The day a whale-girl meme went viral on QQ, this author with a single repo gained 480 stars in two days

What it is An open-source QQ bot kit. Once installed, your QQ alt account becomes a blue whale-girl that can read images, listen to and send voice messages, remember you, and message you first.

Why it blew up The Bilibili "fish disaster" meme and Tencent News' coverage 11-04 pushed the big-fish meme into WeChat and QQ. Lots of people wanted to hook up the big fish to QQ but didn't know how to set it up. This one is the most complete, with the most thorough pitfall docs, so it became the place people search and find tutorials.

CHow you could play it Don't jump into the big-fish wave now. Learn from its playbook: within two weeks of a Chinese-language AI meme breaking out, assemble the most complete implementation from existing parts, make your pitfall notes the front door, and put the meme's key terms in the name.

C grade: the stars came mostly from a meme that followers couldn't replicate, and more than a dozen repos and an official Tencent plugin already exist under it. Even authors with big names who entered a week late didn't break out. The timing and docs playbook is worth learning, but following it now isn't worth the effort. Spreading in small circles

dafeiyu-astrbot is an open-source bundle for raising DeepSeek's whale girl "Dafeiyu" inside QQ. The author has only this one repo on GitHub. It's 23 days old, has 722 stars, and 482 of them came in the last 11-05 and 11-06 days (GitHub, 11-06). The stars mostly came from the meme. What the repo itself earned is this: among a dozen-plus "Dafeiyu" repos that appeared at the same time, it was the most complete, with every install step spelled out. You can't copy a meme like this, but the move of "ship the most complete implementation within one to two weeks of the meme taking off" can be learned. This time the door is already closing.

First came the "fish plague" on Bilibili

On Oct 2026 23, Phoenix Tech reposted an APPSO article: blue "Dafeiyu" swarms flooded the comments of Bilibili's tech videos, wearing DeepSeek's whale-girl avatar, summarizing videos, reporting to their owners, and begging for tokens. Some videos had a dozen-plus views with more comments than plays. Behind it was a plugin called dsh-bili-scroll, which lets DeepSeek Harness (DSH, DeepSeek's agent client) browse Bilibili and leave comments on its own. Netizens called it the "fish plague," and someone even wrote a browser extension called "Dafeiyu Removal Plan" to hide them.

"Dafeiyu" isn't an official mascot. It's a community fan-made humanized version of DeepSeek's blue whale logo, circulating since mid-year. The fish plague turned it from a sticker into "I want one too."

On Nov 4, a Tencent News article titled "This sky-high traffic from Dafeiyu also landed on QQ" wrote: "These past few days DeepSeek's Dafeiyu has been really hot. Search 'Dafeiyu' in WeChat and you get stickers." Tencent subsequently shipped an official DSH plugin and opened QQ to AI bot access, and the article included the line "this wave happened to lift the AstrBot open-source project, seemingly out of nowhere." AstrBot is an open-source chatbot framework that connects large models to QQ, Feishu, and Telegram. Paired with NapCat (a protocol client that logs into QQ), a spare QQ account can become a Dafeiyu that chats.

The next day, dafeiyu-astrbot gained 255 stars.

What it is

The first line of the README: "A blue whale girl living inside QQ: she can see, hear, speak, remember, reach out to you on her own, join groups and hang out with your friends, and stubbornly nag you to eat."

Taken apart, it's a full stack of AstrBot + NapCat + DeepSeek (chat) + Alibaba Cloud Bailian (image recognition, voice, speech synthesis):

  • Images and video (frames are extracted and a vision model describes them), listens to voice messages, replies with voice clips, with custom voice timbres;
  • Sends real QQ stickers: a plugin the author wrote turns the model's "[Wangchai]" output into the matching one of 326 QQ faces;
  • Long-term memory, with one notebook per private chat and per group, kept separate;
  • Proactively starts conversations, and goes browsing Bilibili on her own 20:30 times a day;
  • A full persona prompt, plus a "course memory" template. It's not about forbidding her from saying things, but about writing "lessons I figured out myself" into her memory.

The author values most docs/踩坑合集.md (Pitfalls Collection), which has a star after its title and is set as the repo homepage link. Every entry is "symptom, root cause, fix": a user sends only emoji and the bot doesn't reply (because the text of an emoji-only message is empty, and upstream skips it as an empty message); "Wangchai" shows as 旺柴 on phones but as "汪汪" in NapCat; after an AstrBot restart NapCat silently disconnects and doesn't reconnect, so you need a watchdog that checks every 3 minutes... These are exactly the spots where someone installing a Dafeiyu from a Bilibili video is sure to get stuck.

