# 8,000 TV health reports, 1,665 stars: how the Clean Your TV mobile app caught the people who wanted to "de-ad their parents' TV"

**What it is** An open-source Android phone app: phone and TV on the same Wi-Fi, three taps to turn off ads and preinstalls on Android TV / Google TV / Fire TV and swap in a clean home screen. No computer needed, and every change can be undone.

**Why it took off** The parent project, CleanYourTV, blew up 10-17 ago, but its barrier was a computer plus a coding agent. The author is a colleague of the original author at 0G Labs. It launched on day 4, took the name "Clean Your TV app", the official site page, and the top recommendation in the README, and ordinary people stuck at the barrier were funneled over.

**C** **How you could follow** Don't build another TV ad-removal app. Within a week of the next AI-agent hit, build its "no computer, no command line" version that only cuts the barrier, go ask the original author for the README recommendation slot right away, and turn feedback into one-click pre-filled issues. Or do the same thing in Chinese, for domestic TVs and operator set-top boxes.

C grade: this TV wave has already peaked at 10-22, the phone version already has three competitors, and it relies on the official name and top README placement that latecomers can't get. The playbook of "viral agent hit, then a no-barrier version" is worth learning, but following with another TV app isn't worth it. The word in small circles

"Use Claude Code to remove ads from your TV" blew up on X in mid-October. The lead repo gained over 50k stars in 16 days. But most people who saw it were ordinary folks who wanted to clean ads off their own or their parents' TVs, and they had no computer and certainly no coding agent. cleanyourtv-app is built for them: a phone app, three taps on Android, done in five minutes. It got 1,665 stars in 16 days (GitHub, 11-06). That number isn't large. What matters is that the repo has 8,100 more issues, nearly all of them TV health reports auto-generated by the app. Below: what it is, where people came from, who is competing, and whether you should still follow it.

### A Russian set-top box

Nov 6, 2:20 PM (UTC): someone opened issue #8224 in this repo, titled "TV support: Dom-ru_MOVIX Movix Pro". Movix is an Android set-top box that the Russian carrier Dom.ru gives its customers. The issue body was not written by a person. It was a report the app generated after reading the TV: Android 9, stock launcher is the carrier's own `com.ertelecom.domrutvstb`, 93 system apps, "Changing launcher: blocked, reason unknown". The app version submitted was `0.4.8-ru-mod-beta2`, and judging by the name, someone had modified it into a Russian-language build.

The same day's list also had a ZTE box, Haier, Sharp, Philips, TCL, an Amazon Fire TV, and a TV labeled "JVC 4K ISDB" (ISDB is the broadcast standard used in Brazil and South America). The submitters' usernames suggested burner accounts registered just for this one report. These people will not star the repo, but six or seven hundred of them use it every day, and they hand over their TV's details along the way.

### What it is

- An open-source Android phone app (Kotlin, MIT). The phone and the TV share a Wi-Fi network. The app connects to the TV over wireless debugging, turns off ads, tracking and manufacturer preinstalls, and swaps in a clean launcher.

- Only works on TVs and boxes that run Android: Android TV, Google TV, Fire TV. Samsung, LG and Roku are not supported, and the site says so plainly.

- Three steps: connect (accept the "Always allow" popup on the TV) → analyze ("We found 22 things that can be turned off", showing you the plan first, changing nothing) → clean (saves a restore point on the phone first).

- Apps are disabled, not uninstalled. Each change can be undone individually or all at once. The TV side runs a watchdog that switches back to the original launcher if the phone doesn't confirm within 150 seconds.

- It uses the TV list and launcher from the parent project CleanYourTV. It's named "Clean Your TV app", package `tv.cleanyour.app`, and the original author agreed to this.

The GitHub account of author udhaykumarbala has only this one repo.

