# A digital blogger with 1.25M followers brought "AI removes ads from TVs" to domestic phones: 6,500 stars in 13 days

**What it is** An open-source tool that uses adb to automatically turn off system ads, hot search, news feeds, and marketing push toggles on domestic Android phones. No root needed, fully reversible, and it works with AI agents. There's also a Mac/Windows client you can use with a few clicks.

**Why it took off** The author is a digital blogger on Weibo with 1.25M followers. In the second week after CleanYourTV (AI removing ads from TVs) went viral, he applied the same trick to phones, which everyone has. Chinese GitHub recommendation accounts and financial media amplified it, and a signed client let ordinary fans actually use it.

**C** **How you could follow** Stop building phone ad removers and copy the structure instead: in the first week of the next "let AI do X for you" hit, port it to a device more people own as a local version, ship three entry points (an AI instruction doc, a chat prompt, and a signed client), and launch with your own account or a blogger partnership.

Grade C: the phone slot is already taken by it, and it took off because of its author's million-plus followers and a one-time hot window. Similar projects at the same time with no distribution stayed in single-digit stars. The approach is worth studying, but copying it directly isn't worth it. Circulating in small circles

On the afternoon of Oct 24, 2026, Weibo blogger 肉呆大魔王 posted a GitHub link to an open-source tool that turns off system ads on domestic Android phones. The repo had been created 14 minutes earlier. 13 days later it had 6,537 stars. That same week at least seven or eight projects with nearly identical ideas also appeared on GitHub, all in single-digit stars. This piece explains what it actually took off on, which parts of this playbook you can copy, and why the most crucial piece can't be copied.

### 14 minutes

The repo rddmwmddr/android-ad-cleaner was created on Oct 24 13:35 (Beijing time). On 13:49, @肉呆大魔王 posted on Weibo: "Made a fun project for everyone. Remove, turn off, and disable ads, push notifications and services on domestic phones... If you don't know how to use it, just download the client from the comments." He has 1.25M followers, is verified as a "Weibo VLOG blogger," and his bio says "contact for business." The post got 4,665 likes, 4,283 reposts, and 225 comments (Weibo backup site peachring.com).

The GitHub account was registered in 2013, with almost no public repos before this one. This was the first thing that caught fire. In other words, this wasn't a project a developer built up over time. It was a person with an audience putting something on GitHub.

The curve afterward (GitHub, daily stars):

| Date | Stars | Added that day |
|---|---|---|
| 10-25 | 129 | — |
| 10-26 | 638 | +509 |
| 10-27 | 1,748 | +1,110 |
| 10-28 | 3,750 | +2,002 |
| 10-29 | 4,367 | +617 |
| 11-01 | 5,352 | About +315/day |
| 11-06 | 6,537 | +237 |

It launched, got pushed to a peak within two or three days by big accounts reposting it, then settled into a long tail of two or three hundred stars a day. 11-06 has 592 forks and 163 open issues. It never made GitHub Trending, since the repo was too new to qualify, so all the stars came from off-platform traffic.

### What it is

A script that runs on a computer, connects to the phone via adb, and opens system settings and the manufacturer's built-in apps by model, flipping off the toggles buried three or four menus deep: personalized ads, ad tracking (OAID), the hot list in pulldown search, the negative-one-screen news feed, carousels and splash screens in the app store, and per-app "content and marketing" notification channels. The README includes a screenshot of the OPPO app store homepage with the caption "carousels, must-haves, must-plays, welfare tags, all promotional slots."

It states what it doesn't do as prominently as what it does: no root, no unlocking, no reflashing; no uninstalling or disabling system apps; ad components are only suspended with `pm suspend`, which requires the owner's confirmation and can be reverted with a single command; orders, deliveries, and update notifications are preserved.

There are four ways to use it: have an AI agent like Claude Code, Codex, or Trae read the repo's instructions and run it itself; paste a prompt into DeepSeek or Doubao and have it walk you through tapping on the phone step by step; follow the checklist manually; or download the desktop client directly. The Mac version is signed and passed Apple notarization, and Windows has both an installer and a portable version. "Plug in your phone and click a few buttons. No Python, no AI tools needed." It covers Xiaomi/Redmi, OPPO/OnePlus/realme, vivo/iQOO, Honor, Meizu, Huawei (HarmonyOS 4), and Samsung, with a device table of about 50 rows, many of them real-device tests submitted by users. The client has a button that files a GitHub Issue in one click with diagnostic info attached.

