CADCraft: a "free AutoCAD" that picked up 30 days, 7695 stars, but most of the stars came from the parent brand
What it is A free, open-source drafting app that copies AutoCAD's controls. Written in Rust, it opens DWG/DXF files, and AI agents can draw through MCP.
Why it took off It's one of the products in ArtCraft's "clone Adobe / Office / AutoCAD" lineup. The parent brand's surge on HN, in the media, and on X pulled it up with it, and foreign repost accounts then spread it with the "free AutoCAD" hook.
CHow you could ride it Stop building open-source AutoCAD clones. Pick an expensive professional app with no decent open-source alternative that ArtCraft hasn't built yet, keep the existing users' workflows intact, add an agent interface, and promote it through non-English repost accounts and niche communities.

Early on 2026 Oct 5 (UTC), ArtCraft's founder replied under a 180-point Hacker News thread: "I'm going to do Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, and Solidworks too." Two days later, on Oct 7, CADCraft's repo was created, the same day as the Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Pro Tools clones. By Nov 6 it had 7695 stars and 3286 forks. It's an open-source CAD app written in Rust that copies AutoCAD's controls. But among the same company's 16 "XXXCraft" repos, it ranks only 10th by stars, and its single-day peak fell on the same day as its sibling repos. Anyone chasing stars can't learn from its "build a CAD app" part. What they can learn is how one brand launches a whole product suite at once.
What it is
A free AutoCAD-style drafting app, dual-licensed Apache-2.0 / MIT, with no account required. The README's first line reads "modern 2D and 3D CAD application, built in pure Rust." It pitches four things:
- Old habits still work: type
L, click twice, enter@5<45, hit Enter. The command line, object snaps, layers, dimensions, hatches, and blocks are all built to feel like decades of AutoCAD use. - Opens your drawings directly: native DXF read/write, DWG read/write via the open-source acadrust library, and export to PDF, SVG, and PNG.
- Native, cross-platform: pure Rust with egui, no Electron. Runs on macOS, Windows, Linux, and FreeBSD, plus a WebAssembly build in the browser.
- "Built for agents": every menu item is a command, so AI agents can draw through MCP, JSON, or the CLI, and check their own output.
The README's first screen is a full apartment floor plan: wall hatching, doors and windows, furniture, a room-area table, and architectural dimensions. The author labels the project "early development" in a status table, and the ROADMAP lists percent-complete against AutoCAD. Most of the code was written by AI coding agents, with humans reviewing and merging. The repo ships AGENTS.md and CLAUDE.md, and CodeRabbit reviews PRs automatically. In 30 days it shipped 16 releases, opened 1702 PRs, and merged 935 of them (GitHub, 11-06).
How the stars climbed
| Date | star | What happened those days |
|---|---|---|
| 9-30 to 10-06 | — | ArtCraft launched 7 Adobe clones in one go. The founder posted to r/Adobe and r/SaaS: "I rewrote 7 top Adobe apps in pure Rust with Opus 5.5". On HN one post got 180 points and 246 comments (10-04), another 144 points (10-06). Media like techaeris and tedium followed. |
| 10-07 | Repo created | Created the same day as WordCraft, GridCraft, DeckCraft, and SoundCraft |
| 10-09 | 719 | Chinese-language repost account @QingQ77 (10-08,127 likes) and Arabic-language account @Sn0wbrave (10-09,332 likes, 18k views, aimed at "people who draw engineering drawings and look for open-source AutoCAD alternatives") started sharing it |
| 10-11 to 10-12 | 1706 → 2345 | An HN post "Microsoft Word clone in pure Rust" got 101 points. On X a "whole suite" post appeared, with @0xCodila writing "cancel my roughly $1500 subscription", 318 likes |
| 10-13 | 3217 (+872, peak) | Its single-day peak fell on the same day as the main ArtCraft repo's and those of WordCraft, GridCraft, DeckCraft, and SoundCraft |
| 10-14 to 10-16 | Daily +782, +652, +403 | Second wave fades |
| After 10-17 | 100–200 per day | YouTube "I tried CADCraft"-style test videos started appearing; SOLIDWORKS reseller bluebyte posted a long review; Turkish-language account @mehmetakarim posted and got 10-17 likes 10-26 341 |
| 11-06 | 7695 | Last 7 days +522; the 7 days before that +759; still slowly declining |
CADCraft never got its own HN launch or Product Hunt listing, and it ran no ads. Its curve closely matches its sibling repos', which suggests it had no separate catalyst and was lifted along with the whole suite. The ArtCraft org has 67.7k followers on GitHub, and its repos combined gained about 260k stars in 30 days. Within the family, PhotoCraft has 77k, PDFCraft 19.7k, WordCraft 17.4k, and CADCraft 7.7k, placing it in the middle-to-lower range.