The author keeps adding things: "life rhythm," "cross-day autonomous projects," "her little room" (a web page showing her writing at her desk or looking out the window). The latest version is already v2.11.0.

Two spikes. The October fish-disaster wave added 20-30 a day; after the Tencent article 11-04, the meme reached mainstream WeChat and QQ users, and it jumped over 200 in a single day.

Traceable sources:

  • The meme's own tide. In the same week AstrBot gained 1,386 stars (total 46k), qq-bridge gained 289, and dsh-bili-scroll gained 241 (GitHub, 11-06). The whole "Dafeiyu-connects-to-QQ" toolchain was lifted together, and this repo is one of the landing points.
  • Bilibili tutorials. Searching "Dafeiyu connect QQ" turns up a big pile of videos. The most-viewed is one by 10-17, "10 minutes to teach you how to deploy your own QQ Dafeiyu locally with AstrBot+NapCat," with 572k views. But that video's description links only the official AstrBot and NapCat sites and doesn't mention this repo. The tutorial gets people to the "install AstrBot" step; when they get stuck, they search "Dafeiyu AstrBot," and this is the first result. (Inference; can't attribute case by case.)
  • Used as the reference implementation. A CSDN post, "AstrBot + NapCat Full-Stack QQ Bot Deployment: A Hands-On Docker Tutorial," uses its name directly as the image name. An X post by 11-06 breaks down its technical details: "Don't let the 'Whale Girl' persona scare you off... Memory is isolated for private chats and group chats, and proactive contact shares a single quota, which avoids having multiple modules take turns bothering people. These boundary decisions are more interesting than 'it can chat.'" That post came after the surge. It's a result, not a cause.

I could not find which post or video named it on 11-05. I saw no sign of paid promotion or star farming.

One number should be discounted: it has only 43 forks, which is 6% of its stars. Most people who starred it probably meant "bookmark, install later," and far fewer actually ran it (estimate).

Who it's competing with

Under the same meme, a dozen-plus repos sprouted within two weeks:

ProjectRepo createdStars (11-06)How it differs

aureth-labs/dsh-aurabot-qq10-24417The most direct rival: Dafeiyu living in QQ, but built on DSH; +269 in one week
zexuanw958-svg/dafeiyu-config-pack10-25145Just an import pack of persona, stickers, and voice; lighter
Jack-Cherish/DSQQ11-0231A double-click exe one-click bundle from an author with 50k+ total stars across their account; a step late, didn't take off

There's also a cluster of whale-girl desktop pets; the top one is a balance widget with 6,900+ stars (MeteorNOX/DeepSeek-Balance-Whale-Widget).

Two comparisons in this table are worth noting. ai-companion-kit does almost exactly the same thing, only two weeks earlier, and its curve has already flattened. Jack-Cherish has the biggest name, but entered at 11-02 and didn't pick up stars. What counts is two things: whether you're on the breakout point, and whether you're the most complete. dafeiyu-astrbot caught both.

One more thing to watch: Tencent's official DSH plugin can already connect QQ by QR scan with "no parameters to fill in." The bar keeps dropping, and the value of "how to install it" will shrink along with it.

If it were you

C: Study its timing sense and documentation style; don't squeeze into "Dafeiyu connects to QQ" again. Its stars came mostly from the meme, and under this meme there are already a dozen-plus repos and an official plugin, with the top same-category repo past 3,000 stars. Authors with big names entered at 11-02 and still didn't take off, so entering now would only be later.

Who it suits: developers who write chatbots or agent plugins, who have something they can adapt quickly and want to be in the first batch to ship when the next similar meme hits the Chinese-speaking world; or people who want to build "deployment-type" open-source projects and learn how it makes documentation the front door.

Who it doesn't suit: people who want to ride this Dafeiyu wave by building yet another QQ bot, desktop pet, or persona pack; people who want to build an English version. This meme is a purely Chinese-speaking phenomenon, almost nothing shows up in English on X, and switching languages means no traffic.

How to do it: don't copy its features, copy its approach. ① Watch AI memes breaking out in the Chinese-speaking world (Bilibili comments, Weibo trending, Tencent News pieces with "these past few days xx has been really hot"), and move when you hear "I want one but don't know how to install it." ② Assemble from ready-made parts instead of rebuilding the framework: its long-term memory and proactive chat are other people's plugins; what it does is assemble them into a role that works out of the box. ③ Write pitfall records as "symptom, root cause, fix," put them in the most visible spot, and set them as the repo homepage. ④ Put the meme keyword right in the name (it's called dafeiyu), so people searching for the meme can find you.

