557 stars, 39 downloads: how a Mac menu bar tool got its stars

What it is An open-source Mac menu bar app that shows which sessions in the Claude desktop app, Claude Code, and ChatGPT are running, finished, or waiting for your confirmation, and lets you drag sessions into a mind map.

Why it blew up The only real exposure was one tweet with 6K views from the Chinese tech account @geekbb. Most stars and forks look bought (forks confirmed, stars inferred), and the bought stars then pushed it onto Trendshift and various new-repo charts.

CHow you could follow Don't copy this library. If you want to build, build the unserved gap, a "desktop chat app session dashboard" or a cross-device version. Borrow its bilingual README, feature GIFs, and permissions table, pitch Chinese tech accounts, and judge success by downloads, not stars.

Grade C: growth came mainly from inflated numbers, real demand is unproven (39 downloads), and the same category already has coucou at 7K stars plus a long tail of small projects. You can learn README writing and an unserved angle, but chasing stars isn't worth it. Few people know about it yet

KIKUmap is a native Swift Mac menu bar app that gathers Claude and ChatGPT sessions in one place, showing who's running, who's finished, and who's waiting for your click, and lets you drag sessions into a mind map. It went from creation to 557 stars in 9 days and hit #1 on Trendshift's rising chart. Yet its installers across 8 versions were downloaded only 39 times in total, and its 100 forks were made by accounts registered the day before the repo was created, within 7 hours. This piece covers what it is, where the stars came from, what's real, and what you can take from it.

One tweet with 6K views, and 100 accounts registered the day before

On the morning of Oct 28, 2026, Yang Tang, a research associate at Ohio State University, created this repo under the GitHub account tang1693 and published v0.9.0 that same day. The account has 3 followers and this is its only repo.

The next day, Oct 29, between UTC 11:00 and 17:00 (7 hours), KIKUmap was forked 100 times: 11 at 50:00, 16 at 41:00, and 17 at 9:00. Of 12 accounts spot-checked, 11 were registered between 27 Oct, 7:30 PM and 11:30 PM (UTC), the day before the repo existed; the other 1 had already been deleted by GitHub. Each account had 4 to 5 public repos and 0 to 1 followers, with usernames like "English first name plus random letters", e.g. uishennagirdwood, loreeketteringhamgjw. To look real, they also forked neovim, fzf, and plane, each with one or two empty "xxx-site" or "xxx-react-app" repos.

On Oct 30, the Chinese tech account @geekbb posted on X:

"Kikumap gathers the status of all the pinned sessions in Claude and ChatGPT into the menu bar, so you can see at a glance which are running, which finished unread, and which are waiting for your click."

By Nov 6, the tweet had 6,291 views, 22 likes, and 12 replies, and was later syndicated into a WeChat article. It's the only solid external exposure I could find. On that same day the repo had 101 stars and exactly 100 forks.

What it actually is

The README's first line reads "A mind map for your Claude and ChatGPT chats, in the Mac menu bar": a mind map of Claude and ChatGPT sessions in the menu bar. It does two things:

  • Status. A spinning ring on the menu bar icon counts running sessions; a red badge counts finished-but-unread ones; a "!" appears when a session awaits your approval. You can turn on sound or voice to announce which session finished.
  • Map. Sessions pinned in the Claude desktop app and ChatGPT app, plus Claude Code sessions, sit in a left column. You drag them into a topic tree you build, add colors, shapes, and tags, all keyboard-driven.

It also ships with a timeline, stats, desktop widgets, usage lookup, and export of sessions to Markdown or import into another Claude account.

The technically messy part that others skipped: the Claude desktop app has no public API, so KIKUmap uses Mac accessibility permissions to read the Claude window's sidebar directly. For ChatGPT it reads files in the local ~/.codex, and for Claude Code it uses hooks. The app isn't Apple-notarized, so on first launch you have to click "Open Anyway" in System Settings. MIT license, free, with a Ko-fi tip link in the README.

