Zelda became an app on the iPhone home screen: nxnative gained 24 stars in 12,000 days by turning someone else's trick into a general tool

What it is An open-source script set that turns your own Switch game files into native apps you can sideload to iPhone or iPad, or open directly on Mac. Game code runs directly on Apple silicon; it is not an emulator.

Why it took off Many single-game ports appeared the same month, but only this one became a general framework (now 141 games). Add the instantly understandable picture of "Zelda as an iPhone app", plus the AI porting wave and the Switch 2 jailbreak, and X tech accounts, tech media and TikTok amplified it in relay.

CHow you could follow it Don't build the core again and don't build another shell (8 already exist); build companion tools like a compatibility list, a complete pitfalls guide, or Windows/Linux packaging, or take the playbook: find a narrow breakthrough, credit the originals clearly, generalize it into a general tool, and pair it with a counterintuitive positioning line and a screenshot-friendly showcase wall.

Grade C: the playbook is worth learning, but the core demands deep low-level skills, it rode a one-off jailbreak and porting wave, 141 derivative repos already exist, the shell niche is crowded, and it could face a Nintendo DMCA at any time, so chasing stars now isn't worth it. nxnative lets you package your own exported Switch games into native apps for iPhone, iPad or Mac with a single command. It is not an emulator; the game's own code runs directly on Apple silicon. It didn't invent this approach. It took one-off ports made for a single game and turned them into a tool that works for hundreds of games, then rode the AI game-porting wave of October. Below: how it took off, why the original author has only half its stars, how the 141 repos built on it are doing, and what you can take from it.

A tweet with copyright-blocked media

2026, Oct 25, midday (UTC 12:39): on X, the tech account Techjunkie Aman posted: "Nintendo Switch games can now run natively on iPhone and iPad." Below was a list: not an emulator, graphics rebuilt on Metal, 60 frames supported, touch and controller both work, saves, haptics, motion controls. Four images attached.

As of 11-06, the post had 187k views, 2,500 likes and 1,700 bookmarks. The images no longer load; X shows "This media has been disabled in response to a report by the copyright owner".

The next day, TechSpot's coverage opened like this: "Tears of the Kingdom can now live on your iPhone home screen as a standalone app, complete with an icon." The article noted that the tool "began attracting attention only after Techjunkie Aman's X post that weekend".

The warehouse had been up for 12 days by then. 10-17 It still had only 7 stars.

What it actually does

The Switch and iPhone/Mac both use ARM chips, so the game's instructions can already run on Apple silicon. The hardest part of an emulator (translating CPU instructions, and on iOS needing JIT, which Apple doesn't give) isn't needed here. nxnative only swaps out Nintendo-specific parts: a small host program stands in for Switch system services, and Nintendo's graphics API NVN is translated to Apple's Metal.

For users it's three steps: put your game files (NSP) and the prod.keys exported from your own console into a folder, run a Python script to get an IPA, and sideload it to your phone with AltStore or Sideloadly. One flag builds a Mac version. The README's first line is "Play your own Nintendo Switch games natively on iPhone and iPad", the second paragraph is "It is not an emulator", followed by a statement that the repo contains nothing from any game and is unaffiliated with Nintendo.

The results were shareable: Mac game YouTuber Andrew Tsai ran Monster Hunter Rise at a locked 8 fps on an M1 MacBook Air with 60GB RAM (cited by TechSpot); Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom went from 30 fps to 60 fps after specific updates, running smoother than the console itself.

The barrier is real too: it needs macOS 26.6, a specific Xcode version, Homebrew, and arm64 Python; the first build takes 30–60 minutes; the phone has to be iPhone 15 Pro or newer. Far more people starred it than actually built it (inference).

(GitHub daily stars, 11-06; the GitHub page live that day showed about 12,800 stars and 2,170 forks.)

A few numbers are worth a look. Forks are about 17% of stars; new repos of the same age and size usually sit around 11%, which suggests lots of people are actually cloning, building and modifying it. About 24 commits a day over 1,100 days, forty to fifty a day. Over the last 7 days it gained 2,912 stars; the 7 days before that it gained 8,283, so it's already cooling off.

