# A "free AI-coded Illustrator" 37 days 11k stars: the stars came from the whole "Adobe clone" buzz, not the product itself

**What it is** An open source, free vector drawing app that looks just like Adobe Illustrator. Its code was mostly written by AI, it runs on desktop and in the browser, and it lets Claude draw directly.

**Why it took off** "Someone cloned the entire Adobe suite with AI" hit Hacker News and Gizmodo, and the whole suite blew up together. Plus people were fed up with Adobe subscriptions, and YouTube channels that teach Illustrator covered it, with single videos pulling 40–60K views.

**C** **How you can follow it** Don't build another Illustrator clone. Copy the topic-picking approach: choose a pro software that everyone knows, that people hate for its pricing, and that nobody has copied yet. Mirror its interaction, ship a browser version first, then get the YouTubers who review that software to cover yours.

C grade: the stars mostly rode the parent brand's whole "Adobe clone" buzz and a few hundred people's dev investment, so followers can't get that. Similar AI-written Illustrator alternatives are all in the single-digit stars, and the buzz is fading. The topic-picking method is worth learning, but copying the product isn't worth it. VectorCraft is an open source vector drawing app. Its interface, tools, and shortcuts copy Adobe Illustrator, its code was mostly written by Claude, it's pure Rust, and it runs directly in the browser. The repo was created in Sep 30, and by Nov 6 it had 11,397 stars and 5,517 forks. But it's only one piece of a whole set of "Adobe alternatives" ArtCraft released at once, and its star curve moves almost in lockstep with its sibling projects. If you want to build an open source project that earns stars, you can learn from it how to pick a topic. But building another Illustrator clone will almost certainly get no stars.

### A person who had used Illustrator for 37 years

2026 年 10 月 12 日,YouTube 频道 Branchus Creations 发了一条视频,标题是「I've used Adobe Illustrator for 37 years. Is this the end?」(我用了 37 年 Illustrator,它要完了吗?)。视频说明里有一句:「这期封面就是用 VectorCraft 做的。」到 11 月 6 日这条视频 55,014 次播放。评论区点赞最多的一条(143 赞)只有一句:

> "Adobe has no customers, only hostages."

A reply said they'd been a graphic designer for 40 years, retiring at the end of the month, and can't afford the full Adobe bundle after retiring; another said they volunteer at a village archive, and switching away from Adobe would cut their costs by half.

The same day, someone opened a thread on signs101, a forum where sign makers gather: "Vectorcraft. Is anyone using it?" The opening line read: "If you haven't heard: some people have remade the entire Adobe suite, and it's free." The second reply said: "I've seen it on Facebook several times."

These two things show VectorCraft's real situation: what people are talking about is mainly "someone cloned the whole Adobe suite with AI," and VectorCraft is the Illustrator piece of that.

### What it is

ArtCraft is a set of "Craft Apps" from Brandon Thomas's company, each app benchmarked against an Adobe product: PhotoCraft against Photoshop, PDFCraft against Acrobat, FilmCraft against Premiere, and VectorCraft against Illustrator. VectorCraft's first commit was in Sep 30; it was renamed from DrawCraft the next day, and v0.1.0 shipped in Oct 2.

Its README opens with the selling point: "You already know how to use it." The layout, tool names, and shortcuts all follow the Illustrator setup, with Pathfinder, live blends, and perspective grids implemented. It imports and exports .ai files (the PDF-compatible kind). There are native builds for Windows, macOS, and Linux, and the browser version runs on WebAssembly, with a first load of about 21 MB. The README even has a section on "how to use it in Claude Code": it ships with MCP, and the example artworks were all drawn by an agent through the same commands.

Development speed is wild: 37 days, 8,751 commits, 3,401 merged PRs, 24 releases (11-05 now at v0.21.1), 200 contributors, and PRs reviewed by AI (GitHub, 11-06). The fork count is about half the star count, and most forks were made to submit PRs, not to build a separate project.