(GitHub daily snapshot; 11-06 live counts from the GitHub API)

Look at forks first. On Nov 4 the count dropped to 92, with 8 removed by the platform; on the evening of Nov 3, from 20:45 to 21:11 UTC, 8 were added back immediately, and on Nov 5 it was back at 100. The fork count has long sat on an exact integer, and drops get refilled at once: the classic pattern of a fake-engagement service's "100 fork package, refill on drops". Watchers number 102, more than the 7 that the real popular project coucou (59K stars) has, which is also abnormal. The forks were bought; this one can be confirmed.

Now stars. GitHub no longer lets logged-out visitors list who starred a repo, so I can't check each one, and how many stars are fake can only be inferred. But there's a hard corroborating signal: downloads. KIKUmap ships a single Kikumap.dmg per version, and across 8 versions it has been downloaded 39 times (GitHub API, 11-06). With 557 stars, that's about 0.07 downloads per star.

Compare coucou, a real hit in the same category: 6,998 stars, 45,850 installer downloads, about 6.6 downloads per star. The gap between them is nearly 100 times. KIKUmap can also be built from source, but users of a menu bar app overwhelmingly download the dmg directly, so source builds can't close a gap that big. Star counts jumped by 118 one day, by 0 another, and by 89 another, which looks like batched delivery, though it could also just be snapshot timing. That part is uncertain.

Conclusion: most of the stars are likely fake (an inference, held with high confidence), and the number of people who actually used it is in the tens.

What the bought stars bought

Inflated counts still do something. Once stars are high, automatic rankings pick the repo up:

  • Trendshift rising chart, #1. On Nov 6 someone relayed it on X with "67 mentions · ~556★". The chart ranks automatically by stars and mentions, so inflated stars count the same.
  • Aggregator sites for "new GitHub repos". One listed it at #149 (when it had 408 stars); another aggregator had already indexed the README by Oct 29.
  • A few reposts. The Chinese side account @LeonDemonHunter on X (28 views), @Stanllll6o's "offshore toolkit" (17 views, with "#实用神器" marketing tone), and the English side account @ExiledonMoon writing "Someone finally built the missing Mac app" (53 views).

The author's own promotion: the README carries a Product Hunt badge (Nov 5), but the launch never made the front page and got very few upvotes (exact count unverified). The author has 5 subscribers on a YouTube channel that posted an intro video in Nov 5, which got 0 views. No Hacker News posts, and no tech press coverage.

Taken together, these account for 39 downloads, and don't account for the 400+ stars.

Who else is doing the same thing

"See which AI sessions are running, finished, or waiting for approval in the menu bar or notch" has been crowded for 2026 already:

ProjectStarsHow it compares to KIKUmap
Louis-CFM/coucou6,998 (45,850 downloads)Launched late September, watches coding agents like Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, and Gemini CLI, and lets you approve directly from the notch or iPhone lock screen. Doesn't cover Claude desktop chat, and has no map.

minchenlee/c9watch136Monitors all coding-agent sessions, with a command line, not chat apps

Claude-Usage-Tracker, Usage4Claude, and many moreA few hundred to 3.7kOnly track usage quotas, overlapping KIKUmap's usage widget
Mapify, MindMap AI, etc.Commercial products at scaleTurn chat content into a map; KIKUmap makes the sessions themselves the nodes
Built into Claude / ChatGPTFull user basePinning, Projects, and system notifications already cover part of the "done, notify me" need

KIKUmap does differ in two places: first, it watches ordinary chats and Cowork tasks in the Claude desktop app, not just coding agents; second, it draws sessions as a mind map, which no one else in this category does. @geekbb's willingness to share it probably comes down to those two points. But whether anyone wants them can't be proven by 39 downloads. I found no project that copies it.

Its weak spots

  • The numbers are fake, and they'll get seen through sooner or later. Download counts and the signup dates of fork accounts can be checked by anyone in five minutes.
  • Standing on someone else's interface. Reading the Claude sidebar relies on accessibility APIs, which can break whenever Claude ships a redesign. The usage lookup borrows the login that Claude Code and Codex store locally, and the README itself admits neither company has said this is allowed.
  • Off-putting to install. It isn't notarized, so you have to manually click "Open Anyway," and grant Accessibility permission. Some features also need "Full Disk Access." Tools like this struggle to retain people by nature.

