# Same model, renamed, and stars grew 8×: Xiaomi-OCR-0's stars came from the two characters "Xiaomi"

**What it is** A very small document-recognition model open-sourced by Xiaomi. It turns documents into Markdown, extracts fields from receipts into JSON, answers questions about text in images, runs on a laptop, and an AI agent can install it with a single sentence.

**Why it blew up** The tech had been fully there since late September, but nobody was paying attention. In October 30, the repo moved to Xiaomi's main account and the official open-source announcement dropped. Chinese media wire stories, X news accounts, and YouTube coverage then picked it up, and the stars started climbing.

**C** **How you can follow this** Don't train another small OCR model; copy the packaging instead: a one-sentence agent install, picking first place on a niche benchmark for your headline, and proactively thanking and linking community derivatives. If you build, build the parts they didn't do well, like a general local OCR agent skill, or fine-tuning for a minority language or handwritten receipts.

Grade C: the stars came mainly from Xiaomi's main account and official launch, which followers can't replicate. In the same month six or seven similar small OCR models shipped, and higher-scoring individual projects got only a few hundred stars. What's worth learning is the launch and packaging playbook, not copying the project. Public / widely discussed

Xiaomi-OCR-0 is a 0.8B document recognition model Xiaomi open-sourced. It converts documents to Markdown, extracts fields from receipts, and answers questions about text in images. It was released in late September under a sub-team account and gained only about 50 stars in a month. In Oct 30 the repo moved to Xiaomi's main account, Xiaomi officially announced the open-sourcing, and it gained 817 stars over the next 7 days. The model, paper and benchmark scores didn't change. This piece explains how it picked up stars, how crowded the space is, and what you can learn about getting stars for your own open-source project, and why you shouldn't copy the playbook.

### 50 stars in one month

In 2026 September 28, an account called SeerRay-Lab created a repo on GitHub named Xiaomi-OCR-0. Two days later a tech report appeared on arXiv and the weights went up on Hugging Face. The README's News section had a single line: "2026-09-30: tech report and model weights released."

The numbers were solid: on Real5-OmniDocBench (a test of document parsing under simulated scans, bent paper, and screen photos) it scored 95.24 and ranked first. Averaged across five OCR question-answering tests it scored 83.2, beating Qwen3.5-2B (80.9), a model 2.5 times its parameter count. The name also included "Xiaomi."

But for the next month, almost nobody noticed. It went from 9 to 72 stars in October and 30 to 119 stars in late October, adding single digits a day (GitHub daily star counts). The only buzz during this stretch came from the community: a few people on their own converted it into formats like GGUF and MLX so it could run locally. In Oct 8, the README added a note thanking them.

### What happened after October 30

On October 30, two things happened the same day: the repo moved from SeerRay-Lab to the xiaomi-research org (the old address now redirects automatically, and so does the Hugging Face page), and Xiaomi officially announced the open-sourcing (Baidu Baike cites IT Home).

What followed was a standard big-company launch spread:

| Date | Cumulative stars | Added that day | What happened |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10-30 | 119 | +2 | Repo transfer, official open-source announcement |
| 10-31 | 214 | +95 | NetEase ran a just-after-midnight story, "Small-size all-rounder! Xiaomi announces 0.8B OCR model open-source"; Phoenix, Sohu, and Juheyuan followed with nearly identical wording; on X, Chinese AI news account @0xLogicrw and @thePandaily, which covers Chinese tech for overseas readers, posted |
| 11-01 | 371 | +157 | Introduction videos began appearing on YouTube |
| 11-02 | 547 | +176 | Another wave of community quantized versions (MLX 4-bit, GGUF, LiteRT) |
| 11-03 | 761 | **+214** | Peak single day; HackerNoon ran an introduction article |
| 11-04 | 854 | +93 | |
| 11-05 | 904 | +50 | |
| 11-06 | 936 | +32 | Decline |

(GitHub daily star counts, as of 11-06.)

The overseas wave included at least 5 YouTube videos with titles like "Xiaomi-OCR-0 is HERE!" and "The 0.8B AI That Destroys Qwen 3.5 on CPU!", plus an Italian news site, Instagram short videos, and Reddit posts. The single-day peak came in November 3, two or three days after the Chinese media wave, which lines up with this batch of overseas videos (inferred; view counts not verified).

Wide reach, but shallow: it was mostly news reposts and "it's here" videos. Hacker News had no relevant discussion (the OCR stories that hit HN around the same time were Datalab's Indra and Baidu's Unlimited-OCR-2), and no major X accounts were seen engaging with it seriously.