### How the stars grew

The peak single day was Oct 11, +1,093 stars. PhotoCraft, PDFCraft, and FilmCraft also peaked that same day. After that the whole set cooled off together: VectorCraft gained +409 over the last 7 days and +583 over the first 7 days, and on Nov 6 it only got +37 (GitHub daily stars).

| Date | Stars | New stars in the first 7 days |
|---|---|---|
| 10-17 | 9,386 | — |
| 10-24 | 10,508 | +1,122 |
| 10-31 | 11,060 | +552 |
| 11-06 | 11,397 | +337 |

Traffic came from these places:

**The whole Adobe-clone story is the main cause.** On Oct 4, "ArtCraft Apps – open-source Adobe compatible suite" hit Hacker News with 180 points and 246 comments. On Oct 7 Gizmodo ran "Someone Vibe Coded a Free Knockoff of Adobe Creative Suite." Phoronix, big AI accounts on X, and Reddit all picked it up. On Oct 25 another HN post, "What Adobe v ArtCraft teaches us," got 94 points.

**The design world's own YouTube channels.** The ones covering VectorCraft weren't tech channels but Illustrator tutorial and logo-design channels: Kru Mark Tutorials, "VectorCraft? Someone Vibe Coded a Free Adobe Illustrator Clone," 58,245 views (10-10); the Branchus Creations video above, 55,014; Logos By Nick's review after a week of use, 53,486 (10-28); and Kru Mark's follow-up "Affinity vs VectorCraft," 40,175 (10-25) (YouTube, 11-06). This route was VectorCraft's own: because it looks like Illustrator, people made videos specifically about it.

**Facebook, Instagram, and industry forums.** People asked about it on sign-making forums, guitar pedal forums (PedalPCB), and beginner laser-engraving groups, and several said they first saw it on Facebook or Instagram.

**Parasite sites and comparison pages.** vectorcraft.app directly hosts the official web version, while vectorcraft.run and aivector.app publish "free Illustrator alternative" reviews. Sourceforge and Slashdot have "Inkscape vs VectorCraft" comparison pages.

**The AI developer crowd.** "Having Claude draw editable vector graphics" drew some attention among developers, but the related videos only got a few hundred to a thousand views and brought few stars.

No paid acquisition seen.

### Why now

- **People were already sick of subscriptions.** Illustrator costs $22.99 a month for a single license, and small business owners doing signs, laser engraving, and logos are sensitive to that money. Forum posts open by asking "Can I skip the Adobe subscription by switching?" Most comments on the Branchus video were basically cursing Adobe.

- **Copying the interface happened to avoid AI's weakest spot.** Designer Leo Wattenberg wrote a blog post in Oct 25 arguing that interaction design is what AI is worst at, so copying an existing product skips that step. For users, existing users don't have to relearn anything, which Inkscape and Graphite can't offer. One HN user said it was "more usable than Inkscape even if it's incomplete right now."

- **Opens right in the browser.** Review videos and parasite sites both use the web version as the entry point, so people can try it without installing anything.

- **The speed is the news itself.** "An alpha built in 11 days looks like this" kept coming up in reviews.

### But it didn't win on its own

The repos under the same organization, ranked by stars (11-06): PhotoCraft 77,165, ArtCraft 38,956, PDFCraft 19,683, FilmCraft 17,593, WordCraft 17,388, LightCraft 15,534, Craft-Anything 14,636, and only then VectorCraft 11,397. Even as clones, the Photoshop one has nearly 7 times its stars. Star counts track how famous the cloned software is and how hot the whole story is, and depend little on how well VectorCraft itself is built.

There are dissenting voices in the design world too. On signs101, a long-time open source user said cloning the old paradigm means missing better approaches (like non-destructive editing), and that the project's rapid iteration depends on heavy use of Claude: "It was supposed to free us from Adobe's shackles, and now we just have a different set." Under the Logos By Nick video, someone said they still use Inkscape because it's built around SVG, while VectorCraft rewrites the SVG code on export.

