"This UI looks way too much like AE": EffectCraft's 8,500 stars, traffic spilled over from the Adobe-suite wave

What it is A free, open-source motion design and compositing app modeled on After Effects: layers, keyframes, expressions, 308 effects, 3D cameras and lights, a render queue. It runs on three desktop platforms plus a browser version, and AI agents can drive it directly through the command line and MCP.

Why it took off The same team released 7 open-source apps aimed at Adobe products in one go. The story of "one person with AI rewrote the Adobe suite" spread through big X accounts (one post with 1.47M views), HN, and tech media. EffectCraft got traffic as the "After Effects → EffectCraft" row in the comparison table. The open-source world lacked a layer-based AE alternative, which also brought a bit of long-tail traffic from motion-design YouTubers.

CHow you could follow Don't build another open-source AE or another "AI rewrites X software." Go fill the gaps it admits it can't cover (opening AE project files, migrating AE expressions and presets), or build a library of skills and templates that lets agents make videos with it. Get users through its issue tracker, its Discord, and motion-design YouTube.

Grade C: the stars come from the suite narrative and a week of big accounts amplifying it, which followers can't replicate. The "AI clean-room rewrite of commercial software" model has already been copied widely, and the best copycat only reached 949 stars. What you can learn is the launch playbook. Companion projects are possible, but the ceiling is low. Public / widely discussed

EffectCraft is an open-source After Effects alternative written entirely in Rust. It hit 8,473 stars in 36 days. But it didn't take off on its own merit. The same team released 7 "clean-room Adobe rewrite" apps in one go in early October. The story "one person with an AI agent rewrote the whole Adobe suite, and it's free" spread across X, HN, and tech media, and EffectCraft was just the "After Effects → EffectCraft" row in the comparison table. Below: where this wave of traffic came from, what kept EffectCraft a little traction on its own, and what someone trying to win open-source stars can take from it.

A Taiwanese editor downloaded it and tried it

On the night of October 7, 2026, @NeahaigeN, a Taiwanese creator who takes video and audio jobs, posted on X that he'd downloaded EffectCraft and tried it. His first reaction: "This interface looks way too much like AE." The post got 316 likes and 22k views.

Two days later, on October 9, the gaming news account @Pirat_Nation posted a bigger one: "A developer has released seven free open-source apps as clean-room alternatives to Adobe's core tools…" It included a comparison table with EffectCraft in it. That post got 24k likes and 1.47M views. The same day, @chasmmmmmmmmmmm posted "THE FULL ADOBE SUITE HAS BEEN REWRITTEN IN RUST" with 9,428 likes and 380k views. The next day, October 10, EffectCraft gained 906 stars in a single day, its highest single day to date.

What it is

A motion design and compositing app modeled on the look of After Effects: compositions, layers, keyframes, a graph editor, expressions (familiar AE-style functions like wiggle and loopOut), 3D cameras and lights, and a render queue. The README says it has 308 built-in effects. Panel names and keyboard shortcuts largely follow AE conventions, so AE users can open it without relearning.

A few things AE doesn't have:

  • Built-in Lottie import and export, so animations can go straight into websites and apps;
  • Project files are readable JSON (.ecproj) that you can diff in git;
  • Every menu action is available via command line and MCP, so AI agents can drive it to make animations and render output;
  • Encoding and decoding are written in Rust from scratch, with no dependence on FFmpeg;
  • Installers for macOS, Windows, and Linux, plus a browser version.

It's built by ArtCraft (the storytold org on GitHub, led by Brandon Thomas), originally a studio selling AI creative tools. The project has roughly 4,290 commits. One of the contributors is a claude account with 236 commits. Someone who tallied the whole suite found that about 77% of commits list Claude Opus 5.5 as a co-author.

The README is candid: "alpha." The feature list covers about 91%, and it's about 45% of the way to professional commercial delivery. It says "not yet recommended for commercial client work." It can't open AE project files and doesn't support AE plugins.

