Begging for a star in every auto-update: how the Hongguo short-drama desktop player gained stars fastest among 60 peers

What it is An unofficial desktop player for Hongguo short dramas, for Windows and Mac. After logging in, favorites, playback progress, danmaku and comments sync with the mobile Hongguo app. The repo only ships installers, not source code.

Why it took off Hongguo has never had an official desktop client. Bilibili resource creators kept pushing it as "a GitHub expert built it, free and ad-free" as a topic. Among its peers it has the deepest sync with the mobile app and the fastest fixes when the API breaks, and it asks users to star it in every auto-update, which is why it gained stars fastest.

CHow you could follow Don't build another Hongguo desktop client. Look for another content app with a large daily user base, mobile-only, where the official side still has no web version. Build its desktop client within two or three weeks of the first peer showing up, bring account sync and the social layer along, write the README for ordinary people, and ask for a star in every update.

Grade C: Hongguo already has 60+ repos in this space, and the official web version now plays too, so following it now won't earn stars. What's worth learning is the playbook of "move mobile-exclusive content to the desktop + ask for a star in updates + use resource creators to spread it," but projects that work around official APIs can be blocked at any time or receive legal letters. Hongguo short dramas have over 100M daily actives, yet until late September there was no decent desktop client. In 2026 September, more than 60 "Hongguo desktop" repos popped up on GitHub. yangbin1322/hongguo-player entered two weeks late and isn't the top install count, but it gained 890 stars in the last 7 days, more than double the #2 project (GitHub, 11-06). Its stars aren't from developers. They come from ordinary people who watch the dramas. Below: how it pulled that off, and for anyone wanting a project that earns stars the same way, which parts are worth copying and which to avoid.

Nov 2 afternoon, everyone's playback broke

On Nov 2 2026, at 2:58 Beijing time in the afternoon, an issue appeared in its tracker: "Failed to get the playback address: server returned empty content, please try again later" (#146). Over the next hour and a half the thread filled with "me too," "same here," "still broken after clearing the cache." At 4:30, the author Yangbin replied: "The official API hit risk control. Investigating and fixing. It's not an update problem."

The users' reactions show who this project's users are: "The big shot must be fighting heaven right now. It just recovered for a few minutes!!!" "I'm so anxious I'm crying" "Since it's back, I downloaded it right away, haha" "The Hongguo guys are still working overtime at this hour."

Early the next morning at 4 o'clock, v1.2.20 shipped. The author wrote in the post: "Found the real cause of the Nov 2 playback failures and fixed it." That same night at 7:30, it broke again. In a fresh #164 thread, a dozen-plus "+1" posts came in within fifteen minutes. At 8:18, v1.2.21 went out, taking 44 minutes from broken to fixed. Someone replied below: "The author is unstoppable, already fixed it, so efficient."

Over those three days the stars grew by 109, 162, and 156 per day (GitHub, 11-02 to 11-04), faster than before the breakage. The days playback was broken were exactly the days it gained stars fastest.

What it is

A Hongguo short-drama player for Windows and Mac, written in Wails + Go + Vue3. It's 16MB, works right after unzipping, and the Mac build is a universal package for Intel and Apple Silicon. After you log in with your phone number, favorites, likes, watch history, and reservations sync with the Hongguo mobile app. You can read and post danmaku and comments, which also show up on mobile; share links work across both.

电脑端特有的东西做得很细:竖屏剧会把窗口自动收窄,有置顶小窗、鼠标移开自动暂停(用户叫它「老板键」)、窗口透明度、托盘里只听声音、定时关闭。11-05 的 v1.2.23 一版就加了十几项功能,其中「下载时一起下弹幕和评论」是 11-02 一个用户在 issue 里提的(#143,他的理由是「红果下架的短剧挺多的」),三天后就做出来了。

The repo has no source code. The README says verbatim: "This repository is only for publishing installers and does not contain source code." GitHub is used only to host installers and collect issues. It's free, with an Alipay tip page.

Why now

The demand is there, the official app just doesn't deliver.Hongguo has about 168M daily active users (QuestMobile 2026-07 data, cited by a Tencent App Store blog), averaging around two hours a day per person. On a computer, your only options are a multi-GB Android emulator, or the "Hongguo Free Short Dramas" app from the Microsoft Store, which is really the Android version running on Windows via Tencent App Store. Users on V2EX say it won't go fullscreen. On August V2EX, people are asking whether Hongguo has a Mac client.

