# Started the night the model dropped: how a "vLLM patch pack" got 83 stars in 2,563 days

**What it is** A set of vLLM patches, a quantization pipeline, and ready-made configs that let Qwen3.8-27B run on one 24GB 3090 with a single docker command: 127 tok/s for a single user, about 64 tok/s total across 1,035 concurrent requests.

**Why it took off** The night the model came out, it already had a working answer to the question local players care about most: "how fast will my card run this?" The author kept posting updated numbers on r/LocalLLaMA, and in October the headline "82→381 tok/s" got picked up and reshared again.

**B** **How you could follow it** Don't try to compete on Qwen3.8-27B on 3090. Wait for the next hot open model release, and on launch day build the fastest ready-made setup for the most common card (or for 16GB cards HyperQwen hasn't tested, AMD, or Apple silicon). Write the README the same way, with clear numbers and pitfalls, and post the build updates as a series on r/LocalLLaMA.

Grade B: the playbook is clear and repeatable, and r/LocalLLaMA has repeatedly shown it will star this kind of project. But the original slot is taken and copycats have already shown up. The next shot depends on a model release, and you need real inference-optimization skill and numbers that beat llama.cpp within a day or two. The bar and the timing are both bets. Buzzing in a small circle

On 2026 Aug 14, Alibaba put Qwen3.8-27B on Hugging Face. That same night (22:18 UTC), Mads Henrichsen of syv.ai, a small Danish company, pushed a commit: "Serving configs for Qwen3.8-27B on a single RTX 3090". 83 days later the repo was renamed HyperQwen, with 2,563 stars and 324 forks. It doesn't ship a new engine and doesn't sell anything. It just answers one question very well: I have this 3090 in hand, how fast can I run this new model? Below: how it got started, who it's competing with, and what you can learn from it if you want to build an open-source project that gets stars.

### What it is

A set of patches for a pinned vLLM version, plus a re-quantization pipeline and several ready-made launch configs. Users do three things: `git clone`, copy a `.env`, run `docker compose --profile single up -d`, and then reach an OpenAI-compatible, key-authenticated endpoint on local port `:18020`.

The first paragraph of the README gives three numbers, all measured on an RTX 3090 power-limited to 250W:

- **127 tok/s** : one person chatting, single-stream speed;

- **About 1,035 tok/s** : 64 requests running at once, combined throughput;

- **381 tok/s** : only holds when the answer is quoting a long prompt, such as code edits, rewrites, or translation.

Context of 150k, extendable past 240k. The author is blunt in the README: the repo is essentially "a set of patches plus a model-prep pipeline, with one model and one card tested to death."

### Why this one, why now

**The problem is well-defined.** 24GB 3090s and 4090s are the most common cards among people running models locally, and a 27B dense model in BF16 needs about 54GB of VRAM (thakicloud's estimate). So whenever a new model drops, the first question in the LocalLLaMA community is always "will my card run it, and how fast?" At the same time, llama.cpp ran this model at about 40 tok/s on 3090, rising to 66 with MTP (measured by openclawdc.com). Stock vLLM defaults either didn't fit or ran slowly on 24GB cards.

**It arrived early.** The first commit landed a few hours after the model went up, so the moment "Qwen3.8-27B 3090" started trending, there was already an answer you could run with `docker compose up`. The same day, someone also posted sudoingX/qwen38-mtp (367 stars), but that was just a single flag trick in llama.cpp, not a packaged service you could use right away.

### Where the stars came from

**First wave: the author posts a series on r/LocalLLaMA.** Around Aug 16 came the first post: 82 tok/s single-request, 672 combined peak. The next day, a follow-up with a new headline: "I pushed Qwen3.8-27B to 99 tps single request and 1150 tps with a batch request on a RTX 3090," with the speed gained at each step laid out in the body (the original Reddit post was blocked by anti-scraping, so the content is from the reposting site bittide). The same post went to Hacker News and got only 1 points, so the launch clearly ran on Reddit.

After that, users started posting on their own. On Aug 21, one person switched from LM Studio to vLLM, titled "I feel like I finally graduated", hit 143 tok/s, and named syv-ai in thanks. On Aug 24, another post: "qwen38-27b-rtx3090 is extremely good with deepseek harness". Under help threads like "How to run Qwen 3.8 27b on Windows 3090", people also replied recommending it. By Oct 17 it had 2,033 stars, most of them picked up during the September wave 8, roughly 32 a day on average (10-17 has no day-by-day data before that, so this is an average).

