# AI rewrote Microsoft Word in one month, 30 days, 17k stars: WordCraft took off because of the story and the company's chain of launches, not the software itself

**What it is** An open-source word processor modeled on Word, written in Rust. The author says most of the code was written by AI over one month, and AI agents can operate it directly.

**Why it blew up** The same company had a week earlier gotten the HN front page and tech press with "AI clones Adobe." WordCraft followed with "next up: Microsoft," and The Register, ZDNet, and HN kept writing about it. What carried it was the "AI rewrites Word" story, which everyone can argue about, not the features.

**C** **How you could follow it** Stop cloning yet another Word. Go after what it does badly: for example, an open-source benchmark suite that tests AI rewrites of Office against thousands of real .docx files, or tools and templates for people who want to rewrite software with agents.

C grade: the playbook is worth learning, but the "AI rewrites a giant's software" news angle has already been used by ArtCraft. It rode the 260k-star parent brand and the founder's reputation, which followers don't get. Existing copycat projects mostly sit at a few dozen to a hundred-odd stars. Publicly discussed / widely covered

WordCraft is an open-source word processor written in pure Rust, with a UI modeled on Word. The author says Claude wrote most of the code. Within 30 days of launch it had 17,388 stars and 4,796 forks on GitHub. But lay out the timeline and it's clear it's a sequel to the news a week earlier that the same company had "AI cloned all of Adobe in a week." Most of the stars came from that wave of attention, not from the project itself. Below: what it is, where the stars came from, which followers got stars and which didn't, and what room is left if you want stars by "AI rewriting some big software" yourself.

### "I'm not ready to post this to HN"

In 2026 Oct 5, a Hacker News post titled "ArtCraft Apps – open-source Adobe compatible suite written in Rust" reached 180 points and 246 comments. The author did not post it. ArtCraft's founder Brandon Thomas (HN account echelon, previously built FakeYou and Storyteller.ai) opened the comment section with: "Haha, I wasn't ready to post this to HN yet. It's still far from usable." He said the apps "are all still very early alpha," are dual-licensed MIT/Apache with no telemetry, and that he plans to push them to full parity with the originals: "We need a lot of help, I'll offer bounties and bug bounties."

The comments that followed were polarized. Some said "I tried their Photoshop alternative and basically nothing works," others said "AI-generated, badly broken software, and a title like this is close to fraud." Some said "three years ago seeing this would have floored you," and one said they shorted Adobe on the spot.

Two days later, on Oct 7, the same GitHub org storytold built several repos in one day: WordCraft (Word), GridCraft (Excel), DeckCraft (PowerPoint), CADCraft, and more. The story went from "AI clones Adobe" to "next up: Microsoft."

### What it is

An open-source "Word alternative" that runs on macOS, Windows, Linux and BSD, and can also be compiled to WebAssembly to run in the browser. The README's headline selling points: the Ribbon menu and shortcuts work just like Word (F4 repeat, F7 spell check); it reads and writes .docx and can also open legacy .doc files; no Electron, with the UI drawn on the GPU via egui; and every action is a numbered command, 422 in total. The same command set drives the UI and can be called from the command line, a JSON channel, and an MCP server, which means AI agents can operate it directly.

The author himself says it's unfinished. The Register's 10-08 report quoted the project directly: it's pre-alpha, roughly 62% aligned with Word's real functionality; compatibility testing against a batch of real .docx files hasn't started; charts, SmartArt, and embedded OLE objects get lost on open. A Register reporter tried it on an Arm Surface and found it "runs pretty well," but "don't use it for real work yet."

As of 11-06 the repo had about 2,857 commits, released up to v0.14.0. The account ranked #5 among contributors is called `claude`, with 134 commits (GitHub, 11-06).

