"It should be your call, not Anthropic's": Craft Anything hit 6k stars in 15 days, riding a controversy, backed by a company that already had 260k stars
What it is A free, open-source desktop app: point it at a website, app, or game, and it studies the original, then has Claude Code build your own version, comparing it to the original and iterating.
Why it took off Anthropic had just confirmed Claude Code wouldn't clone existing games, and the "REA got blocked" fight was raging. The next day ArtCraft posted a launch tweet naming Anthropic, and X big accounts packaged it as "REA's replacement." The team's 260k stars and 67k followers, built on AI clones of the Adobe suite, meant the new repo got traction immediately.
CHow to follow Stop building another general "clone any software" tool. Fill the gaps it leaves: a clone tool that works without Claude Code, or an open-source benchmark that scores all AI cloning tools. And learn its habit of shipping within 48 hours when a platform changes its rules.

Craft Anything is an open-source desktop app: you give it a website, app, or game, it studies the original, then your own Claude Code builds your version, which gets scored against the original and refined. Created Oct 31, by Nov 6 afternoon it had 17k stars and over 3 thousand forks. The stars didn't come mainly from the product: it caught the two hottest days of the "Anthropic blocks REA, bans game cloning" fight, and it sits on a team that gathered 260k stars in a single month. The method is learnable; this specific product is hard to copy.
A post that tagged Anthropic by name
2026 Oct 30, Anthropic's Addy Osmani confirmed on X that Claude Code had a new instruction: don't build "a clone of any existing game, even renamed or framed as original." His reason was one line: "Using Claude to infringe IP violates our usage policies." Before that, "Anthropic quietly blocked REA" had been spreading on r/claude and X for over a week. REA is the open-source reverse-engineering tool that went from under 10k stars to over 40 million in a month.
Two days later, Nov 1, ArtCraft's official account @get_artcraft posted:
We believe that you should have the final say in what you do with your property, and not @AnthropicAI. That's why we're dropping Craft Anything!
("We believe how you use your stuff should be up to you, not @AnthropicAI. So we're releasing Craft Anything!") The post drew about 127k views (quoted by madrobot.blog 11-02). The repo had gone up the afternoon before.
What it actually is
Usage is three steps: pick a target (URL, installed app, game, or file), type something like "rebuild this website" or "rebuild this game's mechanics in Rust," and hit start. It then runs four stages:
- Research: over three hundred inspection tools written from scratch in Rust, examining the original's pages, files, and runtime behavior at various screen widths, recording evidence for every finding;
- Build: drives Claude Code on your machine to write a new project in the language, framework, or engine you specify (games can target Unity, Unreal, or Godot);
- Compare: screenshots web pages at three screen widths and scores similarity; 90% is the passing line, otherwise it revises, up to 6 rounds;
- Finish: opens, plays, or previews your version, then takes change requests.
How it differs from REA: REA orchestrates external tools like Ghidra and IDA to help an agent "understand" software. Craft Anything ships its own disassembler and decompiler, has a GUI (simple and advanced modes), and adds the clone-and-score loop on top. The default is clean-room mode, which only looks at what a visitor can see (screenshots, text, layout, colors, fonts) and doesn't read the original's code. The repo even has a dedicated section explaining why this use fits Anthropic's terms.
But two things need to be clear. First, it runs on Claude Code itself, the unmodified version under your own account, which requires a paid subscription, and the usage counts against your quota. Second, it hasn't removed Anthropic's ban on cloning games; it just appends its own instructions, so some games still get refused (madrobot 11-02). The "REA replacement that Claude won't block" framing wasn't the project's own, and it overstates things. The project calls itself early alpha, current version v0.3.0.