The stars are a wave of traffic, not its own

(GitHub daily stars, 11-06; daily data is missing between 10-02 and 10-09, so it's impossible to separate how much HN, media, and X each contributed)

The sister projects tell the story best. Under the same org, PhotoCraft (aimed at Photoshop) has 77.2k stars, its main repo 39k, PdfCraft 19.7k, FilmCraft (aimed at Premiere) 17.6k… EffectCraft has 8.5k and ranks 9. The org totals 264k stars, and nearly every repo's single-day peak falls on the same four days, 10-10 to 10-13. EffectCraft's star count is roughly 11% of PhotoCraft's. People were chasing "the Adobe suite got rewritten by AI," and EffectCraft rode along.

Most of the people sharing it had never used the software. The story hit three nerves at once: fatigue with Adobe subscriptions (AE alone is about $22.99/month, and @0xMovez's post openly says the author was angered by Adobe's cancellation penalty), how big a software project AI coding can actually produce, and whether clean-room rewrites are legal. On HN, someone said "this project basically answers whether AI can write large, usable software."

No paid acquisition or star-buying visible. Fork count is high at 4,500, fork/star is 53% (median for new repos with 5k+ stars is about 11%). Cause not confirmed; likely contributors and agents forking to submit PRs (198 open PRs now). Inference.

The slice it keeps for itself

After the bundle hype faded, EffectCraft still has a small long tail from the motion design crowd:

  • YouTube: Umair Fareed's Short "Is EffectCraft better than After Effects? The REALITY" 130k views; AB Animation Studios review 78k; Motion Nations video 10-09 58k; Nijat Ibrahimli tutorial 29k (YouTube, 11-06).
  • Reddit r/motiongraphics has launch posts, r/MotionDesign has reviews; Instagram and LinkedIn people reposting "306 effects. Free and open source".

Motion YouTubers are willing to cover it because the open source world has long lacked a layer-based tool that can really work like AE:

PeersScaleHow EffectCraft differs

Cavalry, Jitter, Rive, Apple MotionNot verifiedCommercial software or web SaaS

(GitHub,11-06)

So the order matters: what took it to 8,500 stars was the bundle narrative and how it was released. "Open source finally has something like AE" only earned the motion crowd's long tail. It ranks mid-to-low among its siblings, which shows the same thing.

How many people know about it

Lots. Ars Technica, Phoronix, CineD, Tedium, 36kr have all covered it, HN hit 180 points, a single X post got 1.47M views, and YouTube has reviews in the hundreds of thousands.

Plenty of copycats, but they copied the pattern, not EffectCraft: "AI clean-room rewrite of a commercial app, pure Rust, named *Craft". October's new repos include BIMCraft (against Revit, 949 stars), solvecraft (against Fusion, 360,365 stars), and more than one mailcraft against Outlook, plus notecraft, scriptcraft, minnamate against Adobe Animate, zeroauthy and salescompel against Auth0 and Salesforce. There's also the unofficial downloader site craftsuite.net riding the name, and malicious "cracked installer" repos using the AE name. I haven't found any copycat that built a real AE alternative at scale.

If it were you

Verdict: C. You can learn a sharp release playbook here, but following it isn't worth it. EffectCraft's stars came from one team shipping 7 tools at once against all of Adobe, plus a coordinated week of big X accounts reposting. Followers can't get either. The pattern itself has already been copied all over October; the best copycat, BIMCraft, has only 949 stars, two orders of magnitude below the original.

Who it suits: developers already in motion design or video tools, who know the AE workflow and can write Rust or use Lottie, or who already have a somewhat known open source project and want to ride this wave with add-ons.

Who it doesn't suit: anyone starting from scratch to build another "open source AE" or "AI rewrite of X" to chase stars. ArtCraft has already told that story, so a second telling gets read as copying, and the HN skepticism about AI-written large software will land on you first.

How to do it, ranked by how worthwhile:

  1. Fill the gap it admits it can't cover: EffectCraft can't open AE project files and doesn't support AE plugins. A converter that turns .aep into .ecproj / Lottie, or a tool that batch-migrates common AE expressions and presets, hits its users' biggest pain point. Projects like this can find their first users in EffectCraft's issue tracker, its Discord, and the motion YouTubers.
  2. Motion add-ons for agents: every EffectCraft operation is exposed as commands and MCP. A skill or template library that lets Claude / Codex make videos with EffectCraft (intros, caption animations, product demo motion) rides the same wave as the flood of Opus 5.5 video and motion skill repos. The star ceiling is low, but there's almost no bet involved.
  3. Copy the playbook, apply it elsewhere: pick an incumbent everyone is tired of as the foil, ship a complete set, give reposters a ready-made comparison table, and write a README that honestly states completion percentage and known gaps, so skeptics and reviewers have something to write about. This works for any open source project of yours and doesn't require rewriting commercial software.