### Who else is doing the same thing

| Project | Scale | Compared with VectorCraft |
|---|---|---|
| Adobe Illustrator | Industry standard | The thing being cloned; VectorCraft is free, open source, and runs in the browser, but is still alpha |
| Inkscape | The most mature open source vector tool (2003) | Mature, with its own interaction model, SVG-native |
| Graphite | 27,843 stars, built over 6 years, +69 in the last 7 days | Also Rust, browser-first, and takes a node-based route; VectorCraft got 40% of its 6-year star count in one month |
| Affinity Designer | Free for individuals from 2025-10 | Mature, but needs a Canva account, closed source, no Linux build |
| Penpot | 62,109 stars | Built for UI design and aimed at Figma, not an illustration tool |
| SVG-Edit, Boxy SVG, Photopea | Small to medium | A lightweight web tool, without Illustrator's whole feature set |

Copycats have already appeared: Android ports (vectorcraft-android, CraftApps-Android), Docker packages, NixOS packages. Those building their own "AI-written Illustrator alternative" include Forma, Aether-Vector, LucentEdit (also with MCP), and vectorforge. Each of these independent projects has only single-digit stars.

### If it were you

**Bottom line:** Don't build another Illustrator clone. That spot is taken, and every late entrant sits at single-digit stars. What's worth learning is the topic choice: find a pro tool everyone knows and everyone resents for its price, rebuild its interaction with AI at speed, then ship a version people can try straight in the browser.

**Who it's for:** developers who are heavy users of some paid pro tool, know where it's expensive or clunky, and can write code hard with AI.

**Who it's not for:** anyone trying to go head-to-head as "yet another Adobe alternative." ArtCraft's org alone has 33 repos that copy nearly all of Adobe. It's also not for people with no audience of their own who only plan to post on GitHub. VectorCraft's separate traffic came from YouTube in the design community, not from developers.

**How to do it:**

1. Pick a pro tool outside Adobe whose users are squeezed by subscriptions or high prices, and that ArtCraft doesn't cover yet. A smaller industry is fine, as long as people vent about it on forums. (Inference: niche hand-craft tools like sign-making, laser engraving, embroidery, and Cricut software are candidates. Search forums for complaints before you decide.)

2. The first screen should say "you already know how to use it": the layout and shortcuts copied as-is, the open-source license stated clearly, and the README making it plain that it's an independent implementation, not reverse-engineered.

3. Build the browser version first. People should be able to open a link and try it right away. Reviewers and sharers depend on that.

4. To break through on one point, you could do just the piece VectorCraft does poorly, like truly SVG-native export without rewriting code, or path output for cutters and engravers. Its users raise these directly in the comments.

**How to get users:** don't just post on HN. VectorCraft's own traffic came from YouTube channels that teach the paid software and from industry forums and Facebook groups. Once you ship, email the YouTubers who teach that paid software and ask them to film an "is the free alternative any good?" episode. At the same time, post on industry forums with a title copied from the signs101 thread: "A free alternative to X, anyone using it?"

**Timing:** the "AI clones pro software" topic peaked in October and is fading week by week now. The sooner the next clone target appears, the easier it is to get coverage. Ideally ship before year-end (inference).

**Signs you misread it:** a month after launch, no tutorial creators in that niche have picked it up and no forum threads have replied. Only developers are starring it. That means the software you chose isn't famous enough or its users aren't hurting enough. If obscure Illustrator alternatives like Forma and LucentEdit also climb over the next month, then demand for "Illustrator alternatives" itself is still there, and you should go back and build the piece VectorCraft does poorly.

## Why storytold/vectorcraft (VectorCraft) took off

> Channel: GitHub; research day 2026-11-06. Data sources: our github repo (repo_profile / data card), GitHub API, YouTube Data API, web search (Jina / Exa), HN Algolia. The same org's craft-launcher already has a report (out/gh_storytold__craft-launcher.md), which covers the parent brand background, so it's only briefly mentioned here.