### Where the stars came from

| Date | What happened | Sources |
|---|---|---|
| 9-30 to 10-01 | storytold released 7 Adobe clones in one go. PhotoCraft (Photoshop) got 6,691 stars in its first week. The founder said on X and Reddit it was built with Claude Opus 5.5, shouting "software is over." | orcarouter blog 10-07, biggo 10-08 |
| 10-04 to 10-05 | HN "ArtCraft Apps" post 180 points, 246 comments | HN |
| 10-07 | WordCraft, GridCraft, DeckCraft, and CADCraft created the same day | GitHub |
| 10-08 | The Register published "Rust newcomer releases a 'rewrite' of Microsoft Office, with Claude writing the code," singling out WordCraft for hands-on testing and asking Microsoft, LibreOffice, and Adobe for comment (none responded). | The Register |
| 10-09 | Thurrott: "Open-source AI developers have set their sights on Microsoft Office too" | Thurrott |
| 10-12 | HN user espeed posted "An open-source, clean-room, pure-Rust rewrite of Microsoft Word," with 101 points and 119 comments. Around the same time there was an "Ask HN: Will Microsoft sue WordCraft, a vibe-coded app?" | HN |
| 10-13 | +3,554 stars in a single day, the highest day in 30 days. OSChina reported the same day: "5 days, 6185 stars." | GitHub, OSChina |
| 10-14 | ZDNet: "I tried this free Word clone on Linux, and it became my default" | ZDNet |
| mid-to-late October | A batch of YouTube videos: "Someone vibe-coded a free Word," "Stop paying for Word." Chinese-language retellings on CSDN (10-17) and Zhihu (10-21); discussion on Reddit's r/software and r/degoogle. | Multiple platforms |
| 10-31 | The same org then released Craft Anything (now about 17k stars), keeping the buzz going. | GitHub |

No evidence of paid promotion was found. It was all organic: the founder's own accounts, HN, tech media, YouTube tech channels, plus Chinese community retellings.

It's already past the peak: 10-17 was 13,553 stars and 11-06 is 17,388; in the last 7 days it gained 803, while on the 7 day before that, 1,095,11-06 gained only 87 (GitHub, 11-06). New stars follow the news cycle: once the news cools, so does the growth.

### Why this one

**First, it didn't start from zero.** By the time WordCraft launched, ArtCraft had already hit the HN front page, and PhotoCraft now has 77k stars. The Register's Office article wrote up Word, Excel, and PowerPoint together. The storytold org's 33 repos total over 260k stars (GitHub, 11-06), and WordCraft ranks only fifth: PhotoCraft 77k, ArtCraft 39k, PdfCraft 19.8k, FilmCraft 17.7k, then WordCraft at 17.4k. The Excel version GridCraft has only 7.2k, and the PowerPoint version DeckCraft only 4.6k. Same company, same day, same approach. The only difference is how famous the software being cloned is.

**Second, anyone can jump into this story.** People who hate subscriptions, hate Microsoft, or use Linux share it because "free Word is here"; the AI crowd shares it because "Opus wrote Word in a month"; critics share it over copyright and quality. In 10-12 HN thread, the first screen of comments includes "this is insane" and "Excel is under 50MB and Word under 90MB, I can open all my files," but also "the AI may have seen the source during training, so what's this clean-room nonsense?" "Has anyone actually tried it? This quality is embarrassing to release" and "If Oracle got hit with this, the lawyers would fall from the sky." The controversy itself is the fuel.

**Third, the target is something everyone knows.** "Free, open source, works like Word" is far easier to grasp than "a new word processor," so outlets aimed at general users like ZDNet and Thurrott were willing to write about it.

**Fourth, it looks complete.** The README is full of screenshots (Ribbon, track changes, references, mail merge, dark mode), and it notes the screenshots were rendered by its own UI test harness. It has 27 interface languages and installers for five platforms. An outsider glancing at it would believe it. "A commit every two minutes" later became title material for YouTube videos.

**Fifth, it has a standalone pitch for developers: agents can operate it.** 422 commands can be called from MCP, and the title of the CSDN retelling lands on "let AI easily read and write Word documents." The fork-to-star ratio is 28% (typical projects sit around 5%–15%). Inference: many people forked it to have their own agents submit PRs, and the repo now has 1,242 open issues.