### The wind it rode on

A week earlier, another project, CleanYourTV, had already gone viral: hand the repo to Claude Code and have it use adb to uninstall preinstalled apps and swap the home screen on smart TVs. Created Oct 17, it had reached 27k stars by 24 (GitHub), and 11-06 was 52.6k stars. "Have AI use adb to clean your ads" was one of the hottest topics in Chinese tech circles that week.

android-ad-cleaner caught the wave in its second week and changed just one thing: the target, from TVs to phones. Every Chinese person has one, and everyone is annoyed by system ads every day. The method was also more conservative: CleanYourTV uninstalled and disabled, while this one only flips toggles.

### How the stars came in waves

- **The author's own Weibo** : the launch post got 4,665 likes and 4,283 reposts. He posted 10-27 new version and 11-05 0.3.x, each time saying "link in the comments," and every update was another round of exposure. He also has YouTube and Bilibili accounts and a personal site, ahuamiao.com, all with intro pages.

- **The Chinese-language X account for GitHub recommendations** : GitHubDaily posted on Oct 28 at 7:30 (Beijing time), and @jaywcjlove reposted it a few hours later, which is exactly the day it gained +2,002 in a single day.

- **Business media** : Farsight 10-28 published "AI helps users turn off ads, and Xiaomi's 'internet model' faces its big test," which Pengpai, Jiemian, ZAKER and Sina Finance all picked up, framing it with CleanYourTV as an "AI reverses everything" trend. Xiaomi's 76.5% internet services gross margin got pulled in for comparison, and the story spilled out of the tech circle. The other side showed up too: tech blogger 比格张Big 10-31 posted "Xiaomi's system ads can be turned off, but don't blame third-party ads," and the debate itself kept the heat going.

- **Reposts and reviews** : Bilibili has at least 4 videos titled things like "Amazing! GitHub's Android ad-removal tool" (one in the recommendations has 34k views), and the uploaders mostly direct people to cloud drives and WeChat Official Accounts. Also Zhihu columns, K50 hands-on reviews on 什么值得买, CSDN, and V2EX share posts.

- **Overseas** : Facebook, Instagram, and Threads have a few scattered reposts, and YouTube Shorts has one video, "Claude Code Turns Off the Ads Built Into Xiaomi Phones," but the volume is small.

No sign of paid acquisition, and none was needed.

### Why others with the same idea didn't take off

After CleanYourTV took off, a batch of "phone versions" appeared on GitHub: cleanyourphone (10-23, whose README says directly "inspired by CleanYourTV"), shouji-dasaochu (10-22), cleanyourdroid (10-24), android-phone-care (10-27), NoBS-Android (10-28), AI-Phone-Debloater, and Android-Phone-Ad-Cleaner (11-05). A few were created even earlier. All in single-digit stars.

There's also name-riding: an SEO site at androidadcleaner.com that claims to have an iOS version too, a "third-party one-click deployment" repo, and a cloud-drive package shared by a Bilibili repost account.

So the idea isn't worth much, and timing isn't exclusive either. What separates it from these projects is, first, that its author brings over a million followers, and second, the signed client. The blogger's fans are ordinary digital users, not developers, and there's a "download and it works" step that developers never needed. Developers give the stars, but ordinary people carry the spread. Traffic came in, and the client let it be used.

### Where it sits among the older tools

| Project | Scale | How it differs |
|---|---|---|
| CleanYourTV | 52.6K stars | The same approach, aimed at TVs, doing uninstalls and home-screen swaps |
| Universal Android Debloater / UAD-ng | 20k / 9.8k stars | Uninstalls and disables by package name, aimed at English-speaking geeks |
| Canta, Hail | 6.5k / 7.1k stars | Freezes and uninstalls apps on phones, doesn't touch the ad toggles buried in settings |
| GKD, 李跳跳 | GKD 44k stars | Skips splash ads and pop-ups, works at the UI layer |
| AdGuard and other DNS blockers | Big | Network layer; can't turn off system recommendation slots or push notifications |
| Assorted "how to turn off system ads" tutorials | Extremely many | It turned these tutorials into scripts that run automatically per device model |

(GitHub stars, 11-06)

It does occupy a layer nobody else had: the ad toggles in system settings and manufacturer apps, handled one by one for domestic brands and specific models. But that difference is why the traffic can be used, not why the traffic came in the first place.

