Someone else's viral video, their own repo: how "mod any game" took 9,000 stars on the hottest day of the wave

What it is An open-source skill pack that lets coding agents like Claude Code, Codex, and Cursor mod almost any PC game, from identifying the engine and reading code to generating art and sound with AI, testing in-game, and cutting videos, plus a knowledge base where agents leave notes for each other.

Why it blew up On the day AI game-mashup videos flooded every feed and everyone was asking how they were made, it was the first to pitch "any game is moddable, just install it." Its launch tweet borrowed the hottest clip of the wave and got 3.8M views, and the generic name led tutorial sites and creators to treat it as the name for the whole wave.

CHow you could follow it Don't build another generic game-mod tool. Copy the method: watch for the next "AI work is everywhere, everyone's asking how" moment, and within a day or two ship a repo with a big name that works with every agent and has a "write a note, open a PR" knowledge base, launched with a demo you made yourself.

Grade C: the launch method and the knowledge-base flywheel are worth learning, but the space is already crowded. The wave has peaked, copycats are piling up, tutorial ecosystems and contributors have gone to it, and the platform layer has YC company Melty. Its growth came from a one-off wave timing and the author's fal asset access, which followers don't get. Publicly discussed / widely covered

On Sep 29 2026, Tobyn Jacobs used AI to cram all of Minecraft into Elden Ring, and it hit X's trending list. The next morning, a fal engineer tweeted "Every game is moddable now!" with a link to a repo called universal-modder. 37 days later it had 9,443 stars and 1,054 forks. The idea wasn't new. A project with the same name and approach had appeared 4 weeks earlier and had only 5 stars. The difference was timing, launch tactics, and a big-enough name. Below is how it was done, which steps are worth copying, and why following it now isn't worth much.

The hottest day of the wave

The 'AI game mashup' wave kicked off in mid-September: 9-19 someone reverse-engineered and rewrote Skate in Rust with Codex 3; 9-27 someone played skateboarding in MW2; 9-29 was Minecraft in Elden Ring; 9-30 then Tarkov went into Skyrim and Mario Kart into WaW zombie mode; 10-02 Spider-Man got into Gotham. The r/singularity post title was "Someone used Opus 5.5 to port all of Minecraft into Elden Ring." Under every one of them is the same question: how did they do it, and can I?

The author, Rehan Sheikh (@rehan_shei), created the repo on Sep 30 05:00 and tweeted on 05:03, writing "Packed everything I learned modding Terraria and Age of Empires with Claude into universal-modder," and tagging @fal. The tweet got 3.8M views. The repo and tweet went up three minutes apart, so this was a prepared launch, not something written and posted on a whim.

But the video in the tweet was a problem. X's Community Notes flagged it: most of the footage was other people's work, including Tobyn Jacobs' Minecraft-in-Elden-Ring and another creator's live Pokémon Emerald battle. Only the ending clips of Terraria and Age of Empires were made by this repo. In other words, it used the hottest footage of the whole wave to advertise a 'universal tool'. The effect was strong, but the cost was a Community Note attached to it.

What it is

A mod-making toolkit for coding agents: 12 skills covering everything from scouting a game and identifying its engine, reading real code, generating art, 3D models, and sound with fal, to testing in-game, cutting showcase videos, and publishing. It also includes a um CLI and fal's MCP. Each of Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI, Copilot, Cursor, and OpenCode has a one-line install command, and it also works with npx skills add. Safety rules are built in: back up saves first, don't touch online anti-cheat, don't distribute game files.

The most interesting design is a knowledge base where agents write for other agents. After each mod, the agent writes up the pitfalls it hit as a note and submits it to the repo with um kb pr. The next agent checks it before starting. By 11-06 there were 265 notes, ranging from a new civilization in Age of Empires 2 and troubleshooting Baldur's Gate 3 stuck in Chapter 2, to "Five Nights at Balatro's" (turning the Five Nights at Freddy's format into a Balatro deck). The agents writing the notes include Claude Code and OpenCode running DeepSeek.

The repo includes three working examples: a weapon pack for Terraria, a new civilization for Age of Empires 2, and running Minecraft inside GTA V.

