# "Zombies Moved Into Your House": KnoxMap downloaded 30k times but only earned 300 stars

**What it is** A free desktop tool. Enter a real address and it auto-generates a Build 42 map for Project Zomboid from OpenStreetMap, with walkable interiors, furniture, and zombies, then installs it into the game.

**Why it took off** It's the first tool to make "fighting zombies in my own house" actually playable, and it arrived in a gap when older tools broke after the Build 42 update. The author launched on Reddit, pointed people to a small Workshop mod, and Russian and Spanish TikTok creators spread it organically.

**B** **How you could follow it** Don't build another PZ version. Pick a game with a mod ecosystem that just had a major update and where hand-building maps is tedious, and build "one-click playable maps of real places." The first version has to let you walk into your own home. Launch on Reddit and use a small Workshop mod to funnel players to GitHub.

Grade B: "real world into the game" stars have been repeatedly proven by PZ, BeamNG, and Minecraft, and the playbook is clear. But PZ is already taken, switching games means a lot of specialized engineering, and players rarely click star. 30k downloads produced only 300 stars, which is clearly an inefficient way to earn stars. Being talked about in small circles

Data (updated daily) · Repo created 2026-09-15 · 327 stars · 7 days +94

GitHub · stars

Data 2026-10-09 → 2026-11-08 (31 days, 31 observations). Points before 10-28 come from deeply / archive backfill, not every day has one

KnoxMap is a free desktop tool. Enter your home address and it reads the streets and buildings from OpenStreetMap, generates a Project Zomboid map you can walk into with furniture and zombies, then installs it straight into the game. In 52 days it was downloaded about 30k times, yet only 300 people starred it, because the people using it are players, not developers. The "real world + game mod" route to stars has been proven several times, but it's inefficient, the engineering load is heavy, and you have to claim a specific game before others do.

### A Russian video, 240k views

In 2026 Oct 29, a Russian gaming account on TikTok called krasnenkiy_sashka8 posted a video captioned:

> 😱 ТВОЙ ДОМ теперь может оказаться в Project Zomboid! (Your house can now appear in Project Zomboid!) ... Imagine having to survive on your own street. Could you hold your own house?

By Nov 6 the video had 246k views and 26k likes. The next day the gaming news account igrogamenews covered it with "Fans taught Project Zomboid to bring any real city into the game," 69k views. GitHub stars went from 10-27 on 122 to 10-31 on 220, peaking at +51 in a single day. The same week someone submitted a Russian-language UI translation (PR #49, #58), and Russian players reported a bug where Cyrillic street names wouldn't display.

A week later a Spanish wave arrived: luis_gamingg posted on Nov 5 "Tu CIUDAD REAL en Project Zomboid… Se llama KnoxMap" (Your real CITY in Project Zomboid… It's called KnoxMap), with the caption "Pick any place in the world, it sets streets, buildings, and zombies according to how many people live and work there, and it's free." By 11-06 it had 380k views and 56k likes, and stars rose by +20 that day. A Portuguese (Brazil) UI translation PR followed.

The author paid for neither wave, and no paid-promotion trace shows up. It looks like creators found it on their own (inference).

### What it actually does

Project Zomboid is a zombie survival sandbox set in the fictional Knox County, Kentucky, which is where the name KnoxMap comes from. For years, players have asked the same question: can my house be put in the game? The official map editors (WorldEd / TileZed) exist, but hand-building even a small town takes dozens to hundreds of hours, so most players never do it.

KnoxMap turns this into four button presses. The README flow: type "your street and house number" in the home box and hit enter → pick "town / suburb / city / countryside" → then click **Generate ▶ Build ▶ Compile ▶ Install ▶** in turn. The generated map has:

- Roads laid at real widths, with sidewalks, curbs and center lines; parked cars, and gas stations you can fill up at;

- Every building sits on its real footprint and you can walk inside: houses have bedrooms upstairs, apartment blocks have corridors, and the building tagged as a pizza place on OSM has a restaurant plus a pizza kitchen inside;

- Up to 31 floors, and buildings five stories and up have working elevators;

- Zombies spawn according to the residents and workers estimated for each building; the paper map you open with M shows the real street names.

It's also packaged for players who aren't technical: on Windows you double-click the exe, and if Python isn't on the machine it downloads one automatically. Game assets are copied from the copy of the game the player already owns; the tool ships with no game files, and every map gets an OSM attribution automatically. That holds up on copyright, so it's less likely to get removed from Reddit and Steam.