How to get users: Post in #1 and #2 as well as EffectCraft's own issue tracker, ArtCraft's Discord, r/MotionDesign and r/motiongraphics. Then reach out to the YouTubers who already covered EffectCraft with a fresh angle: "AE projects now import directly" or "make motion graphics from a single sentence with AI." When posting on X, include the name EffectCraft to ride its search traffic.

Earlier is better, ideally before year end: EffectCraft's daily star gains have dropped from 900 to 30 to 70. People still follow it, but fewer each day. It also reached v36 in 0.18 days and iterates very fast; .aep import is the kind of thing it could ship itself at any time (inference).

Signs we've misread it: ① If in December EffectCraft still gains 50+ stars a day and new tutorials keep appearing on YouTube, it has really taken hold in motion design, the add-on ecosystem is bigger than estimated here, and items 1 and 2 should move faster and get a higher grade. ② The reverse: if by late November it drops to single digits a day with PRs piling up unmerged, then even the "open source AE" gap can't keep people, and add-ons aren't worth building. ③ If Adobe acts on trade dress (interface similarity), the whole category is affected and any add-on plans need recalculating.

Why EffectCraft (storytold/effectcraft) took off

Data date: 2026-11-06. Star counts and curves come from our GitHub database (repo_profile / repo_day); X data was looked up live via x live (TikHub); web pages via Jina search and reading.

One line

EffectCraft is an After Effects-style motion graphics and compositing app built by ArtCraft (Storyteller.ai, GitHub org storytold, led by Brandon Thomas). It's written in pure Rust, open source, and mostly written by AI. It didn't take off on its own. 2026-09-30 to 10-01 this team released 7 "clean-room rewrites of the Adobe suite" repos at once, and EffectCraft is the one that targets After Effects. The story "one person with Opus 5.5 agents rewrote the Adobe suite, and it's free" blew up on X, HN and tech media, and EffectCraft got shared along with the rest of the bundle, reaching 8.5k stars. Once the story cooled, its growth fell along with its siblings.

1. Data

  • Repo created 2026-10-01,36 days ago. 8,473 stars / 4,500 forks / 596 open issues / 198 open PRs, latest version v0.18.0 (10-28) (GitHub database, 11-06). As of 11-06, the GitHub API shows 8,497 stars live.
  • Star curve (repo_day): 10-02 had only 5 stars. 10-09 through 2,705 (there are gaps in observations over these 7 days). Single-day peak 906 (10-10), 10-11 up 768,10-12, up 582,10-13, up 607. It has been decaying ever since, 10-16 up 290,10-20, up 119,10-25, up 55; in November it's roughly 30 to 70 per day. Last 7 days up 327, prior 7 days up 468. It's cooling.
  • Roughly 4,290 commits (36 days). One contributor is a claude account (236 commits). greennode analyzed the whole product set: about 77% of commits list Claude Opus 5.5 as a co-author.
  • Within its sibling repos it ranks #9 (GitHub repos): PhotoCraft 77.2k, artcraft main repo 39.0k, PdfCraft 19.7k, FilmCraft 17.6k, WordCraft 17.4k, LightCraft 15.5k, craft-anything 14.6k, VectorCraft 11.4k, EffectCraft 8.5k, CADCraft 7.7k... The whole org totals 264k stars. Nearly every repo's single-day peak falls between 10-10 and 10-13. So this was one wave of traffic, not EffectCraft's own.
  • Fork/star ratio is as high as 53% (new repos with 5k+ stars have a median around 11%; PhotoCraft is 18%). Why forks are this high is still unexplained, see "Uncertain".

EffectCraft claims 308 effects, expressions, 3D cameras and lights, and a render queue, covering the whole feature surface at once

Bottom line: the open-source world has long lacked a layer-based compositor that can really stand in for After Effects. Natron goes the Nuke way, Blender is too general. EffectCraft fills that gap, but what really made it take off is the whole-suite story.