### If it were you

**In one line: there's a fairly complete playbook to learn here, but building another phone ad remover to copy it isn't worth it. That slot is already taken, and it took off because of a million-plus followers you most likely don't have.**

- **Who it suits** : people who have an account with tens of thousands of followers or more (Weibo, Bilibili, Xiaohongshu, or X all work), plus the ability to write adb or desktop tools; or developers who can partner with bloggers like that.

- **Who it doesn't suit** : people with no distribution who want to rely on organic GitHub traffic to build stars. Seven or eight projects with the same idea in one week all ended up in single digits.

- **How to do it** : copy the structure, not the topic. Watch for repos about "let an AI agent do X for you" that just blew up overseas or in the domestic circle, and within a week build a local version aimed at a bigger, more widely owned device. After TVs came phones; after phones could come car systems, routers, TV boxes, tablets, or smartwatch preinstalls and pushes. The repo should have three entry points: an instruction doc for AI to read, a prompt for chat AIs, and a signed client for ordinary people. The README should state up front "what it doesn't do" and "how to revert," to dispel the worry "will it break my stuff?"

- **How to get users** : launch on your own account with the link in the comments, then post an update for each version. Pick a pain point that stirs up everyone's emotions and also conflicts with vendor interests, and media and critics will spread it for you. Accounts like GitHubDaily on Chinese X will find you on their own once you pass a thousand or two thousand stars.

- **When to act** : This kind of "riding a hot trend" project has a short window. It was posted on day 7 after CleanYourTV blew up; once the wave is past its third week, almost nobody looks anymore. The next window opens in the first week of the next viral "AI reverse-engineers X" hit.

- **What would show we got it wrong** : If it hasn't passed 200 stars three days after launch and no repost accounts pick it up on their own, that means it lacks the cold-start push, and no topic will save it. Also, if vendors start changing settings pages or blocking the adb route (whether this project can be maintained long-term is still unknown), the case for this type of tool gets weaker.

## Why rddmwmddr/android-ad-cleaner (Android ad removal) took off

> Research date 2026-11-06. Data: our GitHub database (repo_day), data cards, GitHub API, Jina/Exa web search.

### Bottom line

A digital blogger with **1.25M Weibo followers, "Rou Dai Da Mo Wang"** , rode the **CleanYourTV wave ("let an AI agent remove ads from TVs via adb"; over 40k stars in 10 days)** in its second week, applying the same approach to the universal pain point of ads in domestic Android phone systems. He also launched it himself on Weibo and shipped a Mac/Windows client usable without AI. The repo's stars come from the blogger's own traffic, secondary reposts by Chinese tech accounts, and a layer of AI-hype; they did not grow organically on GitHub.

### What it is

- From a computer, it uses adb + uiautomator2 to open system settings and vendor apps via per-model scripts, then turns off personalized ads, OAID, hot search, the left-screen info feed, store promotion slots, and marketing notifications by channel, and uses `pm suspend` to freeze ad components (with the owner's consent). No root, no uninstalling, no disabling; everything is reversible.

- Four ways to use it: an AI agent (Claude Code / Codex / WorkBuddy / Trae reading AGENTS.md to run it), a chat AI guiding manual taps (DeepSeek / Doubao), a manual checklist, and **a signed and notarized Mac client and a Windows client** .

- Covers Xiaomi/Redmi, OPPO/OnePlus/realme, vivo/iQOO, Honor, Meizu, Huawei (HarmonyOS 4), and Samsung; the model table has about 50 rows, many from community-submitted real-device tests.

- Created 2026-10-24 05:35 UTC; MIT license; the author's GitHub account was registered 2013 years ago with very few public repos, and this is the first one to take off.