Sources: GitHub daily star counts and archived web pages. The first 9 days added about 5,400 stars. The true single-day peak most likely fell around 10-01, and there are no day-by-day figures for those days. In mid-October it was still adding around three hundred a day, then declined steadily. The last 7 days added +252, and the prior 7 days added +488. It has passed its peak.

Beyond that tweet, three other forces drove growth:

  • Its own examples became a second wave of material. The GTA V example, running Minecraft (two games open at once, exchanging camera and events over WebSocket), was reposted to r/GTAV as "Somebody modded Minecraft Into GTA 5", appeared in several Instagram reels, and a Medium 10-15 piece titled "How AI put Minecraft into GTA V in two days" linked straight to the repo's note. The roughly three hundred stars a day from 10-09 to 10-16 line up in time with this, though that's an inference.
  • SEO sites and tutorial accounts wrote about it for them. Within a week of launch, a wave of AI-written tutorial pages appeared: a HuggingFace blog post (10-03), mindstudio (10-07), a VGTimes guide. Someone even registered universal-modder.dev to host a "139-game compatibility table." YouTube filled with "Universal Modder Tutorial" videos, and TikTok and Instagram had lead-gen accounts offering tutorials in exchange for "comment MOD." None of this was made by the author. Others were riding the keyword, but it brought long-tail traffic.
  • Reddit. r/ClaudeAI had a post on launch day. Vote counts weren't captured.

It was never on Hacker News and never reached GitHub's trending page.

Why this one and not the one from four weeks earlier

doritoman90000/universal-game-modder launched on Sep 2, with the same pitch of "one MCP mod any game," and has 5 stars today. The functionality isn't that different. The gap comes down to:

  • Timing. Four weeks earlier, nobody was asking "how do I make this." It appeared on the day everyone was asking.
  • A big name. Most comparable tools at the time were "one tool per game": a Slay the Spire 2 MCP with 537 stars, and one each for RimWorld, DayZ, and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2. "Universal" and "mod any game" made anyone who saw a mashup video think "that's the tool," and tutorial sites wrote it up as the name for the whole wave.
  • The thing actually works. It has runnable examples, per-engine playbooks, and um scan to identify engines automatically. Many of the 265 notes were contributed externally. Its fork rate is 11%, on par with the median for new projects of similar size. Beyond the author's 40 commits, there are 20+ external contributors. That suggests visitors weren't just watching.
  • The author had resources. He spent a year as an engineer at fal, a company offering APIs for image generation, 3D generation, and audio generation. Its asset pipeline is unique among comparable tools, and the showcase videos are far more polished. The repo defaults to fal, so the stars quietly turned into fal API usage. He left fal in October to start his own company, patch.

There's already a string of copycats. Fixed-Seed/game-changer's description is nearly word for word the same. Someone made a fork with the safety guardrails removed and promoted it on Reddit. There are a few versions for Google Antigravity, Codex, a desktop workbench, and straight mirrors. And the hottest mods in the wave were originally made by using Opus 5.5 or Codex directly. You can do it without installing this.

If it were you

In short: the space is already crowded. Another "universal game mod toolkit" will struggle to win thousands of stars. What's worth learning is its launch method and knowledge-base design, applied to the next wave nobody has claimed yet.

Who it's for: developers who watch what's catching on in AI work on X and can ship a solid repo within a day or two, and who have experience in some creative field (video editing, 3D printing, hardware, reverse-engineering apps, tabletop games) and can make an impressive demo.

Who it's not for: anyone who wants to head-on build a "universal version" of game modding. The name, the tutorial ecosystem, and 20+ contributors have all gone to the original, and the platform layer has YC company Melty. It's also not for people who prefer to refine slowly. This kind of play has a window measured in days.

