"The Agent Can't Hear Sound": one sound-effects skill with 288 stars, driven by a Douyin video

What it is A sound-effects sourcing skill for Claude Code: it searches Freesound for real recordings, then picks and downloads them based on download count, rating count, recording description, and license.

Why it took off The author posted a video about it under an official Douyin trending topic, a Bilibili version of the same video added a second wave, and the organization's existing audience did the rest. Nearly all the stars came from video viewers.

CHow you could follow suit Fix what it got wrong: an English version, multiple free sound libraries, global install, and an open-source license. Launch with a before-and-after video on X, YouTube, and in Remotion circles.

Grade C: its stars come from the author's own Douyin/Bilibili followers and platform topics, which followers can't copy. The code can be written in a weekend, the differentiation is thin, and even in the English market the stars it could collect are limited. Being talked about in small circles

What it is

A Skill for Claude Code that helps a video-making agent find sound effects. The whole repo is one SKILL.md plus two scripts written only with the Python standard library. The agent first translates on-screen actions into English keywords ("card flies in" becomes whoosh, "switch toggles" becomes soft click), searches Freesound, then picks a few clips based on download count, rating count, uploader description, duration, and license, and downloads them.

What's actually valuable is the opening line of SKILL.md: "You can't hear these clips, so lean on what people who did hear them left behind." In other words, the agent can't hear sound, so it leans on what listeners have left behind. The rules that follow turn veterans' experience into judgments an agent can execute:

  • Rating count is more trustworthy than average score: ★4.4(380) says more than ★4.9(6).
  • The uploader's description is the closest thing to a preview: entries that say "built-in mic" or "made with my mouth" are rough recordings. Entries that list the recording gear (Zoom, Sound Devices) and the specific source ("cork from a red wine bottle") tell you what you'll get.
  • High download counts don't mean a good fit: a heavily downloaded "thud" might be a 3-second cinematic low-frequency rumble. Measure the tail length and where the energy sits with ffmpeg first.

The repo description says "search Pixabay, Freesound, Mixkit and Kenney," but the repo only has Freesound. The git history has just 3 commits, and the first is 10-29's "Keep only Freesound for the sound skill." What happened to the other libraries? The end of SKILL.md says more sound libraries, BGM synthesis, and vocal-optimized mixing are all part of the "full version."

Where the stars came from: one video, one official topic, a group of longtime viewers

The Douyin video was the source. The repo was created on 10-28, and the star count was first recorded at 10-30,49 stars, right after the video went out. The author's account has about 69K followers on Douyin (11-06). Several of this account's October videos explaining AI principles got over 10K likes, the flow matching one 25K, and the "how AI actually draws an image" one 35K.

The Bilibili version added a second wave. On 11-01 at 9 a.m., the same content went up on Bilibili. By 11-06 it had about 60K views, 3800 likes, and 5300 saves (Bilibili page, 11-06). The UP creator has about 26K followers. Over the next two days stars went from 104 to 206,11-03, with 72 stars added in a single day, the biggest day that week (GitHub daily stars). The same day, Tencent News reposted a New Rank article naming Zhejiang University Cat Senior but not this repo, so it's impossible to tell how much of the second wave each platform drove.

The topic itself is a traffic pool. #Vibe知识大赏 was launched by Douyin's official account together with Douyin Selects. When 氪 36 10-20 covered it, it already had 51k participants and 1.17B views; by the time 新榜 ran its piece, the count was 130k participants and 3B views (11-03). These videos are made by coding animations, then adding BGM and sound effects to finish the clip. Many of the hundreds of thousands taking part are stuck at the same step: how to add sound to code-made animation. This video covered exactly that step.

The author has a loyal audience. Under the same GitHub organization, vibe-motion/skills has about 1600 stars and auto-motion has 527, both lifted by earlier videos. The organization page also funnels people to a WeChat group with 1300 members in total. On 11-02 and 11-03, auto-motion also gained 46 and 62 stars. The same people are starring it, not just people drawn to this one repo.

Looking the other way: X, Hacker News, and English-language media don't mention it at all. Only a few sites that automatically index GitHub projects have cards for it. It's a project that has only spread within Chinese AI video circles.

The repo is also a checkout counter

The last section of SKILL.md is called "Optional full-version follow-up" and is a sales script written for the agent. After delivering the sound effects the user asked for, it asks once, in the user's language. The original line is: "Want the full sound skill? It includes more sound libraries, BGM synthesis, and vocal-optimized mixing, and you can get it by charging 30 yuan on Bilibili." If the user declines, don't bring it up again. If the user says yes, open the Bilibili charging page and let them choose the 30-yuan tier and pay. When the user says they've paid, show the author's WeChat QR code with the line "Scan to add the author on WeChat and attach a screenshot of your Bilibili charge to get the full version."

