# A one-sentence-install video editing skill: editonny gained 760 stars in 18 days, thanks to the author's 590k followers, not the code

**What it is** A local Claude Code / Codex skill that lets an agent, given plain-language instructions, cut pauses and slips from talking-head footage, add subtitles, fix audio, change the aspect ratio and add motion scenes, all running on your own machine.

**Why it took off** The author has 590k followers on Instagram, and the repo got 131 stars overnight. On top of that, it installs with one sentence, the README is designed like an animated poster, and it ships in three languages. Reposter accounts on X and Facebook could paste it as-is, and it gained another 267 stars in three days while the repo sat idle.

**C** **How you could follow it** Don't build another general-purpose editing skill. Do the parts it does poorly (runs on Windows, fewer dependencies, handles long videos) or switch languages and narrow the use case, while copying its packaging: one-sentence install, README as poster, multiple languages, launched from your own account.

Grade C: the category already has 50+ similar projects with over 100 stars, and star counts depend mostly on whether the author brings an audience with them. Same-period projects with the same format and no audience stalled at a few hundred stars. What's worth learning is the packaging and distribution, and copying them alone isn't worth it. It's being talked about in small circles

Brazilian founder Matheus Gomes built a video editing skill for Claude Code / Codex. It hit 258 stars the day after the repo was created, then after 10 days of inactivity a reposter account pushed it up again, reaching 775 stars in 18 days. In the same month there were at least five or six skills of the same type, and each had only a fraction of its stars. The difference isn't the features. It's whether the author has an audience behind them and whether the repo is "ready to repost".

### A tweet that nearly copies the README

On 2026 Oct 30 10:45 (UTC), the reposter account 0xMarioNawfal (@RoundtableSpace) posted:

> Cutting pauses, fixing mistakes and adding captions to a talking video takes hours. Now you can just ask.

Below it was an introduction ending with the install instructions: "Paste this into Claude Code or Codex: Install the editonny skill from github.com/soumatheusgomes/editonny. Read skills/editonny/SKILL.md and follow its setup." That's essentially a condensed version of the "one-sentence install" section in the editonny README. A reply under the tweet said: "Local transcription and rendering is the right call. Uploading big raw talking-head footage just to trim a pause is where these tools lose users."

Two days later, on Nov 1, Chris Porter on Facebook shared it to "Vibe Coding for Beginners", a group he admins. The post opened with "🚨 This GitHub repo turns Claude Code and Codex into a local video editor you drive by describing the edit", and he added an ad for his paid community in the comments.

Before and after those two reposts, editonny's stars went from 402 on 10-31 to 669 on 11-03, up +267 in three days. The repo's last commit is Oct 21 — during this whole growth spurt, not a single line of code changed.

### What it is

A skill that runs on your machine. You point the agent at a folder of footage and say what you want in plain language: cut pauses, breaths and slips, add subtitles, fix audio, convert to vertical, turn a passage of speech into a motion scene. It first lists all the editing settings for your confirmation, then renders a 8–15 second sample for review, and finally exports an MP4 along with a verification checklist. Transcription and rendering both run locally, no API key is needed, and footage is not uploaded.

It ships with 145 motion scenes, 54 sample requests and 79 sample clips. The underlying renderer is hyperframes, HeyGen's open-source project (80k stars), plus FFmpeg and local transcription. It's MIT licensed, and the README reads "Free. Open. Forever."

### How the stars came

Daily stars (GitHub, recorded per day) fall into two clearly separate phases:

| Timeline | Stars | What happened |
|---|---|---|
| Repo created 10-19 | — | An AI video tools review site wrote that day: "editonny was created last night, and by this morning it already had 131 stars" |
| 10-21 | 258 (128 in a single day) | The launch peak, then a daily count of single digits to the twenties |
| 10-30 | 389 | Reposted by the X account 0xMarioNawfal |
| 11-01 → 11-03 | 457 → 576 → 669 | Reposted in a Facebook vibe-coding group, plus a dozen or so AI tool directory sites and automatic inclusion in GitHub's weekly trending |
| 11-06 | 775 (GitHub, real-time that day), 88 forks | Fell back to +13~+40 per day |

**The first phase came from the author himself.** Matheus Gomes's GitHub profile and the repo's homepage both point directly to his Instagram, which has 594k followers. His bio reads "Zerando o jogo do capitalismo no modo Hard" (beating capitalism on hard mode), and he takes brand deals. He used the same approach before with vibe-coding-toolkit (2.3k stars), and his repos total about 3.6k stars. Gaining 131 stars overnight only makes sense with an existing audience. We couldn't find which specific editonny post he made on Instagram (it requires login to view), so the attribution for this phase is an **inference** .

