# "Open-source Pipedrive": an SEO person open-sourced their company's internal CRM, got 74 stars in four months, then gained 278 in a single day

**What it is** A free sales CRM you host on your own server. The interface and workflow copy Pipedrive, with no per-seat pricing.

**Why it took off** It grabbed the "open-source Pipedrive alternative" spot, which almost nobody had claimed, and the author listed it in every alternatives directory they could find. What actually pushed the stars up was an untraced external mention 3, right in the week Pipedrive announced a restructuring.

**C** **How you could follow it** Copy the playbook, not the product: pick a SaaS that charges per seat and is currently annoying its users, build an "open-source alternative to X," fill up the alternatives directories and awesome lists, then post on HN and Reddit yourself instead of waiting for search traffic.

Grade C: the copyable part is the directory-plus-SEO playbook, and on this project it bought only 74 stars in four months. Those hundreds of stars came from a single untraceable mention, with few forks or watches, and star-botting isn't ruled out, so the payoff from following it is uncertain. Few people know about it yet

Warpdrive is a self-hostable sales CRM. The UI and workflow copy Pipedrive, it's MIT-licensed, and it's free. The author, Nick Sawinyh, is product and growth lead at a small company and came up through SEO. After he open-sourced it in July, he got it listed on nearly every "open-source alternative" directory, and for four months it got only 74 stars. Then in Nov 3 it suddenly gained 278 stars in a single day, and by Nov 6 it was at 564 stars (GitHub, 11-06). The directory-plus-search-terms playbook is something you can copy. The spike is not: where it came from, we still haven't figured out.

### An AI-written news brief

On November 3, 2026, at 4:45 (UTC), a news site called Reveneau published a short item titled "Warpdrive is a self-hosted open-source Pipedrive." The article ends with "This article was written by AI based on the source link." One line in it reads: "The repo now has 137 stars and 7 forks."

That line is evidence the spike was underway. The day before, the repo had 74 stars, and it had been flat for a full week on 74 (GitHub daily data, 10-28 to 11-03). Trendshift's day-by-day count shows it gained 278 that day (UTC), then +117, +76, +19, shrinking each day.

The timing lined up. Five days earlier, on October 29, Pipedrive, the Estonian unicorn, announced a "major restructuring" and closed its offices (ERR News). That same week, people on X were complaining about per-seat pricing: the author of Coolify posted a full self-hosted stack with "no per seat bs" and got 1,700 likes (@heyandras, 11-04). But no post proves that any of them sent people to Warpdrive.

### What it is

A CRM that covers only the core BD workflow: a kanban pipeline (drag deals between stages, with weighted amounts and stale-deal alerts), a deal workspace (activities, notes, files, email, and change history on one timeline), contacts and companies, two-way Gmail sending and open tracking. You sign in with Google Workspace, one docker compose file brings up the whole stack, and your data never leaves your machine.

The homepage is blunt: "No per-seat bill. Your customer data never leaves your infrastructure." The comparison is Pipedrive's own pricing page, at $14 to $79 per user per month (billed annually, 11-06).

It also spells out what it doesn't do: product catalog, invoicing, forecasting, automation workflows, web forms, plugin marketplace, mobile app. In 4, the v2.0 release added two things: an MCP server that lets Claude, ChatGPT, and Cursor read and write your pipeline but gives no delete or send-email permission, and direct import of Pipedrive's CSV export.

It's not a toy. The README says it's "used by a team's BD in production." It started as the author's company's internal tool, synced out of an internal repo, with 8 releases from July to November. The site's screenshots are captioned "real running instance, not mockups."

### Where the stars came from

| Date | What happened | star |
|---|---|---|
| 07-11 | Repo created | 0 |
| 07-19 | Released v1.0 and launched on Product Hunt the same day: 2 votes, ranked #446 | – |
| 08-12 | The OpenAlternative LinkedIn account auto-posted it | 72 |
| 08~October | The author submitted PRs to each alternatives directory and awesome list one by one, and built comparison pages on the site | About 74, 0–2 a day |
| 11-03 | An untraced one-time mention; an AI news site covered it the same day | +278 |
| 11-04 | Released v2.0 (adding MCP and Pipedrive import) | +117 |
| 11-06 | Natural decay | 564,12 forks |

(Star counts from GitHub daily data and Trendshift's day-by-day tracking; Product Hunt rank from the Product Hunt page)