### Why now: the parent project left the bar high

10 月 17 日,0G Labs 的 Gathin 在 X 上发帖说「今天下午 vibe code 了我爸妈的电视」:用 Claude Code 给一台小米电视去广告,换成 Apple TV 风格的桌面。当天他建了 Gathin23/cleanyourtv。TechCrunch 10-19 写了《People are using AI to make their smart TVs dumb again》,PCWorld 唱反调写《Please don't use AI hacks to debloat your TV》,Hacker News 上好几个帖子,Instagram、YouTube 的搬运号跟着做「评论 TV 我发你教程」。母项目的星:10-19 1,259 → 10-21 10,248 → 10-28 42,550 → 11-06 52,550。

The buzz came from "a TV for my parents", but the setup was built for developers: a computer, Python, JDK and the Android SDK installed, plus a coding agent or manual ADB commands. Most people who watched the video and wanted to try it got stuck at that step.

This app's repo was created in Oct 21, the day the parent project was 4 days old, during the week its stars climbed fastest (four to seven thousand a day).

### Where users come from

**The main channel is the parent project itself.** The parent README has a routing table. The first row reads "Have a phone or laptop, no coding agent → community app", and this app is first in the FAQ. On the official site cleanyour.tv/app, it is also listed first and has its own page, cleanyour.tv/app/android, headed "No laptop. No coding agent." The other community apps have no dedicated page. The parent project, with 50k+ stars, sent people who were stuck at the entry barrier straight to it.

**There's a reason for this treatment.** The author's LinkedIn lists "DevRel @ 0G", and his X handle carries (Ø,G). Gathin also works at 0G Labs. In Oct 27 the author posted 0.4.0 on X, claiming "50,000+ downloads and 400+ TV models" (self-reported, not verified), and Gathin replied underneath, "Awesome! 🔥". Put simply, colleagues handed it off: the name, the package ID, the dedicated site page, and the first slot in the README are things an outsider could not easily get at the same time.

**The rest was secondary spread.** The release post was shared by Portuguese, Spanish and Chinese accounts. Instagram posts saying "comment and I'll send you the guide" described it as "a community-built Clean Your TV Android app, done in five minutes". YouTube had tutorials like "Remove Android TV Ads (No PC, No Claude Code)". On Reddit r/AfterVanced, someone posted "Debloat Android TV from your phone, no PC, no Claude Code". The APK is on GitHub, the F-Droid main repo, IzzyOnDroid and Obtainium, and third-party sites like appteka are passing it around. The author says the Google Play version is "coming soon". I found no paid promotion. The app is free, with no ads and no in-app purchases.

### Stars are falling. Users are not.

| Date | stars | New issues that day |
|---|---|---|
| 10-23 | Under 45 | 66 |
| 10-25 | 236 | 419 |
| 10-26 | 515 (+279 in a single day, at peak) | |
| 10-28 | 938 | |
| 10-29 | 1,020 | 628 |
| 10-31 | 1,168 | 875 |
| 11-02 | 1,351 | 719 |
| 11-05 | 1,602 | 698 |
| 11-06 | 1,665(+63) | |

Star counts come from GitHub's daily data. Issue counts come from GitHub search, 11-06.

Daily new stars have dropped from 279 to sixty or seventy, but new issues per day have held steady at six to nine hundred. Of the 8,100+ issues, about 6,500 are "TV support" (new device reports), 800+ are "Problem", and nearly 500 are "Confirmation" (users confirming the cleanup worked). For comparison, the parent project with 50k stars has 530 issues total, and the similar Tellyscope has 50. This app's issue count is about 5 times its star count, which suggests most of its users are ordinary people who don't star repos.

### The three things it got right

**It removes the fear of breaking things.** When you're changing a parent's TV, the worry isn't effort, it's breaking something you can't explain. The app shows the plan before acting, saves a restore point first, only disables rather than uninstalls, and has a watchdog that rolls back automatically. Each of these answers that worry. The site copy is plain throughout: "All your apps stay: Netflix, YouTube, live TV, HDMI".

**User feedback is a single button.** The app has "Help adapt this TV" and "Report a problem" buttons. Tapping one pre-fills a GitHub issue with the TV's details, with private data removed. Users don't need to write a bug report, and the author gets structured device data.