How to do it:

  1. Watch for the moment when a certain kind of AI work floods the feed and the comments are all asking how it was done. The demand isn't something you create. The wave provides it.
  2. Within the one or two hottest days of the wave, launch a skill pack that lets your agent do the thing right after install, and give it a big name ("any X can Y"). Speed of launch matters more than completeness, but you need at least two or three examples that run and look good on camera.
  3. One repo that works with every agent: the Agent Skills format plus each platform's MCP config file, and get listed on the skills directories along the way.
  4. Copy its knowledge-base flywheel: after an agent finishes a job, it writes the lessons as a note and opens a PR, and the next agent checks it first. This is what makes others want to contribute and keeps people coming back to the repo after the peak.
  5. If you insist on staying in games, do what it hasn't done well: its notes are mostly PC single-player games, and console emulators, mobile games, and multiplayer mods are barely covered. Or go deep on one major engine (Unreal, Unity).

How to get users: Launch with a tweet that uses your own best-looking footage, not stitched-together work from others. It got a Community Note for doing that, and for someone with a smaller name, one note would be enough to wreck their credibility. Turn each example in the repo into a short video that can spread on its own, so they can each get a second wave on the Reddit subreddit for the game and on Instagram.

When it's too early: The game-mashup wave has already peaked (daily additions have dropped from over three hundred to twenty or thirty), so entering the game space now is late. The method itself has no deadline, but each wave's window is only a day to a week.

Signs you've misread it: You caught a viral moment, shipped the package right away, and the tweet got hundreds of thousands of views, yet the repo only gained a few hundred stars and nobody opened notes. That means the work relied too heavily on the author's personal craft. People wanted to watch but not to build, and the toolkit found no use.

One line

A toolkit for coding agents (Claude Code / Codex / Gemini CLI / Cursor, etc.) that lets them mod any PC game: 12 skills (recon, reverse engineering, fal-generated art/3D/audio, in-game testing, demo video editing, publishing), the um CLI, the fal MCP, plus a knowledge base of field notes written by agents for agents (each finished mod can open a PR).

Conclusion: it launched on the hottest day of the viral "AI game mashup" wave (9-29 Minecraft in Elden Ring flooding feeds, 9-30 it went live). It was the first "universal" tool of its kind, from a fal engineer, and its launch tweet got 3.8M views, most of it made of other people's viral mashup mods (flagged by X Community Notes). The wave supplied the demand; the "mod any game" naming and timing funneled the whole wave's attention to one repo. The repo itself is solid (real examples, knowledge base, multi-agent install, safety rules), which is what sustains the 11% fork rate and community contributions.

