One repo, four posts: how video-director got 369 stars in the packed "Claude makes videos" niche

What it is A skill for Claude Code: you describe what you want, and it has the model lay out a timeline, write animation code, and render frame by frame into MP4. Then scripts check for the things the model can't see: black frames, text too small, white flashes, dropped frames, audio levels.

Why it blew up The author is a Chinese AI creator with 77.9k subscribers. Over 9 days they posted four times on X, each time with a different hook. 10-31 That post brought in 114 stars in a single day. 11-02 Then a 179k-subscriber English YouTube roundup named it "the quality-check one," which added another hundred-plus stars.

CHow to ride it Don't build another video-niche tool. Take its playbook into another skill-crowded space: distill rules from a few top libraries, write measurement scripts for what the model can't see, pair them with a with/without comparison table, then post one library three or four times with different hooks, and pitch it to English-language authors writing "N repos" roundups.

Grade C: there are already over a hundred Claude video skills, with the top ones at tens of thousands of stars. Even the author, with tens of thousands of followers, only got three hundred-plus stars from four posts, so copying it isn't worth it. What's worth learning is the meta-layer positioning of "distill + QA" and the multi-hook posting approach. Chatter in small circles

A Claude Code skill that makes Opus 5.5 act as a director, rendering short videos frame by frame into MP4 with code, plus two QA scripts. It got 9 stars in 369 days, but in this niche that's a modest start: the top peers sit at 10k to 80k stars. Where the stars came from is clear: the author posted four times on X, and an English YouTube roundup brought a second wave. Below: what it is, where the stars came from, who it's competing with, and whether you should build a similar one.

Four posts

In the early hours of Oct 2026 28, the Chinese AI creator "AI超元域" (called win4r on GitHub, 77.9k YouTube subscribers) created the video-director repo. Half an hour later he posted the first tweet on X: "I open-sourced a video production Skill built specifically for Claude Opus 5.5." It got about 40 stars on day one.

Oct 29, second post, different angle: "Finally, no more making videos by gacha pulling."

Oct 31, third post: "Let Claude be the director and shoot videos with code!" with two demos from the README: a hand-drawn floating city slowly colored in (30 seconds), and a 3D little orange figure typing on a computer (16 seconds). That day it gained 114 stars, its biggest day so far. A commenter asked the sharp question underneath: "Does the check step have the model look at rendered frame captures, or just check the code and timeline?"

Nov 5, fourth post, another tone: "Found a super useful open-source project: video-director." It was still his own repo.

By Nov 6 it had 369 stars and 33 forks on GitHub (11-06).

What it is

A skill you install in Claude Code. Say something like "make a 15-second looping release video for our CLI tool" or "make a 30-second narrated explainer on Bloom filters, 16:9", and it has the model first lay out the timeline with numbers, then write HTML, Canvas, Three.js, or Remotion animation code, render frame by frame into MP4, and finally run scripts to check the result, fixing whatever is wrong.

It differs from peers in two main ways:

  • It doesn't give you a shot library or a style library. The README's second paragraph says it "deliberately ships no shot library to copy." The author distilled the rules that 8 similar open-source repos (lemo-opuscar, video-shotcraft, claude-motion, animate, and others) each worked out on their own into 13 principles and checkpoints for each stage, with sources in METHODOLOGY.md.
  • It lets the model "see" and "hear". qa_video.py measures what the model can't perceive: whether the first frame is black, whether text in the first 3 seconds is big and clear enough, white flashes, whether the picture froze, loop seams, loudness, and silent stretches.

The README also includes a self-test table: with the skill installed versus without, assertions passed 28/28 vs 25/28, and blind-review preference 2 vs 1; version two vs version one, 30/32 vs 26/32 on assertions, and blind-review preference 3 vs 0. The author wrote himself: "each configuration was run only once; treat it as a direction, not a measurement."

Where the stars came from

Lining up daily star counts against posting times shows a close match:

DateWhat happenedStars that day
10-28Repo created, first post on XAbout 40
10-29Second post, "no more gacha pulling"77(10-30)
10-31Third post, "Let Claude be the director" + two GIFs191,+114
11-02AI LABS (179k YouTube subscribers) published "Insane GitHub Repos To Actually 10x Claude Video Editing," listing 8 repos, calling this one "the one that checks any Claude Code video project"; by 11-06 it had about 87k views.219
11-03 to 11-05The long tail of the roundup video+27 to +43 per day
11-05Fourth post, "found an open-source project"; the same day someone on Medium wrote "8 Free GitHub Repos" following AI LABS's list.320

The first four days brought about 190 stars, mostly pushed by the author on X. After 11-02, another hundred-plus stars came in, mainly from that English roundup video. Skill directories like TypingMind, trendshift, and mcpmarket auto-indexed it, and a post on r/claudeskills about "9 animation skills" mentioned it. I found no Hacker News or Product Hunt listing and no separate reshare by a major English account.