**The second phase came from reposter accounts, and they were willing to share because the repo was already a ready-made post.** Three design choices:

- **Installation is a single paragraph.** No cloning, no commands. Paste the English paragraph from the README to the agent, and it installs dependencies and runs its own self-check. This paragraph doubles as the repost copy, so reposter accounts can paste it as-is and readers can try it right away.

- **The README is designed like a poster.** 11 self-generated animated SVGs: a playhead sweeping across a timeline with four tracks for picture, voice, subtitles and motion; the same subtitle line in four different fonts; the same frame cycling through 9:16, 16:9, 1:1 and 4:5. The homepage shows three numbers you can count: 145, 54, 79. A reposter can screenshot one image and post it.

- **Three languages.** The README and the guide site are in English, Brazilian Portuguese and Spanish, so it reaches creators beyond the English-speaking world from launch day.

It's also important to be clear that the Facebook group post itself got only 3 reactions and 2 shares, which isn't enough on its own to account for the +119 on 11-02. The more likely explanation is an **inference** that the X tweet, group post, directory sites and weekly trending stacked together.

### Why others with the same thing only got a hundred or two hundred stars

"Letting coding agents edit video" was extremely crowded in the second half of 2026. Repos whose descriptions mention both video editing and agent / Claude / Codex / skill, and that passed 100 stars, were 11-06 with 50+ of them. A few representative ones:

| Project | Stars (11-06) | Compared with editonny |
|---|---|---|
| heygen-com/hyperframes | 79,455 | The underlying renderer that editonny uses |
| browser-use/video-use | 30,591 | A general-purpose agent editing framework |
| remotion-dev/skills | 6,409 | Procedurally generated animation, not editing real footage |
| kajisho5/ffmpeg-skill | 4,594 | 42 FFmpeg atomic tools |
| nateherkai/herk-edit-kit | 2,580 | Made by YouTuber Nate Herk, also a "creator + skill" model |
| appariciojunior/video-editor-skills | 414 | Same format, same period |
| kurbaitaev/ghost-editor | 225 | Same format, same period |
| riecodes/free247editor | 169 | Same format, same period: 10-19 and editonny were compared side by side in the same review |

The last three rows launched at almost the same time as editonny, with similar features, and their star counts were three to seven times lower. The herk-edit-kit row above shows the other side of the same conclusion: someone with an audience making a skill gets a star count an order of magnitude higher than an unknown developer. editonny's approval workflow and sample-confirmation steps helped it get picked in the review (that review concluded "pick editonny if you want cross-agent support"), but they don't explain the gap between 700 stars and 200 stars.

### Where it falls short

The author was busy on 10-20, closing the earlier issues one by one and replying "Fixed in …". Nothing has been touched since 10-21. As of 11-06, the repo has 12 open issues and PRs, and none of them have gotten a reply:

- **It basically doesn't run on Windows.** "1.1.0 on Windows: every transcription fails" (10-20), "Problemas do editonny no Windows" (10-28), "Windows: further problems in 1.1.0, with a tested patch" (10-30), "Run editonny and its checks on Windows" (a PR, 11-05). Someone added on 10-29 that they get the same error on Windows 11.

- **Long videos crash.** "compose_final: camera.zoom_cuts fails from 95 cut segments". With too many cut points, the FFmpeg expression gets too long.

- **People want more languages.** 11-01 Someone opened a PR to add Arabic to the landing site. It wasn't merged.

- **Heavy dependencies.** Python, uv, FFmpeg, Node 22 and OCR are all required. From the outside, there's no way to tell how many of the 88 forks actually got it installed and cut a video.

So its stars came from distribution, while maintenance has fallen behind. Users have already written down what's missing in the issues.

### If it were you

**C. You can learn something from it, but copying it as a clip-editing skill won't get you its star count.** This lane has 50 similar tools, and what decides the stars is whether the author has an audience, not the features. Someone without an audience building the same thing, compared with ghost-editor and free247editor from the same period, will most likely stall at a hundred or two hundred stars.

**Who it fits** : developers who already talk about AI or make content on Instagram, YouTube or TikTok and have tens of thousands of followers or more. Or people running a non-English creator community who can put a tool in front of thousands of people directly.

**Who it doesn't fit** : developers with no audience who expect "build it better and people will notice." Stars in this category don't go to quality. And anyone who wants to build a general clip framework to compete head-on with video-use and hyperframes.

