# 380 stars, 24k downloads: an open-source CorelDRAW clone, blown up by a Brazilian Corel tutorial channel

**What it is** A free, open-source CorelDRAW clone written with Claude Code. The interface matches Corel's, it reads and writes .cdr, and it runs on desktop and in the browser.

**Why it took off** In the wave of AI clones of commercial software, nobody had touched CorelDRAW, so it filled that gap. A Brazilian Corel tutorial channel covered it as "free Corel" in two back-to-back videos, and the hundreds of thousands of views sent Brazilian and Latin American designers to download it.

**B** **How you could copy it** Don't build another Corel clone. Pick a regionally strong, paid legacy app that nobody has cloned yet, get its file read/write working first, then find the app's tutorial YouTubers to promote it.

Grade B: picking an empty slot, getting the proprietary format working, and finding tutorial channels is a clear playbook you can follow. But the users are designers, and hundreds of thousands of views only turned into under 400 stars, a weak return if you want stars. CorelDRAW's slot is also already taken, and there's legal risk. TraceDraw is an open-source CorelDRAW clone written in Rust. The interface copies Corel's, and it can open .cdr files and save them back. It has fewer than 400 stars on GitHub, but its installers have been downloaded about 24k times. The people downloading it aren't developers. They're designers in Brazil and Latin America who make signage and print shop work, and they learned about it from Corel tutorial channels on Portuguese-language YouTube. This piece covers how it picked an unclaimed spot in the AI clone wave, where its users come from, and how to choose and promote an open-source project like this if you want to build one.

### "Saiu o clone do CorelDRAW"

In Oct 2026 21, Brazilian Corel tutorial channel Corel Snake posted a 20-minute video titled "Saiu o Clone do CorelDRAW: Grátis e Abre Arquivos CDR" (The CorelDRAW clone is out: free, and it opens CDR files). The first line of the description says the interface looks exactly like Corel's, it runs right in the browser, it opens CDR up to version 2026, and it saves to X4 through 2026 versions.

The chapter structure of the video says a lot: it opens with "install notes" and "checking the code with AI," spends over ten minutes trying the tool, opening a CDR and saving a CDR, and ends with a section called "why I didn't install it." He demoed everything in the browser version. By Nov 6, the video had 46,804 views and 247 comments (YouTube, 11-06).

The most-liked comment said: "At this rate I'll be off Windows soon." Another: "I've been tied to Windows by Corel and Adobe for twenty years." Someone else said they started using Corel version 1 1989 years ago, "back when installing meant a stack of floppy disks."

Two days later, TraceDraw gained 61 stars in a single day, its biggest single-day gain so far (GitHub daily data).

### What it is and who made it

TraceDraw's repo was created in Oct 8. The author is Ighor Toth (igtoth on GitHub), based in Europe, formerly at IBM. The code was mostly written by Claude Code. Among the contributors, the `claude` account has 254 commits, and the issue replies are all signed "Generated by Claude Code."

It covers what CorelDRAW does: a property bar, a toolbox with flyout menus, docked panels, color palettes, and even runs VBA macros. The key part is files: **it reads .cdr from versions 1 through 27 and writes versions 7 through 27** , and it also reads CMX, AI, EPS and PSD. There are installers for Windows, macOS and Linux, a browser version, a listing on the Microsoft Store, and the interface is available in 18 languages, including Brazilian Portuguese.

Over 29 days it shipped 58 releases, from v0.3 to v0.41. In Oct 15 someone opened an issue: "Create a file in Corel 17, open it in TraceDraw, change a color, save as Corel 17, then open it in Corel and it errors," with a sample file attached. A fix landed the same day. The README simply says: send the .cdr files you can't open as issues. Users' files became the bug-fixing test set, and the issue numbers have now passed #1485.

### Who it's riding on

The README tagline is "an open-source, clean-room vector editor written from scratch in pure Rust." This phrasing isn't TraceDraw's invention. Starting in Sep 30, ArtCraft released a whole series of "AI-written, pure Rust clones of commercial software," including PhotoCraft (aimed at Photoshop, now 77k stars), WordCraft, and VectorCraft (aimed at Illustrator). The peak of stars came between Oct 10 and 13. Afterward dozens of repos with the same phrasing appeared on GitHub.

TraceDraw is one of the followers, but it picked a different spot. Everyone in this wave cloned Adobe and Microsoft products, and **nobody had touched CorelDRAW** . Corel Snake's channel already had an ArtCraft "free design software" playlist, and comments included people saying "I was waiting for CraftDraw." In other words, the Portuguese-speaking Corel crowd had already been introduced to ArtCraft and was waiting for someone to build a Corel version.

