A single image turned into a 3D object you can rotate: a tiny two-person Spanish lab, 9 days, 830 stars, mostly earned for it by the ComfyUI community
What it is An open-source model and SDK: give it one image of an object and it generates a 3D Gaussian splatting file you can rotate through 360 degrees, with the back side filled in. It runs on a GPU with 7.2 GB of VRAM and is licensed for commercial use.
Why it took off Low barrier to entry (runs on a regular gaming GPU, pip install, you can try it with a click on the online demo), plus a comparison table showing it beating its predecessor TripoSplat. ComfyUI community nodes, an official ComfyUI package and a port to Apple MLX came out one after another, and each one got shared again within its own circle.
CHow you could follow it Don't train another model of the same kind. Instead, do the half it left undone (cleaning a splat into a proper mesh and texture, converting to a printable STL), or be first to build a ComfyUI node or MLX port within 48 hours of a new 3D model's release, and claim the name in that community.
- Data (updated daily) · Repo created 2026-10-28 · 885 stars · 7 days +578
GitHub · stars Data 2026-10-31 → 2026-11-08 (9 days, 9 observations). Points before 10-28 come from deeply / archive backfill, not every day has one
In 2026 Oct 28, Speridlabs, a small Spanish company calling itself a "spatial AI lab", released Idol: give it one picture of an object and it outputs a 3D Gaussian splatting (3DGS) model you can rotate through 360 degrees, with the back side that the photo never showed also filled in. The project page lists only two people, Alejandro Cañada and Chema Garabito. 9 days later, the GitHub repo speridlabs/idol-sdk had 830 stars and 73 forks, and the model on Hugging Face hit 2 on the site-wide trending board. This piece covers what it runs on, where the stars came from, and what you can learn from it if you want to build an open-source project that gets this kind of traction, and whether to follow it.
What it is
In short: a single image in, a 3D object out, as a standard 3DGS .ply file that any splat viewer can open.
The README's first paragraph is blunt: "It runs on consumer GPUs with 7.2 GB of VRAM." The pipeline automatically removes the background and frames the object, then uses a 370M-parameter diffusion model to generate 32,768 to 1,048,576 Gaussian points. Point count is a parameter: turn it down and the file is only 0.4 MB, turn it up and it's 12.2 MB. The "one dial controls detail" pitch was repeatedly quoted by news sites afterward.
Install is pip install, the license is Apache-2.0, and commercial use is allowed. The only hurdle is requesting access to two dependency models on Hugging Face first (Meta's DINOv3 and Black Forest Labs' FLUX.2 VAE).
The README also honestly says it's built on TripoSplat, which VAST open-sourced last June.
Five things shipped the same day
Idol didn't just drop a repo. 10-28 things went live that day:
- model weights on Hugging Face;
- a live demo (free HF GPU) with 93 preloaded sample images, one click to get a 3D model;
- an SDK you can pip install, plus a local Gradio UI;
- a gallery-style project page: a gingerbread house, roller skates, a red tulip chair, every one rotating;
- a comparison table putting its predecessor TripoSplat, Microsoft's TRELLIS, and the older LGM side by side, with Idol bolded in every column except PSNR.
That table became the main image for nearly every repost after. One caveat: the numbers in the table are their own tests, and the README's "under 2 seconds" claim doesn't match the 6.8 seconds on H100 in the table. comfyui-wiki pointed this out the same day. The gap is real, but not large.
How the stars grew
| Date | Cumulative stars | What happened those days |
|---|---|---|
| 10-28 | Repo created | Weights, demo, SDK and project page launched the same day; comfyui-wiki wrote it up that day |
| 10-29 to 10-30 | — | The first ComfyUI community node appeared; at least 5 more followed within two days; Chinese account @Gorden_Sun posted about it (8,121 views) |
| 10-31 | 186 | |
| 11-01 | 307 | Comfy-Org, ComfyUI's official org, packaged its own copy of the weights; AlphaSignal covered it |
| 11-02 | 487 | +180 in a single day, the peak day |
| 11-03 | 599 | An MLX port for Apple Silicon came out; @Stefan_3D_AI posted about it (29.5k views) |
| 11-06 | 830 | Daily gains fall back to 50–70 |
(GitHub daily snapshots; X view counts as of 11-06.)