### Growth data

| Date | stars | Daily adds |
|---|---|---|
| 10-25 | 129 | — |
| 10-26 | 638 | +509 |
| 10-27 | 1,748 | +1,110 |
| 10-28 | 3,750 | **+2,002 (peak)** |
| 10-29 | 4,367 | +617 |
| 10-31 | 5,037 | ~+330/day |
| 11-06 | 6,537 | +237 |

(Source: data card / github repo_day; live GitHub API values 11-06 6,690 stars, 601 forks, 194 open issues.) The curve is: launch, then a big-account repost two or three days later pushes it to a peak, followed by a long tail of two or three hundred stars a day. trending_days_any=0, because Trending only picks up repos around 60 days old, so GitHub Trending was not its source.

### Growth tactics (where users come from)

1. **The author's own Weibo launch (confirmed)** : 2026-10-24 13:49 (Beijing time), 14 minutes after the repo was created, @Rou Dai Da Mo Wang (1.25M Weibo followers, verified as a "Weibo VLOG blogger," bio says "contact for business cooperation") posted "Made a fun project for everyone: remove, turn off, and disable ads, push notifications, and services on Chinese phones… if you don't know how to use it, just download the client in the comments," with **4665 likes, 4283 reposts, 225 comments** (backed up at peachring.com). 10-27 he posted a new version and 11-05 posted 0.3.1, both in the "link in the comments" style (sina.cn/news/detail/5358725981803033.html, sina.cn/media/1527347404). He also has a YouTube channel @ahuamiao, a Bilibili space 6738451, and an intro page at ahuamiao.com.

2. **Chinese GitHub recommendation account on X (confirmed)** : GitHubDaily posted on 10-27 23:30 UTC (x.com/GitHub_Daily/status/2115224543044509827), and @jaywcjlove reposted at 10-28 06:45 UTC (x.com/jaywcjlove/status/2115334233418059944); @chuanliang also reposted. The timing lines up with the +10-28 peak on 2002.

3. **Bilibili / Zhihu / smzdm / CSDN reposts (confirmed)** : at least 4 Bilibili videos titled like "Github Android ad-removal tool is blowing up" (BV1LkxE6mESK with 5697 views; a Qingli student's video with 34k views in the recommendation feed). Uploaders mostly funnel viewers to Quark cloud drive and WeChat Official Accounts. Zhihu columns and smzdm have several hands-on tests (K50 test, "5000+ stars in a week"), plus ai-bot.cn, CSDN, 3se.cc ("2 days, 1190 stars"), and V2EX share posts.

4. **Media coverage (confirmed)** : Farsight (识礁) published "AI helps users turn off ads; Xiaomi's 'internet model' faces its exam" on 10-28. The Paper, Jiemian, ZAKER, and Sina Finance all reposted it, framing it alongside CleanYourTV as an "AI reverse-engineers everything" trend. Opposing views also appeared, e.g. tech blogger "Bige Zhang Big" posted "Xiaomi's system ads can be turned off; don't blame third-party tools" on 10-31, and the controversy added more heat.

5. **Overseas reposts (confirmed, small volume)** : Facebook GitHunt, Instagram, Threads, YouTube Shorts ("Claude Code Turns Off the Ads Built Into Xiaomi Phones"), explainx.ai.

6. No evidence of paid acquisition; none needed, and that's not how open-source tools grow.

### Competitors

| Name | Where | Launched | Scale | How it differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CleanYourTV(Gathin23/cleanyourtv) | Open source | 2026-10-17 | 52,550 stars (11-06, GitHub repo) | Same approach (hand the prompt / repo to Claude Code and clean via adb), but for TVs, and it uninstalls / disables components and swaps the launcher. android-ad-cleaner is its domestic-phone version. |
| Universal Android Debloater (0x192 original / UAD-ng) | Open source | 2021 / 2023 | 20k / 9.8k stars | Uninstalls and disables by package-name list, leaning toward English power users; it only flips switches and does not uninstall. |
| Canta, Hail | Open-source app (Shizuku) | 2023 / 2021 | 6.5k / 7.1k stars | Freezes and uninstalls apps on the phone; does not handle ad toggles buried deep in system settings or marketing notification channels. |
| GKD / 李跳跳 | Open-source / domestic app (accessibility) | From ¥2023 | GKD 44k stars | Blocks app splash ads and pop-ups (UI layer); it turns off system-level ad switches. |
| AdGuard and other DNS / VPN blockers | App | Years | Big | Network-layer blocking; can't turn off system push notifications or recommendation slots. |
| Vendors' built-in toggles / various "how to turn off system ads" guides | Big-company features / web | Years | huge | Switches are buried in three or four menu levels and differ by brand; it packages these guides into scripts that run automatically per model. |
| Xiaomi ADB/Fastboot Tools, etc. | Open source | Early on | Small / outdated | Single brand, old tooling |