### Where the users came from

| Timeline | What happened | Results |
|---|---|---|
| About 10-14 to 10-17 | The author posted to r/software, r/foss, r/sideprojects and r/FuckAdobe under the same title: "I'm building an open-source vector editor that opens .cdr files" | Early stars, roughly 30 |
| 10-21 to 10-22 | First wave from Portuguese Corel channels: Corel Snake (46,804 views), NenoDesignBR "The new rival to CorelDRAW?" (7,860), Corel na Veia "Goodbye CorelDRAW?" (7,308), and others | 10-23 stars, +61 in one day |
| Around 10-22 | r/ProgramadoresBrasil: "The CorelDRAW clone is out" | Brazilian developers who use GitHub starred it |
| 10-28 to 11-01 | Spanish-language channels followed: Manuel Cabrera Caballero "Why is everyone talking about TraceDraw?" (9,426), TECNO TRUCOS (2,078) | Expansion across Latin American Spanish-speaking regions |
| 11-03 to 11-04 | Second wave: Corel Snake "This free program does what CorelDRAW never did" (34,664), "TraceDraw vs CorelDRAW: 10 features" (8,586), plus install tutorials | v0.39, v0.40: about 2,200 downloads per release |

(Views: YouTube, 11-06; downloads: GitHub Releases, 11-06)

The Portuguese and Spanish videos together have over 140k views. The English tech world barely knows about it: there's no Hacker News post, no mentions on X, and it never reached GitHub Trending (it hadn't even been up 60 days, so it couldn't qualify). I didn't see any paid ads.

This explains why stars and downloads are so far apart. The people watching the videos are designers. They download the installer and don't go to GitHub to star it. The 24k downloads include duplicate counts from auto-updates, so the real install base is smaller (my inference).

### Why the tutorial channels keep making videos

The opening of Corel Snake's second video: "CorelDRAW has been around for 37 years and still lacks a feature, and TraceDraw, this free open-source program, already has it." It covers rounding corners directly on nodes with the shape tool. Both videos link to the design course he sells on Hotmart.

For these channels, "free alternative to Corel" is a good topic: the audience cares, the titles write themselves ("Grátis," "Adeus CorelDRAW"), and every new TraceDraw release gives them something new to cover. TraceDraw shipping a version a day matches their publishing cadence.

The demand is real too. A CorelDRAW subscription starts around $249 a year. It's widely used in Brazil's signage, print, engraving and screen printing trades, and piracy is common. Since October, GitHub has seen batches of bait repos advertising "CorelDRAW cracked" versions, which shows plenty of people are searching for "free Corel."

### Who it's competing with

| Competitors | How TraceDraw differs |
|---|---|
| CorelDRAW itself | Paid subscription; TraceDraw is free, cross-platform, with the same interface |
| Inkscape | The most mainstream open-source vector editor. It can import .cdr but can't save back to it, and its UI logic is different |
| VectorCraft(ArtCraft) | Same AI clone wave, but targets Illustrator and .ai, not CDR |
| Photopea / Vectorpea | Can open CDR in the browser, but isn't a Corel-style workspace |
| sK1 | The only serious open-source CDR editor before this. It's no longer updated, 335 stars |
| Penpot, Graphite | Built for UI design or node-based design, with little connection to the print signage trade |

Before TraceDraw, there was no open-source software that could save back to .cdr and also matched Corel's interface. For now I haven't seen a second CorelDRAW clone, only a few mirrors and forks with changed descriptions (for example, a Brazilian user's fork that reads "Um CorelDRAW genérico").

There's criticism too. On r/opensource, a post asked "AI reverse-engineered software dares call itself clean-room?" It named the project a CorelDRAW ripoff, and the same thread criticized PhotoCraft. Whether Corel will send a cease-and-desist is unknown; the README has already added a disclaimer.

### If it were you

**Verdict** : B. The playbook is clear and worth learning: pick a regionally strong, paid legacy app that nobody has cloned, get its proprietary file format reading and writing, then find the app's tutorial YouTubers. The weak spot is also clear: this playbook brings downloads, not stars. TraceDraw brought hundreds of thousands of views and turned them into under 400 stars. If you want GitHub fame, this path pays less than building a developer tool. CorelDRAW's slot is also already taken.

**Who it suits** : developers who have used an expensive app in some industry and know which features and file types the long-time users can't live without; people who can fix bugs daily with AI and aren't scared of being buried in issues; people who speak a language with an active tutorial scene (Portuguese, Spanish or Indonesian are good examples).