The short videos are organic and multilingual. A Spanish-language dev creator, midudev, got 106k views on a clip that opens with "Esto no le va a gustar nada a Nintendo" (Nintendo is definitely not going to like this); jorgeizquierdo.tech in Spanish got 129k; English creator quickfinesse got 55k, with a caption saying "nxnative is free and open source, and already lists 80 games"; another English video got 586k views on TikTok (the view count reads 11-06). There are Portuguese and Turkish ones too. No paid promotion spotted. Hacker News had only one post at 1 points, and it wasn't the source.

A small detail shows how fast it's been updating: TechSpot 10-26 wrote "over 60 tested games", quickfinesse 10-27 said 80 games, an early-November video said over 100, and now the README's poster wall shows 141 games, about ten of them Switch 2 titles (playable on Mac, iPhone not yet tested). Every few days there's a new milestone that can be turned into a video.

The original creator has half its stars

nxnative's acknowledgments put it bluntly: running native this way was invented by d2r-mobile, a project that only does one game, Diablo 2. "nxnative started by copying its generic parts: the NSO rewriter, the host that replaces the Horizon system, the NVN-on-Metal layer and the iOS shell. Fixes flow both ways."

In the same month, a whole crop of similar projects appeared, each doing just one game:

ProjectLaunchedStars (approx.)What the others do
d2r-mobile10-125,100Original method author, Diablo 2 only
MacNativeGames10-177,100Only the two Zelda titles, aimed at Mac

nxnative10-1312,400General-purpose, 141 games, iPhone / iPad / Mac

The difference is one thing: the others port one game, while it does "any game you own". XDA 11-03 put it as turning "a technique that used to be applied to a single game" into "a broader framework". For people watching, "Zelda runs" is a news item; "all your Switch games can become iPhone apps" is something they want to try themselves.

It also never hides its upstream. MacNativeGames' GPU fixes were absorbed in, and the acknowledgments say so plainly. Part of why the press was willing to cover it is this stance: its own game, its own keys, zero game files in the repo, MIT license, and clear credit to whoever wrote the code.

What it won't do, 141 repos have picked up

nxnative itself is command-line only. Under "How to play" in the README, the first section is "With a Mac app", which proactively lists four GUIs built by others and makes clear: "those are separate projects, take issues to them."

The result is an ecosystem that has grown around it (GitHub search for nxnative, 11-06 has 141 repos):

  • GUI: The biggest is NX2Apple at 17 days and 3,700 stars; LumaNX, NX Play, NxLibrary and others sit around one or two hundred stars.
  • Ports to other platforms: the Android version nx2android has 828 stars; the Apple TV version TVPort was covered by 9to5 Mac and Engadget; and there are people building IPAs on Windows.
  • Single-game forks: Mario Kart World, Pokopia, Friend Collection and more.
  • Name-riding websites: nxnative.org has Spanish and Korean versions, carries ad slots, and even has a dedicated page explaining "which repo is the official one".

These projects make tutorials, videos and guides, and the traffic ultimately points back to nxnative. Andrew Tsai's tutorial and XDA's hands-on both used the GUIs, but the titles name nxnative.

The letter hanging overhead

Nintendo took Yuzu for $2.4M 2024 years ago, Ryujinx was taken down afterward, and then takedown notices went out in bulk to repos on GitHub. nxnative's shader translation uses code from Ryujinx. The image in the Techjunkie post has already been blocked after a copyright complaint. XDA argues that taking it down "makes no sense", but that's one outlet's opinion. The author, seedds, is an account registered 2013 years ago with no bio and no X presence; identity unknown. Whether AI wrote the code he hasn't said (unverified, but this wave of ports is widely acknowledged as AI-driven).

If it were you

C. You can learn a whole playbook for getting stars from this, but don't go head-to-head with this one. The slot "turn Switch games into native Apple apps" is already taken, the GUI slot is held by NX2Apple, Android and Apple TV have people on them, 141 repos are crowded together, the growth rate has dropped to a third of the prior week, and the whole category hangs on a Nintendo takedown notice.