It still stood out on its own for two reasons. First, "free AutoCAD" is a strong hook in Arabic-, Turkish-, Chinese-, and Thai-speaking communities, where people either find subscriptions expensive or use pirated copies, and the repost headlines almost all use that line. Second, MCP: no comparable open-source CAD had it, and the AI crowd was willing to share it.
The fork-to-star ratio is 43% higher than it has any right to be, and that's the doing of this team's playbook. The founder said on HN they'll pay stipends and bug bounties, and outside contributors have to fork before they can open a PR. Sister repo DesignCraft's fork ratio is 69%, SoundCraft's is 61%. How much they actually paid, and to how many people, isn't visible from the outside.
Who it's competing with
2D open-source CAD used to be a niche. LibreCAD spent 15 years building up 6.6k stars, and CADCraft passed it in a single month.
| Project | Launched | Scale (11-06) | How CADCraft differs |
|---|---|---|---|
| AutoCAD / LT | 1982 | Industry standard | Subscription-based, LT roughly $500+ per year; CADCraft copies its controls but is free |
| LibreCAD | 2011 | 6.6k star | The old-school Qt 2D CAD app: weak DWG/CAD support, and the UI isn't the AutoCAD way of doing things |
| QCAD | 2012 | 1.9k star | Reading and writing DWG requires a paid plugin |
| FreeCAD | 2012 | 35k stars | 3D parametric modeling, 2D drafting is not its strength. On r/FreeCAD someone said "CADCraft is to FreeCAD what AutoCAD is to Inventor" |
| nanoCAD / DraftSight / BricsCAD / ZWCAD | Years | Mature commercial software | Cheaper AutoCAD alternatives, but closed-source, paid, or feature-limited |
| tangency-labs/solidcraft | 2026-10-07 | 14.4k stars | Not ArtCraft. Same "XXXCraft + pure Rust + MCP" template, applied to a SolidWorks-style 3D CAD tool. Its star count is nearly twice CADCraft's. |
The last line matters most. SolidCraft is an outsider's project: on the same day ArtCraft launched its AutoCAD clone, someone used the same playbook to build a "SolidWorks" (another name the founder had teased), and it got more stars. CADCraft's README now lists it under "Crafting Apps" as a "community app." Someone is also monetizing the open-source project directly: an unofficial cadcraft.org ranks second for "CADCraft" on Google, hosts an online version, and sells an "Online Pro" plan at $4.9 per month or $29 per year.
Can you follow it?
Building an "open-source AutoCAD" today won't work. CADCraft already holds that spot, backed by a brand. What produced those 7695 stars is something later entrants don't have: 67.7k followers, a story that repeatedly hits the HN front page, a network of paying contributors, and a 7×24 coding-agent pipeline.
Three things to learn:
- Launch a whole suite at once. Every new repo rides the same brand and story. The second batch goes after pricier, more professional targets (Office, AutoCAD) for another round of attention.
- Add "agent-drivable" to an old category. MCP, CLI, and JSON interfaces give an old piece of software a new topic in the AI crowd.
- Write the README as the landing page. Big screenshots, an honest feature-status table, and multilingual UI, so repost accounts in each country can share a single image.
SolidCraft proved there's still one way in: ride the big narrative while it's hot, use the same template to build the one major brand's name that nobody has claimed yet. But that window is probably already shut. ArtCraft 10-31 just shipped craft-anything (14.6k stars), tagline "understand how any software works, then craft your own", which turns "clone everything" into a tool. CADCraft's daily star growth is also slowing.
If it were you
C. This is spillover from a brand's batch launch, not something a single project earned on its own. Copycats lack exactly what drove it: the brand, the narrative, and the contributor network. The playbook is worth studying, but building another "open-source XX clone" today is unlikely to earn the same stars.
Who it fits: developers or small teams that already have a brand or a few thousand followers and can ship several repos in a batch; people who know a specialized app well (CAD, EDA, typesetting, audio) and can recreate its users' workflows faithfully; people in language communities where the software is expensive and piracy is common.
Who it's not for: solo devs with no name recognition who expect to ship one repo and win; anyone trying to beat CADCraft or SolidCraft head-on on "which is more like AutoCAD"; and anyone hoping stars will turn into real users (a star doesn't mean someone is drawing with it, and actual usage is invisible from outside).
