He wanted to play Need for Speed: Underground 2 with his brother again, and the web page ended up with over ten thousand people online at once
What it is A recompile of the 2004-era PC version of Need for Speed: Underground 2 that runs in the browser, plus a server that lets thousands of people cruise freely through that city at the same time.
Why it caught on The site streams the game data directly, so a childhood classic plays the moment you click. The officially shut-down Bayview free roam became a city where thousands meet, which makes for good short videos. After a Reddit fan-community launch, TikTok and seven or eight game outlets amplified it in turn.
BHow you could follow it Pick an old game with a signature multiplayer mode, officially shut down, hard to install in its original form, and with no browser port yet. Build on an existing recompile toolchain, add multiplayer at scale, and let players bring the data. Launch in fan Reddit communities first, then send it to the game press that's covering the trend.

th0mk/nfsu2-web brings the 2004-year-old PC game Need for Speed: Underground 2 (NFSU2) into the browser and runs a server so thousands can cruise that neon city at once. The repo was 18 days old at the time, with 864 GitHub stars. But what really took off was the website you can play the moment it opens, and the stars spilled over from there. Below: why it took off, where the stars came from, and how much room is left if you want to chase stars with an "old game in the browser" project.
"I know everyone is sick of vibecoded projects"
Around 2026 20, a developer named th0mk posted in both r/NFSU2 and r/needforspeed, titled "I've ported NFSU 2 to the browser, with working multiplayer" (I got Need for Speed Underground 2 running in the browser, multiplayer works). The first line of the body addressed the obvious reaction: "I know people may be a bit tired of the vibecoding projects popping up everywhere…" (post date inferred from the numbering and later coverage).
This was the first public repo on his GitHub account, which he'd opened 2014 years earlier. The homepage of nfsu2.xyz states the motivation:
"About 20 years ago, my brother and I played this game together. So I tried porting it to the browser so we could play together once more. It worked out surprisingly well, and things got a little out of hand."
Two days later, on Oct 22, the game outlet TheGamer ran a story, writing "at 3 a.m. US Eastern, over 1,000 players were in Bayview" and saying it was "as easy to pick up as a Flash game". By Nov 6, at 11 p.m. Beijing time, the live counter on the nfsu2.xyz homepage read 11,928 people playing, 4,455 in free roam.
What it is
An open-source project plus a website. Technically it's three steps: statically translate the original SPEED2.EXE x86 code into C and compile it to WebAssembly; swap DirectX 9 for WebGPU; audio runs on Web Audio. It works in Chrome and Firefox, runs up to 120 fps, widescreen, with gamepad, wheel and touch support, and it even plays in Safari on iPhone.
The core feature is multiplayer. NFSU2's most famous mode was free roam in the Bayview city, and EA's official online service shut down long ago. The author rewrote a server in Rust so free roam can hold thousands of players in one city: you see other people's cars, honk, form convoys, send quick chat phrases (the other side sees them in their own language), turn on ghost mode to drive through others, and save data syncs across devices.
The recompilation technique wasn't his invention. The homepage says the project is forked from TalhaMudo/NFSU2Recomp's MIT version from October 16. That upstream only went public in October 12, shipped only a native macOS build, and had no multiplayer. The README says "Built with the help of Claude Code." It has 18 days and 1,018 commits, with the author making 983 of them.
Why this one took off
In October alone, a dozen or so static-recompilation projects for old games popped up on GitHub, and NFSU2 had three or four of them. This one got traction because of the following, and most of these have little to do with the tech.
One: it runs the moment you click. The repo says "bring your own game copy," but the site serves about 2GB of game data straight from its own server (Notebookcheck 11-04 pointed this out). Other NFSU2 ports either make you copy game files yourself and install an APK, or are single-player only. EA no longer sells the original, and installing it on modern Windows means wrestling with DRM and widescreen patches. "No account, no install, works on your phone" is close to zero friction for someone who wants to relive their childhood.
Two: multiplayer gives you short-video material. "It runs in a browser" only gets a single moment of surprise. "You bump into other people online" is what makes something shootable. On TikTok, @fl8me_ posted "NFS IS STILL ALIVE!! WE ARE SO BACK" with 267k views and 23k likes, and another clip from the same account, "LOOK WHO I BUMPED INTO", got 125k views. @cloudual's "Need for Speed Underground 2 Is Playable Online in Your Browser" got 126k (TikTok, 11-06).
Three: a human story. "I wanted to play with my brother again." No in-app purchases; Ko-fi donations only buy a Discord role. Media and players are happy to speak up for someone like that.
