Under Reddit help threads, one reply after another says 'I made a free tool': explainroo gained 42 stars in 900 days, yet the category is already crowded

What it is An open-source toolkit for Claude Code and Codex: the agent writes narration and Canvas visuals, and it voices them locally for free, aligns word by word, and renders a narrated explainer video or product demo MP4, and lets the agent inspect the frames itself.

Why it took off Opus 5.5 made 'AI writes code to make animated videos' suddenly popular. It launched in the peak-heat week, and the author replied with advice and then linked the tool in at least ten related Reddit threads, plus posted unofficial demo videos for OpenCode and Codex in their communities.

CHow you could follow Don't build another explainer-video skill. Pull out its 'agent video self-check' or 'scrape a website into a product demo' as a general tool, or ship a companion package within three days of the next model unlock, copying its Reddit reply playbook.

Grade C: the approach is worth learning, but the topic is saturated: the top rival has three thousand stars, and similar projects two weeks later sit at only one or two hundred. The window Opus 5.5 opened has passed. What's spreading in small circles

After Opus 5.5 launched, 'have Claude write code to make animated explainer videos' suddenly became a web-wide topic. A developer who had only this one repo on GitHub created it on the third day of the craze, packaged 'free local voice + word-level alignment + agent self-checks the visuals' into a tool you can use with one sentence, then replied to every 'how was this made?' thread on Reddit. 42 days, 912 stars. This piece covers how it got those stars, and why following with a similar project is a poor bet now.

A reply

2026 Sep 28, someone posted on r/ClaudeAI asking: 'Is the hype about Opus 5.5 making motion videos real? How is everyone doing it? Is it the Remotion setup?' The thread had 19 comments, one from u/vincent_sch:

It's real. Claude writes HTML/JS that draws the animation and renders it to video. It gets better when the agent checks its own frames for overlaps. I made a free tool for this with Claude Code: github.com/vincentsch/explainroo

The first two sentences genuinely answer the question; the third adds the link. He used the same pattern under at least ten threads between Sep 26 and Oct 2: r/ClaudeAI's 'What does Claude use to make these?? I thought this needed pro design software' (42 upvotes, 48 comments), r/codex's 'What tools do you use with Codex for video?' (his answer: 'Have Codex write JS to draw each frame, ffmpeg renders to MP4, no video model, so it doesn't look AI-made'), a comparison thread on 'ChatGPT Plus vs free Claude for motion graphics'... Each one offers a working suggestion first, then says 'I made a free tool for this'.

The background: Anthropic released Opus 5.5 in Sep 22, and 'Opus 5.5 motion videos' trended on X that week. On Sep 24, a Hacker News post titled 'Opus 5.5 is good at explainer videos' got 433 points and 223 comments. explainroo created its repo on Sep 25. Everyone was asking 'what do you make it with', and it appeared in the week that question peaked.

What it is

An open-source toolkit for coding agents (MIT, JavaScript). Usage is on the first screen of the README: one sentence, copied into Claude Code or Codex:

Make me a short explainer video about [your topic]. Use explainroo for it: clone github.com/vincentsch/explainroo, read its AGENTS.md and follow the steps.

The agent writes two files: script.md is the narration, and scenes.js draws the visuals on Canvas. explainroo handles the rest: Kokoro reads the narration locally (54 voices, 8 languages, no account or API key), Whisper records when each word is spoken, Chrome renders frames in the background, and ffmpeg composes the MP4. It also has camera movement, auto background music and sound effects, several visual styles, vertical / horizontal / square formats, and will also produce subtitles, YouTube chapters, and a thumbnail.

Compared with similar tools, two points stand out:

  • Gives the agent a fix for 'can't see the video': it outputs still frames for each scene and a full-video thumbnail, automatically checks whether text is truncated or overlapping and whether narration mispronounces words, so the agent can look and revise itself. This is the line he kept repeating in replies: 'the agent checking its own frames makes a big difference.'
  • Can make product demos: captures a real website's screenshot, colors, fonts, and copy, rebuilds the interface in the video, then has a mouse pointer click through it.