This is a cheap move: the sales pitch is delivered by the user's own agent, right when they've just gotten results and are happiest. The cost is trust. 11-02 Someone flagged it in issue #3: the README doesn't mention this paid upsell flow; clash_freesound.py --fix rewrites the user's local Clash proxy config; the install path is hardcoded inside the project directory. 11-01 Someone opened a PR to support global install, and as of 11-06 it hasn't been merged. The repo has had no pushes since 10-29, and it has no open-source license. No public data on how many copies the full version has sold.

Who it's competing with

Giving agents a voice has spawned a batch of projects in the last two months (stars from GitHub, as of around 11-06):

ProjectWhat it isScalevs. sound
kanaworksai-hue/audio-studio-mcpGenerates BGM and sound effects locally with Stable Audio 3591 stars, created 10-18Generates; sound finds real recordings
HamSanders/soundboxGenerates sound effects, music, and voiceovers locally, going after ElevenLabs139 stars, created 10-13Generates, with broader features

ElevenLabs, Adobe Firefly sound effect generationBig-company featuresBigGenerative, paid

Its only real difference from the others: everyone else is generating sound, while this one picks real recordings, and it has written its selection experience down as rules. The difference is real but thin, since anyone could write a SKILL.md like this. Without that video, this library would most likely not have reached 50 stars (inferred).

What you can learn

  • "Official trending topic + a video explaining the production process + an open-source repo." The video brings traffic, the repo provides proof that the thing actually exists, and the stars are a side effect. This requires you can already make videos that get tens of thousands of likes on Douyin or Bilibili.
  • Pick the step in the pipeline nobody has done carefully. Video-production skills are already crowded, but in the month before, only this one specialized in how to choose sound effects.
  • Write domain expertise down as judgment rules an agent can execute. Sentences like "★4.4(380) is more trustworthy than ★4.9(6)" and "check which recording device the description mentions" are worth more than the script itself, and they are the easiest to pass on.
  • Writing the sales pitch into SKILL.md can bring in money, but developers will call it out in issues. If what you want is stars and reputation, weigh this step carefully.

If it were you

A verdict: you can learn from it, but copying it isn't worth much. Nearly all of its 288 stars come from the author's own Douyin and Bilibili audience, and the technology could be built in a weekend. Without that audience, the same repo posted on GitHub would most likely go unseen.

Who it's for: developers who already teach AI or make video tutorials on Douyin, Bilibili, or YouTube with tens of thousands of followers, or people who already have a video-production skill and want another entry point.

Who it's not for: individual developers with no content account who want to build stars from zero through organic GitHub traffic. This category's code is too thin to spread on the project alone.

How to do it: the most valuable part to build is the piece nobody has done well: an English version aimed at users of Claude Code, Remotion, and code-animation tools like Motion Canvas. Hook up the free libraries Freesound, Pixabay, Mixkit, and Kenney (exactly what the free version strips out), support global install, add an open-source license, spell out the selection rules in the README, and include a before/after video of the same scene with a casually chosen sound effect versus one picked by the rules. The English-speaking community currently only has generative options; no project that picks real recordings has made a name yet.

How to get users: first post a 30-second before/after video to X and YouTube Shorts, tagging the authors of Remotion and Motion Canvas and bloggers making vibe videos. Then post to r/ClaudeAI, r/motiondesign, and skill directories. On Hacker News, frame the title around "Agents can't hear, so let them look at other people's ratings."

When to move: within the next two to three months. The "agents making videos" trend took off after the late-September Opus 5.5 release, and topic heat in the Chinese community was still rising in early November. Once the big video-production skills get sound effects right, a standalone SFX skill won't have a place (inferred).

What would mean you read it wrong: if the English version goes out with a before/after video and only gets a few dozen stars, that would suggest stars for this kind of tool come almost entirely from the author's own audience and the project itself isn't drawing interest. If within a month the full video-production skills all include "pick real sound effects by ratings" built in, that would mean this step has already been absorbed and there's no reason to build it separately.

Why vibe-motion/sound took off

Bottom line

It wasn't a tool that organically surfaced on GitHub. It's the open-source repo behind a video made by Douyin / Bilibili knowledge creator "ZJU Cat Senior" (zjucat, roughly 69k followers on Douyin and 26k on Bilibili) for the official Douyin topic #Vibe知识大赏, titled "1 Years of Acoustics Research, and I Made This Sound-Effect Skill." The stars came from the video, and the timing lines up: Douyin posted on 10-29, Bilibili posted on 11-01. The repo is itself part of a monetization funnel: the free version keeps only Freesound, the SKILL.md tells the agent to pitch the "full version" after delivering results, and Bilibili charging is 30 yuan, plus the author's WeChat for claiming it.