It didn't win on features. LibreOffice, ONLYOFFICE, and WPS are all far more mature. What makes it different is its identity as software written by AI in one month. Without the wave PhotoCraft set off first, an alpha Word clone with features only 62% aligned would be hard to get this many stars on its own (inference).

### How much the followers got

Many have crowded into this theme, but almost none got traction:

| Followers | What they did | star |
|---|---|---|
| AlienTechSoftware/notecraft | Rewrites of OneNote | 123 |
| MonkeySaint/mailcraft | Rewrites of Outlook | 47 |
| daijro/honeydew | Rewrites of FL Studio Mobile | 101 |
| artcraft-android/wordcraft-android | Android version of WordCraft | 37 |
| OliverSolomon/wordcraft-react | React version | 10 |
| socrtwo/annes-pen, Rustys90's QuillForge / WriteForge | Office suites each person built | Under a few dozen stars |
| lemonadesaltbagel/crab | MCP tools for "rebuilding any software" | 211 |
| replicraft/remade | Directories collecting AI-rebuilt software | 239 |
| AIshihzong/awesome-reverse-engineer-anything | List | 507 |

The apps that copied the approach mostly stalled at a few dozen to a hundred-odd stars. The ones that did best were the ones that don't ship an app: one tool (211), one directory (239), one list (507). The reason is easy to see: "AI rewrites XX" works as news because it's the first time people feel it's doable. By the second or third time, the media stops covering it, and people on HN start getting tired of it. 10-12 thread already has someone asking, "Has anyone who upvotes storytold apps on HN actually used any of them?"

### If it were you

**Verdict** : C. You can learn a full star-gathering playbook here, but copying it isn't worth it. ArtCraft has already used up most of the "AI rewrites a giant's software" angle, and the traffic it got came from something followers don't have: an org already at 260k stars, plus the founder's own reputation.

**Who it's for** : indie devs who already have followers in a vertical community and can find a professional tool that the niche constantly complains about but ArtCraft hasn't touched (an industry CAD, a pro audio or typesetting tool, a note app people are forced to keep renewing), and who would actually use it themselves.

**Who it's not for** : anyone chasing stars with "I cloned Word / Excel / Photoshop with AI." The big names are already taken; the second clone gets scraps. Also skip it if you have no distribution and are hoping HN alone will carry you.

**How to build it** : don't compete on how close the clone looks, compete on whether it actually works. The best gap is what WordCraft left undone: by its own admission, real .docx compatibility testing hasn't started. Build an open-source test suite and scorer that opens 1,000 real-world Word files one by one and compares the rendered output, so any AI-rewritten Office app can run against it. That's easier to get cited than another editor. The other route is the crab / checklist line: tools for people rewriting software with agents, like prompt packs, AGENTS.md templates, a clean-room compliance checklist, or extracting WordCraft's 422-command plus MCP structure as a standalone library.

**How to get users** : write the README the way ArtCraft does: screenshots everywhere, installers for every platform, and an honest note on how far along it is and what's missing (that honesty actually builds trust). For the first HN post, ship something people can open immediately: in 10-12's thread, people complained that it "says it runs in the browser but gives no demo link." Also post in the communities of the software being cloned (the matching Reddit subs, and on the Chinese side CSDN and Zhihu), not just the AI circles.

**When to move, and how early** : as early as possible. Momentum is already fading: WordCraft's weekly growth dropped from 1,095 to 803. 11-12 Brandon Thomas is speaking at the AI Engineer Code Summit, which may bring another wave of attention. Launch before that or right after it. By the end of 2026, "AI rewrites XX" will most likely no longer be news (inference).

**What would show you misread it** : (1) a follow-on project (not from storytold) passes 3,000 stars within 30 days, meaning the topic still has room, so raise your estimate; (2) Microsoft or Adobe take legal action against storytold, which makes this kind of project much riskier but also sparks another round of discussion; (3) WordCraft's weekly growth falls below 200 and commits stop, meaning even the original can't hold people, so following it is worth less.