The best control group is in the same team: SeerRay-Lab's other two repos, Xiaomi-Lens-0 and Xiaomi-GUI, both have Xiaomi in the name and still have only about a hundred stars each (105, 90). **Having 'Xiaomi' in the name isn't enough. What it takes is the main Xiaomi account plus one official launch.**

### How many people are actually using it

Stars aside, downloads tell the real story. On Hugging Face, the official weights got 23,683 downloads in the last 30 days. A community GGUF quantization (prithivMLmods) got 37,986 downloads, more than the official release (Hugging Face, 11-06). Searching Xiaomi-OCR-0 turns up 12 derivative repos, including GGUF, MLX and LiteRT builds, and someone has even fine-tuned it for Vietnamese. There are also two community packages on Ollama.

In other words, most of the people actually using it are running it on their own machines with llama.cpp or Ollama. That's what makes the 0.8B size matter: it runs on a laptop CPU.

### It has no shortage of rivals, and it launched right at the most crowded moment

From 2026 to November 9, open-source small OCR / document-parsing models came out in a flood. October alone saw:

| Project | Who made it | Launched | Scale (11-06) | Compared with alternatives |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SoMarkAI/OXR | SoMark | 10-05 | 3,603 stars, 7 days +1,147 | Same-period launches with more stars and more momentum than Xiaomi's |
| LightOnOCR-3 | LightOn (France) | 10-06 | HF downloads 12k (0.8B) / 21k (4B) | Same 0.8B size, almost no buzz on GitHub |
| Indra | Datalab | 10-13 | 1,643 star | 1M parameters, recognition only, runs on CPU |
| OvisOCR3 | Alibaba | 10-21 | 51k HF downloads | Predecessor OvisOCR2 is also 0.8B, with scores almost identical to Xiaomi's |
| Unlimited-OCR-2 | Baidu | 10-26 | 311k HF downloads | Focused on very long documents |
| MiniCPM-OCR 1.0 | ModelBest (面壁) | 10-27 | 823 stars, 40.7k HF downloads | 1.3B, and its comparison table names Xiaomi directly as the rival |

Further back are the established PaddleOCR (92k stars), MinerU (83k stars), DeepSeek-OCR (24k stars), and Zhipu's GLM-OCR (0.9B, 1.74M HF downloads, 70 times Xiaomi's). There's also TeleOCR, from an individual account of a telecom employee: 1.2B, scoring 96.87 on OmniDocBench v1.6, slightly above Xiaomi, with only 365 stars.

So a good score isn't what sets it apart. TeleOCR scores higher but has a fraction of the stars; OvisOCR2 scores the same and had no launch event. Among same-period releases, its 936 stars trail OXR and sit in the same range as MiniCPM-OCR.

### The small things it got right

A brand is something followers can't get, but the following moves are open to anyone, and they did help once it picked up traction:

**Install in one sentence.** The first install method in the README isn't pip. It's 'send this sentence to your agent':

> Read and execute [raw.githubusercontent.com/SeerRay-Lab/Xiaomi-OCR-0/main/SKIL…](https://raw.githubusercontent.com/SeerRay-Lab/Xiaomi-OCR-0/main/SKILL.md)

An agent can read it and set up the environment itself, download the weights, install the inference framework, and register the MCP service. The repo also ships a browser demo and a way to run it on Ollama. Few projects in this space are packaged this way, which fits the moment when everyone is looking for tools to give their agents in 2026.

**Pick a leaderboard you can top.** On OmniDocBench v1.6 it actually ranks second, but it is first on the Real5 sub-leaderboard. The README leads with that first place, and media headlines followed with 'No. 1 under 1B' and 'the small-model all-rounder'.

**One model, three jobs.** Document-to-Markdown, field extraction to JSON, and visual Q&A. Most models at the same size do only the first. That made 'an all-rounder at 0.8B' an easy line to repeat.

**Credit the people who build on you.** As soon as the community released a quantized version, the README named them in News and linked to it. The result: GGUF builds were ready before the official launch, and within a week of release six or seven more derivatives appeared, each one a new entry point.

**Launch quietly, then announce.** First publish the paper and weights under a sub-team account, letting community quantizations and early feedback build up. A month later, use GitHub's repo transfer to move it to the main account. Old links redirect automatically, so the stars and inbound links are kept, and then you run one official launch.

### If it were you

**Verdict:** Don't copy the idea of building yet another small OCR model. Its stars came from the main Xiaomi account and one official launch, which you can't get. This category produced six or seven similar models in a single month, and the individual projects with higher scores have only a few hundred stars. What you can take is its packaging method.