**How to do it** : don't build another general talking-head clip skill. Two directions are more worth it. One is to do the parts it does poorly: run natively on Windows, install with half the dependencies, handle hour-long videos. The people in the issue tracker are your first users. The other is to change the audience: take the same playbook to languages it doesn't cover (Arabic, Indonesian, Japanese) or to narrower use cases (cutting podcast clips, course screen recordings, pulling highlights from livestream replays). Whichever you pick, copy its packaging: a paste-to-your-agent install line, the README built as a poster, a homepage with numbers you can count, multiple languages.

**How to get users** : launch first from your own account. The stars on day one decide whether you can make the weekly trending charts and directory sites. Within the first week, submit to AI tool directories and skill collections (awesome lists, skill directories). Write the install copy so it can be pasted as-is, so repost accounts on X and Facebook can share it unchanged.

**When to launch** : interest in "Claude Code video editing" ran from 2026-10 through November, and similar tools keep appearing every week. If you're going to do it, ship before December. The later you wait, the more crowded it gets.

**Signs I got this wrong** : (1) an author with no audience in editonny or a similar tool gets 1,000 stars within a month purely on the features (like Windows support or stable long videos). That would mean quality can earn stars too, the lane has room, and the grade should go up. (2) Anthropic or OpenAI release their own official video editing skill. Then stars in the whole category concentrate on the official one, and following it is worth less.

## Why editonny (soumatheusgomes/editonny) took off

> Source: GitHub · research day 2026-11-06 · Data: our github repo tables (repo_profile / repo_day), GitHub API, Jina / Exa / Brave search, TikHub

### One line

editonny is a **local video editing skill** for Claude Code and Codex. In plain language, you tell the agent to cut pauses and slip-ups, add subtitles, fix audio and change the aspect ratio, and it turns talking-head footage into motion-graphics scenes. Transcription and rendering both run on your own machine. It reached 760+ stars in 18 days. **The reason isn't technical lead** : the category already had video-use (30k stars) and hyperframes (80k stars). The real drivers were author Matheus Gomes' 590k-follower Instagram in Brazil and a 2.3k-star vibe-coding-toolkit that pointed people over. He also packaged the repo as a product that gets shared: a one-line install, an animated-poster README, a landing site, and three languages. That packaging is why X and Facebook repost accounts and AI tool directories were willing to promote it for free.

### 1. Data

- Our data: the repo was created 2026-10-19. As of 11-06 it had 761 stars and 86 forks (forks/stars about 11%, in line with the median for new repos of similar size, with no suspicious flags). The GitHub API showed 775 stars and 88 forks in real time that day.

- The curve has two phases (repo_day):
    - **Launch phase** : by 10-20 it had 130 stars. It went from 10-21 to 258 (+128 in a single day), then quickly dropped to single-digit gains per day. The article on thereelstack.com 10-19 says "editonny repo created last night, already 131 stars this morning."
    - **Second burst** : 10-31 is 402 stars, 11-01 to 457 (+55), 11-02 to 576 (+119), 11-03 to 669 (+93), then it cools off to +13~+40 a day. gain_7d 372, and the first 7 days were 58.

- The last push to the repo was on 10-21 03:51. **Not a single line of code changed** during the second surge, which means the growth came entirely from distribution.

- The same author's vibe-coding-toolkit only gained 11-01 between 11-03 and 26/11/14, with no matching surge. So the second surge was reposts aimed at editonny, not the author's main account pushing site-wide traffic (repo_day).