## Why storytold/wordcraft took off

**In one line** : WordCraft is a "pure Rust clean-room rewrite of Microsoft Word" built by ArtCraft (Brandon Thomas, founder of FakeYou / Storyteller.ai) using Claude Opus 5.5 multi-agent parallel work, with 2800+ commits in 30 days. It isn't a standalone breakout project; it's the second wave of the big "AI rewrote all of Adobe in a week" story. In Sep 30, PhotoCraft and 7 other Adobe clones went viral first (PhotoCraft now at 77k stars). In Oct 7, the same org rode the momentum by releasing Word/Excel/PowerPoint clones, and media and HN framed it directly as "the next target: Microsoft Office." On Oct 13 it added +3554 stars in a single day.

### 1. Basic data

- GitHub: repo created 2026-10-07; as of 2026-11-06 roughly 17.4k stars, 4.8k forks, 1242 open issues, and about 2857 commits (GitHub API, 2026-11-06); star-history shows 244 contributors. In the contributor ranking, #5 is `claude` (134 commits).

- Growth curve (our GitHub repo data card): peak single-day gain 10-13 of +3554; 10-17 13,553 → 11-06 17,388; last 7 days +803, first 7 days +1095, now in a decaying steady state. OSChina reported "6185 stars in 5 days" (10-13), meaning it already had 10-12k before the HN thread 6.

- Fork-to-star ratio as high as 28% (typical projects 5–15%): lots of people forked it so their own AI agents could submit PRs, and the README displays CodeRabbit and SonarCloud badges. This is a repo flooded with "agent contributors."

- Total stars across the storytold (ArtCraft) org: 260k+. PhotoCraft 77k, ArtCraft 39k, PdfCraft 19.8k, FilmCraft 17.7k, WordCraft 17.4k, Craft Anything 17k, LightCraft 15.6k, VectorCraft 11.4k, GridCraft (Excel) 7.2k, DeckCraft (PowerPoint) 4.6k, and others (GitHub API 2026-11-06).

### 2. Competitors

| Competitors | Form | Launched | Scale | How WordCraft is different |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| LibreOffice Writer | Open-source desktop | 2010 (descended from OpenOffice/StarOffice) | Tens of millions of users; the de facto open-source office suite. | LO is old C++ code with a non-Ribbon UI; WordCraft's pitch is "identical Ribbon and shortcuts to Word" plus native Rust/GPU, WASM, and MCP so agents can drive it. Maturity is far behind LO. |
| ONLYOFFICE Docs | Open source (AGPL), desktop and web. | Around 2016 | Tens of thousands of GitHub stars, many enterprise deployments. | Also docx-native with a Word-like Ribbon. WordCraft differs with a permissive MIT/Apache license, a pure Rust single codebase, and an agent command layer. |
| WPS Office | Free commercial, with ads and memberships. | 1988 / the modern 2010s | Hundreds of millions of monthly active users. | Closed source, with ads. WordCraft is open source with no ads. |
| Collabora Online | Open source (LO core), web. | 2015 | Enterprise / Nextcloud integration. | Focused on collaboration. WordCraft has no collaboration and no cloud. |
| Google Docs / Word for the web free tiers. | Big-company features | 2006 / 2010 | Hundreds of millions of users | Cloud-based, account required. WordCraft is offline and local. |
| Apple Pages, SoftMaker FreeOffice, AbiWord, Calligra Words. | Free desktop. | Early on | Small to medium | None of them aim for pixel-level Word resemblance. |
| Copycat AI clean-room clones (Anne's Pen, Rustys90's QuillForge/WriteForge, etc.). | Open source | 2026-10 | 0 to a few dozen stars. | Late to the party, no brand, no ArtCraft traffic. |

Bottom line: there are many mature free Word alternatives, and WordCraft has no feature advantage (The Register cites the project's own claim of only 62% feature parity, with real DOCX file compatibility testing not yet started). Its novelty isn't "replacing Word," it's the narrative itself: "AI rewrote Word in 30 days."