Growth in the first four months came entirely from the author. He submitted PRs to awesome-foss-alternatives, awesome-open-source-alternatives, awesome-saas-directory, and open-source-saas, and he maintains his own awesome-open-source-crm list. OpenAlternative listed it, placed it under the Pipedrive, Attio, Clay, and Zoho alternative pages, and generated a "Twenty vs Warpdrive" comparison page. The warpdrivecrm.com site has only a few pages: the homepage, /vs/twenty, /vs/espocrm, and /migrate-from-pipedrive. The homepage FAQ reads "What is Warpdrive," "Is Warpdrive free," "Can I import from Pipedrive," which is clearly written for Google and AI search to index. The author previously ran curatedseotools, an SEO tools directory site (473 stars).

The playbook was well executed, but the result was 74 stars in four months. The real 500 came from the external mention on November 3, and that mention leaves no trace on HN, X, Reddit, Bluesky, or Product Hunt, and the author never mentioned it on their own X. It may have come from LinkedIn, a Telegram group, or a newsletter, or from a place search can't see, such as recommendation feeds on GitHub's homepage. (inferred)

### How real these stars are

Several things look off:

- **Only 12 forks, about 2% of stars.** Comparable open-source CRMs usually sit above 15% (Twenty 16%, Atomic CRM 64%).

- **0 people watching, and only 1 issues from outsiders** ("import from Pipedrive").

- **+268 in a day without making GitHub Trending.** On those days, the last place on the TypeScript daily chart gained only 9–18.

But there are signs in the other direction too: the growth rate fell off naturally, 278, 117, 76, 19, and an AI news site picked it up the same day. Whether stars were botted can't be determined from outside. The safer read is that **far more people bookmarked it than actually used it** . Projects like this can earn bookmarks, but they struggle to earn usage.

### Who it's competing with

"Open-source CRM" is already crowded:

| Project | Scale (11-06) | Compared with Warpdrive |
|---|---|---|
| Twenty | 60.5k stars, since 2022 | A general-purpose "open-source Salesforce" that also sells cloud hosting; it dominates the category |
| Krayin(laravel-crm) | 24k star | A general PHP CRM with an old-looking UI |
| Comp AI CRM | 11.9k stars, started 2026-07 | Backed by a company and funding, positioned as "a CRM for AI agents" |
| DeskcommCRM | 5.2k star | WhatsApp plus AI sales, competing with Kommo |
| EspoCRM / SuiteCRM / frappe CRM | 2.4k–5.8k star | Established, full-featured |
| Atomic CRM | 1.4k star | A template for developers to customize |

Warpdrive is the smallest in this table, but it holds a word nobody else has claimed: **"open-source Pipedrive"** . On OpenAlternative's Pipedrive alternatives page, it's essentially the only project explicitly positioned against Pipedrive. It isn't stronger than Twenty. It's narrower and more like one specific product: it serves only BD teams, copies Pipedrive's interactions, and offers a ready migration path. Directories index by "open-source alternative to X," and this slot was empty, so it went straight to the top.

Copycats haven't taken off yet. In late October, someone cloned it wholesale (not a fork) and opened 800+ neatly numbered issues, apparently using it as a base to expand with AI, 0 stars. I haven't seen any "open-source HubSpot," "open-source Close," or "open-source Attio" built on the same pattern that gained real traction.

### If it were you

**C: The "open-source X alternative" playbook is worth learning, but following it step by step will most likely get you dozens of stars, not hundreds.** The copyable parts (the directories, the awesome lists, the comparison pages) bought only 74 stars in four months here. The other 500 came from an untraceable mention, which you can't replicate.

**Who it's for** : someone who already has an internal tool their company actually uses, so open-sourcing it costs little extra; someone already comfortable with SEO and directory sites, who treats this as long-term search traffic and doesn't expect an overnight hit.

**Who it's not for** : anyone hoping to collect thousands of stars fast from one project, or anyone planning another Pipedrive clone or a general open-source CRM (the first slot is taken, the second has Twenty).

**How to do it** : pick a well-known, per-seat SaaS that users are currently unhappy with, and build only its core handful of features. Put "Open-source alternative to X" straight into the repo description and domain. Make it something you can use daily, show real screenshots, publish a feature-by-feature table against the original, and state clearly what you're deliberately leaving out. Then add the two selling points that work best right now: an MCP server and "one-click import from X."