### Why this one, and why now

**Earlier attempts were only half-finished.** Others had the same idea before: Knoxify (arytek) converts OSM into terrain base maps the editor can read, 18 stars so far; Pz-RealLifeMap only outputs simplified maps and vegetation maps, 32 stars. Both stop at "you can look at it", and you still have to go into the editor and build the houses yourself. KnoxMap builds on Knoxify and fills in building interiors, zombies, compiling and installing, taking it all the way to "you can play it". Only at that point can a blogger film the "I walked into my own house" scene, and that's when the hook actually pays off.

**It rode a major game update.** At the end of 2026 July, Build 42.20 reworked the map system, many old maps and tools stopped working, and for a while the community had no tool that could make B42 maps. KnoxMap put "Build 42" in the most visible spots: the repo description, the tags and the Workshop page.

**Updates are absurdly fast.** From 9-16 to 11-06 it shipped 72 versions, about one a day. The second core developer, thehorseofcourse45, made 232 commits, and the author himself made 247; he also wrote a separate map compiler in Rust that doesn't need WorldEd. Every new wave of people who arrive sees "updated yesterday".

### Where players come from

| Timeline | What happened | Scale |
|---|---|---|
| 9-16 | The author posted in r/projectzomboid (480k subscribers): "made a tool that turns real places into b42 maps" | First wave |
| 9-23 | The same subreddit got "KnoxMap steam workshop page is officially out!" | 1.3K upvotes, 170 comments |
| From ¥9-23 | A companion small mod was published on the Steam Workshop | 10,306 cumulative subscriptions (Steam, 11-06) |
| 9-27 | A small game site wrote it up, and it was machine-translated into about ten languages | Small volume, but it gave long-tail search |
| By 10-17 | — | 110 star |
| 10-29 ~ 31 | Russian TikTok | 246k + 69k views, stars 113 → 220 |
| 11-05 ~ 06 | Spanish TikTok | 380k views, 11-06 +20 that day |
| 11-06 | — | About 300 stars / 46 forks (GitHub, 11-06) |

The Workshop move is the one most worth copying. The Workshop doesn't allow exes, so the author published a side feature of the tool (resetting loot on generated maps) as its own mod, titled "KnoxMap - real places, playable (Reset loot)", with "Get it from GitHub: …/releases/latest" in the description. PZ players browse the Workshop every day, so this mod works as a signpost planted there.

In early November, a TikTok video of the whole US mainland being loaded into Project Zomboid (the Real USA map, top video 820k views, workshop subscribers 31k) went viral and pulled the whole "real world in PZ" topic along with it. Real USA uses several of the same data sources as the PR that merged KnoxMap 11-04: ESA WorldCover, USGS 3DEP, Natural Earth, HIFLD and NOAA. The page doesn't mention KnoxMap, and whether the two are related is **unverified** .

### 30k downloads, 300 stars

Installers across 72 versions were downloaded roughly 31,500 times in total (counting repeat downloads and upgrades; real users are likely in the thousands to ten thousand), the Workshop mod has 10k cumulative subscriptions, yet stars are only around 300. Players come to GitHub just to grab the exe, and only about one in a hundred stops to click star.

That's the ceiling for this kind of project: you earn fame within a game's community, not among developers. There's no discussion of it on X, and it has never appeared on HN or Product Hunt. Fork/star reaching 16% is because people are really submitting PRs (almost daily since late October), which is a very healthy signal on GitHub.

Compare the similar BeamNG.Earth: it streams the whole Earth into the driving game BeamNG.drive by 1:1. It was built in 10-10, reached 1,700 stars in a month, and players picked it up casually. Earlier still, Minecraft had the open-source Arnis doing the same thing (generating Minecraft worlds from OSM), with tens of thousands of stars (estimate; I didn't verify the same-day numbers). The same approach gets as many stars as the game has players, and as many as are willing to tinker with mods.

### Copycats have arrived, but none took off

- osm2zomboid (10-16): the description is nearly copied, "Turn any real place into a playable Project Zomboid (Build 42) map from OpenStreetMap", 0 stars, and it stopped updating a day later.

- SimplePZMapmaker (10-11): a visual editor with OSM import, 0 stars.

- KnoxMapper (crufro): a manual map editor in the browser; its TikTok teaser got 90k views and it's still "coming soon", recruiting beta testers.

On the PZ track KnoxMap is already working end to end and two core developers are updating it daily, so building a PZ version on the same playbook has no real chance.