The peak came the day after Comfy-Org's official packaging. The timing lines up, but there's no direct evidence the one caused the other (inference).
The more telling numbers are the ones outside GitHub: on Hugging Face the original model has 874 likes and 19,139 downloads. The Comfy-Org packaged version has 26,645 downloads, more than the original (HF, 11-06). fal.ai has also turned it into a pay-per-call API. So the GitHub stars are a byproduct of the HF and ComfyUI mainline, and most people actually using it aren't on GitHub.
Hacker News had one post, 2 points. There's a thread on Reddit's r/StableDiffusion, score not captured. No major influencer reposts seen.
Who spread it
The ComfyUI crowd. This was the biggest amplifier. People who play with Stable Diffusion and ComfyUI already have GPUs with around 12 GB of VRAM, and they'd long wanted a local image-to-3D tool. 7.2 GB of VRAM sits right in their reach. Someone wrote a ComfyUI node the day after launch, at least 6 within a week, and eventually ComfyUI's official org stepped in to package it.
Ports to other platforms. 11-03: Italian dev Ivan Fioravanti posted on LinkedIn and X that he had "quickly ported it to Apple MLX"; the same day @Stefan_3D_AI reposted it under the headline "The best local image-to-3D model now runs on Apple silicon," adding "peak around 8.6 GB, so a 16 GB Mac is enough." There's also a Rust version, a C# version, a CPU-only idol.cpp, a LichtFeld viewer plugin, and a small tool called splat2stl that turns splats into 3D-printable STL files. Every derivative project posted about it again within its own circle.
Auto-reposting news sites and accounts. comfyui-wiki, AlphaSignal (at least 3 articles), the Chinese site xiaohu.ai, the Japanese 3D news site izutsuya, and accounts like @HuggingModels that only repost HF trending charts. Secondary spread, but high volume.
Their own previous release. Three weeks earlier they'd shipped an image model, Iris-3B, and posted it on r/StableDiffusion. The Idol project page demos "Iris makes the image, Idol turns it into a 3D model", so the audience from the previous project became the first audience for this one (inference).
Who it's competing with
Single-image-to-3D is a crowded field:
| Project | Who made it | Scale (11-06) | Versus Idol |
|---|---|---|---|
| TRELLIS / TRELLIS.2 | Microsoft | 14k / 13k stars | Outputs mesh and splat in multiple formats, 4B model, heavier |
| SAM 3D Objects | Meta | 7,600 stars | Focused on objects in real-world scenes, heavier |
| TripoSR | Stability + Tripo | 7,300 stars | Older generation, outputs mesh |
| Hunyuan3D-2.1 | Tencent | 4,400 stars | Outputs textured mesh, license has regional restrictions |
| LGM | 3DTopia | 2,100 stars | Results in 1 seconds but blurry, up to 65k points |
| TripoSplat | VAST | 1,442 stars | Idol's predecessor, up to 260k points |
| Tripo, Meshy, Rodin | Commercial web | Paid | Closed source; Idol is free and runs locally |
Idol occupies a narrow niche: objects only, splat output only, low VRAM requirements, commercial use allowed, complete tooling. In 9 days it reached over half of its predecessor TripoSplat's star count after five months. The difference isn't the model. It's the package. TripoSplat was tossed out by a big company with nothing prepared for the community.
Where it falls short
A few public comments show the gaps still open:
- "How do you turn a radiance field into a clean mesh, with the baked lighting stripped from the textures?" (@rianflo on X, 11-03). Splats look great, but game engines, modeling software, and 3D printing mostly need meshes.
- "Does the back of the castle hold up after rotating 90 degrees? Single-image splats usually turn to fog right about there." (on X, @rath_abhishek99,11-03)
- Two dependencies require access requests, which turns some people away, and the code hasn't been pushed since 10-29.