How the stars came

DateCumulative starsWhat happened
09-250Built the repo, day 5.5 after Opus 3 launched
09-26 ~ 09-29–Replied continuously under video-related threads on r/ClaudeAI and r/codex
09-30~20Released v0.1.0; posted main threads in r/ClaudeAI, r/ClaudeCode, r/coolgithubprojects, plus a Show HN (9 points)
10-01~293+273 in a single day, reached #5 on Trendshift's JavaScript chart that day; posted again in r/opencode and r/webdev
10-05~403Someone recommended it on LinkedIn, writing '403 stars and counting'
10-09 ~ 10-31504 → 696Plateau, +5 to +15 per day
11-02 ~ 11-05716 → 831Accelerated again, +31 / +50 / +34 per day
11-06912GitHub API figure for that day; forks 79

(Trendshift daily data, daily GitHub snapshots, GitHub API, 11-06.)

The biggest day was 10-01, right after he posted in five subreddits in a row. The main threads themselves didn't get many votes: r/ClaudeAI's had 14 upvotes and 12 comments, and the Show HN got 9 points. The best performer was a different kind of post: he used explainroo to make an 'unofficial demo video' for OpenCode, posted in r/opencode with the title 'I made a demo video for OpenCode with my own free tool', which got 62 upvotes and 27 comments; he also made one for Codex CLI and posted it in r/codex. Using another team's trending tool as the video subject and posting in their community makes the video itself an ad for your own tool, which worked better than posting 'I made a tool'.

The second wave in early November lines up with two events: around 11-02 he replied again under an r/ClaudeAI thread about 'how to make animations and videos'; around 11-03, someone on r/claudeskills posted a roundup titled '9 Claude skills for motion design and animation' that included it. Which one contributed more can't be seen from outside (inferred: both did).

The most-repeated selling point was 'free, local, no API key needed'. The only substantive comment on HN said the same thing: 'Local Kokoro voices making it this good is impressive.'

Who it's competing with

This category already had players before Opus 5.5, and it's even more crowded now:

ProjectLaunchedstar(11-06)Compared with alternatives

remotion-dev/remotion202071kThe underlying engine for many similar skills; explainroo writes its own Canvas renderer

There are also launchvideo.io (whose HN hit started the wave), screenci and videozero, paid web tools, plus older drag-and-drop editors like Powtoon and Animaker.

Put explainroo in this table and it's mid-pack. "Free and local" helped it spread, but it didn't beat its peers. anything2explainer, which launched more than two weeks earlier, has 3× its stars, and khan-explainer, two weeks later with the same pitch, has only 151 stars. Timing and how actively the author worked Reddit mattered more than features.

What to learn from it

  • When a platform ships a new capability, ship a companion tool within days. The README's first line rides the trend ("Everyone is making videos with Opus 5.5 right now"), offering a ready answer in the week everyone is asking "how do I do this?" Two weeks later and you get khan-explainer's 151 stars.
  • Treat Reddit help threads as your acquisition pool. Answer seriously first, give one tip the person can use right away, and only add the link at the end. Reply to a dozen-plus threads a week.
  • Use other popular tools' audiences for demo material. Make unofficial demo videos for OpenCode and Codex and post them in their own subreddits; that gets several times more upvotes than "I built a tool" posted in general communities.
  • Package delivery as "one prompt + AGENTS.md". Users learn nothing new; they paste one sentence to their agent. Also list it on directories like skills.sh.
  • Fill the blind spot agents have. Agents can't see video, so give them still frames and automatic checks. That separates you more than adding more effects does.

If it were you

Verdict: copy the playbook, but don't build another "agent makes explainer videos" skill. The wave from Opus 5.5 has been over for six weeks, there are a dozen-plus similar projects, the top one has three thousand stars, and late, undifferentiated entries sit at a hundred or two.

Who it suits: developers who can ship something usable within a week of a model or tool release and are willing to live in Reddit and Discord replying to threads; or people with an existing video project who want to break into a new audience.

Who it doesn't suit: people who want to go head-to-head on "explainer video skill" as a topic; people unwilling to reply thread by thread in communities and hoping the project gains stars on its own.

How to do it: two routes. One: pull out the part it does poorly or nobody does, "visual self-checks for agent-made video" (still frames, truncation, overlap, mispronounced words), and build it as a generic tool any Remotion- or HTML-to-video skill can plug into; or go deep on "scrape a live website and rebuild its UI for product demos," serving indie devs making demo videos for their own products. Two: keep its rhythm and wait for the next release. When the next model or tool unlocks a new capability, ship a "works from one sentence" companion pack within three days.

