"Clay killer, 85% cheaper": treg's 7,200 stars, half from AI Jason's audience

What it is An "OpenRouter for tools" for agents: one URL and one token, pay per call for thousands of APIs covering SEO, lead finding, social, scraping, and more, with no need to sign up and subscribe to each vendor separately.

Why it blew up The founder, AI Jason, brought his own audience: a YouTube channel with 235k subscribers and an X account with 37k followers. Every feature got a polished short video (his "Clay killer" post pulled 465k views). Add a one-line install command pushed into every agent plugin marketplace, a star base carried over from his last project, and a spot on GitHub's Python trending chart in late October.

CHow to play it Stop building a generic tool gateway. Copy the smallest piece: a single-scenario agent skill, with a reproducible real run and a receipt, and a comparison video that goes after a SaaS everyone knows is expensive. On Chinese platforms, client sourcing and product-selection scenarios may still be empty.

C grade: most of the stars came from the founder's audience, his previous project's base, and an early spot in the plugin marketplaces. Followers can't get those. Funded competitors Monid and OpenRouter itself, plus Composio with 30k stars, have all been widely covered. The launch playbook is worth copying. Going head-on with a clone isn't worth it. treg is Superdesign's take on an "OpenRouter for agent tools": give Claude Code or Codex one URL and one token, and it can call 4,100 SEO, lead-finding, social, scraping and API-generation tools pay-per-use, with no signing up for each vendor separately. 2026 Started in July. Under four months in, it has 7,202 stars and 649 forks on GitHub (11-06), and it's still climbing 700 every week. The idea itself isn't novel: at least three similar products launched the same month. What got it traction is the founder's built-in audience and a launch cadence that's easy to copy. Below: what it is, where the stars came from, who it's competing with, and which parts you can learn from.

A 40-second video

On 2026 October 6, Jason Zhou (AI Jason on YouTube, 235k subscribers; 37k followers on X) posted a video on X:

Introducing OpenSource Clay killer - 85% cheaper than clay - Most accurate on people-search bench - 25x faster - Run GTM directly in claude code or codex

The video runs about 40 seconds, with a few bar charts. Finding 100 people's work emails cost treg $0.58 for 92 matches; Clay quoted $3.77 for 84 matches. Clay took 11.2 seconds per lookup, treg took 0.44. The repo link was in the next reply. The post got about 465k views and 2,600 likes. The same day, "Treg (OpenRouter for Tools)" hit 48 points on Hacker News.

The same day, indie blogger thesatyajit pulled the repo, read the source, and re-checked the numbers frame by frame from the video. His verdict is interesting: the 85% savings math holds up, and the 27-person, 20 verified-email, $0.58 list on the landing page has a CSV in the repo you can reproduce. But the "most accurate" chart cites the wrong source: the video uses their own 100-person test, not the public benchmark the landing page references. The routing code is solid, but most of the marketing numbers can't be verified.

That's treg's playbook. It doesn't pitch "tool gateway" as an abstract idea. It picks a SaaS everyone knows is expensive as the target and works out the bill to the cent.

What it actually is

The first paragraph of the README is blunt: the data agents need to do real work is locked behind subscriptions nobody would buy for a single task. Semrush at $139/month, Moz at $99/month, Crunchbase at $99/month, Apollo at $59/seat. Some have no public API at all (TikTok and Instagram require approval). treg has set up all of these on its own accounts and charges you a few cents per call.

Using it takes three steps: install the CLI, log in, and search by what you want to do (treg catalog search "backlinks for a domain"), check the price, then call it. New teams get $1 free. A few reassuring rules: your own API key always takes priority and isn't billed; if the provider returns 401/402/429, you pay nothing; and any endpoint without public pricing doesn't get listed.

The repo also ships several ready-made workflows: recruit (turns a LinkedIn job post into a shortlist of candidates), lead-signals (finds buyers actively looking for vendors from public signals like complaints, job changes, and funding news), and make-ugc for UGC videos. Each one has its own landing page.