**The second wave: a headline.** In mid-October, a post on r/LocalLLaMA described a speed path going from "82 → 381 tok/s." Wccftech turned it into "RTX 3090 4.6x token generation." On X, a repost by @superalesha got about 1,325 likes and 85k views around 10-19 (relayed via aiposthub 10-20, not directly verified). Then came a wave of multilingual secondhand articles: geekus.fr in French, aiposthub in Traditional Chinese, thakicloud in Korean (10-27, comparing against their own B200), Qiniu Cloud (10-29), gffnews in Japanese, mushroom.cv in Simplified Chinese, and a YouTube Short titled "Qwen 27B Hit 381 Tok/s on a 3090. The Catch?" Many of these look like content-farm output. The faysalaziz.com piece is credited directly to "By George the bot."

Daily GitHub star gains line up with this wave: 10-20 +54,10-28 +54,10-29 +76 (the highest single day since 10-17), then it settled to 13–33 a day. The last 7 days: +144; the 7 days before that: +243. It's slowing down (GitHub daily data, as of 11-06).

**Skepticism spreads too.** Someone on dev.to ran their own test and said "real chats only have 118, and that title pattern breaks"; Sean O'Dea 10-29 wrote that decoding got 62% faster, but on a coding agent eval it was 43 seconds slower. The author had already written this into the README: 381 only holds when the answer quotes the prompt, and a separate docs/gotchas.md covers the pitfalls. The numbers say exactly where they apply, and when others test and push back on them, it just becomes another round of reposts.

### Why people stayed

Forks 324 / stars 2,563, about 12.6%, which is high for AI repos. Issue and PR numbers have reached 441, with 654 commits. Among external contributors, cpuchip has 150 contributions, TyroneNel 68, and EmilienIT 35 (GitHub, 11-06). That suggests plenty of people ran it on their own cards and came back to submit PRs, not just glanced and starred.

The author built this on purpose: the README has a "Field tests wanted" section, which says "if you have half an hour and a GPU we haven't touched". It comes with a 30-minute test procedure and an issue template for field reports. Reproduction results go into docs/reproductions/, with contributors credited. Third parties have already packaged weights on Hugging Face (VykosX/Qwen3.8-27B-HyperQwen-W4A16-Fast-Prepared). Each time the numbers go up (single user 82 → 99 → 127), and each time a new vLLM version is supported (0.28 → 0.32), that's a reason to post again.

### Who it's competing with

| Project | Approach | Launched | stars (around 11-06) | Compared with HyperQwen |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Neroued/ninfer | C++/CUDA engine written from scratch | 06-26 | 3,269 | No Python dependency, 71 tok/s single stream; weaker on concurrency and tool integration than the vLLM route |
| Don-Chad/ninfer-3090 | NInfer's 3090-specific edition | 07-21 | 501 | 140 tok/s single stream, single card and single stream only |
| noonghunna/club-3090 | A collection of recipes across multiple engines and models | 04-28 | 2,477 | Broad but shallow; its own discussion forum lists syv-ai as one of the best single-3090 setups |
| MiaAI-Lab one-click install | Aimed at 16–32GB cards and Windows beginners | 09-05 | About 600 | Doesn't chase peak speed |
| sudoingX/qwen38-mtp | A parameter that enables MTP in llama.cpp | 08-14 | 367 | Out the same day, not turned into a service |
| llama.cpp / Ollama / LM Studio | General-purpose approach | Already around | Largest | Easy to install, but only a few dozen tok/s for 27B on 3090; weak concurrency |

Copycats came too: some cloned it per card type, producing rtx5060, rtx4090, and 4080S 32G versions (antonybudianto, Alpha-Leader, BlueKingMuch); others moved the whole repo over as-is (NotHarshhaa/qwen38-27b-rtx3090). The author's response was to rename: from "qwen38-27b-rtx3090" to HyperQwen, with the tagline "run big Qwen on the GPU you actually own". The goal was to claim the "Qwen + consumer GPU" position instead of clinging to one model number.

### If it were you

**Verdict:** That specific spot is gone. Qwen3.8-27B on 3090 already has an owner, and copycats have crowded in. What's worth learning is the playbook: on the day the next popular open model drops, build the fastest, most usable ready-made setup for the most common card. It's a contest of skill and speed.

