Retitled, 1 points became 230: an 41-follower dev's "open-source Canva", and a star-gathering playbook anyone can copy

What it is An open-source design editor that runs in the browser, like Canva: edit posters, social graphics and slides from templates, export video, self-host it, no sign-up.

Why it took off The title "Open-Source Canva" sums up the pitch in one line. It hit the HN front page (230 points), and a batch of news sites and X repost accounts picked it up. The README feature table looks like "everything Canva has", and the open-source crowd has long lacked this slot. In early November Canva cut 22% of staff, and repost accounts tied the two stories together, bringing a second wave.

AHow you could follow it Don't build another open-source Canva. Do the same playbook with a different mainstream paid tool (full version + GIF feature table + an "Open-Source X" title on HN), or fill Doory's weakest gap, the template library, build an MCP-first image tool, or make a Chinese-language version.

Grade A: it gained traction without a famous name, existing users or exclusive resources. A dev with 41 followers pulled it off. The playbook is clear and the barrier is low, and copycats haven't appeared yet. The bets are whether the chosen X is broad enough and whether the HN shot lands, and the window is narrowing as vibe-coded projects multiply. Whispers in niche circles

On Oct 12, a project called Doory hit the Hacker News front page under the title "Doory – Open-Source Canva". Two days earlier it had been posted twice under other titles, each getting only 1 points. The author's GitHub account has just this one repo and 41 followers, and the code was mostly written by Claude. Within a month it had gathered over 2,400 stars, and in early November a second round came from Canva's layoff news. Below: how it grew, where the stars came from, whether the open-source world actually lacks this, and how you could build something similar.

Two posts at 1 points, one at 230

On Oct 10 the repo shaongitbd/doory was created. The same day the author, acley, posted the site doory.art to HN and got 1 points. Another account, Aditya_1, posted a Show HN that also got 1 points (how the two accounts are related is unverified).

Early on Oct 12 (UTC), acley reposted with a different title, linking straight to GitHub:

Doory – Open-Source Canva

This time it got 230 points and 80 comments and reached the front page. The product didn't change, only the title. The earlier versions made readers click through to learn what it was, while this one said it in 5 words: a paid product everyone has used, with "open-source" in front.

The comments were not kind. Someone went through the commit history: "The whole project was written by Claude, grown out of a single commit." Someone else said "six commits in three days" yet found a README section titled "Why people choose Doory", calling it "classic AI-generated marketing copy." Another pointed out that the license Claude generated requires all commits to be GPG-signed, which the repo doesn't do, so "under this license nobody can legally modify this code." Others said it crashed on first use. A few defended it: "Getting Claude to produce something this complete in roughly one pass is still impressive."

Criticism aside, the attention was real. The author replied in the comments, "We've changed some things based on your feedback". The README was later rewritten and now opens plainly: "This is a young project. The editor is complete, the template library is small (ten starter templates)." By 11-06, the commit count had grown from 6 to 277 (GitHub, 11-06).

How the stars grew

(GitHub daily stars, 10-13 to 11-06)

The first wave's path is clear: HN front page → a flood of AI news sites that auto-write from HN → repost accounts on X. Most of those later sites just followed the buzz, so the higher the HN score, the more people wrote about it.

The second wave is less clear. Several things hit at about the same time: Canva's layoffs made Bloomberg, TechCrunch and The Guardian; the self-hosting blog noted.lol 11-03 published a review; Doory shipped a new release with multi-arch Docker images; and the @rammcodes post was also cross-posted to Threads. But that X post itself has only 55 likes, so it can't account for 300 extra stars on its own. Which specific item drove the spike is unverified. What we can say is that repost accounts tied "Canva bad news" to "open-source alternative" without the author having to do anything.

Two more points: the fork-to-star ratio is about 8.6% (203 / 2,346), normal for a new project of this size, with no sign of star-buying. The author has no X account, and I saw no promotion from him on social media.

Does the open-source world really lack a Canva?

Yes. People on r/selfhosted have been asking for a self-hostable Canva without locked Pro features since 2022. Here are the existing options:

ProjectScaleWhy it isn't "open-source Canva"
Penpot62k starsAimed at Figma, for UI design, not posters and social graphics
Excalidraw / tldraw135k / 51k starsA whiteboard, with no templates, video export or brand kit
Graphite28k starsProfessional programmatic vector / bitmap tools

canvix170 stars, created 2026-09A "community Canva alternative" one month before Doory, never took off
OpenDesign123 stars, created 2026-04Also a social-graphics editor built on fabric.js, never took off

(GitHub,11-06)

The last three rows matter most. They came before Doory with roughly the same positioning, yet had only a hundred or two hundred stars. Two differences: first, Doory's README showed a whole feature table (animation, MP4/GIF export, real-time collaboration, version history, presentation mode, brand kit, in-browser background removal, 27.5k icons, print PDFs with bleed), which reads as "everything Canva has". Second, only Doory reached the HN front page.