**How to get users** : in the first week, submit to OpenAlternative and open a PR on every "open-source alternatives" awesome list. Keep the site to three page types: "vs competitor," "migrate from X," and FAQ. Then don't just wait for search: post a Show HN, post in the relevant subreddits, and post again in the week the original product has bad news (a price hike, layoffs, an outage). Warpdrive skipped this step, and its spike was luck.

**Deadline** : every "open-source X alternative" slot in the directories goes to whoever gets there first. Warpdrive claimed Pipedrive in under a week. "Rewriting per-seat SaaS as open source in the AI era" is becoming a trend, and most of the good slots will likely be taken by the first half of 2027. (inferred)

**What would show the read is wrong** : (1) Warpdrive's stars stall again before December, and its forks and issues don't grow either, which would mean the spike brought no users, since bookmarking and using are different things; (2) someone runs the same playbook on "open-source HubSpot / Attio" and gets over a thousand stars in two months, which would mean the playbook works better than estimated here and the estimate should go up; (3) the spike turns out to be bought or botted, which would leave only the directory playbook, capped at a few dozen stars.

Where users come from

- **Verified** **alternative directories and awesome lists (the author submitted them)** : the author sneg55 opened PRs to awesome-foss-alternatives#42, awesome-open-source-alternatives#33, awesome-saas-directory#27 and open-source-saas#2; OpenAlternative lists it under the Attio/Pipedrive/Clay/Zoho alternative pages, plus a Twenty vs Warpdrive comparison page; opensourcecrms, repocloud and others also list it

- **Verified** **Website SEO** : the warpdrivecrm.com sitemap has only the homepage, /vs/twenty, /vs/espocrm and /migrate-from-pipedrive; the homepage FAQ is formatted for AI search crawlers; the author previously ran an SEO directory site, curatedseotools (473 stars)

- **Verified** **Product Hunt** : launched 07-19, got 2 votes, finished #446 (producthunt database)

- Inferred **External exposure behind the 11-03 spike** : no mentions found on HN, X (real-time search via x-radar), Reddit, Bluesky or Product Hunt; the author's own X never mentioned it; the Reveneau AI news site reported it at 11-03 04:45 UTC when it was at 137 stars. Source unknown; possibly LinkedIn, newsletters or GitHub's recommendation feed, channels our search can't see. Star farming can't be ruled out

- Inferred **Timing: Pipedrive restructuring plus anger over per-seat pricing** : ERR News reported Pipedrive's restructuring and office closures, and coverage kept circulating from 10-29 to 11-02 11-04; the same week, a Coolify author posted a self-hosted suite pitched as 'no per seat', with 1.7k likes. There is no direct evidence linking these to warpdrive's spike

## sneg55/warpdrive: a self-hosted open-source alternative to Pipedrive

> Research date 2026-11-06. Data card: github repo (repo_day from 2026-10-28). GitHub, Trendshift, OpenAlternative and other external pages were all read on 2026-11-06.

### One line

Warpdrive is an MIT-licensed, single-tenant, self-hosted sales/BD CRM that closely replicates Pipedrive's core workflows: kanban pipelines, deal workspaces, contacts, and two-way Gmail. v2.0 added an MCP server and Pipedrive import. The author, Nick Sawinyh (sneg55), is product and GTM lead at Veodyn and came from an SEO background. The repo began as an internal BD tool for his company; after open-sourcing it, he spread it through an 'alternative directories + SEO' playbook. It reached 74 stars in four months, then jumped by 278 in one day in Nov 3. **The source of this spike is unknown** : no traces on HN, X, Reddit or Product Hunt.

### 1. Data: how the stars grew

- Built 2026-07-11, shipped v07-19 1.0.0 on the same day it launched on Product Hunt, got only 2 votes and finished #446 (producthunt database).

- 08-12 OpenAlternative auto-posted it on LinkedIn, when it had 72 stars (LinkedIn post). After that it barely moved for over two months: Trendshift logged daily gains of only 0–2 stars between 09-20 and 11-02; in our repo_day data it stayed at 74 stars from 10-28 to 11-03.

- **Spike** : by Trendshift's UTC days, 11-03 +278, 11-04 +117, 11-05 +76, 11-06 +19. Our snapshots use Beijing time: 11-04 342, 11-05 463, 11-06 538. The GitHub API read 564 stars and 12 forks on the evening of 11-06.

- The spike **started before** v2.0.0: v2.0.0 was released on 11-04 18:01 UTC, but pushed_at in the repo_day snapshot from 11-04 still reads 11-02. Reveneau's AI-written brief (11-03 04:45 UTC) says '137 stars', so the spike likely began late on 11-02 and into the early hours of 11-03 (UTC).