How the stars grew
Daily stars (GitHub, as of 11-06):
| Date | Stars | Daily | What happened that day |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10-31 | Repo created | Pushed to GitHub in the afternoon 14:50 (UTC) | |
| 11-01 | @get_artcraft launch post; Philippines' Gadget Pilipinas wrote about it the same day | ||
| 11-02 | 692 | madrobot.blog and Brazil's tambotech covered it | |
| 11-03 | 3,519 | +2,827 | @rammcodes, with 500k followers, posted about it; Japan's note.com, Medium, and PJFP followed |
| 11-04 | 7,756 | +4,237 | Peak day |
| 11-05 | 11,125 | +3,369 | |
| 11-06 | 14,636 | +3,511 | By afternoon the GitHub page showed 17,008 stars and 3,095 forks |
The real spark was the 11-03 post. @rammcodes wrote: "Claude is blocking REA, so the team who recently built open-source Adobe alternatives also made a new alternative for REA." The repo itself never mentioned REA; "it exists because Claude blocked REA" is a story this post told for it. The two days after the post were the two fastest-growing days for stars. Whether it spread organically or was coordinated can't be seen from outside.
After that came the usual spread: It's FOSS posted a video on Facebook, several tech accounts on Instagram reposted the same copy, YouTube had "I had AI clone IMDb" style reviews, and sites in Italy and Hungary shared it. The README is in English, Japanese, Chinese, and Korean. On Trendshift's overall chart it ranked #11-02 on 2 and #11-03 on 1.
One channel didn't work: Hacker News. It got only one post there with 4 points (11-05), while REA had 814 points and 340 comments at the time. These stars came mostly from X and short-video audiences, not HN developers.
Who is behind it
The GitHub org is called storytold, publicly branded ArtCraft, founded by Brandon Thomas. From late September to early October the team shipped a string of "XCraft" projects: a well-known software product cloned with AI in Rust, open-source and free. PhotoCraft (targeting Photoshop) reached 77k stars, ArtCraft 39k, and PdfCraft, FilmCraft, WordCraft, and LightCraft each landed between 15k and 20k. They peaked in mid-October, covered by Phoronix, HN, and a pile of YouTube channels. By November the org's 33 repos had over 260k stars combined and 67k followers on GitHub.
Craft Anything is roughly number 16 in the series. Others were already building on it as soon as it dropped: 67k followers, a Discord, r/ArtCraftAI (where the official account posted "in response to Anthropic blocking REA, we built a version they can't block"), and ArtCraft Launcher, a one-click installer for the whole lineup that includes Craft Anything.
Development speed is part of their playbook too. Trendshift logged 7 days, 353 merged PRs, and 9 contributors, with three releases in about 50 hours. The main developer is AI: in PhotoCraft's last 100 commits, 56 were credited to Claude Opus 5.5.
So at the end of the day, these 17k stars are three things stacked on top of each other: a platform controversy that reached millions, an already-famous 260k-star brand, and a big account post that called it a "REA replacement." The product differences (built-in decompiler, side-by-side scoring, clean room) are what make that story hold up and give the press something to write about. But most of the people who starred it in 6 days probably never installed it or ran it even once: it needs a paid Claude Code, and the project is still alpha (inferred).
Who it's competing with
| Project | Scale | How it differs |
|---|---|---|
| morluto/rea(REA) | 434k stars, 108k forks; 10-13 +54k in one day | The clear leader; orchestrates external reverse-engineering tools for 24 kinds of agents, focused on understanding |
| Jakeschincariol/replica-skill | 7.8 thousand stars, 10-03 launched, earlier than it | A set of Claude skills and prompts, with no engine, UI, or scoring |
| JCodesMore/ai-website-cloner-template | 39K stars | Clones only websites, one command handed to a coding agent |
| firecrawl/open-lovable | 29K stars | Converts websites to React, cloud-based scraping |
| abi/screenshot-to-code | 81K stars | Turns one screenshot into frontend code, no checking or iteration |
| REA side projects like REAP, ERA, rea-video | Dozens to 3.7 thousand stars | Copycats, repackaging, or prompt bundles |
| Website-cloning features from Lovable, v0, Bolt, same.new | Commercial products | Cloud-hosted, paid, web only |
| Just use Claude Code / Codex directly | — | Agents can clone without it too; only games and reverse engineering get blocked more and more |
"Study one software product, then clone it" was already crowded in October. Even ArtCraft's own "XCraft clean-room clone" template got copied: BIMCraft 949 stars, solvecraft 365 stars, and others made clean-room clones of Auth0 and Salesforce.