How to build it: stop building "open-source AutoCAD." Pick a professional tool that is expensive, where open-source alternatives have stayed weak for years, and ArtCraft hasn't built yet, such as drafting or layout software for one specific industry (inference: the narrower the niche, the better). Keep users' existing muscle memory intact, add MCP and a CLI, put a full, real finished drawing on the README's first screen, and include an honest feature-status table. The other route is to fill the gaps CADCraft leaves open: DWG entities it doesn't support yet and drops on save, industry symbol libraries and templates, or building plugins and tutorials for it and SolidCraft.
How to get users: the main engine is non-English repost accounts on X (Arabic, Turkish, Chinese, Thai), with titles like "Free alternative to XX." The vertical communities for the target software (niche subreddits, vendor blogs, YouTube hands-on reviews) come second. Hacker News is ideal, but an individual project rarely gets multiple front-page runs the way the parent brand does.
Deadline: the "AI clones a big app in a week" topic is still getting shared over these next one or two months. Once tools like craft-anything make cloning something anyone can do, a single clone stops being news.
How to tell we got it wrong: ① Over the next month, if an indie dev with no brand behind them ships an "open-source XX clone" that hits 5000 stars in a month, the path is open to ordinary people too, and the grade should go up; ② if CADCraft's daily star count rebounds, or CAD-specific communities (not just the AI crowd) start talking about it in volume, then part of its stars are earned by the product itself, more than we've credited here; ③ the reverse: if ArtCraft's newer repos get fewer stars each time, the spillover from the parent brand is shrinking too, and this playbook's window is shorter than we estimated.

Why storytold/cadcraft (CADCraft) took off
In one line: CADCraft is a "pure-Rust, clean-room AutoCAD" that the ArtCraft team (GitHub org storytold, founder Brandon Thomas / HN account echelon) batch-wrote with Claude coding agents. Its 7.7k stars were not earned on their own; they came from riding the wave of ArtCraft's "Crafting Apps" series of Adobe and Office clones that exploded across the web. It was one of the second-batch products (10-07 repos created, same day as the Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Pro Tools clones) and ranks 10 by stars among 16 sibling repos.
1. Data (data card + github repo_day, as of 2026-11-06)
- Repo created 2026-10-07; stars 7,695, forks 3,286 (fork/star ratio 43%), open issues 531; latest release v0.16.0 (30 days ago, 16 releases shipped).
- Daily curve (github repo, sourced from 10-09 to 10-27): 10-09 719 → 10-10 1,188 (+469) → 10-11 1,706 (+518) → 10-12 2,345 (+639) → 10-13 3,217 (+872, peak) → 10-14 +782 → 10-15 +652 → 10-16 +403, then decaying to 100–200 per day; the last 7 days added +522, the first 7 days added +759, slowly declining.
- Maintenance activity is very high (GitHub Search API, 11-06): 1,702 PRs, 935 merged; 1,153 issues; top contributors vangel76 with 205 commits, tanish2k09 with 117 commits, and echelon (the founder) with 57 commits. The README carries CodeRabbit and SonarCloud badges, and the repo contains AGENTS.md / CLAUDE.md. This is a project where agents write code 7×24 and humans review and merge.
- Same family (github repo_profile): photocraft 77k, artcraft 39k, pdfcraft 19.7k, filmcraft 17.6k, wordcraft 17.4k, craft-anything 14.6k (10-31 created), lightcraft 15.5k, vectorcraft 11.4k, effectcraft 8.5k, cadcraft 7.7k, gridcraft 7.2k, designcraft 5.1k, deckcraft 4.6k, figcraft 4.4k, soundcraft 4.1k. Org total stars about 260k; GitHub followers 67.7k (GitHub API).