### If it were you

**One-line verdict:** "Put real places into a game" has already proven it can earn stars (PZ, BeamNG, Minecraft), but PZ's spot is taken; if you follow it, pick another game, and aim for "playable", not just "viewable".

**Who it suits:** people who already play a game with a mod ecosystem, know a bit of GIS or OSM data, and are willing to ship nearly every day for several months. What you're after is fame in one game community, plus a project with real users as a side effect.

**Who it doesn't suit:** anyone who wants stars from developer circles or wants the project to hit the HN or X front page. Players don't click star; 30k downloads bring in 300 stars. It's also not for people who just want to hack on it on weekends, because the difficulty lies in the long engineering stretch behind the surface.

**How to do it:**

1. Pick the game. It needs three things: a large player base, a map or mod ecosystem, and official hand-made maps that are laborious to build, ideally with a major version that just broke the old tools. First search GitHub and that game's Workshop for "OSM", "real world" and "real life map" to confirm no end-to-end tool exists yet. Survival, sandbox, simulation and driving games fit best.

2. Use an existing foundation when you can. KnoxMap was built on Knoxify; the README states "built on Knoxify", and the original author later submitted 16 commits too.

3. The first version must let people "walk into their own house". That single image is what the bloggers need for their videos.

4. Make the install a double-click, copy game assets from the player's own machine, ship no game files, and include the OSM attribution.

**How to get users:** first post in the game's subreddit with "I made a tool that turns real places into XX maps"; put a companion small mod on the Workshop that points to GitHub Releases; leave room for multiple languages from the start, so when Russian, Spanish and Portuguese bloggers come calling, local players will volunteer translations.

**When to do it before others:** the closer to a major update of the target game the better, since the first two or three months after an update are a gap in tooling.

**Signs you've misread it:** the first Reddit post doesn't reach a few hundred upvotes; or a month after launch you have a thousand downloads but fewer than 50 stars, meaning the game's community is too small or its players don't download from GitHub; or the game itself adds an "import real maps" feature.

## Why KnoxMap (spytheeuclidean-a11y/knoxmap) took off

> Research date 2026-11-06. Channel: GitHub. Data card: 280 stars (GitHub API already showed 300 that day) / 46 forks, repo age 52 days, last 7 days +111 (prior 7 days +57), single-day peak +51 (2026-10-31).

### One line

KnoxMap is a Windows/Linux/macOS desktop tool: you draw a real place on a map, it pulls streets, buildings and water from OpenStreetMap, then auto-generates a Build 42 <i>Project Zomboid</i> map mod with furniture, lights, stairs and zombie spawns, and installs it into the game. Its stars don't come from developers. They come from **players** . Players can only download the tool from GitHub Releases, so every wave of game-community buzz also drops stars on GitHub.

### 1. Data: how many people actually use it

| Metric | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| GitHub star / fork | 300 / 46(2026-11-06) | GitHub API |
| Cumulative downloads across all Release assets | **About 31,500 downloads** (72 releases, single 1.8.x versions at 1–2.4k each) | GitHub API releases |
| Companion Steam Workshop mod "KnoxMap - real places, playable (Reset loot)" | Current subscribers 8,312, total subscriptions 10,306, favorites 1,685, views 44,454 (2026-09-23 listed) | Steam GetPublishedFileDetails API |
| Release cadence | 2026-09-16 to 11-06 saw 72 releases, almost one a day | GitHub releases |
| Contributors | The author made 247 commits, thehorseofcourse45 (SolarisMare) 232, lfdelphino 21, and original Knoxify author arytek 16, plus Russian and Portuguese translation contributors | GitHub contributors |

So stars (300) sit far below real users: 30k downloads and 10k Workshop subscriptions, and only a small share of players bother to star. Forks/stars at about 16% mostly come from people actually submitting PRs (PRs have arrived daily since late October, see issues #47–#76).