- Usage signals are weak: only 12 forks (about 2%), 0 watchers, and just 1 outside-filed issues seen (#1, 'import from Pipedrive'). Fork/star ratios for comparable CRMs usually sit around 15%–60% (Twenty 16%, Atomic CRM 64%, Krayin 7%).

- Not on GitHub Trending: in the github database's trending table, it appeared on neither the all-languages chart nor the TypeScript daily chart from 11-03 to 11-06. Yet during those days the lowest TypeScript daily entry gained only 9–18 stars in the period, and warpdrive's +268 in one day should have qualified. It also isn't in Trendshift's top 25 (the Trendshift page says 'Not in the Trendshift top 25'; Reveneau says it ranked #25, which contradicts this. Going with Trendshift).

### 2. Competitors

| Name | Where | When | Scale | How warpdrive differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pipedrive | SaaS | 2010 | An Estonian unicorn charging per seat; 2026-10-29 announced a 'major restructuring' and office closures (ERR News) | warpdrive is its open-source alternative, covering only the core BD circle |
| Twenty(twentyhq/twenty) | Open source | 2022-12 | 60.5k stars, 10k forks | Positioned as a Salesforce alternative, a general-purpose CRM, offered as SaaS; warpdrive explicitly targets only Pipedrive, is single-tenant, and includes two-way Gmail |
| Krayin(laravel-crm) | Open source | 2021 | 24k stars | A general PHP/Laravel CRM; warpdrive uses a modern TypeScript stack and copies Pipedrive's UI directly |
| Comp AI CRM(trycompai/crm) | Open source | 2026-07-31 | 11.9k stars | A 'CRM for AI agents' with a company and funding (Comp AI's September Series A of $34M); warpdrive is a personal project whose selling point is looking like Pipedrive |
| DeskcommCRM | Open source | 2026-04 | 5.2k stars | WhatsApp plus AI sales, competing with Kommo; multi-tenant |
| Atomic CRM(marmelab) | Open source | 2024-05 | 1.4k stars, 917 forks | A React + shadcn + Supabase CRM template aimed at developers who customize it; warpdrive is ready to run with docker compose |
| EspoCRM / SuiteCRM / frappe CRM / BottleCRM(Django-CRM) | Open source | 2013–2023 | 2.4k–5.8k stars | A long-established general CRM with full features but a dated UI; warpdrive wins on being newer and looking exactly like Pipedrive |
| sneg55/pingcrm (same author) | Open source | 2026-03 | 128 stars | A personal network CRM that got a Show HN post with lukewarm reception |

Takeaway: 'open-source CRM' is already crowded, with Twenty dominating. But **the exact phrase 'open-source Pipedrive' is nearly empty** : in OpenAlternative's Pipedrive alternatives page and ideaproof's '2 Open Source Pipedrive Alternatives', only this one positions itself specifically against Pipedrive.

### 3. Growth tactics (evidence found)

1. **Stuffed into alternative directories and awesome lists** (confirmed): the author opened PRs to awesome-foss-alternatives (#42), diegoleme/awesome-open-source-alternatives (#33), awesome-saas-directory (#27) and toolworks-dev/open-source-saas (#2) (GitHub PR search, author sneg55). He also maintains an awesome-open-source-crm list. OpenAlternative lists it and attaches it to several alternative pages (Attio, Pipedrive, Clay, Zoho), plus a 'Twenty vs Warpdrive' comparison. opensourcecrms.com, repocloud.io, softwaresuggest and technologycounter also list it.

2. **SEO on the website** (confirmed): the warpdrivecrm.com sitemap has only a few pages: the homepage, /vs/twenty, /vs/espocrm and /migrate-from-pipedrive, all targeting searches like 'Pipedrive alternative' and 'migrate from Pipedrive'. The homepage FAQ is formatted for AI search crawlers. The author previously ran curatedseotools (473 stars) and directory sites like DeFiprime.

3. **Product Hunt** (confirmed, no traction): launched 07-19, got 2 votes.

4. **Show HN** : warpdrive has never been posted. The author posted PingCRM to Show HN in March with lukewarm reception.

