DeepSeek's agent can't draw images, and a Taipei indie dev filled the gap on day 4: how dsh-image-gen got 1,100 stars among tens of thousands of plugins
What it is An image-generation plugin for the DeepSeek Harness: in chat, the agent batch-generates images, you circle areas on a canvas to edit them, and multiple models compare side by side. It ships with 500 prompt templates, connects to 7 cloud model providers and local ComfyUI, and can generate images directly via ChatGPT / Grok / Google subscription logins without buying an API key.
Why it took off DSH couldn't generate images, and it filled that gap on day 4, grabbed the most generic package name, and took the "how to generate images in DSH" search answer plus dozens of directory sites. It has the most complete feature set in its category and ships a new version every two days. In late October, DSH's desktop release and the "Big Fat Fish" meme brought in lots of ordinary users, and stars accelerated.
CHow you could follow it Don't build another DSH image plugin. Watch the next platform that opens plugins, and in the first week fill the gap users ask about first ("can it do X?"). Grab the unprefixed generic name, post on the official community and Reddit using the phrase users actually search, then ship fast updates for new users' subscriptions and relay keys.
- Data (updated daily) · Repo created 2026-08-17 · 1,163 stars · 7 days +132
GitHub · stars Data 2026-10-09 → 2026-11-08 (31 days, 31 observations). Points before 10-28 come from deeply / archive backfill, not every day has one
On DeepSeek Harness (DSH)'s 4th day of open source, a developer with only 4 followers on GitHub posted an image-generation plugin and grabbed the most generic name on npm: dsh-image-gen. 81 days later it had 1,148 stars (GitHub, 11-06), the most of any DSH image plugin and growing fastest, while at least 7 libraries are named dsh-image-gen. This piece covers what it is, where the stars came from, why this one won, and how to copy the move on the next new platform.
A post with only 1 likes
On Aug 13, 2026, DeepSeek open-sourced DSH, an agent platform where "everything is a plugin." The main repo is now at 270k+ stars. It can write code, chat, and read images, but it can't draw.
In the early hours of Aug 18, shanliuling posted in DSH's official Discussions, titled "I added ChatGPT-style in-chat image generation to DeepSeek Harness":
The goal is simple: let DeepSeek Harness generate images directly in chat, like ChatGPT. … The project just launched and is still being improved. … Try it out, open Issues, and feel free to leave a ⭐ Star.
As of today the post has 1 likes and no replies. The author is in Taipei, describes themselves as "an AI engineer by day, indie dev by night," and their best previous project had 188 stars.
But two-plus months later, on Oct 24, someone else asked in the same Discussions for DeepSeek to add native image generation, and their first reason was: the community already has people building it, "like DeepSeek Harness's plugin dsh-image-gen." A post nobody replied to became the standard answer to "how do I generate images in DSH."
What it is
A plugin for DSH, installed with one command: pnpm dsh plugin --profile web add dsh-image-gen@latest. The README even teaches a shortcut: paste this line to the agent in DSH: "Help me install the image generation plugin, run in terminal…"
Once installed, you talk in chat and the agent does the drawing:
- "Make 4 illustrations for this article, consistent flat illustration style, 16:9" — the agent splits it into 4 prompts and generates them one by one, up to 10 at a time, and one failure doesn't affect the others;
- "Replace the sword I circled with an axe, keep everything else" — circle what to change on the canvas, and even a stick-figure sketch can become a finished image;
- "Same prompt, have GPT and Gemini each produce one for comparison" — multiple models side by side on one canvas;
- "Draw a menu in hand-drawn style #123" — apply a template from the built-in 500 prompt examples.
The backend connects to 7 cloud model providers including Gemini, OpenAI and compatible APIs, Seedream, Qwen, Grok, and Zhipu, plus local ComfyUI. The most prominent line on the README's first screen is: "Already have a ChatGPT, Grok, or Google subscription? Just log in to generate images, no API key purchase needed." Apache-2.0 open source, free.

npm downloads follow the same curve: August 4,961, September 16k, October 50k, and 10-30 to 11-05 at 23k per week (npm, 11-06). Discount this number: it publishes a version almost every two days, and CI and mirrors inflate downloads. Several similar plugins also sat around 20k weekly downloads over the same period.