### 2. Competitors: who else does the same thing

| Name | Where | Launched | Scale | How it differs from KnoxMap |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Knoxify(arytek/knoxify) | Open source | 2026-04-23 | 18 star | The foundation KnoxMap builds on. It only rasterizes OSM into BMPs WorldEd can read (terrain, roads, water, building outlines). You still have to hand-build interiors in WorldEd/BuildingEd and compile. KnoxMap adds building interiors, furniture, zombies, compiling and installing on top, end to end in one click. |
| Pz-RealLifeMap(SadPeanut) | Open source | 2025-06 | 32 stars, has a PZwiki entry | Only generates a "simplified map + vegetation map" for WorldEd. Build 41 era, no enterable buildings. |
| KnoxMapper(crufro) | Web app (knoxmapper.com, not live) | Announced 2026-09 | TikTok creator crufro's 9-08 video at 170k views and 9-30 video at 90k views; YouTube alt account British__Badger 9-11 made a dedicated walkthrough | A browser-based hand-drawn map editor (draw walls, place furniture, custom textures). Just "coming soon" plus a beta sign-up; it does not auto-generate from real places. |
| osm2zomboid(jinxlover) | Open source | 2026-10-16 | 0 star | The description nearly copies KnoxMap ("Turn any real place into a playable Project Zomboid (Build 42) map from OpenStreetMap", MIT). Updates stopped a day later. |
| SimplePZMapmaker(DinLemon) | Open source | 2026-10-11 | 0 star | Visual map/building editor with OSM import and MCP agent tools, more of an editor. |
| Real USA(MaQari) | Steam Workshop maps | 2026-10-29 | Current subscribers 31,168, total 36,744, 1,675 ratings. TikTok "whole USA entered PZ" videos at 11-03/04k, 820k and 430k views, 200k total. | It's not a tool, it's a finished "US mainland 48-state 1:40" map. The data layers (OSM, ESA WorldCover, USGS 3DEP, Natural Earth, HIFLD, NOAA) match exactly what the KnoxMap 11-04 merge in PR #69 "Optional enrichment data layers (WorldCover, 3DEP, Natural Earth, HIFLD, NOAA)" lists. Whether it was built with the KnoxMap pipeline is **unverified** , since the page doesn't mention KnoxMap. |
| Infinit-Z / Ungodly Random Map Generator | itch.io / Workshop | 2025–2026 | Small | Random/procedural fictional maps, not real places |
| Official tools WorldEd / TileZed + PZ_Mapping_Tools (Unjammer, 2026-07,28 stars) | Official / open source | Years | Used mainly by veteran mappers | Entirely manual; one town map takes dozens to hundreds of hours. KnoxMap auto-downloads PZ_Mapping_Tools during setup as a compile dependency. |

Bottom line: before KnoxMap, "real place → PZ map" existed only as half-finished work (terrain BMPs). No tool produced a complete map you can **actually play, walk into buildings with rooms and furniture** . KnoxMap is the first end-to-end one in this category.

### 3. Growth levers: where users came from (by time)

1. **Reddit r/projectzomboid (480k subscribers), posted by the author** : "made a tool that turns real places into b42 maps" (2026-09-16) and "Knoxmap is out."; "KnoxMap steam workshop page is officially out!" (2026-09-23) **1.3K upvotes, 170 comments** (Brave search summary). This was the first wave, taking stars to about 110 (110 when we indexed on 10-17).

2. **Small-site media** : Fix Gaming Channel 2026-09-27 wrote a piece, and it was machine-translated into about a dozen languages including Chinese, Portuguese, Spanish, French, Vietnamese, Korean and Arabic (Exa search). Small reach, but it gave long-tail SEO.

3. **A small "Reset loot" mod on Steam Workshop as the distribution entry point** : Workshop doesn't allow hosting exes, so the author listed a useful side feature from the tool as its own mod, with the description pointing to "Get it from GitHub: …/releases/latest". 10k cumulative subscriptions means a signpost placed where PZ players browse every day. This is the most worth copying move here.

4. **Russian TikTok wave 2 (10-27 → 10-31 stars, 113 → 220)** : krasnenkiy_sashka8 10-29 posted "😱 ТВОЙ ДОМ теперь может оказаться в Project Zomboid! Новый инструмент KnoxMap…"246k views / 26k likes; gaming news account igrogamenews 10-30 followed up with 69k views (TikHub). The same week, a Russian UI translation PR appeared on GitHub, #49 (10-30) and #58 (10-31), and Russian users filed issues (#54, #63, a Cyrillic map-label bug). Around the same time, a third party posted "Play inside your real home in Project Zomboid" on Reddit (about 10-30; Brave shows "1 week ago"). A single-day +51 (10-31) landed right here.

5. **Spanish TikTok, third wave** : luis_gamingg posted "Tu CIUDAD REAL en Project Zomboid… Se llama KnoxMap" on 11-06, 370k views / 55k likes (TikHub), and the same day stars rose +20. In the same period lfdelphino submitted a Portuguese (Brazil) UI PR, #74, on GitHub.