If it were you

The verdict: the repo itself isn't worth chasing; most of its stars don't come from real demand. Two things are worth taking: an unvalidated but genuinely unclaimed angle, and a very good README template.

Who it's for: developers who already build small Mac tools and want an open-source project with stars, especially those who write Swift and are willing to spend time polishing demo GIFs.

Who it's not for: people hoping to get stars by building "yet another Claude Code status bar." That path already has coucou with 7 thousand stars and a long tail of projects with a few dozen. It's also not for people hoping to kick off with bought stars or forks; the reasons why it doesn't pay are below.

How to do it:

  1. If you build, build the part nobody has built: watch desktop chat apps (the Claude, ChatGPT, and Gemini desktop clients) rather than yet another CLI agent dashboard, or go cross-device and cross-machine (KIKUmap explicitly doesn't support sessions running on other computers or servers).
  2. Copy its README approach: bilingual, a GIF for every feature, and a table that spells out what each permission is used for and where data is stored. That's the strongest part of the whole project.
  3. Get real users first: check download counts at every release. The ratio of downloads to stars is the signal for whether you're doing it right.

How to get users: follow the @geekbb route. Chinese tech accounts are willing to feature a new "menu bar + AI" play; DM them with a GIF and one sentence. On the English side, Show HN has been cold for this category (most posts land at 2–15 points), while r/macapps and r/ClaudeAI on Reddit fit better. Don't buy stars or forks: it can get you onto Trendshift and a few aggregator lists, for a few dozen views, but fork accounts' signup dates and download counts will make anyone who looks closely drop you immediately. Reputation is the one thing open source lets you accumulate; don't trade it for vanity numbers.

When it stops being worth it: the Claude and ChatGPT desktop apps could ship their own unified status panel at any time, and then this kind of tool would lose its point entirely (inference). If you build, you should finish and ship within a few months.

Signs you've misread it: you ship a "desktop chat session board," and after a month downloads are still in the double digits, meaning the need never existed and only the coding-agent side that coucou covers was right. Or the Claude desktop app itself adds cross-session status alerts, and the angle disappears.

KIKUmap (tang1693/KIKUmap) research report

Research date 2026-11-06. Channel: GitHub. The conclusion first: the repo's star curve is mostly not driven by users. Forks are confirmed bought, and stars very likely include heavy inflation; real usage is only a few dozen downloads. There is organic traffic, but it's small: one Chinese X tech tweet, a few alt-account reposts, and self-reinforcement from the Trendshift risers list.

1. What it is

A native Swift/AppKit macOS menu bar app, MIT-licensed, by Yang Tang (GitHub tang1693, research assistant at Ohio State's GDA lab, 3 followers, and this is his only repo). It does three things:

  • Status: the menu bar icon uses a ring to count running Claude/ChatGPT sessions, a red badge counts sessions that finished but haven't been viewed, a "!" shows when a session is waiting for your approval, and it can announce by sound or voice which session finished.
  • Mind map: pinned sessions from the Claude desktop app and ChatGPT app, plus Claude Code sessions, are listed in a left column and can be dragged into a topic tree you build yourself, with colors, shapes, tags and keyboard controls.
  • It also includes a timeline, statistics, desktop widgets, usage lookup, and exporting sessions to Markdown or importing them into another Claude account.

Technically, it reads the Claude window's sidebar through Accessibility (Claude has no public API), reads ~/.codex for ChatGPT sessions, and uses Claude Code hooks for CLI sessions. The app isn't notarized, so on first launch you have to go to "Open Anyway." Source: README github.com/tang1693/KIKUmap; user profile via GitHub API users/tang1693.