**Who it's for:** Developers who already have a technically sound open-source tool or model that nobody sees, and who want to learn how to make it easier to try, to share, and to write up in headlines.

**Who it's not for:** Individuals or small teams who want to train a document model from scratch to chase stars. It used about 170M training samples, its peers in the same class are Baidu, Alibaba, Zhipu and ModelBest, and a launch gets buried under the other releases that same week.

**How to do it:** If you must work in this area, fill a gap they left instead of releasing another model. For example: an agent skill or MCP service that can wrap any small OCR model, installed with one sentence, running locally, with output directly as JSON. Or fine-tune and benchmark for a language or document type they cover poorly (someone has already fine-tuned for Vietnamese; Thai, Indonesian and handwritten receipts are still open). Follow its playbook: install in one sentence on the README's first screen, put a first place on a niche benchmark in the headline, and proactively link and thank community derivatives.

**How to get users:** It relied on press releases and news accounts, which you can't count on. More realistic channels are Hacker News (Xiaomi didn't get there this time), X authors who write about agent tools, and YouTube channels focused on 'running AI locally'. The overseas videos show that such channels are happy to feature small models that 'run on a CPU'.

**When to move:** The small-OCR release wave is still going, and the agent skill / MCP packaging is still new. In two or three months, 'one sentence and your agent installs it' will become standard and stop being a selling point.

**What would show you're wrong:** (1) Xiaomi-OCR-0 keeps adding dozens of stars a day a month later, with no new launch, which would mean the product has organic word of mouth beyond the brand. (2) Xiaomi-Lens-0 and Xiaomi-GUI under SeerRay-Lab gain traction without repo transfers or official announcements. (3) An individual account publishes a similar small OCR model with no big-company backing and gains several hundred stars in a week, which would show individuals can win in this category.

## Why xiaomi-research/Xiaomi-OCR-0 took off

> Channel: GitHub · Research date 2026-11-06 · Data card stars 936 (7 days +817, first 7 days +10)

### Bottom line

This is a 0.8B document parsing / OCR model from the visual understanding group (SeerRay-Lab) in Xiaomi's large-model division. It was quietly released in late September and sat under SeerRay-Lab for a month with only about 100 stars. **On 10-30 the repo moved from SeerRay-Lab to xiaomi-research, and the same day Xiaomi officially announced it as open source** . Chinese tech media, Chinese-language X accounts, and overseas YouTube and news sites then covered it in a cluster, and the stars took off. The model, paper and scores didn't change. What changed was the Xiaomi brand plus one official launch. So this is **a big-brand name and an official launch** doing the work, not organic word of mouth for the product. Against its peers, its star count isn't outstanding.

### 1. Timeline (where the growth came from)

| Date | Event | star (this repo's GitHub repo_snap) |
|---|---|---|
| 2026-09-27/28 | arXiv 2609.36136 tech report and HF paper page went up; GitHub repo created at **SeerRay-Lab/Xiaomi-OCR-0** , HF Space 9-28 built | — |
| 09-29/30 | HF weights went up (createdAt 2026-09-29), README News reads "2026-09-30 tech report and weights released" | — |
| 10-05 ~ 10-25 | community format conversions on their own: ByronLeeee NInfer (10-05), prithivMLmods GGUF (10-07), richardyoung GGUF (10-15), MLX (10-25) | 10-09 72 → 10-30 119, single-digit daily gains |
| **10-30** | **Xiaomi officially announced the open-sourcing** (Baidu Baike citing IT Home: "2026 Oct 30… Xiaomi officially announced the open-sourcing"). The repo moved to the xiaomi-research org (github.com/SeerRay-Lab/Xiaomi-OCR-0 now 301 redirects to xiaomi-research, and HF's SeerRay-Lab/Xiaomi-OCR-0 also 307 redirects there). | 119 |
| 10-31 | NetEase (00:09 posted) "Small-size all-rounder! Xiaomi announces open source 0.8B OCR model"; Phoenix, Sohu, cnyes (Dongcha Beating flash news); X: @0xLogicrw long Chinese post (02:06 UTC); @thePandaily English post (05:37 UTC) | 214(+95) |
| 11-01 ~ 11-03 | overseas re-spread: at least 5 YouTube videos ("Xiaomi-OCR-0 is HERE!", "The 0.8B AI That Destroys Qwen 3.5 on CPU!", etc.), an Instagram reel, Italian news site pasqualepillitteri.it, r/aicuriosity; another batch of quantized versions (argus-ai 10-31, holooo 11-01, MLX 4bit 11-02, Sakura GGUF 11-02, litert-community 11-02) | 371 / 547 / **761 (single-day peak +214)** |
| 11-03 ~ 11-06 | HackerNoon explainer (about 11-03); growth slowing | 854 / 904 / 936 |

Key comparison: **same model, same README and scores; under the SeerRay-Lab account it gained only about 50 stars in a month; after the rename and official announcement, it gained 817 in 7 days.** The same team's two other repos under SeerRay-Lab (Xiaomi-Lens-0 with 105 stars, Xiaomi-GUI with 90 stars) still have only a hundred-odd stars, which makes a useful control group.