  • Who it suits: developers who can read other people's low-level code and abstract a single breakthrough into a general tool within days; those with a track record in hard areas like emulators, compilers, graphics APIs and reverse engineering; and people who write clear English READMEs and know how to phrase a line so people want to screenshot it.
  • Who it doesn't suit: anyone wanting to build yet another nxnative shell or single-game fork (the second-place shell has only two or three hundred stars); anyone wary of legal risk, since projects in this category can be wiped at any time, and your name with them; anyone with only a few hours a week, because this playbook runs on dozens of commits a day in the first three weeks.
  • How to do it: watch for repos where "someone did it first, but only for one thing". The sign is a single-game, single-model or single-site project that gains a thousand stars in a few days, with the README showing which parts are actually generic. Split out the generic parts and build them so "any one you own works", and on day one state the counterintuitive selling point in the first README line (something like "not an emulator"). Credit upstream and send fixes back. Put screenshot-ready material like poster walls and compatibility lists in the README. Build only the core yourself, and explicitly hand GUIs and other platforms to the community in the README.
  • How to get stars: post first in niche subreddits to build the first few hundred stars; then get a "screenshot + one line" in front of tech accounts on X and the YouTubers and TikTok creators in the field. nxnative's breakout point was an X post that led to TechSpot. After that, release a new demonstrable milestone every few days (a new game, 60 fps, a new generation of console), giving media and video creators a reason to do another piece. Multilingual videos grew organically, and a multilingual README helps.
  • When to get in before it: within the first week after an original project breaks out. nxnative created its repo only a day after d2r-mobile, and started taking off on day 11. A general-purpose tool built on the same method, if you're two weeks late, someone has already claimed the spot.
  • What would show you read it wrong: ① If Nintendo sends nxnative a takedown and the repo is wiped, that shows projects that rewrite other people's games should never be touched, however good the method. ② If the next "single breakthrough" appears and the people building the general version don't get near the original creator's stars within a month, that shows nxnative caught two one-off events, the AI porting wave and the Switch 2 jailbreak, rather than the method itself working. ③ Conversely, if someone in another field (say, a tool that supports only one model) gets a thousand stars in a week by "generalizing", that shows the playbook is reusable and worth tracking year-round.

Why seedds/nxnative could run

Channel: GitHub. Repo created 2026-10-13; by 2026-11-06 it had 12,436 stars and 2,081 forks (our github data); the GitHub API's live value that day was 12,802 / 2,171.

One line

nxnative is an open-source script set. Users run one command on a Mac, using their own dumped Switch games (NSP) and prod.keys, and get an unsigned IPA or Mac app. The game's own ARM64 code runs directly on Apple silicon (NSO rewriter + Horizon system HLE host + NVN→Metal), so it's not an emulator. It took off because three things hit the same week: 2026's October wave of AI-assisted game ports, the highly shareable image of "a Switch game as a native app on your iPhone home screen," and the fact that it turned a one-game port into a framework that works for hundreds of games. Then X mega-accounts, tech outlets like TechSpot, TikTok, and Mac gaming YouTubers kept amplifying it.

  • Gained 7 stars in the last 2,912 days, vs 7 in the first 8,283 days; clearly cooling off. Fork/star ratio is 16.7%, above the median for new repos of similar age and size (about 11%), which suggests many people actually cloned and built it, and forked to modify, not just starred it.
  • The library flagged this as a suspect pattern: "new account, single repo surge." That's a structural flag because we only track one repo from this author. In fact, the account seedds was registered 2013 years ago and has 51 public repos. Each day of the surge lines up with an external event, so there's no sign of star farming.
  • About 1,101 commits, all within 24 days (estimated from GitHub commit pagination), so iteration was very fast. The author doesn't say whether AI was used; not verified. But this port wave is widely recognized as AI-driven (TechSpot 10-16, XDA 11-03).

Bottom line: many projects do a native port of one game, but nxnative is the first, and still the only one at scale, to automatically package any Switch game as a native Apple app. Its downstream ecosystem (GUI shells, Android, tvOS forks) has become its moat.

