DHH says he's replacing the default file manager, and one 66-follower developer jumped in: Flea hit 1,000 stars in two months
What it is A GUI file manager built only for DHH's Omarchy distro, pitched as the fastest one, deeply integrated with the system theme and top bar, and meant to replace Nautilus as the default.
Why it blew up DHH publicly put up a bounty for a new default file manager and named Flea. Omarchy's maintainers added it to the official package repo on day one. Add a benchmark table that anyone can check for "fastest" and 23 releases in two months, and it became one of the two finalists in the contest.
CHow you could play it Don't crowd into the file manager race. Copy the playbook instead: watch for the next default component the platform owner publicly says they want to replace, ship a working version within days, get it into the official repo the same day, and let the maintainers vouch for you. Or build a same-category tool for all Hyprland users.

Omarchy is a Linux distro made by DHH. Its default file manager has always been GNOME's Nautilus, and the community complains it doesn't feel like part of this desktop. In September, DHH publicly said it would be replaced and that "whoever does it best" wins. Flea is one of the two front-runners in that contest, and nearly all of its stars came from a few moments in that race. Below: how it took off, why it and not someone else, and whether it's worth chasing the same stars yourself.
A quote repost
On the evening of Sep 10, 2026 GM, a developer on GitHub going by thisisgm, posted on X: "Flea 0.2.0 is out!" followed by a list of new features: dual-pane view, "Open with," a restorable trash, and rename in every view. The last line: "If you gave up on Flea in the first week, try again. It's so much better." The post got 424 likes.
A few hours later, on Sep 11, DHH quote-posted it:
It's clear that the days of Nautilus as the default file manager in Omarchy are numbered. There are a lot of great attempts at its successor, and Flea is definitely among them. We will coronate a new default either for Quattro RS or the version after. May the best attempt win!
The gist: Nautilus's days as Omarchy's default are numbered, many people are trying to take its place, Flea is surely one of them, and the new default will be settled in the next release or the one after that, with the best one winning. The post got 1,674 likes.
That post set a prize: "Become the default." Flea was named directly as a contender.
GM is not an influencer. His GitHub bio reads "Infrastructure and reliability" and he has 66 followers. He had built some small add-on tools for Omarchy before, and the best of them has 246 stars. Flea is a repo Sep 2 created. By Nov 6 it had 1,062 stars, 113 forks, and 62 open issues (GitHub, 11-06).
What it is
A GUI file manager for Omarchy. The frontend uses Quickshell/QML, the backend is Rust, and the first line of the README is "the fastest GUI file manager on Omarchy."
The feature set is complete: four views (list, split, grid, dual-pane), spacebar quick preview for images, PDFs, video, and archives, connections to SMB, SFTP, WebDAV, and Taildrop, writing ISO files to USB drives, reading the iPhone photo library directly, and keybindings in default, Vim, Mac, or Windows styles.
What makes it feel like part of the system is the Omarchy integration: it follows Omarchy's theme and window transparency, adds a "shelf" to the Omarchy top bar (a holding spot for files you then drag into other apps), and can take over Super+Shift+F and the system open/save dialogs. Install is a single line:
omarchy pkg add flea && flea --default
The README says it is "only published to the Omarchy official package repo." Users had already moved over from the earlier AUR version.
Where the stars came from
Day-by-day star counts for September aren't available. All we know is that it had 17 by Oct 818, meaning most of its stars came in the month-plus after DHH's post. The numbers after Oct 17 (GitHub):
| Timeline | star | new during the period | What happened those days |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10-17 | 818 | — | Released 0.3.12 |
| 10-17 to 10-27 | 818 → 850 | +2 to +11 per day | Flat |
| 10-28 to 10-30 | 850 → 912 | +15, +24, +23 | Omarchy volunteer Chris Hallas posts an endorsement |
| 11-01 to 11-04 | 931 → 954 | Single digits a day, rising to +16 | 11-03 release 0.4.0 |
| 11-05 | 1,043 | +89 | Omarchy 4.5 released, Flea enters the "fast ring" |
| 11-06 | 1,062 | +19 |
Four pushes you can actually confirm:
It was in the official repo on day one. 0.1.0 was released in the early hours of Sep 3. That afternoon, ryanrhughes, the maintainer with the most commits to the official Omarchy package repo (2,174 commits, and DHH himself has 523), submitted "Add hardened Flea package." Every update after that was merged by someone on the Omarchy side. On Nov 5, he moved Flea into the "fast ring": when the author releases, stable users get it right away instead of waiting 24 hours (omarchy-pkgs PR #2178).