### 2. Where users come from (growth tactics)

| Channel | Evidence | Timeline | Confidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| The author's own audience (Instagram @matheusgomes 594k followers, 1,332 GitHub followers, vibe-coding-toolkit 2.3k stars) | The GitHub profile's blog field and the repo homepage both point to instagram.com/matheusgomes. The IG bio reads "Zerando o jogo do capitalismo no modo Hard" and links to brands like @asaas.brasil. The link goes to vibe-coding-toolkit (Jina read the IG profile, 2026-11-06). Getting 131 stars on day one only makes sense with an audience of the author's own. | 10-19~10-21 | Audience size is confirmed. **Not found** : which specific editonny post ran on IG. |
| Reposted by the big X account 0 xMarioNawfal (@RoundtableSpace) | The tweet read "editonny is a free video editing skill for Claude Code and Codex… Install it by pasting this into Claude Code or Codex…", posted at 2026-10-30 10:45 UTC (x.com/RoundtableSpace/status/2116119169431195713) | 10-30 | Confirmed |
| Facebook repost account Chris Porter (his profile + the "Vibe Coding for Beginners" group he admins) | The group post is timed "Sunday, November 1, 2026 at 1:11 AM" and opens with "🚨 This GitHub repo turns Claude Code and Codex into a local video editor…It's called editonny, from Matheus Gomes" (facebook.com/groups/vibecodingforbeginners/posts/1658447135837184/). There's also a repost by Matthew Galino. | 11-01 | Confirmed. Lines up with the peaks on 11-01~11-03. |
| AI tool directories / automated daily digests | thereelstack (10-19, a comparison of four agent editors), mindpattern.ai (10-20), agentsuses (10-23), a Portuguese review on reviewramble (10-31), githubsignals, rising.dev, the wo.com weekly chart 2026-W43, repoalerts, claudepluginhub, Context7, AgentLensHQ. ProSkillsMD 11-06 is a candidate. | From ¥10-19 | Confirmed (long-tail traffic) |
| YouTube automated compilations | Portuguese short video "Top 5 open source do GitHub Vol.13" (editonny ranks #5,473 by views); English daily "Just Commit — Oct 21: …editonny…" (58 views); "editonny: alternative to Descript Hobbyist" Shorts | Around 10-21 | Confirmed, but very small volume. |
| Reddit | Recall reasons mention someone reposting it on r/ClaudeCode. r/ClaudeAI has a post "I open-sourced the Claude Code skill I use to edit my own videos", but 403 can't be read, so I can't confirm it's editonny. | — | Not verified |
| TikTok | Searching "editonny" only turns up an unrelated account with the same name and one Vietnamese post, "Hand your video to Claude to cut" (429 views). No real TikTok distribution. | — | Essentially none |

No sign of paid acquisition, and no revenue to speak of (MIT license, README says "Free. Open. Forever.").

### 3. Competitors (all doing "let a coding agent edit video")

The space is very crowded. Our database has 50 repos with "video editing" and "agent/Claude/Codex/skill" in the description and ≥100 stars (github repos, 2026-11-06). The main ones:

| Name | Form | Launched | Scale (2026-11-06) | How editonny differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| heygen-com/hyperframes | Open source (HTML→video rendering for agents) | 2026-03 | 79,455 stars | hyperframes is the low-level renderer. editonny pins it to one specific version (commit log: "pin HyperFrames 0.8.179"). editonny is the finished workflow on top. |
| browser-use/video-use | Open source | 2026-04 | 30,591 stars | A general-purpose agent editing framework. editonny focuses on talking-head rough cuts, with a built-in asset library and confirmation flow. |
| remotion-dev/skills | Open source (official skill) | 2026-01 | 6,409 stars | Leans toward procedurally generated animated video. editonny leans toward editing real-person footage. |
| kajisho5/ffmpeg-skill | Open-source skills | 2026-09 | 4,594 stars | 42 FFmpeg tools, atomic capabilities. editonny is end-to-end and ships with 145 scenes. |
| nateherkai/herk-edit-kit | Open-source skill (YouTuber Nate Herk) | 2026-04 | 2,580 stars | **Same "creator + skill" playbook** , English audience. editonny adds Portuguese/Spanish and a guide site. |
| 0xsline/OpenChatCut, diffusionstudio/editor | Open-source editors | 2026-07 | 2.9k / 3.5k stars | Has a timeline UI. editonny has no UI, it's conversation only. |
| FireRed-OpenStoryline | Open source (from the RedNote FireRed team) | 2026-02 | 3,634 stars | An agent editor from a big-company team. editonny is a personal project and lighter to install. |
| dongnguyenvie/bashcut | Open-source native macOS editor + CLI/MCP | 2026-10-02 | 80 stars | bashcut has an undoable timeline. editonny is cross-platform and needs only one skill. |
| appariciojunior/video-editor-skills, kurbaitaev/ghost-editor, riecodes/free247editor, heditor | Open-source skills | 2026-09~10 | 414 / 225 / 169 / 107 stars | Same format, same period, fewer stars. The difference is that their authors didn't bring an audience. |
| AI editing in Descript, CapCut, Premiere | Commercial / big-company features | Years | Big | Those are cloud + subscription (repost accounts pitch "replace Descript Hobbyist $16/month" as the selling point). editonny is free and runs locally. |

### 4. Why it took off

1. **The author brings an audience.** A Brazilian founder with 594k Instagram followers, with the GitHub link right in his profile bio. He used the same playbook to build vibe-coding-toolkit (2,295 stars) and buscandomilhao (466 stars), about 3.7k stars combined across his repos. editonny got 131 stars on day one, while free247editor and heditor, same format and same period, have only a hundred or two combined.