No viral post, no press coverage, and no big accounts retweeting it on Chinese X that I could find. Its stars came in through these channels:
Grab the search answer slot. 8-18 That Reddit post is titled "DeepSeek Harness didn't have ChatGPT-style image generation…" (whether the poster is the author wasn't verified). An image-generation gateway company 8-31 wrote on its blog that when Google's AI Overview answered "how does DSH generate images," the first source it cited was this post.
The name is the distribution. DSH plugins install via dsh plugin add <npm-package-name>. It got the unprefixed dsh-image-gen; a same-named project created two days earlier only did GPT image generation, has 6 stars now, and missed the name. Other same-named libraries have to install via @someone/dsh-image-gen or a git URL. Users who copy-paste the tutorial command, or ask their agent to "install an image plugin," most often land on this one. The more same-named libraries there are, the more it looks like they're funneling traffic to it.
Directory sites auto-index it. After DSH went open source, dozens of auto-scraping plugin directories appeared: dsh-plugin.org, dsh.plus, dshfind, dshindex, skillsllm… It's listed on nearly all of them. On dsh-insights it gets an S grade with 95 points (perfect scores on docs, discoverability, and maintenance), and its README carries that badge, an AtomGit mirror, and a linux.do friend link.
Small spread in the Chinese community. An open-source promo post on linux.do got 252 views and 9 likes; a tech blogger 8-25 wrote two tutorials; and a linux.do list of "8 must-install DSH plugins" included it. None of these are big.
The late-October wave was most likely platform-driven. DSH's desktop app 10-12 launched; in mid-to-late October, "Big Fat Fish" and "fish disaster" memes appeared on Bilibili and Zhihu, with many people describing DSH as an AI that writes its own comments. Phoenix News 10-23 covered it. This wave brought in many non-coding ordinary users who wanted "Big Fat Fish" to make images, memes, and desktop pets. Over the same period the desktop-pet plugin gained 762 stars in a week. dsh-image-gen's daily npm downloads first rose to 4,435 10-26, and stars followed from 10-27. The timing lines up, but there's no direct evidence of causation (inference).
Why this one
It filled the most visible gap. For a text-only agent, the first gap users hit is "can it draw me a picture?" It filled that on day 4, and even in Oct 24 people were still petitioning the official channel for image generation. The gap persisted, and it stayed the answer.
Where others built a button, it built a studio. Most in its category are "one generate_image tool + a settings page." It has the full set: batch generation in chat, canvas circle-to-edit, character consistency, multi-model comparison, a gallery, and a prompt library. The most similar dsh-imagegen-video came two months later and has 74 stars.
Keyless access caught new users. September added subscription login, and 10-28 added multiple relay channels. The ordinary Chinese users who flooded in during October mostly had ChatGPT subscriptions or relay-station keys rather than official API keys, and those two updates matched them exactly. Other projects also offer subscription login, but only this one builds it into a full image workbench.
It kept installing. 81 days, 39 releases, nearly one every two days. Each release note names the issue it fixes, and some list test counts (v0.9.1: "37 files, 582 tests"). Windows and Ubuntu CI, and it kept up with every DSH plugin panel redesign. On a new platform where plugins keep breaking on install, that alone is a reason to pick it. 65 accounts have touched its issues and PRs, and there are 8 contributors besides the author.
To be clear: full features aren't the whole reason. Shipping first, the generic package name, and directory-site listings decide whether users find it first when they search or type the install command. Features and maintenance decide whether they stick around and star it.

| GooDAnDReaDY/dsh-image-gen | 13 stars | Multiple backends plus matting and upscaling. Package name has a prefix. |
| At least 6 same-named libraries, including LeemanCheung/dsh-image-gen | 0–6 stars | One backend, one tool |
| V1ki/dsh-plugin-subscriptions and other subscription-connect plugins | 181–567 stars | Turns a subscription into DSH's main model, and it can generate images as a side effect. Not an image workspace. |
| DSH official | — | No built-in image generation. If the official team ships it someday, this cell changes. |
The DSH plugin ecosystem is already very crowded: one awesome list indexes 9,275 plugins, dozens of them for image generation. In image generation, it's the leader, and people are already splitting it apart, porting its ComfyUI backend, and making "enhanced" forks of it.