DHH's quote repost. Covered above. It's the biggest single push. There's no way to measure exactly how many stars it brought, but by mid-October the count had reached 818, and after that the daily gain was usually single digits.
A volunteer's endorsement. On Oct 28, Chris Hallas, who lists himself as an Omarchy volunteer on X and built ODK, a dev toolkit for writing Omarchy apps, posted "I fully endorse Flea as the future default file manager for Omarchy," calling it "a labor of love." For the next three days it gained about twenty stars a day, several times its usual pace. The community site Omarchy Central then ran a piece on it.
Tutorials and posts in the community. On Sep 16, Hysen Labs wrote an install guide. On Sep 30, Starry Hope published a tutorial. r/omarchy carried posts like "Flea: A fast GUI file manager for Omarchy" and "Meet Flea & Strata." On Nov 3, another post went up on 0.4.0.
On Nov 5, +89. The timing lines up with the Omarchy 4.5 release, Flea entering the fast ring, and 0.4.0's Reddit post. But 4.5's release notes don't mention Flea or change the default file manager. So the likelier story is that new and returning users from 4.5 installed it on the side. How much each of the three drove it can't be separated (inference). On the same day, its most direct rival Strata only gained 11, so this spike was Flea's own, not the whole niche moving together.
I found no sign it made HN, GitHub trending, or major Linux media. Its reputation lives almost entirely inside the Omarchy circle.
Who else is in the race
The race has no shortage of contenders. At least five file managers are being built specifically for Omarchy:
| Project | Launched | Scale (11-06) | How Flea differs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nautilus(GNOME Files) | Very early | Current default | Doesn't follow Omarchy's theme. It's the one being replaced. |
| Strata(lgse/strata) | 08-28 | About 1,550 stars, covered by It's FOSS and Linuxiac | Rust + GTK4. Launched 5 days before Flea, more stars, more outside coverage, also in the official repo. |
| omanta(OmaTools) | 08-10 | 53 star | Also Qt Quick and also claims to be native. The author's YouTube videos have 17k views, but it's not in the official repo. |
| omafiles (two projects with the same name) | 08 to 09 | 55 / 34 star | No updates since September |
| hyprfm | 2026-03 | 348 star | Targets all Hyprland users, not specifically Omarchy |
| yazi / Dolphin / Thunar | Very early | yazi, 43k stars | General-purpose tool. Doesn't integrate with Omarchy's theme, top bar, or dialogs. |
Only Strata and Flea have really taken off, and both are in the official repo. The author of omanta has YouTube traffic and a similar product direction, yet has only 53 stars. In this race, what decides stars is first whether the platform accepts you, and only second the product.
Why this one
It got into the official channel. One command installs it, sets it as default, and keeps it updated with omarchy update. Contenders outside the official repo make users install from the AUR or source, which is a noticeably higher bar.
"Fastest" can be verified. The README includes a benchmark table for 7 file managers, with the method and raw data attached. In the Nov 2 round, on a folder with 100k files, Flea settled at 0.75 seconds, Strata at 1.80 seconds, Dolphin at 5.25 seconds, and Nautilus at 20.33 seconds, and it also used the least memory. Searching 1M files, the first result came back in 166 ms. Under the table, the author honestly listed where it lost (search result ranking is weaker than two rivals). DHH cares a lot about performance, and the 4.5 release notes include a whole section on millisecond speedups. That message fits this community's taste.
A caveat: these are all the author's own measurements on his own machine. In the October round Nautilus took 6.59 seconds, and in the November round it took 20.33 seconds. Versions and test conditions changed, and the numbers moved a lot. Readers can use them as a directional signal for "which is faster," but not as a precise ranking.
Same technology as the system. Omarchy's own desktop shell is built on Quickshell, and Flea uses Quickshell for its frontend too. That's how it can offer system-level integration like the top-bar shelf and following theme transparency. Strata uses GTK4, which can't go that deep.
Most frequent updates. From Sep 3 to Nov 3, it went from 0.1.0 to 0.4.0, with 23 releases in two months. Every major release went out on X and Reddit. In a race to see who does it best, shipping often is itself something for the judges to see.
