# "Someone rebuilt Pro Tools and open-sourced it": SoundCraft's 4100 stars, mostly borrowed

**What it is** An open-source audio recording and mixing app written with AI as part of the ArtCraft suite, modeled on how Pro Tools works. Free and cross-platform.

**Why it took off** The parent brand ArtCraft's "AI clones Adobe" blew up, and it rode the wave. Then the headline "someone rebuilt Pro Tools and open-sourced it" got two videos from a beatmaker channel, bringing it into the music production scene.

**C** **How you could follow** If you want to try, pick a famous software that users resent for its subscription and that hasn't been cloned yet (say Ableton or FL Studio). Stabilize one core workflow first, then get a mid-tier music YouTuber to premiere it, and don't use their trademark in the name.

Grade C: most of its stars come from the parent brand's traffic, which followers can't get. The "name-drop clone + vertical music YouTube" playbook is already being used heavily by this suite, and it carries trademark and legal risk. Copying it alone is unlikely to get the same stars. Public / widely discussed

On the evening of Oct 10, 2026, beatmaker channel Busy Works Beats posted a video titled "Someone Rebuilt Pro Tools and Made it Open Source?!". The description had a single GitHub link: storytold/soundcraft. As of 11-06 the video has 105k views and 300 comments, and the most liked comment is "ANYTHING that hurts Adobe pleases me" (132 likes). This AI-written pure-Rust recording app got about 4100 stars and 2500 forks in 30 days since the repo was created, and its release packages were downloaded 1.35M times. But viewed alongside its sibling projects, most of those stars are not its own. This piece covers why it took off, and which parts of "AI clones a famous software to get stars" you can learn and which you can't.

### What it is

A digital audio workstation (DAW), the software used for recording, editing and mixing. The repo description reads "open-source, clean-room rewrite of Avid Pro Tools, in pure Rust". Pro Tools is the industry standard in recording studios and charges a subscription. SoundCraft copies its workflow: the Edit window, Mix window, several editing modes and terms like AudioSuite are all the same. The README says "people who have spent years in this workflow should already know where things are".

It runs on macOS, Windows, Linux, FreeBSD and in the browser. It supports VST3 / CLAP / AU plugins, 9.1.6 surround sound and video tracks, and every operation can be driven from the command line or by an AI agent. The README has an orange badge at the top: pre-alpha.

It isn't a one-person project. It belongs to the "Crafting Apps" suite from ArtCraft (storytold organization, founder Brandon Thomas), which uses AI to "clean-room clone" commercial software one by one: photocraft for Photoshop, wordcraft for Word, and also cadcraft, deckcraft, filmcraft and so on. SoundCraft is one of 10-07 same batch of repos. The first commit was in 10-06; through 11-06 it has 1462 commits and 15 releases (v0.3.0 to v0.17.1), roughly one release every two days.

### Where the stars came from: first the parent brand, then the music scene

**The parent brand blew up, and it rode the wave.** 10-04, "ArtCraft Apps – open-source Adobe compatible suite" hit Hacker News, scoring 180 points. 10-07 Phoronix covered it. 10-08, tech channel SavvyNik posted "This Is What Happens When AI Reverse-Engineers Corporate Software", which by 11-06 had 640k views and 3200 comments. The top comment was "We used to be Pirates, now we are reverse engineers" (1454 likes). The official site and the ArtCraft launcher list SoundCraft within the family bundle, so everyone who installs the launcher sees it.

The evidence is in the peak dates: SoundCraft's biggest single-day gain was 517 stars, on 10-13. The single-day highs for wordcraft, gridcraft, cadcraft, deckcraft and artcraft were also all on 10-13, and several photocraft-type repos on 10-11. Its peak is the suite's peak. Among the suite's 16 main repos, its 4099 stars rank second from last. photocraft has 77k and wordcraft has 17k.

**The other branch is music production on YouTube.** After Busy Works Beats' 105k-view video, 10-15 posted "Open Source Pro Tools Just Got an Update!" and got 67k views. A sequel is possible because it ships updates fast; a commenter wrote "They have multiple updates daily". A few smaller channels also reviewed it, with views ranging from a few hundred to 3K. This branch doesn't bring GitHub developers. It brings editing and recording users who want "free Pro Tools". That explains why it has few stars but 1.35M downloads (cumulative across 15 release packages, GitHub, 11-06). The download count includes repeat counts from the launcher's auto-updates, so don't read it as installs.