**Who it's for:** People who can really modify inference engines. You can read the source of vLLM, SGLang, or llama.cpp, you know quantization, speculative decoding, and KV cache, and you have a 3090/4090 or can rent one. Ideally you're already a familiar face on r/LocalLLaMA, so posts get seen.

**Who it's not for:** Anyone who only writes configs and Docker wrappers. "Recipe collections" already exist, as with club-3090, and one-click installers are already out there. If you can't show numbers clearly faster than what exists, there's no reason to post. It's also not for anyone hoping to make money from this; the author only put up a Ko-fi link, saying "support GPU time".

**How to do it:** Pick an open slot, one of three.

1. **Swap the model:** Watch for the next big open model (the next Qwen, DeepSeek, or a dense mid-size Gemma). Start work the day it's released, with the title "X on a 24GB card".

2. **Swap the card:** HyperQwen itself admits it has only been thoroughly tested on compute capability 8.6 (3090, 3080). 16GB cards (4060 Ti, 5060 Ti), Apple M-series, AMD cards, and dual-GPU setups are all open for "the fastest Qwen3.8-27B on this card", provided your numbers beat llama.cpp.

3. **Fill what it skipped:** It's Linux + Docker + command line. Native Windows, a desktop GUI, and one-click integration into coding agents are still things people keep asking for.

Whichever you pick, structure the README like theirs: put three numbers on the first screen, each with the conditions it holds under; a screen recording comparing "original vs your version"; a list of pitfalls; and a reproduction procedure others can finish in 30 minutes, with contributors credited.

**How to get stars:** r/LocalLLaMA is the main battlefield. HN barely helped (its HN post scored 1 points). Release in a series: the first post shows a working number, and each time the number improves, post again with the new number as the title. If the numbers are impressive enough, tech sites like Wccftech and multilingual content sites will pick it up on their own. If someone posts a challenge, reply and fold the real test results into the README.

**Deadline:** Have a first working version within 24–48 hours of the model's release, and post a second one within a week. HyperQwen started work within hours; come back a week later and the search terms and the "earliest working" spot are already taken.

**Where the bet could go wrong:** ① Within a week of the next big model's release, vLLM / llama.cpp officially reach near-patch speeds on 24GB cards, meaning the window for single-point optimization is closing. ② HyperQwen, after renaming, quickly absorbs new models and new cards (for example, supporting the next Qwen the week it ships), so the "swap the model" path gets taken by it, leaving you only card swaps and gap-filling. ③ Posts titled "X on 3090" are getting fewer upvotes on r/LocalLLaMA, a sign people are already tired of them.

### One line

HyperQwen (formerly syv-ai/qwen38-27b-rtx3090) is a set of patches for a pinned vLLM version, a re-quantization pipeline, and several launch configs. They let Qwen3.8-27B run on one 24GB RTX 3090 at 127 tok/s for a single user, about 1,035 tok/s combined across 64 concurrent requests, with 150k-262k context, exposed through an OpenAI-compatible API. The author is Mads Henrichsen (GitHub mhenrichsen, HN account mess1337) of the Danish company syv.ai.

### 1. Why it took off

#### 1. Timing: start building the day the model drops

- Qwen3.8-27B went up on Hugging Face on 2026-08-14 (miraflow.ai, benchlm.ai; before release Alibaba teased "Aug 15 midnight").

- The repo's first commit landed 2026-08-14 22:18 UTC, with the message "Serving configs for Qwen3.8-27B on a single RTX 3090"; the repo was created 08-15 (per the GitHub API). That means within hours of the model's release, it became one of the first ready-made solutions for "running this model on a single 3090."

- 3090/4090 These 24GB cards are what most people in the LocalLLaMA community actually have, and the 27B dense model needs about 16GB in BF54 (thakicloud). "Will my card run it, and how fast?" was the top question right after release. HyperQwen answered it with a single `docker compose up`.

#### 2. Distribution: back-to-back posts on r/LocalLLaMA, with the numbers climbing each time

- Around 2026-08-16 they posted v1 on r/LocalLLaMA: 82 tok/s single-request, 672 combined peak. Then 08-17 a follow-up, "I pushed Qwen3.8-27B to 99 tps single request and 1150 tps with a batch request on a RTX 3090", listing every optimization step (fp16 recurrent state, int8 activations, probabilistic-sampling MTP draft, etc.). bittide reposted the r/LocalLLaMA post (08/17). The same text on HN (news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49336792) got only 1 points. HN did almost nothing; Reddit was the launch point.