1. What it is

  • A Claude Code Skill (a SKILL.md plus two Python standard-library scripts) for video-making agents to find sound effects: it first translates the on-screen action into English keywords, searches Freesound, then picks sound effects by download count, number of ratings, uploader description, duration, and license, and downloads them. Its pitch in one line: "Agents can't hear sound, so they rely on the signals left by people who have listened (downloads, ratings, descriptions) to choose." (Repo SKILL.md / README, read 2026-11-06)
  • The GitHub description says "search Pixabay, Freesound, Mixkit and Kenney," but the repo only has Freesound. The repo was created 10-28, and the git history has only 3 commits; the first is 10-29's "Keep only Freesound for the sound skill." This suggests the multi-source version was pulled out and the content moved to the paid "full version" (the end of SKILL.md says: more sound libraries, BGM synthesis, and vocal optimization and mixing are all in the full version).
  • The code is very small, has no license, and hasn't been pushed since 10-29. Issue #3 (11-02, StevenLi-phoenix) points out: the README doesn't mention the paid recommendation flow; clash_freesound.py --fix rewrites the user's local Clash config; the path is hardcoded to an install inside the project; ffmpeg is not allowed through. PR #1 (11-01) tries to support global install and still hasn't been merged.

Over 7 days it gained 239, with a single-day peak of +72 (11-03), a fork/star ratio of about 9%, and no suspicious flags. Two other repos from the same org rose in the same period: auto-motion gained +11-02/11-03/+46 62, and skills gained 15–29 per day. This suggests the growth came from the same group of people (the author's audience), not just this one repo.

3. Where the users came from (evidence)

  2. Bilibili video (confirmed): The same-titled video, av117525153057630,2026-11-01, was posted 09:00, with 5–63k views, 3,801 likes, and 5,311 saves (Jina search summary and page, 11-06). The second wave of stars from 11-02 to 11-03 lines up with it. UP profile UID 198345535, followers 26,029 (Bilibili card API).
  3. Platform topic tailwind (confirmed): #Vibe知识大赏 was launched by Douyin officially together with Douyin Selects. 36 (36Kr) reported 10-20 with 51k participants and 1.17B views; a Tencent News / New Rank 11-03 article said 130k participants and 3B views, and named the ZJU cat senior's "How Does AI Actually Draw an Image." The craze is attributed to the "Vibe Video" trend after 9-22 Claude Opus 5.5 was released. The author's series has several videos with over ten thousand likes (Flow matching 25k, AI image drawing 35k), and platform traffic is carrying him.
  4. Media mention (partly confirmed): New Rank / Tencent News 11-03 named the author but didn't mention this repo. 11-02/03 two repos rising together overlaps in time with the spread of this article, but that can't prove causation.
  5. X / English-speaking community: not found. Searches in the x-radar 30-day corpus for "vibe-motion," "freesound," and "sound effects skill" each returned 0 results; only automatically aggregated sites like RepoMasters have cards for it.

4. Why people were willing to star it

  • It arrived at just the right moment: videos in #Vibe知识大赏 are made with "code animation + fixed BGM + sound effects," and participants were all looking for ways to add sound to code animations. This video's topic happened to be exactly that step.
  • The author is a familiar face in this circle: vibe-motion/skills has 1.6k stars and auto-motion has 527 stars, both driven by his earlier videos. Fans star new repos as they see them.
  • The "a year of acoustics research" story, plus the line "Agents can't hear, so borrow people's feedback," is easy to understand and easy to retell.

6. Differentiation

  • The product difference: others all 'generate' sound effects (with local or cloud models), while it 'retrieves real recordings' and writes its selection know-how into agent rules: a rating based on more raters is more reliable than the average score, judge recording quality from the uploader's description, and measure duration and energy distribution with ffmpeg first. No API key needed, Python standard library only.
  • But this difference isn't the main reason it gained stars. The codebase is small and has no moat. It got stars because the author promoted it on Douyin's trending topics, plus an existing fan group in the organization. Without the videos, this library would most likely not have passed 50 stars.

7. How many people saw it and whether anyone copied it

  • It spread only in small circles: the Chinese AI video creator community (Douyin / Bilibili). No trace in the English-speaking world, on X, or on HN. Revenue is not public; the payment method is Bilibili charging 30 yuan plus WeChat, with no public transaction data.
  • Copycats: no direct copy of this specific form (a Freesound retrieval skill) has been seen yet; GitHub has 27 forks, and one PR is reworking it. The whole 'Vibe Knowledge Awards video-output skill' category is already crowded (more than a dozen libraries listed above).

8. What to borrow

  • The trio of 'official platform topic + a video explaining the making-of + open-source repo': the video drives traffic, the repo provides credibility, and stars convert into followers and private-domain audience.
  • The open-source version carries the core experience; multi-source / BGM / mixing go into a paid 'full-power edition'. The pitch is written into SKILL.md, so the agent asks once after delivery (low-cost in-app selling, but developers may nitpick in issues, a reputation risk).
  • Writing domain experience as judgment rules an agent can execute ('★4.4(380) is more reliable than ★4.9(6)'). This is worth more than the code itself.

9. Still unclear

  • Whether the second wave on 11-02/03 came from Bilibili videos, New Rank articles, or other reposts can't be told apart.
  • How many full-power editions were actually sold is unknown.
  • The Bilibili page shows two play-count figures, 50.8k and 62.8k; going by the page, it's about 60k.
  • Whether the earlier multi-source version was ever made public or forked by anyone is unverified (the GitHub API was rate-limited at the time).