2. **Packaged to be shared** . Three points:
    - Installation is one sentence: "Install or update the editonny skill… paste this request". Users don't download anything by hand. RoundtableSpace's tweet nearly copied this line word for word.
    - The README uses 11 animated SVGs the author generated as its poster (commit log: "rebuild README art, install request, and guide SEO").
    - The homepage sells with bold numbers: 145 motion scenes, 54 sample requests, 79 bundled assets. The README and guide site are also in English, Portuguese and Spanish. This is exactly the "screenshot + one paragraph" that repost accounts want.

3. **Hits a high-frequency pain point** . Cutting pauses, slips of the tongue and adding subtitles to talking-head videos is the most annoying job for most creators. "Runs locally, no uploads, no API key" also answers the cloud-tool privacy objection (a comment under a tweet: "local transcription and rendering is the right call…uploading it just to cut pauses is where these tools lose people").

4. **Amplified by repost accounts** . 10-30 On X, 0xMarioNawfal reposted it, and 11-01 Chris Porter on Facebook shared it into a vibe coding group. Those two line up with 11-01~11-03 gaining 267 stars in three days. By then the code had gone 10 days without an update.

5. **Good timing** . In the second half of 2026, "Claude Code for video editing" was a hot topic on YouTube and LinkedIn (Nate Herk, learnwithhasan, Portuguese-speaking creators posting "Claude Code + HyperFrames", Deborah Folloni's viral skill post). The demand was already there, and people were looking for "the one you can install right now".

### 5. Differentiation, and whether it's the reason it took off

As a product, it differs from its peers in these ways:

- One skill works with both Claude Code and Codex;

- Editing goes through an **approval workflow** : all editing settings are listed for the user to confirm, then a 8–15 second sample is rendered for review, and the export comes with a verification checklist. By default it leaves visuals, color and frame rate alone, and the original footage is untouched;

- Ships with 145 scenes and 79 bundled assets;

- Guide sites in three languages.

None of this is a moat, though. The underlying pieces (hyperframes, FFmpeg, whisper-style local transcription) are used by competitors too. **The main reason it took off is distribution, not differentiation** : the author's audience plus a one-line install and an animated README built for sharing. Differentiation helps it get picked (thereelstack's verdict was "if you want a cross-agent skill, pick editonny"), but it doesn't explain why it got 700 times more stars than ghost-editor and free247editor, which have similar features and only a hundred or two stars.

### 6. Visibility and copycats

- **Spreading in small circles** : on X, a large repost account (0xMarioNawfal) shared it, a Facebook vibe coding group passed it around, and a dozen or so AI directory sites auto-listed it. No tech outlet has formally covered it, and it hasn't hit HN. In our local x-radar corpus, searching "editonny" returns 0 results.

- Copycats: I haven't found any new repo copying it yet. diegolobatoceo/editonny and ALEXLDAS/editonny on GitHub are just forks. Meanwhile editonny itself was compared alongside bashcut, Yap and free247editor in the same thereelstack article on the same day, so it's one of a cluster of similar projects.

### 7. What others can borrow

- **Write the install step as a paragraph you can paste to an agent** : it's both the install method and ready-made share copy.

- **Build the README as a landing page** : animated SVG, a homepage with countable numbers (145/54/79), plus a guide site. Repost accounts can screenshot it and post right away.

- **Multilingual** , especially Portuguese and Spanish, reaches creator markets beyond the English-speaking world.

- **Put the GitHub link in a big account's bio** to convert fans on other platforms into stars.

- Same playbook, already proven by Nate Herk's herk-edit-kit (2.6k stars): a skill from a creator with an existing audience gets an order of magnitude more stars than the same thing from an unknown developer.

### 8. Still unclear

- I couldn't find whether the author posted about editonny on Instagram, in a post or Reel, or how much traffic that brought (IG content requires login). Attributing the launch burst to the author's existing audience is an inference.

- The GitHub stargazers endpoint returns 404 for this repo, so I can't get hourly star timestamps and can't match each spike to a specific post.

- I didn't read the r/ClaudeAI and r/ClaudeCode posts closely enough to tell whether the author posted them or how popular they got (403).

- Real usage is unclear. The skill has many dependencies (Python, uv, FFmpeg, Node 22, OCR), and how many people actually use it to cut footage after installing can only be roughly guessed from 8 open issues and a 11% fork rate.