If it were you
C. The playbook is worth learning, but image generation on DSH is already occupied by it with dozens of similar plugins, so building another DSH image plugin will struggle to stand out. What's actually copyable is moving on the first week of the next platform that opens plugins.
Who it's for: developers who watch new platform launches and move fast. When a new agent platform, editor, or AI client opens plugins, you can ship a working version within a week. Ideally you already use that platform yourself and know where users first hit a gap.
Who it's not for: anyone who wants to build yet another DSH image plugin (the leader has 1,100 stars and is still shipping a version every two days). Anyone who hopes to differentiate by piling on features after the platform has been open a month or two (the name and the answer slot are already taken). Anyone without patience for long-term maintenance (half its stars came from "it kept installing").
How to do it:
- In the first week a new platform opens plugins, list the three things users will ask "can it..." about first (draw pictures, search the web, read files, voice...). Pick the most visible one the official team hasn't built.
- Claim the most generic package or plugin name on day one. No prefix, no your-name. On platforms where install is "one command" or "ask your agent to install it," the name is the distribution.
- Ship a minimal version that works first, then grow it into a full workflow. Its v0.1.0 only generated images in chat. The canvas, comparison, and prompt library came in the following two months.
- Watch what users already have: if they've paid for a subscription, support subscription login; if they use a relay, support multiple channels. Before and after each big influx of users, ship a release that matches what they have.
- High-frequency releases, with release notes that name the issue each one fixes.
How it got users: on launch day, post in the official community and on Reddit, with titles phrased as the question users would search ("X can't draw?"), aiming to get cited by search and AI summaries. Bilingual README, a feature graphic above the fold, one-line install, plus a line saying "send this to your agent." Go after each directory and health-score site that showed up early on the platform, adding badges and filling in details. When a platform moment brings in new users, ship a release and write a tutorial for them.
Deadline: the first week to first month after the platform opens plugins. DSH's image plugins appeared in a flood two or three days after the plugin system opened in August, and grew to dozens over two months. Wait a month, and the generic names and answer slots are gone.
Where the read was wrong: (1) In the months that followed, DSH officially built in image generation, yet dsh-image-gen's stars and downloads kept rising. So it was the workspace itself that mattered, not just filling a gap, and "ship first" should be weighted down. (2) Later image plugins with weaker names quickly passed it, so the name and being first weren't worth that much. (3) If you do the same on another new platform, launching in week one and grabbing the generic name, the stars stayed in the dozens for a long time. So its October surge was mostly carried by a one-off event like the "big fish" moment, which you can't count on.
Data and sources: star counts and daily numbers come from GitHub (10-09 to 11-06; live value 11-06 1,148 stars, 69 forks). npm downloads come from the npm downloads API (8-15 to 11-05). Two Discussions threads (#2935,08-18, #10899,10-24) are from GitHub, read on 11-06. Install commands and above-the-fold copy come from the repo README; versions and release notes come from Releases (read on 11-06). The Reddit post titles come from search snippets. The claim about Google AI summaries citing it comes from the Modellix blog (08-31). The "fish disaster" comes from Phoenix News (10-23). Star counts for similar projects come from GitHub (10-28 to 11-06). Where we write "inferred," it's an inference.

One line
DeepSeek Harness (DSH, the "everything is a plugin" agent platform DeepSeek open-sourced in 2026-08-13, main repo at 274k stars) can't generate images on its own. This plugin is the most feature-complete, most actively maintained image generation plugin for DSH, and it claimed the generic name dsh-image-gen on npm. Cold start came from posting in the DSH official Discussions, Reddit, and linux.do in the first week, plus automatic listings on dozens of DSH plugin directory sites. In late October the DSH desktop app launched and a Bilibili creator, "大肥鱼," pushed it into wider view, bringing a wave of non-developer users. Stars went from single digits a day to 30–78 a day.