- Users then posted on their own: 08-21 "I feel like I finally graduated" (switched from LM Studio to vLLM, 143 tok/s, thanked syv-ai by name); 08-24 "qwen38-27b-rtx3090 is extremely good with deepseek harness"; later posts like "The bear can dance: Qwen 3.8 27B on one 3090 for 3 weeks" and "Swift 1.5 + HyperQwen = 37% less task completion time" (via Jina search summaries). People also recommend it under help threads like "Recommended way to run Qwen 3.8 27b on a 3090 in Windows?"

- By 10-17 the repo had 2,033 stars (our database). So most of the stars came from the 8-September Reddit wave (10-17 days from repo creation to 63, roughly 32 a day on average).

#### 3. Second wave: October headlines of "82 → 381 tok/s, 4.6x faster"

- In mid-October an r/LocalLLaMA post covering the speedup path "82 → 381 tok/s" was picked up by Wccftech ("RTX 3090 4.6x token generation", wccftech.com/rtx-3090-4-6x-token-generation-27b-llm-inference-optimizations). An X post by @superalesha got about 10-19 likes and 1,325k views around 85 (relayed by aiposthub.com 2026-10-20; not verified directly).

- A wave of multilingual secondhand coverage followed: geekus.fr (French, 10-20), aiposthub (Traditional Chinese, 10-20), genai-insight (10-21), thakicloud (Korean cloud provider, 10-27, comparing against their own B200), Qiniu Cloud (10-29), Tools4All (10-30), faysalaziz.com (11-01), mushroom.cv (Simplified Chinese, 11-03), gffnews (Japanese, 11-03), AlphaSignal (09-19), ai-tldr.dev, a YouTube Short "Qwen 27B Hit 381 Tok/s on a 3090. The Catch?", and X @Oluwaphilemon1 (11-05). Some wrote rebuttals and hands-on tests: dev.to prodbymarcu (10-16, "real chat does 118 and the headline mode crashes") and Sean O'Dea (10-29, "decode 62% faster, coding agent eval 43 seconds slower").

- Daily star adds in our database: 10-20 +54, 10-28 +54, 10-29 +76 (highest of the whole stretch), then it fell back to about 13-33 a day. The 10-28/29 peak lines up with the thakicloud article ("the claim that circulated on X this week") and the Qiniu Cloud piece.

- Note: most of these secondhand articles were mass-produced by SEO/AI content sites (faysalaziz openly says "By George the bot"). It shows the project became a "hot term" for content farms to chase, but each article brought few stars.

#### 4. Why people stay

- fork 324 / star 2,563 ≈ 12.6%, high for an AI repo; issue+PR numbers have reached 441, 654 commits, outside contributors include cpuchip (150 commits), TyroneNel (68), EmilienIT (35) and others (GitHub API). This isn't a "glance and star" repo. People are actually running it on their own cards and coming back to open PRs.

- The author built "get others to reproduce it" into the process: the README has "Field tests wanted", a 30-minute test protocol, a field-report issue template, and docs/reproductions/ to credit contributors. Hugging Face already hosts a third-party prepared-weights package (VykosX/Qwen3.8-27B-HyperQwen-W4A16-Fast-Prepared).

- Keeps pushing the numbers up (82 → 99 → 127 single-user, 672 → 1,150 → 1,035 stable concurrency) and tracks vLLM 0.28 → 0.32. Each update gives a reason to post again.