### 3. Growth tactics and timeline (by date)

1. **9-30 to 10-01** : storytold released 7 Adobe clones in one go (PhotoCraft and others), and Brandon Thomas on X/Reddit declared "software is over," saying he built them with Claude Opus 5.5 (biggo 2026-10-08 reported; orcarouter blog 10-07 recorded PhotoCraft gaining 6691 stars in a week).

2. **10-04** : HN "ArtCraft Apps – open-source Adobe compatible suite written in Rust," 180 points, 246 comments (HN Algolia).

3. **10-07** : same day, WordCraft, GridCraft, DeckCraft, SoundCraft, and CADCraft were created, turning "after Adobe, it's Microsoft's turn" into the news hook.

4. **10-08** : The Register, "Rust upstart reveals 'reimplementation' of Microsoft Office – with Claude on coding duty." It names WordCraft and tests it, and also asked Microsoft, LibreOffice and Adobe for comment (none responded). Tedium and biggo covered ArtCraft the same day. Several legal pieces (technollama, licenseware) debated whether clean-room is legitimate.

5. **10-09** : Thurrott, "Open Source AI Dev is Going After Microsoft Office, Too."

6. **10-12** : HN post "An open-source, clean-room reimplementation of Microsoft Word in pure Rust" 101 points, 119 comments (by espeed). Another: "Ask HN: Will Microsoft sue vibe coded wordcraft…"

7. **10-13** : Single-day peak of +3554 stars. oschina (503003), windowsforum and an Italian blog followed the same day. The English Baidu Baike entry dates its release to 10-13.

8. **10-14** : ZDNet, "I tried the free Microsoft Word clone on Linux - and it's my new default."

9. **Mid-to-late October** : A batch of YouTube videos ("Someone Vibe Coded a Free Microsoft Word Clone," "Stop Paying for Microsoft Word," "Someone Rebuilt Word in Rust. It is AWESOME (10 days, 14k stars)"), an Instagram reel, and reshares in Facebook groups. Chinese re-spread on Zhihu (10-21) and CSDN (10-17). Discussion on Reddit r/software, r/degoogle, r/DIY_Geeks, r/NoStupidQuestions. SourceForge mirror.

10. **10-24 to 11-05** : techbronerd, "AI labs are burning their own customers" (94 HN points), Leo Wattenberg's "Can you vibecode creative software?" and other reflection pieces kept citing ArtCraft as the case study. 10-31 then released Craft Anything (17k stars) to keep the momentum going. Brandon was invited to speak at the 11-12 AI Engineer Code Summit.

No evidence of paid acquisition or boosted promotion. It was all earned media: the founder's X account, HN, tech press, YouTube tech channels, and Chinese community reposts. The local x-radar corpus has no hits for wordcraft/artcraft (coverage is incomplete, so this doesn't mean there was no discussion on X).

### 4. Why it took off

- **Riding the buzz of their own PhotoCraft** : When WordCraft launched 7 days later, ArtCraft was already an HN front-pager and a hot Reddit thread, and The Register's Office story covered all three apps together. WordCraft rode the parent brand's traffic rather than cold-starting.

- **"AI rewrites Word" is a story everyone has an opinion on** : supporters (anti-subscription, anti-Microsoft, Linux users), the AI crowd (a showcase of Opus 5.5 capability; model-router vendors like orcarouter also wrote sponsored-style pieces), and critics (copyright, the definition of clean-room, vibe-coded quality). All three camps were sharing it. HN comments mixed praise with "buggy" and "will get sued," and the controversy itself fueled spread.

- **Good choice of target** : Word is software everyone has used. The headline "free, open source, and just like Word" is far easier to grasp than "a new word processor," and mass-audience outlets like ZDNet and Thurrott were willing to cover it.