### One line

VectorCraft is the Illustrator-competitor app in ArtCraft's (storytold, Brandon Thomas's Learning Machines LLC) "Craft App Suite." It's built mostly by AI (Claude) and written in pure Rust. Its stars come almost entirely from the parent brand's early-October wave of "someone cloned all of Adobe with AI." Its single-day peak (10-11, +1093) landed on the same day as photocraft, pdfcraft, and filmcraft. It has two advantages of its own: first, it copies Illustrator's layout, tools, and shortcuts, so veterans need no relearning; second, it runs straight in the browser. Those two points got it singled out in reviews from designers, sign makers, and laser engravers (several YouTube reviews at 40k to 60k views each). But inside the suite it only ranks about #7 (11.4k stars, photocraft 77k). It was carried by the suite, not won on its own merits.

### 1. Data

- The repo was created 2026-09-30 13:43 (first commit 09-30 "initial commit," by Brandon Thomas). 10-01 It was renamed from DrawCraft to VectorCraft (commit "Rename DrawCraft → VectorCraft").

- 2026-11-06:11,435 stars, 5,534 forks, 1,113 open issues / PRs (GitHub API). Over the last 7 days +409, the first 7 days +583, and the daily gain has dropped to about 37 (data card). gain_30d 11,383, meaning nearly all of its stars came in the October month.

- Development intensity is very high: 37 commits in 8,751 days, 3,401 merged PRs, 1,939 issues, and 200 contributors (GitHub API). The most commits come from bflatastic (4,635), dotCooCoo (1,551), and echelon (Brandon Thomas, 267), plus bots like cursoragent. PRs are reviewed by CodeRabbit, and the repo has an AGENTS.md. The fork-to-star ratio is close to 0.48, so most forks exist to submit PRs, not to build something different.

- 24 releases (v0.1.0 is 10-02, v0.21.1 is 11-05), with 2,390,991 cumulative asset downloads (GitHub API). Its star count is about 7x photocraft's, yet its release downloads are only about 4.17M. The high downloads-per-star ratio likely comes from the official launcher auto-downloading and updating from release assets (unverified), so don't read it as a user count.

- Its place in the suite (github repo_profile, 2026-11-06): photocraft 77,165 > artcraft 38,956 > pdfcraft 19,683 > filmcraft 17,593 > wordcraft 17,388 > lightcraft 15,534 > craft-anything 14,636 > **vectorcraft 11,397** > effectcraft 8,473 > cadcraft 7,695 … All the sibling repos are slowing down this week, and vectorcraft is no exception (409 vs 583).

### 2. Competitors

| Name | Where | Launched | Scale | How it differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Adobe Illustrator | Big-company features | 1987 | The industry standard. Creative Cloud has about 41M paying subscribers (figure cited in the signs101 post, unverified). | The thing it copies. It's free, open source, and runs in the browser, but it's still alpha, and .ai file compatibility and 3D aren't finished. |
| Inkscape | Open source | 2003 | The most mature open-source vector tool (main repo on GitLab, 4,093 stars on the GitHub mirror). | Free and mature, but its interface and interaction are its own system, unlike Illustrator's. One user says VectorCraft is "even in its incomplete form better than Inkscape" (HN jhbadger). |
| Graphite(GraphiteEditor) | Open source | 2021 and up (repo created 2020-04) | 27,843 stars, used for 6 years; only +69 in the last 7 days | Also a Rust-built, browser-first vector editor, but it takes a node-based, programmatic route instead of copying Illustrator. VectorCraft got in one month the stars equal to 41% of Graphite's 6 years. |
| Affinity(Designer) | Other (desktop) | 2014; free for individuals from 2025-10 (requires a Canva account) | A mature commercial product | Free and mature, but requires an account, is closed source, and has no Linux build. Kru Mark's comparison video of the two has 40k views. |
| Penpot | Open source / web | Around 2020 | 62,109 stars | Built for UI design and aimed at Figma, not an illustration tool |
| Boxy SVG, SVG-Edit (7,892 stars), Linearity Curve (formerly Vectornator), Photopea | Web / other | Already around | Small to medium | Lightweight SVG editors or web tools, without Illustrator's full set (Pathfinder, live blend, perspective grid, gradient mesh) |
| Mindscaper(Leo Wattenberg) | Open source / web | 2026 | Small, "without the hype" | Also AI-written creative software, but with interaction designed by a real designer rather than copied from an existing product (the author's words) |

Bottom line: the vector editing category is already crowded, and free mature options exist (Inkscape, Affinity's free version). VectorCraft's only new angle is "free, open source, and looks exactly like Illustrator," plus the browser version and MCP.