The barrier just vanished. Hongguo's API can be reached through "anonymous device registration" to get playback URLs (the v1.2.24 update note for 11-06 literally says "old devices get up to 3 attempts, after which a new device is registered"). In late October someone even packaged the route into an SDK (beilunyang/openhongguo). Anyone who can code can build a shell in a week, which is why there were dozens of them between 9 and October.

One update: the official web version now works. 11-06 Opening hongguoduanju.com gives you a full website: categories, charts, series pages, and a player with 720P resolution, playback speed, comments, and a login entry. In #164 of 11-03, users were already saying "just use the web version." We haven't verified when it launched or whether full episodes are viewable without logging in. But the premise that "the official side has no desktop client" is weakening.

Where users come from

1. Resource-sharing UPs on Bilibili and YouTube. These creators earn by putting Quark cloud-drive links in their descriptions and taking a cut of cloud-drive referrals. They promote whatever software is useful or newsworthy. "Built by a GitHub expert, free, no ads, no emulator" is exactly the angle they want:

The videos clustered between 10-05 and 10-13, and its stars started climbing at 10-12. The features UPs used as selling points are the ones that set it apart from the others.

2. The software asks for stars itself. Starting with v1.1.6 on 10-06, every update note opens with the same paragraph: "The Hongguo short-drama desktop version is completely free, with no ads. If you find it useful, please share it with friends who love short dramas… Give it a Star to support us," and asks users to share it on Douyin, Xiaohongshu, and Bilibili. It shipped 36 versions in 38 days, and auto-update put that paragraph in front of every existing user again and again. Only 4.3% of forks have stars, and most people who star aren't the ones writing code.

3. Chinese tech blogs and download sites. Jishuzhan.net (10-13) ran "Hongguo Short-Drama Desktop: Two Third-Party Clients," calling it "the most feature-rich one." Several download sites also repost the green (portable) version.

4. Let an AI install it for you. On Douyin there's a batch of "#Doubao work: use Doubao to install the Hongguo short-drama desktop" videos (top likes 782; which client they install wasn't verified). On the LingZhan skill site there's a "Hongguo desktop client install and update assistant" that points to this repo and its domestic download site.

5. Hongguo itself trended. 11-02 The Weibo topic #Hongguo short dramas until dawn# hit trending (Yingyongbao blog), and at the same time its daily star gain rose from 109 to 162.

We saw no paid promotion, and no one on X or tech media mentioned it. The star curve rises smoothly with no overnight spike followed by a drop.

Data: GitHub, 11-06. On installs it falls short of Qudong Youshu (the rival's GitHub downloads are about 15 times its own; the author's self-hosted download site and Lanzou volumes aren't visible). What it wins is star growth rate: the same UPs and download sites treat every project alike, and it has the most complete features and the fastest fixes, and it's the only one that asks for a star in every update.

There's also a rival not in the table: Hongguo itself. Yingyongbao published an article "How to install the Hongguo short-drama desktop version," using "hobbyist-packaged desktop builds are unsigned and records are stored locally only" to talk people out of these clients. The official web version can already play.

Where it falls short

Looking at November's issues, the complaints cluster in three categories:

Can break at any time. 11-02 and 11-03 two full-episode failures to play, and users had to wait for the author to adapt to Hongguo's risk controls. Users accept it because fixes are fast. If the author stops updating one day, users leave the next day.
Flagged as malware. #135 "contains a Trojan virus," #172 "flagged as virus," #179 "Windows Security detects a Trojan and deletes it automatically." Unsigned green builds can't avoid this, so the author can only write "why the false positive happens and how to add an exclusion" in the README.
People who want source code can't get it. #138: "I hope you can fully open-source this program… If it's not convenient to open-source for now, I fully respect your decision." Without source, it doesn't spread in developer circles. We didn't see it recommended on V2EX or linux.do.

If it were you

C: you can learn from it, but don't build another "Hongguo desktop version."

60 Multiple repos have already filled this slot, and the official web version can now play. Entering now means taking on the hardest parts (fighting risk controls, malware flags, cease-and-desist risk) without getting the best part (the free exposure from the October UP wave).