- **It really looks like Word** : The README is a full set of screenshots (Ribbon, track changes, citations, mail merge, dark mode), 27 interface languages, and installers for macOS, Windows, Linux, BSD and Web. Outsiders look at it and believe it. The release pace was also very fast (30 days to v0.14.0), and "a commit every 2 minutes" became a YouTube topic in itself.

- **Built for agents** : 422 commands can be driven via CLI, JSON and MCP. The Chinese community (CSDN's "Let AI easily read and write Word documents," Zhihu) singled this out as a selling point, and it drew many developers to fork it.

- **Weak star retention, retention depends on ongoing updates** : Over the last 7 days growth was +803 and declining, which suggests new stars came mainly from the news cycle. Real usage is unknown (several HN commenters who tested it reported it was "very buggy, crashes easily").

### 5. Differentiation

- Compared with LibreOffice, ONLYOFFICE and WPS: the difference is "pixel-level imitation of Word's interaction + pure Rust/GPU native + WASM + permissive license + MCP agent interface," and most importantly, "written by AI in a month."

- Why it took off: the feature set is largely not the differentiator. The differentiators that actually mattered were the narrative (an AI-built clone of a giant's software by one person) and the chained launches from the parent brand. Without PhotoCraft's earlier breakout, an alpha Word clone that is 62% compatible would have struggled to earn this many stars on its own.

### 6. Copycats

- Direct derivatives: artcraft-android/wordcraft-android (37 stars), OliverSolomon/wordcraft-react (10), mmizutani/wordcraft and other forks.

- Same pattern, "XX-craft / clean-room Rust rewrite": AlienTechSoftware/notecraft (OneNote, 123), MonkeySaint/mailcraft (Outlook, 47), daijro/honeydew (FL Studio Mobile, 101), daijro/paint.rs (Paint.NET), aliasfoxkde/FireCraft (Fireworks), kabaragoya-loves-you/printcraft, michaelshimeles/sketch (Paper), socrtwo/annes-pen (Anne's Office suite), and Rustys90's QuillForge/TextForge/WriteForge.

- Tools and directories: lemonadesaltbagel/crab (211, "Clean Rebuild of Anything's Behavior" MCP tool), replicraft/remade (239, software-rebuild directory), AIshihzong/awesome-reverse-engineer-anything (507), qqxhb/awesome-ai-rewrite (Chinese), a-barzanti/ai-rebuilds.

- The followers are all in the tens to hundreds of stars, which suggests ArtCraft absorbed most of the attention for the "AI clean-room rewrite" theme.

### 7. Visibility

Widely discussed: The Register, Thurrott, ZDNet, Tedium, Phoronix, CineD, oschina, Zhihu, Baidu Baike, several YouTube videos, and multiple HN threads. Revenue: the Craft apps are free. ArtCraft monetizes through its own AI image/video tokens (ArtCraft Studio, getartcraft.com/pricing), and the open-source apps act as a funnel (biggo report).

### 8. What others can learn

- **"Pick a giant everyone knows and rewrite its software with AI" is a ready-made media hook** , with the headline carrying its own conflict (a giant, copyright, AI capability).

- **Chained launches** : hit the biggest target first (Photoshop), then ship a second batch within a week (Office), giving the press a "sequel" to write about. Every repo links back to the same brand, Discord and Launcher.

- **README as a product landing page** : lots of real screenshots, installers for every platform, and honest parity docs (which actually increase credibility).

- **Using an open-source tool as the acquisition funnel for a paid AI product** .

- But this playbook is now crowded with imitators, and the novelty of "AI clones XX" alone is wearing off fast.

### 9. Uncertain

- Real download/usage numbers (Launcher download counts weren't retrieved because of GitHub API rate limits).

- The engagement on Brandon's original X post and whether any large accounts reposted it are unverified (no hits in the x-radar corpus).

- Whether Microsoft or Adobe will take legal action, and whether the project will be maintained long-term (it depends on Opus subscription costs).

- How many of the 4.8k forks were automated agent forks is unverified.