**Releases follow the issues.** In 16 days it shipped v0.4.8 and 0.5.0-beta1. Each release note lists the issues it fixes (#2743, #5539, and so on). It now supports 47 brands and 173 TV lists. More reports and more compatible models mean better reviews, and someone has already built a Russian-language version.

### Who's competing

| Project | Repo created | Scale (11-06) | How it differs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gathin23/cleanyourtv (parent project) | 10-17 | 52,550 stars | Needs a computer plus a coding agent. This app uses its list and only removes the entry barrier. |
| man15h/Tellyscope | About 10-24 | 1,539 stars, 50 issues | Also a mobile app, also recommended by its parent project, and climbing faster than it over the past 7 days; no reports coming back |
| jolan94/TidyTV | About 10-22 | 94 stars | The only one already on Google Play. Doubles as a remote and file transfer tool. |
| wingedpanther/CleanMyTV | 10-20 | 340 stars | Mac/Windows desktop app. Still needs a computer. |
| simbasjungles/free-my-tv | 10-19 | 5,917 stars | A separate track covering LG webOS and Samsung Tizen. |
| TV Debloater, cLeanBot | Not verified | Not verified | Phone-based ADB ad-removal tools on the Play Store, with no community test list and no official endorsement. |

Also a dozen or so desktop and ad-removal repos that appeared between 10-18 and 10-26, with one to a few hundred stars each. The parent project even posted a notice that cleanyourtv.com and clean-your-tv.net are not official, after people had already built sites using its name.

Feature-wise these are nearly identical. All use the parent's list, and all can be undone. This app wins on two things. The first, and the main one, is the official name and top recommendation. The second is report feedback and release speed, which decide whether users stick around.

### If it were you

**C: copy its playbook, but don't build another TV debloat app.** This wave peaked around 10-22. There are already three phone versions: this one, Tellyscope and TidyTV. This app's official name, dedicated site page and first line in the README are things a latecomer can't get. Building another one now would split the stars and users very thinly.

**Who it fits** : developers who watch GitHub and X closely, move fast, and can turn a "developers-only" hit into an app or web page ordinary people can use within a few days. Also those who know the author of a hit project, or are willing to ask for permission.

**Who it doesn't fit** : people who want a slice of the TV wave without any direct link to the original project, or who would rather build something and wait for it to be discovered than ask the original author for a recommendation.

**How to do it** : when the next "use an AI agent to modify something" project takes off, ask on day one: how many of the people watching are blocked by "needs a computer, an agent, the command line"? If it's many, build the no-barrier version. Only remove the barrier, don't add features. Use the parent's list and rules directly, and credit it. Copy the safety design: show the plan first, create a restore point, only disable, roll back automatically. Turn feedback into a one-tap pre-filled issue inside the app. Changing the audience is also a path. Its reports include many usernames from Russian-speaking regions, India and Latin America, and someone has already built a Russian version. The same idea done in Chinese, aimed at domestic TVs and carrier boxes, would face far fewer competitors.

**How to get users** : the main channel is the original author. Once the app is ready, open a PR on the parent project to add your link to the README routing table, tag the original author on X, and ask him to reply. If you can get permission to use the name or package ID, even better. Then give repost accounts and tutorial makers something to film: a 30-second screen recording of "no computer needed".

**When to act: before** the parent project's peak, within a week of its surge. This app's repo was created on day 4, during the days the parent gained four to seven thousand stars daily. Tellyscope came 3 days later. It matched the stars, but its user reports were two orders of magnitude fewer.

**What would mean the call was wrong** : ① if the app passes 500k installs on Google Play within a month, the no-barrier version is more than a hype wave. It's a tool business that can last, and the grade should go up. ② If Tellyscope or another phone version without official backing reaches hundreds of user reports a day, then official recommendation matters less than I thought, and latecomers can follow, so the grade should go to B. ③ If new issues per day fall below 100 before the end of November, the wave is receding among ordinary users too, and the value of copying the playbook drops.