#### Channel evidence

- Chinese media press releases (confirmed): NetEase 163 (2026-10-31), Phoenix i.ifeng.com/c/8xfTD83Vy2u (headline "#1 under OmniDocBench 1B"), Sohu, cnyes news.cnyes.com/news/id/6642909; Baidu Baike already has an October entry. Their framing (three capabilities, 170M samples, multi-expert consensus, re-render comparison) is almost identical, clearly from the same official press release.

- X (confirmed): @thePandaily (covers Chinese tech for overseas audiences) and @0xLogicrw (Chinese AI news account) both posted on 10-31. Our own x-radar corpus searching "Xiaomi-OCR-0" and "小米 OCR" over the last 45 days returns 0 posts, suggesting the big accounts did not amplify it.

- YouTube / news sites (existence confirmed, view counts not verified): youtube.com/watch?v=JFkAbZqzd3Q, 2AGXYEQDa-E, RLSOl0nNF_I, Mn30SCPPwHg, dlF8Uh6fYtw; hackernoon.com/xiaomi-ocr-0-a-08b-ai-model-for-document-parsing-and-ocr; aiadoptionagency.com; flex.ai has already listed it as a hostable model.

- Hacker News: our HN corpus (≥5 points) has **no** related story. OCR stories that hit HN around the same time: Indra (10-13,39 points), OCRia-1 (10-22), Baidu Unlimited-OCR-2 (10-27).

- GitHub trending: the repo is only 39 days old, below the roughly 60-day threshold for trending, so it hasn't charted. That says nothing either way.

#### Usage (more telling than stars)

- HF official weights xiaomi-research/Xiaomi-OCR-0: 23,683 downloads in the last 30 days, 27,880,301 total likes, trendingScore 214 (HF API, 2026-11-06).

- Community quants: prithivMLmods/Xiaomi-OCR-0-GGUF has 37,986 downloads, more than the official weights; richardyoung GGUF 4,234; searching Xiaomi-OCR-0 on HF returns 12 derivative repos. Most real users appear to run it locally via llama.cpp / Ollama.

### 2. Competitive landscape (2026 9–November, small open-source OCR / document-parsing VLMs are very crowded)

| Product | Publisher | Launched | Scale (GitHub stars / HF downloads, 2026-11-06) | How it differs from Xiaomi-OCR-0 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PaddleOCR / PaddleOCR-VL-1.6 | Baidu PaddlePaddle | PaddleOCR 2020;VL-1.6 2026-05 | 92,314 stars; VL-1.6 HF downloads 95k | Veteran full-stack suite, traditional pipeline plus VLM; Xiaomi-OCR-0's regional mode still borrows its PP-DocLayoutV3 for layout detection |
| MinerU / MinerU2.5-Pro | Shanghai AI Lab opendatalab | 2024-02 | 83,189 stars | Full PDF-to-Markdown toolchain, 1.2B; Xiaomi is a single model with slightly higher scores |
| DeepSeek-OCR / OCR-2 | DeepSeek | 2025-10 / 2026-01 | 24,119 / 3,535 stars; OCR-2 HF downloads 373k | Focuses on visual token compression; models are much larger |
| GLM-OCR | Zhipu | 2026-02 | 7,577 stars; 1.74M HF downloads | 0.9B, same size class, scores a notch lower (OmniDocBench 95.22), but downloads are 70× Xiaomi's |
| SoMarkAI/OXR | SoMark | 2026-10-05 | 3,603 stars, 7 days +1,147 (first 7 days +2,265), single-day peak +1,048 | Same-period launches with more stars and more momentum than Xiaomi's |
| OvisOCR2 / OvisOCR3 | Alibaba ATH-MaaS | 2026-07 / 10-21 | 77k / 51k HF downloads | Also 0.8B; in the table, OvisOCR2 96.58 is nearly identical to Xiaomi |
| MiniCPM-OCR 1.0 | OpenBMB (ModelBest) | 2026-10-27 | 823 stars, 7 days +325; HF downloads 40.7k | 1.3B, with self-assessed correctness (Jev); **its comparison table uses Xiaomi-OCR-0 directly as the rival** |
| LightOnOCR-3(0.8B / 4B) | LightOn | 2026-10-06 | GitHub 68 stars; HF downloads 12k / 21k | European vendor, same 0.8B class |
| Baidu Unlimited-OCR-2 | Baidu | 2026-10-26 | 311k HF downloads | Focused on unlimited-length documents |
| datalab Indra | Datalab | 2026-10-13 | 1,643 stars | 1M parameters, runs on CPU; a completely different positioning |
| TeleOCR | China Telecom (personal account) | 2026-08 | 365 stars | 1.2B, OmniDocBench 96.87, 0.04 points above Xiaomi |
| HunyuanOCR, MonkeyOCRv2, Tencent WeVisDoc, dots.ocr, olmOCR, Chandra | Various | 2024–2026 | 513 ~ 19,814 stars | all in the same lane |