2. Competitors
| Name | Where | Launched | Scale | How CADCraft differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AutoCAD / AutoCAD LT / AutoCAD Web | Big vendor (Autodesk) | 1982 | Industry standard | Paid subscription (LT about $500+/year); CADCraft is free, open-source, and copies its command-line habits |
| LibreCAD | Open source | 2011 | 6.6k stars / 1.4k forks (GitHub API) | A long-running 2D CAD built on Qt/C++, with weak DWG support and a non-AutoCAD command-line interaction; CADCraft passed its star count within a month |
| QCAD | Open-source (community edition) + paid Pro | 2012 | 1.9k stars | DWG requires a paid plugin; CADCraft reads and writes DWG for free (built on acadrust) |
| FreeCAD | Open source | 2012 | 35k stars | 3D parametric with a steep learning curve; 2D drafting is not its strength. On r/FreeCAD someone said "CADCraft is to FreeCAD what AutoCAD is to Inventor" |
| OpenSCAD / CadQuery / SolveSpace | Open source | 2010/2018/2015 | 10.6k / 6.1k / 4.2k stars | Code-based modeling or 3D; not a DWG drafting workflow |
| chili3d, CADmium | Open-source (browser 3D CAD) | 2022/2023 | 5.0k / 1.6k stars | 3D, in-browser; CADCraft is 2D drafting + native + wasm |
| nanoCAD Free, DraftSight, BricsCAD, ZWCAD, GstarCAD | Commercial software | Years | Mature commercial product | Cheaper AutoCAD alternatives, but all are closed-source paid or feature-limited |
| tangency-labs/solidcraft | Open source | 2026-10-07 (same day) | 14.4k stars / 1.9k forks (GitHub API) | Not from ArtCraft; using the "*Craft + pure Rust + MCP" template to build a 3D parametric CAD (SolidWorks-style), with nearly 2 times CADCraft's stars |
Bottom line: the 2D open-source CAD space was already quiet (LibreCAD has 15k stars after 6.6 years), and CADCraft has no decisive feature lead (its README says early development and its ROADMAP lists parity percentages). Its differentiation is "AutoCAD's command line as-is + native DWG/DXF + drivable by agents via MCP + pure Rust across all platforms including the browser."
3. Growth tactics (evidence)
- 母品牌爆发的溢出(主因,已确认)。9-30/10-01 ArtCraft 一次发 7 个 Adobe 克隆(PhotoCraft 等),10-02 创始人在 r/Adobe、r/SaaS 发帖「I've used Opus 5.5 to recreate 7 of the top Adobe apps in 100% pure native Rust」;10-04 HN「ArtCraft Apps – open-source Adobe compatible suite written in Rust」180 分 246 评(hackernews 库,id 49958850),10-06「Adobe Creative Suite Cleanroom Port to Rust」144 分;媒体 techaeris(10-07)、tedium(10-08,HN 36 分 71 评)、flowtivity(10-08)、jacar.es 跟进。创始人在 HN 帖里预告:「I'm going to do Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, and Solidworks too … I'll pay stipends and bug bounties.」(原帖正文经 Exa 检索)。CADCraft 就是这个预告的兑现,10-07 和 wordcraft/gridcraft/deckcraft/soundcraft 同一天建库。
- Second wave of "Office + AutoCAD" coverage drove the peak (confirmed). 10-12 HN "An open-source, clean-room reimplementation of Microsoft Word in pure Rust" 101 points, 119 comments; same period, a reposting thread on X bundling it all: @0xCodila 10-11 (318 likes, 20k views, "cancel ~$1,500 of subscriptions"), @adnan3li 10-12 (in Arabic, 193 likes, name-checks CADCraft). CADCraft's 872 star peak landed on 10-13, the same day as the single-day peaks for wordcraft, gridcraft, deckcraft, soundcraft and artcraft (github repo max_day_date). It was lifted along with the rest of the wave.
- Non-English tech repost accounts (confirmed). Live X search for "cadcraft" over the past 30 days returns almost entirely non-English top posts: @Sn0wbrave 10-09 in Arabic, "for people drawing engineering drawings and looking for an open-source AutoCAD alternative," 332 likes, 18k views; @QingQ77 (Geek Lite) 10-08 in Chinese, 127 likes, 9.7k views; @mehmetakarim 10-26 in Turkish, 341 likes (also mentioning SolidCraft); Thai account @sheapgamer posted a full Crafting Apps roundup, 2,467 likes, 95k views. "Free AutoCAD" hits a nerve in regions with heavy piracy or subscription burden.
- YouTube reviews and CAD vertical media (existence confirmed, view counts not verified): "First Look at CADCraft," "I tried CADCraft 'The opensource AutoCAD replacement'," "CADCraft — Open-Source AutoCAD Alternative," and others. SOLIDWORKS reseller bluebyte.biz 10-17 wrote a long review, "Can an AI-Built Open Source AutoCAD Alternative Really Compete?" There is also a discussion thread on r/FreeCAD.
- SEO parasite sites feeding back (confirmed): cadcraft.org calls itself an "independent guide" and offers a download guide, a hosted online version, tutorials, and a vs-AutoCAD page. It ranks second on Google for "CADCraft." SourceForge hosts a mirror. These pages route search traffic back to GitHub.
- Paid contributors plus agent-written code means lots of forks (partly confirmed). The founder publicly said he'd pay stipends and bug bounties. 1,702 PRs came from many outside contributors, and each PR requires a fork, which explains the 43% fork ratio (sibling designcraft 69%, soundcraft 61%; the whole family looks like this). The exact stipend amounts and coverage are unverified.