One detail got singled out: Doory ships an MCP server, so Claude and Cursor can make graphics for you and batch-fill templates. One of the most upvoted suggestions on HN was that a Canva alternative should be API- and MCP-first, not treat it as an afterthought.

Its weak spot is just as plain: only 10 templates. An HN commenter hit the point: "Most of Canva's value is in its templates, assets and library. The software itself is fairly simple." Another was blunter: "The templates look like something I could have had Claude make." The license is the Attribution Assurance License, which requires the author's name to be prominently displayed in the UI, and noted.lol's review raised that too. None of this has stopped the stars, but it affects whether anyone actually uses it for work and whether anyone wants to contribute code.

How many people know about it

It spread through developer and self-hosting circles: the HN front page, dozens of news sites, a few big X accounts. Almost nobody outside that world knew about it, and mainstream design media never covered it. As of 11-06, I haven't found any new repo built on the same playbook after Oct 12.

If it were you

Verdict: A. This playbook doesn't depend on the author's fame, network or existing users. An account with 41 followers and one repo made it work. The barrier to copying is low. The bets are two: whether the "X" you pick is broad enough, and whether the HN shot lands.

Who it suits: developers who use AI to ship a complete product fast and want stars and a portfolio. Especially people who can pick a mainstream paid tool and make the feature list look complete.

Who it doesn't suit: anyone who wants to head-on build a second "open-source Canva". The title is already Doory's, and a second project with the same name will only be compared with it on HN. It also doesn't suit people who can't take commenters calling a project "vibe-coded" or "slop", which every project like this will get.

How to do it, ranked by how worthwhile:

  1. Swap the X: find a tool everyone has used, that costs money, and that the open-source world has no decent alternative for. Build a complete self-hostable version. Check two things when choosing: can the title be written as "open-source [X]" in five words; and does r/selfhosted show people asking for years.
  2. Fill the gap Doory left: templates. A high-quality, commercially usable open-source template library that imports straight into editors like Doory (posters, social graphics, resumes, invitations), or an MCP-first image tool that generates posters and short videos from repo content. Some HN users have already said they want this.
  3. Change the ecosystem or audience: the same "open-source Canva", made for Chinese users (Chinese fonts, Xiaohongshu and WeChat Official Account sizes, domestic asset sources), or as a component others can embed in their own products. Kuaitu Design already has 8,000 stars in the Chinese community, so there's clearly demand.

How to get users: HN is the home turf. Title it just "Name – Open-Source X". If the first post gets no traction, repost with a different title a day or two later. Doory landed on the third try. Put a GIF on the first screen of the README (Doory showed "open a template, change the title, change the discount, click share") plus a feature table. Build a web version on the site that works without sign-up. Don't put AI-written "why users choose us" copy in the README: that one line got Doory roasted across the comments. Then watch for bad news about the target company (layoffs, price hikes, changed terms). In those days repost accounts will come to you on their own.

When to move: the earlier the better, before the first half of 2027. The cost of one person shipping a complete product with AI keeps falling, "open-source [X]" titles will keep multiplying, and HN readers are likely losing patience with vibe-coded projects.

Signs you've misjudged it: ① Over the next month or two, "Open-Source X" posts flood HN and most fail to reach the front page, meaning the title trick is worn out. ② Doory itself drops back to single-digit daily stars by late November and nobody adds templates, meaning the stars were a short burst and the "it's complete" pitch is weaker than estimated here. ③ Someone copies the approach for a different X, gets the HN front page and only a few hundred stars, meaning Doory's round owed a lot to luck (such as catching the Canva news) and less of it is replicable.

shaongitbd/doory: an open-source Canva alternative, and why it took off

Data as of 2026-11-06. Star counts come from our GitHub repo data (repo_day) and the GitHub API. External sources were searched via Jina / Exa, HN Algolia and original web pages; every item links to its source.

Bottom line

Doory is a "fully featured, self-hostable" Canva alternative, largely written with AI (HN comments noted it started with only 6 commits, with Claude writing almost all of it in one go). It took off for three reasons: a title everyone understands, "Open-Source Canva", hit the HN front page; a README that shows off a lot of features, with GIF demos covering editing, animation, export, collaboration and MCP; and timing, in two waves. The first was the HN post on Oct 12, followed by a wave of AI-generated news sites and big X accounts reposting it. The second was on November 3–4, when Canva announced 22% layoffs, and the news pushed it up again. The open-source world has long lacked a template-driven design editor like Canva: Penpot targets Figma, and Excalidraw / tldraw are whiteboards. Doory fills that gap.

The author has only this one repo (a personal GitHub account with 41 followers, registered 2021 years ago).
  • The repo is under 60 days old, so by the usual pattern it wouldn't make trending, and trending played no role.
  • Causes of the second wave: its timing overlaps with the Canva layoffs, rammcodes / Threads reposts, the noted.lol review, and the v0.2.0 / v0.3.0 release shipping multi-arch Docker images (newreleases.io). The stargazer breakdown could not be pulled due to GitHub API rate limits, so which specific item drove the growth has not been verified.