### Copycats (plenty, but none gained traction)

After CleanYourTV took off, and before and after this one launched, a batch of similar projects appeared on GitHub: 1099438829/cleanyourphone (10-23, explicitly "inspired by CleanYourTV"), kongtai123/shouji-dasaochu (10-22), Shibakaa/cleanyourdroid (10-24), finalbsd/android-phone-care (10-27), dengjzy/NoBS-Android (10-28), Rovoxia/AI-Phone-Debloater, william-oy/Android-Phone-Ad-Cleaner (11-05), TrustDec/tv-debloat, and others, **all in single-digit stars** . Some just borrow its name: miounet11/androidadcleaner (androidadcleaner.com is an SEO site riding the name and claims an iOS version too), JUTZUGC/android-ad-cleaner-deploy-guide (a "third-party one-click deployment"), Ezra-Zhao's Spanish / Portuguese quick guides, plus cloud-drive packages posted by Bilibili reposters. Same idea, same time; only the one with distribution took off. Distribution, not the idea, decided the outcome.

### Why it's working

1. **Built-in big-account distribution** : the author is a digital blogger with 1.25M followers; his Weibo launch got 4665 likes and 4283 reposts. Over a dozen similar repos launched without distribution and stayed in single-digit stars.

2. **Timing** : CleanYourTV started blowing up on 10-17, and by 10-24 it had 27k stars, when the concept of "let AI use adb to remove ads" was hot. This one rode the second week of the wave and switched the target to domestic phones, which every Chinese user carries. Media also covered the two together.

3. **Big pain point, right stance** : system ads on domestic phones are a nationwide complaint, and vendor earnings give it a backdrop (Xiaomi's internet services gross margin is 76.5%). The topic carries emotion and controversy by default, so it could break out into financial media.

4. **Usable by ordinary people** : a signed and notarized Mac client and Windows client; "plug in the phone and click a few times," with no AI or Python knowledge needed. The blogger's followers are ordinary digital users, not developers, which matters a lot.

5. **Safety and reversibility as the selling point** : no uninstalling, no disabling, no root, just flipping switches, which eases fears of "bricking the phone." Zhihu and smzdm articles all lead with this.

6. **Community fills in the models** : 194 open issues, lots of community-submitted real-device tests, and an in-app one-click diagnostic that files an Issue. The wider the model coverage, the more people can use it, and the longer the tail.

### Differentiation

Compared with UAD / Canta / GKD, it handles the **ad, recommendation, and marketing notification toggles inside system settings and vendor apps** , with per-model real-device scripts for domestic brands. Compared with CleanYourTV, it moves to a bigger device category (phones), uses more conservative methods, and adds a desktop client. The differentiation is real, but **it isn't the main reason it took off** : several nearly identical repos launched the same week and went nowhere. The main drivers were the author's Weibo traffic plus the hype CleanYourTV brought; the desktop client and the "safe, reversible" positioning made sure that traffic was actually usable and worth sharing.

### What others can borrow

- "Viral overseas AI-agent repo → localized Chinese version within a week": swap in a bigger device or scenario (TV → phone) and launch on domestic platforms.

- The repo has three entry points: AGENTS.md for AI to read, prompts for chat AIs, and a signed client for ordinary people. Stars come from developers, but spread comes from ordinary people.

- Publish from your own account first, drop the link in the comments, then keep posting update after update. Each update is another round of exposure.

- Pick a pain point that the public is emotional about and where vendors have a conflict of interest. Media will write about it.

### Unknowns

- Actual client download count: release download numbers were not obtained (GitHub API rate-limited), unverified.

- Total spread on Bilibili / Xiaohongshu / Douyin was not tracked; Xiaohongshu and Douyin were not checked.

- Whether the author promoted it elsewhere after the Weibo launch (WeChat Official Account, videos) is not fully verified.

- Unknown whether vendors will change their settings pages or block the adb path, and whether it can be maintained long-term.