If it were you
Verdict: C. Don't go head-on with this one. What's worth learning is its launch playbook. Its stars came from ArtCraft's existing 67k followers and 260k-star brand, plus a controversy past its peak, and you can't get any of that. The "clone any software" niche is also held down by REA at 430k stars, with dozens of copycat repos underneath.
Good fit for: developers who already have some audience (a few thousand GitHub followers, or an account that can hold its own on X or short video), who move fast and can ship a demoable thing in two or three days. What you should learn is the timing of "when the platform tightens, instantly side with users," plus the matrix approach of spinning out one template repeatedly.
Bad fit for: anyone thinking of building another "clone anything" or "REA replacement." The lane already has REA, replica-skill, Craft Anything, and a long tail of copycats, and the twentieth one will barely get stars. Also not for anyone betting the project on "getting around Anthropic's limits": Craft Anything itself didn't get around them, and the platform can tighten again anytime.
How to do it:
- Watch platform policy. When big companies tighten something (model refusals, API limits, store takedowns), users go looking for alternatives. An open-source version that runs and can be demoed within 48 hours beats a more complete one shipped two weeks later.
- State your stance in the launch post and name the platform. Lines like "your stuff, your call" will get reposted by the controversy itself.
- Turn legal anxiety into a feature: default to the safest mode, and write a dedicated section on "why this is compliant" so media and users feel safe resharing it.
- Narrow it down. The gaps it leaves are ready openings: don't tie it to Claude Code (support open models or other agents), or go deep on one target type (e.g., only cloning a certain kind of web component, or only one engine). Narrow projects are easier to remember within their own circle (inference).
- If you can keep shipping, copy its matrix approach: same naming, same template, and each new repo draws on the followers the older ones built up.
How to get users: Post the launch on X, and get one or two big accounts tied to the controversy to repost it (Craft Anything's fastest growth came right after @rammcodes' post). Prepare demos that can be cut into short videos (titles like "I had AI clone IMDb"). Ship a multilingual README from the start, and sites in Japan, Brazil, and Italy will repost it on their own. Don't count on HN: this kind of thing doesn't land there.
When: The buzz over "Anthropic bans REA / no cloning games" peaked from late October to early November. To ride this wave, act before mid-November. The more realistic move is to wait for the next platform crackdown and have your speed and templates ready in advance.
Signs that would mean you read it wrong:
- Craft Anything's star growth holds over the next two weeks, and HN or dev communities start discussing real usage. That would show the product itself has users, not just narrative, and that the "do the parts it does badly" route is worth reassessing.
- A similar library without big-brand backing (e.g. a clone tool for some Codex or open-source model version) reaches tens of thousands of stars in November. That would show this niche still has room.
- Anthropic publicly states whether it allows or bans "wrapping Claude Code as the engine." If allowed, this category of tool heats up again. If banned, the line closes for good.
- The reverse: ArtCraft's next Craft library drops to a few thousand stars, which would mean the matrix play is weakening, and the value of copying it shrinks too.

Bottom line
Craft Anything is an open-source Rust desktop app from the ArtCraft team (GitHub org storytold, founder Brandon Thomas). It studies a website, app, or game, then has the user's own Claude Code build its own version, and compares it against the original, iterating as it goes. It took off because three things hit at once:
- Timing: REA (Reverse Engineer Anything, 430k stars) was hot. At the end of October, "Anthropic banned REA" spread everywhere, and on Oct 30 Anthropic confirmed it had added an instruction to Claude Code not to clone specific existing games.
- ArtCraft's built-in audience: It went viral with "AI cloning the whole Adobe suite," has 67k GitHub followers, and gained 260k+ stars in a month.
- A launch post aimed at Anthropic, plus marketing accounts packaging it as "the replacement for the banned REA."
The product's own edge (a built-in check → build → compare loop, clean room by default, a built-in decompiler) is good material for the story, but it wasn't the main driver.
1. Data
- Repo creation and star gains: Repo created 2026-10-31 14:50 UTC. Daily stars in the repo: 11-02 692,11-03 3,519,11-04 7,756,11-05 11,125,11-06 14,636 (github repo_day). Biggest single-day gain: 4,237 (11-04). Live GitHub API value: 17,008 stars, 3,095 forks (11-06 afternoon).