What it doesn't do, and what's still open
- It serves only one distro. Flea is explicitly for Omarchy, and even the build requires Omarchy to be installed. Hyprland users and other tiling-desktop users can't use it.
- The race isn't over. 4.5 hasn't changed the default. DHH said "the next release or the one after that." Two PRs in the main Omarchy repo (#10542 and #16741) would add a file manager option under Settings > Default Apps. Flea is among the candidates, and neither has been merged. If the outcome is "let users pick," the prize of "becoming the default" gets much smaller.
- Strata still leads. It has more stars and more media coverage. Both projects are in the official repo, and nobody knows yet which one will become the default.
If it were you
Verdict: C. There's something to learn, but following it isn't a good bet. The Omarchy file manager race already has two finalists, both in the official repo, and a sixth entrant is unlikely to get stars. What Flea is really worth studying is the playbook: when a platform owner publicly says they want to replace a default component, sign up immediately, get into the official channel, and let the platform's people vouch for you. But the opportunity only exists once the platform speaks first. You can't force it, and the circle is small, so the best outcome is still around a thousand-plus stars.
Good fit for: developers who already use Omarchy, Hyprland, or similar niche but sticky desktops, who can watch the posts from DHH and the maintainers, and who can ship a working version within days. Also people comfortable with Rust, QML, or system tools, who can make performance measurable and comparable.
Not a good fit for: people who don't use this desktop and just want to pick a hot topic from outside (you can't know on day one what the platform will replace, and you won't get the maintainers' trust); people who want a lot of stars (the best result in the Omarchy circle is still around a thousand-plus).
How to do it, ranked by how worthwhile:
- Watch the next default component that's about to be replaced. The Omarchy issues and discussions show which default apps the community says "don't feel like this desktop." That's how the file manager got called out. When DHH or a maintainer speaks, ship 0.1 within three days and submit packaging to the official repo the same day. The same playbook works on any platform with an "official plugin or package repo plus a vocal lead."
- Serve the audience Flea doesn't: a file manager just as fast and just as deeply theme-integrated, but built for all Hyprland or other tiling-window desktops. hyprfm has only 348 stars, so that spot is still open. The downside is you don't get the "platform owner named you" boost, so the product and the benchmark table have to do all the talking.
- Build reputation by contributing to Flea: it has 62 open issues and a plugin system (PLUGINS.md). Building a few useful plugins or fixing a few major bugs gets you a name in the Omarchy circle, not your own stars.
How to get users: On day one, get into the official package repo so it installs with one command. Put a test table with the method and raw data on the first screen of the README, comparing against the system default and the strongest rival. Post on X at each major release, tag the platform lead, and post in the platform's subreddit at the same time. Get a volunteer or maintainer of the platform to publicly say "I back this as the default."
When was the window: The file manager race is already late to enter. The next window is one to two weeks after the platform opens its mouth. Flea was building before DHH spoke, and it was in the repo on day one, which is how it caught the moment.
What would mean I read it wrong: ① If over the next month or two a new Omarchy file manager comes from behind and reaches a thousand-plus stars, the race isn't settled and a late entry still has a shot. My read was too conservative. ② If Omarchy finally picks Flea as the default and its stars double again because of it, then being the default is worth more stars than I estimated, and the next component is worth watching closely. ③ The other way: if no one ends up as the default and it just adds an option, and Flea and Strata both stall at today's numbers, then the prize for this kind of race is that small.

Why Flea (thisisgm/flea) got off the ground
In one line: Flea is a GUI file manager built for Omarchy (DHH's Arch + Hyprland distro), with a Quickshell/QML frontend, a Rust backend, and a "fastest" pitch. It took off because DHH publicly said on 2026-09-11 that "the days of Nautilus as the default file manager are numbered… we'll pick a new default and see who does it best." That started a "pick the default file manager" race in the Omarchy community. Flea is one of the two earliest entrants, updating most often and most tightly tied to the distro. Its stars rose with a few moments in that race: DHH's quote-tweet, the volunteer endorsement, and the Omarchy 4.5 release.
1. Basic data
- 2026-09-02 created the repo. As of 11-06 it had 1062 stars, 113 forks, and 62 open issues (data card, GitHub repo). The owner is a personal account, GM (@thisisgm, bio: "Infrastructure and reliability", 66 GitHub followers). They maintain 20 Omarchy-related repos, and their earlier omarchy-pods has 246 stars.
- Releases came fast: v0.1.0 (09-03) through v0.4.0 (11-03). That's 23 releases in two months (GitHub releases).