2.1 forks were bought (confirmed)

  • Of the 108 fork records, 100 cluster in 2026-10-29 between 11:00–17:59 UTC, that's 7 hours: 11:00 with 50, 16:00 with 41, 17:00 with 9. The remaining 8 fall between 11-03 20:45–21:11 UTC (GitHub API /forks).
  • Of 12 sampled fork accounts, 11 were registered between 2026-10-27 19:27–23:34 UTC (the day before the repo was created). Each account has 4–5 public repos, 0–1 followers, and follows 0 people; the remaining 1 have been deleted by GitHub. The usernames are all "English name + random letters": uishennagirdwood, loreeketteringhamgjw, giselawarwickhbvx, and so on.
  • Besides forking KIKUmap, these accounts also forked neovim, fzf and plane, and each has one or two empty shell repos named things like "xxx-site" or "xxx-react-app". This is a common camouflage tactic in star/fork farms.
  • The fork count has stayed at exactly 100 for a long time: 11-04 dropped to 92, meaning the platform removed 8; 11-03 evening it was immediately restored by 8, and 11-05 returned to 100. This matches the "100 forks, replenish when some get dropped" package pattern of fork-buying services.
  • Watchers (subscribers) is 102, even higher than coucou's 59 with 7k stars, which is also abnormal.

2.2 stars were very likely heavily inflated too (inferred; we couldn't pull the stargazer list)

  • GitHub now requires authentication to list stargazers, and our token lacks permission, so we couldn't check them one by one.
  • The strongest corroboration is downloads: the Kikumap.dmg across all 8 releases totals just 39 downloads (v0.9.0 7, v1.0 9, 1.0.1 4, 1.0.3 1, 1.0.4 7, 1.0.5 2, 1.0.7 4, 1.0.8 5; GitHub API releases, 2026-11-06). Stars are 557, so each star corresponds to only 0.07 downloads.
  • Compare with a real, popular project in the same category, Louis-CFM/coucou: 6,998 stars, release downloads 45,850, about 6.6 downloads per star, a gap of roughly 100x. KIKUmap supports building from source, but most users of an app like this download the dmg directly, and building from source doesn't close that gap.
  • Within 2 days of creation the repo had 101 stars, and the only external exposure we can find (the @geekbb tweet) was posted only at 10-30 04:26 UTC, appearing in sync with the 100 forks.
  • The star count rose in step-like jumps (118 / 0 / 89 / 18 / 79 / 50), which could be batch purchases or simply snapshot timing mismatches. This point is uncertain.

3. Real external exposure (the organic part)

4. Competitors

The same idea (centralizing AI sessions in the menu bar, notch, or notifications: who's running, who finished, who's waiting for approval) has been crowded for 2026 year(s) already:

5. Differentiation

The real differences come down to two points:

  1. It watches regular chats and Cowork tasks in the Claude desktop app, not just Claude Code. Competitors almost all watch only coding agents. The Claude app has no API, so KIKUmap reads the sidebar through accessibility APIs, which is grunt work nobody else has done.
  2. It draws sessions as nodes in a mind map. In the agent status board category, that is a unique way to organize them.

But this differentiation is not why it gained stars. Real usage is only a few dozen downloads, and organic reach is one tweet with 6K views. The differentiation may explain why @geekbb was willing to repost it, but the star curve is mostly propped up by inflation. The costs are also clear: it depends on accessibility permissions, isn't notarized, and could break whenever Claude changes its UI. Tools like this struggle to retain users.

6. Copycats

None found.

7. Takeaways

  • In a saturated menu-bar category, switching the target (desktop chat, not just CLI agents) and adding an organizing method (mind maps) produces a new story, and Chinese tech accounts would repost it.
  • The README is strong: bilingual Chinese/English, a GIF for each feature, and a privacy table that explains every permission. Worth copying.
  • Cautionary example: 100 forks plus a pile of stars can push a repo onto Trendshift and various new-repo aggregators, buying a little secondary exposure, but a download count of 39 gives it away. When evaluating a new GitHub repo, two cheap reality checks are release downloads per star and the registration date of the fork accounts.

8. Uncertain

  • The stargazer list wasn't retrieved, so the share of inflated stars is an inference (from the download-to-star ratio and fork farms).
  • We can't tell whether the author bought the inflation or a third party (such as a promotion vendor) did.
  • The exact Product Hunt vote count was not verified.
  • Downloads from deleted releases (1.0.2, 1.0.6) may be missing from the count, but that doesn't change the order of magnitude.

This article was written by AI from public data and the data we collect daily. Numbers are sourced, and inferences are labeled.