The "QA only" angle didn't cause the star growth. Peers in the same period that went with style libraries and plug-and-play use grew 5 to 10 times faster. Its star curve tracks only posting and the roundup video. The differentiation did matter in one way: it let the roundup author write a one-line blurb that didn't duplicate anyone else's, so it got picked for the list.

No updates since version 10-30. On 11-05 someone filed the first issue, pointing out a bug in the loudness check of qa_video.py: when the true peak is exactly 0.0 dBTP, Python treats it as "no value," so a file that should be flagged for clipping passes instead. On 11-06, someone also submitted a Japanese README. People are using it, but not many.

Who it's competing with

"Have a coding agent write animation code and render it into MP4" has been a category since HeyGen open-sourced HyperFrames in 2026 March. After Opus 5.5 launched, making videos became its showcase demo, and similar skills clustered in 9 and October. A list called awesome-claude-video-skills already collects 180 repos. Star counts around 11-06:

By stars, it ranks middle-to-low among its peers. I found no copycat repos following it; if anything, it's itself a "distilled version" of the peer repos.

What the author has

Whether you can follow this depends partly on what's here. win4r has 23 repos with about 10k stars combined; the top two are AISuperDomain (1,995) and ClawTeam-OpenClaw (1,471). 1,954 GitHub followers, 77.9k YouTube subscribers, and the same name on Bilibili. His usual pattern is building a Claude / OpenClaw-related tool and promoting it on his own channel and X, and most of his repos stop gaining stars soon after.

In other words, 369 stars roughly equals what "a Chinese big creator seriously builds one repo in a saturated niche and posts it four times" gets. Someone without this audience copying the approach won't get that first wave.

If it were you

Grade C: you can learn two moves, but building another video skill in this niche isn't worth it. There are over a hundred of them, the top ones got a head start of months, and even the author only got three hundred-plus stars from four posts.

Good fit for: AI tool creators with a few thousand followers who want another open-source project in their portfolio, or developers with a mature video/animation workflow who will seriously build measurement scripts and comparison tests.

Bad fit for: people with no posting channels hoping to get their first stars from "yet another Claude video skill"; people who can only write prompts and can't build check scripts that produce real numbers.

How to do it: don't make a content library, make a meta-layer. Pick a niche already crowded with skills (not necessarily video; it could be slide decks, landing pages, or data charts), distill the rules that 5 to 10 top repos each worked out into a sourced methodology, then write scripts to measure what the model can't see, and pair it with a with-vs-without comparison table. That way you don't have to compete with the leaders on style count, and you can still claim a spot in the roundups. Its own gaps are also an opening: 10-30 it has stopped updating, the scripts have known bugs, and it doesn't cover vertical short-video platform details or evaluation of character animation. But a successor relying on continuous updates to accumulate stars won't move fast.

How to get users: copy its posting rhythm. One repo, three or four posts, a different hook each time ("no more gacha pulling," "let AI be the director," "found a great project"). Put a directly playable GIF at the top of the README, since that becomes your post material. If you have no audience, the more effective step is sending the repo to the English YouTube and Medium authors who make "N GitHub repos" roundups; that's where its second wave came from. Also prepare the metadata once so skill directories can auto-index it.

When to move: the video niche has already passed its peak. Taking the "distill + QA" move to another niche works best while that niche's top skills have just appeared and roundup authors are still looking for "the different one." That's usually within one or two months after the leaders launch.

Signs you misjudged: ① It or similar QA/review-route repos like motion-video-kit see daily star gains back above 50 before December, which would show the "meta-layer" itself has demand, not just roundup spillover; ② a same-niche skill launched after it, with no big creator promoting it, passes a thousand stars within a month, which would show the niche isn't saturated yet; ③ Remotion or HyperFrames officially builds finished-video QA into the framework, and then the "meta-layer" position is gone.

win4r/video-director: why a 'small' Claude video skill reached 300+ stars

Short answer: it did not really take off. 9 days and 369 stars is a small number in the already crowded 'Claude makes video with code' space, where the top libraries sit at 12k to 80k stars. It got these stars almost entirely through the built-in Chinese audience of its author, AI超元域 (win4r): over 9 days he posted 4 times on X. A second, long-tail wave came from an AI LABS (179k subscribers) YouTube roundup that listed it. The product really is different from the rest: it is a 'method + gates + measurement scripts + eval' distilled from 11/2 similar libraries, with no shot or style library of its own. But that only gave it a line in roundups as 'the one that checks quality'; it is not what drove growth. 8

His 23 repos total about 10k stars; the top ones are AISuperDomain (1995) and ClawTeam-OpenClaw (1471). His playbook is 'build a Claude/OpenClaw tool or skill, then promote it on his own channels'; most repos stopped gaining soon after launch.