- Fork/star ratio about 17%, close to new repos of similar age and size (median about 11%). The suspect column in the library is empty. The stargazer list API returns 404 or nothing for every repo, so star-botting can't be verified at the account level.
- Dev speed: Trendshift logged 7 days, 353 merged PRs, and 9 contributors (https://trendshift.io/repositories/331267). PJFP counts about 50 hours for three releases in a row. Current version v0.3.0.
- Other repos in the same org (github repo): photocraft 77,165, artcraft 38,956, pdfcraft 19,683, filmcraft 17,593, wordcraft 17,388, lightcraft 15,534, and so on. Almost all were created in a cluster from 9-30 to 10-09,10-10 to 10-13. craft-anything is roughly the 16th "Craft" app from this org, and the newest push for stars in the family.

Bottom line: many projects do "research + clone," and REA is the clear leader. Craft Anything is neither the first nor the biggest.
3. Growth tactics (where users come from)
- Launch post on its own account, aimed at Anthropic (confirmed): @get_artcraft 11-01 posted "We believe that you should have the final say in what you do with your property, and not @AnthropicAI. That's why we're dropping Craft Anything!" About 127k views (cited by madrobot.blog 2026-11-02). The post came two days after Anthropic confirmed the "no cloning games" instruction (10-30).
- X 大号转述,包装成「Claude 封了 REA,所以有了替代品」(已确认):@rammcodes(自称全平台 50 万+ 粉)11-03 发帖「Claude is blocking REA, so the team who recently built open-source Adobe alternatives also made a new alternative for REA」(https://x.com/rammcodes/status/2117515072893284799 、…/2117649499753676865)。
- Cross-platform reposting / content farms (confirmed): It's FOSS's Facebook videos and posts use the same copy. Instagram has several tech accounts (DfSEQEmRkET, DfPrDZ7mrU_, reel DfR5-M9Nzop, DfPaybysZIh). YouTube has reviews such as "I Asked AI to Recreate IMDb With Craft Anything" and "I Tested 'Craft Anything' and It Did Something Weird."
- Tech media and long-tail blogs (confirmed): Gadget Pilipinas (11-01), madrobot.blog (11-02), tambotech (Brazil, 11-02), note.com (Japan, 11-03), Medium Open Intelligence (11-03), PJFP (11-03), freshweights (11-03), ianews24 (Italy, reprinting ANSA), pbxscience (11-04), hup.hu (Hungary). The README comes in English, Japanese, Chinese, and Korean.
- ArtCraft's existing audience and cross-promotion across its suite (confirmed): The org has 67,716 GitHub followers (GitHub API). Discord: discord.gg/artcraft. Subreddit r/ArtCraftAI, which has an official post: "In response to Anthropic blocking REA we developed our own version that's not blocked called Craft Anything." ArtCraft Launcher installs the whole suite in one click, and Craft Anything is included (getartcraft.com/apps).
- Hacker News barely moved it (confirmed): Craft Anything got one post on HN with 4 points (11-05). For comparison, REA has 814 points / 340 comments on HN, and ArtCraft's series had discussions at 94 and 36 points.
- Trendshift charts (confirmed): On Trendshift's own overall chart, 11-02 ranked 2 and 11-03 ranked 1. GitHub's official trending doesn't list repos younger than 60 days, so this traffic didn't come from official trending.
4. Why it took off
- Rode a huge, emotional news cycle: REA went from under 10k stars to 400k+ in a month (PJFP citing OSSInsight; in our database 10-09 is 37k and 11-06 is 434k). Starting 10-21, "Anthropic quietly blocked REA" spread on r/claude and X, reaching over a million people (PJFP). Tom's Hardware (10-31, 11-02), PCMag, Firstpost, and Game Developer all covered it. Craft Anything launched right at the peak of the controversy (repo created 10-31, post on 11-01), positioned as "on the user's side, against Anthropic."
- The team is a traffic machine on its own: In one month, the same org repeatedly landed on Phoronix, HN, Reddit, and various YouTube channels with "AI recreates Photoshop / Office / AutoCAD," totaling 260k+ stars. PhotoCraft alone has 77k. They have ready-made followers, a Discord, a Launcher, and media relationships, so a new repo gets immediate pickup.