Data from the repo_profile table in the github repo (2026-11-06), searched by keywords such as canva / design-editor / polotno. There is also a batch of "Canva-Pro cracked" bait repos with three to four hundred stars each; these are noise and not counted as competitors.

Why the similar projects didn't take off and Doory did: HyCanvas, canvix and OpenDesign have nearly the same positioning as Doory and similar timing, but each has only one or two hundred stars. The difference: (1) completeness. Doory's README lists animation, MP4/GIF export, real-time collaboration, version history, presentation mode, brand kits, in-browser background removal, 27.5k icons and MCP, looking like "everything Canva should have"; (2) the title. "Doory – Open-Source Canva" reached the HN front page, while competitors never did; (3) the AI news sites and big X accounts that followed were riding HN's momentum. The higher the heat, the more people wrote about it, a strong head-start effect.

3. Growth tactics

  1. HN front page (confirmed): The author tried two titles on 10-10 and got no traction. On 10-12 they switched to "Doory – Open-Source Canva" and got 230 points. The comments are full of talk about "vibe-coded" and licensing, and the controversy itself added to the buzz.
  2. AI news / aggregator auto-reposts (confirmed): on 10-12 a dozen-plus sites including Adafruit, daily.dev, hn.today, Times of SF, IO Digest, LavX, glonce and Italy's ilsoftware published it. Most are SEO sites that auto-generate from HN, giving it a lot of backlinks and a claim on the search term "doory canva alternative".
  3. X / Threads / Instagram repost accounts (confirmed): @RoundtableSpace posted on 10-17; @rammcodes posted on 11-04 tying it to the Canva layoffs and also posted on Threads. Instagram posts and reels and YouTube Shorts also reposted it. Whether these were organic or pushed by the author is unverified; no social accounts run by the author are visible (the GitHub profile lists no X account).
  4. Self-hosting community (confirmed): noted.lol review (11-03), German mizine.de tutorial, r/DigitalEscapeTools post; r/selfhosted has long had people asking "is there a usable Canva alternative" (post 1xmp21h). Whether Doory was recommended there could not be checked, since the original Reddit text is behind a verification wall.
  5. Platform event (timing lines up, causation unverified): Canva announced layoffs of 22% of staff 11-03. It was the company's first large-scale layoff, and media covered it heavily. Daily installs then rose +154 and +190 on 11-05 and 11-06.
  6. Own site doory.art: offers an online version usable without signing up, so people can try it without deploying.

4. Why users come and stay

  • Real demand: "a free, no-Pro-lock Canva you can self-host" has been asked for repeatedly on r/selfhosted for years (posts go back 2022 years), and no solid answer existed.
  • Good first impression: the GIF in the README shows "change the title, change the discount, click share" from a template, and doory.art needs no signup; export formats are broad, including MP4/GIF and print-ready PDF with bleed.
  • Rides the AI wave: a built-in MCP server lets Claude/Cursor make designs and batch-fill templates (bulk_fill). HN comments and several articles picked this out specifically.
  • Concerns: only 10 templates; the license is a modified Attribution Assurance License requiring the author to be credited prominently in running apps, with GPG signatures, which HN and noted.lol questioned; some HN users reported many bugs. None of this blocks stars, but it affects whether people actually use it and whether anyone forks it into a commercial version.

5. Visibility

It spread through the developer and self-hosting niches: it reached the HN front page, was covered by dozens of news sites, and was reposted by several X accounts with millions of followers. But it has no revenue, doesn't sell anything, and no mainstream design media has run an in-depth piece on it. For the term "open-source Canva" it is currently the leader.

VI. Copycats

In our database we found no new repo created after 10-12 that clearly copies Doory. The same-positioning HyCanvas, canvix and OpenDesign all predate it; they were early arrivals, not followers.

VII. What to take away

  • The title directly reads "open-source version of X" (X being a well-known paid product), and when the first post got no reaction, the author changed the title and reposted.
  • Use AI to quickly build a complete product with a "very full feature list," then pair it with a README that has a GIF and a feature matrix. Completeness itself becomes the hook.
  • Tack on an MCP interface to ride the AI agent wave.
  • Watch the target company's negative news (layoffs, price hikes) and build a second wave around it. Repost accounts will tie you to that news on their own.

8. Not sure

  • What channel drove 11-05/06's second acceleration: the stargazer timeline couldn't be pulled due to API rate limits, and the rammcodes X post had very little engagement. There may be big Threads/Instagram/TikTok accounts I didn't find (TikHub search returned nothing).
  • Whether the author hired repost accounts or posted from multiple accounts: 10-10 was posted twice on HN from two different accounts. Whether the second one, Aditya_1, is related to the author is unverified.
  • Actual usage: doory.art's traffic is unknown.