Five: the community plugged in. On the homepage's language list, Brazilian Portuguese, Polish, Turkish, Ukrainian, Czech and more are translations and voice work from national mod communities made over a decade ago, and he credited each one as he integrated them. In recent issues, people are asking for speed-test zones, car clubs and license plates, and others are asking for Lithuanian, Bulgarian and Greek translations.
How the stars came
| Date | Cumulative stars | What happened |
|---|---|---|
| 10-19 | 0 | Repo created |
| Around 10-20 | — | Posted in two Reddit fan subs; HN had two reposts scoring 7 and 2 points, with no discussion |
| 10-22 | 67 | Covered by TheGamer |

| 10-28 | 398 | Single-day peak +86 |
| 10-30 | 463 | @fl8me_'s video with 267k views |
| 11-03 ~ 11-05 | 663 → 790 | Five tech outlets covered it in succession |
| 11-06 | 864 | 187 forks |
(Daily GitHub stars, 11-06.)
The curve has no spike; it climbs steadily by 30 to 80 a day, +401 over the last 7 days and +375 over the first 7. That looks like players arriving in waves via the "source" link on the site, not one promoted account pushing it. The fork-to-star ratio is about 22%, well above typical, which suggests a lot of people actually want to run it or modify it.
Compared with tens of thousands of concurrent players, 864 stars isn't much. Within the same recompilation wave, valentderah/totk-pc-recomp (a PC port of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom) was created at 10-29 and gained 4,824 stars in a week, reaching 5,113; BotW's SavageWindRecomp has 3,193, and the PS2 web recomp snuri00/ps2-web-recomp has 1,395 (GitHub, 11-06). Stars measure how hot an IP is among developers, not how many players it has (inference). Most people who play NFSU2 never visit GitHub.
Who else is in the space
| Project | Scale | Compared with alternatives |
|---|---|---|
| TalhaMudo/NFSU2Recomp | 160 stars, 10-12 | The upstream. Native macOS build only, no multiplayer, you bring your own game; later switched to a proprietary license banning forks, ports and hosting |
| codepdbh/nfsu2-recompiled | 360 stars, 10-06 | Native Windows / Android builds; you copy the game files yourself |
| nfsunderground2.site | Unknown | Web port of the PS2 version; two-player rooms only, with ads |
| nfsu2.org, nfsu2.net, etc. | Unknown | Single-player mirror pages and "nfsu2.xyz guide" sites, siphoning its search traffic |
| Browser versions of Halo CE and the Black Ops zombies mode | Covered by some media outlets | Same playbook, different IP |
People are already making SEO pages to siphon its traffic, which means there are plenty of people searching "NFSU2 browser."
Two landmines
- Copyright. The site distributes EA's game data directly. A line at the bottom of the homepage reads "Rights holders: legal (at) nfsu2.xyz," so the author clearly knows. A DMCA takedown is likely eventually (inference), and then the site may have to switch to "bring your own game," which drops the friction right back to square one.
- Upstream turns on them. After being forked, the upstream moved to a proprietary license that bans porting. nfsu2-web states it only uses code from 10-16's MIT version, which is probably legally defensible, but how the two sides get along from here is unclear.
The author pays for servers and bandwidth himself. The Ko-fi goal reads "two top-tier Claude subscriptions plus a year of server costs" and is 67% funded, with the amount not disclosed.
If it were you
B: the formula "old game + browser + large-scale multiplayer" can be copied, and AI has sped up development a lot, but this wave is already crowded. How many stars you get depends on which IP you pick. The step that really made this one take off, directly hosting the data, is exactly the one you shouldn't copy.
Who it suits: developers who know some reverse engineering, WebAssembly or graphics APIs, and who are willing to grind through two or three weeks with tools like Claude Code; old-game fans who know where that game's community lives and which mode they miss most.
Who it doesn't suit: people with no low-level experience who expect AI to write a recompiler from scratch for them; people who only want stars and don't want to run servers and a community (once multiplayer is live, there are bugs and new requests every day); people who can't take the legal risk, or who think a "bring your own game" version would blow up like this one (it wouldn't, the friction difference is too large).
How to do it:
- Picking the IP: it needs to meet three conditions. It had a signature social or multiplayer mode, its official servers are shut down, and the original is hard to run on modern systems. Also search GitHub first to check that nobody has recompiled it yet, or that someone has but only made a single-player native build. Racing games, arcade fighters, and the cities and lobbies of early MMOs suit this better than story-driven single-player games.
- Build on an existing recompiler: N64Recomp and XenonRecomp are public, and this project itself was forked from someone else's MIT version. Your job is the browser layer and the multiplayer server; don't reinvent the wheel from scratch.
- Make multiplayer into a shootable scene: chance encounters, honking, convoys and quick chat phrases spread better than "120 fps."