1. Basic data
- 2026-08-17 created the repo (day 4 after DSH went open source). Author shanliuling (Spark⚡, Taipei, "AI engineer by day, indie developer by night"; GitHub has only 4 followers; X handle @zhangjinlin13). Other repos by the author: skills-link 188 stars, meme-sticker 58 stars, WxArticleSaver 40 stars; also opened 3 awesome-dsh lists, each with 0 stars.
- Stars (github repo_day): 10-09 590 → 10-26 698 (about +8 a day) → 10-27 729, 10-28 807 (+78, the largest single-day gain in the observation window), 10-29 849, 10-30 898, 10-31 959, 11-01 1031 → 11-06 1126 (+10–26 a day). The GitHub API live value is 11-06 1148 stars and 69 forks. From 8-17 to 10-09 it averaged about 11 stars a day. 10-10 there was one drop of -16, cause unverified.
- Same-period comparison of similar projects (10-28→11-06, github repos): dsh-image-gen +319; dsh-vision-router +37; modlens +225 (base 4557); dsh-meme +99; dickpy/dsh-imagegen +20; dsh-imagegen-video +9. In the image generation category, it grew fastest recently.
- npm
dsh-image-gen: August downloads 4,961 → September 16,428 → October 50,422; 10-30–11-05 one-week total 22,998 (api.npmjs.org). Daily downloads went from about 2,800,10-26 10-22 to 4,435. Note: 40 frequent releases, plus CI and mirrors, inflate download counts. Over the same period dsh-vision-router had 22,303 in one week and dsh-meme 21,253, roughly the same order of magnitude. The npm package was created 8-17, and the maintainer is shanliuling. - Releases: v0.1.0 (8-17) to v0.10.3 (11-05), 40 releases in total, almost one every 2 days. Each release note spells out the test count (for example v0.9.1 says "37 files, 582 tests") and the issue it addresses.
- Community: 100 issues/PRs, 65 distinct accounts involved, 32 PRs; 8 contributors besides the author (GitHub API). dsh-insights gives it an S 95/100 (documentation, discoverability, and maintenance all 100).
2. Competitors
The DSH plugin ecosystem is extremely crowded: the dsh-plugin topic has tens of thousands of repos, and the awesome-dsh-plugin list indexes 9,275 entries. Image generation alone has dozens of plugins, and at least 7 repos are named exactly dsh-image-gen.
| Competitors | Form | Launched | Scale | How it differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| dickpy/dsh-imagegen | Open-source DSH plugins | 2026-08-15 | 170 stars | Only OpenAI-compatible endpoints (gpt-image / dall-e), with a sidebar workspace. No subscription login without a key, no inspiration library or canvas. |
| q253595422/dsh-imagegen-video | Open source | 2026-10-15 | 74 stars | Image plus video, infinite canvas, multiple model-family protocols. Closest in shape, but two months later. |
| LeemanCheung/dsh-image-gen | Open source | 2026-08-15 (2 days earlier) | 6 stars | GPT Image only, via Codex subscription OAuth. Same name, but didn't get the npm generic name. |
| GooDAnDReaDY/dsh-image-gen | Open source | 2026-08-18 | 13 stars; npm @goodandready had 30 downloads in 4,360 days | 8 backend plus cutout, upscale and similar processing; uses a scoped package name |
| hoyyang / haimuhaimu / Anyway-one / hiocobueno653-pixel's dsh-image-gen | Open source | 8-19 ~ 10-24 | 0–1 stars | Single backend (Bailian, any gateway, gpt-image-2), thin features |
| whiteS18/dsh-image-generation, yupaoa/dsh-image-lite, dsh-tool-imagegen and others | Open source | 8–October | Single-digit stars | Single tool + settings page |
| wonderandyou/dsh-qwen-paint, kingcharleslzy-ai/dsh-qwen-studio | Open source | October | 66 / 45 stars | Only runs locally via ComfyUI / Qwen-Image; the latter is derived from its v0.9.1 |
| V1ki/dsh-plugin-subscriptions, WSL043/dsh-codex-subscription, franksong2702/dsh-codex-connect, pi2dsh | Open source | 8-13 ~ 8-19 | 567 / 383 / 181 stars | Lets DSH use ChatGPT / Grok and other subscriptions as the main model, some also generate images on the side; the focus is chat models, not an image workbench |
| Modellix Design module, WaveSpeed CLI skill | Plugins / skills from commercial services | late 2026-08 | Not verified | Tied to its own paid gateway |
| DSH official | Big-company features | — | — | No built-in image generation from the official team; official Discussions #10899 (10-24) still has people asking for "native image generation" |
Verdict: lots of competitors, but none comes close to it in completeness and maintenance. The few that clash with its name actually bring it traffic.