If it were you
Verdict: It's worth studying how they launched it. Building yet another model head-on isn't worth it. Training a single-image-to-3D model takes research depth and compute, and the field is held by Microsoft, Meta and Tencent. Its stars were also earned by the HF and ComfyUI ecosystems, not organically on GitHub.
Good fit for: developers already known in circles like ComfyUI, Blender, 3D printing, or Apple MLX, who move fast and can plug a new model into their ecosystem within a day or two of release.
Bad fit for: solo builders trying to create a comparable model from scratch, or anyone counting on GitHub to recommend them on its own.
How to do it: two paths. One is to build the half it didn't do well: splat to clean mesh with lighting removed, splat to printable STL, batch-converting e-commerce photos into rotatable product 3D models. People are already asking for these in the comments, and they aren't tied to Idol, so they'd work with the next model too. The other is to watch new models and be the "first to integrate": when a new open-source 3D or image model drops, ship a ComfyUI node, MLX port or one-click installer within 48 hours. But expect modest star counts from single projects (the first ComfyUI-Idol node got 53 stars). You'll mostly earn a name in the community.
How to get users: put an animated GIF of "one input image + rotating result" on the first screen of the README; post to r/StableDiffusion, the ComfyUI Discord, and X accounts focused on 3D AI (like @Stefan_3D_AI, who reposts local 3D tools); host a demo on HF so people can try it without installing.
When to move: the sooner the better, measured in weeks. A new model's derivative window is usually one to two weeks after release. Tool windows like splat-to-mesh last longer, a few months (inference).
What would show you read it wrong: big labs' next versions like TRELLIS or Hunyuan output clean mesh and splat in one go; or Idol's downloads on HF stall two or three weeks out and the ComfyUI crowd moves on to a new favorite; or your derivative project goes out and nobody picks it up on r/StableDiffusion or in ComfyUI circles within a week.

Why speridlabs/idol-sdk (Idol: single-image to 3D Gaussians) actually took off
Research date 2026-11-06. Data card: 2026-10-28,9 days since creation, 830 stars, 73 forks, peak single-day gain +180 (11-02); the GitHub API showed 862 stars at time of research.
One line
An open-source single-image-to-3D Gaussian model from Speridlabs, a small Spanish research company (self-described "Spatial AI lab", authors Alejandro Cañada and Chema Garabito). In one release they shipped the model weights (HF), a Gradio live demo (HF ZeroGPU), a pip-installable SDK, and a comparison table against TripoSplat / TRELLIS / LGM. It's Apache-2.0 licensed and runs on a 7.2 GB consumer GPU. It then spread through the Hugging Face trending page, the ComfyUI ecosystem (an official Comfy-Org package plus a dozen-odd community nodes), AI news sites, and Chinese and English X reposting accounts. GitHub stars were a side effect of this Hugging Face-led push.
What it is
- You feed it one object image (a render, an AI-generated image, or a real photo). It removes the background automatically (BiRefNet), crops the framing, and uses a 370M-parameter DiT with an octree decoder and a Gaussian decoder (0.66B core in total) to generate 32,768 to 1,048,576 Gaussians. It also fills in the unseen back side and exports a standard 3DGS
.ply. - It depends on two models that require access approval: DINOv3 ViT-H+ and the FLUX.2 VAE. The full inference chain is about 1.8B parameters, with a peak VRAM use of 7.2 GB. About 4090 seconds on an RTX 19 and 100 seconds on an H6.7.
- The README states it was built on top of TripoSplat.

Bottom line: the single-image-to-3D space is crowded, with big companies and VAST both shipping open models. Idol occupies a small niche: object-level, outputs 3DGS directly, runs on consumer GPUs, is open and commercially usable, and comes with a comparison table that beats its predecessor TripoSplat.