## udhaykumarbala/cleanyourtv-app: why it took off

**In one line** : the phone version of CleanYourTV, a breakout open-source project with 52,550 stars. It cuts the original's "computer + ADB or Claude Code" requirement down to "tap three times on an Android phone." It didn't take off on its own. The original author's colleague got official permission and the top recommendation on the official site, and caught the non-technical users spilling over from the parent project.

### 1. Background: the parent project's surge (from 2026-10-17)

- On 2026-10-17, Gathin (@gathint, 0G Labs) posted on X: used Claude Code to strip ads from his parents' Xiaomi TV and swap in an Apple TV-style home screen ("Vibe coded my parents' TV this afternoon", [x.com/gathint/status/2111379569030939102](https://x.com/gathint/status/2111379569030939102)). The same day he created the repo Gathin23/cleanyourtv.

- TechCrunch 10-19 covered "People are using AI to make their smart TVs dumb again" (https://techcrunch.com/2026/10/19/people-are-using-ai-to-make-their-smart-tvs-dumb-again/); PCWorld pushed back with "Please don't use AI hacks to debloat your TV"; LinkedIn, Instagram "comment TV and I'll send you the link" repost accounts, and a wave of YouTube tutorials followed; multiple HN threads (item 50239424, 50171041).

- Parent project stars (our GitHub repo_day data): 10-19 1,259 → 10-21 10,248 → 10-28 42,550 → 11-06 52,550, forks 6,705.

- The parent project's barrier: a computer + Python3 + JDK + Android SDK + a coding agent (or typing ADB commands by hand). Most of the people who went viral ("debloat my parents' TV") have none of these. That's the gap this app fills.

### 2. This app's numbers

- Repo created 2026-10-21 12:42 (day 4 of the parent project's surge). Stars (GitHub repo): 10-24 45 → 10-25 236 → 10-26 515 (single-day +279 peak) → 10-28 938 → 11-06 1,665; forks 147. Over the last 7 days, +572; daily gains have fallen to 60–100.

- **The real usage signal is in the issues, not the stars** : the GitHub search API (2026-11-06) shows 8,086 issues in total, of which 6,510 have "TV support" in the title, 826 have "Problem", and 494 carry the label confirmation. These are pre-filled reports generated by the in-app "Help add this TV / Report a problem" button, submitted mostly by throwaway non-developer accounts (usernames skew Russian, Indian, and Latin American). Daily new issues: 10-23 66 → 10-25 419 → 10-29 628 → 10-31 875 → 11-02 719 → 11-05 698. **Stars are cooling, but user reports still hold at 600–900 a day** . For comparison: the parent project has 530 issues in total, Tellyscope 50, TidyTV 10, CleanMyTV 42. The "4,853 open issues anomaly" flagged in the data card isn't inflated traffic. It's real device reports from users (issue count is nearly 5× the star count, which means the users are mostly ordinary people who never click star).

- The author self-reported, in 10-27 0.4.0, "50,000+ downloads and 400+ TV models" (https://x.com/udhaykumarbala/status/2114893466807533984, not independently verified; the GitHub API was rate-limited at the time, so release download counts weren't pulled).

- Iteration is very fast: 16 days from release to v0.4.8 / 0.5.0-beta1. Each release note cites issue numbers directly (#2743, #5539, etc.) to fix specific device problems. Support covers 173 TV entries across 47 brands.

- Distribution: GitHub APK, Obtainium, IzzyOnDroid, and the main F-Droid repo (f-droid.org/packages/tv.cleanyour.app). The author says the Google Play version is "coming soon"; third-party sites such as appteka.store are already redistributing the APK.

### 4. Where users came from (growth tactics)

1. **Official referral from the parent project (main channel, verified)** : the first row of the parent project's README routing table reads "A phone or laptop, no coding agent → community apps", and the FAQ lists this app first. On the official site's cleanyour.tv/app list it is the first entry, and it has its own page at cleanyour.tv/app/android, which no other community app gets. The package name tv.cleanyour and the "Clean Your TV" name are used with Gathin's permission. Of the parent project's 50k+ stars' worth of traffic, everyone without a computer or agent is routed here.