### II. Competitors

| Name | Form | Launched | Scale | How HyperQwen differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Neroued/ninfer(NInfer) | Open source, C++20/CUDA engine written from scratch | 2026-06-26 | 3,269 star(11-06);10-28→11-05 +51 | Its own weight format, 71 tok/s single-user (3090, gopenai blog), no Python dependency. HyperQwen patches vLLM, so its ecosystem compatibility is better and its concurrency is much stronger. |
| Don-Chad/ninfer-3090 | Open source, the 3090 edition of NInfer | 2026-07-21 | 501 star | 140 tok/s single-user (DFlash2), single card and single stream only |
| noonghunna/club-3090 | Open source, a multi-engine, multi-model "recipe collection" | 2026-04-28 | 2,477 stars; +8 in 27 days | Broad but shallow: covers Qwen/Gemma, 1-8 cards; its own discussion board lists syv-ai as one of the strongest single 3090 options |
| sudoingX/qwen38-mtp | Open source, one flag in llama.cpp enables MTP | 2026-08-14 | 367 star | Shipped the same day, but only a single-flag trick (+33-39%), no serving layer |
| MiaAI-Lab/Qwen3.8-27B-16gb-NVIDIA-GPUs-one-click-install | Open source, one-click install | 2026-09-05 | About 600 stars; +8 in 5 days | Aimed at 16-32GB cards and Windows beginners; doesn't chase peak performance |
| llama.cpp / Ollama / LM Studio | Open source / desktop app, general-purpose | Already existed | Largest | General-purpose and easy to install, but on 3090 a 27B model gets about 20-40 tok/s; Ollama needs 0.32.12 or later to support this model (dev.to kohei_wada) |
| Stock vLLM / SGLang | Open source, general-purpose inference engine | Already existed | Largest | Default settings don't fit or run slowly on 24GB cards. HyperQwen itself is 51 patches plus a quantization pipeline (per thakicloud's count). |
| ExLlamaV3 / TabbyAPI (EXL3 route) | Open source | Already existed | Medium | Strong single-user, weak concurrency. HyperQwen's roadmap item #103 plans EXL3 as a second quantization path. |

Copycats: yes. Per-card forks such as antonybudianto/qwen38-27b-rtx5060, Alpha-Leader/qwen38-27b-rtx4090, BlueKingMuch/HyperQwen-RTX4080S32, plus a batch of MiaAI-Lab repos named by hardware, "Qwen3.8-27B on X". The author renamed the project from "27b-rtx3090" to HyperQwen, aiming to extend to more Qwen models and cards and claim the "Qwen consumer-GPU inference" brand position.

### 3. Differentiation

1. **One model × one card, pushed to the limit** . Others ship a "general recipe" or a "new engine". This one does "Qwen3.8-27B on RTX 3090, squeezed dry" and publicly logs how many tok/s each step gained (docs/optimizations.md).

2. **Built on vLLM instead of a new engine** : users get a standard OpenAI-compatible API with key auth, a Docker image, and two modes (single-user speculative decoding or batched concurrency). Clients like coding agents and DeepSeek Harness connect at zero cost. The 64-way concurrency at 1,035 tok/s is something a custom single-stream engine can't offer.

3. **Punchy, clear numbers** : 127 / 381 / 1,035, one for each scenario. The README openly states that "381 only holds when answering with the referenced prompt." That honesty is what makes the numbers hold up to being reshared, and it has drawn plenty of "I tested it" write-ups.

4. **Treats community reproduction as part of the product** : test protocol, report template, contributor credits, and Ko-fi to fund GPU time.

These differences explain why it spread. Timing got it in front of people first. "Extreme single-point performance on vLLM with clean numbers" gave Reddit posts a reason to be reposted. The reproduction system turned users into contributors.

### 4. Visibility

It's being talked about in niche circles and has started drawing tech media and content farms: Wccftech, AlphaSignal, thakicloud, Qiniu Cloud, and others have covered it, and X has posts with thousand-like relays. But it's an open-source project that doesn't earn money (only Ko-fi), so there's no revenue to disclose. Star growth is slowing (7 days +144, the first 7 days +243).

### 5. Takeaways

- On release day for a popular open model, ship a ready-made solution for the card most people own, and claim the "X model on Y card" search term.

- Launch on r/LocalLLaMA as a serial "one post a day, numbers going up", with a comparison video (stock vLLM vs HyperQwen).

- Break benchmark numbers down by scenario and openly state the costs and pitfalls (docs/gotchas.md), so reposts and skepticism both spread it.

- Set up a reproduction protocol and turn users into testers and contributors.

### 6. Uncertainties

- 8-September star daily curve unavailable (the stargazers API returns 403 for our token, and our database starts from 10-17). Reddit post scores and comment counts unverified.

- The numbers in the Wccftech article and the @superalesha X post come only from aiposthub's relay.

- When a next-generation model like Qwen 4 arrives, will the "27B on 3090" advantage disappear? That depends on whether the renamed HyperQwen can keep up with new models.

- Stars don't equal usage. Real deployment numbers are unknown.