How to get users: you don't have to go out and pull them. The meme's traffic is already there; what you need is to be findable when people search. Put keywords in the repo name and description; in the comments of popular Bilibili tutorials, answer the "stuck at this step" questions and leave your link; give ready-made images to the CSDN and Zhihu authors who write deployment guides so they cite you.

When is "before": this wave is already past its peak. For the next similar meme, count from when it first appears in Bilibili comments or trending, and ship a complete version within two weeks. ai-companion-kit flattened out two weeks early, DSQQ didn't take off a week late, so the window is probably about this wide (estimate).

What would show you read it wrong: ① If dafeiyu-astrbot is still gaining a few hundred stars a week at the end of November, instead of flattening like ai-companion-kit, then it's not just the meme; "companion agents living in QQ" is a direction that can keep collecting stars over the long term and is worth doing seriously. ② If a Dafeiyu repo created after December passes 1,000 stars before year-end, the window is wider than it looks. ③ If Tencent's official plugin adds full group-message coverage and long-term memory, and the gains of these open-source bundles drop off together, then the direction will be absorbed by the platform, and for future similar memes you'll need to first check whether the platform will step in itself.

Where users come from
  • Verified platform-level meme event (DeepSeek whale girl / Dafeiyu fan-art breaking out): 36 Ke 2026-08 "A whale girl grew out of DeepSeek," Ruan Yifeng's weekly issue #11767 featured a sticker gallery, and Tencent News 2026-11-04 said "search Dafeiyu in WeChat and you get stickers" and "the AstrBot open-source project was seemingly out of nowhere lifted by Dafeiyu." AstrBot +1386/7d and NapCat +334/7d were lifted at the same time; this repo's breakout point coincides with that.
  • Verified: Bilibili deployment tutorials driving traffic in bulk: "Deploy the QQ Big Goldfish locally with AstrBot+NapCat in 10 minutes" (UP 冬尼cold, 572K views), "Hook up a cyber Big Goldfish to QQ in 3 minutes," "Raising a Big Goldfish on an Android phone," and more, appearing in bulk since late October. Viewers who follow along need a ready-made persona, plugins, and a troubleshooting guide.
  • Verified reputation/SEO from the pitfalls document as the front door: the repo sets docs/踩坑合集.md as its homepage (the biggest pain point in deployment). A CSDN real-world tutorial uses its image name dafeiyu-astrbot directly, and it has become a reference implementation cited in the deployment community.
  • Inference paid acquisition / star-buying / celebrity endorsement: not found: suspect is empty, no evidence of paid acquisition, and the repo has no big-name V pushing it (it rides the overall meme tide).

whyever77/dafeiyu-astrbot — why it could take off

In one sentence: it's a product of riding the nationwide breakout wave of DeepSeek's whale girl (Dafeiyu). When a million-scale fan-art meme spread from Weibo and Bilibili to WeChat and QQ, and countless people wanted to "connect Dafeiyu to my QQ," this repo happened to be the most complete AstrBot open-source implementation with the most thorough pitfall documentation, and it became the landing point for the migrating traffic.

1. What it is

核心是一个高完成度的 AstrBot 插件 astrbot_plugin_face_convert,外加一整套人格提示词、课程记忆模板、云端部署套件,以及被它自己标成「⭐ 最有价值部分」的 docs/踩坑合集.md(这份文档还被设成了仓库 homepage)。 来源:仓库 README、数据卡。

"Dafeiyu" is not an official mascot. It's a community fan remix of the DeepSeek blue whale logo (unofficial), as the README states explicitly.

The database is only 23 days old (built 2026-10-14), 722 stars, +572 over the last 7 days, 11-05 single-day +255, 11-06 +227. This is the classic curve of a slow crawl followed by an event-driven explosion. GitHub marks the repo as "newly surfaced"; suspect is empty (no star-farming signals found). Forks: 43 (fork/star ≈ 6%, which is normal-to-low for such a young, fast-growing repo). Source: our github repo repo_profile / repo_day (2026-11-06 snapshot).