Not found: a standalone HN post for CADCraft itself (the hackernews table has no cadcraft post with ≥5 points), ad spend, or a Product Hunt launch. It also hasn't appeared on GitHub trending. The repo is under 60 days old, so it isn't eligible, which carries no meaning.
4. Why it took off (the reasons)
- Batch launches under one brand, each riding the others: the same org shipped 30+ "XXXCraft" repos within 16 days. Each new repo inherits the parent brand's audience (org 67.7k followers) and media narrative. CADCraft's curve shape and peak date match its siblings exactly, with no independent breakout point of its own.
- The story is big: "AI agents rewrite Adobe / Office / AutoCAD in a week" was a major topic on X and HN in 2026 October (the "SaaSocalypse"). AutoCAD is the most expensive, highest-barrier pro tool in that story, which makes it easy to share.
- Hits a real pain point: AutoCAD subscriptions are expensive, and open-source 2D CAD has long lacked a solid AutoCAD-style workflow. Repost accounts in the Middle East, Turkey, and the Chinese-speaking world all used the headline "free AutoCAD alternative."
- The product looks real: the README has full floor-plan screenshots, a long command list, DWG/DXF read and write, PDF output, 18 interface languages, a wasm online version, and 16 releases in 30 days. It isn't an empty shell, which gives reposters the confidence that it "actually works" (HN comments were split: some said "very broken," others "basically fine").
- "Built for agents": MCP, JSON, and CLI let agents draw, a new selling point none of the other open-source CAD tools have, and it appeals to the AI crowd.
5. Is differentiation why it took off?
Differentiation: identical AutoCAD command-line operation, native DWG/DXF, native cross-platform in pure Rust plus browser, agent-drivable (MCP), and fully free with no account. Against LibreCAD/QCAD, the edge is AutoCAD habits and DWG; against commercial alternatives, it's free and open source; against FreeCAD, it's positioned for 2D drafting. But differentiation isn't the main reason it gathered stars: within its family CADCraft ranks only 10st, its peak falls on the same day as its siblings, and the real drivers are the parent brand's batch launch and the "AI clones everything" narrative. Differentiation (especially MCP) is what lets it get singled out and discussed long-term in CAD circles and AI circles.
6. Visibility and copycats
- Visibility: already widely discussed. The parent brand hit the HN front page several times (180/144/101/91 points), with coverage from techaeris, tedium, flowtivity, and big multilingual X accounts. CADCraft itself was covered separately by bluebyte, YouTube, and r/FreeCAD. No revenue is involved (open source, not on TrustMRR).
- Copycats:
- tangency-labs/solidcraft (created 10-07, 14.4k stars): a parametric 3D CAD using the "*Craft + pure Rust + MCP" formula, with even more going for it than CADCraft.
- cadcraft.org: an unofficial SEO site that hosts an online version and sells "CADCraft Online Pro" at $4.9/month or $29/year (cloud drawings, version history, share links), monetizing the open-source project directly.
- craftsuite.net (an unofficial downloader, HN Show 10-11), artcraft.tools (10-27 Show HN, riding the name), photocraft-companion, LayerShop, and other satellites.
- The whole "clean-room clone of X software" model got widely copied. ArtCraft itself shipped craft-anything (14.6k stars, "understand how any software works, and craft your own") 10-31.
7. Takeaways
- Use agents to batch-build "open-source alternatives to expensive big software," shipping a whole set at once, so every new product shares one brand and narrative. Then pick more expensive, more professional targets (Office, AutoCAD) for a second wave.
- "Built for agents" (MCP + CLI + JSON) gives an old category a new selling point, so the AI crowd is willing to share it.
- The README works as a landing page: big screenshots, an honest status table, and multilingual UI, making it easy for regional repost accounts to screenshot and share.
- For SEO players: a same-named .org domain for a popular open-source project, plus a hosted online version and a cheap cloud-feature subscription, is a ready-made parasitic monetization model (cadcraft.org is already doing this).
8. Uncertain
- The stipend and bug-bounty amounts, how many contributors are paid, and how many forks come from paid contributions versus individual deployments are unverified.
- Day-by-day star counts for 10-07 through 10-09 are missing (the table starts at 10-09 719 stars). The GitHub stargazers timestamp endpoint returns 404 for this repo.
- YouTube view counts weren't retrieved (API call failed). The r/FreeCAD post body was blocked by Reddit.
- How many people actually use it to draw (downloads, online-version usage) is unknown. Stars don't equal usage.
- Whether tangency-labs is connected to ArtCraft is unverified (the README doesn't mention ArtCraft).