### 3. Growth tactics (where users come from)

1. **The parent brand's overall breakout (confirmed, and the main driver)** : HN 10-04 "ArtCraft Apps – open-source Adobe compatible suite" 180 pts / 246 comments; 10-08 "Open-Source Rust Alternatives to Adobe Apps" 36 pts, "What ArtCraft's Vibe-Coded Apps Say About Adobe" 36 pts / 71 comments; 10-25 "What Adobe v ArtCraft teaches us" 94 pts. Gizmodo ran "Someone Vibe Coded a Free Knockoff of Adobe Creative Suite" 10-07, and Phoronix and X account kimmonismus also covered it (see launcher report). On Reddit r/GeminiAI: "I've created Open Source 100% Rust replacements for 7 of Adobe's apps". VectorCraft's single-day peak (10-11) fell on the same day as its sibling libraries, which shows the traffic came in as a whole suite.

2. **Design and maker YouTube reviews (confirmed)** (YouTube Data API, 2026-11-06 views): Kru Mark Tutorials "VectorCraft? Someone Vibe Coded a Free Adobe Illustrator Clone" 58,245 (10-10); Branchus Creations "I've used Adobe Illustrator for 37 years. Is this the end?" 55,015 (10-12); Logos By Nick "There's A New Open Source Vector Design Tool | VectorCraft Review" 53,486 (10-28); Kru Mark "Affinity vs VectorCraft" 40,175 (10-25). There are also install tutorials and short videos like "How To Connect Vectorcraft With Claude Code". This channel is VectorCraft's own, dedicated to covering it.

3. **Instagram / Facebook short videos and industry forums (presence confirmed, reach not verified)** : on signs101 (a sign-making industry forum) 10-12, someone opened a thread "Vectorcraft. Is anyone using it?", and a reply said "I've seen it pop up in my Facebook feeds a few times". On the PedalPCB forum, a user said Instagram reels pushed it to him. There is discussion in Facebook laser-engraving beginner groups and the drawingeveryday group, an Instagram reel titled "Claude draws vectors like a designer", and reshares on LinkedIn.

4. **SEO and parasite sites (presence confirmed)** : vectorcraft.app ("Official VectorCraft web build, unmodified", hosting the full app in the browser), vectorcraft.run, aivector.app, artcraftsuite.org, enlisted.directory, frontiernow.dev, and pasqualepillitteri.it all publish "free Illustrator alternative" reviews and guides that link back to the official site. opensourcealternatives.to, Slashdot and SourceForge have "Inkscape vs VectorCraft" comparison pages.

5. **Official site and launcher funneling (confirmed)** : the getartcraft.com/apps and VectorCraft pages both promote "ArtCraft Launcher installs VectorCraft and every other Crafting App", and the README header links to Discord and the full app suite.

6. **AI / MCP circles (partly confirmed)** : the README has a section titled "Use it from Claude Code", and the example works were "all drawn with the same MCP command API". On HN 10-02 someone asked "Are agents able to control these well? I saw vector craft mention MCP". Companion libraries such as artcraft-skills have appeared on the periphery. This channel mostly brings developer stars, not designers.

7. No paid-acquisition evidence found (ArtCraft is not on our ad library tracking list). Our local x-radar corpus has no hits for vectorcraft / drawcraft, which means we don't index it, not that nobody discusses it on X.

### 4. Why it took off

- It rides the "AI solo-cloning the whole Adobe suite" story rather than spreading on its own product. The peak day matched its sibling libraries, and weekly growth fell back in step.

- It taps subscription fatigue: Illustrator starts at $22.99/month (per the vectorcraft.app comparison table). Small-business owners doing signage, laser engraving and logo design are sensitive to that cost, and forum posts open with "Will I jump off the Adobe subscription?"