3. Growth tactics (evidence)
- Shipped before the platform gap closed.DSH 8-13 is open source, and it 8-17 built the repo and published to npm the same day. 8-18 The author posted "I added ChatGPT-style in-chat image generation to DeepSeek Harness" on DSH's official Discussions (#2935, only 1 likes). The same day, a Reddit r/DeepSeek post titled "DeepSeek Harness didn't have ChatGPT-style image generation…" appeared (Brave shows 8-18; whether the author is shanliuling is unverified, but the title means the same as his Discussions post). Modellix's 8-31 blog notes that when Google AI Overview answers "how to generate images in DSH," the first source it cites is this post. So the search question "can DSH make images" now has its answer slot taken by it.
- Generic npm name. DSH installs with
dsh plugin add <npm package name>. It got the unscopeddsh-image-gen, while at least 6 same-named GitHub repos can only be installed via scoped package names or git URLs. When users, tutorials, or even the DSH agent are asked to "install an image gen plugin," it's the one most likely to be picked. The README even includes the line "Send this to the Agent in DSH: help me install the image gen plugin…" - Directory sites and SEO volume. Dozens of auto-indexing directory sites have appeared in the DSH ecosystem (dsh-plugin.org, dsh.plus, dshfind, dshindex, dshx.io, dshopen.org, dsh-hub.cc, skillsllm, skillhub.cn, deepseekharness.link, awesome-dsh-plugin.com, dsh-insights…), and it's listed on nearly all of them. It also wired up a dsh-insights health badge, an AtomGit mirror, and a linux.do friend-link badge. The 3 awesome lists the author maintains themselves are each at 0 stars, which didn't help.
- Chinese community. Open-source promo posts on linux.do are small (8-28,252 views, 9 likes). A linux.do post, "8 must-install plugins for DeepSeek Harness," lists it (the post is now deleted or set to private). The yeyupiaoling blog has 8-25 tutorials. Most "must-install 10" roundups on Zhihu, Tencent Cloud and cnblogs skip it (they push ModLens, desktop pets, etc.). No single viral post found.
- Platform events (the main explanation for the late-October acceleration). The official DSH desktop app launched 10-12; 10-15 DeepSeek outage compensation credits, and the same day OpenCode opened V4.1 Flash for free; then "big fat fish / fish disaster" took off on Bilibili and Zhihu, with many users running DSH as an AI that brushes comments on its own (Phoenix News 10-23 covered it, regret.site 10-26 wrote a postmortem). This wave brought in many non-developer users who wanted the "big fat fish" to make images, memes and desktop pets: in the same period dsh-pet grew +762 in a week and dsh-meme +99. dsh-image-gen's daily npm downloads rose first, and its stars went from 10-25/26 to 10-27 (11-01) after. The correlation is in timing; causation is not verified.
- Product updates hit the demand. v0.6.5 (9-14) added "image generation without an API key via subscription accounts" (ChatGPT / Grok / Google). v0.10.0 (10-28, right around the day of the +78 single-day spike) added OpenAI-compatible multi-channel support, i.e. the "relay stations" common in China. Newly arriving Chinese users mostly hold subscriptions or relay keys rather than official API keys, and these two updates fit that exactly.
- X, media, ads: x-radar's corpus returned no posts about dsh-image-gen, shanliuling, or image generation in DSH (the corpus may be incomplete); no media coverage specifically of it; it's an open-source project with no ads.
4. Why it took off
- Timing: DSH is a pure-text agent, and image generation was the first gap users hit (both 8-18 and 10-24 in Discussions have people asking for it). It filled the gap on day 4, claiming "first to ship" and the search answer slot.