3. Growth: where users came from

Timeline (all evidenced):

  1. 9-30 / 10-01 launch. The founder posted on Reddit r/SaaS: "I've created Open Source 100% Rust clean-room replacements for 7 of Adobe's apps", and also posted on HN. flowtivity wrote: "He announced the suite on Reddit and Hacker News".
  2. 10-04 HN: "ArtCraft Apps – open-source Adobe compatible suite written in Rust", 180 points, 246 comments (hackernews database). The post was later flagged, and the comments split: some said "very broken software produced by AI", others said after testing it "seemed mostly fine".
  3. 10-05 Japanese CG news account @ymt3d introduced the seven-app suite (310 likes, 27k views). 10-07 Phoronix ran a story: "AI Makes 'Open-Source, Clean Room' Implementations Of Adobe Photoshop & Premier In Rust" (57 comments). Ars Technica published "'Software is over': Bold AI developer takes aim at Adobe with open source clones", and CineD and Tedium followed. A HN thread "What ArtCraft's Vibe-Coded Apps Say About Adobe" (tedium, 36 points) appeared on HN 10-08; a Substack post "What Adobe v ArtCraft teaches us" (91 points) appeared on HN 10-25.
  4. From 10-07 to 10-13, a big wave of reposting on X drove the peak (checked via x live, 2026-11-06):
    • @Pirat_Nation: 10-09:24k likes, 1.47M views. Original text: "a developer has released seven free, open-source apps as clean-room alternatives to Adobe's main tools … EffectCraft"
    • @chasmmmmmmmmmmm: 10-09:9,428 likes, 380k views ("THE FULL ADOBE SUITE HAS BEEN REWRITTEN IN RUST")
    • @0xMovez: 10-10:3,481 likes, 275k views ("solo vibe-coder with Opus 5.5 … got mad at Adobe's cancellation fee")
    • @AiwithYasir: 10-08:1,720 likes; @donanimhaber (Turkish tech outlet): 10-07:1,561 likes; @aakashgupta: 10-11:1,351 likes, 279k views; Spanish-language @_guillecasaus: 10-07:959 likes
    • Taiwanese video creator @NeahaigeN, who posts about EffectCraft specifically: 10-07 downloaded EffectCraft to try, "This interface looks just like AE" (316 likes, 22k views)
    • EffectCraft's single-day star peak of 906 stars came on 10-10, right after the Pirat_Nation and chasm posts.
  5. Second-wave spread in the motion design community on YouTube (EffectCraft's own long tail) (YouTube Data API, 11-06): Umair Fareed's Short "Is EffectCraft better than After Effects? The REALITY" has 130k views; AB Animation Studios' review 78k; a Motion Nations video 10-09 with 58k; Nijat Ibrahimli's tutorial 29k. Reddit has a launch post on r/motiongraphics and a review thread on r/MotionDesign. People also reposted on Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn ("306 effects. Free and open source").
  6. Owned channels: the README's top section links to Discord (discord.gg/artcraft) and getartcraft.com/apps; each repo cross-links to "All Crafting Apps"; later they released craft-launcher (5.0k stars) and craft-anything (14.6k) to catch the traffic.
  7. No paid acquisition and no star-buying was found. suspect is empty. Open-source projects don't have a revenue stream to recoup spend anyway. On funding, flowtivity says the money comes from ArtCraft's original AI creative studio (sold per token), while the Crafting Apps themselves are free; the founder says contributors will be paid stipends and bug bounties (not verified in the repos).