3. Copycats and ecosystem (already plenty)

5. Why it took off

  1. Highly shareable visuals: "Zelda and Mario as an app on your iPhone home screen, and not an emulator." One screenshot or a 15-second clip explains it. Techjunkie's post and the TikTok hits all leaned on this framing.
  2. Technically genuinely new: Switch and Apple silicon are both ARM, so no CPU instruction translation is needed; you only replace system services (HLE) and the graphics API (NVN→Metal). No JIT, which conveniently sidesteps the biggest obstacle emulators face on iOS. An M1 Air can lock at 60fps, and some games unlock from 30 to 60 or 120 fps, better than the console itself.
  3. Turned a single-game method into a general framework: d2r-mobile only does Diablo 2, MacNativeGames only does Zelda, and nxnative lists 141 tested games and automatically surveys and guesses the config for unknown games. In XDA's words: "turns a technique previously used for individual games into a broader framework."
  4. Timing: the October AI porting wave was at its peak, so media and audiences already had attention ready to spend. The Switch 2 jailbreak came right after, and nxnative and its forks quickly ran Switch 2 exclusives like Mario Kart World, producing a single-day peak of +2,743 (10-28).
  5. Compliance posture lowered the spread barrier: "your own game + your own keys." The repo contains no game files, it's MIT-licensed, and the credits are clear. Media could cover it without worry, and "will Nintendo send a DMCA?" became its own talking point.
  6. Open ecosystem let downstream projects do the distribution: the README actively recommends third-party GUIs. Shells like NX2Apple cut the barrier to a few clicks; Andrew Tsai's tutorials and XDA's hands-on test used these GUIs, and the traffic ultimately flowed back to nxnative.

6. Differentiation

Compared with emulators, it doesn't emulate the CPU and needs no JIT, outputs a standalone native app, performs better, and can be installed on an iPhone. Compared with other recompilation or porting projects, it's general-purpose and focused on Apple platforms (iPhone, iPad, and Mac are all supported). That difference is why it took off: single-game ports from the same period (LASRecomp, SavageWindRecomp, MacNativeGames) also got media coverage, but had half or fewer of the stars and forks; even d2r-mobile, which originated the method, has only 5.1k. "General-purpose" plus "runs on iPhone" is the combination only nxnative has.

7. What can be borrowed

  • It took a single breakthrough from someone else (d2r-mobile) and generalized it into a general tool. Public credit and two-way fix sharing mean the upstream doesn't resent it, and they send traffic to each other.
  • A one-liner that makes it instantly clear: "not an emulator, runs natively". The README's opening screen shows a game poster wall (141 games), which is itself screenshot material.
  • Hands off the setup-friction problem to the community (recommends GUI shells in the README); that spreads faster than writing a GUI yourself.
  • Rides the hot topics (the AI porting wave, the Switch 2 jailbreak), iterating fast with roughly 24 commits per 1,100 days, and keeps producing new shareable milestones (60fps, Switch 2, Mario Kart World).

8. Visibility check

Widely discussed: X big accounts, TechSpot, TechPowerUp, XDA, 9to5Mac, Engadget, and Tencent News have all covered it; several TikTok videos have hundreds of thousands of views; SEO ad sites riding its name and 141 derivative libraries have appeared. It has no revenue (purely open source) and isn't a business you can copy to make money; the copycats are all building ecosystem shells and platform ports.

9. Uncertain

  • Legal risk: Nintendo issued DMCAs against Yuzu and Ryujinx 2024 years ago, and against many GitHub repos 2025 years ago. The Techjunkie post on X was "disabled due to a copyright holder report". Whether nxnative will be taken down is unknown; XDA says a takedown "doesn't make sense", but that is only XDA's view.
  • The author's identity is unclear (seedds has no bio and no X account); whether AI coding was used is unverified.
  • I couldn't get the post timestamp for the Reddit thread that drove the 10-18 mini-spike (Reddit 403).
  • Real usage: you need a Mac, Xcode, and your own dumped games and keys, so the barrier is high; stars far exceed the number of people who actually build it.