**Who it doesn't suit** : people who want a nice star curve (the users are designers and don't star repos); people who want to build a second open-source CorelDRAW (TraceDraw already holds the spot and is shipping a version a day); people who can't or won't reverse-engineer proprietary formats, or who are worried about legal risk.

**How to do it** : when picking software, check three things: the subscription is expensive or piracy is common; it's standard in a particular country or trade; and nobody in the AI clone wave has built it yet (commenters are already asking for a Freehand clone and a Windows version of Procreate). Get file reading and writing working in the first version, so you can open and save back, which makes the strongest demo moment. Build a browser version so people can try it without installing, and list on the Microsoft Store to ease the "free programs are all viruses" worry. The README line "send me the files you can't open" turns users' files into your test set.

**How to get users:** Reddit and open-source communities only get you the first few dozen stars. The real volume is in tutorial channels for this kind of software. Find channels that have covered "free alternatives" like ArtCraft, email them with a browser-version link and one small feature the original can't do, since that's the angle they want. For every release after that, give them a new selling point so they keep making a second and third video.

**Deadline:** The "AI clones commercial software" theme peaked in October. The window to ride this wave runs to about Q1 of 2027. The easy-to-clone software targets will get taken one by one.

**What we got wrong:** ① TraceDraw pushed past 2,000 stars in the following month, so this approach does draw developer attention and is worth upgrading. ② Corel sent a DMCA or trademark notice, the repo got taken down, so cloning proprietary-format software carries more legal risk than it looks. ③ After the Portuguese channels stopped posting, downloads per release fell back to a few hundred, meaning users came to watch the show and didn't stick around.

## Why TraceDraw (tracedraw/tracedraw) took off

> Research date 2026-11-06. Data sources: our GitHub database (repo_profile / repo_day), GitHub API (queried through the office notebook's egress), YouTube Data API, Brave / Jina / Exa search. Pages we didn't open are marked "unverified."

### One line

TraceDraw is an **open-source clone of CorelDRAW** : a vector drawing, layout and prepress editor written in Rust, with a UI copied from CorelDRAW. It **reads .cdr (versions 1–27) and writes .cdr (7–27)** , runs on Windows, macOS, Linux and the browser, and is also on the Microsoft Store. The author is Ighor Toth (igtoth, ex-IBM, based in Europe), and most of the code was written with Claude Code: the `claude` account has 254 commits among the contributors, and issue replies are signed "Generated by Claude Code." In 29 days it shipped 58 releases (v0.3 → v0.41), with issue numbers already past #1485.

**Bottom line:** It's a follower of the 2026 October wave of "AI-written clean-room pure-Rust commercial software clones," but it picked **the CorelDRAW niche nobody else had claimed** , and bet the whole project on .cdr read/write. CorelDRAW is heavily used in signage, advertising and quick-print shops across Brazil and Latin America, and piracy is widespread, so **Brazilian Portuguese CorelDRAW tutorial YouTubers** spread it as a "free Corel clone." Stars are only around 380, but GitHub Release downloads have already reached roughly 24k. The real users are designers, not GitHub developers.

### 1. Data

- Stars: repo created 2026-10-08; 10-17 had 30,10-22, 79, **10-23 gained +61 in one day** (the single-day high across the whole period), 10-27 had 219,11-06, 366 (our GitHub repo_day). The GitHub API live today (11-06) shows 387 stars, 51 forks, 232 open issues. Last 7 days +116, the prior 7 days +110: growth is steady and slightly accelerating.

- Downloads (GitHub API releases, all assets summed): **about 24,289** , with Windows accounting for over 60%. Downloads per release rose noticeably starting around 10-20: v0.10.0 about 750, v0.11.0 about 1,000; **11-04's v0.39.0 and 11-05's v0.40.0 each about 2,200** , matching the second wave of Corel Snake videos on 11-03 and 11-04. Note: the app has auto-update, so a single user may be counted more than once.

- Also listed on the Microsoft Store (9P50L12VHF33); ratings and download counts not retrieved (unverified).

- Not on GitHub trending (repo under 60 days old; trending doesn't index repos that young). No TraceDraw posts on HN (Algolia query returned 0). No mentions on X in the x-radar database.