- The "clone any software" promise is easy to share: REA's pitch is "understands it." Craft Anything's pitch is "understands it, then gives you a working version of your own, and grades it." The demo material (cloning IMDb, Snake, the Chrome dino) suits short video naturally.
- Legal anxiety built into the product: Clean room is the default (it doesn't read the original code, only what visitors can see), plus a section on "why this complies with Anthropic's terms." That gave users and press a "this is compliant" line, and the press kept quoting it.
- Low barrier: Installers for Windows, macOS, Linux, and FreeBSD. Simple mode gets you started in three steps. It uses your own Claude Code subscription, and the software is free.
5. Differentiation, and whether that's why it took off
- Versus REA: Ships a pure-Rust disassembler / decompiler (no reliance on Ghidra or IDA, though it will use Ghidra if installed), a desktop GUI (Simple and Advanced modes), and a Study → Build → Check → Refine loop (it compares screenshots at three screen widths with a 90% threshold, up to 6 rounds). Clean room mode only allows an allowlist of 104 tools, and 320 tools are exposed as both CLI commands and MCP tools.
- Versus website cloners: Scope covers desktop apps, mobile apps, and games (can output Unity, Unreal, or Godot), runs locally, and keeps an evidence ledger.
- Is that the cause? Only part of it. The repo reached 15k+ within 6 days, but most people couldn't have actually installed and used it (it needs a paid Claude Code subscription, the project calls itself early alpha, and agents beyond the build step are "not yet run live"). What drives the stars is the narrative: "anti-Anthropic + REA alternative + ArtCraft brand." The differentiation makes that narrative hold up and gives media something to write about. Notably, its default is Claude Code (Opus 5.5) and it doesn't strip Anthropic's game restrictions (madrobot), so the "it can't be blocked" claim is overstated (PJFP).
6. How many people have seen it
- Already widely discussed: tech media and blogs in several countries have covered it, the launch post on X got 127k views and was reposted by a 500k-follower account, YouTube has several reviews, and it hit #1 overall on Trendshift. It's an open-source project, so no revenue involved.
- The REA controversy behind it was covered at the level of Tom's Hardware, PCMag, and Scientific American (which interviewed REA's author).
- Copycats: a pile of REA spin-offs already exists (REAP 3.7k, ERA, rea-video, rea-safe-agents, "Rebuild software from behavior," NabilRFG12/Reverse-Engineer-anything 1.2k). Direct competitors to Craft Anything's "replicate + compare" include replica-skill (older, 10-03). ArtCraft's own Craft series has already been copied in naming and format: IPedrax/BIMCraft (949 stars), bherbruck/solvecraft (365), and occupysaas's "clean room recreation of Auth0 / Salesforce."
7. What others can borrow
- Event-driven launches: The moment the platform (Anthropic) tightens policy, produce an open-source alternative within 48 hours that's "on the user's side," name the platform in the launch post, and let the controversy spread the post for you.
- Matrix-style star farming: One org keeps shipping apps from the same template ("X-Craft: a pure-Rust clean-room clone of a well-known software"), and each new repo inherits the followers, Discord, and Launcher traffic that older repos built up.
- Pre-emptively endorse compliance: Turn the legal and terms-of-service dispute into product features (Clean room mode, a ToS explainer doc) to lower the psychological barrier for media and users to share.
- AI building AI tools: Claude Opus 5.5 is the main developer (in PhotoCraft's last 100 commits, 56 are credited to Opus 5.5), merging 353 PRs in 7 days. Speed is traded for a long feature list (320 tools).
8. Still unclear
- How much of the stars come from real usage: the stargazer API wasn't available, so star farming and real install counts can't be verified. Release download counts weren't checked (GitHub API was rate-limited at the time).
- There's no evidence on whether accounts like rammcodes repost organically or whether ArtCraft paid or partnered with them.
- The 127k views on @get_artcraft's launch post are a quoted figure and weren't independently verified.
- Still unknown: what the paid plan (the README says "Next: the managed tier") will look like, and whether Anthropic will comment on this use of wrapping Claude Code as an engine.
- How long the momentum lasts: on day 11-06 it was still adding +2k to +3.5k a day, and we haven't seen a 7-day comparison yet.