**The hate is advertising it too.** On r/Reaper someone asked "end of paid DAWs?"; on r/linuxaudio the verdict was "Awful. Impossible to use. A perfect copy of Pro Tools!"; a post on r/musicproduction was titled "I tried SoundCraft… It's broken."; a KVR forum thread got "(controversial)" added to its title, and someone in it called it a scam; the FreeBSD forum dismissed it as a "vibe-coded DAW." Then there's the trademark issue: Soundcraft, the British mixing console brand, belongs to Harman (owned by Samsung), and someone pointed this out in issue #19 on 10-08. Every objection sent more people to look. guitarbomb 10-19 wrote "The Free Rust DAW Disrupting Music Production," and it got reshared into Facebook groups and Instagram.

One detail: 11-06's README body no longer mentions "Pro Tools" or "Avid". It only talks about "the workflow audio engineers already know". The name-drop is only left in the repo description. Whether that's to avoid legal risk is just inference. Under the second Busy Works Beats video, someone warned: "Calling it open source Pro Tools, Avid will almost certainly come knocking."

### Who it's competing with

Free and open-source DAWs are not scarce (GitHub stars, around 11-06):

| Project | What it is | Scale | Versus SoundCraft |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ardour | Established open-source professional DAW, C++ | 5412 stars, 20 years in the making | Closest to "open-source Pro Tools" and mature; SoundCraft's star count nearly caught up to it within 30 days |
| Audacity / Tenacity | Audio editor | 18971 / 828 stars | Best known, but not a complete recording and mixing DAW |
| LMMS / Zrythm / Qtractor | Leans toward composition or the Linux crowd | 10609 / 3185 / 607 stars | No Pro Tools-style workflow |
| Meadowlark | Also a Rust DAW | 1498 stars | Started 2021 years ago, still no finished product |
| REAPER | Commercial software, 60 USD | Plenty of indie users | Cheap and stable; r/Reaper users don't think much of SoundCraft |
| GarageBand, Waveform Free, Cakewalk | Free DAWs from big companies | Huge | "Free" by itself isn't scarce |

What's actually new about SoundCraft is only two things: it openly calls itself a Pro Tools clone, and the story "an AI wrote it in a month". The features aren't why it took off. Community feedback is mostly "broken", and no professional users have been seen switching over.

It already has imitators: soundcraft.live hosts its browser version as an online DAW; EasyRunCraft collected 13 sites including soundcraft.run, hosts Craft-series apps, and then sells AI agents; and a group of guide sites sit around the suite chasing search traffic.

### What you can learn

- **Name-dropping an expensive, closed-source big-brand piece of software makes the headline spread on its own.** "Someone rebuilt Pro Tools / Adobe and open-sourced it" needs no explanation. A comment under the Busy Works Beats video with 25 likes changed one word in the title: "Someone Rebuilt Ableton Live and Made it Open Source". Viewers are already waiting for the next one.

- **YouTubers in niche communities can get a GitHub project in front of non-developers.** Releases come fast, and the creator can then film another "just updated" video.

- **The suite play: when one takes off, its sibling repos get traffic too.** This is the hardest part to copy. It depends on the reputation and launcher ArtCraft already has.

- **The reputation backlash comes quickly.** Professional users complain as soon as they try it. That barely hurts star counts, but it makes long-term users and contributors hard to win.

### If it were you

**My take:** there's something to learn here, but copying it isn't worth much. Of SoundCraft's 4100 stars, most came from the ArtCraft suite, which a standalone project can't get. The part it earned itself rests on the line "free Pro Tools", and the "AI clones a famous app" angle has already been used by this single suite across more than a dozen categories in one month.

**Who it suits:** developers who already have contacts in a creative scene (music, design, video) and can get in-scene YouTubers to cover them, or who already have a well-known project and want to open a second door with "clone X".

**Who it doesn't suit:** solo indie devs trying to build a name from zero with this move. The name of the app you're cloning is itself a legal risk (trademark, and the legal teams at companies like Avid and Adobe), and professional users' bad reviews will stick to your name.

**How to do it:** pick a category where users hate subscriptions and nobody has cloned it yet, such as Ableton Live or FL Studio; commenters are already asking for those by name. Before you start, check whether ArtCraft's app list already covers it. Name the competitor in the title, but keep the project name and README your own, and don't use the rival's trademark as your name. Get one core workflow solid first (say, only "recording + editing"), instead of spreading features thin and ending up "broken" like SoundCraft. Ship a version every two or three days, and leave content creators material for follow-ups.