### 2. Competitors

| Competitors | Where | Launched | Scale | How TraceDraw differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CorelDRAW Graphics Suite / CorelDRAW Go / Web(Corel / Alludo) | Windows / Mac / web | 1989 to date | Long-standing industry player, subscription from about US$249/year | Free, open source, cross-platform; UI copied closely, zero learning curve for existing users |
| Inkscape | Open-source desktop | 2003 | The most mainstream open-source vector editor | Inkscape, via libcdr, **can only import .cdr, not write it back** , and its UI works differently. TraceDraw can write .cdr back across 7–27 versions. |
| Affinity(Canva) | Desktop | Free from ¥2025-10 (exact terms unverified) | Big | Free but closed source, doesn't read or write .cdr (unverified) |
| Vectorpea / Photopea | Web | 2010 era | Photopea has a large user base; photopea/CDR-specification has 73 stars | CDR can be opened in the browser (read/write scope unverified), but it's not a Corel-style workspace |
| storytold/vectorcraft (ArtCraft family) | Open source | 2026-09-30 | 11,397 star | Same wave of AI-written Rust clones, but targeting **Illustrator / .ai** , not touching CDR. TraceDraw fills the CorelDRAW slot. |
| GraphiteEditor/Graphite | Open source | 2020 | 27,843 star | Node-based, procedural design, not Corel's workflow, and doesn't read CDR |
| Penpot | Open source | 2015 | 62,109 star | Aimed at UI design and collaboration, unrelated to print or signage |
| sK1 / UniConvertor | Open source | 2015 | 335 stars, essentially unmaintained | The only serious open-source CDR editor until now, now discontinued |
| The "CorelDRAW crack" bait repos on GitHub | GitHub | Appearing in batches since 2026-10 | Each has a few dozen to a few hundred stars and 0 forks (our GitHub database) | These are malware bait, but they show strong search demand for "free CorelDRAW" |

Takeaway: **an open-source editor that can write .cdr back and looks like Corel did not exist before** . sK1 is discontinued and Inkscape only imports. That gap is its differentiator.

### 3. Growth: how users arrived (by time)

1. **Background: the early-October "clean-room pure-Rust clone" wave** : storytold (ArtCraft) opened PhotoCraft (77,165 stars, targeting Photoshop), PdfCraft (19,683), WordCraft (17,388, Word), VectorCraft (11,397, Illustrator), CADCraft, GridCraft and more starting 2026-09-30, with single-day star peaks clustered around 10-10 to 10-13 (our GitHub database). The wave spawned copycats using the same template line, "an open-source, clean-room … in pure Rust": BIMCraft, mailcraft, paint.rs, notecraft and others. TraceDraw was created on 10-08, and its README tagline is nearly word for word ("an open-source, clean-room vector editor written from scratch in pure Rust"), clearly riding the trend. An r/opensource thread, "So are we all okay with AI reverse engineered apps calling themselves clean-room," names TraceDraw directly as a CorelDRAW ripoff and also criticizes PhotoCraft (Brave search snippet).

2. **Author posting on Reddit (about 10-14 to 10-17)** : same title, "I'm building an open-source vector editor that opens .cdr files," posted to r/software, r/foss, r/sideprojects and r/FuckAdobe (Jina search results). This step brought the first ~30 stars.

3. **Brazilian Portuguese CorelDRAW YouTubers (starting 10-21, main engine)** (view counts from the YouTube Data API):
    - Corel Snake, "Saiu o Clone do CorelDRAW: Grátis e Abre Arquivos CDR," posted 10-21, **46,804 views** ; the description links the creator's own Hotmart course
    - Corel na Veia, "ADEUS CORELDRAW?", 10-22,7,308; NenoDesignBR, "O NOVO CONCORRENTE DO CorelDRAW?", 10-22,7,860; channel "AutoCAD," "CLONE DO COREL DRAW?", 10-22,3,609
    - Second wave: Corel Snake, "O programa GRÁTIS que fez o que o CorelDRAW nunca fez," 11-03, **34,584** ; "TraceDraw vs CorelDRAW: 10 Recursos," 11-04,8,586; Corel na Veia also made an installation and tracing series (6,135 / 1,150); Hudson Tutoriais 11-04,2,843
    - Expansion into Spanish: Manuel Cabrera Caballero, "¿Por qué todos están hablando de TraceDraw?", 11-01,9,426; TECNO TRUCOS, 10-28,2,078
    - Combined **over 140k views** , nearly all Portuguese or Spanish. The single-day star peak (10-23 +61) came 1 to 2 days after the first batch of videos; the download peak (about 11-04 per release for 11-05 and 2,200) followed closely behind the second wave.

4. **Brazilian dev community** : r/ProgramadoresBrasil "Saiu o clone do CorelDRAW: TraceDraw é grátis…" (around 10-22); Diolinux Plus forum "TraceDraw: Mais um \"clone\" do CorelDraw?" (11-04). Stars mostly came from this group, who use GitHub; downloads came from designers YouTube sent over.