Takeaway: **it's not short on competitors; if anything it launched at the most crowded moment** . In October alone OXR, LightOnOCR-3, Indra, OvisOCR3, MiniCPM-OCR, and Unlimited-OCR-2 all shipped. By GitHub stars, 936 ranks behind OXR among the same-period releases and sits in the same range as MiniCPM-OCR.

### 3. Differentiation

1. **A 0.8B single model covers three jobs** : document parsing into Markdown / LaTeX / HTML tables, KIE output as JSON, and OCR visual Q&A. Most models in its class only do parsing. OCR-VQA averages 83.2, above Qwen3.5-2B's 80.9 (per the README).

2. **There's a #1 spot to pitch** : it ranks first on Real5-OmniDocBench 95.24 (still a two-stage result using an external layout detector), and is second on OmniDocBench v1.6, behind TeleOCR. Media headlines read "#1 under 1B" and "small-size all-rounder."

3. **Agent-friendly distribution** : the README's first install path is "send the SKILL.md link to your agent," letting the agent set up the environment, download weights, and register the MCP. It also ships an MCP server, a browser demo, and an Ollama path. Few peers package it this way, and it lands right as the agent-tooling trend peaks in 2026.

4. **Xiaomi's brand and real-world backing** : Baidu Baike says the tech is used for screen recognition on Xiaomi phones and "Super Xiao Ai" (pickup codes, parcel codes, bill logging, etc.).

**Are these differences why it took off?** Only partly. The decisive factors are item 4 (the brand) and the official launch: technically, items 1–3 were all in place by late September, when it gained only about 50 stars in a month. Item 2, "#1 in its class," gave media ready-made headlines, and item 3 lowered the bar for community adoption (roughly 6 derivative quants appeared within a week).

### 4. Visibility and copycats

- Visibility: widely covered (Chinese portal press releases, a Baidu Baike entry, Pandaily, HackerNoon, multiple YouTube videos), but it stays at the "news repost" level. Nothing on HN, and no big-account discussion in our X corpus. An open-source model has no direct revenue.

- Follow-on / derivatives: the community produced at least 12 derivative weights (GGUF, MLX, LiteRT, NInfer, and a Vietnamese fine-tune nhtera/Xiaomi-OCR-0-vi); Ollama has packages from longwayxu and richardyoung; MiniCPM-OCR uses it as a comparison target; flex.ai offers it hosted. I haven't seen a similar product copying its form yet.

### 5. Takeaways

- **Quiet launch first, then a big-brand announcement for a second wave** : the paper and weights went up on a sub-team account first, gathering community quants and early feedback; a month later the repo moved to the main corporate account, with a press release to drive a single big spike. The repo transfer used GitHub / HF's transfer feature, so old links auto-redirect, and the early stars and derivative links were kept.

- **Pick a sub-leaderboard you can top** (Real5) for the headline, and pair it with a parameter-efficiency chart (performance vs. parameter count scatter).

- **"Send this line to your agent" install** , plus MCP and Skill support, to lower the barrier to trying it.

- Actively thank and link community quants in the README's News section to encourage redistribution.

### 6. Still unclear

- Which channel the 10-30 official announcement came through (Xiaomi Tech WeChat account, Weibo, whether Lei Jun reposted it) is unconfirmed; I found no original post. I didn't read the original IT Home article, only Baidu Baike's paraphrase.

- YouTube video view counts and Reddit post engagement are unverified (Reddit returned 403).

- The exact repo transfer date is inferred from redirects and media timing; the GitHub API was rate-limited, so I didn't get the transfer event.

- The single-day peak fell on 11-03 (+214), two to three days after the media peak. My guess is it came from YouTube / overseas news coverage, but I have no direct evidence.