Breaking it down, there are four sources of traffic. The first is by far the biggest:

  • The founder is his own media channel. Every feature gets a polished short video on X, a long-form YouTube tutorial, and a community post. He also runs courses in the community on how to make launch videos. There's no sign of paid acquisition.
  • One repo spread across every agent plugin marketplace. The README includes a one-line install for Claude Code (/plugin marketplace add superdesigndev/treg), plus npx skills add, a Codex plugin, the MiniMax plugin marketplace, and a Claude Connector. The team described one detail on the Chinese podcast 《十字路口》 (10-18): when the Codex plugin marketplace first opened and sorted alphabetically, they renamed their previous product "01 SuperDesign" so it would land at the top, and that brought in a large group of users who didn't churn much.
  • The base left over from the last project. Superdesign started as a Cursor plugin, picked up over six thousand stars in a few months of being open source, and the main repo now has 7,586 stars. The #4 top committer is unclecode, creator of Crawl4AI (87k stars), with 550 commits. I couldn't confirm whether he's a partner or a collaborator, or whether he's promoting treg through his own channels.
  • Organic traffic from GitHub trending. It only started appearing on the chart in late October. After that, it grew steadily at +60 to +200 a day.

A nobody author posting the same code would struggle to reach this volume. There's a benchmark right next door: Monid, with the same positioning and funding, has only reached a little over 6k stars on GitHub.

Who it's competing with

In late August 2026, within a single week at least three "OpenRouter for agent tools" products appeared at once. On X, wong2 8-26 posted a thread naming treg, Monid, and Agentmuxer together.

CompetitorsWhat it isScaleHow treg differs
MonidWebsite + open-source repoRaised $2.1M in angel funding; PH #1 for the day (490 votes) 9-02; GitHub 6,130 starsNearly identical positioning. The repo description even copies treg's formatting. Stars dropped about 600 around 10-28 and growth has stalled since (cause not verified).
AgentmuxerWebsite, not open sourceAmplified by a YC partner, scale unknownAutomatically picks providers by capability
OpenRouter's official Server Toolslaunched 9-24OriginalMostly general tools like search and shell. Doesn't touch long-tail uses like SEO or lead finding.
ComposioOpen source + SaaS31K starsLets agents operate Gmail and Slack, but you authorize your own accounts

MCP gateways (IBM, Docker, etc.)Open source1.6k–4.8k starsOnly aggregates your own credentials and doesn't sell data

The table makes a simple point: this category isn't short on players. There are funded startups, the platform incumbents, and old projects with 30k stars. treg holds its ground because its catalog is deep (hand-curated, priced, routable), it shipped more than 1,500 PRs in four months, and it adds a new scenario every two or three weeks. It got noticed first because of AI Jason.

If it were you

C: copy its launch method, don't build another "agent tool gateway." Most of treg's stars came from the founder's video audience, his previous project's base, and an early spot in the plugin marketplaces. You can't borrow any of those. Competitors already include funded Monid, OpenRouter itself, and Composio with 30k stars, and PH, HN, podcasts, and several reviews have all covered them repeatedly. Building another generic gateway won't get you a tenth of its stars.

Who it's for: developers already using agents every day in a specific vertical (recruiting, lead generation, SEO, cross-border product selection, short video) who have a workflow where a few APIs chained together produce results, and who want to trade it for open-source reputation.

Who it's not for: anyone trying to build a from-scratch platform that aggregates thousands of APIs and charges per call while waiting for stars, or anyone with no distribution channel of their own who won't make videos.

How to do it: copy the smallest piece of treg's repo, not the whole platform. Build a single-scenario agent skill or plugin, like its recruit or lead-signals: one input, one results table, one command to install into Claude Code or Codex. Put a real run and its cost in the repo (like its "27 people, 20 emails, $0.58" CSV) so people can reproduce it. Pick something everyone knows is expensive as the target and work out the bill to the cent. Switching language and ecosystem is one direction: treg's catalog is SaaS from the English-speaking world. I haven't seen a mature open-source project yet for skills built around Chinese platforms (RedNote, Douyin, WeChat Official Accounts, 1688) for lead finding or product selection (inferred, not checked one by one).

How to get users: post a comparison video under 40 seconds on X (you vs. the expensive SaaS, with three charts: time, price, and hits), link the repo in a reply, and post the same day on HN or V2EX or Jike. Claim your spot as soon as new agent plugin marketplaces and skill directories open. Their early ranking rules are worth studying. After that, add a scenario and a video every two or three weeks instead of posting once and stopping.

When to move: agent plugin marketplaces are still early, and their ranking and featured slots haven't settled. The longer you wait, the harder it gets to rank near the top. Aim to ship your first reproducible scenario before Q1 2027.