- Route the data through "bring your own game": let players point the web page at their local original files. Far fewer people will show up, but the project can survive. Keep no game data at all in the open-source repo.
- Bring in the national mod communities: integrate their translations and credit them by name. That's both a feature and a distribution channel; it's how older players in Eastern Europe and Latin America found it.
How to get users: launch first on the game's Reddit fan sub, copying its title format ("I ported X to the browser, multiplayer works"), and open the body with "I know everyone's sick of vibecoding." Then send the link to journalists at TheGamer, XDA and Notebookcheck, who are already covering "old games in the browser." Make the README spell out "how to play" and "made with AI": the first is for players, the second for developers and tech press. Stars will keep flowing in from the site.
How early you need to be: this wave started in October, and TheGamer already says "dozens in the past few months." Media appetite for this kind of story will probably run out by Q1 of 2027 (inference), and good IPs will get snapped up quickly. If you're doing it, launch within a month.
Signs you've misjudged it: (1) EA or another major publisher starts issuing DMCAs against this kind of web port in bulk, and even the "bring your own game" versions get taken down, which closes this path; (2) similar projects launched after this one still sit at a hundred or two stars despite media coverage, meaning the wave has passed; (3) conversely, if someone reaches thousands of concurrent players with the "bring your own game" approach, hosting isn't necessary, and this path is wider than estimated here.

Why th0mk/nfsu2-web (Underground 2 Revived / nfsu2.xyz) works
Research date 2026-11-06. Channel: GitHub.
One line
It's a browser port of the 2004 PC game Need for Speed: Underground 2 (NFSU2). It statically translates the x86 code of SPEED2.EXE into C, compiles it to WebAssembly, swaps D3D9 for WebGPU, runs audio on Web Audio, and ships its own server for free-roam multiplayer. The repo says "bring your own game copy," but the author's own site nfsu2.xyz serves about 2GB of game data directly from its own server (reported by Notebookcheck 2026-11-04; nfsu2.net also says it "streams its data from its own host"), so players can click and play straight away. What actually got run was this website; the GitHub stars are just the overflow from the site's popularity.
Data (our github repo + GitHub API, 2026-11-06)
- Repo created 2026-10-19; 18 days in, 864 stars and 187 forks (fork/star ratio about 22%); in the last 7 days +401, in the 7 days before that +375, peak single day +86 (10-28). From 10-21's 30 star mark onward it grows steadily at 30–80 a day, with no spike. That's the shape you get when media and short-video mentions keep arriving one after another.
- 18 days, 1,018 commits, 983 of them by the author th0mk alone. README says "Built with the help of Claude Code," and commits carry the Claude Opus 5.5 co-author tag. GitHub account registered 2014 years ago, 91 followers, this is its only public repo, and there's no X account.
- Issues and PRs have been dense over the last two days: roman01la (Roman Liutikov) and others are proposing new free-roam features (speed tests, car clubs, license plates), and there are translation PRs for Lithuanian, Bulgarian, and Greek, plus bugs in lift.py and the Win32 layer. The community is contributing, not just watching.
- Comparison: in the same wave of "static recompilation" repos on GitHub, the ones with more stars include valentderah/totk-pc-recomp (created 10-29, 5,113 stars, +4,824 in 7 days), Revivedx/SavageWindRecomp (BotW, 3,193), peiikai/LASRecomp (2,149), and snuri00/ps2-web-recomp (1,395) (our github repo). By stars, nfsu2-web is only mid-tier. Its strength is that people actually play it.

2. Why users show up
- Play a childhood classic with zero friction: EA stopped selling the original long ago, and there's no official remake; installing the original on modern Windows means wrestling with DRM and widescreen patches. nfsu2.xyz opens in a web page, no account, no install, and it also works on phones and iPhone Safari 26 (PLAYING.md; TikTok @streetking9102 "works in iPhone browser"). Media framing: "playable at a moment's notice like a Flash game" (TheGamer).
- Multiplayer is the hook for spread: NFSU2's most famous feature was the Bayview city free roam, and EA's original online service shut down long ago. The author wrote a Rust server and turned it into a free roam where thousands share the city, adding convoys, quick chat, horns, ghost mode, and cross-device cloud saves. The most-viewed TikToks are about "bumping into other players online" (@fl8me_ "LOOK WHO I BUMPED INTO," 125k views), a format that suits short video.
- A personal story: the homepage says "20 years ago my brother and I played together, and I wanted to play with him once more." There are no in-app purchases; Ko-fi donations only get you a Discord role.
- The AI-coding angle: XDA's headline is "Someone used Claude Code to get NFSU2 running in browsers," which pulled in the AI crowd too.
3. Retention and monetization
- Retention comes from the multiplayer community, Discord, donor roles, and a constant stream of new features (issues mention achievements, treasure hunts, scheduled car-club races, speed zones, etc.).