4. Why it took off

  • The story itself is compelling enough. "AI rewrites the entire Adobe suite in a week, free and open source" hits three things at once: people are fed up with Adobe subscriptions, people want to know how powerful AI coding really is, and whether clean-room is legal. Most people who reposted hadn't used the software; they were drawn in by the narrative. See the X big-account data above.
  • The suite amplified every individual app. 7 apps launched together, and every repost listed "After Effects → EffectCraft", so EffectCraft rode PhotoCraft's traffic. Peaks for each repo landed on the same day, and EffectCraft's star count is about 11% of PhotoCraft's.
  • Timing. The Opus 5.5 generation of agentic coding was hot (around the same time GitHub had a flood of Opus 5.5 videos and motion-graphics skill repos). ArtCraft happened to serve as a public showcase of "AI can write large-scale software", and HN comments included lines like "this project kind of settles whether one can build large, working software with AI".
  • The open-source gap for After Effects is real. The open-source world has never had a layer-based AE alternative (Natron is node-based and has only 5.6k stars). Motion design YouTubers were willing to make dedicated EffectCraft reviews, which is its own long tail beyond the suite.
  • It looks usable. The UI almost is AE (@NeahaigeN recognized it at a glance), there are native macOS, Windows and Linux installers plus a browser version, and iteration is fast (from launch to v0.18 in 36 days). So the barrier to "download and try it" is low.

5. Differentiation

  • At the product level: the UI, shortcuts, panels and expressions follow AE's mental model (clean-room, no Adobe code or assets); built-in Lottie import/export; project files are diffable JSON (.ecproj); every operation is exposed as a command, drivable via CLI, a JSON control channel, or MCP for AI agents; encoding doesn't depend on FFmpeg; there is a browser version.
  • How it was built: 8 parallel Opus 5.5 agents developed it, gated by test oracles (flowtivity described the same approach for PhotoCraft). The README admits the feature checklist covers about 91%, and it's about 45% ready for professional production; not recommended for commercial delivery.
  • Did differentiation drive this? Mostly not. What brought in the stars was the "whole suite + AI-written + positioned against Adobe" narrative and how it was launched. EffectCraft's own differentiators (AE-style layer compositing, agent-drivable) only earned it a bit of long-tail YouTube attention in the motion design community. Its star count sitting mid-to-low among its siblings also points to this.

6. Visibility and copycats

  • Widely covered: Ars Technica, Phoronix, CineD, Tedium, 36kr and others; HN 180 points; a single X post with 1.47M views; reviews with six-figure views on YouTube. No revenue data needed (open source, free).
  • Plenty of copycats, but what they copy is the pattern: AI clean-room rewrites of a commercial app (mostly pure Rust, still using the *Craft naming), not EffectCraft itself (a GitHub repo created in October): IPedrax/BIMCraft (Revit, 949 stars), bherbruck/solvecraft (Fusion 360,365), occupysaas/zeroauthy and salescompel (Auth0, Salesforce), mailcraft (Outlook, more than one), notecraft, scriptcraft, matcraft, mirvoxtm/minnamate (Adobe Animate), lemonadesaltbagel/crab ("Clean Rebuild of Anything's Behavior"). Riding the name: craftsuite.net runs an unofficial downloader (HN Show 10-11), and filmcraft.tools and artcraft.tools also posted Shows on HN (10-27, affiliation unverified). There are also malicious "cracked installer" repos borrowing the AE name (like archivethrushhook/Adobe-After-Effects). They have nothing to do with EffectCraft, but they show the term is hot.
  • Same-category clones built specifically as After Effects clean-room replacements that have gained real scale: none found.

7. What others can learn

  • Releases as a full suite, covering a big incumbent's entire product line at once. Each copy pushes the whole comparison table, so the individual products pull traffic from each other. A launcher and a tutorial repo then catch the traffic that follows.
  • Uses a incumbent everyone hates (Adobe subscriptions) as the foil, plus a timely story (AI agents can write large software). Media and big accounts spread it for you.
  • The README is honest (parity percentages, not recommended for production, a gaps doc). That holds up when HN and the press push back, and it gives reviewers something to write about.
  • Makes the app drivable by AI (CLI / MCP), riding the agent wave.

8. Uncertain

  • Why fork/star is 53% so high: likely contributors and agents forking heavily and opening PRs (198 open PRs, plus talk of stipends and bounties), or people forking to let their own agents tinker. I didn't pull fork details (the GitHub API hit rate limits at the time).
  • Actual usage is unknown. I didn't check release download counts (rate limited), and YouTube reviews are mixed on stability.
  • There's no day-by-day data between 10-02 and 10-09, so I can't separate how much came from HN (10-04), Phoronix (10-07), and X big accounts (from 10-07 on).

  • Apart from a few players like Natron, Motion Canvas and Remotion, most competitors' scale is unverified.