5. **Source of the 11-03 spike** (unconfirmed): no mentions on HN (Algolia full-text search and our database), X (x-radar real-time search for 'warpdrive', 'warpdrivecrm', 'sneg55' and 'open-source Pipedrive' each returned 0 results), Reddit, Bluesky or Product Hunt. The author's own X account (@sawinyh) has posted only agent engineering notes in the past two weeks and never mentioned warpdrive. Plausible sources: channels our search can't see, such as LinkedIn or Telegram, a newsletter or aggregator, or GitHub's homepage recommendation feed; star farming can't be ruled out. Signs pointing to star farming: forks at 2%, watchers at 0, and +268 in one day without making GitHub Trending. Signs against: the growth decays naturally, 278→117→76→19, and an AI news site like Reveneau picked it up within 11-03.

6. **Background events** (timing, weakly related): Pipedrive announced a restructuring and office closures on 10-29; Portuguese and Estonian media and job sites kept reposting coverage from 11-02 to 11-04. The same week, a Coolify author posted a self-hosted suite pitched as 'no per seat bs', with 1.7k likes (X @heyandras 11-04); someone in London also ran an 'anti per-seat pricing' seat-in (@ottilves 11-04). 'In the AI era, rewrite SaaS as open source, self-hosted, no per-seat pricing' is a real sentiment, but we found no evidence that any specific post sent traffic to warpdrive.

### 4. Why it took off (at this scale)

- **The name and positioning hit an empty search term exactly** : the title is literally 'Open-source alternative to Pipedrive'. Alternative directories index by 'open-source alternative to X', and the Pipedrive slot was nearly empty before, so it claimed the top spot immediately.

- **High product polish and convincing screenshots** : the README and site show screenshots from a live instance, plus a feature-by-feature table against Pipedrive that explicitly lists what it doesn't do. It went from v1.0 to v2.0 across 8 releases, shipped continuously (synced from an internal monorepo). It's a BD tool the author's company actually uses, not a toy.

- **v2.0 rode the AI angle** : it added an OAuth-protected MCP server (Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor can read and write pipelines directly, but not delete or send email) and imports Pipedrive CSV exports directly. Both features address people looking to move off Pipedrive.

- **The author knows distribution** : he comes from GTM and SEO, and the alternatives directory, awesome lists, comparison pages, migration pages and FAQ were all placed on purpose. But this playbook only got about 74 stars from 7 to October. The real spike came from an outside repost we didn't track down.

### 5. Differentiation

Compared with a general-purpose open-source CRM like Twenty, it isn't "stronger". It's **narrower and feels like one specific SaaS** : built only for BD teams, UI and concepts copied from Pipedrive, single-tenant self-hosting, Google Workspace login, two-way Gmail sync, and a ready-made migration path. That positioning has almost no competition in the "Pipedrive alternative" search slot and directory slots, which is why it got indexed and why AI news sites wrote about it. But differentiation alone doesn't explain the hundreds of stars it gained on 11-03. That needed an outside push, and we couldn't find it.

### 6. Visibility and copycats

- Visibility: **few people know about it yet** . It hasn't appeared on HN, big X accounts or tech media, and it hasn't made GitHub Trending. Only directory sites, an AI-written Reveneau brief, and an automated OpenAlternative LinkedIn post (417 followers) have mentioned it.

- Derivatives and follow-ons: KhademOHAli1/warpdrive (10-29 copy, not a fork, with 800 numbered-plan issues opened in a week, looks like someone using it as a base and building on it with an AI agent; 0 stars). cosark/warpdrive and luan-rgb/warpdrive-crm-academy are plain forks. Haven't seen an open-source HubSpot / Close / Attio alternative built on this pattern that actually gained traction yet.

### 7. What others can learn

- Pick a **well-known, per-seat SaaS that users are complaining about** , build "open-source alternative to X", put that name directly in the repo description and domain, then open PRs one by one on OpenAlternative and the various awesome-alternatives lists. The cost is low and the long-tail SEO keeps working.

- Open-source a tool your company actually uses. The screenshots are real, and completeness comes naturally.

- The website has only three kinds of pages: "vs competitor", "migrate from X", and FAQ, written specifically for Google and AI search crawlers.

- Ride an AI selling point (an MCP server) and add "one-click migration from X".

### 8. Still unclear

- The exact source of the spike between 11-02 and 11-03 (UTC). GitHub no longer lets you pull the stargazer list and timestamps even with a token, so we can't break it down by hour or by user profile.

- Whether stars were bought: forks and watchers are low and it hasn't made Trending, which is suspicious, but the evidence isn't enough.

- Actual deployments: there's no telemetry, so we can't see them. Outside issues number only 1.