Signs you're wrong: ① A single-scenario agent skill repo without a big name behind it passes 3,000 stars within a month. That means this path is easier than C suggests, so raise the grade. ② treg's weekly star growth drops below 200 over several weeks without new videos. That means its long tail depended almost entirely on the founder's traffic, which is harder for others to replicate. ③ Claude Code or Codex launches an official marketplace with a built-in paid data catalog. The middle layer then gets absorbed by the platform. Skills built on top can still earn stars, but a gateway no longer has a place.

One line

treg is an "OpenRouter for agent tools" open-sourced by the Superdesign team (founder Jason Zhou, YouTube "AI Jason", 235k subscribers): one token, one base URL / MCP, letting agents like Claude Code and Codex pay per call to 4,100+ third-party data APIs (SEO, social, lead finding, ads, scraping, image and video generation), with a claimed 0% markup; the team's own keys take priority and aren't billed. GitHub stars are its storefront; the real business is prepaid, per-call billing on the hosted treg.to version.

Growth tactics (ranked by weight)

  1. Founder's own YouTube channel (confirmed): AI Jason 235k subscribers, 9.3M total views. From 08-25 to 09-23 he posted 4 videos in a row with treg links in the description, the "Jev + Treg" one at about 154k views. The videos don't pitch the product; they teach "how to have agents automatically run UGC and find customers," with treg as the tool used along the way. Then a dozen small YouTubers followed with explainers (TechWealth Hub, SkipCI, Julian Goldie, etc., each a few hundred to two thousand views).
  2. Open-source and community base from the previous product (confirmed): the superdesign main repo has 7,589 stars, superdesign-skill 951 stars. Same org, same followers, plus the AI Builder Club community and Discord. Last time, SuperDesign was a "weekend project that grew organically to over 6 thousand stars" (podcast quote).
  3. Built into agent platform plugin and skill entry points (confirmed): Claude Code plugin marketplace (/plugin marketplace add superdesigndev/treg), npx skills add, MiniMax plugin marketplace, Claude.ai Connectors Directory (with a dedicated /mcp/v2/ endpoint), llms.txt ("tell your agent: set up treg - treg.to/llms.txt"). Last product, they got a wave of traffic by renaming it "01 SuperDesign" in the Codex plugin marketplace and landing #1 through alphabetical sorting (podcast quote); the same playbook was carried over here.
  4. Riding the name to the fullest (confirmed): "OpenRouter for tools" explains the product in one line; the PH launch landed the day after the Stripe-OpenRouter acquisition news (08-16 → 08-17).
  5. Launch cadence and community distribution (confirmed): PH #7 → HN 48 points → the "open-source Clay killer" clip on X → Reddit r/BestGitHubRepos → Chinese-language circles (@Fox sharing on X, mushroom.cv blog, the "Crossroads" podcast).
  6. Open-source directory as a provider entry point (partly confirmed): Jason said on X "if you're a provider, send a PR to get listed"; the directory is one YAML per provider, with many forks (649, fork/star ratio about 9%, median for same-age repos about 11%), some of which are likely people opening PRs. Crawl4AI author unclecode (2,052 GitHub followers) is the fourth-largest contributor (550 commits), bringing a scraping provider and endorsement.
  7. SEO through workflow landing pages (confirmed): treg.to/gtm-engineering, /workflows/find-and-verify-a-lead-list, /rea-growth, /ugc, and /people-search are long-tail pages written around tasks, and they are already searchable.
  8. GitHub trending (confirmed): after 60 days it hit the Python daily and weekly charts several times, one of the main sources of steady daily star growth from late October to now.

No evidence of paid acquisition found (the ad libraries don't cover it, so not finding it doesn't mean it isn't running ads).