Growth tactics (with evidence)
- Hugging Face-first launch: weights, a ZeroGPU demo (93 examples to try with one click), the SDK and the project page all shipped the same day. 19k downloads and 874 likes on HF, pushing it to #2 on the site-wide trending list. The HF trending page is itself a distribution slot, and accounts like @HuggingModels repost models from it.
- AI news sites and X repost accounts: comfyui-wiki wrote about it the day it launched, AlphaSignal ran several pieces, Chinese accounts Gorden_Sun and xiaohu.ai covered it, Japan's izutsuya did too, and automated reposting accounts like r/BestGitHubRepos picked it up. All of this is second-tier spread. I found no evidence of top-tier big accounts (AK, the official HF account, etc.) retweeting it (unverified).
- Audience built by the company's earlier work: Iris-3B, released three weeks earlier (223 GitHub stars, 345 HF likes), had been posted on r/StableDiffusion. The Idol project page also directly demonstrates the "Iris image → Idol 3D" combo.
- HN didn't help: only 2 points.
- No sign of paid promotion or star farming: stars and HF metrics rose together, and the fork ratio is normal (about 9%).
Why it took off
- Low barrier, people can play with it right away: 7.2 GB of VRAM, Apache-2.0, pip install, a live demo. The 12 GB GPUs that ComfyUI and SD users already own can run it, and the HF likes and downloads are the proof.
- It has a predecessor and beats it: building on TripoSplat and beating it on every metric except PSNR, while also being faster, makes for an easy story. Nearly every news site repeated that comparison table.
- Adjustable detail: one parameter scales the Gaussian count from 32K to 1M, with files ranging from 0.4 MB to 12.2 MB. The "one dial" selling point was cited repeatedly by comfyui-wiki and others.
- ComfyUI community nodes and official packaging are relaying the distribution, pushing it past GitHub to HF and the whole Comfy user base. 11-02's star peak followed right after the Comfy-Org release.
- Timing: 3DGS became a common format, with browsers and LichtFeld able to view it directly. The Comfy community was looking for local image-to-3D, and TripoSplat had just educated the market (radiancefields and OTOY both published TripoSplat tutorials).
Differentiators and whether they explain the success
There are three differentiators: a higher Gaussian ceiling that can be tuned, low VRAM requirements, and a permissive commercial license, plus out-of-the-box engineering polish (SDK, demo, sample images, multi-GPU timing tables). It took off mainly because of engineering polish, the low barrier, and the handoff to the Comfy ecosystem, not a fundamental algorithmic breakthrough. It admits it was built on TripoSplat, its comparison data is all self-reported, and comfyui-wiki has already pointed out that the "under 2 seconds" claim doesn't match its own table. So the differentiation is real but thin. Similar models didn't get this many stars because TripoSplat was a big company's side project with no community-focused bundle like this.
Copycats / derivatives
No copycat models have appeared, but the derivative ecosystem moved fast: the official Comfy-Org/Idol package, 6+ ComfyUI nodes, lyehe/lichtfeld-idol-plugin, idol-rs (Rust inference), idol-csharp, idol.cpp (a CPU-distilled version), splat2stl (converts splats to printable STL, 11-01); fal.ai also added a hosted API.
What others can borrow
- Ship the model together with the weights, a live demo, a pip SDK, a comparison table against the predecessor and top rivals, and GPU timing tables for each model size, all on the same day, and state the minimum VRAM plainly.
- Use a permissive license and welcome ComfyUI integration: community nodes and official packaging will distribute for you, and their downloads may end up exceeding your own.
- Run serial releases (Iris-3B for images, then Idol for 3D), so the audience from the previous work cold-starts the next one.
Still unclear
- The Reddit post scores and comment counts (blocked by a captcha); whether any official HF account or top-tier AI figure reposted it.
- Whether the self-reported benchmarks reproduce; how the two gated dependencies affect real-world usage.
- The last code push was 10-29, with no updates since, so whether it can be maintained over time is unclear.
- Speridlabs funding and commercialization (the site lists a "Platform" and a 3D world model not yet released).