**How to get users:** watch mid-tier YouTube channels run by beatmakers and mixing tutorial makers, and email them directly with a working build and demo project. Then post "I made a…" in communities like r/WeAreTheMusicMakers. Hacker News and developer circles are the second stop.

**When to do it:** the sooner the better. The novelty of "AI clones commercial software" only really took off in October 2026, and in another quarter or two readers will probably be tired of it (inference).

**What would show I got it wrong:** if SoundCraft is forced to rename in the next month or two, or the ArtCraft suite is taken down after a lawyer's letter, that means the legal cost of the "name-the-competitor clone" route is higher than it looks. If a standalone clone without a parent brand gets covered by in-scene YouTubers and still only picks up a few hundred stars, that means the borrowed part of those 4100 stars is bigger than I estimated.

## Why storytold/soundcraft (SoundCraft) took off

> Channel: GitHub; research day 2026-11-06. Data sources: our GitHub repo (repo_profile, 2026-11-06), data cards, the GitHub API (repo / releases / commits / contributors / issues), web search (Jina / Exa / Brave), the YouTube Data API (videos endpoint), and HN Algolia. A report on craft-launcher from the same org already exists (out/gh_storytold__craft-launcher.md); the parent brand background follows that report and isn't repeated here.

### One line

SoundCraft is the audio app in ArtCraft's (storytold, founder Brandon Thomas) "Crafting Apps" suite: a pure-Rust DAW written with AI (agents like Claude Code), openly benchmarked against Avid Pro Tools, even borrowing terms like the Edit / Mix windows, Shuffle/Slip/Spot/Grid modes, and AudioSuite. Its 4100 stars **mostly came along with the parent brand's breakout** : it peaked the same day as its sibling repos (10-13), and among the suite's 16 main repos it ranks second from the bottom in stars. The part it earned itself is **music production YouTube** : roughly 170k views across two Busy Works Beats videos. That channel brought in not GitHub developers but recording and composition users looking for "free Pro Tools". So it has few stars, yet the release downloads reach 1.35M. Reactions in the professional audio community (KVR, r/Reaper, r/linuxaudio, the FreeBSD forum) are mostly mockery and "can't use it".

### 1. Data

- First commit 2026-10-06 by Brandon Thomas; repo created 10-07 08:31, in the same batch as wordcraft, gridcraft, cadcraft, and deckcraft (repos created on 10-07 one after another). By 11-06 it had 1462 commits and 15 releases (v0.3.0 → v0.17.1), about one version every two days (GitHub API).

- Stars and forks: 4099 stars, 2512 forks (data card, 11-06; live GitHub API 4118 / 2521). Single-day peak +517, on 10-13. Last 7 days +210, the prior 7 days +331, so it's slowing.

- **The peak wasn't its own** : wordcraft, gridcraft, cadcraft, deckcraft, and artcraft also hit their single-day highs on 10-13, and photocraft, pdfcraft, and filmcraft on 10-11 (github repo_profile). SoundCraft's peak is the whole suite's peak. Among storytold's 16 main repos it has 4099 stars, just slightly more than figcraft, placing it near the bottom (photocraft 77k, wordcraft 17k, cadcraft 7.7k).

- fork / star = 61%, high. But that's shared across the whole suite: deckcraft 58%, designcraft 69%, gridcraft 47% (GitHub repos). The cause is the suite's "AI + community PR" pipeline: 803 PRs, 486 merged, the repo has AGENTS.md, PRs are reviewed by CodeRabbit, and top contributors include echelon with 606 commits, aiongg 139, grovebit 116 (GitHub API). So the high fork ratio isn't a sign of unusually strong "want to modify it" intent; it comes from the collaboration workflow itself.

- **Downloads tell a clearer story than stars** : the assets of 15 releases have been downloaded 1,345,451 times in total. The last three versions (v0.16.0 / v0.17.0 / v0.17.1) each got 7–85k (GitHub API, 11-06). That includes repeat counts from ArtCraft Launcher's auto-updates, so don't read it as a user count.

- There are 606 issues, many about installation and audio I/O, e.g. #1162 "0.14.0 upgrade: install error 1603".