Why it's working

  • Real demand, and it's just starting to surface: in 2026, plenty of non-coding white-collar workers started using Claude Code / Codex too (podcast quote: about half of Firecrawl and Apify's infrastructure users aren't developers). The data agents need for SEO, lead finding, and social work sits behind monthly subscriptions (Semrush $139/mo, Apollo $59/seat, etc.), and nobody subscribes just to run one task. Pay-per-call tool search for tasks fixes exactly that.
  • The money model is clear: prepaid balance, deducted per call, no monthly fee; new teams get $1 free. Spending concentrates on B2B lead data (Apollo, Hunter, Tomba, and PDL, routed by hit rate and price), then SEO, AEO, and UGC video generation (per the podcast). From the source, the default margin is 0, but the margin on the hosted version is unknown. Likely profit sources: the spread between bulk purchase prices and retail, conservative FX conversion, and routing.
  • Distribution first, product second: the founder brings a 235k-subscriber channel and an open-source library with 7.6k stars from his previous project plus a community, and every video brings a wave of new users and stars. Monid, a similar product, raised funding and took #1 on PH, but treg passed it on stars anyway.
  • Born as an internal tool: treg is the forwarding layer from Coolant (a growth agent) spun out as a standalone product. Every endpoint in the catalog ships with measured prices and real sample responses. thesatyajit's read after going through the code: "routing is solid, the catalog is hand-curated." The engineering is substantial: 4,358 commits and roughly 90k lines of Python. It's not a thin wrapper.
  • Timing: Stripe's acquisition of OpenRouter made "OpenRouter for X" a pitch that investors and developers both get instantly. Codex and Claude Code's plugin, skill, and connector ecosystems only opened up in the second half of 2026, so early entrants get the platform tailwind.

Differentiation

  1. Manages two kinds of tools at once: the platform catalog (using treg's key, pay per call) plus your team's own tools (your API keys, OAuth, CLIs, and SKILL.md, injected server-side; always used first, never billed). Monid and Agentmuxer focus on the former; credential tools like 1Password only handle the latter.
  2. Open source and self-hostable, and suppliers can list via PR. The tradeoff: the license has additional terms that prohibit third parties from offering it as a hosted service.
  3. Find tools by task, pay on a hit: you don't need to know which vendor sells backlink data. Routing bills only on success, so no hit means no charge. Every endpoint lists its price, with a spend-cap header.
  4. Ships with workflow skills (lead-signals, recruit, make-ugc, web-access) that sell the outcome "turn Claude Code into an SDR or SEO specialist" rather than selling an API.

These differentiators are real, but they're not the main reason it took off. Monid had the same positioning earlier and also had funding and a #1 on PH. treg passed its rivals on stars and buzz mainly through the founder's content distribution and the platform plugin entry points. Product differences (own-key priority, open source, task-based workflows) are what keep people around and willing to top up.

How many people have seen it

  • Revenue is not public: the only data point is one line from the podcast saying it hit several times SuperDesign's numbers about three weeks after launch. Nothing found on TrustMRR or similar.
  • Media and big accounts: the Chinese podcast 《十字路口》 covered it specifically, eesel.ai and thesatyajit wrote long analyses, ranked #7 on PH and 48 points on HN. No million-follower X accounts were found writing about it (our X corpus has just one Chinese mention, from @wong2__).
  • The category is already crowded: Monid (raised $2.1M), Agentmuxer (YC-circle buzz), Amorphic Labs (YC), OpenRouter's official tool marketplace, plus a pile of "OpenRouter for X" copycats. Verdict: the product is "buzzing in a small circle," but the opportunity is no longer blank.

What to borrow

  • Launch with an "X for Y" pitch, timed for the day after a trending news story.
  • The founder makes content: videos on "how to get something done with an agent," where the product appears naturally. No hard sell.
  • Get the product into the distribution points of agent platforms first: Claude Code plugin marketplace, skills.sh, Connectors Directory, Codex plugin marketplace. Add an llms.txt so agents can install it themselves.
  • Use the open-source library as the listing channel for suppliers and as trust-building. The money comes from prepaid balances and per-call billing on the hosted version.
  • Productize the internal tool: first wire up dozens of suppliers and measure their prices inside your own agent product, then sell it externally.

Still unclear

  • Actual revenue and paying user count (only the "several times SuperDesign" line exists), plus the real markup rate on the hosted version.
  • The direct trigger for the +215 stars on 11-01 (it shipped version 0.29.0 that day and ranked #12,10-31 on the Python daily chart; no matching video or big-account tweet found).
  • Star curve around August PH: stargazer timestamps aren't available, and our data for this repo only starts on 10-09.
  • Monid's star count went negative over the last 7 days. Unverified whether this was cleanup of fake stars or normal unstars.
  • Whether OpenRouter's official tool marketplace will directly squeeze this category.