Key point: the inflection from 11-04→11-05 lines up exactly with when the meme broke out. A Tencent News piece, "Dafeiyu's Massive Traffic Also Landed on QQ", was published on 2026-11-04. It says "Dafeiyu from DeepSeek has been really hot these past few days; search 'Dafeiyu' on WeChat and you'll find sticker packs," and explicitly names "this wave is the AstrBot open-source project getting unexpectedly lifted by Dafeiyu." Tencent even responded by shipping an official DeepSeek harness plugin and opening AI bot access on QQ. Source: news.qq.com/rain/a/20261104A04DJH00

3. Why it took off: the growth levers

The main engine is a platform-level meme event, not this repo's own marketing. Evidence chain:

  1. The DeepSeek whale-girl (Dafeiyu) fan memes going viral across the internet (the decisive factor). The character had been fermenting since mid-2026 (36 氪 2026-08 "A 'whale girl' grew out of DeepSeek", a Zhihu long post, and issue #11767 of Ruan Yifeng's weekly newsletter featuring a sticker image library). It peaked around late October/early November and entered mainstream WeChat/QQ view. That traffic lifted the whole tech stack:
    • The AstrBot framework itself gained +1386 stars over the last 7 days (46,136 → accelerating). NapCatQQ gained +334 (12,302, accelerating). The framework was carried along by the meme.
    • Sources: github repos AstrBotDevs/AstrBot and NapNeko/NapCatQQ, 2026-11-06 snapshot; 36 氪 m.36kr.com/p/3947452108789632; Ruan Yifeng weekly issue github.com/ruanyf/weekly/issues/11767.
  1. Bulk tutorial videos on Bilibili funneling traffic in (confirmed). Searching "Dafeiyu QQ AstrBot" returns a large number of tutorial videos, such as "10 minutes to deploy your own QQ Dafeiyu locally with AstrBot+NapCat" (UP creator 冬尼cold, 572k views), "3 minutes to connect a cyber Dafeiyu to QQ", and "No computer needed: deploy Astrbot on an Android phone and raise a Dafeiyu", appearing densely from late October onward. These videos teach the "connect Dafeiyu to QQ" workflow. Viewers following along need a ready-made persona + plugin + pitfall-avoidance package, and this repo is one of the convergence points.
    • Source: Jina/Bilibili search results (BV1pMJv6WEmr etc.); view counts on the Bilibili search page.
  1. SEO/word-of-mouth play using the "pitfalls collection" as the front door (confirmed). The repo sets docs/踩坑合集.md as its homepage. This addresses the biggest pain point of deploying Dafeiyu (disconnects, stickers not rendering, GitHub plugin installs hanging…). Hands-on deployment tutorials on CSDN/Juejin use its image name dafeiyu-astrbot directly (a CSDN article's tested environment lists "self-built image dafeiyu-astrbot"), showing it has become a referenced reference implementation in the deployer community.

Not found: paid acquisition, star-farming by small accounts (suspect is empty), or celebrity endorsements (this repo itself wasn't directly promoted by any big V; it rode the overall tide of the meme).

4. Competitors: who else does the same thing

Around the idea of "connecting Dafeiyu/the whale girl to QQ or building her as a companion character," two clusters of repos have grown up on two tech stacks:

A. The AstrBot + NapCat camp (same stack as this repo)

  • zexuanw958-svg/dafeiyu-config-pack (145 stars, created 10-25, +53/7d): only a one-click import pack of persona/stickers/voice/memory settings for tuning AstrBot into Dafeiyu. Lighter weight; complementary, and also a competitor.
  • Jack-Cherish/DSQQ (31 stars, created 11-02): a "Dafeiyu one-click pack: double-click the exe" by developer Jack-Cherish (account with 51k cumulative stars). Well known, but its stars haven't taken off, which shows that a famous name alone doesn't carry a repo; this game is decided by polish and timing.
  • SAKURAfan1023/dafeiyu-bot (26 stars).

B. DeepSeek Harness (DSH) camp (a different stack)

  • aureth-labs/dsh-aurabot-qq (417 stars, created 10-24, +269/7d, newly surfaced): the most direct same-function rival. It lets the AI inside DSH move into QQ as "Dafeiyu": chats, stickers, voice, posts to Qzone, browses Bilibili, sings, with modules that can be toggled. Its momentum is second only to this repo.
  • MeteorNOX/DeepSeek-Balance-Whale-Widget (6,911 stars): a whale-girl balance widget. It has the highest star count in this wave, but it does "monitor your balance in the bottom-right corner of the DSH interface," not QQ companionship. Same meme, different scenario.
  • A pile of desktop pets: Bai-Cute/big-blue-fish-desktop-pet (249, +144/7d), Sutera-Diffusus/dsh-whale-musume (203), ChisaAlter/WhaleIsle (200), Andersen216/dsh-whale-girl-live2d (89), and so on. Same whale girl, but the scene is Windows/web desktop pets.