2. Where users come from (growth tactics)

  1. X launch tweet (confirmed, main engine): author Rehan Sheikh (@rehan_shei) posted at 2026-09-30 05:03 UTC: "Every game is moddable now! I packaged everything Claude learned modding Terraria and Age of Empires into universal-modder…", tagging @fal, 3.8M views. The repo was created 05:00:35, and the tweet went out 05:03. Repo and tweet launched together, a prepared release. Source: x.com/rehan_shei/status/2105161487509852622
    • Key detail: the tweet's video is stitched from other people's viral clips. X Community Notes point out that the video shows unrelated mods by other authors (e.g. @TobynJacobs' Minecraft-in-Elden-Ring, @germanburgardt's live Pokémon Emerald battle); only the final Terraria/AoE segment is this repo's example. In other words, it borrowed the most popular visuals of the whole wave to advertise a "universal tool". That's a piggyback-on-the-hype tactic, very effective, at the cost of a Community Note.
  2. Platform/culture event (confirmed, the demand source): the "AI game mashup" wave. Know Your Meme counts 9-19 Chasm's Skate 3 (a Rust rewrite, reverse-engineered from Codex) as the earliest hit. 9-27 skateboarding in MW2. 9-29 Tobyn Jacobs put Minecraft inside Elden Ring (it trended on X as "Modder Embeds Full Minecraft Inside Elden Ring"). 9-30 Tarkov going into Skyrim, Mario Kart going into WaW zombies. 10-02 Spider-Man going into Gotham… (a timeline compiled by toolscout.ai, citing Decrypt and VideoCardz). r/singularity: "Someone using Opus 5.5 ports the entire game of Minecraft into Elden Ring." Everyone was asking "how was this made, and can I make one?" and universal-modder answered "install it and let your agent do it" just as 9-30 arrived. The README itself says "engine playbooks also draw on the September 2026 wave of AI-built mods."
  3. Second wave: the repo's own GTA V × Minecraft example (confirmed): the example examples/minecraft-gta5-passthrough (both games running at once, WebSocket exchange of camera and events, depth compositing) became viral material itself: r/GTAV "Somebody modded Minecraft Into GTA 5", multiple Instagram reels, and a Medium piece, "How AI Got Minecraft Inside GTA V in Two Days" (10-15), which links directly to the repo's knowledge-base note. 10-09~10-16 it gained roughly 300 stars per day, timing that matches this wave and the SEO content below (causation not verified day by day).
  4. Reddit (existence confirmed, data not retrieved): r/ClaudeAI "New open-source project tries to let Claude Code mod almost any PC game…" (launch day), and r/ClaudeAI "The New Wave of AI Game Mashups And Some Questions I Have". Reddit pages blocked our access (403); upvote counts unverified.
  5. Third-party SEO / content farms / YouTube (confirmed, passive amplification): within a week of launch, a flood of AI-written tutorial pages appeared: HuggingFace blog (a2aprotocol, 10-03), a2aprotocol.ai (10-04), aiidelist (10-05), seailife (10-05), mindstudio (10-07), aifreeapi (10-08), blog.laozhang.ai, hermes-ai.net, VGTimes guide, madisonavemag (10-19), a Miraheze wiki, the third-party site universal-modder.dev (a "139 games" compatibility table plus "vs competitors" pages), and hydemei/universal-modder-guide on GitHub. YouTube has a batch of "Universal Modder Tutorial" videos (e.g. @gittubeapp at 7.9K views) and a #universalmodder hashtag; TikTok/Instagram has "comment MOD for a free tutorial" bait accounts. The author didn't make these. Site owners and tutorial accounts piggybacked on the keyword, but they brought the project long-term search traffic.
  6. Community and retention hooks (confirmed): Discord, a "made with universal-modder" badge, the knowledge-base PR mechanism (um kb pr), and the announced mod community universalmodder.com. Beyond the author's 40 commits, the contributors list shows 20 more external contributors (Selene0623 with 22 commits, Davidoff-byte with 10 commits, …; GitHub contributors API).
  7. Backing resources: the author's LinkedIn lists "Engineer fal Sep 2025 – Oct 2026" and now "CEO @ patch" (his recent tweets promote patch-gg/pixelfx). He says he joined after fal acquired his first company (https://x.com/rehan_shei/status/2109650542972817645). The repo uses fal as its default asset backend (fal MCP, um fal, um fal price), and also wires in the paid services Sprixen and Voidless. Whether fal's official account reposted, and whether Sprixen/Voidless sponsor the project: unverified. Ads: none found (GitHub projects typically don't run paid ads).

4. Copycats and followers

  • Fixed-Seed/game-changer (10-05,10 stars): the description nearly copies "skills, the fsgc CLI, a FixedSeed MCP server and a shared knowledge base so any coding agent can mod almost any PC game you own".
  • AhmedTahaAtiya/universal-modder-unrestricted (10-07,25 stars): a fork with the safety guardrails removed, promoted in r/AI_Agents.
  • kilobyt1/universal-modder-antigravity (9-30 on the same day, a port to Google Antigravity), moderatorowich-ctrl/codex-universal-modder (10-01), AkaJDJ/universal-modder-studio (10-09, a desktop workbench), yizhang-create/awesome-universal-modder-games, and several repos that mirror the original as-is.
  • Third-party sites universal-modder.dev and a cluster of SEO tutorial sites are feeding off its keyword traffic.
  • Melty counts as a parallel competitor rather than a copy, but it has already claimed the "mod community / one-click play" layer.

5. How many people have seen it

Widely discussed: the launch tweet got 3.8M views and was flagged by Community Notes. VGTimes, Medium, madisonavemag, and toolscout wrote about it. HuggingFace blogs, YouTube, and TikTok/Instagram tutorial accounts followed in large numbers. GitHub already has repos copying its description and a guardrail-free fork. The open-source project has no revenue. This space ("agents modding games") is already crowded, and YC company Melty is building the platform layer.