Who it fits: Solo developers who want stars and can accept the project being cut off at any time, people who can build desktop apps (Wails, Tauri, or Electron), and those willing to check issues daily and ship a version every day or two.
Who it doesn't fit: People who want an open-source project as a résumé credential and would be uneasy with a repo on their profile that "bypasses the official API"; people who want to build a player shell but won't maintain it long term.
How to do it: Pick a different target. Find a content app with large daily active users, mobile-only, and no official web version yet (novel apps like Fanqie or Hippo-style theater apps; first check whether the official side has a desktop app), and build its desktop or TV version. Don't stop at "search + play": bring over the social layer (account sync, comments, danmaku), then add the things only a PC can do: mini window, always-on-top, boss key, audio-only from the tray. Open-sourcing will earn stars from a group of developers, but don't expect it to drive installs.
How to get users: Write the first screen of the README for ordinary people (how to install, what to do about malware flags, what to do when Mac says "damaged"), with a download site that works in China. Make "free, no ads, open-source on GitHub" a one-liner that Bilibili resource UPs can use directly as a title. Put a fixed "Give it a star" and "Share with friends" line in every auto-update note. Write an installation guide for AI assistants like Doubao.
When the window is: within two to three weeks after the first competitor appears. For this Hongguo wave, the first repo was created on 9-14, UP videos clustered between 10-05 and 10-13; after that window, UPs had each already picked which one to promote.
What would show you read it wrong: ① If Hongguo recently sends cease-and-desist letters or mass-blocks anonymous device registration, and repos in this category stop updating en masse, then "bypass the official API for streams" isn't worth studying at all. ② If the official web version lets people watch full episodes without logging in, or the official PC client launches, and this repo's weekly star gain falls below 200 within two weeks, then its stars came from the official absence, not the experience. ③ Conversely, if the app you pick sees five or more clones within a month of your launch, you've found the right direction, but you'll have to compete on fix speed the way this repo does.

Bottom line

红果短剧日活上亿(QuestMobile 口径,2026-07 约 1.68 亿,转引自应用宝博客),官方却一直没有电脑版。2026 年 9–10 月 GitHub 上冒出一整波「红果第三方客户端」(我们库里能找到 60 多个)。这个库是其中更新最勤、和手机端打通最深的一个:手机号登录后和红果 App 同步收藏、进度、弹幕、评论;16MB 绿色版,Windows 和 Mac 通用;38 天发了 36 个版本。每次自动更新的说明里都会写「GitHub 点个 Star 支持一下」,所以 star 是下载它的普通用户点的,不是开发者点的。流量主要来自 B 站、抖音上靠夸克网盘拉新赚钱的「资源分享」UP 主,另外有中文技术博客转载,最近还多了一条「让 AI 助手(豆包、DeepSeek Harness)帮你装」的新渠道。

1. Basic data

Database created 2026-09-29, today 2,676 stars, 116 forks; last 7 days +890, the prior 7 days +807, single-day peak +199(10-28) (github database).
Curve: 10-09 only 92 stars; from 10-12 onward +50 to 100,10-28 per day, then from 100 onward +200 per day; it kept rising with no one-off spike followed by a drop (repo_day).
Downloads: GitHub Releases total 118,468 across 36 releases, of which the zip for new users was downloaded 88,615 times; the rest are exe files used for auto-update (GitHub API, 2026-11-06). Downloads from the author's own site hongguo.235698.xyz and Lanzou Cloud are not counted, so real installs are higher than this.

2. Competitors: this is a whole wave, not a single product

Hongguo official: mobile app only, no PC client and no web player (hongguoduanju.com shows "Service temporarily unavailable"). A Tencent App Store blog post dated 2026-11 says "Hongguo Short Drama has no official Windows client."
「红果免费短剧」 in the Microsoft Store (xp8jzm5h793blk): in practice it is the Android version running on Windows via the PC AppBao. V2EX users report it 「cannot go fullscreen for video」 (feedbbs.com/v2ex/186310).
Android emulators (MuMu, LDPlayer, AppBao PC): several GB installed, power-hungry, and hot. MuMu and LDPlayer both have dedicated 「Hongguo PC」 landing pages, and LDPlayer also ran a Bilibili ad titled 「上班摸鱼刷 AI 短剧」 (slacking off at work watching AI short dramas).

Takeaway: the 「bring Hongguo to the PC」 slot was taken earlier in September by channels with verified data (install volume leads by an order of magnitude). This repo entered two weeks later; its install volume is not first, but its star growth rate is now first in the whole category, 7 days +890, more than double the second place.