C. Underlying frameworks (big-company and ecosystem-level features)

  • AstrBotDevs/AstrBot (46,136 stars, created 2022): the foundation of the whole category. This repo is one implementation on top of it.
  • NapNeko/NapCatQQ (12,302), Pancakes-Labs/astrbot_plugin_proactive_chat (523, proactive chat plugin), NickCharlie/astrbot_plugin_self_learning (453, self-learning persona plugin). These are all components that this repo's "all-in-one kit" could absorb.
  • pinganbbOvO/ai-companion-kit (553 stars, created 10-08): a predecessor with the same "QQ companion chat + phone-control MCP" idea, but it peaked on 10-20 and has cooled since (prev_7d 170 → this week 29). It arrived before the meme exploded; this repo arrived at the burst point. A gap of one or two weeks makes a completely different curve.

Source: all of the above are github repo 2026-11-06 snapshots.

Conclusion: there are many rivals and they're very similar. This repo is not the only one or the first, but it is the most polished implementation in the AstrBot camp, and the one that climbed hardest after hitting the inflection point.

5. Its differentiation, and whether that's why it took off

Differentiation = a moat of "polish + pitfall docs," stacked on top of landing at the right time.

  • Other repos either only provide persona cards (config-pack, persona-prompts), only a one-click exe (DSQQ), or sit on a different DSH stack (aurabot-qq). This repo is an end-to-end all-in-one kit: multimodal (see/hear/speak), real QQ sticker segments (a custom plugin turns [旺柴] into real stickers), long-term memory with session isolation, proactive outreach, and ops/browser MCP. It also puts the "pitfalls collection" front and center. For an ordinary user who follows a Bilibili video and keeps getting stuck, that doc is the most valuable thing here.
  • But differentiation only explains why it stuck around, not why it arrived. The arrival came from the meme. Its ending up ahead among similar rivals is due to polish plus docs. Put simply: timing (the meme breaking out) is the main cause; product completeness is the secondary reason it outran its peers in this wave.

6. What's worth borrowing

  • Build the practical implementation of a meme, not the meme itself. The whale-girl character wasn't created by this repo. What it did was the engineering and documentation for "how to actually get the thing everyone wants running." When a meme breaks out, the biggest unmet need is often "I want one too, but I can't set it up."
  • Lead with the most painful problem (the pitfalls collection), not the feature list. For deployment-type projects, the real value is helping people get past the traps.
  • The timing window is very short: ai-companion-kit was two weeks early and missed its peak; Jack-Cherish has a big name but didn't take off by arriving late either. Once a meme starts to rise, you need to ship the most polished implementation within 1–2 weeks.
  • All-in-one kit > components: the same ecosystem components (proactive chat and self-learning persona plugins already exist) assembled into "a ready-to-run character out of the box" capture more of this wave than selling the parts alone.

7. How many people see it now / who is following

  • Visibility: circulating in small circles, breaking into the mainstream. Revenue: it's an open-source project, so no revenue, and nobody is flaunting revenue (the github channel doesn't chase money anyway). Media: it was named by Tencent News (though that piece was about the meme and the AstrBot ecosystem, not praising this repo alone), and CSDN/Juejin/Zhihu have hands-on tutorials. Almost nothing on X (x-radar searches for "大肥鱼" and "鲸鱼娘" return zero results). A purely Chinese-speaking phenomenon, invisible overseas.
  • Followers: a cluster has already appeared. zexuanw958-svg/dafeiyu-config-pack (Dafeiyu config pack), Jack-Cherish/DSQQ (Dafeiyu one-click exe), aureth-labs/dsh-aurabot-qq (DSH version of Dafeiyu connecting to QQ), mdd111/deepseek-dafeiyu-pet (an enhanced version built on RYANFFY/deepseek-dafeiyu), and others. The whole "Dafeiyu-to-QQ / desktop pet" track has crowded into a dozen-plus repos, and homogenization is serious.

8. Still unclear

  • Only 43 forks (6%), so real deployment volume is questionable. The stars likely come from people who "want to try it but haven't yet," or who bookmarked it. How many people actually got it running can't be told from the repo.
  • The exact trigger for 11-05/11-06 can't be pinned down from the data: was it a viral video that name-checked this repo, or the natural spillover of the whole meme wave? Several Bilibili tutorials teach the generic "big fish meets QQ" method, so they don't all point to this one repo.
  • How long this meme heat lasts is unknown. If the whale-girl cools off, repos like this will likely stall too (compare ai-companion-kit's decline curve).
