948 times, Mac arm64 dmg 8,222 times, Mac x64 dmg 742 times (GitHub Releases API, 11-06; may include duplicate downloads from auto-update, unverified). Windows accounts for over 80%, so most users are not Mac developers. - npm package
openfilm: since 10-22, 1000–4000 downloads a day, peaking at 10-27 4156 (npm downloads API).
- Cumulative desktop installer downloads across all versions: Windows
- Iteration is fast: from 10-10 to 10-30 there were 13 releases (v0.1.3 → v0.2.7). 11-05 also brought a companion skill library, skill-replicate. Contributors include a group of Chinese-named IDs (WEBGRS with 41 commits, rick-mingyu-liu, yunloong-Y, zhoushoujianwork, and others), so the community is more than the author alone.
- No revenue: completely free. Voiceover, music and image generation run on the user's own ElevenLabs, OpenAI, fal, etc. keys. No income to speak of.
Check the competition first: this slot is extremely crowded
In 2026-09, videos made with pure code by Opus 5.5 went viral online (in September 26–27 a batch of repos appeared at once: awesome-opus5-5-videos, lemo-opuscar, opus-video-prompts, awesome-claude-video-skills). "Let coding agents make video" became the hottest slot on GitHub. In our library, repos from the last 120 days whose descriptions mention video plus agent/Claude/Codex, with over 700 stars: about 40.
| Product | Form | Launched | Scale | How OpenFilm differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Remotion | Open-source framework (write video in React) | 2020 | 71k star | A React framework with a commercial license. Agents have to install dependencies and configure the framework, which makes errors easy. OpenFilm's pitch is "no framework, one function." |
| HyperFrames(HeyGen) | Open-source framework (HTML → MP4) | 2026-03 | 79.9k star | Same HTML approach, from a big company, far larger in scale. But it's a rendering framework: no editor where you can drag clips or edit text the way OpenFilm's can, and it doesn't handle real-footage editing. |
| video-use(browser-use) | Open source, Claude Code cuts real footage | 2026-04 | 30.6k star | Leans toward "drop footage in a folder, chat your way to a finished cut." No visual editor. |
| hypit-ai/hypit | Open source, clones viral videos | 2026-07 | 28k star | Copies other people's viral videos (face swaps, rewording, B-roll swaps). Different positioning. |
| video-shotcraft | Claude Code skill (based on Remotion) | 2026-07 | 17k star | A skill / shot recipes that depend on Remotion. No editor. |
| lemo-opuscar | Claude Code style pack | 2026-09-26 | 12.6k stars (+7 in the last 3233 days) | Sells 66 film styles. OpenFilm sells format + editor. The two are often put in the same "top video libraries" list. |
| ffmpeg-skill | Local editing tool + MCP | 2026-09 | 4.6k star | Only gives agents editing commands. No image generation, no visual editor. |
| OpenChatCut / BaoCut / WeftCut / ai-video-editor / open-edit(veed) | Open-source chat-driven video editor | 2026-05~07 | 300~2.9k star | The closest opportunity (AI video editor with a timeline) is a video editor that ships its own agent. OpenFilm flips it: it uses the Claude Code or Codex you already have as the brain. |
| Big-company features | Claude / Codex themselves | — | — | You can already ask Claude to write HTML animation screen recordings, but there's no timeline, no render pipeline, and no way to hand-edit. |
Verdict: there's no such thing as "nobody's doing this." OpenFilm entered late (after Remotion, HyperFrames, and video-use), and its star count sits mid-pack in this slot.
Growth tactics: where users came from
- Xiaohongshu, posted by the founder himself. This is the spark (confirmed). TikHub Xiaohongshu search: riverisbuilding's post "To stop editing videos, I built this...", published 2026-10-10, 14,986 likes, 24,705 saves, 1,088 comments; also a post titled "The laziest editing tutorial on the internet" (10-18,168 likes). npm downloads jumped from 10-10–10-12 to 382/757/574, and the timing lines up. On X, @Hypewangyolo posted 10-18: "This guy… his first Xiaohongshu video got tens of thousands of saves and likes." Saves outnumber likes, the classic pattern of a tutorial/tool people bookmark for later hit.
- Chinese AI-circle X accounts relaying it (confirmed; whether any organization was behind it is unverified). Between 10-17 and 10-18, a batch of Chinese AI bloggers posted almost simultaneously: @lwssfxhj "Tsinghua grad riverisbuilding's latest open-source project OpenFilm, Oct 17" (1112 views), @nicebabycat (1135 views), @Hypewangyolo, @NailongxzQvQ, and others, all with heavily promotional copy. Meanwhile a Bilibili video, "No editing skills needed: let the coding AI make your videos | open-source tool OpenFilm" (10-18,2768 plays), appeared. This matches the timing of 10-17 shipping v0.2.0 and the +358 stars in a single day at 10-18.
- The English side reused the same hook (confirmed, performed mediocrely). The founder 10-19 posted on X "To never edit a video again, I built this..." (10 likes, 740 views) and posted the same thread on Reddit r/BuildWithClaude. Show HN only got 1 points (hackernews database, 10-19). The English posts he made himself mostly didn't gain traction.