- Over the last 7 days it gained 150 stars, versus just 70 in the 7 days before that. On 11-05 it added 89 in a single day. On the same day, its main rival Strata only gained 11 (github repo_day), so this spike is Flea's own, not a rise across the whole ecosystem.
- GitHub's stargazer timestamp API returned no data for this repo, so I can't get the day-by-day curve before 10-17. All I know is that by 10-17 it had 818 stars, which means most of them came in September.
2. Competitors
| Product | Form | Launched | Scale | How Flea differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nautilus(GNOME Files) | Big-company / system default | Very early | Omarchy's current default | GTK/GNOME style, doesn't follow Omarchy themes. In Flea's tests, a 100k-file folder takes 20 s to stabilize. It's the thing this race is meant to replace. |
| Strata(lgse/strata) | Open source, Rust + GTK4 | 2026-08-28 | 1563 stars (11-06 about 1552, GitHub repo). Covered by It's FOSS and Linuxiac, and in the Omarchy official package repo. | The most direct rival. 5 days older than Flea, with more stars and more press. Flea's README uses it as the main comparison (100k files in 1.80 s vs 0.75 s). |
| omanta(28allday/omanta,OmaTools) | Open source, Qt Quick + GIO | 2026-08-10 | 53 stars. The author's own NO SIGNAL YouTube channel (9K subscribers) has a video with 17k views. | YouTube traffic didn't turn into stars. Not in the official package repo. |
| omafiles (one each from Percius04 and aloisdeniel) | Open source Qt6 / other | 2026-08 to 09 | 55 / 34 star | Stopped updating early (no commits since September) |
| Omafile | Omarchy plugin | Not verified | Not verified | Distributed through the plugin directory |
| hyprfm | Open source Qt6/QML | 2026-03 | 348 star | Built for all of Hyprland, not tied to Omarchy specifically. |
| yazi / Dolphin / Thunar / Nemo | Terminal TUI / long-standing GUI | Early | yazi, 43k stars | All general-purpose tools with no integration into Omarchy themes, menus, or the file picker dialog. |
Bottom line: this niche isn't short on entrants. At least 5 file managers were built specifically for Omarchy. Only Strata and Flea actually made it through, and both are in the omacom/omarchy-pkgs official package repo.
3. Growth tactics (where users come from)
- Officially adopted by the distro, in the package repo on day one (confirmed): v0.1.0 was released by 09-03 03:21, and that same day 17:41 ryanrhughes, the biggest contributor to the Omarchy package repo (2174 commits, with dhh in second place at 523), submitted "Add hardened Flea package." Every release since has been merged by him or someone on the Omarchy side. 11-05 He also placed Flea in the "fast ring," so upstream releases reach stable users right away instead of after a 24-hour wait (omarchy-pkgs PR #2178). Installation is a single line,
omarchy pkg add flea && flea --default, and the README states it ships only in the Omarchy official package repo. The AUR version has been delisted and migrated over. - DHH quote-tweet (confirmed, the biggest push): 09-10 The author announced 0.2.0 (424 likes). 09-11 DHH quoted the post: "It's clear that the days of Nautilus as the default file manager in Omarchy are numbered… Flea is definitely among them. We will coronate a new default either for Quattro RS or the version after. May the best attempt win!" (1674 likes, x.com/dhh/status/2098309583873642950). The post attached the prize, becoming the default, and named Flea as a contender.
- Community content (confirmed): Hysen Labs install guide (09-16), Starry Hope tutorial (09-30, posted by the author to r/omarchy), Reddit threads "Flea: A fast GUI file manager for Omarchy" and "Meet Flea & Strata | Omarchy 1st File Managers" (around 10-04), listing on omarchyapps.com, and an Omarchy Central feature (after 10-28).
- Omarchy volunteer endorsement (confirmed): 10-28 Chris Hallas (X bio: "OMARCHY.org volunteer", maker of ODK) posted: "I fully endorse Flea as the future default file manager for Omarchy." Over the following 3 days it added 15, 24, and 23 stars, against a prior rate of only 2 to 10 a day (github repo).