3. Growth tactics (evidence)

Bilibili 「resource sharing」 creators + Quark Drive referrals (confirmed): searching Bilibili for 「红果短剧电脑版」 sorted by plays, the top October videos almost all use the same pitch: 「built by a folk expert / open-source free on GitHub / no emulator needed」, with Quark Drive links in the descriptions.
- 青临同学 posted "Hot Guo Short Drama desktop version is finally here, a community-made open-source app on GitHub, free" 10-05-66k plays; 10-31 then posted "all-platform version" 44k.
- Treasure Research Club 10-07"...supports auto-play, danmaku comments and picture-in-picture"46k. This selling point is the exact line from the project's README.
- YuYu Tech Station 10-09 13k; Resource Hub Community 10-13 4.5k (same-named YouTube video 3.9k); PEM Tech 「支持弹幕+账号同步」 (supports danmaku + account sync) 10-28 4.4k (also a selling point unique to this project).
- Also on YouTube: "Silent as Snow" 10-06 and "GitHub dev builds a no-ads desktop app for Red Fruit short dramas" 2.9k.
- These creators earn a cut from referring people through Quark Drive, so they promote whichever app is good and in the news. 「Free, no install needed, backed by GitHub」 is exactly the material the channel wants.
- Timing matches: 10-05 to 10-13 the videos came out in a cluster, and stars started surging from 10-12.
Asking users to star it in the app (confirmed): v1.1.6(10-06) onward, every release note opens with "Hongguo short-drama desktop is completely free, no ads… give us a Star on GitHub", and also asks users to "share their experience on Douyin / RedNote / Bilibili". It shipped 36 versions in 38 days, and auto-updates kept pushing that message in front of users again and again. Forks/stars are only 4.3%, which also suggests the people starring are ordinary users.
Chinese tech blogs and download sites repost it (confirmed): the tech stack site jishuzhan.net 10-13 names it "the most feature-rich" in its piece "Hongguo short drama desktop: two third-party clients…"; there are also reposts on bk.kxwjj.cn (10-17) and download sites like QQ资源吧 / 梨子乐分享 (v1.2.22 green edition).
Forums (partly confirmed): 2Libra 09-29 posts push the channel-data one, showing demand existed early; on V2EX 08-13 someone asked 「does Hongguo have a Mac client?」. I did not find the author promoting it themselves on V2EX or linux.do (unverified).
The AI-agent install channel (confirmed to exist; its link to this project is partly confirmed):
- From 10-09 to 11-05, Douyin had a batch of "#豆包工作 install Hongguo desktop with Doubao" videos with tens to 782 likes. I haven't verified which client they installed.
- Bilibili 808 疯狂冲浪 10-25 installed it with DeepSeek Harness.
- lingzhanskill.com has a dedicated skill, "Hongguo PC Client Install & Update Assistant," pointing to yangbin1322/hongguo-player and its China download site.

Not found: paid ads, coverage by major X / tech media accounts (x-radar searches over the last 45 days for 「红果电脑版」 and 「hongguo-player」 each returned 0 results), or signs of star-buying (the curve is smooth, suspect is empty).

4. Why it took off

Big demand, and the official side won't build it: Hongguo has over 100M daily active users, about 2 hours per person per day, but officially only has a mobile app. On PC people can only use emulators, screen casting, or run the Android version through AppBao (no fullscreen). V2EX and 2Libra have had people looking for workarounds the whole time.
The barrier was knocked down: Hongguo's API can return playback addresses via 「anonymous device registration」 (this project's v1.2.24 release notes describe the device pool and registration retry; the openhongguo SDK also goes this route). Anyone who can code can build a wrapper in a week, so dozens appeared between 9 and October.
It wins this wave on experience:
- Sign in with a phone number to sync favorites, likes, history, and reservations with the RedNote app (competitor channels have counts up to 1.0.19 for reading cloud lists, but progress is still saved only on this device);
- Danmaku, comments and drama reviews can be posted and are visible on the mobile app too;
- Share links are compatible with the mobile App;
- In portrait mode the window narrows automatically; the mini window stays on top; moving the mouse away pauses playback (the 「boss key」);
- Anime 4K upscaler;
- HEVC and WebView2 get installed automatically with the package, and playback falls back to software decoding if hardware decoding fails;
- 16MB, no install needed; the Mac build is universal for Intel and Apple Silicon.
- These are the details that make it 「actually good on a computer after moving it over from the phone」. The points Bilibili creators use as selling points (「danmaku, comments and mini window」, 「account sync」) are exactly these.
Maintenance speed is the moat: Hongguo changes its API often, and third-party clients can suddenly stop playing. This repo ships 36 releases in 38 days, users can give feedback directly in the software, the author replies, and auto-updates keep it running, so users stay and recommend it.