How to get users: copy its Reddit playbook. Under "how do I make this?" posts, give advice first and then the link. Make unofficial demos with your tool for several popular dev tools and post them in their communities. Then try to get included in roundup threads like r/claudeskills.

How much time you have: if you take the "blind spot" route, aim to launch before Remotion or the top skills build visual self-checks into their own products, which I estimate at one to two months (inference). If you take the "wait for the next release" route, the window is the first week after the new capability ships.

Signs you're reading it wrong: your post has been up for two weeks, has more than a dozen replies, and still sits under 100 stars; or anything2explainer, Remotion, or another top project has already built visual self-checks or product demos into its own product; or Reddit help threads about "agent-made video" are clearly drying up.

Why vincentsch/explainroo took off

In short: after Opus 5.5 launched, "have Claude write code to make animated videos" suddenly blew up. On day 3 the author created this repo, bundling "free local voiceover + word-level alignment + letting the agent check its own frames" into a toolkit an agent can read and use immediately, then commented and posted across dozens of related Reddit threads. It reached about 42 stars in 900 days. This niche is very crowded, and it's only mid-pack among its peers.

1. What it is

  • An open-source JS toolkit (MIT license) for coding agents like Claude Code, Codex and Pi: the agent writes script.md (narration) and scenes.js (Canvas visuals), and explainroo handles voiceover, alignment and rendering into an MP4. Voiceover uses local Kokoro (54 voices, 8 languages), word-level timing comes from Whisper, visuals are drawn in Chrome, and ffmpeg composites the result. It also includes camera movement, auto-generated music and sound effects, 6 visual styles, 16:9 / 9:16 / 4:5 / square aspect ratios, and outputs subtitles, YouTube chapters, thumbnails, GIFs and transparent MOV. (README, github.com/vincentsch/explainroo)
  • Two features are rare among its peers: (1) it gives the agent self-checks: it outputs still frames per scene and a contact sheet for the full video, runs a "layout check" (text truncated or overlapping) and a "voice check" (mispronounced words); (2) it can make product demos: explainroo capture grabs a live website's screenshots, colors, fonts and copy, rebuilds the interface in the video, and has a mouse cursor click through it.
  • The usage is one sentence: "clone this repo, read AGENTS.md, and follow it." The README says it's "currently best with Claude Code + Opus 5.5."
  • The author is vincentsch, who has only this one repo on GitHub (data card owner_repos=1); the README mentions Unspar and Vroni as "my own two products."

4. Where users came from (growth tactics)

  1. Riding a confirmed platform event: Opus 5.5 launched on 09-22, and "Claude writes code to make motion videos" became a phenomenon: trending on X, 433 points on HN, and revid.ai and several Substacks published tutorial roundups. explainroo created its repo on day 3 of the hype (09-25), and the README reads "Everyone is making videos with Opus 5.5 right now" (original Show HN text).
  2. The author personally commented and posted on Reddit (confirmed, the main channel): Brave search shows the author commenting from 09-26 to 10-02 recommending their library under at least 10 related threads, including r/ClaudeAI's "A different kind of Opus 5.5 video prompt", "Lets see your best prompts for the new Opus 5.5 motion videos", "Is the hype around opus 5.5 … real?", "What is Claude using to produce these??", and r/codex's "How are you creating videos using Codex?", among others. The pattern is consistent: give one practical tip first (slow down the pacing, check still frames before rendering), then say "I made a free tool for this." From 09-30 to 10-01 they also posted main threads in r/ClaudeAI, r/ClaudeCode, r/coolgithubprojects, r/opencode and r/webdev. The +273 in 10-01 matches this wave.
  3. Second wave in early November (confirmed): around 11-02 the author again commented in r/ClaudeAI's "How to create animations, videos and images" thread recommending it; around 11-03 an r/claudeskills roundup post, "9 Claude skills for motion design & animation", included it (782★ at the time). The timing lines up with the acceleration in 11-02~11-06.
  4. SEO content site (confirmed): explainroo.com published a batch of guides in one day on 10-03, including how-to-make-an-explainer-video, explainroo-vs-remotion, powtoon-alternatives, animaker-alternatives, kickstarter-video, tiktok-video-size, instagram-reels-safe-zone, kokoro-js and vision-language-models, plus 32 example video pages. A classic programmatic SEO play that captures long-tail keywords.
  5. Passive listings in skill directories and aggregators (confirmed): skills.sh (npx skills add), skillsdirectory (Grade A), SkillsLLM, TypingMind skills, Tutti, opentools.ai, freeaihub and DeepWiki all list it. Whether the author submitted it themselves is unverified.
  6. Secondary spread (confirmed, small volume): a LinkedIn personal post (10-05), an Instagram repost account @repo.creative Reel using a "comment EXPLAIN and I'll DM you the link" hook (date unverified), and a YouTube repost by Alex Hitt introducing it (334 views).
  7. X and big accounts: explainroo doesn't appear in our x-radar corpus, and we found no big account reposting it. The Show HN post got only 9 points; a separate repost got 10-04 points, 2.