- A second wave from AI tool aggregator accounts and listicle posts (confirmed). AlphaSignal 10-19 wrote a dedicated piece (1.3k stars at the time); @IntCyberDigest 10-25 (196 likes, 17k views) and a matching Instagram repost; on Instagram, @dailyfindsdev and @seb.ai (a "comment FILM and I'll send you the link" lead-gen account) made Reels. 11-01 @socialwithaayan's "10 GitHub repos that make motion designers optional" (338 likes, 22k views) placed it second, and it was then copied by multiple accounts in Persian and English. After 10-22, the steady 200 stars per day came mostly from this kind of long-tail repost.
- Listed in skill directories and navigation sites (confirmed). skillsllm.com, agentskillshub, the heooo AI navigation site, an oschina blog, and zhuyansen/awesome-claude-video-skills (a list with 1.6k stars covering 180 repos) all include it.
- The install method is itself distribution:
npx skills add openfilm/openfilminstalls it into your agent in one line, or you can download the desktop app from the website. No ads, and no evidence of a Product Hunt launch (the producthunt database has no record).
Why it could take off
- Timing: At the end of September, Opus 5.5 code-generated videos went viral, and "have Claude make videos" became a topic of mainstream curiosity. OpenFilm's repo was created in October, right as demand peaked.
- It picked the right audience on the right channel: Competitors mostly pitch developers on GitHub and X. OpenFilm's first shot landed on Xiaohongshu, aimed at Chinese creators and office workers who want to make videos without learning editing. The title "To stop editing videos, I built this" is a need-based hook, not a technical one. 25k saves and 46k Windows installer downloads both suggest the audience was mostly non-developers.
- It serves non-developers: The desktop version bundles ffmpeg and a headless browser, so there's no environment setup, and the Studio has a chat panel right there. If you're unhappy with the output, you can click text, drag layers, and trim the timeline like in CapCut, or box an area and have the agent change it. Competitors are mostly "skill packs + command line," which outsiders can't run, or can run but can't edit.
- Retention: 13 versions shipped in three weeks, and bugs get fixed quickly. Edits are saved to files, so the agent keeps them on its next pass (
overrides). It exports to Final Cut, Premiere, and DaVinci, giving users a way out into professional software. - The founder's persona: Tsinghua graduate, moved to Dali to work as an indie developer, and the videos he posts were made with OpenFilm itself. That's naturally compelling on Xiaohongshu.
What's the differentiation, and is it why it took off
- Technical differences: (1) an open format:
film.htmluses<section>as tracks, media clips with#t=12,18for in and out points, and CSS for positioning, plus a SPEC for anyone building players or renderers. (2) one function: each shot only needs to implementframe(t), with the rule that the same t must always produce the same frame. No React (Remotion), no framework conventions (HyperFrames). (3) a real editor: you can change elements inside AI-generated pages. (4)a lookcommand renders each frame twice out of order to check for consistency, specifically catching errors models often make. - Did it run because of this? Partly. What actually brought users in was the Xiaohongshu hit plus timing. What makes that traffic stick and spread is the hand-editable editor plus the one-click desktop installer, which skill packs can't match. The technical selling point of the "HTML + frame(t) format" did nothing in developer circles (1 points on HN) and was only a side note in the aggregator posts.
How visible it is right now
- Word of mouth spread in small circles: the Chinese AI and productivity community (one Xiaohongshu hit, a batch of Chinese X accounts, Bilibili) and English AI tool aggregator accounts (IntCyberDigest, socialwithaayan's list, AlphaSignal, Instagram Reels). It never hit the HN front page, had no Product Hunt launch, got no major media coverage, and has no publicly reported revenue (it's free and open source).
- Copycats: No large-scale direct clones have appeared yet, only a few small repos with similar names (guoboyue-commits/openfilm-mix "openfilm mashup station" and a few Codespaces deployment forks, each with 0 stars). But the category is already crowded (see competitor table), and lemo-opuscar has dozens of copy repos, which suggests that whoever gets hot in this slot will get copied.
What others can borrow
- The developer tool's first shot landed on Xiaohongshu / a non-developer platform, using the pain-point title "I built something so you never have to X again," with the video itself made using the product, proving on the spot that it works.
- "Agent generation + human hand-editing": users most fear AI-generated output they can't change. An editing layer like CapCut is the retention hook, and saving edits back to the source files lets the agent keep working from them.
- A ready-to-run Windows installer (with ffmpeg and Chromium bundled) lowers the setup barrier, which is what lets non-developer traffic actually stick.
- Riding a platform trend (Opus 5.5 code videos) requires speed: from repo creation to viral hit took only 6 days.
Still unclear
- Whether the 10-17/18 batch of Chinese X posts was organic spread or paid promotion or mutual boosting: no evidence, unverified.
- How many installer downloads are repeat downloads from auto-updates: unverified. The real number of active users is unknown.
- Going by the TikHub timestamp, the Xiaohongshu post went up at 10-10 (US Pacific). The repo_day figure of 10-12 for only 126 stars fits the theory that Xiaohongshu users don't click star, but there's no direct evidence.
- No commercialization plans (cloud rendering, paid templates, etc.) have been seen.
- Whether it can sustain itself after the slowdown through the skill ecosystem (skill-replicate, etc.) and the example library remains to be seen.