- Name: it grabbed the generic npm name
dsh-image-gen. Dozens of directory sites, tutorials, and agent auto-installs route traffic to it, and the same-named repos became its traffic source. - Completeness: competitors mostly ship "one generate_image tool + one settings page"; this one has batch generation in chat (up to 10 images at once, one failure doesn't affect the rest), canvas-selection local editing, character consistency, side-by-side multi-model comparison, a gallery, a Studio workbench, a 500+ prompt inspiration library (with the 2k-star awesome-gpt-image-35 case collection and baoyu's combo generator built in), plus 7 cloud backends and local ComfyUI.
- No key needed: generate images directly by logging in with a ChatGPT / Grok / Google subscription. Subscription login isn't unique to it (V1ki, Codex Connect, and LeemanCheung also have it), but it's the only one that builds subscription login into a complete image workbench.
- Maintenance: 81 days, 40 releases, about 600 tests, CI on Windows and Ubuntu, issues closed out in full, and it kept adapting as DSH's plugin panel went through 0.1.x to 0.2.x redesigns. In an ecosystem where plugins often fail to install, that alone is a reason to pick it (dsh-insights gave it an S, maintenance score 100).
- External wave: the late-October DSH desktop app and the "big fat fish" going viral widened the user base from developers to ordinary players, and image generation is a must-have for them.
5. Differentiation
What sets it apart is "a full image studio, not an image generation tool": batch generation in chat, canvas-selection editing, multi-model comparison, a prompt library, a gallery, plus subscription no-key login and local ComfyUI. This is also the main reason it has stars: competitors mostly sit at 0–170 stars, and the closest in form, dsh-imagegen-video, came out two months later and has only 74 stars. But differentiation alone doesn't explain everything. First-to-ship, the generic npm name, and auto-indexing by directory sites matter just as much, because they ensure users see it first in any search. "No key needed" is a lowered-barrier selling point, not an exclusive moat.
6. Visibility and copycats
- Visibility: it circulates in small circles. It's a top image-gen plugin in the DSH plugin ecosystem, common on directory sites and Chinese tutorials, but there's no media coverage, no X amplification found, and the linux.do post has only 252 views. It's free and open source, with no revenue.
- Copying and borrowing: kingcharleslzy-ai/dsh-qwen-studio (45 stars, its NOTICE states it's derived from v0.9.1 of this project); EmberwingAviation/dsh-media-gen (its ComfyUI backend and workflow placeholder protocol were ported from it); LiuRJ99/dsh-image-gen (self-described "maintenance and enhancement fork"); the donggua-zen/guada repo (a knowledge-base product with 65 stars) includes a
docs/dsh-image-gen-analysis.mdthat dissects it; 1337hero/faster-chat also cites it in its spec docs; plus many more same-named, same-form image-gen plugins.
7. Takeaways
- In the first week after a platform opens plugins, fill the platform's most obvious capability gap and grab the most generic package / plugin name. On platforms where people install with "one sentence" or "let the agent install it for you," the name is the distribution.
- Early on a platform, a flood of auto-indexing directory sites appears. Take their badges, write a well-structured README (bilingual, screenshots, one-line install), and you can max out SEO.
- Users have already paid for subscriptions, so making them buy an API key is the biggest friction. Build "subscription login" into a complete workflow rather than shipping a standalone login plugin.
- Ship often, and spell out test counts and linked issues in release notes. In an unstable ecosystem, "it always installs" is itself the selling point.
8. Uncertain
- The author and popularity of the 8-18 Reddit post are unverified (Reddit blocked scraping).
- The acceleration from 10-27 to 11-01: whether it came from the "big fat fish" going viral, DSH 0.2.1's plugin discovery page / index, or some Bilibili / Xiaohongshu video I couldn't find, there's no direct evidence. The timing fits, but causation is unverified.
- How much of the 23k weekly npm downloads come from CI, mirrors or repeat installs is unclear.
- The card mentions "dsh-image-forge ported its ComfyUI backend": I could only find Demerier/dsh-image-forge (1 stars) and saw no license statement. The confirmed porters are dsh-media-gen and dsh-qwen-studio.
- The influence of the author's X account was not checked (x-radar corpus returned no results).