### 2. Competitors

| Name | Where | Launched | Scale | How it differs from this one |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Avid Pro Tools (including the free Pro Tools Intro) | Big-company features | 1989 / Intro around 2022 years ago | Industry standard, subscription-based | It copies the workflow and terminology, but it's free, open source, and runs on five platforms plus the browser. It can't open .ptx sessions and has no AAX plugins. |
| REAPER | Others (commercial) | 2006 | A large indie user base, 60 USD license | Cheap and mature. r/Reaper users are broadly skeptical of SoundCraft ("speedrun in a month"). |
| Ardour | Open source | 2005(GitHub 2013) | 5412 stars | The veteran open-source project closest to "open-source Pro Tools", in C++ and mature. SoundCraft's star count after 30 days is close to what it took 20 years to build. |
| Audacity / Tenacity | Open source | 2000 / 2022 | 18971 / 828 stars | It's an audio editor, not a full DAW, but it has the highest name recognition. |
| LMMS, Zrythm, Qtractor | Open source | 2004–2019 | 10609 / 3185 / 607 stars | Skew toward composition or the Linux crowd, with no Pro Tools-style recording and mixing workflow. |
| Meadowlark | Open source (Rust) | 2021 | 1498 stars | Also a Rust DAW, but progressing slowly with no finished product. SoundCraft got its breadth in a month by leaning on AI. |
| Tracktion Waveform Free, Cakewalk/Sonar, GarageBand | Big-company features / others | Already around | Huge | Free DAWs are no longer scarce. |
| soundcraft.live / EasyRunCraft (soundcraft.run redirects there) | Web | 2026-10 | Not verified | A third party hosts the suite's WASM build as an online DAW. EasyRunCraft bundles 13 Craft apps and sells a built-in AI agent. It's a parasite, not official. |

Takeaway: "free / open-source DAW" is a red ocean, with Ardour and Audacity already there. SoundCraft's only new angle is "openly a clean-room Pro Tools clone", plus the "AI wrote it in a month" story.

### 3. Growth tactics (where users come from)

1. **The parent brand's spike (confirmed)** : 10-04 HN "ArtCraft Apps – open-source Adobe compatible suite" 180 points; 10-07 Phoronix coverage; 10-08 SavvyNik video "This Is What Happens When AI Reverse-Engineers Corporate Software" with 642,460 views (YouTube API); 10-12 Zack Heene "What Nobody's Telling You About the Man Behind ArtCraft" with 37,395 views. The whole suite peaked together between 10-11 and 10-13, and SoundCraft's +517 came inside that peak. The official site getartcraft.com/apps and ArtCraft Launcher list it in the bundle, so everyone who installs the launcher sees it.

2. **Music-production YouTube (confirmed, unique to this channel)** : Busy Works Beats (beatmaker channel) 10-10 "Someone Rebuilt Pro Tools and Made it Open Source?!" 105,143 views, 300 comments; 10-15 also posted "Open Source Pro Tools Just Got an Update!" 67,139 views. There are also some smaller channels: a Tech Storm review 2,973, a LookOnThisGit short 869, "How To Connect Sound Craft With Claude Code" 89, and "I Found a FREE Pro Tools Clone and It Actually Works" (view count unverified). Trari called that week at Busy Works Beats the "software-remake week".

3. **Music forums and Reddit (confirmed, mostly negative)** : r/Reaper "new free open source Protools clone... end of paid DAWs?", r/linuxaudio ("Awful. Impossible to use. A perfect copy of Pro Tools!"), r/musicproduction "I tried SoundCraft... It's broken.", r/ArtCraftAI "SoundCraft is kind of broken". On KVR forums a thread with 10-14 posts was retitled "(controversial)", and someone called it a "scam". There's also discussion on audiosex.pro and the FreeBSD forums (10-09, "Vibe-coded DAW"). The controversy itself is driving exposure.

4. **SEO article sites (confirmed)** : guitarbomb.com 10-19 "The Free Rust DAW Disrupting Music Production", which was then reshared into Facebook groups and Instagram; enlisted.directory "SoundCraft vs Pro Tools" (10-08); a guide at pasqualepillitteri.it; artcrafttutorial.com, photocrafthub.com, accuratereviews.com; and Japanese ossmatch.com and Chinese pwwt.cn. Most of these are parasite sites built to capture traffic around the suite.