6. **Tailwind from the "whole USA" craze** : starting 11-02, "Real USA" map videos flooded TikTok (800k scale), lifting the whole "real world goes PZ" topic. KnoxMap was the only tool in that topic letting players build <i>their own</i> home. The relationship between the two is unverified.

Not found: paid ads, X retweets from big accounts (x-radar library: 60 posts in 0 days), HN/Product Hunt (only 61 upvotes on the Nicheloom aggregator).

### 4. Why it took off

- **It hit an old itch: "zombies in my house."** The PZ community has long asked "can you put my home in the game?", but hand-building maps has a huge barrier. KnoxMap cut it to "enter an address → press one button four times." Every viral video's title says the same thing: "your house/your city is in PZ now". The emotion spreads on its own.

- **Timing: Build 42 had just reshaped the map system.** 42.20 (2026-07-30) brought a big Knox Country overhaul, and old B41 maps and tools broke widely. The community lacked something that could produce B42 maps. KnoxMap's name, README and Workshop tags all pin "Build 42", aiming straight at that gap.

- **It made the game playable, not just viewable.** Predecessors Knoxify and Pz-RealLifeMap only produced terrain base maps. KnoxMap added building interiors (rooms for pizza shops, banks, pharmacies, generated from OSM shop types), stairs, elevators, cars, gas stations, zombies distributed by population density, an in-game paper map, and automatic compile and install. Only at this level can a video creator film the "walking into my house" shot.

- **Iteration speed + a second core developer.** 72 releases in 52 days; thehorseofcourse45 contributed 232 commits and separately wrote a Rust compiler that skips WorldEd (worlded-rusted). Every new traffic wave sees "it was updated yesterday," and bugs get fixed fast.

- **Distribution designed for players.** On Windows you double-click an exe, and if Python is missing it downloads one automatically. Users' game assets are copied locally, so no game files are redistributed, which sidesteps copyright. Each map ships with an OSM attribution file. This makes it less likely to be taken down on Steam or Reddit, and lets non-programmer players actually get it running.

- **Multilingual community spread on its own.** The Russian and Spanish TikToks were organic traffic, not paid placement. Local players soon contributed translations, forming a positive loop.

### 5. Differentiation, and whether that's why it took off

The differentiator = **one click from a real place to a complete playable map: enterable buildings, loot, zombies, installed** . Rivals either produce only terrain (Knoxify, Pz-RealLifeMap), are hand-built editors (KnoxMapper, WorldEd), or are someone else's finished fixed product (Real USA). Only KnoxMap lets you build <i>your own street</i>.

Yes, that's exactly why it took off: the viral hook "your home is in the game" can only be delivered by this tool. Knoxify had the same idea but only 18 stars; the difference is the large engineering chunk that makes it playable.

### 6. How many people have seen it

**It's spreading in small circles.** Basis: a 1.3K-upvote PZ Reddit post, Russian/Spanish TikToks with hundreds of thousands of views, and one small game site's coverage. No major media, no X discussion found, no HN/PH. Open source and free, so there is no public revenue. Copycats have appeared but none took off (osm2zomboid, SimplePZMapmaker at 0 stars), and the adjacent Real USA finished map has actually been more popular than KnoxMap (31k subscribers).

### 7. What others can learn

- The "game + real-world data (OSM)" combination: any game with a mod ecosystem and expensive manual map-making (sandbox, survival, simulation) can offer "put your home in the game," and the hook suits short video naturally.

- If the Workshop won't host the tool, host a small useful mod that comes with it as the entry point and route traffic to GitHub Releases.

- The name directly borrows the game's world (Knox County → KnoxMap), so players instantly know which game it's for.

- Put the version number and "Build 42" at the most visible spot early on, targeting the tool vacuum right after a major game update.

### 8. Still unclear

- Whether Real USA is based on KnoxMap is unverified (its data layer list matches PR #69 exactly, but no credit is given). Whether MaQari and thehorseofcourse45/SolarisMare are the same person is also unverified.

- Whether the Russian-language TikTok creator has any link to the author (looks like organic reach, not verified).

- Day-by-day star curve for the September first wave (our database only has data from 10-28 onward; the stargazers API didn't return data this time).

- Actual players who made it and played: 30k downloads include repeat downloads and multiple version updates, so real unique users are probably in the thousands to ten-thousands range (compare the workshop's 10k cumulative subscribers).