- Money: only Ko-fi (ko-fi.com/nfsu2xyz, 176 followers, goal "2 Claude Ultra + a year of server costs" 67% complete, amount not disclosed). No ads, nothing for sale.
How it's different
| Comparison target | Where they differ |
|---|---|
| Upstream TalhaMudo/NFSU2Recomp (160 stars, 10-12 on) | Upstream only ships a native macOS app, has no multiplayer, and requires you to bring your own game files; after the fork, upstream switched the license to proprietary (the current LICENSE bans forking, porting, and hosting). nfsu2-web delivers a browser version, servers, multiplayer, and hosts the data directly |
| codepdbh/nfsu2-recompiled (360 stars, 10-06 on) | Native APKs for Android and Windows; you copy in your own game files and download and install |
| nfsunderground2.site | A browser port of the PS2 version that supports only two-player rooms with frame-synced input, and it runs ads; no thousand-player free roam |
| nfsu2.org, freebie.games and similar | Wrapper or mirror pages, single-player only, monetized through SEO and referral traffic |
| Community NFSU2 private servers / LAN mods | Requires installing the original plus mods; high barrier |
| Other browser ports of old games from the same period (Halo CE, COD Black Ops 1 Zombies, etc., which TheGamer mentions) | Same playbook, different IP; NFSU2's selling point is the open city and large-scale shared servers |
The differentiator is "hosting plus multiplayer": others either make you bring your own game (compliant, but a high bar) or offer single-player only. This one hosts the data on its own servers so you click and play, and adds a shared city for thousands. That's why it took off. The recompilation tech is upstream's, and a dozen recompilation projects shipped the same month, so the tech itself isn't scarce.
Growth tactics (no evidence of paid acquisition)
- The author launched in Reddit fan communities (r/NFSU2, r/needforspeed); HN and X only picked it up later, sporadically.
- Organic game-media coverage: TheGamer 10-22, then eTeknix, TechPowerUp, Notebookcheck, XDA, Retro Dodo, psx-place; gameseal also framed it as a "2000s-era old games come to the browser" trend.
- Organic content from TikTok and YouTube creators: searching "nfsu2 browser" turns up several videos with 50k to 270k views (@fl8me_, @cloudual, @jvrsexp, @a2p.visuals), plus Indonesian and Spanish tutorials, and Indonesian players are already hosting their own rooms.
- SEO parasite sites: nfsu2.net published an "nfsu2.xyz guide," and nfsu2.org runs a single-player mirror plus referral links. That means search traffic is big enough for others to try to capture it.
- Multilingual: the game and site support a dozen-plus languages (Turkish, Ukrainian, Polish, Brazilian Portuguese, etc.). The author pulled in translation and localization work from various national mod communities, which picked up nostalgic users in Eastern Europe and Latin America.
Visibility
Already widely discussed: at least 7 media outlets covered it, several TikToks topped 100k views, and mirror and SEO sites have appeared. Revenue isn't public beyond the Ko-fi progress bar.
Risks (what determines whether this can last)
- The site directly distributes roughly 2GB of EA's game data; Notebookcheck explicitly pointed out that "the repo says it contains no game data, but the website is serving it." The homepage lists "Rights holders: [email protected]," so a DMCA notice could come at any time.
- The upstream author switched the license to proprietary after the fork, banning forks and ports; nfsu2-web states it only uses code from the MIT version 10-16, but the relationship between the two sides and any later dispute are unclear.
- Server and bandwidth costs are borne personally and covered only by donations.
What others can borrow
- The formula: an old game with nostalgic IP, officially shut down or delisted, and hard to install in its original form. Use AI-assisted static recompilation to turn it into a browser version that runs on open, then build the most famous social features from back then into large-scale shared-server multiplayer. Launch first on a Reddit fan community, and let short videos and media spread it on their own.
- Social multiplayer features (bumping into people, convoys, horns) supply the short-video material, which spreads better than "it runs in the browser" alone.
- One person with Claude Code, 1,000 commits in 18 days: development speed is no longer the barrier. The barrier is picking the right IP and being willing to host copyrighted data. The latter is legal risk, and copying it is not recommended.
Uncertain
- Actual concurrent users and total players (TheGamer says 1,000+, XDA says about 5,000, Notebookcheck says 6,000, but this may be capacity, unverified); the exact date and vote count of the Reddit launch post (blocked by Reddit, not read).
- How much Ko-fi actually collected; whether EA sends a legal letter; the upstream license dispute.
- 10-17 TikTok @medsan95's "NFS Underground in your browser" (150k views) predates this repo; it may be a different port or NFSU1, unverified.