5. Why it took off

  • Timing: Opus 5.5 made "an agent writes code to make videos" workable overnight. Everyone was asking "what do I use, how do I do it," and explainroo offered a ready answer in the week the question was hottest.
  • Distribution: the author treated the "which tool should I use" threads on Reddit as a lead pool, answering each relevant post by helping first and linking second, and posting main threads in 5 subreddits on top of that. No money spent, but very diligent.
  • Product hook: "Free, local, no API key," meaning voiceover costs nothing. Almost every secondary-spread post on LinkedIn, IG, TypingMind and elsewhere made this the first selling point. Many competitors depend on ElevenLabs or cloud generation (videowright, vox-director).
  • Near-zero onboarding cost: a one-sentence prompt plus an AGENTS.md written for the agent. Users learn nothing; the agent installs, builds and checks on its own.
  • Polish and presentation: a website, docs, 32 example videos, and version release news. Starting 10-13 it shipped 0.2~0.4.1 in quick succession (multi-language support, Chinese and Japanese, a camera system). It looks like a real product, not a weekend side project.

6. Differentiation, and whether that's why it took off

Most similar skills are "Remotion + cloud TTS + one style." explainroo differs in three ways:

  1. The whole pipeline runs locally at zero cost (Kokoro voiceover + Whisper word-level alignment);
  2. It fills the agent's blind spot of "can't see the video" with still frames, thumbnail strips, layout checks and audio checks, so the agent can find and fix problems itself;
  3. It does product demos: it captures the visual elements of a real website, rebuilds the interface in the video, and adds mouse-click animations.

Is that why it took off? Partly. "Free and local" is the line people quote most when spreading it. But timing and the author's diligence on Reddit are what actually set the scale. The differentiation didn't let it outrun its peers: anything2explainer, which launched 17 days earlier, already has 3k stars, and khan-explainer also pitches "free, local, no key." Its 900 stars are mid-tier in this category, nowhere near the top.

7. Visibility and copycats

  • Visibility: it's circulating in small circles. Mainly in Claude/Codex-related subreddits on Reddit and in skill directories, with a little LinkedIn and IG reposting. It didn't take off on Show HN, and we found no big X account writing about it. No revenue involved.
  • Copycats: the category is already crowded. Direct derivatives include iamyogeshmalkani/explainer-video-generation (built on explainroo's templates and install scripts) and several forks. Near-identical pitches include khan-explainer (10-09, "Free, local, no API keys") and SunandBean/paper2video (10-27, also local Kokoro plus ffmpeg).

8. Takeaways

  • Ship a "companion toolkit" within days of a platform capability launch, opening the README with the hot keyword (Opus 5.5).
  • Treat Reddit help-request threads as a lead channel: give one actionable tip, then say "I made a free tool for this."
  • Deliver as "a one-sentence prompt for the agent + AGENTS.md" to cut install and learning costs to zero, and list on skill directories like skills.sh.
  • Target the agent's blind spots specifically (give it still frames and automatic checks when it can't see the picture). This separates you more than stacking effects does.
  • Launch a full set of long-tail SEO pages on day one: competitor alternatives, tutorials and platform sizes.

9. Uncertain

  • 11-06 Our snapshot 792 and the live 906 don't match. Cause not determined; possibly a caching issue at crawl time.
  • The specific sources of the early-November acceleration: the r/claudeskills roundup and the IG Reel may both be factors, but their contributions are unverified.
  • Scores and comment counts for the Reddit main threads were not retrieved (Reddit blocked scraping).
  • Actual usage is unknown; the author's identity and the scale of Unspar and Vroni are unverified.