5. **Package managers and mirrors** : SourceForge hosts soundcraft.mirror. Official signed installers cover macOS, Windows (x64, x86, Arm), Linux (AppImage, deb, rpm, Flatpak), FreeBSD, and WASM (per README).

6. No evidence of paid acquisition. The local x-radar corpus has no "soundcraft" hits in the last 40 days, which means the corpus didn't capture it. It doesn't mean nobody is discussing it on X. There are no standalone HN posts about SoundCraft.

### 4. Why it took off

- The parent brand's traffic is the main cause. It peaked the same day as sibling repos like wordcraft, and its star count ranks near the bottom of the suite, which suggests most stars came from people clicking through the bundle out of curiosity.

- "Free open-source Pro Tools" is an easy pitch to spread. Pro Tools is the studio standard, expensive, and subscription-based, so "someone rewrote Pro Tools and open-sourced it" is a natural YouTube title. Busy Works Beats' two videos together got about 170k views and pulled it out of the developer community.

- Controversy pushed it along: trademark collision (the UK mixing-console brand Soundcraft belongs to Harman/Samsung, and issue #19 raised it on 10-08), "vibe-coded", "scam", "clean-room or reverse-engineered?". Every objection generated more discussion.

- Fast iteration keeps the story going. A new version roughly every two days is why Busy Works Beats could post a second "Just Got an Update!" video. Being agent-native (a JSON control protocol and `soundcraft-cli mcp`) also attracts "Claude helps you make music" content.

### 5. Differentiation

- Versus Ardour and Audacity: it explicitly copies the Pro Tools workflow and terminology ("your hands should already know where things are"). Its feature set is broad: 10 inserts and sends, VCAs, playlist take comping, 9.1.6 and Ambisonics, video tracks, notation, CLAP/VST3/AU. It's all Rust, runs on five platforms plus the browser, and every action can be driven by an AI agent through the command line or MCP.

- Versus Pro Tools: it's free and needs no account, but it can't open .ptx sessions, doesn't support AAX, and has a poor reputation for stability and audio I/O.

- The differentiation is one reason it took off, but only because **the "Pro Tools clone" positioning** made titles easy to write and videos easy to make. The features themselves aren't the reason. Community feedback is mostly "broken", and the stars and downloads come mainly from curiosity and suite cross-promotion, not from pros actually switching. The agent-native angle is new, but so far it has only supported a small amount of content (the related videos have just 89 views).

### 6. Visibility / copycats

- Visibility: the parent brand has been widely discussed (HN, Phoronix, SavvyNik at 640k views, Tatler, and others). SoundCraft itself has broken out in a small way within the music world (Busy Works Beats, KVR, several subreddits, guitarbomb). It's free and open source, with no revenue.

- Copycats: soundcraft.live (a third-party hosted online version that also connects to the mcp.artcraftweb.org gateway); EasyRunCraft (took over soundcraft.run and 13 other sites, hosts Craft apps and sells an AI agent); and a batch of SEO guide sites. Also, the "AI clean-room clone of a commercial app" pattern is already being copied both inside and outside the suite.

### 7. Takeaways

- "AI clones a famous commercial app and names it in the title" is a cheap way to generate buzz, and it works better the more expensive and closed the category is (Pro Tools, Adobe, Office). But with professional users, the reputation damage comes quickly.

- The suite playbook: when one app blows up, sibling repos built by the same group get a share of the traffic. New apps listed on the official site and in the launcher can pick up existing visitors.

- Niche YouTube creators (here, beatmakers) can get a GitHub project into the hands of non-developers, and a second "update" video can ride the wave again.

- A parasitic position: hosting the open-source WASM build as an online tool and adding paid AI (EasyRunCraft) is a monetization path others are already taking.

### 8. Uncertain

- How much of the 1.35M downloads are repeat counts from launcher self-updates is unknown, so the real install base is unknown.

- Trademark risk: Harman's Soundcraft is a registered mark (USPTO shows it active, per the comments on issue #19), so a rename is a real possibility.

- Whether the "clean-room" claim holds up, and whether Avid will act.

- Early daily star counts (10-07 to 10-16) are missing: the stargazer endpoint returned 404, and our database only started recording on 10-28, so we can't directly line up Busy Works Beats' 10-10 video with star counts.

- The Reddit post bodies were blocked by a human-verification check, so only the search snippets were visible.