6. Why it charted

  1. Timing was nearly perfect: Minecraft-in-Elden-Ring 9-29 hit X trending, and it launched 9-30 days later. It was the first general tool in the whole wave to promise "any game can be modded, just install it". The same-named project universal-game-modder, which appeared 4 weeks earlier, had only 5 stars.
  2. The launch used the best visuals from the wave: most of the video in the 3.8M-view tweet were other people's viral clips (Community Notes flagged this). It rode the whole wave's heat and redirected the "I want to do this too" attention to its own repo.
  3. The name and positioning were "universal", not "a specific game": "universal" and "mod any game" made everyone who saw any stitched-together video feel this was "that tool". Downstream SEO sites and tutorial accounts treated it as the wave's name.
  4. The thing is real: three runnable examples (a Terraria weapon pack, a new AoE2 civilization, Minecraft running inside GTA V), 11 engine playbooks, um scan auto-detects the engine, and the knowledge base includes community-contributed notes on Portal 2, Halo 3, and Elden Ring. A 11% fork rate (the median for new repos with ≥5000 stars is about 11%, so this is on the high end of normal) and 20 external contributors show it isn't just spectators.
  5. Works wherever you install it: one repo fits Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI, Copilot, Cursor, OpenCode, and npx skills. That reaches users in every agent ecosystem and every plugin/skill leaderboard (skillsllm and skillleaderboard both list it).
  6. The author has resources: a fal engineer who has spent years building generative media demos (nvidia-kimodo, open-annie, animated-asset-skill, etc.). The asset pipeline (fal image gen / 3D / audio) is unique in this space, and the visual showcase is also better.

7. Differentiation

  • Compared with single-game MCPs: "any game" plus engine detection plus engine playbooks.
  • Compared with guides: it's executable (CLI + skills + MCP), covers the whole flow from recon to a cut showcase video, and has safety guardrails (backing up saves, not touching online anti-cheat, not distributing game files).
  • Compared with running Claude/Codex bare: it builds a knowledge base of field notes. An agent finishes a job and opens a PR, and the next agent checks there first. This is its most structurally valuable design and a candidate for a long-term moat.
  • Compared with Melty: it's a toolchain for making mods. Melty is a platform for playing them.
  • Why it ran: partly. The decisive factors were timing, the launch approach (riding the wave's visuals), and the universal naming. The differentiation (fal asset pipeline, knowledge base, support for every agent) is what turned the attention into forks, contributions, and a tutorial ecosystem after the rush, rather than a single spike. Functionally, rivals can copy it without much effort (Fixed-Seed already has). The moat is the accumulated knowledge base and name recognition.

8. What others can learn

  • Chase a viral wave with a 'universal tool' version: when a category of AI work (here, game mashups) is flooding X and everyone is asking "how do I do this?", be the first to release a general skill pack that works once installed, and capture the wave's attention. Shipping fast matters more than shipping complete.
  • Use your strongest visuals in the launch tweet (but don't stitch together other people's work like it did. That draws Community Notes and risks credibility).
  • One repo that fits every agent (Agent Skills format plus each vendor's MCP config files), so it lands on every plugin and skill leaderboard.
  • "Agent-written knowledge base + auto-PR when done": turn what users learn while using it into repo assets, and it can carry over to other creative workflows (video editing, 3D, hardware, reverse-engineering apps...).
  • An open-source demo built by an employee of a company with an asset API: the fal model, where open-source tools default to the company's paid API so stars become API usage.

9. Uncertain

  • Day-by-day star curve from 9-30 to 10-09 (GitHub API rate-limited that day, so stargazer timestamps couldn't be pulled).
  • Whether the official fal account or Anthropic staff retweeted it, and whether Sprixen / Voidless were paid partners.
  • Upvotes on the Reddit post (403).
  • How many people actually made mods (the number of knowledge base notes wasn't counted). Author October left fal to work on the patch. Whether the repo is maintained and whether universalmodder.com launches are unknown.
  • How much traffic from the GTA×Minecraft spread on Instagram/Reddit came back to the repo can't be matched day by day.