- It copies Illustrator's layout, tools and shortcuts (README: "You already know how to use it"), so longtime users don't have to relearn anything. Inkscape and Graphite don't offer that. Leo Wattenberg also notes that copying an existing design sidesteps the interaction design work AI is worst at.

- The browser version (WebAssembly + WebGPU, about 21 MB on first load) lets people try it without installing, and reviews and parasite sites both use it as the entry point.

- Iteration is fast: 37 days, 21 major versions, 3,400 merged PRs. A review line like "11-day alpha this good" (aivector.app) is itself a talking point.

### 5. Differentiation

Versus Inkscape, Graphite and Affinity: **"an Illustrator clone" + free and open source + runs in the browser + native on five platforms + built-in MCP so Claude can draw vectors + imports and exports .ai (PDF-compatible)** . On performance it claims 20k shapes at 27 ms and UI at 120 fps. This differentiation is why it can be **singled out** for reviews (the "Illustrator veteran for 37 years" and "Affinity vs VectorCraft" videos exist because it looks like Illustrator). But **it is not the main reason for 11k stars** . The main reason is the parent brand's buzz: among clones, the Photoshop clone got 77k stars while the Illustrator clone ranks around 7th, which suggests stars track the mass awareness of the cloned product and the suite's overall heat, not VectorCraft's own product strength. MCP is the one selling point it holds alone in developer circles, but its traffic is still small (related videos get a few hundred to a thousand views).

### 6. Visibility / copycats

- Visibility: already widely discussed. The parent brand reached the HN front page and Gizmodo and Phoronix; VectorCraft itself has several YouTube reviews with 40k to 60k views, and signs101 and other industry forums are discussing it. Everything is free and open source, so there is no revenue (ArtCraft's business model is a separate AI image and video app, revenue undisclosed).

- Plenty of copycats already:
    - Hosted web builds or SEO guide parasite sites: vectorcraft.app, vectorcraft.run, aivector.app, artcraftsuite.org.
    - Ports and packaging: AkSinghSidhu/vectorcraft-android, areilly111/CraftApps-Android, linuxserver/docker-craft-apps, artcraft-nixos, artcraft-web-launcher.
    - Other "AI-written Illustrator alternatives": arafatic/Forma (Tauri), JenkinsRobotics/Aether-Vector, Tanvir-Chowdhury/LucentEdit (also has MCP), Rustys90/vectorforge (Android), psycbeat/canvas-menu-pipeline. All of these have only single-digit stars and never took off.

### 7. Takeaways

- "Copy the familiar pro software's interaction" plus "AI-speed implementation": it removes the learning curve and sidesteps AI's weakness at interaction design. Its users are people squeezed by subscriptions who don't want to relearn Inkscape.

- The browser build is the best trial entry point, and reviews and parasite sites both rely on it.

- The reviewers are YouTube channels for professional creators (logo design, Illustrator tutorials), not tech channels. Vertical industries (signage, laser engraving, Cricut-style crafts) are the next layer of traffic.

- Parasite opportunities: Chinese-language reviews and tutorials, templates and asset packs for vertical industries, and packaging MCP vector drawing as an "AI makes an editable logo" service.

### 8. Uncertain

- Real usage: how many of the 2.4M release downloads are launcher auto-updates and repeat counts is unverified.

- How many of the stars and forks come from developers and contributors rather than designers is unverified. The fork/star ratio of 0.48 suggests contributors make up a meaningful share.

- Legal risk: the Illustrator interface and the .ai format; the "clean-room" claim has been questioned (the team replied on HN: "we explicitly do not use reverse engineering").

- Heat is fading: in week 6 of tracking, weekly growth dropped from 583 to 409. Whether it keeps designers depends on .ai interoperability and stability.

- Reddit post bodies couldn't be retrieved (403), so I only saw search summaries. The r/vectorart summary includes negative voices like "There are better alternatives like Graphite or Inkscape… mostly Claude-vibe-coded".