5. **Directory sites and mirrors** : remade.wiki, clonesof.com (a directory that catalogs "clones of [software]"), and trendshift all list it; vibeclones/tracedraw hosts a browser version; a few Brazilian users forked it and rewrote the description, e.g. "Um CorelDRAW genérico" (kunghel).

6. **Microsoft Store listing** : a signed, auto-updating official install channel that eases Windows users' fear that "free Corel" is malware. The Corel Snake video has a whole section on "what to watch out for before installing" and "checking the code with AI."

7. No evidence found of paid acquisition, HN, big X accounts, or press coverage.

### 4. Why it took off

- **Found a suppressed need** : CorelDRAW is widely used in Brazil and Latin America by sign shops, print shops, engravers, and screen printers, but subscriptions are expensive and piracy is rampant. "Free, opens my .cdr, looks just like Corel" hits that group squarely. Evidence: batches of "CorelDRAW crack" bait repos on GitHub, and YouTube titles shouting "Grátis" and "Adeus CorelDRAW" ("Goodbye CorelDRAW").

- **.cdr read/write is both the gate and the hook** : the core YouTuber demo is "open a CDR, save it back as X4 for 2026." Issue #98 has a user reporting "the saved file won't open in Corel 17"; the author fixed it and shipped the same day. The project treats "send us the .cdr that won't open" as its core loop (README, issue #1238), and users' sample files feed AI bug fixes.

- **AI-powered release speed** : 58 releases in 29 days, with most issues fixed and shipped the same day. Each YouTuber revisit can point to something new, and the second wave of videos was about "10 features Corel doesn't have."

- **No install needed** : the browser version (WebAssembly) lets YouTubers say "just click and use it," lowering the barrier to first try. It supports 18 interface languages, including Brazilian Portuguese.

- **YouTubers have a stake** : Corel tutorial channels get views from "Corel news / alternatives" topics and drive traffic to their own courses (the Corel Snake bio links a Hotmart course), so they make content on this topic proactively and repeatedly.

### 5. Differentiation, and whether that's why it took off

Differentiation comes on two levels: (1) **a workspace modeled on CorelDRAW** : property bar, toolbox with flyout menus, docked panels, palettes, and even VBA macros and .gms files run; (2) **independently implemented .cdr read/write (1–27 / 7–27)** , plus CMX, AI, EPS, PSD, and more. Compared with VectorCraft from the same wave (aimed at Illustrator), it's betting on the CorelDRAW ecosystem; compared with Inkscape, it can write back to .cdr. **This is why it took off** : nearly all users come from the "CorelDRAW user community," not the Rust or open-source crowd. HN and X had no traction, while the Portuguese Corel channels drove hundreds of thousands of views.

### 6. Visibility and copycats

- Visibility: **spreading in small circles** . The Brazilian and Latin American designer YouTube scene is very active (single videos up to 47k views, 140k+ combined), while the English tech world barely knows about it: not on HN or X, and under 400 stars. No revenue, no charge.

- Copycats: no independent CorelDRAW clone found yet; there are a few forks and hosted mirrors (vibeclones/tracedraw, kunghel/tracedraw, etc.). The bigger "copy" is the whole model: the same wave already has dozens of "clean-room X in pure Rust" repos.

### 7. What others can learn

- In the AI clone wave, **pick a regional, long-established commercial product that big vendors ignore and open source hasn't claimed** (CorelDRAW in Brazil; similar cases include WPS and niche CAD formats), get its proprietary file format read/write working, and give long-time users a reason to migrate.

- Growth doesn't come from developer communities; instead, **find the tutorial YouTubers for that software** . They need "free alternative" topics and will create content on their own, repeatedly.

- Turn "send us the file that won't open" into a feedback loop, paired with AI fixes and same-day releases, so every user becomes a source of test samples.

- Listing on the Microsoft Store addresses the trust problem of "free software = virus."

### 8. Still unclear

- Retention: no active-user data. Download counts include auto-updates, so real installs are unknown.

- Microsoft Store ratings and download counts were not retrieved.

- Legal risk: whether Corel will issue a DMCA or trademark notice (the README already has a disclaimer); someone on r/opensource questioned the "clean-room" claim.

- The Reddit post bodies and engagement data were blocked by 403; only search snippets were available. The author's exact posting date is unverified.

- Whether the author igtoth has any connection to storytold / ArtCraft is unverified (the wording is very similar, but no storytold contributor shows up among the contributors).