2. Competitors: the niche was already crowded

'Have a coding agent write HTML/Canvas/Remotion code and render it frame by frame into MP4' became a category after HeyGen open-sourced HyperFrames in April 2026. Broken down: the first 4 days brought roughly 190★, mostly from the author's own back-to-back X posts (likely also synced to Bilibili / YouTube community, not verified). After 11-02, about 130★ more came in, mainly pulled in by the AI LABS English roundup video. I found no HN or Product Hunt coverage, and no evidence of a standalone repost by a big English-language X account. Our x-radar corpus returned 0 results for every search today, which suggests a service problem, so X engagement could not be verified.

4. Why it took off (at small scale)

  1. Built-in distribution from the author: a Chinese AI channel with 78k subscribers, plus steady exposure on X. The same playbook, 'launch → repost with a new hook → promote again as a good project I found', ran 9 times in 4 days, and the star steps line up with the post times.
  2. Rode the Opus 5.5 'video with code' wave: after Opus 5.5 launched, 'no Sora/Veo, render frame by frame with code' became something everyone demoed (the author's own channel has several Opus 5.5 / Fable 5.5 animation tests). The README title says 'Primary model: Claude Opus 5.5' outright, aiming straight at that traffic.
  3. Demos that spread: the README's top section has two GIFs, a hand-drawn floating city for 30 seconds and a 3D orange character typing at a computer for 16 seconds, which is enough material for X posts.
  4. It has its own slot in the roundups: the others sell style libraries and shot cards; this one sells 'quality checks', namely qa_video.py, which tests first frame, contrast, white flashes, loop seams, loudness and silence. That is why AI LABS could describe it as 'Checks on any Claude Code video editing project' without overlapping the others. This is the reason it got included in the roundup.

5. Differentiation

  • How it's built: it does not offer shots or styles to copy. It distills the rules that 8 similar libraries (lemo-opuscar, video-shotcraft, claude-motion, animate…) each found on their own into 13 principles plus phase gates (METHODOLOGY.md states the sources). It then turns the parts the model 'can't see or hear' into script-based measurements, with two scripts and 3 eval briefs.
  • Eval table: round 1, skill installed vs. not installed, assertions passed 28/28 to 25/28, blind review 2–1, at a cost of roughly 2x the time and tokens; round 2, 30/32 to 26/32, blind review 3–0. The author also admits each configuration was run only once: 'treat these as a direction'.
  • Is that the growth driver? No. The differentiation is persuasive to developers, but it does not show up in stars. lemo-opuscar, video-shotcraft and claude-animated-shorts, which go the style-library, plug-and-play route, gained 5–10 times faster. Its star curve lines up only with the author's posts and the AI LABS video, not with the 'quality checks' pitch. Its main effect was giving it one line that could be written up in a roundup.

6. Visibility and copycats

  • Visibility: spread only within small circles. In the Chinese AI self-media scene, the author promoted it himself; in English, it appeared in the AI LABS video (87k views), one Medium article and one Reddit roundup post, always as 'one of 8 libraries' or 'one of 9', with no standalone coverage. No paid promotion, and no revenue question.
  • Copycats: found no library that clearly copies it. indieshade/video-director-workflow (23★), created 10-06, is older, so it doesn't count as a copy. In fact, it is itself a 'distilled version' of the similar libraries.

7. Takeaways

  • "Distill N similar libraries → a methodology + measurement scripts + an eval table": in the saturated skill space, you can claim a "meta layer" without going head-to-head with content libraries, and collection authors are more likely to pick it up.
  • Use the eval table as the selling point: data with a control group and blind review is more credible than a skill that just posts a prompt.
  • Distribution: the Chinese big-V playbook is to post one library 3–4 times, changing the hook each time ("gacha", "be the director", "discover a project"). Add the long tail from English YouTube collection videos, and one skill can pull a few hundred stars. For someone without traffic, getting into an English YouTube collection works better than posting yourself.

8. Uncertain

  • Likes and view counts for 4 X posts weren't captured (x-radar returned empty, and the page Jina fetched had no counts).
  • I didn't verify whether it was also posted to Bilibili, a YouTube video, or a WeChat Official Account. The card's "cited by 36Kr" refers to the author's earlier work, not this library, and I didn't verify that either.
  • Stars aren't usage: the issues came after 0,10-30 with no commits, so you can't tell how many people actually use it.