2. **The author and the original author are in the same 0G Labs circle (resources, verified)** : udhaykumarbala's LinkedIn lists "DevRel @ 0G", and his X handle includes (Ø,G); Gathin's X profile shows 0G Labs; the Claude Code link in the parent project's README carries a 0G Private Computer utm tag. The original author replied on X with "Awesome! 🔥". So this is a colleague handoff, and it got permission, a dedicated page, and placement before other independent developers did.

3. **X release-post + reposts** : the author posts on X for each release, and 0.4.0 posts get reshared by Portuguese, Spanish and Chinese accounts (x.com/10Oficialsouza, VillaverdeRCD, twstalker on BobbyMai_1983).

4. **Secondary spread on Instagram / YouTube / Facebook (confirmed to exist, reach not verified)** : Instagram "Comment TV and we'll send you the guide" style posts that say outright "A community-built Clean Your TV app for Android phones does it in about 5 minutes"; YouTube tutorials such as "Remove Android TV Ads (No PC, No Claude Code)"; Reddit r/AfterVanced and r/BuildWithClaude threads with "Debloat your Android TV from your phone - no laptop, no Claude Code".

5. **F-Droid / IzzyOnDroid / Obtainium** : distribution channels for open-source Android users, already listed.

6. No paid acquisition seen. The product has no ads and no in-app purchases, and there is no monetization.

### 5. Why this one (and not Tellyscope or TidyTV)

- **Timing** : the repo was created on day 4 of the parent project's surge, while its star curve was steepest (10-21 to 10-28, parent project gaining 4–7k a day), and it got the top recommendation then.

- **Official identity** : the name is literally "Clean Your TV app", the package name uses the official domain, and it has a page on the official site. To ordinary users it simply looks like the "official app".

- **Product aimed at non-technical users** : three steps (connect, analyze, clean), shows the plan before acting, saves a restore point first, only disables and never uninstalls, auto-rolls back on the TV with a 150-second watchdog, and falls back to a brand-level list. Copy is plain language written for "your parents".

- **Feedback loop** : the app has a one-tap button that generates a privacy-scrubbed device report and files it as a GitHub issue → the author (using an AI coding agent) fixes the model per issue → the new release note names the issue. 8,000+ reports is a device-data moat no competitor has, and it gives users a sense of participation.

### 6. Differentiation

For the parent project, it went from "computer + agent" to "just an Android phone", which is the whole reason it exists and why it took off. For similar phone apps, the features are nearly identical (all use the parent project's list, all reversible), and the differences are official permission, placement, and naming, plus the device-report feedback loop and release speed. What decided the outcome most was the traffic that came from official identity; product polish determines retention and reputation.

### 7. Visibility and copycats

- The parent project has been covered by TechCrunch, PCWorld, HN, and big LinkedIn accounts, so the category is already crowded. This app itself has seen no standalone media coverage, but it is named in Instagram and YouTube reposts, which puts it at the upper end of "being talked about in small circles".

- Copycats: Tellyscope and TidyTV (already on Play) and CleanMyTV are direct competitors; Google Play has TV Debloater, cLeanBot, and others; appteka is redistributing the APK; the parent project even states that cleanyourtv.com and clean-your-tv.net are not official, so people are squatting on the name to build sites.

- No revenue, and no plans to charge.

### 8. Takeaways

- When a viral open-source or agent project appears, ship a "no-barrier version" right away (no computer, no agent, no command line), and go after the original author's permission and the top link in the README. The traffic comes from the parent project.

- Turn user feedback into a one-tap pre-filled GitHub issue inside the app. That collects device-compatibility data cheaply and doubles as a growth metric.

- A "sense of safety" design for beginners: show the plan first, a restore point, and auto-rollback. That matters more than extra features for getting people to tap.

### 9. Uncertain

- "50,000+ downloads" is the author's self-report and was not verified against release download counts (GitHub API rate limit).