- Around the Omarchy 4.5 release (inferred): 11-03 shipped 0.4.0. The README got new test data, and r/omarchy had a "Flea File Manager, Zero|Quattro|Zero is live!" post. 11-05 Omarchy 4.5 officially released (GitHub release 11-05 05:36 UTC), and Flea entered the fast ring the same day, adding 89 stars in one day. 4.5's release notes don't mention Flea and don't change the default file manager. So the peak is more likely from new users and returning traffic from 4.5, plus the 0.4.0 post. There's no way to split out how much each contributed.
- Setup > Defaults PRs (in progress): The omarchy main repo has two PRs, #10542 and #16741, that add a "file manager" option to Setup > Defaults, with Flea among the candidates. Neither has been merged yet.
- No HN coverage, paid acquisition, or major media features about Flea turned up. It's FOSS and Linuxiac wrote about Strata.
4. Why this one
- Timing and a platform event: Omarchy has a big, sticky user base (DHH's community), and Nautilus has long been criticized for "not fitting this desktop" (omarchy issue #2587, discussion #11321). DHH publicly offered a September bounty for a "new default," which means the platform side announced it would swap out a system-level component, so every candidate got attention.
- Distribution lock-in: On day one it entered the official package repo, installs with one command and becomes the default, takes over Super+Shift+F and the Open/Save dialog, and auto-updates with
omarchy update. By contrast, omanta and omafiles aren't in the official repo, and their authors got YouTube traffic but no stars. - The product feels native to the system: It follows Omarchy's theme and transparency, puts a "shelf" in the Omarchy top bar, supports Omarchy text size, and can serve as the system file-picker dialog. The feature set is full too: four view modes, Quick Look, SMB/SFTP/WebDAV/Taildrop, ISO writing, iPhone AFC.
- "Fastest" is a claim you can verify: The README includes a test table for 7 file managers (100k files: Flea 0.75 s steady, Nautilus 20.33 s, Strata 1.80 s), with the method and raw data attached. DHH cares a lot about performance, and the 4.5 release notes have a whole section on millisecond speedups, so this claim speaks directly to him and the community.
- Iteration speed: 23 releases in two months, and at 0.2.0 the author openly said "people who quit in the first week, try again." In a contest of "who does it best," shipping often is itself a signal.
5. Differentiation, and whether that's why it took off
Compared with Strata (GTK4), Flea chose Quickshell/QML for its frontend. Omarchy's own desktop shell is also Quickshell (you can see quickshell in the official repo in the 4.5 issue), so Flea can do system-level integration like the top-bar shelf and theme transparency, and it clearly leads in the performance tests. Against Nautilus and Dolphin, its edge is "native feel" and speed. But differentiation alone doesn't get you off the ground: omanta is also Qt Quick, also claims to be native, also built specifically for Omarchy, and has only 53 stars. What really separated them was "official repo adoption + DHH naming it + volunteer backing." Differentiation (speed, deep system integration) is why it stayed in the final round, not why it got its initial traction.
6. Visibility and copycats
- Visibility: it's spreading in a small circle. It's well known in the Omarchy community (DHH's tweets, r/omarchy, Omarchy Central), but it hasn't hit GitHub trending (trending_days_any=0), HN, or outside Linux media, which wrote about Strata instead. It's an open-source project, so no revenue is involved.
- Copying: a Brave search turns up a dozen-plus forks (TheNeovimmer, swaits, nixfred, etc.), all keeping the original description, which doesn't count as copying. Strata, omanta and omafiles in the same niche entered the contest at the same time; they aren't copying it.
7. What to borrow
- Bet on the system component the platform wants to replace: When a platform (distro, editor, browser) publicly says it will replace a default component, build a candidate right away, get it into official channels, and have the platform lead or volunteers amplify it.
- Turn "fastest" into a public test table with method and raw data, comparing directly against the system default and the strongest rival.
- Bind deeply to the host platform's UI stack (theme, top bar, system dialogs) so it feels like it "should have been part of the system all along."
- Ship densely: post on X for each major version, post in community subreddits, and @ the platform side.
8. Still unclear
- The day-by-day star curve for September isn't available (the stargazer timestamp endpoint returns empty), so how many stars DHH's tweet actually brought can't be quantified.
- Within the 11-05 peak, the split between the 4.5 release, the 0.4.0 Reddit post and the fast ring can't be separated.
- Who becomes the new default is still undecided: 4.5 hasn't been replaced, and DHH said "4.5 or the next version"; the Defaults-related PRs haven't been merged.
- ryanrhughes's identity (Omarchy core maintainer) is inferred from his commit volume in the official package repo, not verified commit by commit.
